Australians on the move are driving population growth in Geelong and the Surf Coast as Melbourne experiences an overseas immigration boom.

Fifty-four per cent of greater Geelong’s net population growth of 6195 people in the last financial year was from “internal migration”, according to latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

Australians accounted for about 63 per

cent of Surf Coast Shire’s growth, the data showed.

New arrivals favoured Melbourne over Geelong because it lacked an existing “critical mass” of immigrants, said prominent Australian demographer Bernard Salt. “(Regional cities) are not popular destinations for international migrants,” he said.

Major cities had the largest concentration of expats whose lingual, religious, family and tribal connections attracted migrants, Mr Salt explained.

Towns like Torquay were Anglo-dominated by “happenstance, not discrimination,” Mr Salt said.

“British-Anglo people speaking to British-Anglo friends in Torquay might think, ‘That’s a nice place to live.’ Torquay is Anglo-dominated now but in 2030s it could be, for example, a hot spot for the Spanish community.”

The Theatre of the Damned founders loved Toxie when they saw him on stage, Mann explained.

So they brought Toxie’s stage show, The Toxic Avenger, to Geelong.

“The play’s an absolute riot and they thought something like this was worth a chance in Geelong,” Mann said.

The plot centres on giant Toxie fighting global warming and wooing a blind librarian with his superhuman strength and massive heart.

“Geelong’s next big theatrical export”, Liam Erck, brought Toxie to life, Mann said.

“He’s absolutely brilliant.”

Shani Clarke, who Mann described as the “most talented comedian in Geelong by a long way,“ played the librarian.

“I can’t take my eyes off her because she does a brilliant job of playing blind and being funny at the same.”

Erck and Clarke perform as several characters each, as does fellow actress Alicia Miller as a villainous mayor of New Jersey and Toxie’s mother in the same scene.

“It’s one of the best bits of theatrical comedy I’ve come across in my many years in the caper,” Mann said.

He saw in the play parallels with the screen adaptation of comic Deadpool.

“It’s part farce and part cartoon musical.

The humour is in your face and it uses massive comic stereotypes.”

The Toxic Avenger opened at Shenton Theatre yesterday and closes this Saturday.

People required a secure job and stability before moving to new estates like Amrstrong Creek, Mr Salt said.

“If you’ve just arrived on the plane from Somalia your employment is less secure.

“You’re not at that stage of your life where you want to take on a mortgage and live in a specific community. Over time those communities become mixed.”

The area of Grovedale, which included Armstrong Creek in the ABS data, grew 7.6 per cent during 2016/2017.

Other major growth areas included Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, which both grew 4.9 per cent, and Torquay, four per cent.

About 51 per cent moving to Geelong came from Melbourne which last year experienced an influx of migrants.

About 80,000 overseas migrants made up 64 per cent of Melbourne’s population boom of 125,000 last year. Immigrants made up about 60 per cent of the total Victorian population increase of 144,357.

The majority of people moving to Geelong came from areas where overseas migrants were settling, including western and inner Melbourne, at 17 and 10 per cent respectively.

“International migrants come in through the main cities first,” Mr Salt said.

But the chief of Geelong multicultural services provider Diversitat said some local ethnic communities were doubling in numbers.

The Indian, Sri Lankan, Filipino, Thai, Chinese and Sikh communities had all experienced growth, Michael Martinez said.

“You’ll see massive increases in these communities.” he said.

Police launch blitz against Lara louts Louts and “low-level” criminals have forced police to launch an operation targeting Lara’s skate park and shopping centre.

Officers from Lara and Geelong were involved in the crackdown, police revealed on social media this week.

Police had been aware “for some time now” of community concern about the behaviour of youths at the skate park and shopping centre, the post said.

“These issues relate to anti-social behaviour and low-level criminal offending in this area and as a result a police operation is now running to address this behaviour,” police said.

“Over recent weeks police have been receiving intelligence reports from the community and collating 000 calls so that patrols and response can be target to the area in peak periods.”

Police said the public would see more

marked and unmarked police vehicles carrying officers “tasked to concentrate on street crime and offences” at Lara.

“There will be a zero tolerance to these offences and associated behaviours,” police warned. “Numerous penalty notices have been issued already for anti-social behaviour.”

The operation would continue “for some time”, police said.

“But we still need the community to continue to make 000 calls with regards to this behaviour when it’s happening.”

Residents expressed support for the operation, citing concerns over various incidents.

“I took my daughter to the skate park and kids’ park yesterday and we dodged broken bottles everywhere,” posted Dean Teesdale under the police announcement.

“They seem to do most of the damage overnight. Hopefully this (the police operation) will

be right around the clock.

“Sick of seeing damage at the kindergarten also.”

Other residents wanted wider involvement than just police.

“The parents of these kids need to take responsibility too,” Guy Bliss posted.

The Lara crackdown follows a police operation targeting similar issues in central Geelong.

Police including mounted officers patrolled the mall area for two weeks in response to ongoing concern about crim and anti-social behaviour.

The blitz extended to two-day operation against people with warrants out for their arrest and fare-evaders.

Police issued arrested five people on warrants and issued 40 infringement notices after checking 700 people for correct tickets as part of the operation.

Hague appeal Lawyers are yet to confirm whether they will appeal Karl Michael Hague's conviction for the stabbing murder of 16-year-old Ricky Balcombe in Geelong's mall 23 years ago.

A Victorian Supreme Court jury found Hague guilty this week after prosecutors accused him of killing Balcombe as payback for damaging Hague’s car during a gang fight.

Waste ‘crisis’ Geelong ratepayers have paid State Government almost $35 million for a waste levy without seeing any of the money spent on alleviating Victoria’s recycling industry crisis, according to City Hall.

Council this week called on the government to “better support” the industry as it dealt with a building backlog of waste after China placed restrictions on imports of recycling materials.

Energy rising Geelong manufacturers struggling with rising energy prices face more pain as new figures show further increases of 13 per cent.

Australian Bureau of Statistics confirmed the increases across electricity, gas and other fuels after Geelong Manufacturing Council revealed to the Indy earlier this month that members were sweating on price relief under the Turnbull Government’s National Energy Guarantee.

Council building Geelong’s council has agreed “in principle” to consolidate its offices in a new Mercer Street building previously estimated to cost around $100 million.

The proposed building, opposite Geelong Police Station, would “unify the organisation, increase efficiencies and productivity, and release surplus assets for other economic uses”, Mayor Bruce Harwood said.

Obese ‘thief’ Police are hunting an “obese woman” who bought soft drinks during a spending spree with a stolen credit card at Grovedale.

The woman used the card twice at a Heyers Road supermarket before using it again the same day at a shop on Burdoo Drive, police alleged.

Chamber loss An “abnormal item” related to non-financial memberships has contributed to Geelong Chamber of Commerce posting a $205,000 loss, according to outgoing president Kylie Warne.

The chamber tried to “engage” the exiting members but eventually wrote-off the monies previously thought owed for memberships, Ms Warne told her final annual general meeting as board leader.

Rebel group fights 'dysfunctional' council Residents fed up with the “dysfunctional” Surf Coast Shire have set up a rebel ratepayer group to challenge their council.

“Were certainly don’t trust and respect the Surf Coast Shire anymore,” said member Maurice Cole.

“We’re having to create our political party just to be heard.”

Line in the Sand so far had about 25 ratepayers who believed that mismanagement of

development was ruining Torquay and the Surf Coast, Mr Cole said.

“New residents are really starting to worry about what they’ve been sold into.”

Mr Cole described the council as much more dysfunctional and financially irresponsible than the Geelong councillors State Government sacked in 2016.

Resident's concerns include reports that Surf Coast Mayor David Bell needs a chaper-

one to meet particular councillors, and expenses rising more than seven times the rate of revenue in council's last budget.

A long-running internal dispute over flying of a rainbow flag also dismayed residents, Mr Cole said.

Fellow Line in the Sand member Rod Foord agreed the council was dysfunctional but described it is a “pawn” of State Government and local municipal alliance G21.

State Government must “urgently” fund Great Ocean Road tourism infrastructure while rejecting suggestions of tolls, according to a federal MP. The government must include funding in the budget because councils had struggled with the road’s infrastructure costs “for too long”, said Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson.

Local MRI rebate holdout

By Luke Voogt A Corangamite resident who paid more than $500 for an emergency MRI scan has accused the Federal Government of delaying Medicare rebates until election time.

Hugo Armstrong was shocked to discover last month the only MRI machine servicing inpatients in the marginal seat of Corangamite was not covered under Medicare.

“We’re in a brand new hospital. How can this MRI not be registered?” he asked.

Mr Armstrong saw a GP Belmont after experiencing severe pain and went to Epworth Hospital because of his private health insurance.

Several hours later he was on an operating table for surgery requiring an MRI scan, which neither his health insurance nor Medicare covered.

Mr Armstrong said he could afford the cost but worried others in Corangamite, from as far as Apollo Bay, could be in for a nasty surprise.

“Many people may have chosen to put every cent they have into private health insurance,” he said.

“You go into a private hospital and still get hit with a massive out of pocket cost. No one knows about this until they’ve been in for an MRI, and everyone’s struggling to pay their health insurance and deciding whether to keep it or not.”

A letter from Epworth Hospital explaining the cost stated that Federal Government had yet to extend the rebate to the machine.

“I’d hate to be that cynical one but I think it’s going to be an election issue,” Mr Armstrong said.

“The publicity and the vote-wining comes first over people’s health, that’s absolutely what’s happening here.”

Hospital technicians and staff told Mr Armstrong “you have to wait for an election for anything like this,” he said.

“It wasn’t like one person whispered it in my ear - they were all saying it.”

A MRI scanner at Geelong hospital is on the Medicare Benefits Schedule but Mr Armstrong said emergency or other circumstances could prevent people from using the machine.

“Sometimes the public health system is under pressure,” he said.

Mr Armstrong contacted Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson’s office but received no update on Epworth’s MRI bid, he said.

“She’s going to wait for an election to cut some red tape and register it with Medicare.”

The Indy contacted Ms Henderson’s office for comment but received no response before going to press.

Premier Daniel Andrews will waste $50 million on a pre-election “stunt” to fool voters into thinking he can deliver fast trains for Geelong, according to the opposition.

The money for a fast-rail “study” would only line the pockets of consultants without delivering service improvements, said public transport shadow minister David Davis.

Scoffing at this week’s funding announcement, he questioned how the Andrews Government could now promise a dramatic improvement in Geelong rail services after delivering only declines over the past three years.

“Daniel Andrews will be long retired by the time anything happens on this project,” Mr Andrews said.

“Victorians should not be fooled by Daniel Andrews’ trickery - he won’t give them anything for decades.

“The reliability and punctuality of train services to Geelong have declined over the last three years. How can anyone expect Daniel Andrews to build a faster train service when he can’t even run the current service properly?

“It’s doubtful Daniel Andrews could even run a steam train on time.”

The government announced on Thursday that the funding had “kick-started work for a high-speed rail link between Geelong and Melbourne” with trains reaching speeds up to 300km/h.

The $50 million would pay for “detailed investigations of fast-rail infrastructure upgrades, costs and train requirements”, the government said.

“This vital work will help identify a preferred option and pave the way for full business-case development.”

“A number of options will be investigated including the possible electrification to Geelong along the existing rail corridor as well as new dedicated high-speed rail alignments with new rolling stock,” the government said.

“A fast rail link from Geelong to Melbourne would slash travel times between Victoria’s capital and its second biggest city as well as creating a rail pathway to Melbourne Airport. "

Council Europe trip anger

By Luke Voogt An $18,000 mayoral "jaunt" across Europe will be waste of money unless it produces tangible results, according to Ratepayers Geelong.

Group president Andrew Senia slammed council's vote on Tuesday night to send mayor Bruce Harwood and a council officer on a 16day study tour.

"This has got to stop because it's not the first time it's happened," Mr Senia said.

"The ratepayers are sick and tired of it."

Mr Senia demanded council demonstrate "direct, realistic and measurable" benefits the trip would provide Geelong.

"Before these people go off on these jaunts they've got to show the ratepayers this is money well spent," he said.

"We want to hear what the benefits are and when they will come, and could they have been achieved from home."

Cr Harwood will represent Geelong at a UNESCO Creative Cities Network annual general meeting in Poland from 12 to 15 June.

"It's just another warm-feeling talk," Mr Senia said.

Geelong became a member the network in 2017 under the city's state-appointed administrators as part of their Clever and Creative 30year vision. Attending the meeting is a require-

ment of membership.

The mayor and council staffer will then travel to Turin, Italy, and Dundee, Scotland, to examine the cities' waste-to-energy operations. The pair will then stopover in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to visit the headquarters of Air Asia as the airline prepares its expansion to Avalon Airport.

But no amount of "PR from City Hall" could justify the decision, Mr Senia said.

"Who knows where the next trip will be and how much it will cost," he added.

Mr Senia said Cr Harwood would face scrutiny upon his return after telling the Indy while campaigning for re-election that any council travel associated with the network member-

ship must produce "tangible outcomes".

But Cr Harwood on Tuesday night described the trip as a great opportunity to promote Geelong and build relationships with cities in the network.

Visiting Dundee and Turin would be "invaluable" in learning how the cities transformed their economies from a traditional manufacturing base, he said.

Deputy mayor Peter Murrihy said failing to attend the meeting could be seen as a snub.

"There's no substitute for face-to-face dialogue when it comes to learning about important matters and making meaningful connections," he said.

Jimmy remembers mates as thousands mark Anzac Day

By Luke Voogt Vietnam veteran Jimmy Holze never forgets the mates who loaded the guns of 106 Field Battery beside him as bullets cracked overhead.

“They become your family because you depend on them,” the Corio 82-year-old said on Anzac Day. The artillery gunner fired shells in heat and rain, in support of 7th Battalion infantrymen as they patrolled the Vietnamese jungle.

“They (7th Battalion) loved the guns,” he said.

“The guns saved a lot of lives.

Often Viet Cong infiltrated the forces protecting the battery and fired at the gunners, with one firefight lasting three days.

Mr Holze remembered a grenade rolling into a trench and killing one of his fellow gunners when it exploded.

“You just can’t stop firing the guns because lives depend on it,” he said.

“Everyone’s afraid but with your mates there next to you you’re not going to show it.”

Mr Holze’s dad, Ronald, sustained wounds in Greece during World War II, while his fatherin-law John Benjamin O’Brien was wounded in World War I. The Germans captured Ronald as lay in hospital and he spent the next five years the Stalag 18 prison camp in Austria, then Nazi Germany.

“He’s lucky he was caught - he couldn’t get shot at,” Mr Holze said.

Ronald never talked about the war but it still affected him long after, Mr Holze said.

“He would fly at the drop of a handkerchief.”

Mr Holze also suffered post-traumatic stress disorder as he struggled to return to civilian life.

“I almost destroyed it,” he said.

“It was one of the hardest things I had to do but some doctors helped me through it.”

Mr Holze and his grandson Ben Noonan joined thousands around Geelong at Anzac Ceremonies on Wednesday, remembering those who served and gave their lives.

BLOCKADE: Activists protest experiments on animals at CSIRO's Geelong lab.

Activists hit ‘disease lab’ About 60 animal-liberation activists blockaded the entrance to CSIRO’s East Geelong labratory on Tuesday to protest experiments on animals.

The Australian Animal Health Laboratory conducts animal experiments to research prevention for highly-infectious and dangerous diseases, about 70 per cent of which now originate in animals.

The activists demanded the laboratory end experiments on animals, including alpacas, dogs and bats, as they blockaded the entrance for three hours.

The laboratory had a role in protecting “the interests of multi-billion dollar animal-harming industries,” protester Joanne Lee said.

Instead of researching ways to treat diseases in animals through experiments, Ms Lee called for an end to industries that breed animals to “exploit and kill”.

The activists believed this would greatly reduce the risk of infectious diseases spreading.

“Animals are here with us, not for us,“ Ms Lee said.

“Their lives are their right, and what is happening to them is unjust, needless violence.“ But the CSRIO issued a statement on Tuesday morning saying the lab was vital to Australia’s biosecurity and that animal experimentation was a very small part of its work.

The lab replaced animal experimentation with other methods where possible and used the minimum number of animals required for a scientifically valid result, a spokesperson said.

The lab ensured the best quality of life possible for animals involved in research, the spokesperson said.

“We undertake to ensure that all animals involved in scientific activities are treated humanely and ethically.”

The lab had a responsibility to manage emerging infectious diseases, the spokesperson said.

Yes, screen-addicts will be thrilled to know that councillors this week agreed to spend around $80,000 on streaming their meetings online.

And that’s just the cost of the equipment, let alone the green room and makeup! And don’t even start on the expense of a Logies nomination!

But hang the expense. Anyone who’s attended a council meeting knows this will be must-watch programming.

Budgets, road discontinuations, communications policies, the blackout on in-camera business - yes, please!

And since council meetings begin at 7pm, the giants of Australian prime-time will be scrambling to counter the launch of Channel COGG if the steaming goes live.

So they should. After all, think of the cast: in the lead role is former detective Bruce Harwood as mayor, with support from stars including ex-BHP Billiton executive Stephanie Asher and static-cycling world record-holder Eddie Kontelj.

How will they deliver their 30-year vision? Who’s ready to step up for the Geelong Region Employment Precinct? What about the rates cap?

Seriously though, the councillors had at least some justification for investing public money in potentially the least-watched show since Yasmin’s Getting Married.

Streaming would offer “greater accessibility” to residents and ratepayers unable to attend meetings in person, City Hall explained, adding that the cameras would also go some way to improving the transparency of council’s decision-making processes.

Still, the councillors seemed perhaps understandably reluctant to take all the credit for the streaming initiative.

“The idea was recommended to us by the Citizen’s Jury,” pointed out Cr Harwood, referring to the group of citizens appointed by previous council administrators to help devise City Hall’s 30year vision.

At least we’ll know who to blame if Channel COGG unexpectedly flops in the ratings!

Animal activists might have got off the wrong flight when they turned up to protest outside Geelong’s CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory this week.

While the lab works on beating the world’s deadliest animal diseases, which for obvious reasons requires some testing on animals, the 60 or so protesters missed possibly a bigger issue interstate.

Smoking mice. That’s right, smoking mice.

In fact, not just smoking mice, but mice forced to smoke.

Yes, around 1000km away researchers at the University of Newcastle have allegedly been putting rodents on the gaspers to discover the impact of ciggie smoke on fertility and Crohn’s disease Humane Research Australia was outraged about Mickey getting on the Whinny Reds, slamming the studies as “inhumane”.

Fine, but hopefully Humane Research Australia eventually gets off the mice and stands up for the smoked-out commuters at central Geelong's bus stops. geelongindy.com.au

LETTERS Ban smokes to fix mall Smoking is banned in Sydney's Pitt Street Mall, so why not Geelong's Lt Malop Street Mall?

At the moment non-smokers are excluded from sitting in or walking through Lt Malop Street Mall by the cloud of cigarette smoke that often fills it.

As well as polluting the air and affecting other people’s health, the smokers are creating a disgusting litter problem by throwing their cigarette butts on the ground.

The worst cigarette butt littering occurs near the southeast entrance to Market Square Shopping Centre, near the toilets, where smoking shopping centre staff stand to smoke during their breaks. Instead of taking their butts back inside they just throw them on the ground.

Both the smoke and the unsightly butt litter discourage, if not prevent, non-smokers from accessing shops that front onto the mall, which in turn deprives the shops of sales income.

I felt quite ill after walking through the mall last Friday, so I won't go back.

Why should smokers have the mall to themselves? At the moment it's not really a public space, just a smoker’s paradise.

Making Lt Malop Street Mall smoke-free would ensure it was enjoyed by all, remove a major source of litter, and save ratepayers the money presently spent on contracting a firm to pick up the butts.

Pollies go to water We are surrounded by a gaggle of whimpy politicians.

Federal pollies won't tackle the water issues in the Otway Ranges, using the excuse that it is a state issue.

The Greens have known about the deplorable state of affairs for over eight years but haven't done a thing. Cannabis use must be debated and is an issue worth resolving but I thought the Greens’ core business involved looking after the environment.

The state opposition Liberal-National party sees the devastation of wetlands, creeks drying up and peat swamps catching fire as a local issue not worth the few votes they might lose by ignoring it. It appears that Liberal-National party ministers have to toe the party line regardless.

Labor’s Water Minister cannot even find time to meet, even when toxic acid water and heavy metals flow down the Barwon River out into Bass Strait through the middle of her electorate.

Perhaps we need independents who are uncompromised by party policy, someone prepared to fight and attempt to right an unforgivable wrong no matter how many votes are involved. We may all be surprised how many votes are in fact involved.

Are any politicians prepared to stand and fight water issues of the Otways, to take a risk and stand up for what is the right?

China, India, Indonesia, Turkey, Japan, Vietnam, Russia and others are building hundreds of these plants but not saintly Australia because we must save the planet.

At a recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), commonwealth leaders called for greater cooperation in trade and security amongst members.

They said this would enhance the progress of all members through increased fellowship with like-minded nations.

The reason for this common understanding is found in the heritage we share and the benefits of British law based on our belief in law and freedom as founded on Biblical truths.

The next obvious advantage would be alignment with the USA, another nation founded on a Christian foundation.

Early in his Presidency Donald Trump stated his desire for such like-minded cooperation.

Such a grouping is predicted in Bible prophecy and seems an obvious choice in a world where many nations are now aligning into different factions.

Get Over It, East Geelong The Commonwealth Bank admitted to tens of thousands of counts of money laundering and of charging a client fees for 10 years after the client’s death. The stories are legion and have affected hundreds and thousands of people.

One story that particularly grated was the bank-forced demise of Cairns businessman Roy Lavis’s hugely-successful earthmoving business, which employed 700 people, all of whom lost their jobs.

But in all of this massive exposure of Bank misdeeds is the failure to call it what it is: fraud. Sheer, abject, undeniable fraud.

And that means the AMP executive who simply quit and walked away should perhaps instead have been led away in handcuffs to the divvy van, as should any number of bank executives and employees who knowingly perpetrated these frauds on a massive and ongoing scale.

Saints must first die In last week’s Indy Brian Kuster wrote that the proposed South Australian $800 million solar/ battery “virtual power plant”, which would deliver an average 37MW of electricity, was somehow price competitive with a 210MW gas plant being built for $295 million.

Mr Kuster correctly estimated that the gas plant fuel and maintenance would be about $4 billion for 25 years but didn’t estimate the solar facility costs.

So let’s do it.

If we scale the average output of 37MW up to the 210MW gas plant output, the solar facility would require 280,000 rooftop 5kW solar systems coupled with 280,000 Tesla Powerwall batteries. The cost would be $4.5 billion.

Then add battery and inverter replacements of about $3.3 billion and $1 billion for maintenance and operational cost.

So, the total 25-year costs of the solar facility would be around $8.8 billion compared to $4 billion for the gas plant.

Derek Lipka's helpful rundown on the economies of electric cars (Letters, 20 April) might be of interest to the avant-garde, like Mr Lipka, but not to “dinosaurs”, like me, who have always found the internal combustion engine the perfect means of transportation.

Nor does he attempt to meet the challenge posed by the carbon-killers: those environmentalists who insist on decarbonising society and who would not wish their e-cars befouled by fossil-fuel-generated electricity.

As Mr Lipka should know by now, so-called renewables are incapable of electrifying modern society. They are more than successful, however, in destroying the industrial capacity our society once possessed as the use of reliable fossil fuels is sabotaged.

But why? To save the planet from carbon dioxide emissions, according to a political hypothesis without scientific basis.

If Mr Lipka ever gets around to debating that issue he may be worth reading.

Nuclear solution coming Leaving aside Derek Lipka’s denigration of Alan Barron and other “dinosaurs”, I must comment on the presently popular enthusiasm for electric cars Aside from major problems in the future with the disposal of their toxic batteries, electric cars have a problem of range. They are wonderful for driving around town but not from Geelong to Kalgoorlie.

Now, behold! A different nuclear technology due to roll off a production line this year will provide not only cheap, clean, walk-away safe electricity but will also make it possible to create higher-energy and cleaner petroleum from carbonic acid extracted from seawater combined with CO2 from the atmosphere.

Fantasy? No, it’s been done already.

The technology only awaits the cheap electricity that nuclear can provide.

This is a complete game changer. Not only has the fuel a higher energy content but it is also quite pure, without any of the nasties in our present fuels.

Other side benefits include continual chemical harvesting of valuable isotopes as they are created, including Bismuth 213, which kills cancers such as leukaemia far more effectively than anything presently available.

Then there is the option of continuous desalination of seawater to provide an endless supply of fresh water to be pumped inland virtually free.

Try doing these things with so-called renewables.

Pop legends back on tour

By Luke Voogt Australia is “very much like home” for pop legend Dolores ’Dee Dee’ Kenniebrew, an original member of '60s supergroup The Crystals.

“The country’s so open and vast and we have a lot of similarities,” she told the Indy on Monday.

Brisbane reminded her of Florida, while Melbourne was like New York, Kenniebrew said.

“There’s one part of Melbourne I call 42nd Street because it reminds me so much of Manhattan.”

Kenniebrew first toured Australia 1964 with the original Crystals, returned with the Commodores in the '80s and was last here in 2015.

She started performing straight out of high school in 1961 and has toured ever since apart from two years off after the birth of her daughter.

Kenniebrew still hits the stage with the same vigour but takes longer to adjust to new time zones, she said.

“When you’re young it would probably take a day or so to recover,” the 73-year-old said.

She spoke to other Indy shortly after hopping out of bed about 11am following a show in Newcastle the night before.

“I’m beginning to drag - we’ve been running around quite a bit.

“Finally, for the first time today, I’m catching up on my sleep.”

The Crystals performed in a time of social rev-

olution when issues like civil rights were forefront.

“We were too busy working on the road to get involved in all that,” Kenniebrew said.

But she remembered performing for a segregated audience at a town in Georgia.

“One side was for the whites and one side was for the blacks. It was just the most ridiculous thing I’d ever seen.”

But often their music united crowds, Kenniebrew said.

“It’s what will unite us to other galaxies.

“Thank god every audience has been great.

People get out there to have a good time and they do.”

Kenniebrew is the one remaining original member in The Crystals latest line-up touring Australia.

“One by one the originals dropped off,” she said.

“When you’ve got mums and they’ve babies at home they’ve got to be there.”

But Kenniebrew was able to stay on the road thanks to her nanny.

Kenniebrew's daughter was now a professor at George Washington University and spoke five languages, she said.

The Crystals will perform its greatest hits like He’s a Rebel, Da Doo Ron Ron and Then He Kissed Me when they come to Geelong Performing Arts Centre next Thursday.

“Who doesn’t want to feel like they’re 15 or 16 again,” Kenniebrew said.

“I wish I had come here sooner,” he said.

“If I had come earlier I probably would have stayed.”

Johnny Diesel and The Injectors had just $95 between them when they stepped off the bus in Perth after crossing the Nullarbor 30 years ago.

The hobby group, made up of the remnants of an imploded previous band, played nine shows a week for several months just to get by.

Three decades later Mark Lizotte, better known as Diesel, has hit the road again with his latest Australia-wide tour 30 Year Thang.

Diesel will stop at the Gateway Hotel next Friday, a year after his last visit to the venue.

“If I’m not in the studio, there’s a good chance I’m out touring,” he told the Indy last year.

The show will span Diesel’s career, in which he has won six Aria Awards since that fateful day in 1988.

During that year the band scored a fortuitous slot with Diesel’s brother-in-law Jimmy Barnes on his Freight Train Heart tour, which helped propel them to greater heights.

“Jimmy’s such a passionate and forceful singer,” Diesel said.

“That was kind of like boot camp for me, and it really forged me.“ His musical journey began learning the cello as a child in Arizona and receiving an electric guitar from his sister at age 14.

Fresh Eyre’s set to arrive

By Luke Voogt Christine Davey brings Jane Eyre to life with two chairs in her “minimalist” and “fastpaced” onstage adaptation of the classic novel.

“Theatre should be about the performance, not about fancy hats or sets,” the show’s director told the Indy this week.

“Sometimes people leave a play thinking, ‘What an amazing set!’ But when you ask them about the performance they don’t remember anything.

“You should be able to do it in jeans and a T-shirt if the performance is good enough.“ “Having said that, our costumes are amazing,” Davey added with a laugh, lauding local designer Emma Watson for creating the play’s outfits.

Davey has worked in theatre for 47 years after starting as an actress at age 10, and is studying a PhD of screenwriting at RMIT. She began her Geelong-based theatre company Skin Of Our Teeth Productions to work with creative people and mentor young actors and actresses.

“It’s amazing to be able to give people like that an opportunity,” she said.

Charlotte Bronte was “ridiculously” ahead of her time when she created heroine Jane Eyre, who overcame her abusive childhood and poverty through education and a lucky inheritance.

Geelong kids enjoy a party at the YMCA.

Fun at YMCA Geelong YCMA is the perfect place for active kids to party, says the group’s Marija Privitelli.

The YMCA runs gymnastics and multi-sport parties at its Newtown, North Geelong and Bannockburn centres with options including basketball, football, soccer and cricket.

“We can fully cater the party to the child’s needs or interests,” Marija says.

“We can even focus on just the one sport if that is what the child prefers.

“They get to use equipment such as trampolines, the foam pit and beams, and have all sorts of fun.”

The parties include one hour of play with the YMCA’s qualified instructors and 30 minutes for food, cake and relaxing. Parents can use all of the YMCA’s kitchen facilities and the centres provide cordial, tea and coffee.

The YMCA is even open to parents taking their kid’s birthday celebration to the next level.

“We had one parent who had someone come in and do face painting for the kids,” Marija says.

“We are happy for parents to get creative and we are happy to help make the party as personalised as possible.“ To find out what is possible just phone the YMCA on 5223 2714, she added.

The YMCA also offers sports for children of all ages throughout the year including judo, and trampolining.

“We just want to let the community know that we have something for everyone,” Marija says. “ “It doesn’t matter whether you’re into ball sports or hand stands, it’s the perfect place to get active and healthy.“

Scanner to ease pressure Geelong’s second positron emission tomography (PET) scanner will open to the public this month, to the delight of Lake Imaging nuclear medicine physician Raef Boktor.

“We want to make it easier for more of Geelong to get the benefits of this very important imaging modality,” Dr Boktor says.

“The idea behind this is Lake Imaging is trying to bring the best technology to the local community.”

The PET scanner is vital for detecting cancers and can pick up information that other

modalities can not, Dr Boktor explains.

“Many tumours can be imaged by the PET scanners. It’s a very important added-on facility for our community.”

Previously Geelong hospital had the only PET scanner in Geelong, he says.

“This new scanner will relieve pressure on the public system and prevent the need for patients to travel to Melbourne to get this kind of imagery done.”

Dr Boktor has worked in nuclear medicine for more than 15 years, and manages the Lake Im-

aging’s nuclear medicine and PET Victoria-wide.

For him the job is all about identifying cancers quickly, so patients get the best treatment as soon as possible.

“It’s very rewarding when you diagnose the problem and hence how to solve it,” he says.

A PET scan uses nuclear tracers to create a 3D image, which detects cancers and tracks their spread throughout the body, by assessing metabolic activity.

Founded in 2002, Lake Imaging is part of Integral Diagnostics, the fourth largest radiology pro-

vider in Australia. Its team of expert radiologists and highly qualified technical, nursing and support staff are committed to providing the highest level of diagnostic imaging and patient care.

“Our vision is to provide an expert and compassionate radiology service for our patients,” Dr Boktor says.

The scanner, located at St John of God Hospital, will open to the public on 23 April.

Lake Imaging is also the preferred provider of Magnetic Resonance Imaging for the Geelong Football Club.

Mazda gives MX-5 tweak

Ever restless in their search for perfection, the engineers at Mazda have given their ND series MX-5 roadster’s rear suspension some minor tweaks.

Using information from the development of the Retractable Fastback (RF) version of the MX-5, the soft-top’s rear suspension’s upper link bushings have been lowered and the rear bump stops lengthened. The aim of the latter was to bring the stops into play a little earlier.

It’s also there to give a slightly more comfortable ride, but obviously without in any way interfering with the MX-5’s exceptional road holding and feel.

Arguably the biggest news is that Mazda’s stunning colour, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, is now available on the MX-5.

Realising that - sadly - the MX-5 roadster is more likely to spend time in boring commuting than being fanged on interesting Sunday drives, in-cabin noise reduction has been improved. Sound insulation was installed over areas of the centre tunnel and gaps around the tunnel reinforcements were reduced. Finally vibration-damping materials were added to

Selwood win boost as Cats eye Swans

By Justin Flynn Geelong’s chances of defeating Sydney received a massive boost this week when skipper Joel Selwood beat a striking charge at the AFL tribunal.

Selwood had received a one-match ban for striking Port Adelaide’s Lyndsay Thomas but successfully appealed the result.

“I’m pleased to obviously get to plead my case tonight and have the opportunity to do it,“ Selwood said after the hour-long hearing.

“I’m really looking forward to taking on Sydney this weekend.“ And while the news was good coming out of the Cats’ camp this week, the same cannot be said for the Swans.

Sydney will be without superstar forward Lance Franklin with a bruised heel and midfielder Dan Hannebery with a groin complaint.

Franklin’s injury comes at a poor time for the Swans.

The gun forward was in superb form, but the Swans are not taking any risks with him.

Mark Blicavs’ match-up with Franklin would have been a genuine highlight of the game.

Blicavs has reinvented himself as a key defender this season and has taken on, and beaten, Port Adelaide’s Charlie Dixon, Gold Coast’s Tom Lynch and Melbourne’s Jesse Hogan.

With Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson out injured, Blicavs has taken on the key defender’s role.

“He’s strutting around like he’s better than Matthew Scarlett at the moment so he’s really happy with his game,“ Patrick Dangerfield joked on Monday.

Calm allows offshore fun ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers were greeted with mostly calm conditions over the past week, allowing offshore fishing.

The 30m mark out from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads was loaded with gummy shark to 15kg. Fresh Australian salmon baits fished on flasher rigs worked best.

Plenty of surface commotion was going on too as salmon erupted in surfacefeeding frenzies, along with the odd school of bluefin tuna.

Trelly’s Geelong’s Peri Stravropoulos got stuck into any number of pinkie snapper to 50cm out from Barwon Heads last week, along with a blue devil fish that he released.

The beaches from Point Lonsdale to Bancoora also produced salmon. Bluebait fished on paternoster rigs caught fish, along with metal lures cats out on the run-in tides.

The beaches also fished well for gummies after dark, especially for anglers using fresh fish fillets.

Corio Bay’s inner-harbour hosted a wide variety of species including squid, whiting, salmon, pinkies, flathead and even the odd elephant fish.

Soft plastic anglers snagged pinkies, flathead and salmon around the moored yachts along Western Beach. Gulp turtleback worms and 3” minnows fished on 1/8oz jig heads did the trick nicely.

Limeburner’s Point boat ramp was a land-based hot spot for garfish, which were present in excellent numbers and responded well to silverfish under lightly weighted floats.

Clifton Springs was squid central. Size three jigs allowed to sink almost to the bottom resulted in bag-limit captures.

Nearby, whiting held over the Curlewis Bank in 6m of water. Snapper made an appearance too, with anglers finding the odd larger fish along the Point Richards Channel.

Queenscliff was an excellent landbased option for squid. Bell Reef, the Queenscliff Pier and the harbour were all productive on either baited or artificial jigs.

Whiting were difficult to find off Queenscliff, with only small numbers of fish reported.

Elephant fish were on the chew in the Barwon River estuary, where squid rigged on a running sinker rig worked well. Plenty of smaller-model salmon kept anglers busy, while bream were taken on Bass yabbies in the upper reaches of the Sheepwash.

On the freshwater scene, Lake Purrumbete gave up the odd large brown trout to almost 10lb along with big numbers of redfin. Trolling Tassie Devils about 10m during the day was ideal, although flat-lining should work well as the weather cools.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir was consistent for redfin to 35cm. Trout just over 1kg was at times taken on Pegron tiger minnows cast from the main rock wall.

Next week’s likely fine weather should provide more chances to fish offshore from Barwon Heads for gummies, while Clifton Springs will be worth the time for its incredible numbers of squid. Freshwater fishos should keep casting at Wurdee Boluc for trout and redfin. geelongindy.com.au
