Never forgotten By Rowan Forster Huge crowds flocked to Pakenham's cenotaph on Anzac Day morning to pay their respects to the fallen. Main Street was brought to a standstill on Wednesday as hundreds braved the cold to show their support for the nation's veterans. After the solemn service, a mixture of children, parents, past soldiers and ancestors queued to lay poppies and wreathes in commemoration. Pakenham RSL president Garry Elliot estimates crowd numbers surpassed 1,500 for the dawn service.

Top praise for Yakkerboo By Rowan Forster Pakenham's highly-anticipated Yakkerboo Festival has been declared a "huge success". Thousands flocked to Bourke Park and Main Street to partake in the 43nd annual event, which has ballooned in popularity since its inception. Yakkerboo committee president Michael Porter said he was extremely satisfied with the outcome and the behaviour of patrons. He has implored the community to get involved due to the committee's declining size. "As the shire grows, the festival has to keep getting bigger and better and with that comes more work," he said. "The biggest problem with that is that the committee keeps getting smaller. "We struggled in manpower this year and we're really looking for new people to spread the workload. "Other than the car par incident, the day was very successful and we trust everyone enjoyed themselves." According to Mr Porter, James Street's underground car park entry was closed when it should have remained open - creating congestion for those trying to leave. However, festival goers have expressed overwhelming praise for the event. "It was a great day out for the kids and one of the biggest turnouts we've seen so far," Pakenham's Sarah White said. "Hopefully it will continue to grow in the years to come." Yakkerboo's Saturday night entertainment was described as the highlight, boasting the biggest turnout of the weekend. "The Saturday night was a huge success," Mr Porter said. "This year we decided to put a band on and have some food trucks and it worked. VC family’s bravery bond The Victoria Cross family is an exclusive club. There are just four surviving Australian recipients of perhaps the world’s highest award for valour. One of them is the charismatic Keith Payne VC, who headed a roll-call of notables at a sellout launch of the book The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers at Bunjil Place on 21 April. The 420-page richly-illustrated volume honours the 100 Australian awardees, the medal and also the men’s families. It involved travelling the world to gravesites and a hyper-secure vault containing the VC’s originating bronze lump. The author Michael Madden of Berwick even gained rare access to the diaries of the medal’s instigator Queen Victoria. For many of the families, the book was the first time their heroes have been described in their own words. These lofty heroes have never seemed more human. “They are put in a situation, they had to make a decision and they act,” Mr Madden told the 800-plus audience at Bunjil’s theatre. “Keith Payne had a long career. In some

ways, he’s just a veteran, just a man like any other. “But what he did (to earn the VC) wasn’t normal.” As a wounded commanding officer, Mr Payne covered for his troops’ withdrawal from a heavy North Vietnamese attack during the Vietnam War in May 1969. For three hours, he searched for injured soldiers while under fire. He found 40 of them and led them to safety through enemy territory. “I was the company commander and it was my responsibility to look after my soldiers,” the 84-year-old told the 800-strong gathering at Bunjil. “I wasn’t going to ask someone else to do a job I wasn’t going to do myself.” Like many veterans, he suffered post-traumatic stress after his military service. But as his spirits started to rise, he made himself a pledge: “If I’m going to live, I’m going to live a happy life.” He added that one enduring problem he had were some marks that scarred his face. “That’s only because the girls don’t kiss me - they bite me.” Mr Payne was joined on stage by Doug

Baird, the father of the late Cameron Baird VC. He was awarded Australia’s most recent VC for his “ultimate self-sacrifice” leading multiple charges under fire as a Commando Team Commander in deep enemy territory in Afghanistan in 2013. Cameron was killed in the endeavour, which repeatedly neutralised enemy threats and helped preserve the lives of his team members. His parents help run a not-for-profit charity Cam’s Cause in his memory. It has raised more than $35,000 for the welfare of Australia’s returned Commandos. “By doing that, it allows us to carry on what we believe Cam would be doing,” Mr Baird said. After the launch, Mr Payne, Mr Baird and Mr Madden shook hands with long lines of admirers as they signed copies of the book. Others took the chance to handle the late Reg Rattey’s Victoria Cross, observing its unique name and date inscriptions on the back. Such medals are estimated to be worth up to $1.5 million. It was all academic to son Rob Rattey; the

medal will be never going up for sale, he told the audience. About 130 members of VC families gathered for the launch - what is believed to be some sort of record. One of them was 97-year-old Daphne Dunne, the widow of Albert Chowne VC, who travelled from Sydney for the event. Another was Faye Axford, of Endeavour Hills, is a great-niece of Thomas ‘Jack’ Axford VC as well as a great-niece by marriage to the highly-decorated Albert Jacka VC. She described the event as one that would go down in history. “It will never be forgotten. We’ll never get something like this again.” Mr Jacka’s great-nephew David Streatfield, of Greensborough, was interviewed for the book. Some inaccurate accounts had been given about his illustrious ancestor’s life. It was a chance to put the record straight on the man, Mr Streatfield said. All of the book’s proceeds will go to the critical service The Totally and Permanently Disabled Soldiers Association of Victoria. Some of their stories defy description and this is why Anzac has become a legend that verges on myth. We present the case of Walter Peeler, VC, BEM. As told in a new book, this extraordinary man won the British Empire’s highest decoration for valour - the Victoria Cross. But prior to that he had been courtmartialled and stripped of his rank after a fellow Anzac was accidentally shot during a lesson on the Lewis gun, a WWI light machine-gun. It was the same type of weapon Peeler - his rank restored - was using a few months later in an attack on Broodseinde Ridge on the Western Front. In that action, firing his machinegun from the hip, he ran across exposed ground, ultimately accounting for over 30 enemy soldiers in all - and winning his VC in the process. But he wasn’t finished there. He lied about his age - downwards and signed up again for WWII. There, he found himself a prisoner of the Japanese on the Burma Railway. Remarkably, the Japanese under their Bushido Code redognised his honour and, rather than treating him harshly, actually treated him better. There’s enough adventure in that lifetime for 10 men. But it’s hard to think of a man who more embodied the Anzac spirit - he was clearly a larrikin as well as a fighter, and a man who understood better than most the fine line between the VC and a courtmartial. Cranbourne's Anzac Pride By Brendan Rees Thousands gathered for an Anzac Day service in Cranbourne to pay tribute to Australia's servicemen and women, more than a century after the Anzac legend was born. Current and former members of Australia's defence forces, along with community groups, marched along High Street from 10.30am. Schoolchildren wearing medals marched alongside veterans and active service men and women to honour the fallen. The parade, which was led by the Cormac McCarthy Irish Pipe Band were cheered by crowds of spectators. Dandenong Cranbourne RSL sub-branch senior-vice president Bill Shepherd welcomed the crowd at a service held at Cranbourne War Memorial at Greg Clydesdale Square where Reverend Ineke Gyles of the Cranbourne Uniting Church led the crowd in prayer. Mr Shepherd said: "We have come here to commemorate one of the most significant events in our national calendar." "We have enjoyed the benefits of the peace and easy existence which was purchased at the cost of many lives. "It is now a long standing tradition that on Anzac Day we all pause to remember those that offered up their life in the defence of their nation and community which is the greatest contribution any human can make," Mr Shepherd said. Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne said "The spirit of Anzac is the spirit of this country." "We see their names chiselled in the walls of war memorials. They've done more than that. They have chiselled the Australian character into the soul of this nation with their service," he said. Eyes then turned to the skies when the Royal Australian Air Force conducted a flyover.

Casey Councillors, members of the Cranbourne Dandenong RSL sub branch, community groups, schools and the public were then invited to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph as a mark of respect to the men and women who served their country. The service continued with The Last Post, a silent tribute and a rendition of the national anthems of Australia and New Zealand before a Catafalque Party from HMAS Cerebus marched off under the command of Petty Officer Bosnuns Mate Gamble.

Peter Burgess was driving his kids to kindergarten with his wife on Bessie Creek Road when a garbage truck lost control and skidded into the wrong side of the road just before 10am on Friday 20 April. Here is how one reader reacted online: Sarah Krol: Can I just say that if it is the same garbage truck driver that empties my bins, SPEED would have been a factor as well. I have never seen a garbage truck slide to a stop before, but ours does this each week because the driver is going ridiculously quick. On the 23 April the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story of two thieves who were caught on camera after taking off with a trailer from a Cranbourne East driveway on Thursday morning 19 April. Remembering war heroes The latest in a long line of fascinating war stories have been dug up by the intrepid investigators of the Narre Warren and District Family History Group. Group members hosted their fourth commemorative cemetery walk at Cranbourne on Sunday 22 April, following similar events at Berwick, Pakenham and Harkaway since the Anzac Centenary celebrations in 2015. Jane Rivett-Carnac said the event was a tremendous success. “The weather was perfect and we had a good time meeting local families, our loyal followers and new visitors all enjoyed the experience,” she said. “We have tried to do our bit in honouring the many local families who waited for sons and daughters to return from the Great War. “We have one more walk at the end of October at Lang Lang Cemetery and we will then have visited five Casey and Cardinia cemeteries and researched and written close to 500 stories.” A book has been produced to coincide with each walk - this one entitled They Answered The Call: a World War I Walk in Cranbourne Cemetery. Among the stories uncovered was that of the Nurse family. Harry and Ellen Nurse had three children serve in the Great War - one signing up at only 13 - and two of those also saw action in World War II as well. Their stories are: Gunner Edward Joseph Nurse Edward was a 37-year-old farmer at Lynwood in Cranbourne when he enlisted on 1 December 1915. Assigned to the reinforcements of the 14th Field Artillery Brigade, Edward trained in Egypt in the middle of 1916 before sailing to England. He seems to have spent the rest of his service in England before returning home in 1918 suffering from sciatica. He married

Annie Daly in 1923 and they lived at Tooradin. Edward was 64 when he died on 9 March 1941 and was buried at Melbourne Cemetery. Captain Edwin Scott Nurse Edwin Scott Nurse was just 13 when he was the first of seven Victorian boys to be accepted into the Royal Australian Navy’s first intake of midshipmen cadets in 1912. During World War I Edwin was serving in the North Sea, he was promoted to acting sub-lieutenant on 1 September 1918. While based in Sydney Edwin married Marion Glenn, they then moved to Queenscliff in 1931 when he was posted to Swan Island. During World War II Edwin was based in London. In 1947 Edwin had been promoted to Captain and in 1953 he received the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Medal. He retired in 1956 he had served continuously for 44 years. Edwin and Marion did not have any children, Edwin died in 1972 at Heidelberg aged seventy-two. Edwin’s elder brother served in the Army. Brigadier Henry Scott Nurse Brigadier Henry Scott Nurse had completed two years and 23 days at the Royal Military College Duntroon when he enlisted on 16 April 1916, as a 19-year-old he was commissioned as a Lieutenant. Henry served with the 20th Battery of the 8th Field Artillery Brigade on the Western Front; he was also seconded to administrative duty in England. In 1918 he was transferred to Egypt as an instructor and administrator. During the demobilisation period Henry was ‘brought to notice of the minister for his Meritorious Service during that time. Henry married Evelyn Neill at Queenscliff in 1920 and they had two sons. Henry served in London during World War II and in 1950 was Brigadier Inspector General of Munitions at Army Headquarters Melbourne. Henry was 84 when he died in 1981 at Camberwell.

School ‘bully’ mob strikes An alleged high-school bullying saga led to an angry mob of adults and students confronting the 14-year-old bully outside his house in Cranbourne, a court heard. The alleged bully turned victim as he, his 17-year-old brother and 19-year-old ‘auntie’ were punched, pushed, felled and kicked by members of the group on an afternoon in late April 2017. The mob included children in school uniform as well as the alleged bullying victim’s 48-year-old father and 56-year-old godfather, both of whom faced court on affray charges. Footage of the violence, screaming, yelling and abuse was filmed on a mobile phone and viewed at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 17 April. On video, after the initial flurry of punches, the father says: “We came here to talk, bro. “I came here to talk because I’m not happy.” The assault continued off-screen, police claimed. The “emotionally high level” father was trying to calm things down, his lawyer told the court. He was frustrated about his son possibly being bullied and assaulted at school four times. The son was treated in a head trauma unit at hospital after one of the attacks, the lawyer said. The father, who owns a trucking business, was taking significant painkillers as he awaited hip surgery. He had a heart condition and high blood pressure. He was not a violent man, apart from a nonconviction for a “minor” recklessly causing injury charge more than 20 years ago, his lawyer said. The godfather pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of riotous behaviour. He didn’t actively take part but kept watch on the nature strip

during the assault, the court heard. The godfather’s lawyer said there was no evidence he knew violence would proceed when he gave two males a lift to the incident. Nor that he knew that his son took a set of knuckle-dusters to the encounter. He was being treated for depression after the death of another son, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen questioned the motives of the mob attending the house. Was it to “bully him back?”, he asked. “There doesn’t seem to be much discussion here. “You’ve got a large group that confront children in their own home and then there’s violence. “It’s not very bright but very stupid ... to take children around there.” He said bullying concerns could have been dealt by the school or police. Instead the situation got out of hand, and could have led to more dangerous consequences. The father was convicted and fined $1000 for affray. The godfather was fined $500 without conviction. A third adult’s hearing was adjourned due to being injured as a victim of a recent home invasion. Several bones were broken and several surgeries had since taken place, the third coaccused’s lawyer told the court. Mr Vandersteen noted that the third adult appeared to be the aggressor. The video showed an exchange of punches with the 14-year-old boy. His case was adjourned to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 May.

Police probe attack with baseball bat

Police are investigating after a man was allegedly struck with a baseball bat on Alberton Drive in Cranbourne West on Monday 23 April. It is believed the victim was approached by a man outside an address and a verbal altercation took place before the victim was struck just after 6pm. Police are currently interviewing one of the men involved. The other man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Sewing seed of diversity By Cam Lucadou-Wells A massive quilt stitching together 30 Casey multicultural groups is a powerful show of the adage 'strength in diversity'. Artist Dena Aljamal, of Keysborough, conceived a mighty image of a sun-lit dancer as the centrepiece to the 4-square-metre craftwork. The dancer is something of a universal language, crossing all of the 30 groups from all over the world, she says. "I wanted something to satisfy everyone. "It's nice that in Australia we have this harmony between each other. "We love the respect in this country, in this safe country." The project was conceived in meetings with the groups 18 months ago, discussing the difficulties faced by migrant women. After moving from Dubai on a professional visa, Aljamal was frustratingly unable to have her pharmacy qualifications recognised in Australia. She sat for exams 10 times unsuccessfully. She set on a new course of interior design - graduating with an award at Holmesglen Institute. Casey is becoming like a "city of art" crowned by the recently-built Bunjil Place arts

centre, she says. "But this project is not just for the City of Casey, it's for Victoria and for Australia." Berwick quilter Claire Armstrong said it was a deceptively complex task framing together images of the 30 womens groups around Aljamal's painting. There's an art to making a whole work of that monumental size "hang" properly, Armstrong says. At one stage, it was all held by 800 safety pins. "It was good to be involved in something like this. It's pretty awesome." The project was backed by Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley and her Embrace Diversity campaign, as well as by Hampton Park Community House. Late last year, Ms Graley said it was a "fantastic opportunity to bring together our diverse local community" and tell their stories. "They have shaped our community across generations and I have just loved bringing their contributions to life through this beautiful quilt." The project was granted $5000 by the State Government. The quilt will be launched at Bunjil Place on 5 May, 2-5pm.

Trial solution to hoon hell By Cam Lucadou-Wells A hoon hotspot in Narre Warren will be closed off with bollards under a six-month trial by Casey Council. The news was celebrated by dozens of residents at Prospect Hill Road, who had lobbied for the shutdown of the eastern cul-de-sac since October. The turnbowl had been a haunt for drifting, skids, drug deals, vandalism, smashed glass, dumped tyres and burnt-out cars, residents had claimed. As recently as 6 April, an errant vehicle had ploughed onto a nature strip and splintered a resident’s fence. It was not the first time. Over several years, cars and dirt bikes had carved tracks into the adjoining park’s lawns. The asphalt turnbowl is thickly laced with skidmarks. Resident Michael Presta said that residents were “absolutely rapt” in the trial. “The residents who live close up will be able to sleep at night. They won’t have to worry about when cars will go through their front windows. “I’m glad that the council ended up working with us and they listened to our concerns.” At a 17 April meeting, councillors resolved to temporarily block the cul-de-sac with bollards and rails at 69 Prospect Hill Road. It will cost about $3000. The temporary option was preferred to ascertain if a road closure would “fully eliminate” residents’ concerns, a council report stated. In the lead-up, council officers and councillor Rosalie Crestani met with concerned residents. The council had also questioned whether VicRoads was responsible for the deadend section of the road, which connects to a Monash Freeway reserve with soundwalls and a footbridge. When the bollards go up, residents plan to celebrate the reclamation with a barbecue.

Man wanted over burglary Police have released footage of a man who may be able to assist an investigation into an attempted home burglary in Narre Warren. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives say a man unsuccessfully tried to open a locked front door at a Lantana Drive home about 12.15pm on 7 April. He allegedly cut wire on a security camera and broke a garage window but didn't gain entry to the property. Green fields ahead for club’s bowlers By Cam Lucadou-Wells Rolling on a wave of success, Narre Warren Bowls Club has scored funding for a new synthetic green at its Magid Drive headquarters. The project landed $150,000 in the upcoming 2018-'19 State Budget on top of $20,000 of federal funds. Club president Eric Sydenham said the artificial green will be a boon for the 170-member club for the next 15-plus years. It will remove the expense and time of tending, spraying and rolling the existing grass green - and make all of the rinks available every day of the year. "We had to stop using the grass green for three months to allow it to recover, and had to send our teams to nearby clubs to play," Mr

Sydenham said. "We won't have that problem again - as long as it's not hailing." It is further good news for the club, which recently replaced a synthetic green that was damaged by floodwaters. Mr Sydenham said the club was thriving financially and in pennant competition. Two of its teams were promoted up a division after winning finals. A side also came a competitive second out of 80 teams in a regional final against Palm Lakes in Melbourne's West. It has big plans to drive up members by taking advantage of its prime location near Fountain Gate shopping centre and Bunjil Place. The club has opened its doors to all-ability bowlers, bare-foot and social members, as well

as welcoming work functions and Christmas parties to use its greens and clubrooms. Ambitiously there are also plans for a lightweight translucent canopy with LED ceiling lights to ensure the greens operate rain, hail or shine. The club hopes the $235,000 synthetic green will be installed by the start of pennant competition in November. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the funding will help the club "train, compete and grow". "Clubs like Narre Warren Bowls Club are the cornerstone of local communities - that's why we're backing them with record investment." The funding was provided through the State Government's $60 million Community Sports Fund as part of the State Budget. ay, 11

Shining on Super Sunday By Russell Bennett It was a Super Sunday of results for the Pakenham Warriors at Cardinia Life on the weekend with both their Big V Youth League men's and women's basketball sides once again showing they're forces to be reckoned with in season 2018. The women's side is just a win off top spot on the ladder after a commanding 17-point win in the first of Sunday's double-header clashes. While Jill Appleton's side controlled proceedings for much of the first half - with their constant defensive pressure a real standout - it was a trifecta of threes late in the second quarter that confirmed their dominance, as they

entered the main break 20 points up, 47-27. The Warriors continued to set the pace throughout the second half, ultimately winning 81-64 off the back of the stellar play of 19-year-old forward Beth Quadara (22 points 8 rebounds, and 5 assists), 15-year-old guard Rhiannon Gallagher (18 points and 4 steals), and star player Ellie Coutts (12 points on 4-5 from deep). proved particularly tough for the Cougars to handle early in the second half as they were down 51-33. But despite a couple of defensive lapses from the Warriors throughout the remainder of the contest, they had the answers when they needed them most. Ned Weideman was among the standouts for the home side with 20 points including four three pointers, while Lee Belton added 16 points - including four threes of his own. On Saturday night, Pajdic's side picked up their first win of the weekend with a stellar two-point victory over the Thoroughbreds in Melton, 64-62. finished with a 14-point, 11-rebound doubledouble. The only downside of the weekend for the Warriors was a 26-point loss on Saturday night to Brent Russell's Division 2 senior men's side - again at Melton. The visitors were comprehensively outplayed in the 105-79 defeat, due in large part to a stunning display from Emmanuel Malou. To say he was 'lights out' from the field is somewhat of an understatement, considering he drained 13 of 17 from the field in his 37-point outing. Pakenham is currently third on the Division 2 Men's ladder, sixth in Youth League 2 Men's, and third in Youth League 2 Women's.

South east's rising stars of the game By Russell Bennett If local young boxing stars Lockie Byrne and Jordan Seaborne progress as far in the next 12 months as they have in the past year, then look out. The pair of 13-year-olds, who train at Officer's Urban Boxer gym under managing director and head trainer Nathan Skeen, have already put the boxing world on notice, but their performances recently at the nationals were nothing short of jaw-dropping. Byrne walked away as the Australian champion at 52 kilograms, while Seaborne picked up a silver medal in the 34-kilogram division. "They're really achieving great things, and they feel like they're making something of themselves," Skeen said. "Jordan just has this larger than life personality. But in the ring he's a pure assassin. He stopped his opponent - the 50-kilogram champion from last year - in the second round of his title fight, with the referee forced to step in "It looked like it was going to be an awkward fight at the start, because of this kid's style, but he just kept it together and started landing these really clean, crisp shots and once he did he just kept the momentum going," Skeen explained. "He scored an eight-count in the first round, and the unanswered blows in the second just added up and the referee jumped in." The results of both youngsters just go to show the work being put in at Urban Boxer. It truly is a breeding ground of young champions.

But the gym not only provides a home for some of the area's most prodigiously-talented amateur boxers to fine-tune their craft, it also provides an elite conditioning and personal training environment for anyone looking to improve their fitness base. The Station Street-based gym caters to absolutely anyone of any ability - young or old, experienced or just starting out. Skeen started boxing when he was just 14 and ultimately went on to train under some of the biggest names in the game, including John Tandy and Ian Burbedge in the UK, and the legendary Johnny Lewis in Sydney - former trainer of world champions Jeff Fenech and Kostya Tszyu. The eye-opening experience helped mould Skeen into the trainer he is today. He's now focused on the amateur scene in Melbourne, and mentoring the likes of Byrne and Seaborne who also picked up silver medals from the Adelaide junior nationals last year.

The Lions are set to roar By Russell Bennett The wait is over. In less than two weeks, Pakenham's inaugural South Eastern Women's Football team will take to the field for their first game. And for some of the Lions' players, that opportunity is one they've waited years for. "I've been here for five years and I've been waiting for a side to start in Pakenham," said Rachel Betteridge, a key part of Pakenham's first women's playing group. "I used to play for Melbourne Uni in the city, so I jumped at this opportunity." Natalie Staunton has also been waiting in the wings, biding her time. "I've always wanted to play football, but Pakenham never had a side." A number of ladies in the inaugural group are local mums, so the practicality of being able to compete in a side almost on their doorstep is crucial. Now the stars have aligned for them to play their footy in their home town, wearing the famous Pakenham colours, and they couldn't be more proud. But their opportunity has come about through power of hard work done by the likes of women's football co-ordinator Nicky Muley, and it hasn't gone unnoticed. "We started training back in November," Betteridge said. "We had three of us and then we saw a few extra numbers, and then they dropped off. It's only really the past six to eight weeks we've seen the numbers really improve. "Nic (Muley) has been doing a lot of advertising, and we've just been asked to get family and friends along. Each week one of the girls will bring down a new player, and it's just grown from there." Betteridge said the difference in the play-

But the group is always on the lookout for more players willing to join in the fun and excitement of the inaugural side. Age, footy experience, and fitness levels don't matter - anyone willing to roll their sleeves up and have a crack is welcome.

Newly appointed coach Warren Cawcutt said the group is also particularly keen to strengthen its ties to the girls currently playing for the Pakenham Junior Football Club. "It's up to us as a club, and a senior women's side, to encourage the girls from the junior club to come through with us," he said. "I'd love for our senior women's team to

train with the girls on a night coming up soon." The Lakeside Community Bank and Voyage Fitness have jumped on board the inaugural Pakenham women's side, but they're always on the hunt for more support. Pakenham's Gracie Elite Australia academy has solidified its reputation as the home of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the south east after gobsmacking numbers took part in their first dedicated Jiu Jitsu competition recently. The academy in Pakenham has been running for five years and recently moved into bigger premises on Bald Hill Road. It's there that a staggering 87 athletes took part in over 200 fights as a way of showcasing their skills and discipline learned under Jhunior Guarnido, who has well over 20 years' experience in the discipline in his own right. There was over 300 people in attendance for the competition - a number that blew Guarnido away. But it also goes to show the level of professionalism at Gracie Elite. Guarnido has been coaching Jiu Jitsu for decades and also has a university degree in physical education. "We're on the right path, we're doing the right work, and we're always doing the right thing and helping people," he said. Gracie Elite is set to host another competition in September, by which point Guarnido may have to book an even bigger location to hold the event. "With the next competition, I don't know if I'll be able to fit everyone here. We're looking at over 120 athletes." At the recent competition, the athletes ranged from four-years-old to 60. "Anyone can do Jiu Jitsu, regardless of age or fitness level," Guarnido said. "Everyone really can do it." He said that initial competition was a significant step in the club's journey. "I can't imagine where we'll be in five years from now," he added. But for Guarnido, Gracie Elite is only as big as the sum of its parts. "I feel like I'm just a little part of the gym," he said. "I planted the seed, and that's grown into a beautiful tree. But the tree isn't only me - it's everyone around me. "It makes me feel really happy that my students want to pass it forward and show that we're different. We're here to help people, and that's our bigger purpose."
