By Cam Lucadou-Wells Five-year-old Aoife apparently doesn’t want to be a princess. She wants to be a super-hero.

And what an impressive start she has made to her chosen career.

In November, Aoife rushed to the rescue when mother Lindsey Forsyth collapsed unconscious and stopped breathing at their Berwick home.

Alone with her two-year-old sister Kiesha, Aoife rang triple-zero.

Under the instructions of the operator, she performed CPR on her mother until paramedics arrived.

Aoife had got used to her mother collapsing due to a medical condition POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) and a neutrally mediated syncope.

In short, Ms Forsyth’s heart rate and blood pressure drop away, causing blood to drain from her legs and “I hit the floor”.

On this occasion, Mum hit her head on the laundry door and didn’t wake up.

“I never thought I’d need to teach her CPR,” Ms Forsyth said.

“They think my heart stopped, but they don’t know for sure.”

Listening back to a recording of the triplezero call, Ms Forsyth said it sounded like “chatting about your favourite TV program”.

Is your mother awake? No Is she breathing? No. The two children didn’t freak out, didn’t cry.

Aoife probably doesn’t realise the enormity of what she did, Ms Forsyth said.

“She finds me unconscious quite often.”

However Aoife certainly knows what she wants. When her grandparents sent her a princess costume, she told them she required a Batman suit.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Victoria Cross family is an exclusive club.

There are just four surviving Australian recipients of perhaps the world’s highest award for valour.

One of them is the charismatic Keith Payne VC, who headed a roll-call of notables at a sellout launch of the book The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers at Bunjil Place on 21 April.

The 420-page richly-illustrated volume honours the 100 Australian awardees, the medal and also the men’s families.

It involved travelling the world to gravesites and a hyper-secure vault containing the VC’s originating bronze lump.

The author Michael Madden of Berwick even gained rare access to the diaries of the medal’s instigator Queen Victoria.

For many of the families, the book was the first time their heroes have been described in their own words. These lofty heroes have never seemed more human.

“They are put in a situation, they had to make a decision and they act,” Mr Madden told the 800-plus audience at Bunjil’s theatre.

“Keith Payne had a long career. In some

ways, he’s just a veteran, just a man like any other.

“But what he did (to earn the VC) wasn’t normal.”

As a wounded commanding officer, Mr Payne covered for his troops’ withdrawal from a heavy North Vietnamese attack during the Vietnam War in May 1969.

For three hours, he searched for injured soldiers while under fire. He found 40 of them and led them to safety through enemy territory.

“I was the company commander and it was my responsibility to look after my soldiers,” the 84-year-old told the 800-strong gathering at Bunjil.

“I wasn’t going to ask someone else to do a job I wasn’t going to do myself.”

Like many veterans, he suffered post-traumatic stress after his military service.

But as his spirits started to rise, he made himself a pledge: “If I’m going to live, I’m going to live a happy life.”

He added that one enduring problem he had were some marks that scarred his face.

“That’s only because the girls don’t kiss me - they bite me.”

Mr Payne was joined on stage by Doug

Baird, the father of the late Cameron Baird VC. He was awarded Australia’s most recent VC for his “ultimate self-sacrifice” leading multiple charges under fire as a Commando Team Commander in deep enemy territory in Afghanistan in 2013.

Cameron was killed in the endeavour, which repeatedly neutralised enemy threats and helped preserve the lives of his team members.

His parents help run a not-for-profit charity Cam’s Cause in his memory.

It has raised more than $35,000 for the welfare of Australia’s returned Commandos.

“By doing that, it allows us to carry on what we believe Cam would be doing,” Mr Baird said.

After the launch, Mr Payne, Mr Baird and Mr Madden shook hands with long lines of admirers as they signed copies of the book.

Others took the chance to handle the late Reg Rattey’s Victoria Cross, observing its unique name and date inscriptions on the back. Such medals are estimated to be worth up to $1.5 million.

It was all academic to son Rob Rattey; the medal will be never going up for sale, he told

the audience.

About 130 members of VC families gathered for the launch - what is believed to be some sort of record.

One of them was 97-year-old Daphne Dunne, the widow of Albert Chowne VC, who travelled from Sydney for the event.

Another was Faye Axford, of Endeavour Hills, is a great-niece of Thomas ‘Jack’ Axford VC as well as a great-niece by marriage to the highly-decorated Albert Jacka VC. She described the event as one that would go down in history.

“It will never be forgotten. We’ll never get something like this again.”

Mr Jacka’s great-nephew David Streatfield, of Greensborough, was interviewed for the book.

Some inaccurate accounts had been given about his illustrious ancestor’s life. It was a chance to put the record straight on the man, Mr Streatfield said.

All of the book’s proceeds will go to the critical service The Totally and Permanently Disabled Soldiers Association of Victoria.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk Some of their stories defy description and this is why Anzac has become a legend that verges on myth.

We present the case of Walter Peeler, VC, BEM. As told in a new book, this extraordinary man won the British Empire’s highest decoration for valour - the Victoria Cross.

But prior to that he had been courtmartialled and stripped of his rank after a fellow Anzac was accidentally shot during a lesson on the Lewis gun, a WWI light machine-gun.

It was the same type of weapon Peeler - his rank restored - was using a few months later in an attack on Broodseinde Ridge on the Western Front.

In that action, firing his machinegun from the hip, he ran across exposed ground, ultimately accounting for over 30 enemy soldiers in all - and winning his VC in the process.

But he wasn’t finished there.

He lied about his age - downwards and signed up again for WWII. There, he found himself a prisoner of the Japanese on the Burma Railway.

Remarkably, the Japanese under their Bushido Code redognised his honour and, rather than treating him harshly, actually treated him better.

There’s enough adventure in that lifetime for 10 men.

But it’s hard to think of a man who more embodied the Anzac spirit - he was clearly a larrikin as well as a fighter, and a man who understood better than most the fine line between the VC and a courtmartial.

Honour these men not as legends, but for the flesh and blood men they were.

Little man Mingkun builds a LEGO future

By Brendan Rees He's built space ships, pirate ships, houses, trains and more - and now Mingkun Chen of Clyde North has been crowned Australia's newest mini LEGO builder.

The LEGO-mad six-year-old wowed the judges by his very speedy creation of a LEGOmade giraffe at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre's at Chadstone Shopping Centre on Saturday 21 April.

Mingkun was one of three youngsters aged between six and 10 to take out the inaugural LEGO Masters event for Australia - a children's LEGO building competition - and declared as the 2018 Mini Model builder.

The bricks were flying when forty of the nation's most passionate little LEGO fans put their brick-building and creativity skills to the test, competing in a series of LEGO challenges throughout the day.

Mingkun's mother Zhenning Chen says he

spends hours building models from the colour bricks "whenever he has time."

"We were really proud of him when he was accepted as finalist," she said.

"He became super fan of Lego since he was two years old.

"He builds both by instructions and his own creations. He has built hundreds of sets."

Mingkun was presented with a LEGO-made trophy and will enjoy some bricktastic prizes including unlimited entry to the attraction for a year and a free birthday party hosting up to 20 of their friends or a free school excursion for their class.

He will also have the opportunity to attend exclusive building workshops and preview events at the Melbourne attraction over the next twelve months.

The competition was judged by LEGOLAND Discovery Centre's Master Model Builder, David Holder, who was impressed by the

'Safe Schools' slammed

By Brendan Rees Outspoken parents have slammed the controversial Safe Schools program for "messing with our children's identity," during a Casey Council backed forum held at Bunjil Place on Thursday 19 April.

In blistering speeches in front of more than 200 people, three mothers and a spokesperson for the Family Council of Victoria spoke of their opposition to the State Governmentfunded program which aims to promote inclusiveness for "same-sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse" students.

It was "grooming" children and left parents "feeling powerless" and with a "serious loss of rights," speakers claimed.

The forum, which was chaired by Casey councillors Rosalie Crestani and Susan Serey, came after it was scrapped and then reinstated minutes later during a heated Casey Council meeting on 17 April.

One of the original panellists, leading psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg dropped out after publically labelling it a "brain-washing exercise."

Two petitions were distributed to attendees seeking that the Safe Schools program to be stopped - this was not endorsed by Casey Council.

Mother Cella White spoke at the forum, saying parents often told her they were "too scared" to approach their school as they didn't want their children "being made a target."

Some parents weren't even aware of the program being delivered at their schools, she said.

During her speech, she said parents had told her: "When safe school staff came to visit at school assembly it was heavily implied that if the students didn't take part in Wear It Purple Day (an LGBT awareness day) they were partly responsible for homosexual deaths in Africa."

"This is a horrible thing to do to children, horrible. This is about fighting back against cultural Marxism and communism which is right on our doorstep."

Spokesperson for the Family Council of Victoria Bill Muehlenberg said the program would increase gender dysphoria in children, where someone's biological sex doesn't align with their gender identity.

"The simple solution is leave the body alone and deal with any mental psychological problems. That's where we need to help our young people," he said.

One teacher, who asked to remain anonymous, said she was disappointed the forum's panel was "very one-sided."

She said she was "fully supportive" of the program, saying her school, which she wished not to reveal, was delivering the Safe Schools program and only ever had one complaint about children transgendering.

"Parents find our school very open and honest. We don't have a lot of bullying, we don't have a lot of harassment; our kids tend to accept other kids for who they are," she said.

Liberal Member for Narre Warren North Vikki Fitzgerald said the program was "wasting crucial class time with explicit sexualised content."

"We need to clear the ideological clutter from the curriculum and get the focus back to where it belongs," she said.

Victorian director of the Australian Christian Lobby Dan Flynn also called on the State Government to scrap the "Marxist cultural program" which "imposed gender fluidity ideology" on children.

Cr Crestani said she was concerned the State Government had already "pulled the trigger" on parents and children.

She said "so called myths" on the Victorian education website were "actually calling you all lies."

Administrator for the Facebook group, Stand up for Parents Rights, Stop Sexualising our Children, Evelyn, who asked not to reveal her surname, said: "Why was instruction in gender, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation approved without consultation with various parental bodies, objective mental professionals, educational professionals?"

Right to hold forum I think Councillor Crestani and the Casey Council should be congratulated on holding a forum of this kind.

All children need to feel safe in their school environment.

Safe Schools and Respectful Relationships is a deceptive title as this program is anything but safe or respectful of all people. Parents have a right to know what their children are being taught and the no parental consent and no opt-out are major red flags for this program.

Big crowd for first dawn

By Brendan Rees Thousands gathered for the inaugural Anzac Day dawn service at Bunjil Place to pay respect to Australian and New Zealand Diggers who fought and died for their countries.

Clear conditions and the sound of bagpipes played by Berwick Pipers member Marie Everett greeted more than 2000 people.

Just before daybreak, political dignitaries, members of the Berwick RSL sub-branch, emergency service members and the public were invited to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph as a mark of respect to the men and women who served their country.

Berwick RSL sub-branch secretary Chris McKenna led the morning service, with Reverend Elywn Sparks leading the crowd in prayer.

This years' service marked a significant milestone in Australia's military history, Mr Kenna said, marking a century since the second Battle of Dernacourt, the Battle for VillersBretonneux, the Battle at Hamel and Armistice Day, now referred to as Remembrance Day. Berwick RSL sub-branch president Wayne A'Vard gave the Anzac address, speaking of the values and the sacrifices made by all those who have gone to war.

"Let us this morning reflect on the deeds of those young men who understood and accepted their responsibilities who believed in mateship, integrity, loyalty, family, honour and respect," he said.

Mr A'Vard said he was "really chuffed" by the turnout of people at the service.

"It's very, very special. It's a commemoration, not a celebration of the sacrifices been done, not just in the past but of our men and women whereever they may be (serving for Australia)."

Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne said he was also impressed by the huge turn out - both young and old.

"This day has become increasingly significant, and for me it is the most national day to honour those that made the sacrifice for our country," he said.

The service continued with The Last Post, which was played by Greg Marks and his granddaughter Scarlett.

This was followed by a minute's silence, the recitation of the Ode of Remembrance and the national anthem being played.

Bunjil Place, where veterans and community members shared stories.

Forty-six volunteers from the Rotary Club of Narre Warren and Families, Rotary Club of Berwick, Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club, SES Narre Warren and the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren helped with the morning service.

Convenor for the Rotary Club of Narre Warren Tim Fisher said "The City of Casey provides fantastic help through the setting up of the venue and assistance during the event."

War veteran Ray Heathcote said it was important the spirit of the Anzac lived on to honour the service and sacrifice of Australian men and women.

March moves High Street

By Rowan Forster Thousands gathered in Berwick on Anzac Day to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the sanctity of Australian life.

High Street was closed to traffic throughout the day as cadets, soldiers, veterans and students marched through the crowds with flags, rifles and instruments in tow.

The 11am service concluded with a picturesque fly-by from the Australian Air Force - signifying the beginning of the parade.

Early estimates suggest at least 3000 people attended. Berwick RSL president Wayne A'Vard addressed the community, citing the importance of the commemoration.

"It's important on this day to remember those who served and the sacrifices they made," he said.

"We will always remember those who suffered in the war, those who died and their families."

For Michelle Jenkins, commemorating the heroic actions of the Anzac soldiers was a "must".

She told Star News of her son's personal experience when he was dispatched from Darwin and deployed to Iraq in 2003.

"I've never felt so scared in my life - it gave me extra insight as to what their families must have gone through," she said.

"When he justified it to me, he told me, 'I'm a solder and I chose to do this', which made

me so proud."

Her son returned from the deployment physically unscathed, but the tenure took a toll on his emotional state.

"He didn't want to talk about it for so long," Ms Jenkins said.

Fortunately, Ms Jenkins' son later overcame the trauma and has since turned over a new leaf.

Berwick RSL has also been conducting commemoration services in aged care residences and schools in the lead up to Anzac Day.

Remembering war heroes The latest in a long line of fascinating war stories have been dug up by the intrepid investigators of the Narre Warren and District Family History Group.

Group members hosted their fourth commemorative cemetery walk at Cranbourne on Sunday 22 April, following similar events at Berwick, Pakenham and Harkaway since the Anzac Centenary celebrations in 2015.

Jane Rivett-Carnac said the event was a tremendous success.

“The weather was perfect and we had a good time meeting local families, our loyal followers and new visitors all enjoyed the experience,” she said.

“We have tried to do our bit in honouring the many local families who waited for sons and daughters to return from the Great War. “We have one more walk at the end of October at Lang Lang Cemetery and we will then have visited five Casey and Cardinia cemeteries and researched and written close to 500 stories.”

A book has been produced to coincide with each walk - this one entitled They Answered The Call: a World War I Walk in Cranbourne Cemetery.

Among the stories uncovered was that of the Nurse family. Harry and Ellen Nurse had three children serve in the Great War - one signing up at only 13 - and two of those also saw action in World War II as well.

Their stories are: Gunner Edward Joseph Nurse Edward was a 37-year-old farmer at Lynwood in Cranbourne when he enlisted on 1 December 1915. Assigned to the reinforcements of the 14th Field Artillery Brigade, Edward trained in Egypt in the middle of 1916 before sailing to England. He seems to have spent the rest of his service in England before

Edward was 64 when he died on 9 March 1941 and was buried at Melbourne Cemetery.

Captain Edwin Scott Nurse Edwin Scott Nurse was just 13 when he was the first of seven Victorian boys to be accepted into the Royal Australian Navy’s first intake of midshipmen cadets in 1912. During World War I Edwin was serving in the North Sea, he was promoted to acting sub-lieutenant on 1 September 1918. While based in Sydney Edwin married Marion Glenn, they then moved

to Queenscliff in 1931 when he was posted to Swan Island. During World War II Edwin was based in London. In 1947 Edwin had been promoted to Captain and in 1953 he received the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Medal. He retired in 1956 he had served continuously for 44 years. Edwin and Marion did not have any children, Edwin died in 1972 at Heidelberg aged seventy-two. Edwin’s elder brother served in the Army.

Brigadier Henry Scott Nurse Brigadier Henry Scott Nurse had completed two years and 23 days at the Royal Military College Duntroon when he enlisted on 16

April 1916, as a 19-year-old he was commissioned as a Lieutenant. Henry served with the 20th Battery of the 8th Field Artillery Brigade on the Western Front; he was also seconded to administrative duty in England. In 1918 he was transferred to Egypt as an instructor and administrator. During the demobilisation period Henry was ‘brought to notice of the minister for his Meritorious Service during that time.

Henry married Evelyn Neill at Queenscliff in 1920 and they had two sons. Henry served in London during World War II and in 1950 was Brigadier Inspector General of Munitions at Army Headquarters Melbourne. Henry was 84 when he died in 1981 at Camberwell.

Care message Students were urged to care for their mates at a pre-Anzac Day service at Fountain Gate Secondary College.

Among the long lists of dignitaries at the 24 April service were a former naval dentist and a retired soldier from the group Young Veterans.

In an inspiring speech, Anita Hogan ABDEN told students how the Australian Defence Force values kept her in good stead.

All the same, many young veterans have daily struggles after their term of service. Often the injuries aren't seen and so are dismissed.

"Never assume someone is OK. Show them that you care," was Ms Hogan's message to students.

"The one thing you say to them may change their life and change your life."

Touching on her early challenges, Ms Hogan urged students to not be defined by their mistakes. "It's what you do afterwards that counts."

Also there was fellow Young Veteran Rodney Hargrave, who served in the Australian Army and Australian Intelligence Corps in Iraq, Afghanistan, Solomon Islands and East Timor.

The ceremony has been a tradition at the school since 2002.

It was marked by an entrance procession with pipers, flag-bearers and speeches from military members about their wartime experience.

The college's intermediate concert band played A Song For Peace.

Its student Jacob Eisho, who received the Premier's Spirit of ANZAC Award 2017, also spoke.

Young Veterans was formed in Melbourne's South-East by brothers Scott and Chris May as a way of reaching out to contemporary exservicepeople.

Sewing seed of diversity

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A massive quilt stitching together 30 Casey multicultural groups is a powerful show of the adage 'strength in diversity'.

Artist Dena Aljamal, of Keysborough, conceived a mighty image of a sun-lit dancer as the centrepiece to the 4-square-metre craftwork.

The dancer is something of a universal language, crossing all of the 30 groups from all over the world, she says.

"I wanted something to satisfy everyone.

"It's nice that in Australia we have this harmony between each other.

"We love the respect in this country, in this safe country."

The project was conceived in meetings with the groups 18 months ago, discussing the difficulties faced by migrant women.

After moving from Dubai on a professional visa, Aljamal was frustratingly unable to have her pharmacy qualifications recognised in Australia.

She sat for exams 10 times unsuccessfully.

She set on a new course of interior design - graduating with an award at Holmesglen Institute.

Casey is becoming like a "city of art" crowned by the recently-built Bunjil Place arts centre, she says.

"But this project is not just for the City of Casey, it's for Victoria and for Australia."

Berwick quilter Claire Armstrong said it was a deceptively complex task framing together images of the 30 womens groups around Aljamal's painting.

At one stage, it was all held by 800 safety pins.

"It was good to be involved in something like this. It's pretty awesome."

The project was backed by Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley and her Embrace Diversity campaign, as well as by Hampton Park Community House.

Late last year, Ms Graley said it was a "fantastic opportunity to bring together our diverse local community" and tell their stories.

"They have shaped our community across generations and I have just loved bringing their contributions to life through this beautiful quilt."

The project was granted $5000 by the State Government.

The quilt will be launched at Bunjil Place on 5 May, 2-5pm.

School ‘bully’ mob strikes

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An alleged high-school bullying saga led to an angry mob of adults and students confronting the 14-year-old bully outside his house in Cranbourne, a court heard.

The alleged bully turned victim as he, his 17-year-old brother and 19-year-old ‘auntie’ were punched, pushed, felled and kicked by members of the group on an afternoon in late April 2017.

The mob included children in school uniform as well as the alleged bullying victim’s 48-year-old father and 56-year-old godfather, both of whom faced court on affray charges.

Footage of the violence, screaming, yelling and abuse was filmed on a mobile phone and viewed at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 17 April.

On video, after the initial flurry of punches, the father says: “We came here to talk, bro.

“I came here to talk because I’m not happy.”

The assault continued off-screen, police claimed.

The “emotionally high level” father was trying to calm things down, his lawyer told the court.

He was frustrated about his son possibly being bullied and assaulted at school four times.

The son was treated in a head trauma unit at hospital after one of the attacks, the lawyer said.

The father, who owns a trucking business, was taking significant painkillers as he awaited hip surgery. He had a heart condition and high blood pressure.

He was not a violent man, apart from a nonconviction for a “minor” recklessly causing injury charge more than 20 years ago, his lawyer said.

The godfather pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of riotous behaviour. He didn’t actively take part but kept watch on the nature strip

Police are investigating after a man was allegedly struck with a baseball bat on Alberton Drive in Cranbourne West on Monday 23 April.

It is believed the victim was approached by a man outside an address and a verbal altercation took place before the victim was struck just after 6pm.

Police are currently interviewing one of the men involved. The other man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The godfather’s lawyer said there was no evidence he knew violence would proceed when he gave two males a lift to the incident.

Nor that he knew that his son took a set of knuckle-dusters to the encounter.

He was being treated for depression after the death of another son, the court heard.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen questioned the motives of the mob attending the house.

Was it to “bully him back?”, he asked.

“There doesn’t seem to be much discussion here.

“You’ve got a large group that confront children in their own home and then there’s violence.

“It’s not very bright but very stupid ... to take children around there.”

He said bullying concerns could have been dealt by the school or police. Instead the situation got out of hand, and could have led to more dangerous consequences.

The father was convicted and fined $1000 for affray.

The godfather was fined $500 without conviction.

A third adult’s hearing was adjourned due to being injured as a victim of a recent home invasion.

Several bones were broken and several surgeries had since taken place, the third coaccused’s lawyer told the court.

Mr Vandersteen noted that the third adult appeared to be the aggressor. The video showed an exchange of punches with the 14-year-old boy.

His case was adjourned to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 May.

Trial solution to hoon hell

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A hoon hotspot in Narre Warren will be closed off with bollards under a six-month trial by Casey Council.

The news was celebrated by dozens of residents at Prospect Hill Road, who had lobbied for the shutdown of the eastern cul-de-sac since October.

The turnbowl had been a haunt for drifting, skids, drug deals, vandalism, smashed glass, dumped tyres and burnt-out cars, residents had claimed.

As recently as 6 April, an errant vehicle had ploughed onto a nature strip and splintered a resident’s fence. It was not the first time.

Over several years, cars and dirt bikes had carved tracks into the adjoining park’s lawns.

The asphalt turnbowl is thickly laced with skidmarks.

Resident Michael Presta said that residents were “absolutely rapt” in the trial.

“The residents who live close up will be able to sleep at night. They won’t have to worry about when cars will go through their front windows.

“I’m glad that the council ended up working with us and they listened to our concerns.”

At a 17 April meeting, councillors resolved to temporarily block the cul-de-sac with bollards and rails at 69 Prospect Hill Road.

It will cost about $3000.

The temporary option was preferred to ascertain if a road closure would “fully eliminate” residents’ concerns, a council report stated.

In the lead-up, council officers and councillor Rosalie Crestani met with concerned residents.

The council had also questioned whether VicRoads was responsible for the deadend section of the road, which connects to a Monash Freeway reserve with soundwalls and a footbridge.

When the bollards go up, residents plan to celebrate the reclamation with a barbecue.

Library demolition creates a carpark

Casey Cardinia Libraries are collecting personal hygiene products for females who are struck by poverty and homelessness.

As part of the Share the Dignity drive, pink collection boxes for donated tampons and sanitary pads are stationed outside the libraries in April and August.

Casey Cardinia Libraries chief executive Chris Buckingham said it was important that everyone in the community felt respected, welcome and safe.

"Share the Dignity is about helping people who are in real need.

"Homelessness and family violence are big challenges for our community and people can make a real difference close to home with small acts of kindness."

Share the Dignity is a charity founded by Rochelle Courtenay.

She said it helped alleviate the undignified dilemma that thousands of women had to endure.

"So many women every month have to forfeit sanitary products because they cannot afford them."

The donated products will be distributed to registered charities in May and September.

The former Casey Council offices are set for demolition in May. 133930 on the surrounding area with affected stakeholders and the community.”

A competitive tender has been awarded to R & C Asphalt Paving for the demolition and car park construction.

Works are due to begin in late May, and finish by the end of October.

Its cost is reported to be within the council’s $1.8 million budget, though its exact figure has kept confidential.

About 80 extra car parking spaces will be created after demolition of Narre Warren’s former civic centre and library, according to Casey Council.

The project will help to address complaints about parking shortages at the nearby Bunjil Place, though not the lack of nearby disability spaces.

According to a council report, the 79 extra car spaces were required to meet planning requirements for Bunjil Place.

The civic-arts precinct, which opened in October, includes a replacement library and council offices - as well as 155 car spaces already built.

Mayor Geoff Ablett said the former buildings were “old and tired”, requiring significant funds to bring them up to standard.

“The old Civic Centre was originally built in 1978, with further works being undertaken in 1984.

“Both buildings served the public for over 30 years and have now reached the end of their useful life.”

Cr Ablett said the land would be used for “other purposes” as well as the 80-space car park and intermediate works.

“We are currently undertaking the planning work required to understand Council and community requirements for the area and the precinct as a whole.

“Council will work to ensure disruptions from demolition are minimal and will communicate any impacts these works will have

Green fields ahead for club’s bowlers

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Rolling on a wave of success, Narre Warren Bowls Club has scored funding for a new synthetic green at its Magid Drive headquarters.

The project landed $150,000 in the upcoming 2018-'19 State Budget on top of $20,000 of federal funds.

Club president Eric Sydenham said the artificial green will be a boon for the 170-member club for the next 15-plus years.

It will remove the expense and time of tending, spraying and rolling the existing grass green - and make all of the rinks available every day of the year.

"We had to stop using the grass green for three months to allow it to recover, and had to send our teams to nearby clubs to play," Mr Sydenham said.

"We won't have that problem again - as long as it's not hailing."

It is further good news for the club, which recently replaced a synthetic green that was damaged by floodwaters.

Mr Sydenham said the club was thriving financially and in pennant competition.

Two of its teams were promoted up a division after winning finals.

A side also came a competitive second out of 80 teams in a regional final against Palm Lakes in Melbourne's West.

It has big plans to drive up members by taking advantage of its prime location near Fountain Gate shopping centre and Bunjil Place.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives say a man unsuccessfully tried to open a locked front door at a Lantana Drive home about 12.15pm on 7 April.

Ambitiously there are also plans for a lightweight translucent canopy with LED ceiling lights to ensure the greens operate rain, hail or shine.

The club hopes the $235,000 synthetic green will be installed by the start of pennant competition in November.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the funding will help the club "train, compete and grow".

"Clubs like Narre Warren Bowls Club are the cornerstone of local communities - that's why we're backing them with record investment."

The funding was provided through the State Government's $60 million Community Sports Fund as part of the State Budget.

Celebrate a strong faith Catholic schools across the Diocese of Sale will have the opportunity to celebrate their identity and mission with their local communities during Catholic Education Week.

The 2018 Catholic Education Week theme is ‘Come and See’. This year Catholic Education Week will be celebrated from 27 April to 4 May. Catholic Education Week offers all 44 schools in the Diocese of Sale the opportunity to celebrate their Catholic identity and educative mission.

The theme for Catholic Education Week is inspired by the words of Jesus as proclaimed in John’s Gospel, ‘come and see’ (John 1:39).

In his 2017 letter to young people, Pope Francis asked young people to be open to the voice of Jesus in their lives and to be prepared to undertake a journey with him to discern God’s plan for them.

During Catholic Education Week all people involved in the endeavour of Catholic education are invited to consider how they are being called to “come and see.”

Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Sale Maria Kirkwood encouraged everyone involved in Catholic education to be open to the invitation to respond to the per-

sonal call of Jesus to ‘come and see.’

“In Catholic Education Week this year, we are all encouraged to continue our journey with Christ in the supportive environment of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Sale,” Ms Kirkwood said.

“Through the invitation of Jesus and the agency of the Holy Spirit, each of us is called to a personal relationship with God. In this, we are not alone. Teachers, students, parents and priests together are witnesses to, and agents of, the good news proclaimed by the living Jesus.

“It is my hope that during Catholic Education Week this year families, parishes and schools embrace this special time and that schools across the diocese can be places of hope and accompaniment where people can come to hear the call of Jesus and be supported in responding to this call in order to make present the Kingdom of God here and now.”

Smart Cities ‘junket’ gets green light

Casey councillors have voted to spend about $27,500 on a study tour in four interstate councils - despite concerns that it may seem like a "junket".

As part of the Smart Cities Domestic Exchange, Crs Sam Aziz, Timothy Jackson and Gary Rowe, a council officer and a scholarship recipient will travel to Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich and Adelaide on June 25-29.

Cr Rowe told a council meeting on 17 April that the exchange would provide "unique access" to experts from leading Smart Cities.

It would be a chance to test ideas during the four days of workshops.

"We're pretty much a blank canvas as far as Smart Cities goes."

Cr Rosalie Crestani dissented on the basis of community expectations that "we have to stop junket tours" especially in a rate-capping environment.

"I support Smart Cities and innovation. It's wonderful to embrace the future ... but we have to be responsible about it."

Cr Aziz raised a point of order against "inappropriate language", namely the term "junket".

He emphasised his council-funded trip to China with Cr Smith this month involved toiling for 12 hours a day.

"It's really low for Cr Crestani to use that word.

"It's an opportunity to further the City of Casey, and we have to stop being simpleminded about it."

Cr Aziz challenged Cr Crestani to provide proof of community opposition in the form of phone calls and emails.

Cr Jackson noted the trip will be funded by unused innovation funds in 2017-'18, so came at no additional cost to ratepayers.

Casey is seeking a $25,000 sponsor for the scholarship to reduce the trip's cost, as well as academic and private-enterprise partners.

According to a council report, the trip is hoped to accelerate Casey's "relatively early" progress as a Smart City through technology and innovation - but without "huge" council investment.

The domestic exchange was preferred ahead of more expensive excursions to international Smart Cities events in Barcelona, Toronto and Singapore.

One of the exchange hosts, Sunshine Coast, has invested in a solar farm and developed Australia's first automated waste collection system.

On the other hand, Ipswich recently made headlines as Australia's first council to dump its recycling services due to China's import restrictions.

Mixed fortunes for Casey

By Hayley Wildes In Big V basketball action, the Casey Cavaliers suffered some disappointing losses, but salvaged the weekend with a couple of key wins.

The Division 1 Women Lady Cavs' unbeaten start to the season ended on Saturday night at Casey Stadium. Taking on the Geelong Supercats, Casey battled hard, but just came up short; 61-64, in a thrilling contest.

Billie Lucas (13 points, 9 rebounds) led the way for the Lady Cavs, while Tanarly Hood (9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) was important on both ends of the court.

The Lady Cavs didn't dwell on their disappointing game against Geelong though, bouncing back against the Latrobe City Energy just 16 hours later. Tanarly Hood (17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals) put on a show against her former team and made them pay at every opportunity. Her activity on both ends of the court set the tone for Casey, as five players scored in double figures.

Casey claimed the win, 79-71, despite the best efforts of La Trobe City's Makenzie Miller (18 points, 20 rebounds), who played all 40 minutes of game time. The Youth League 1 Men found it tough going over the weekend against strong opposition.

Taking on Warrandyte on Saturday night, the Cavs fell just short of the Venom, 69-74.

Jordan Gooiker (17 points, 8 rebounds) led the team, but it wasn't enough as Jarrod Molnar (30 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals) was unstoppable and gave the Venom exactly what they needed, when they needed it.

On Sunday, the Cavs struggled against the Supercats in Geelong. Gooiker (18 points) again top scored for the Cavs, but Geelong had too much in its arsenal, as Max Kos (26 points, 7 rebounds) led the Supercats home, 101-86.

The Youth League 2 Women were firing on all cylinders at Mornington Basketball Stadium on Saturday night. Taking on the Mornington Breakers, the Lady Cavs had great contributions across the board. Tess Young posted a monster double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds, whilst also dishing out 7 assists.

With Young controlling the game on both ends of the court, Lauren Tuplin (25 points) and Kate Bazzucchini (11 points, 12 rebounds) were able to play their natural games as the Lady Cavs led 58-20 at half time and eventually ran out 97-46 winners. The State Championship Men didn't play over the weekend, but will be back in action on Saturday night in Ringwood, taking on the top of the table Hawks squad.

Meanwhile, the Youth League 1 Men take on the Ballarat Miners on Saturday night at Casey Stadium, whilst a Division 1 Women and Youth League 2 Women double-header tips off from 1:30pm at Casey Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

FFV SOCCER WRAP ROUND 4 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST A blistering second half by Richmond SC consigned Casey Comets to a 3-1 loss at Kevin Bartlett Reserve on Friday night.

After the home side picked up the only goal of the first half, the Comets couldn't handle the pressure applied by the well drilled team, conceding to second half goals despite Dejan Radojicic striking his fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute.

The Comets have been a bit up and down so far this season, and sit in fifth spot with a 2-2 record.

In other matches, Beaumaris SC defeated South Springvale 3-2, Eltham drew Caulfield United 0-0, St Kilda SC drew Mornington SC 1-1, Manningham United Blues defeated Morwell Pegasus 2-1 and Malvern City drew Warragul United 0-0.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Berwick City is slowly warming into the 2018 season, notching up its second win of the season in a hard fought contest with Mazenod Victory on Saturday night at Jack Thomas.

The City have been a little inconsistent in the early stages of the season, and certainly brought their game to the fore with an early strike to Chris L'Enclume in the sixth minute.

Victory bounced back to find the back of

the net in the first half, but the match winner came in the 75th minute by Jarod Blackbourn, who gave the City a much needed victory and some momentum heading into a crunch block of football.

Doveton SC, meanwhile, walked away with a 0-1 victory against Brandon Park SC after an incredible goal in the 80th minute by Shane Tagliaferro.

The Doves and Parkers certainly struggled to hit the scoreboard despite plenty of opportunities, with the visitors doing just enough to climb to the top of the table after a seriously impressive opening four matches.

STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Pakenham United enjoyed a terrific Friday night win at home against White Star Dandenong to get its season back on track.

Damian Bosnjak was the man, finding his second goal of the season in the 25th minute to get the home side off to a brilliant start.

The United men battled hard to defend grimly and held on for a terrific win.

Drouin Dragons also claimed a solid win, defeating Aspendale SC 2-1 at Bellbird Park, with a double to Chris Davies in the second half getting the job done.

In other matches, Old Mentonians won 3-1 against Somerville Eagles, Knox United was too strong in a 3-0 win over Casey Panthers, while Rowville went to town on Endeavour Hills in a monster 1-6 win.

Dees' fast start fades

By Hayley Wildes After coming out on fire, Casey was unable to maintain that ferocity for long enough as the Demons were overrun by Richmond at Punt Road Oval on Sunday.

After an eight-goal opening term, Casey were restricted just five goals for the rest of the game as Richmond lifted their defensive intensity.

In what was a beautiful day for footy, the Demons slammed on the first five goals of the game in just over 10 minutes of play.

With Casey possessing all the momentum, Cam Pedersen was dominating up forward, slotting three first quarter goals, whilst slick ball movement through the likes of Jay Kennedy-Harris and Oskar Baker allowed free flowing forward 50 entries.

Unfortunately, the Demons were unable to hold onto that momentum as the Tigers came storming back into the contest, cutting Casey's lead to just 11 points at quarter time in a manic 14-goal opening quarter.

Richmond took control of the game in the second quarter as the Tigers midfield got on top and their forwards reaped the rewards.

Shai Bolton was electric as the Tigers booted six goals to one in the term.

Trailing by 21 points at half time, James Munro, Charlie Spargo and Mitch Hannan got going as the Demons cut the deficit to just 14 points deep in the third quarter.

The Demons returned to their attacking mindset in that quarter and showed plenty of resolve to fight back after being challenged.

After a mountain of work, a late goal to Liam Baker saw the Demons' valiant third quarter efforts result in just a one-point improvement on the half time margin.

When Hannan goaled early in the final term to trim Richmond's lead to 15 points, the game seemed destined for a grandstand finish, but it wasn't to be.

Casey will rue missed opportunities as they had their chances to cut further into the lead, but were unable to convert when it mattered most.

Richmond made them pay.

Three goals in a row saw Richmond take total control of the game and eventually run out 17.19 (121) to 13.8 (86) winners.

Richmond's ability to win the ball at the coalface - Anthony Miles ran riot in the midfield - was too much for Casey to handle as Ivan Soldo (60 hit-outs) gave his Richmond midfielders every opportunity to get their hands on the ball first.

Tom Bugg may be set for a stint on the sidelines after coming off in the second quarter with a hip injury. Munro was best afield for Casey, leading the way with 17 possessions, whilst Pedersen was a constant threat up forward, booting five majors and further staking his claim for a senior re-call. After their first loss of the season, Casey will be looking to bounce back this week against Geelong at Casey Fields on Saturday night.

Nothing went to plan for Narre Warren's Pauline Kempf (pictured) in the final of the State Novice Ladies bowls singles at Bendigo East recently. A 'veteran' of 14 months bowling, she handled the situation up to the final with ease but found playing against Christine Vella from Deer Park that she struggled to handle everything from nerves, to the occasion and the opponent. Panthers hold off Roos

By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN ROUND 3 Down at Pearcedale, a fast starting Panthers got the chocolates over Langwarrin in a fascinating game of football.

The Panthers jumped out of the blocks to gain a 29 point quarter time advantage, but the Roos fought back hard, drawing the margin back to four points before the siren gave the home the much needed four points.

David Hussey, Luke Dalmau and Daniel Heijden were the stars for the Panthers in the 10.18 (78) to 11.8 (74) victory.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 3 The Doveton Eagles have continued their unbeaten start to life in Division 2 with a dominant win over Skye.

The Eagles jumped out a 36-point lead early, thanks to a seven goal to one first quarter.

From there, Doveton continued to pile on the pain as Nick Battle (three goals), Michael Callinan (two goals) and Nick Beer took over the game.

The Eagles claimed the win, 20.11 (131) to 7.7 (49).

Keysborough dispatched Clayton with ease, claiming a big win, 20.11 (131) to 11.6 (72).

Chris Bryan (six goals) and Matthew Carnelley (five goals) were dominant up forward, as Clayton were unable to find an answer for the dynamic duo.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 2 Hampton Park claimed a comprehensive 13.14 (92) win over Ashwood 5.7 (37). Leading from start to finish, Nathan Carver (five goals), Michael Henry (three goals) and Mitchell Woolgar led the Redbacks home.

Endeavour Hills celebrate a close win over Springvale Districts. 180054 Hallam 6.7 (43). Mitchell Lambert and Rory McIvor battled valiantly for the Hawks all day.

Endeavour Hills and Springvale Districts battled it out in a low-scoring affair. Endeavour Hills, led by Ben Moriarty and Byron Hoe, were able to overcome a slow start to claim a 5.9 (39) to 5.2 (32) win.

Springvale Districts' Lachlan Morrey (three goals) tried his best to get his team over the line, but it wasn't enough.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 3 Sandown were in trouble from the outset against Carrum Patterson Lakes.

Trailing 1.1 (7) to 6.3 (39) after one quarter, it only got worse from there for the Cobras.

Bradley Reiner (three goals) was best afield on a disappointing day for the Cobras.

Meanwhile, Lyndhurst won a tight battle against Frankston. After having the game in control for much of the day, the Lightning had to hold off a fast-finishing Dolphins side, eventually running out winners, 11.4 (70) to 9.7 (61).

Hamish Browning (three goals), Jarryd McGrath (two goals) and Jeremy Jakupi were pivotal in helping the Lighting claim the hardfought win.

Lyndale were far too strong for Dandenong at Greaves Reserve, despite a slow start.

A 10 goal to one second term saw the Pumas take control and they never looked back, claiming a 22.14 (146) to 10.4 (64) win.

Shane Thomas (seven goals) was brilliant for the Pumas, as were Jayden Denmead and Brenton Miles.

TAC CUP GIRLS - ROUND 6 The Dandenong Stingrays defence stood up all day against the Western Jets, propelling them to their maiden win in season 2018.

Brooke Vernon (one goal) and Tyanna Smith were dominant for the Rays as they took control of the match after quarter time to run away with the win, 9.14 (68) to 2.2 (14).

Junior stars The Stingrays continue their dominance set to shine

The most promising young talent in local football will be on full display at the AFL South East 2018 Regional Junior Championships.

Boys and girls from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues will converge on Beaconsfield, Frankston Park and Shepley Oval for the championships which run from 6 June to 11.

The championships consist of under 13 to 17s for boys and under 15 and 18s for girls.

The championships begin at Beaconsfield on Wednesday 6 June before Frankston Park and Shepley Oval share the spotlight on Saturday 9 June and Monday 11 June.

The Queen's Birthday carnival, an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays Pathway, has grown in significance over the years and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Club's Next Generation Academies (NGA).

AFLSE RGM John Anderson said the carnival had quickly developed a strong reputation for identifying the next wave of talent emerging through the junior system.

"The Regional Junior Championships have become a very important stepping stone in the pathway to higher honours, such as selection on AFL and AFLW lists, "Anderson said.

"The carnival atmosphere and high level of competition provide the perfect platform for our stars going forward."

This year's carnival is proudly supported by SEDA College, where Year 11 and 12 students complete their senior secondary education immersed in the sport industry.

The AFLSE Regional Junior Championships will also go hi-tech this year, with a digital record to provide information on fixtures, team lists, partner offers, frequently asked questions and welcome messages from relevant parties.

The Dandenong Stingrays sent a message to the rest of the competition with a dominant win over the Western Jets.

In what was the Rays' first home game of the season at Shepley Oval, they completely outplayed the Jets from start to finish. It was the Bailey Williams show up forward all day he was too big, too strong and just too good for the Jets' defenders, who were unable to find answers for him.

Williams finished with a bag of seven goals, and it could've been more as he missed a couple of gettable shots. His work in marking contests, coupled with his clean hands at ground level allows him to stay in the contest when other big forwards would struggle.

Furthermore, his ability to play both ruck and forward makes him a tantalising prospect for AFL clubs - who will continue to keep a very close eye on him all season long. With Williams dominating up forward, it was William Hamill who set up many attacking forays from halfback with his run and carry and sublime kicking. His work from half-back allowed to the likes of Lachlan McDonnell, Zac Foot (three goals) - who continues to impress this season - and Riley Bowman (three goals) to go to work higher up the ground.

While the game was all but over at half-time, with the Rays leading 11.7 (73) to 2.4 (16), Dandenong continued to put the foot down in the third quarter. Seven goals in the term stretched the lead out to 77 points, but the Rays weren't done just yet. They saved their best quarter of footy for the final term, slamming on eight goals and holding the Jets scoreless.

The final score of 26.11 (167) to 6.5 (41) highlighted just how dangerous the Rays are and there is no doubt that their depth will give all teams in the TAC Cup a run for their money.

With the win, the Rays are now the only undefeated team remaining in the competition at 4-0 and boast an incredible percentage of 271.

Looking ahead to Round 5, the Rays have set up a top of the table clash with the Oakleigh Chargers on Saturday afternoon at Warrawee Park.

This contest will be an absolute cracker and with the Chargers also coming off a massive win, both teams will be full of confidence and ready to put on a show.

Magpies are flying high

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 3 (SPLIT ROUND) After some questioned the credentials of Narre Warren and its ability to keep pace at the top of the SEFNL tree, Matt Shinners' exciting group has exceeded every challenge thrown at them in their opening three rounds.

Solid wins over Cranbourne and reigning premiers Berwick were mighty impressive, but Saturday's monstering of Beaconsfield was scarily good.

With some pressure on for both sides being the only game played over the weekend, and with the Anzac Day ceremony taking place with crowds flocking to get a good view, it was a blockbuster clash, and an important one too.

But even Shinners is somewhat surprised that his group has learnt the structures and implemented a shifting game style so swiftly.

"You always hope that things will play your way, I didn't expect to be sitting where we are, but in saying that, it comes down to the playing group, they've been engaging and embracing in what we've been trying to do," he said after his side made the Eagles look second rate by 72 points at Holm Park.

It was an interesting opening term to say the least, and it certainly didn't have signs that it was going to eventuate into a blowout.

Beaconsfield certainly had its share of the ball early, and was able to trap the ball inside their forward 50 despite being a little sloppy with ball in hand.

But things began to unravel as the Magpies stormed into the game, with their major ball winners - led by a tough, gritty opening term

by Brad Scalzo in the coalface - getting the ball moving forward.

A goal on the quarter time siren to Cory Machaya proved pivotal - it regained the lead for the visitors and undid a quarter of good work by Leigh McQuillen's side.

Shinners urged his side to stick to the process, be patient and wait for the right opportunity to attack during his quarter time address, and they certainly did, piling on six unanswered goals in a brilliant second term that saw them race out to a 37 point half time lead.

There were moments of utter class in that quarter - in the early stages of the second, a horror turnover, courtesy of some brilliant pressure, gave Scalzo the opening goal, and after Nick Scanlon slotted a major minutes later, Stew Scanlon galloped through the middle of Holm Park, bouncing the ball three times on the turf before slotting a brilliant goal from 50 out.

That moment was the beginning of the end, with the Magpies flicking the ball around with ease, drawing into the corridor with some terrific foot skills, and also winning the ball inside the contest.

With the sting well and truly taken out of the contest, the Eagles managed to put a few goals on the board through the third quarter to fight back hard, before a five goal final term sealed a 12 goal win.

The Magpies' dominance through the midfield - despite Scott Meyer's lionhearted effort in the ruck for the Eagles - gave the visitors' forwards plenty of opportunity, with 10 individual goalkickers, including three multiple goalkickers in Nick Scanlon (four), Stew Scanlon (three) and Aaron Wilson (two).

"It was pretty even in the first quarter, and we didn't start the way we were hoping to, they (Beaconsfield) were certainly up and about, and we didn't start well," Shinners said when reflecting on the game.

"We addressed a couple of things at quarter time, and had a chat in the first quarter to analyze and have a bit of a closer look at what was taking place.

"We shuffled things around, and we just ran really well, used the ball better - in the third quarter we should have put the game beyond doubt, and we missed probably four goals from 20 out, and then in the last quarter our ball movement was really good.

While there was strong performances from the likes of usual suspects Michael Collins, Jake Richardson, Col McNamara and skipper Dylan Quirk, it was Scalzo's game that caught the eye, with the returning Warragul star best afield in a game that certainly impressed his coach.

"When he first came back from Warragul, it's sort of see ball get ball for him, and we're trying to educate him that he doesn't need to do all that work, we've got good players that can share the footy with him," he said.

"He's full of guts and determination, he was under the packs all day - that's why we worked

hard to get him back, he won a league best and fairest in 2008 as a young kid, and the development from his side and his experience, is just so invaluable for us."

Another is former Dandenong Stingray and Frankston VFL listed player Jesse Davies, who shut forward Nathan Langley out of the game in another commanding performance that has seen him quickly emerge as one of the standout key defenders in the competition.

"During the practice matches, Jesse played centre half back because Jake Richardson wasn't available, and to be able to play him off a flank, and also in the ruck because he's got a terrific leap is a bonus," he said.

Both sides will earn a rest as the round continues into Saturday with Berwick and Doveton to clash, but Shinners' side will tackle an inform Officer at home on 5 May, while Beaconsfield will look to get its season back on track when they travel down to Tooradin to take on the Seagulls.

MAZDA FINE-TUNES ITS ALWAYS ICONIC MX-5

Retailer of the year Dealer Principal Craig Howard and his team from Mercedes-Benz Berwick have once again been recognised for their hard work and dedication by receiving the prestigious title of 2017 Retailer of the Year for the fourth time.

The dealership has won this award four times in the last five years.

"It is a great honour and privilege to win this award, and to see so many team members being recognised for achieving well deserved accolades and individual awards as well, this proves it really is a team effort and one I'm very proud of," Mr Howard said.

Ever restless in their search for perfection, the engineers at Mazda have given their ND series MX-5 roadster’s rear suspension some minor tweaks.

Using information from the development of the Retractable Fastback (RF) version of the MX-5, the soft-top’s rear suspension’s upper link bushings have been lowered and the rear bump stops lengthened. The aim of the latter was to bring the stops into play a little earlier.

It’s also there to give a slightly more comfortable ride, but obviously without in any way interfering with the MX-5’s exceptional road holding and feel.

Arguably the biggest news is that Mazda’s stunning colour, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, is now available on the MX-5.

Realising that - sadly - the MX-5 roadster is more likely to spend time in boring commuting than being fanged on interesting Sunday drives, in-cabin noise reduction has been improved. Sound insulation was installed over areas of the centre tunnel and gaps around the tunnel reinforcements were reduced. Finally vibration-damping materials were added to the rear wheel housings.

While the MX-5 already has a five-star ANCAP safety rating, the GT version gets the added safety features of Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Adaptive LED Headlamps (ALH).

Small changes like this indicate just how serious the guys and gals at Mazda are. Speaking purely selfishly they have also given us the opportunity to borrow a road test car and do some more fanging on nice Sunday roads and, we suppose, some boring commuting as well.
