Meanwhile, in total, 31 young Victorians - between the ages of four and 13 - were named Junior Triple Zero Heroes by the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA).

The awards, now in their 14th year, recognise young people for their bravery and clear thinking in emergencies.

In 2015, Montrose youngster Tiana Dewhurst, who was then also four years of age, was a recipient.

Tiana dialled triple zero after her mother hit her head and lost consciousness.

In 2017, Jamie Le Sueur, also from Montrose, was acknowledged after calling triple zero when his mother, Susan, began having a seizure.

27 days without an episode, during a health battle she has fought for the past three years.

She believes it stems back to a car crash in which she was involved in 2000.

Tracey had a hip replacement in 2001, then again in 2015.

She said since the 2015 replacement, she has endured her present health battles, from which she is still hoping to recover but has no clear answer on when or how.

Tracey chose not to attend the formal presentation of Charlotte's award, which she said "broke her heart".

"It was Charlotte's day and I wanted it to be all about her. I felt that if I'd attended, it would've put too much pressure on her and my family. I'm incredibly proud of her achievement."

Upwey's Charlotte Perry, 4, has become one of the youngest recipients of the coveted Junior Triple Zero Hero awards, an acknowledgement of her ability to stay calm and collected in a crisis.

Charlotte contacted triple zero when her mother, Tracey, fell unexpectedly and became pinned underneath a chair.

Tracey suffers from a chronic complex migraine condition, which causes her to lose consciousness without warning, leaving her susceptible to falls and potentially significant injuries.

Thankfully for the entire Perry family, young Charlotte, an Upwey Primary School student, was able to help out when needed.

Charlotte explained to the operator what was happening, in addition to caring for her mother until the paramedics arrived.

Tracey said she was in awe of her daughter's resilience and cool head.

"Because of my falls, my husband (Andrew) and I had spoken about what would happen if he wasn't around," she said.

"So, we tried to teach her as best we could.

But she really stepped up when we needed her.

If she hadn't have helped, I hate to think what may've happened.

"On that day, I didn't completely lose consciousness. But I brought down a chair with me and it had pinned me down. I've had hip replacements and couldn't move."

Tracey said her condition had been hard for the family, but Charlotte had been brave throughout.

"We've all heard about the dangers around one-punch attacks and that it can kill. In my case, it's similar, because it's the fall that can get you, too," she said.

"I can't warn anyone around me that it's going to happen, because I don't know when it will happen.

"It's not so scary for me, because I only know about it when I come to. But for those around me, it can be hugely scary, including for my daughter."

‘Mick’ much-loved In recent days, the family of Edward (Mick) Sherry have mourned the loss of a long-time resident of Cockatoo and Emerald.

Mick lived in this area for most of his 92 years.

He grew up in Cockatoo and went to Cockatoo Primary School when it was one small room in Ivy Street, and later to Upwey High School where he became House Captain of 'Crow'.

He played cricket, tennis and football; and was captain and coach of both Cockatoo and Gembrook football clubs.

He was to become the Rover of the Century for Gembrook (1906-2006).

He had various jobs before running a sawmill in Fielder.

However, many families, particularly in Gembrook, would remember him as the manager of Russell's Hay and Grain Store in the Main Street.

He worked there for many years before joining the Shire of Sherbrooke staff until he retired in 1990.

He lived with his wife, Margaret, in Emerald; in between travelling the length and breadth of Australia numerous times.

They were often seen on their daily walks around the township.

He loved the hills of home, and even when they travelled, always believed the best part was coming home.

He passed away peacefully on 11 April and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Mick.

Flash safety

By Peter Douglas The installation of flashing electronic speed signs at Kallista Primary School has received bipartisan support.

Monbulk candidate John Schurink this week confirmed the state Liberal Party would join Labor, if elected, in providing funds for the project, which aims to improve road safety for the school.

The announcement means that irrespective of who wins this year's state election, the school will receive the signs.

Mr Schurink said while it's one thing to have speed zones, restrictions need to be made clear for drivers.

"Although Kallista Primary is a small school, with enrolments of about 168 students, parents have become increasingly concerned about the high number of speed of vehicles passing within metres of the school," he said.

"Ensuring drivers know the 40km/h speed limit, although no guarantees, will give drivers and other children a better chance of seeing and avoiding each other, thereby reducing the risk to our children."

Mr Schurink said the installation of flashing school zone signs around schools has been roundly acclaimed by road safety experts and school communities as being very effective.

The candidate's comments come as incumbent Monbulk MP, James Merlino, confirmed the Victorian Government would take action, investing $80,000 to install four flashing electronic speed signs.

Earlier this month, a parent concerned for the lives of his children and other students at the school told the 'Mail' the installations were a must.

Jason Fox said, due to the location of the school, drivers weren't being made fully aware of the school zone restriction.

"People don't realise there's a school there," Mr Fox said.

"The school is close to Grant's (Picnic Ground) so you get tourists that don't know the roads and don't know that the school zone is there ... if the light is there, it'll help them see it."

Full steam ahead

By Peter Douglas This year's Great Train Race ambassador for 2018 Shane Smedley said he has used the popular fun run to inspire him during his ambition to lose weight.

The Monbulk fitness enthusiast, at his heaviest, weighed about 150kgs, before he started running, with the famed Puffing Billy run a goal that he had long-held in mind.

"I was about 150kgs and never thought I could run. I lost a lot of this and then started running," he said.

"My first run was a 4km fun run in Monbulk where I ran most, vomited on a hill and finished eventually.

"I then starting picking runs and putting stakes in the ground as goals. Puffing Billy was my longest run (at that time) in 2016.

"It was a goal for me as I live like steam and Puffing Billy is a local attraction. Being a local, it all made sense, so I trained hard to beat the train."

Shane has encouraged others to follow his lead and sign up for this year's event, no matter what their ambitions.

"It's one of my favourite races. It was such a huge goal for me to achieve in 2016 and now I use the course to train on," he said.

"Last year, I ran the race and then ran to Kallista as part of my training for longer runs."

With registrations now open, Shane will join over 3000 other runners on Sunday 29 April as they take to the Dandenong Ranges to race Puffing Billy to the finish-line, traversing one of the most unique courses on the Melbourne running circuit.

The Great Train Race is organised by Puffing Billy Preservation Society volunteers, with all proceeds and any additional donations going towards the Puffing Billy Menzies Creek Museum Redevelopment project.

Couple killed in hit, run The Basin community is in mourning after a recently married couple from the region died after a hit-and-run crash during the early hours of Thursday 19 April.

The couple from the Basin, Matt Goland, 38, and Bita Zaeim, 32, had only been married for 12 months.

A Boronia man, 19, and a Belgrave teenage girl, 15, allegedly stole a Lexus four-wheeldrive from a Lysterfield house.

They are alleged to have driven at high speeds, before running a red light and crashing into the couple's Holden Commodore in Wantirna South.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Stud and Boronia roads, shortly after 1am The pair had been chased from the scene of the crash by nearby security guards, but they were later arrested at a Belgrave home on Saturday 21 April about 1.15pm.

News of the crash has led to an outpouring of grief from family, friends and the nearby communities, with many paying their respects through visiting the crash site.

Emerald Library is pitching in to assist women and girls experiencing poverty or homelessness through helping to collect personal hygiene products.

As part of the bi-annual Share the Dignity Drive, a Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) initiative, the program aims to support the charity organisation Share the Dignity.

The drive will be held during April through to August.

IN BRIEF Monbulk Alpine Mowers Detectives at Yarra Ranges CIU have charged three people so far regarding burglaries and ram raids at Alpine Mowers, though are still seeking information to find other offenders.

Detectives report that so far a 27-year-old male and 25-year-old female from Cranbourne North have been charged with handling stolen goods in relation to a ram raid that occurred at Alpine Mowers in Monbulk on 20 March.

Both the male and female have been bailed and will appear at Dandenong Magistrates Court on 6 June.

This ram-raid is believed to have been the first incident at the Alpine Mowers and it has since been the target of a number of break-ins, pushing the owner Adam Robinn to employ a security guard to protect his business.

Though, on 12 April, it was broken into again.

Upwey skimming device A skimming device at the Bendigo bank ATM in Upwey has police urging residents to check

Between 6 and 7pm on 21 April a trailer containing assorted tools was stolen from an address in David Hill Road Monbulk.

The trailer contained assorted tools and was parked in the front of the driveway. Police said that unknown persons had unhooked the trailer from a vehicle and pushed it 15 metres to a waiting vehicle.

The trailer was located emptied in Gruyere.

Silvan burglary At 1.30am on 19 April a burglary was conducted at an address in Silvan, where unkown persons have driven onto a property and forced access to a work shed, where they have stolen a generator.

Police have located evidence at the scene and are reviewing CCTV images of the offence.

That would surely be the only justification for the addition of fluoride to the water supply.

My 22-year-old son has been raised here, gone to both primary and secondary school in the area, participated heavily in local basketball and football, and we have both been involved in many and varied social/community activities.

We cannot think of one instance when we though 'wow, that person's teeth are really bad, shame we don't have fluoride in the water?'.

He is yet to need a filling.

Maybe the rest of Melbourne would be better off 'falling in line' with our community.

Red Baron witness

By Peter Douglas While many incredible war-time stories surround the Yarra Ranges region, few tales may be more interesting than that of Private Dick Bowman of Monbulk (dec. 1899-1994).

On 21 April, 1918 - one century ago - Pvt Bowman laid a strong claim to witnessing one of the most historic events of World War I, the shooting down of the Red Baron.

On that particular day, it has been welldocumented the ace of aces, Manfred von Richthofen, had been pursuing an enemy plane near the Somme River, when Canadian Captain Roy Brown spotted the Red Baron and pursued. The German fighter ace, renowned for his bright red tri-planes, had fled and was flying low to the ground when a bullet pierced through his heart and lungs.

Von Richthofen landed roughly, right near where an Australian Imperial Force unit was located, but died soon after.

Apart from Captain Brown, many Australian soldiers present on that day claimed to have shot down the Red Baron, though no single person is credited with this historic moment.

Many theories have been put forward, among those including Australian Sgt Cedric Popkin, who many sources claim is the person most likely to have killed the Red Baron.

But, despite such debate, Pvt Bowman’s eyewitness account is made more legitimate because he never claimed to have caused the fatal wound.

Before Mr Bowman’s death in 1994, local historian Anthony McAleer, from Mount Evelyn RSL, was fortunate enough to speak with him.

In 1993, when Mr Bowman was aged 94, he relayed a vivid recollection to Mr McAleer: ‘One day I was on this machine gun, they used to put them on a post and they had a sight fixed on it, and this particular day it was a

dirty, wet day. Well, I don’t know how it flashed about but the next thing we were told the Red Baron was coming,’ he said.

‘The plane was flying low and I saw him, he looked wounded. I fired but it was hard to make out what a distance he was and I’d say a tenth of my bullets were wasted going up. I did see him crash. The funny thing is that there weren’t that many machine-gunners there but, since, I’ve heard so many that claimed to have been there.’ That same year, Mr Bowman travelled back to France as a guest of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

He visited the site where the Red Baron was shot down, but said it looked completely different and couldn’t recognise the area at all.

Meanwhile, Mr McAleer said this wasn’t the only local connection to the Red Baron.

He said the altimeter from the Red Baron’s plane had been sitting on the mantelpiece, for many years, of the Silvan home of Major Hastings A’Beckett.

Major A’Beckett had brought the piece home after the war, although no-one knows where it is today.

After the Red Baron’s heavy landing, it’s well-documented that many items from the plane were taken by soldiers as trophies.

Students at the ready It's almost NAPLAN time and as the community debate re-commences, students and teachers at Mater Christi College are at the ready.

Students nationwide in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will complete four tests covering reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy between 15 - 17 May. "It is important to understand the limitations of NAPLAN. It is only a snapshot assessment, but students can gain positive feedback on their progress in basic skills and they experience the rigour of taking a test and seeking to perform at their best," said Marlo VanderZalm,

NAPLAN aims to measure educational outcomes and create data for parents, schools and government policy makers but there are many other important attributes that standardised tests cannot assess, suggests Ms VanderZalm.

Put tests into perspective In May this year, over one million students from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will participate in an assessment of their literacy and numeracy skills.

According to the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) As with any test in life - whether academic, sport or hobby-related - some students may feel anxious about NAPLAN. In these cases, it is up to the adults in students' lives to help explain what NAPLAN is all about and keep it in perspective.

For students, NAPLAN is a short assessment they take only four times during their

school life, which checks what they normally learn in the classroom every day.

For parents, NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment for seeing how their child, compared with the rest of Australia's children, is progressing the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy.

The information NAPLAN provides supports conversations between parents, teachers and schools working together to help children achieve their full potential.

Calling all ‘Ruff Mudders’

By Derek Schlennstedt Animal Aid is welcoming dog lovers and their canine pals to take part in 'Adventure Dog, a Cross Country Challenge', which will help raise funds to care for the animals at Animal Aid. On Sunday 27 May, at the picturesque Wandin Park Equestrian Centre, participants will be mentally and physically challenged by 25 obstacles spread over almost 4km.

A dog's dream come true, the event is perfect for those particular pups which love getting out and about, leaping and bounding, and wading through water and muddy meadows.

Mark Menze, Animal Aid chief executive officer, said the event would be reminiscent of the popular Tough Mudder, "but ruffer".

"Picture Tough Mudder with your dog," Mr Menze said..

"You will venture over the hills, under the logs, through the mud, you will enter the bush and into the water."

Friends and family are welcome to come along on the day to give their support.

There will be plenty of activities to keep them busy once they've you hit the course.

You can also involve your family and enter a team, which is a maximum of four people and a minimum of one dog per team.

After completing the challenge, you and your four-legged friend can refuel the tank, with plenty of food and drink on offer in the event village.

Participants must register via our Go Fundraise page before 13 May. Human entrants must be aged 16 or over (consent form signed by legal guardian for those under 18).

Surprise results first-up

By Cameron Hutchison Round 1 of AFL Yarra Ranges action kicked off in if the fog, but all were blessed with bright sunshine come senior kick-off.

Division 1 saw Belgrave unfurl their Division 2 Flag; the Professionals Cup was hosted

by Mt Evelyn while Yarra Junction played Powelltown in their local rivalry clash.

Some surprise results and some good football and netball was witnessed by club's supporters and the community.

The winners in senior football: UpweyTecoma, Emerald, Olinda Ferny Creek, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Yea, Seville, Kinglake and Yarra Junction.

A Grade netball winners: Belgrave, Olinda Ferny Creek, Healesville and Emerald had a draw, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Seville, Kinglake, Yarra Junction and Yea. Division 1 Seniors Football Upwey Tecoma 20.15.135 d Belgrave 7.12.54 Belgrave unfurled their 2017 Division 2 Flag but unfortunately for them that was where the joy ended. Upwey-Tecoma put on a stellar performance to welcome them back into Division 1. The first quarter was an even affair with only seven points the margin in Upwey's favour. Upwey put on a bit of a clinic in the second, holding Belgrave scoreless while they piled on 6.6 to make the margin a formidable 48 points at halftime. Belgrave rallied somewhat in the third, but Upwey still managed to increase their lead at the final margin to 57 points. The final quarter was all Upwey, kicking 6 goals to 2.

Emerald 19.8.122 d Healesville 14.10.94 Emerald travelled to Healesville and gave Healesville a bit of a surprise touch-up. Healesville got a slight lead in the first and were six points in front. Emerald turned that around in the second and were never headed from there. They piled on seven straight to Healesville's 2.3 and went into the long break with a 21-point lead. Healesville fought back in the third, kicking 7 goals to 6 which was an entertaining quarter for spectators but they could not bridge the gap going into the last giving Emerald an 11-point lead. The last quarter was tight but Emerald outscored Healesville by 2.5 to 2 goals and came away with a good firstround win.

Olinda again were wasteful in front of goals in the third, which plagued them a bit last year, but they were solid in defence not allowing Monbulk to kick any majors. Their lead had increased to 30 points at the final change and they looked home and hosed. The final margin could have been a lot more but another wasteful quarter still saw them kick 3.5 but Monbulk could only kick one behind.

Thornton bounced back in the second, kicking four straight to 2.6 and outscored Kinglake in the second. Kinglake rectified that in the third, not allowing Thornton to worry the scorers but kicked seven goals themselves to increase their lead to 81 points at the final change. It was a hard day at the office for Thornton going down by 135 points at the final siren.

Powelltown came back at them in the second with four goals to Yarra Junction's wasteful 2.7 but they were still behind by 17 points at half-time. A huge 10goal quarter by the Eagles to Powelltown's two changed the flavour of the game as Junction had a lead of 64 points at three-quarter time. It was low scoring in the last as both sides were spent but Yarra junction comfortably came away with four points to start their season.

Monbulk juniors shine

Monbulk Rangers Outlaws striker Marc Mirafuentes shapes up for a goal to seal his side's 4-0 win over Mount Waverley in the FFV U14s competition at the Monbulk Regional Soccer Facility. 180108

New season kicks off Monbulk Rangers teams kicked off the season proper with a raft of victories in both the FFV and Churches league on the weekend.

The Women's Firsts fought a tough contest against Sandringham with a goalless first half before Gabby Simpson kicked two and Mikayla Newman one in the second half to finish 3-0. The Reserves held Sandringham to a

3-3 draw. At home, MRSC Mens notched up another 3 points on the ladder after goals to Steve McCrae and Arash Sadeghi sealed the game 2-0 against South Yarra. Around 350 Monbulk Rangers juniors played in the Victorian Churches Football Association league on Saturday.

Monbulk Junior Football Club travelled to Olinda, Seville and Yarra Glen for this week's away games to face some strong opponents.

In perfect conditions, all players were in great spirits as they ran out onto the field to play their best footy.

Under 9s A great day out for the team. Plenty of long kicks and strong marks.

The new players are starting to get included and are contributing well. They were very courageous against a tough team.

The new HiLux models are packed with features.

HiLux: rugged new look "Designed and developed over a three-year vehicle program, all the new components on these stunning HiLux models are fully integrated and engineered into the core vehicle and covered by the standard factory warranty.

"The Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged are not accessorised special editions, they are fully fledged new HiLux models that our customers demanded and we can be justifiably proud that they were designed and developed here in Australia," he said.

With its off-road focus, the Rugged X builds on the SR5 on which it is based with a host of protective, functional and recovery features.

At the front, the wince-compatible, heavyduty steel front bat, with integrated bash plate, LED lightbar and driving lights provides effective off-road protection and, together with the new design grille, gives the Rugged X a striking and tough aesthetic.

Further protective and recovery features include a snorkel, purposeful side rock rails that are able to support a fully laden vehicle, front and rear recovery points and a new heavy-duty steel rear bar and integrated tow bar.

The rear tub of the Rugged X has also been designed for functionality with a new steel

sports bar that can support a vertical load of 75kg and, with multiple tiedown points, secure up to 200kg on the floor of the tub.

Inside, the new Rugged X delivers all the comfort and style of a premium double cab ute, including leather-accented seats.

A new design instrument cluster, metallic black ornamentation and black headlining complete the interior design theme.

The new HiLux Rogue has been designed with a more urban adventurer customer in mind and features redesigned from and rear ends that reflect Toyota's global truck design DNA. Designed in Australia, and developed in conjunction with the Toyota engineering team in Thailand, the HiLux Rogue is a stylish premium HiLux model that will be sold in markets around the world.

The new, more vertical front-end and outboard driving lights give the vehicle a strong, assertive appearance that is complemented by clean lines and a near rear bumper - all with a contemporary black and grey colour palette.

The tub also gains the same practical and stylish sports bar as all the new HiLux models,

along with a bespoke tonneau cover for added protection and security.

As a premium model, the Rogue also gains the same interior features and trim as the Rugged X. The new Rugged model is based on the HiLux SR and is aimed at customers who want the extra functionality and features of the Rugged X but with the protection offered by a traditional steel bulbar.

Like the Rugged X, the Rugged also features a snorkel, redesigned grille, side rock rails, sports bar and heavy-duty steel rear bar, together recovery points.

All three new HiLux models share the same mechanical specifications as the SR5 or SR models on which they are based and are powered by a proven, strong and efficient 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine.

Driving through a part-time, shift-on-thefly 4x4 system with a full set of low-range ratios, the engine generates maximum power of 130kW and 450Nm of torque with optional sixspeed automatic transmission or 420Nm when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox.

Toyota has given its HiLux a serious dose of style, refinement and rugged off-road prowess with the launch of the new 4x4 double cab Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged models.

The three new hero models of Australia's best-selling vehicle have been designed and developed in Australia with support from Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan and Toyota in Thailand.

Toyota Australia's vice president sales and marketing, Sean Hanley, said the three new halo models have been designed to meet the demands of Australian customers and conditions and build on the 'Unbreakable' reputation of HiLux.
