The cross country challenge on Sunday, 27 May, will see dogs and their human companions like Lorraine O'Connell and Nemo (pictured) tackling 25 obstacles spread over a 4-kilometre course at Wandin Park Equestrian Centre as a fundraiser. It’s back to court By Kath Gannaway VicForests and environment group Friends of Leadbeater's Possum (FLBP) will be back in court in May following new allegations of non-compliance by the state-owned timber company. The new claims follow a decision by the Federal Court on Friday, 20 April, that an amended statement of claims should be heard after the parties, and the state and federal governments, failed to reach agreement on the case before the court. A stay on the logging of more than 30 areas that FLBP say are home to the possum and to Greater Gliders, and agreed to by VicForests last year, has now lapsed. VicForests in a statement released on Friday said they will defend the new claim.
Danya Jacobs, lawyer from Environmental Justice Australia acting on behalf of FLBP, confirmed EJA have filed an amended statement of claim and said they will also be seeking an interim injunction to halt logging in the affected areas. The case will test allegations that VicForests failed to identify and protect Leadbeater's Possums, Greater Gliders and their habitat in accordance with the Central Highlands Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs). The new claims include allegations that VicForests did not conduct detection activities or surveys for Greater Gliders in areas that have already been logged, and is not protecting the species in more than 30 planned coupes. Referring to a Federal Court finding in March that non-compliance of the RFA did not remove the logging industry's exemption
from Federal environment protection law, Ms Jacobs said it was precisely that type of noncompliance that FLBP is alleging. Addressing the recent announcement by the federal and state governments that extends three of the state's RFAs for two years, bringing them into line with others that expire in 2020, Steve Meacher, President of FLBP, said if logging continued in the Central Highlands forests, the extinction of the possum would be even harder to avoid. "The government recently announced an extension to the Central Highlands RFA designed to lock in another two years of logging our critically endangered possum's habitat - despite non-compliance with rules that are meant to protect threatened species," Mr Meacher said. He added "If the government won't act to
protect the state's faunal emblem, we will." VicForests said the orders issued by the Federal Court on Friday reject the basis of the claim brought by FLBP. "The initial hearing found VicForests operations were not affected by government-togovernment delays in reviewing the Central Highlands Regional Forest Agreement (RFA)," VicForests CEO Nathan Trushell said. He said FLBP had amended their Statement of Claim to allege that VicForests operations in a number of coupes were not being conducted in accordance with the Central Highlands RFA because they have not complied with the state-based regulatory regime. "We are confident our operations comply with the State regulations and will be defending this new claim," Mr Thrushell said.

Wild success

By Wendy Williamson An era has ended with the closure of Healesville’s iconic Judith Eardley Save Wildlife Centre. For over 17 years the centre has been a beacon for bargain hunters. Shoppers have thrilled to the search for treasures among the books and bric-a-brac of what is possibly the planet’s only wildlife charity shop. In doing so they have helped raise millions of dollars to protect wildlife. Peter Hannaford established the Judith Eardley Save Wildlife Association (JESWA) in 2000 in the name of his wildlife-loving late partner. In the 17 years since, this charitable trust has enjoyed what could only be described as wild success. “We began with the aim of raising money to purchase a wildlife reserve,” explained Peter. “That mission was quickly accomplished, but we got such good support from the community we decided to keep going.” He noted that over the years the band of no more than about 10 volunteers had bought more reserves for wildlife than has the state government. “Most of our volunteers have stayed with us for many years. They are very loyal, enthusiastic and, of necessity, good humoured! We couldn’t have done it without them,” he said. “We have also had lots of support from the community.” Much of the money raised by the centre has gone towards the purchase of land for wildlife, but some very different conservation projects have also benefited. “We organised a fundraiser through three local primary schools and raised enough money to purchase three Moon bears from farmers in Asia. They were destined to be cruelly harvested for their bile. Our funding allowed them to live in sanctuaries instead,” said Peter. “Retrospectively, if that was all we did the whole operation would have been worthwhile.”

It helped fund early work on conserving the tree kangaroo in Papua New Guinea. The first funds raised by JESWA allowed Bush Heritage Australia to purchase what became the Judith Eardley Save Wildlife Reserve in north central Victoria. In its final purchase of land in the Yarra Valley, JESWA donated $500,000 so that the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater could extend the Yellingbo Reserve, which itself was bought with the help of JESWA funding. The property was officially named the Jeanne Wilcox Reserve in December 2017, af-
ter one of the most dedicated volunteers of all, who passed away last year. Jeanne became involved with JESWA about two years after it began. “Apart from being a good businesswoman, she had such a lovely presence the shop went up an octave,” said Peter. Now Jeanne has gone, Peter is not getting any younger and it is time for change. 193 Maroondah Highway, home of the wildlife-saving centre for so many years, has been sold and Peter and the JEWSA volunteers have been winding down over the past few months in what was has been a mammoth effort to clear the thousands of books and other items that made the shop such a drawcard. Enlightening workshop By Wendy Williamson If Healesville CoRE has its way, one day Healesville will be a Net Zero Town - one which creates its own energy supply from renewable energy. Leo de Jong from the volunteer community energy group explained, "Our aim is to get Healesville more or less off the grid." Since it fired up about a year ago, Healesville CoRE has regularly held events to familiarise the community with aspects of solar energy. Coming up on Saturday 28 April is a free information session on solar energy equipment and installation. The workshop promises to be well worth attending by householders considering a move to solar energy. Samples of solar panels, inverters and batteries will be on display. Experts will provide information on how
to purchase and install these systems, set up costs, cost savings and finance, and technical information about how the equipment works. CoRE member and solar electricity production and storage specialist Glen Morris will talk about technical issues. The manager of the Healesville Community Bank will discuss financing the purchase of solar equipment. Yarra Ranges Council is developing a bulk buy of solar equipment with the support of Healesville CoRE. Julian Guess from the council will field questions about this exciting development. Monash University research student Nicholas Seymour will speak about three domestic dwellings in Healesville which are getting free energy audits and what can be done to save energy. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a meteor. A strange object lit up the skies over Melbourne's Outer East over the weekend, causing concerned residents in the Upper Yarra area to ring Emergency Services. A number of residents reported hearing a helicopter and sirens, after it is believed locals reported seeing a bright object falling from the skies at about 8:42pm on Sunday 22 April. Upper Yarra SES confirmed that they received an incident call-out to an aircraft accident, though said it was a false alarm. However it is now believed the false alarm was a result of a meteorite streaking across the sky, Taking to the Facebook noticeboards plenty of residents spoke of seeing a flash of light fly the sky over the Yarra valley. In Yarra Ranges Noticeboard witness Roberta Laban said she saw the supposed meteorite. "I saw a really bright meteorite with a long double tail from Coles carpark in Healesville at about 8:45 ... since then a couple of smaller ones. Surely its part of the Lyrid shower," Roberta said. Another witness Matt Wallis said he saw it in Lilydale. "I'm in Lilydale and saw it ... it was 8:32 lit up the sky with quite a long tail." The spectacle and resulting false alarm also coincides with the dazzling Lyrid meteor shower, which occurs between April 16 and 25 each year when the Earth passes through the tail of a comet.
Badger Creek Arrest A 44 year-old male was arrested in Badger Creek on Wednesday 11 April and processed for multiple counts of theft, burglary and theft of petrol drive-offs. These offences occurred in a period of time between February and April and were undertaken in the Healesville and Badger Creek areas. The man has been charged and bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates Court at a later date. Police said that number of items of property which were originally stolen has since been recovered.

Between 6 and 7pm on 21 April a trailer containing assorted tools was stolen from an address in David Hill Road Monbulk. The trailer contained assorted tools and was parked in the front of the driveway. Police said that unknown persons had unhooked the trailer from a vehicle and pushed it 15 metres to a waiting vehicle. The trailer was located emptied in Gruyere. Kicking off with pride By Wendy Williamson Yarra Glen Recreation Reserve will erupt in an explosion of colour during this year's Pride Cup on Saturday 28 April. The goal posts will be wrapped in rainbow colours and the 50m arc will be painted in the same bright colours. The players will sport the colours of the rainbow, too. The Pride Cup's message of support for diversity and inclusion in sport for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) communities has spread exponentially in a few short years. There are now nine Pride Cups across Victoria, but Yarra Glen is where it all began, and a newly painted mural celebrates this. Yarra Glen Football Netball Club treasurer, David Ball, met the 'Mail' in downtown Yarra Glen on Friday 20 April to show off the eyecatching mural on the wall of the post office. "Australia Post has been very supportive," Mr Ball said. Painted by Healesville artist and graphic designer Paul Sonsie, the mural consists of wings in rainbow colours with a football soaring high above. "The rainbow wings are spreading the message of inclusiveness," Mr Ball said. Paul is no footballer, but he said he was delighted to be able to make his contribution to the Pride Cup as an artist. "Having this mural in the centre of town is a great opportunity for the community to connect with the Pride Cup's message of inclusiveness," he said. The football and netball will run all day from 10am on April 28, with Yarra Glen hosting Alexandra. At this celebration of inclusiveness and diversity there will also be face painting for kids, broadcasts from JOY 949 and Yarra Valley FM,

Yarra Ranges mayor/Walling Ward Burning off is an important way of reducing excess vegetation ahead of the fire season, and one that many residents use to keep their
property and their community safe. When we draft our laws about burning off, we need to balance the need to burn for fire prevention purposes against the need to protect the health of our community and minimise smoke hazards. We recently put out our new Draft Open Air Burning Local Law for consultation with the community, as our current law finishes later this year. There have been a range of opinions coming in as a result, where people have taken the time to think about how the law could affect them, and they've let us know what they like and don't like in the proposal. heading to Yarra Glen that continually blocks up and floods across the road, making it a very dangerous hazard as it is on a bend and it is not unusual to see six inches of water across the road. Having watched a full clean out of the drains along that road, and we are expecting more major road works in the next month, one would think the technology would be applied to that particular drain to ensure future road safety as it is again blocked up after a heavy downpour last Saturday 14 April; and to this date, 19 April, the drain has not been cleaned out. Calling all ‘Ruff Mudders’ By Derek Schlennstedt Animal Aid is welcoming dog lovers and their canine pals to take part in 'Adventure Dog, a Cross Country Challenge', which will help raise funds to care for the animals at Animal Aid. On Sunday 27 May, at the picturesque Wandin Park Equestrian Centre, participants will be mentally and physically challenged by 25 obstacles spread over almost 4km. A dog's dream come true, the event is perfect for those particular pups which love getting out and about, leaping and bounding, and wading through water and muddy meadows. Mark Menze, Animal Aid chief executive officer, said the event would be reminiscent of the popular Tough Mudder, "but ruffer". "Picture Tough Mudder with your dog," Mr Menze said.. "You will venture over the hills, under the logs, through the mud, you will enter the bush and into the water." Friends and family are welcome to come along on the day to give their support. There will be plenty of activities to keep them busy once they've you hit the course. You can also involve your family and enter a team, which is a maximum of four people and a minimum of one dog per team. After completing the challenge, you and your four-legged friend can refuel the tank, with plenty of food and drink on offer in the event village. Participants must register via our Go Fundraise page before 13 May. Human entrants must be aged 16 or over (consent form signed by legal guardian for those under 18). Dog entrants must be aged one year or over on event day. All the money raised goes to Animal Aid, with individuals who raise enough money and

The whirr of sewing machines and overlockers is a pretty even match for the chatter that comes from the loft where the women of Wandin's Inner Wheel Club do their bit as part of a menstrual movement called Days For Girls. Inner Wheel is aligned with the Rotary Club of Wandin. The team of six is part of a larger pool of volunteers who meet regularly to put together colourful and functional menstrual health kits for girls in countries where managing the monthly cycle is not only a personal hygiene issue, but an impediment to education and opportunity. The international movement, now active throughout Australia, began in 2008 in Kenya when its founder, Celeste Mergens, identified the debilitating impact that not having access to the most basic feminine hygiene products was having on girls in a local orphanage. She learned that girls were sitting on cardboard for several days each month, often going without food unless it was brought to them. In other parts of the world, girls and women resort to whatever is available to manage their menstruation. Their resourcefulness is admirable and amazing! Disposable pads proved unsustainable so the first safe, washable and long-lasting alternatives were designed and made under the Days for Girls banner. Lorena Hayes who leads the team said the design had changed over time to meet individual cultural and environmental conditions in communities in different parts of the world. The huge difference that having practical and accessible hygiene solutions is making in breaking the cycle of poverty and assisting girls and women to live their lives with dignity is one of the drivers behind the success of the movement. With an eye on victory at the next state election, the Opposition is promising to install 40km/h electronic speed signs outside two local primary schools. Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish MP visited Wesburn Primary on Wednesday 18 April and Woori Yallock Primary on Thursday 19 April to make the announcement. She said the Opposition would honour its commitment should it win government. "A Liberal Nationals Government will ensure our kids are safe and will make sure there is no confusion for motorists with the installation of new electronic speed signs," Ms McLeish said. Welcoming the promise, Wesburn PS principal Anne Stenhouse said measures to improve the safety of children on the busy Warburton Highway outside the school were long overdue. She said she had witnessed some near misses on the road. "The school has been trying for years to get some sort of signage to support the safety of children crossing the road," she said. "This is the first promise we've ever received that someone will act." Principal Oliver Thockloth said Woori Yallock Primary had attempted in vain to get road safety improvements for as long as he had been principal - seven years. During this time the school population has increased - and so has traffic. "We are very pleased with this announcement," he said. "What we really want is for our kids to be safe." On her visit to Woori Yallock Ms McLeish was accompanied by Shadow Minister for Education Tim Smith. He said the announcement was in line with the Liberal Nationals' commitment to improving safety at all schools across Victoria.

John Halls remembered By Kath Gannaway The tragic death of John Halls as the result of a crash on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road in the early hours of 10 March came as a bolt out of the blue. The devoted family man, SES volunteer and local RACV patrolman, at 66, was one of those people who it seemed was always there ... would always be there. That sense of disbelief and sadness was reflected in tributes delivered at a farewell service in Woori Yallock on 23 March, but in equal measure were the touching and funny anecdotes of life with John, recognition of his unfaltering devotion to his family and friends, and his dedication to his community and colleagues. Born at Warburton Hospital on 6 October, 1951, John was the fifth of Hec and Ivy Halls six children, Carol, Pamella, Elva, Sandra and Ray, now deceased. The family lived on a five-acre property in Wesburn and it's fair to say they were your typical Aussie battlers. From a very young age, he helped around the farm, including driving tractors and developing the strong work ethic that became part of his DNA. From Upper Yarra High School he took on a motor mechanic apprenticeship, first with Matty Kirkpatrick in Woori Yallock, then at Fox's Garage in Warburton. Fishing with mates and family was great fun, but motor racing was his passion. He loved driving, and he loved even more driving to Bathurst with Ray to see the greats on the track, and stock car racing at Alexandra. Cars, footy - he was a Western Bulldogs fan through and through - country and western music, being a bit of a larrikin and just making people happy, he loved it all, but above everything, he loved his family. He was 18 years old when he first laid eyes on 16-year-old Glenys Andrews. He knew she was the one, and said so to his mates. They married on 2 January, 1971 and in every
way were soul mates, devoted to each other, and proud parents to Lisa, Donna and Darren. The family spoke of the unique relationship each of them had with 'the man' in their lives. Sharing stories of hard times and good times, family holidays, camping, his jokes, his genuine approach to people and his joy as a doting 'Pa' to six beautiful grandchildren. "He was the most hard-working man, and generous. He would give you his last dollar ... the shirt off his back. Dad died doing what he loved," he said. John's niece, Trish Halls, spoke of her uncle's pride in exploring his Aboriginal ancestry as a Yorta Yorta man and friends spoke of his generosity and loyalty, someone who loved people and who could be mischievous. In 2007, John joined Upper Yarra SES. In his work as a mobile mechanic and with the RACV, and his role with the SES, he was recognised as someone who went beyond the call. Jule Syme spoke on behalf of the SES saying he was an active member in all aspects. His knowledge of vehicles was especially an asset in road rescue. "John was no ordinary member, he would always put his hand up to help. He was always in the thick of things." She said in his role as OH&S safety rep he constantly looked at better ways to keep his colleagues safe. During the 2009 bushfires when Wesburn oval was awash with emergency vehicles, she said John volunteered his time working through the night on the vehicles. He received the National Emergency Medal for his work during the fires. His SES colleagues were joined by CFA, Police and Ambulance members to form a guard of honour, and six SES vehicles led the way to Lilydale Memorial Park for a final farewell. John Halls is survived by his wife Glenys, children Lisa, Donna and Darren and their families, including grandchildren Kyle, Tyler, Archer, Caiden, Madison and Lilah-Rose.

Tough story of inspiration By Derek Schlennstedt Daniel Tobias grew up in a Jewish-atheist household. In 2004, he found out he had stage-four testicular cancer and went searching for God. Any God. Enter Lance Armstrong, seven-time winner of the Tour de France and legendary cancer survivor. Reflecting on Daniel's real life experiences, The Orchid and The Crow is a solo performance: part storytelling, part cabaret, part theatre, featuring original songs from the award-winning writers of Die Roten Punkte. Segueing between rock, pop, and contemporary opera, Daniel effortlessly draws the audience into the inspiring tale of his almostdeath experience, and despite its macabre topic, manages to keep them in hysterics. "In 2004 I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and I had to go through treatment so I was looking for some kind of way to get through it and someone handed me Lance Armstrong's book ... it wasn't about the bike,"
he joked. "So it started off me writing a show about my experience with cancer but it really became a show about faith, because without his book I don't know how I would've gotten through it." The tragicomedy aptly called the Orchid and the Crow named after the Greek name for testicle, because of the shape of the orchid plant's bulb, and the symbol of death in many cultures — picks like a magpie from every musical genre with Daniel performing a range of hilarious original songs. "There's I think seven original songs in there, and some of it is like 90s indie rock, there's also more cabaret theatre style songs some mellow acoustic and even an aria in Italian," he said. "My aim was to create a show that was a really fun night out, the last thing I would want to do, is sit in a dark room and listen to a really sad story." Orchid and the Crow will play at Burrinja on 27 April at 8pm, the Warburton Arts Centre on 28 April at 7:30pm, and Montrose Town Centre at 8pm.

Directed by Rosie Jones, The Family tells the true story of yoga instructor and cult leader Anne Hamilton-Byrne and the people she abused. As the self-styled messianic leader of The Family, which operated primarily near Lake Eildon from the 1960s to the early 1990s, Hamilton-Byrne raised as many as 28 children, many acquired illegally, as her own. Interviews with these now-adult children are interspersed throughout the film, and these individuals emanate heartbreaking inmailcommunity.com.au

The documentary's various narrative threads develop smoothly (after some clunky pacing at the start), and dovetail together in a satisfying - if harrowing - way in the climax. The Family is a focused, well-produced documentary about a disturbing chapter of history unnervingly close to home.
Waterwheel the hub of art Warburton's Waterwheel Gallery is bursting with colour this autumn with Andrew How's 'Shapes of Colours' exhibition currently on show. The exhibition, Andrew's first since discovering his passion in oils two years ago, is on show until 2 May. Effloresce' a combined exhibition by Elfian Walpole and Linden Hatherall will follow from 3 May to 23 May. Effloresce means to reach an optimum stage of development, to burst forth as if in flower with the exhibition reflecting on modern-day consumerism. Featuring mystical night flower sculptures of exotic botanical ambience created from discarded plastic bottles and a forest of columns standing like tree trunks, employing recycled wood and steel it is a response to the wastefulness of consumerism and emptiness of spirit. In the true spirit of recycling, the Ecotopia Recycled Fashion Parade is back ... take 2! The parade, a popular drawcard to the annual Ecotopia Festival, fell prey to an ill-wind last month when the festival was cancelled due to a battering which left many of the festival marquees in tatters. Embracing the "it's an ill-wind" philosophy, not to mention the "the show must go on" philosophy, the organisers, Yarra Valley Ecoss, are running the fashion parade as a community fundraiser at Ecoss in Wesburn on Sunday, 29 April. Surprise results first-up By Cameron Hutchison Round 1 of AFL Yarra Ranges action kicked off in if the fog, but all were blessed with bright sunshine come senior kick-off. Division 1 saw Belgrave unfurl their Division 2 Flag; the Professionals Cup was hosted by Mt Evelyn while Yarra Junction played Powelltown in their local rivalry clash. Some surprise results and some good football and netball was witnessed by club's supporters and the community. The winners in senior football: UpweyTecoma, Emerald, Olinda Ferny Creek, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Yea, Seville, Kinglake and Yarra Junction. A Grade netball winners: Belgrave, Olinda Ferny Creek, Healesville and Emerald had a draw, Woori Yallock, Wandin, Seville, Kinglake, Yarra Junction and Yea. Division 1 Seniors Football Upwey Tecoma 20.15.135 d Belgrave 7.12.54 Belgrave unfurled their 2017 Division 2 Flag but unfortunately for them that was where the joy ended. Upwey-Tecoma put on a stellar performance to welcome them back into Division 1. The first quarter was an even affair with only seven points the margin in Upwey's favour. Upwey put on a bit of a clinic in the second, holding Belgrave scoreless while they piled on 6.6 to make the margin a formidable 48 points at half-time. Belgrave rallied somewhat in the third, but Upwey still managed to increase their lead at the final margin to 57 points. The final quarter was all Upwey, kicking 6 goals to 2. Upwey Tecoma Best: D. Emerald turned that around in the second and were never headed from there. They piled on seven straight to Healesville's 2.3 and went into the long break with a 21-point lead. Healesville fought back in the third, kicking 7 goals to 6 which was an entertaining quarter for spectators but they could not bridge the gap going into the last giving Emerald an 11-point lead. The game started slowly and Warburton even though they could not manage a score in the first were still in it due to Woori Yallock wasted opportunities in front of goal by kicking 2.8. Woori Yallock straightened up in the second, kicking 4.4 while Warburton kicked 2.1. The lead was 35 points at half-time. Woori Yallock really put the foot down in the third, kicking 7.10 to 1 straight to hold an insurmountable lead of 81 points at three-quarter time. Memorial shoot a success By John Wood Cool but sunny, a great day for the Peter Streuber 100 target Memorial Trophy shoot at the Woods Point Gun Club. Peter, of Dayton Ohio USA, became a sponsor of the club after meeting Rob Kirley at the Grand National Championships in America in 2004. He was a talented and successful shooter and held many clay target shooting awards and titles. In December 2017 Peter passed away so this shoot was to celebrate his generosity to our club and commemorate his memory. A large attendance, including six shooters from the Korumburra Gun Club, meant that it was going to be difficult to complete the shoot before light failed later in the day. But! With a 9.30am start and excellent support from the members of the club, the committee and the visitors, the club completed a successful day by 5.30pm. The 10 target Double Barrel Eye Opener saw Daryl Ewert, Rob Kirley and Phillip Desmond, all 30/30, share the cash Prize in AA Grade. A Grade was successful for Phillip Woods and Allan Kidd, 29/30. Steven Bedggood took the B Grade cash, 27/30, with Kirsten Chinn winning C Grade, 26/30. The 100 target Double Barrel Peter Streuber Memorial Trophy, sponsored by Rob Kirley and Eddy and Roz Woods was shot over two rounds of 50 targets each. The weather was still all day but with shadows on the left side of the range making perfect scores difficult. After the first 50 targets, Kirley was in the lead with the only 50/50. Darren Clark, Allan Kidd, Eddy Woods and David Frazer returned 47/50 it but would need a major collapse of the front runners to be in the hunt for the trophy. The second 50 targets, the business end of the event, saw Desmond, Kirley and Peter Lang with the best scores of 48/50 with Reed 47/50, Andrew Estcourt, Rowan Foote and Daniel Chinn returning 47/50 as well. But it was a clear win for Rob Kirley to hold the Memorial Trophy aloft with a final score of
98/100: A well-deserved and hard-fought win. In the Grades, Kirley won the AA Grade prize 98/100, Desmond 2nd, 97/100. A short shoot off between Andrew Estcourt and Foote resulted in Foote winning A Grade, 98/106 from Estcourt, 97/106. Peter Lang, newly promoted to B Grade won the grade sash, 94/100, while Kaylene Estcourt wasn't to be denied taking B Grade 2nd, 90/100. For Ronald Press, it was another C Grade win, 86/100 with Kirsten Chinn 2nd 86/102 after a very short shoot off against William Griffiths of Korumburra Gun Club.

HiLux: rugged new look "Designed and developed over a three-year vehicle program, all the new components on these stunning HiLux models are fully integrated and engineered into the core vehicle and covered by the standard factory warranty. "The Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged are not accessorised special editions, they are fully fledged new HiLux models that our customers demanded and we can be justifiably proud that they were designed and developed here in Australia," he said. With its off-road focus, the Rugged X builds on the SR5 on which it is based with a host of protective, functional and recovery features. At the front, the wince-compatible, heavyduty steel front bat, with integrated bash plate, LED lightbar and driving lights provides effective off-road protection and, together with the new design grille, gives the Rugged X a striking and tough aesthetic. Further protective and recovery features include a snorkel, purposeful side rock rails that are able to support a fully laden vehicle, front and rear recovery points and a new heavy-duty steel rear bar and integrated tow bar. The rear tub of the Rugged X has also been designed for functionality with a new steel
sports bar that can support a vertical load of 75kg and, with multiple tiedown points, secure up to 200kg on the floor of the tub. Inside, the new Rugged X delivers all the comfort and style of a premium double cab ute, including leather-accented seats. A new design instrument cluster, metallic black ornamentation and black headlining complete the interior design theme. The new HiLux Rogue has been designed with a more urban adventurer customer in mind and features redesigned from and rear ends that reflect Toyota's global truck design DNA. Designed in Australia, and developed in conjunction with the Toyota engineering team in Thailand, the HiLux Rogue is a stylish premium HiLux model that will be sold in markets around the world. The new, more vertical front-end and outboard driving lights give the vehicle a strong, assertive appearance that is complemented by clean lines and a near rear bumper - all with a contemporary black and grey colour palette. The tub also gains the same practical and stylish sports bar as all the new HiLux models,
along with a bespoke tonneau cover for added protection and security. As a premium model, the Rogue also gains the same interior features and trim as the Rugged X. The new Rugged model is based on the HiLux SR and is aimed at customers who want the extra functionality and features of the Rugged X but with the protection offered by a traditional steel bulbar. Like the Rugged X, the Rugged also features a snorkel, redesigned grille, side rock rails, sports bar and heavy-duty steel rear bar, together recovery points. All three new HiLux models share the same mechanical specifications as the SR5 or SR models on which they are based and are powered by a proven, strong and efficient 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. Driving through a part-time, shift-on-thefly 4x4 system with a full set of low-range ratios, the engine generates maximum power of 130kW and 450Nm of torque with optional sixspeed automatic transmission or 420Nm when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox.
