Ice, cash and guns

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 50-year-old Endeavour Hills man has been jailed after police seized a large amount of ice, more than $400,000 cash, a stolen motorbike and firearms from his home.

John Koutsogiannakis pleaded guilty to trafficking ice, illegally possessing firearms as well as proceeds of crime charges at the Victorian County Court.

During a police raid of his home on 9 November 2015, officers seized 152 grams of meth - more than 50 per cent above the commercial trafficking threshold.

It was found in 31 zip-lock bags in a bedroom safe and in a box along with traffickinglike paraphernalia such as scales, an array of

mobile phones and a notebook of names and figures.

Meth had also been flushed down the master bedroom's en suite toilet, Judge Paul Lacava said during sentencing on 13 April.

The former trucking manager was an ice addict at the time but the bulk of the seized drug was for trafficking purposes, the judge said.

Police also found 211 grams of the recreational drug 1,4-butanediol and $400,199.45 cash in various locations - including $1214.45 in coins.

Koutsogiannakis was also charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a Browning sawn-off 12-gauge shotgun and a 0.455 silver Webley Patents Mark I revolver and an imitation eight-millimetre Bruni P4 handgun.

He claimed the weapons were bought in self-defence after he was injured during a "run-through" by intruders at his home.

"That suggests an intention to use the guns if necessary and does not excuse your offending," Judge Lacava said.

The judge noted the shotgun was loaded with salt rather than cartridges at the time.

However the prevalence of such weapons associated with drugs was also noted.

At the time of offending, Koutsogiannakis was on a community corrections order for drug and stolen goods charges. The order included drug-addiction treatment.

He had previously been convicted four times, including for firearms offences. However his life was "unblemished" in front of the

law up until he was 40 years old.

He had considerable ability, hard work ethic and had contributed to society and family in the past, Judge Lacava noted.

About 2015, life changed "unrecognisably" after he became addicted to illicit drugs and estranged from his wife, children and parents.

Since the raid, the accused had responded well to 27 days in intensive drug-addiction therapy to overcome his 1.5-gram a day ice habit, the court heard.

He was only likely to re-offend if he relapsed into drug use, the judge said.

Koutsogiannakis was convicted and jailed for up to four years, with a non-parole period of at least 32 months.

Honouring the Anzacs The Endeavour Hills War Memorial hosted an early Anzac Day service.

The Dandenong Cranbourne RSL SubBranch event on Friday 20 April featured City of Casey Councillor Rosalie Crestani as guest speaker.

Violent offender ‘tragedy’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong magistrate has told a violent family violence offender that their life-story was an "exceptional" tragedy during a sentencing hearing on 9 April.

The 32-year-old man's litany of bereavement began with the near-simultaneous death of his alcoholic father and grandmother 14 years ago, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

It was followed more recently by the demise of his four-year-old daughter through a rare disease as well as his mother from cancer.

"Anyone who hears your story would have enormous sympathy for what you've gone through," magistrate Jack Vandersteen said.

On the other hand, the alcoholic - who downed about a slab of beer a day - demonstrated he could hurt others around him, the judge noted.

In February last year, the man argued with his ex-partner after they drove to a bottle shop to buy bourbon and Coke.

He shoved her head into the car's dashboard and punched her in the mouth, causing a fat lip, the court heard.

With a stream of abuse, the man attacked her again inside the home in front of her housemates. The assault continued on the driveway with punches to her neck and head, the court was told.

His yelling was so loud that neighbours stepped in. He screamed at them, and continued to strike the ex-partner.

Police and an ambulance were called for the victim, bruised to her face and neck.

The man was also charged several times with driving unlicensed, one count of speeding 20 km/h over the speed limit and one count of drink-driving with a 0.091 blood-al-

cohol reading.

On the latter occasion, he told police he'd been drinking bourbon; he didn't know how much.

He told police he'd committed two petrol drive-offs earlier this year because he'd struggled to pay for his mother's funeral in December.

Defence lawyer Farah Banihali told of how the man's alcoholic father clung onto life support for several weeks after striking his head during a diabetic seizure.

On the day he died, the grandmother suffered a fatal stroke. The two were buried on the same day.

In 2012, the man's daughter was born with a rare condition that malformed her face and brain.

She died four years later.

Mr Vandersteen noted the man's youth, mental health and alcohol-related battles and his relatively "old" history of previous offending.

He urged the man to make the most of his work ethic, work opportunities and stable accommodation.

"The scales are tipped in favour of you," he said.

"Your family live on through you.

"In the courts, we hear stories of how people get in trouble. Yours is exceptional, I have to say, but you need to engage."

The man had been arrested the preceding weekend, and had probably suffered during his three days in custody due to alcohol withdrawal, Mr Vandersteen noted.

He was sentenced to a 12-month treatment-based community corrections order with conviction, as well as an 18-month loss of driving licence.

Weapons detected at ‘racist’ protest A man has faced court for taking a knuckleduster and flick-knife to a white-supremacist rally in Dandenong last year, a court has heard.

Martin Walker pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 17 April to two counts of possessing weapons in a declared controlledweapon zone.

Police had declared the zone in a central area of Dandenong during a planned protest by the True Blue Crew on 11 June, 2017, the court heard.

According to the group’s Facebook page, the rally was about taking a “stand against violent crime”, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Gary van der Poel said.

The group’s social media pages espoused views against Islamicisation, asylum seekers and open borders, he told the court.

At 1.15pm on the day of the protest, Walker was pulled over in his car by police at a zone checkpoint on Princes Highway.

Under broader police search powers as part of the zone, Walker was scanned by a metal detector and given a pat-down search, the court heard.

During a search of his car, police found the weapons in a side-door pocket.

A defence lawyer told the court that Walker had forgotten the weapons were in his car at the time.

The father of four practised martial arts as a young man, but not for a significant time.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said a 19-year-old Noble Park North man got into the cab about 8pm on Tuesday 10 April.

He allegedly produced an imitation firearm once inside and demanded the driver, 40, hand over money.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Walker’s previous criminal history included a suspended sentence relating to a knife.

He was concerned that Walker had weapons while associating with a “politically organised” group that “basically stands for racism”.

Walker wasn’t well managing his significant psychiatric diagnosis by attending the protest with weapons, Mr Vandersteen said.

“I don’t understand why you’d go to something like this, that effectively creates disharmony in the community.”

Walker was convicted and placed on a 12-month good-behaviour bond with a condition that he continues his psychiatric treatment.

By Casey Neill Police hope a burn-off near the Great Ocean Road will help them to solve a fatal shooting in Keysborough.

Muhamed Yucel, 22, was shot in the chest and killed while playing computer games in the garage of a Church Road house about 9.55pm on 2 May. Last month, Homicide Squad investigators revealed that the death was a case of mistaken identity linked to outlaw motorcycle gangs and appealed for information.

They now have a firearm that has been forensically linked to the shooting, and the burn was a search for further evidence in relation to that.

Police said Forest Fire Management Victoria would conduct a burn on their behalf in grassland near Eastern View Beach on Thursday 18 April.

The burn started about 1pm and continued through the afternoon.

When the Journal went to print, police were searching the burn area and had no new information to report.

Police said they also had information that a grey Toyota Corolla might have travelled to the beachside area around the time of the shooting and would like to hear from anyone who saw it at the time.

They released an image of a similar vehicle.

In the fatal shooting, two other Keysborough men, aged 23 and 22 at the time, received single gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.

A dark coloured four-wheel drive or similar vehicle was seen leaving the scene and it's unknown how many people were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Weld jobs bonanza

By Casey Neill A roadside sign pleaded for welders to stop and take a job at a Dandenong South manufacturer.

The desperate move by Hilton Manufacturing late last year highlighted a positive problem plaguing the region's makers.

The sector is "going great guns" according to South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden.

So great that it can't find enough workers to keep up with the growth.

"The biggest need in the area at the moment are welders," he said.

"It's going to be one of the most highly-paid jobs in the next five years."

He said the average age of a welder was about 56 but encouraging younger workers into the field was tough given the push towards high-tech careers.

"The problem with a job of the future is that those jobs don't exist today," he said.

"You need the right people, the right skills for today's business.

"We have a breakdown in communicating the job opportunities to the job-seekers."

Mr Boden said there were about 4500 new manufacturing jobs in the South-East.

"I don't know a company that I've talked to in the past four to five months that doesn't have a positive story," he said.

"Most of them have got 12 months work ahead of them, 18 months ago they were lucky to have one.

He said the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) was a world-wide indicator for manufacturing's economic health.

"Anything over 50 shows growth," he said.

"I think, according to the Australian Industry Group, it's now 18 months of growth.

"And the number has hit 63 which is really high - the highest in at least 20 years.

"Most countries that are growing, if they hit about 55, 56 they're really happy."

Welding is a highly sought-after skill.

He put the growth down to governments investing in infrastructure.

"The trick is to turn that into consolidated growth," he said.

"Once you've built the tunnel, what do you do next?

"We need a long-term plan so people can see there is always going to be structural investment."

He said there had also been a move back to buying locally where possible.

"I don't think China is competitive and it's difficult to get over here at the right quality," he said.

In the South-East, he said companies were struggling "not to survive, but to find people so they can keep growing".

There are thousands of unemployed people in Greater Dandenong and thousands of jobs available.

Shouldn't it be simple to plug the gaps?

"It's alignment of skills and alignment of attitude," he said.

"In some cases it would take very little to get some people into those jobs.

"It's almost case by case, identifying the barriers to getting someone into a role.

"It can be simple things. A bicycle can get someone to work in some cases."

Mr Boden said public transport to the industrial areas was still inadequate, and suggested companies could looking into establishing their own shuttle bus from Dandenong Railway Station.

He said the only negative in manufacturing in the area was that the growth was mostly internal.

"People are still not looking at export as an opportunity," he said.

"There are significant markets out there. think a lot of smaller companies think it's too hard."

Tech trade A Cranbourne welder has been named the best in the state.

Chisholm TAFE student and Dandenong South worker Blake McDonald took home the Best Welder in Victoria title at the third annual welding triathlon at its Frankston campus on Saturday 14 April.

The 12 competitors ranged from apprentices to professional welders and instructors.

They demonstrated their skills in three timed events designed to showcase their knowledge of three different welding processes, materials and positions.

Judges assessed their speed, accuracy, skill and adherence to welding procedures.

Competitors used industry-standard welding tools plus a Lincoln virtual reality welding machine.

Mr McDonald, who works at Bar Crusher Boats in Dandenong South, won first place.

"I found it challenging this year having to use the Lincoln VR machine. That was a surprise!" he said.

"I've competed the last two years and came last in 2017.

"I was determined to do better this year I've done a full 180."

Event organiser and Chisholm teacher Rodney Bentvelzen said the event promoted welding as an attractive career choice, allowed participants to network with inspectors, fellow welders, and industry leaders and showed the general public Chisholm's training facilities.

"Welding and manufacturing in Australia demands high-quality tradespeople to stay competitive and has traditionally been very manual," he said.

"As welding machine technologies adapt via programming and inverter power sources welding has become a highly technical skill."

Chisholm is one of only two Registered Training Organisations in Australia accredited to run International Institute of Welding (IIW) welding specialist and inspector courses.

Jail likely after guns raid

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong North man arrested as part of extensive police raids against commercial drug and firearm trafficking has been offered 18 months’ jail as a sentence indication.

Adam Tadros, 40, was among 14 people arrested in Operation Bonito raids across Melbourne including Cranbourne North, Clyde North, Hallam and Dandenong North on 17 April.

He faced charges of possessing a firearm as a prohibited person, retaining a firearm as a stolen good and possession of cannabis at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on the same day.

The court heard Tadros became linked to the investigation during a transaction between a police covert operative and a Hallam man who organised the trafficking ring.

The operative had allegedly arranged by text-message to buy a M200 bolt-action rifle

from the alleged Hallam ringleader.

On 20 December, they drove to Tadros’s family home address, described by the Hallam man as a “safe house” for stored weapons, the court heard.

The man spoke to Tadros at the home’s front door and then entered a horse float in the front yard, emerging with the weapon down his pants.

The weapon was transferred to the police operative’s car boot.

The operative paid $1700 for the gun, which had been stolen during a burglary in Berwick in 2015, the court heard.

During the 17 April raid, Tadros was arrested at home with a small amount of cannabis seized from the garage.

His lawyer told the court that Tadros did not know the weapon was stored in the horse float.

He’d just moved back to what was his parents’ home.

“My instructions are he didn’t know it was there and he was angry with Mr Singh for putting it in their moveable property.”

The lawyer noted Tadros was not linked to any other trafficking activity despite undoubtedly being under surveillance for the past five months.

“He’s tainted in some respects by the whole operation and the offending that took place.”

Prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told the court that Tadros was prohibited to possess a weapon due to recently undergoing a supervised community corrections order.

Police sought a jail term due to Tadros’s similar prior offences and being part of a larger-scale illegal operation.

“Community safety and protection should be at the forefront of sentencing.”

Magistrate Pauline Spencer offered Tadros 18 months’ jail as a sentence indication if he pleaded guilty.

Ms Spencer said firearms were a significant risk to the community, noting that Tadros was particularly culpable being prohibited to possess guns.

She said she’d remand him in custody for two weeks to seek further legal advice.

Tadros shook his head and took deep breaths in the dock.

“I don’t know. I’ve never been in this situation.”

He was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 May. Others arrested in the raids were Rajeev Singh, of Hallam, Jacob Bentley and Amy Kehl.

The three appeared at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the same day and were remanded for a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 24 April.

Margaret Jimirez was remanded for a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 April.

Raids target drugs and guns, with 14 people arrested Almost 100 police raided 10 homes, arrested 14 people and seized drugs and guns following a 10-month trafficking investigation.

The Springvale-based Divisional Response Unit (DRU) executed warrants at 10 properties in the early hours of Tuesday 17 April as part of Operation Bonito.

Properties targeted included homes in Nourat Place, Cranbourne North, Bellario Circuit and Trainers Way in Clyde North, Bakers Road in Dandenong North and Alexander Avenue in Hallam.

Inspector Mick Daly said long, hard work by investigators identified the main players.

“This is a network of people,” he said.

“We’re happy that we got the ringleader.”

He said they also nabbed those on the next level and the periphery.

“I’m sure when they entred into these ventures they never thought they would be caught,” he said.

Insp Daly said the operation was ongoing and there were still other avenues of inquiry.

Police seized about 500 grams of methylamphetamine, two litres of GHB, more than 100 prescription pills.

“GHB’s a very dangerous drug,” Insp Daly said.

“We’ve seen numerous overdoses over the years.

“To get this amount of fluid off the market is a great achievement for us.

“The most significant seizures are the firearms.”

They included a revolver, a shotgun, a rifle and a fully automatic pistol.

Other weapons seized included tazers, knuckle dusters and daggers.

Police charged a 26-year-old Hallam man with trafficking firearms and a commercial quantity of amphetamines.

They also charged a 54-year-old Hallam woman for breaching a court order and a 44-year-old Hallam man with possessing a drug of dependence, committing an indictable

offence while on bail and driving matters.

They issued a 29-year-old Hallam man with a penalty notice for breaching a bail condition.

Police charged a 26-year-old Cranbourne man with trafficking amphetamines and were to charge a 27-year-old Cranbourne woman with the same crime.

Almost 100 police members from Crime Command, Casey CIU, Greater Dandenong CIU, Southern Metro Crime Team, Frontline Tactical Unit, Special Operations Group, Critical Incident Response Team and the Dog Squad were involved in the warrants.

100 years ago 25 April 1918 About people Captain E K Keys has recently been promoted from the rank of Lieutenant, an advice to that effect having been received by his parents, Mr and Mrs W G Keys of Keysborough.

Captain Keys, who is in charge of a motor gun battery, enlisted in September 1914, was wounded at Gallipoli and has been in France since he recovered from the injury he received.

Corpl Fred Keys, a brother after three years' service in Egypt, has returned to Australia and a third son was sent to England suffering with trench fever, but latest information indicates that he is probably in France at the present time.

A good record for all concerned.

25 April 1968 Dandenong 'sure of prosperity' The City of Dandenong had all the necessary requisites for success in industrial development and would continue to prosper, the Premier Sir Henry Bolte said on Monday.

Well-established world-wide concerns formed the base of Dandenong's industry and the widespread and comprehensive service industries which support them, the premier said.

Sir Henry was on an official visit to Dandenong and was shown around by the Mayor Cr Peter Wagstaff and Mr Len Reid MLA. The inspection began at the Dandenong stock yards where Sir Henry was impressed with the efficiency of the yards and sheds.

After inspecting the stock yards Sire Henry was met by the president of the Victorian branch of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society, Mr Roy Bassett, and was shown Greaves

Reserve, the site of the Dandenong Show.

After Sir Henry praised the foresight which went in to the planning of the reserve.

After a brief tour of Dandenong the Premier visited the new Liberal Party rooms.

20 years ago 27 April 1998 Surprise $30,000 haul Police raids on two houses in Springvale last week saw the recovery of stolen goods to the value of $30,000.

In a joint operation between Springvale CIB and uniform branch acting on an anonymous tip raided the two houses on 16 April and discovered the vast booty.

However, stolen goods were not what the police expected...

"We were acting off an anonymous tip off about cannabis growing in the back yards so what we discovered took us by surprise."

5 years ago 22 April 2013 Councillors reject call to resign Two Greater Dandenong councillors have brushed aside calls from a Bangholme resident to resign over the proposed rezoning of 3.37 hectares of green wedge land.

The State Government's Urban Growth Boundary Anomalies Advisory Committee's report, released last week, rejected the council's submission that the area bounded by EastLink, Harwood Road, Frankston-Dandenong Road and Eumemmerring Creek was a green wedge anomaly.

Mr Hood last week accused councillors Peter Brown and John Kelly - who moved and seconded for the land to be included in the council's submission in November 2011 - of misleading the council by saying Melbourne Water supported the inclusion.

Seek help to find the light In 2014, I recited a speech about using trade as a catalyst for aid in deference to traditional aid methods.

Despite the applause the speech received, I felt a sinking feeling inside of me.

Instead of delighting in the praise, I felt as if there was a fog growing around me and everything became distant.

What I didn't realise at the time was that I was relapsing into depression, and that the dark hole that is often written and talked about was taking hold of me.

Mental illness can affect anyone from all walks of life.

It can creep up on you so unexpectedly that sometimes you wonder, why me?

I was newly married, had bought a house, was raising two beautiful young kids and living the life I had imagined.

I had a pleasant upbringing, engaged in sports and pursued all my passions.

I was even given a young achiever award.

But after my second child was born, all that didn't seem to matter and I felt myself falling into despair and constant failure, into what was the first instance of postnatal depression.

The pressure has taken its toll.

I found myself fumbling and making regrettable mistakes.

I found myself being dragged along and tak-

en advantage of and did not realise how much control I had lost over my mind and body.

I was unable to coherently articulate what was going on and found myself at complete loss of direction and became incredibly numb.

Every conversation and every task became a Goliath effort.

With my change in behaviour came the torrent of judgement and abuse from those who did not understand what was going on.

I became enclosed in a shell and although I was trying to ward off the bullying that often unfortunately encompasses mental health cases, it created a sense of empathy in me as I knew this must happen to many out there, but there are limited voices to advocate for the plight.

The stigma of mental illness is real and not widely understood in the community and bureaucracy.

I felt I was not able to access the right services in the public sector at the time and the rotating assistance only made the problem worst - it was only in the private sector that I was able to get clarity.

At the same time, I was unwilling to speak about it because of the fear of backlash.

But this shouldn't be the case, as seeking help does wonders and puts your life back together so you can be the person that you want to be.

Mental health assistance and awareness should be on the top of our agenda and something that should not be feared and stigmatised.

By Casey Neill A wealth of war stories will be unearthed at Springvale Botanical Cemetery this Anzac Day. Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) historian and cultural heritage manager Dr Celestina Sagazio will host a tour through the site, including the Springvale War Cemetery, from noon on Wednesday 25 April.

She's just written a book exploring the cemetery's rich military connections, Victorian War Heritage.

Lance Corporal Arthur Ruduss features. He was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1936 and left Australia for service on 14 May 1966.

Dr Sagazio said he served in Malaya and Borneo before being transferred to Vietnam, where he spent just 30 days.

"He died of shrapnel wounds to the chest from friendly-fire in Phuoc Tuy on 12 June 1966," she said.

"He was 29.

"His mother did not know he was in Vietnam.

"He was originally buried in Terendak Cem-

etery in Malaysia before it was government policy to repatriate our dead."

Dr Sagazio said that on 10 June 2016, former original members of 7RAR along with Ruduss' youngest brother, two sisters and nieces and nephew attended his reburial.

"Current members of 7RAR came to Victoria to act as bearers and an honour guard," she said.

James 'Jimmy' Melbourne was a notable Indigenous Australian who served in WWI. "In 1900 he became the first Aboriginal person to play Australian Rules football at a state level, representing West Perth," Dr Sagazio said.

"He survived the war, however on 13 December 1937 he was murdered at his home in South Melbourne.

"His landlord was convicted of Melbourne's manslaughter."

Melbourne was laid to rest in an unmarked grave for 80 years.

"In 2015 the WA government and various organisations funded a monument for his grave to ensure that the soldier, footballer and

trailblazer was appropriately remembered," she said.

"The headstone itself contained granite from Ballardong country, his hometown of York.

"On 18 September 2015 there was a military service held at his grave to erect the headstone to commemorate his legacy and unveil his monument."

Dr Sagazio said eight Victoria Cross (VC) recipients were laid to rest in Springvale Botanical Cemetery, more than any other cemetery in Victoria.

"The VC was awarded to those who displayed conspicuous bravery," she said.

"Each of their stories is astonishing and a reminder of the incredible courage individuals are capable of in the face of great danger."

The meeting place for the Anzac Day tour is the cafe at the Clarence Reardon Centre.

Victorian War Heritage is available free of charge in hard copy from the Springvale Botanical Cemetery office and electronically from smct.org.au.

Freda Lawton marched through Melbourne in her Air Force uniform to recruit for the World War II effort.

The Uniting AgeWell Noble Park resident played the drums in the Women's Auxiliary Australian Force (WAAF) band while serving from 1942 to 1946.

Australian women were not allowed to hold combat roles but Ms Lawton and thousands of women like her still played a part in the war effort.

They returned to the workforce or changed careers to free up men who were needed overseas.

The ladies worked as telegraphists, electricians, fitters, flight mechanics, meteorological assistants, clerks, medics, caterers and more.

"I was a clerk so I did the paperwork, and I rose to the exalted rank of corporal," Ms Lawton said.

"I worked at Laverton, which was more or less a supplier of engineering parts, and then the Air Force headquarters in Preston."

She said the highlight of her time with the WAAF was when decorated military pilot Peter Stuart Isaacson flew in on the first Avro Lancaster Bomber to arrive from England.

Wing Commander Isaacson was well known for flying his plane under the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1943.

Ms Lawton will remember her own service on Anzac Day, as well as her father's.

He served in the Fifth Pioneer Battalion in Egypt during World War I. She remembers marching with her dad each year and laying a wreath at the Tongala Bush Nursing Hospital, in the small country town where she grew up.

This Wednesday 25 April, she'll watch the Anzac Day services on television.

Ron’s flaming good career

By Casey Neill There are only two CFA stations in the state that Ron Harris hasn't worked at - and they both opened this year.

After 46 years serving as a firefighter across Victoria, the Springvale Fire Brigade employee is hanging up his hat.

It was firefighter John Minett, who died in the Ash Wednesday bushfires, who first suggested Mr Harris sign up.

"I joined as a volunteer in 1972 at Noble Park," he said.

"In 1981 I joined the staff. I never planned to but just did."

He arrived at Springvale in 1983.

"It's just a great place to work," he said.

"Because you work as a team, whenever you go to a job you always rely on other people."

"The brigade's been good to me.

"They've made me a life member down there.

"I'm a life member of the CFA." Age was a factor in the 68-year-old calling it a day, but health was the major reason for his decision.

He's had several skin cancers removed.

"I've had three operations on my head, I've got to have more," he said.

He's going to enjoy life while he can by spending more time with his two children and five grandchildren, clearing out the back yard and getting through his to-do list - after footy season.

Mr Harris umpires with the South East Juniors and has clocked up about 1300 games, including 32 grand finals.

"I'm still getting grand finals so I'll just keep umpiring," he said.

He said the state's biggest bushfires were the ones that had stuck with him, including Lara, the Otways, Ash Wednesday and Black Saturday.

He arrived at 9.30pm and it was still burning at 11am the next day.

"I went to Phar Lap's stables when they got burnt down in Braeside Park," he said.

"We got a report of a shed fire.

"We got down there and realised it wasn't a shed and there wasn't much left.

"The thing about the role is that there's not one job that's the same.

"No house is the same. They're all different in design, they all have different people who

live there."

He's also trained in emergency medical response and regularly reached heart attack and drug overdose victims before paramedics.

"You're doing more life-saving work rather than just training and sitting around at the station," he said.

One job that has stuck with him involved a mother driving her three children home from the Sandown races.

She swerved to miss a dog and hit a lamp post.

"All three children were ejected from the car," Mr Harris said.

"They all died."

He was among the first on the scene, and sent out the instruction to hold off on sharing the devastating news with their mother.

"While she's alive and thinks her kids are alive, she'll live because she's got something to live for," he said.

She called him when she got out of hospital and thanked him.

"She said 'I deep down knew that the kids were deceased, but thanks for not letting me think they were'," he said.

"It's all part of the job."

Funerals of the future Dandenong is now home to a 'funeral home of the future' thanks to InvoCare's $3.4 million renovation of its Le Pine facility on the Princes Highway.

The renovated home was officially opened by the Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong Youhorn Chea on Tuesday 17 April.

Combining White Lady Funerals and Le Pine Funerals under one roof, the Dandenong facility includes two arranging rooms, a viewing room, a memorial lounge with outdoor deck and a 170 seat (200 standing) nondenominational chapel - the largest capacity chapel in the South-East.

Car parking has also been expanded to 55 onsite spaces.

Regional manager of Le Pine Funerals Ashley Crow said the refurbished home continued the company's six decade presence on the site.

"We have been operating from this site here in Dandenong for almost 70 years, after acquiring William Garnar & Sons Funeral Directors in the 1950s," Mr Crow said.

"This project started over ten years ago under our previous general manager John Fowler.

"Today marks a new chapter for Le Pine.

This $3.4 million facility offers more choice in contemporary products and services to cater for the ever changing needs of our client families.

"But more importantly, it allows us to continue to offer a personalised funeral, that embraces innovation while maintaining our core traditional values.

"We are looking forward now to getting the public in to see what we have created."

Food is made from scratch, fresh throughout the day.

"There has been a lot of investment in technology. There are lots of options about what is displayed on screen throughout the building," Ms Worrall said.

"There is the capacity to deal with a multitude of different file formats and we also have live streaming available on this site."

Team11 bid ramps up for the South-East

By Nick Creely The plan to secure an A-League club in the south-east Melbourne region is one step closer to reality, with the Football Federation Australia (FFA) formally commencing its process to expand the league by two new clubs from the 2019/20 season.

The FFA recently invited all parties interested in obtaining a licence to participate in the Hyundai A-League to respond to the Expression of Interest (EOI) by the FFA. The closing date of the submission of the EOI is 24 May 2018, with a confirmation of shortlisted bidders in June, a release of request for proposals on 11 June, with a submission of proposals due by 31 August.

An announcement will then be made on 31 October by the FFA, which will outline which bids will be granted a licence.

Team11 is the official name of the southeast bid, with former Herald Sun writer - and

Berwick local - Matt Windley on board as the full-time Project Officer, working closely with the steering committee, which features State Member for Dandenong Gabrielle Williams MP, Cr Jim Memeti (Greater Dandenong City Council), Garry McQuillan (Cardinia Shire Council), Peter Fitchett (Casey City Council) and Team11 Ambassador Vince Grella, a former Socceroo who played junior football for Springvale City.

Back on 4 May 2017, The Greater Dandenong City Council, City of Casey and Cardinia Shire Council signed an historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining their vision and commitment to secure a new A-League, W-League and National Youth League Club for south-east Melbourne.

The bid envisages playing out of a boutique stadium in the heart of Greater Dandenong, with a capacity nearing 10,000 seats. Currently, the steering committee is in the process of securing funding from the State Government, with a key announcement to be made later

next week in regards to the exact venue and whether they will be granted funding.

Plans for a Casey Centre of Excellence are also well underway, which will rely on partnership investments. With a main training facility based out of Casey Fields, the men and women will potentially train on an A-Grade pitch in a world class facility that will have the potential to host W-League matches, youth team matches and A-League pre-season fixtures.

Inside the facility will be state-of-the-art facilities, with a top-line administrative space for men and women.

Team11 also aims to provide ample opportunity for local talent, as well as engage with local football clubs not only in the Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia regions, but also in the Mornington Peninsula and Kingston areas, with Windley having only recently gone out to regional forums with clubs such as Pakenham United, Langwarrin, Berwick City and Chelsea FC.

Our local hopes at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games have represented Australia with pride.

In what was a highly successful Games for Australia as a whole, our local competitors have also claimed multiple medals and competed valiantly in an array of competitions.

Steph Blicavs, from Endeavour Hills, claimed a gold medal as Australia dominated their rivals on the basketball court. Fellow WNBL Dandenong Ranger teammate and SEABL Ranger, Tessa Lavey also suited up for Australia and helped guide the team to gold.

The Opals claimed gold in women's basketball with a dominant 99-55 win over England in the final. Blicavs drained two triples and finished with seven points, whilst Lavey recorded five points, three rebounds and three assists.

The Opals went through the tournament undefeated, averaging a ridiculous 53-point winning margin.

Heming Hu, a Dandenong local and Rio Olympian, finished fifth in the men's team event and men's doubles, whilst also making it to the round of 16 in mixed doubles and men's singles.

Along the way, Hu won seven matches in total.

Rio Olympian and Narre Warren local, Sawan Serasinghe competed in three badminton events. Serasinghe finished fifth in mixed doubles and the mixed team event, whilst in the men's doubles he and partner Matthew Chau made it to the round of 16.

Overall, Australia claimed an incredible 198 medals in total; 80 gold, 59 silver and 59 bronze. That total was streaks ahead of next best England, who finished with 136 medals; 45 gold, 45 silver and 46 bronze.

Trish tops Victorian title In almost three decades of speedway racing, Trish Dike had never been able to win a Victorian title. However, on Sunday 15 April on home soil at Drouin Speedway, she finally managed to get the monkey off her back.

Having spent the last few seasons contesting Ladies Standard Saloons, Trish had previously come close to achieving Victorian title success, qualifying on pole for the 2011 running of the event at Darlington's Mid-Western Speedway, before unfortunately being pushed wide by a lapped car and ultimately coming second.

Determined to go one better in last Sunday's Victorian Title, the competitive racer, who is based in Eumemmerring, tried to keep her nerves at bay during the event, placing second in

her first heat race and fifth in heat-race two due to experiencing clutch problems.

Trish put in a hard-charging performance, driving from position seven to take the win, before later finding out that she had qualified in pole position for the Victorian title-deciding feature race.

Trish managed to make the most of her start, taking the early lead and holding her position on the pole line on what was a smooth track surface.

Following a few stoppages, where she was able to retain her lead, Trish eventually saw the white flag and knew that success was just moments away.

Reminding herself to breathe as she completed her final lap, Trish didn't put a foot wrong,

going on to claim what could only be described as an emotion-charged victory.

"I was absolutely ecstatic when I crossed the finish line in first place and realised that I'd just won the Victorian title," commented Trish, who, along with fellow racer Michelle Sinclair, created history by becoming the first ever nannas to occupy the front row in a Victorian title.

"There were so many emotions in the cockpit and I was quite overwhelmed by them all, particularly the relief of finally managing to pull it off after being second numerous times previously, as well as seeing my son Cam place second in the men's Victorian title.

"To say that it's a huge family effort would be an understatement. I had so many family

members and friends at the track cheering me on, which really bolstered me and gave me some confidence, so I have to say a huge thank you to them, along with all of my sponsors."

Being born into the sport of speedway, Trish attended her first ever race meeting at just six months old, later marrying speedway racer John Dike, whose family had also had a long involvement in the sport.

Racing, herself, for around 27 years, Dike has contested multiple different classes, including Division 2 Hot Rods, Bumper Cars, Mini Sprints and One Litre Sedans, as well as enjoying a stint in her cousin Jack Day Wingless Sprint, where she impressively placed third overall in the first ever running of the Ladies in the Dirt Series.

Rays reaping the rewards

By Hayley Wildes It's fair to say the Dandenong Stingrays were handed a tough schedule to begin their 2018 TAC Cup campaign.

As if trips to Geelong, Morwell and Bendigo for the first three games of the season weren't challenging enough, they also had to contend with just a four-day break between facing the Falcons and Power.

But if there is one thing we know about the 'Rays, it's that they don't make excuses - they get on with the job and continue to work hard.

Mark Wheeler, Dandenong Stingrays Talent Manager, admitted the travel was a test, but is happy to have made it through that tough travel schedule.

"We'd rather have our travel at the start of the year than the end of the year, so you will see at the end of the year we're limiting our travel.

It's definitely been a great start to the season."

Wheeler said.

The depth of the team has been a standout.

13 individual goal kickers in the 97-point demolition of the Greater Western Victoria Rebels on the 7th of April was evidence of that.

Talking about that performance against the Rebels, in which the 'Rays were without stars Riley Bowman and Bailey Williams who were on AFL Academy duties, Wheeler was thrilled with the unselfishness of the team.

"All of us were sitting in front of the coach's box in the last quarter and we were just sitting there going 'this is probably the tightest group we've seen'." Wheeler said.

"They've gelled together and were definitely giving it to the person who was in the best position, so there was no selfish football out there.

We've just got to hold this group together and see if they can continue to do it."

Another factor that has seen the team get off to a strong start is the experience of the group.

Wheeler explains, "Most of our boys had played four TAC Cup games already. It is very unusual where at the start of the season, half your team has already played four or five TAC Cup games."

"I think that depth has really helped us out.

We played most of our 17 year olds last year and I think that's what has held us in good stead for this year."

If you need more evidence that the Stingrays are in one of the strongest positions in recent memory, you need not look any further than the recently released initial Victoria Country squad for the 2018 NAB AFL U18 Championships.

With 17 players named, and Angus Patterson being added in since, there will be a huge Stingrays presence at the Championships later this year.

"Definitely it's the most we've had." Wheeler said. "The two Cumming's boys [Stephen and Matthew] will be playing for the Northern Territory, and if they weren't, they would've been in the Vic Country squad too. So to have 18 players in the Vic Country squad is definitely a record."

Those named in the squad have all had impressive summers and improved over the preseason, but Wheeler highlighted a couple who have really stood out.

"Zac Foot from Langwarrin really struggled to make it into our program as a 17-year-old. He was playing against men last year and I watched him and I'd say he had one of the best summers

out of our group." Wheeler said.

"Bailey Schmidt is another good story as well. He broke his leg as a 16-year-old and it took him all the way through to his 17th year to get that right. Now he's starting to show why he's one of the best big men around and as the season goes on, he'll only get better."

Whilst the depth is evident, Wheeler also talked about the importance of strong leadership within the group.

"Our players get to choose the leadership group, so it's a vote from within - the coaches get a vote too - but the players get to choose.

I think we've got a really strong leadership."

Wheeler said.

"They set the rules and the boundaries and to their credit at this stage, all the boys are definitely following them."

Captains Campbell Hustwaite and Mitch Riordan have different leadership styles, but

both are terrific leaders in their own right.

"Campbell Hustwaite has probably got more to say than Mitch Riordan; he's more a follow me on the footy field leader, whereas Campbell is a bit more vocal in the group." Wheeler said.

"They've got a good control on the group and we're fortunate that we've got a deep leadership group and as we've said to all players; everyone is a leader at this football club, we don't care about a title."

Rowville’s reset - know when it's time to change it up

By Hayley Wildes After a disappointing 2017 campaign that saw the Hawks finish 10th with just five wins in Division 1 of the Eastern Football League, there was a sense that change was needed at the Rowville Football Club.

And change things up, they did.

As Hawks president Paul Mynott explained, they have brought in new coaches at every level, highlighted by the appointment of John Brown as Division 1 head coach.

"We turned over our entire coaching staff - from U19s, through to development and seniors. I think sometimes when you turn over a complete coaching staff, it's like a breath of fresh air to the playing group," he said.

"Pete [Bastinac] was there for four years and his time was up - he'd done a great job for the club but it was time to move on. We've got in new coaching staff and I think the playing group has really got around Browny and everyone is out to impress all those new coaches.

Brown's influence on the team has been profound, but he is also having a positive effect on the entire club.

"We wanted a club coach, not just a coach of the team. When we advertised for the role and guys got interviewed, we actually wanted a guy that was going to coach the footy club and that's not just the senior side - it's the reserves and the whole junior club." Mynott said.

"He's really positive and his communication skills are great. He's been fantastic so far, and we're only a couple of games in, but I've had many, many people say how happy they are with how he's going."

Along with the appointment of Brown, the Hawks recruited heavily as they looked to bounce back from a tough 2017.

Ex-Noble Park trio Ziggy Alwan, Trent Robertson and James Gwilt have added experience and flair to the Hawks, whilst Rowville juniors Matt Tranyor and Aaron Bond have returned to the club after stints in the VFL.

Mynott spoke about what Gwilt has brought to the club - both on and off the field.

"Jimmy has been fantastic - he's come on as a player and assistant coach. He's obviously played 150 games of AFL and I think what he brings to the club is more than just a player, but certainly experience and leadership as well." He said.

"He's been fantastic and has always got a smile on his face - he's a really likeable guy."

The Hawks needed to recruit heavily, given the talent that did leave the club after season 2017. Cam Manuel - who Mynott described as 'one of the best players in the competition', Jordan Bastinac and Jake Dermott all went elsewhere.

"We lost some significantly good players, but we think that the ones we've lost, we replaced with guys that are just as good." Mynott said.

Mynott's hopes for the remainder of the season are simple.

"Obviously every club, every president,

Roberts rules for Rangers

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Rangers had an up and down evening at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night. After the women claimed a win, the men’s side had a disappointing defeat.

For the women’s team, Tayla Roberts owned the night and took over the game when her team needed her most against a valiant Launceston Tornadoes squad.

The Tornadoes took it right up to the Rangers and led by four points at the main break.

That lead was thanks to terrific three-point shooting, led by Alex Wilson (24 points) who drained five first half triples to lead all scorers with 17 at half time.

Needing a spark to open the third quarter, the Rangers certainly got just that from Tayla Roberts who led a 12-0 run to begin the quarter for Dandenong.

The third quarter saw the Rangers outscore the Tornadoes 29-8, to lead by 17 points heading into the final quarter.

Roberts dominated in the post, finishing with a monster double-double of 21 points and 21 rebounds. Whilst she was grabbing rebounds and scoring as her stats suggest, she was also dishing it out to open teammates and blossomed as the focal point of the Rangers offence as the side ran out 72-61 winners.

The Rangers men came up against a hot shooting Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence team that would not be denied. Dandenong fell behind early as the Centre of Excellence came out firing. Dandenong found themselves down 17-29 after the first quarter.

To the Rangers’ credit, they came out much improved in the second quarter and were able to even the scores at 41 heading into half time.

That second quarter fightback was led by Drmic, Tim Lang and Lucas Barker. The trio came out with more energy and the team’s defence caused the Centre of Excellence plenty

In the third term, the Rangers went back into their shells and the Centre of Excellence took advantage of that - regaining the lead and pushing it out to 12 points heading into the final quarter. Throughout that alarming quarter - and the entire night for that matter - there was one man who just kept

Mitchell Lambert and Rory McIvor battled valiantly for the Hawks all day.

Endeavour Hills and Springvale Districts battled it out in a low-scoring affair. Endeavour Hills, led by Ben Moriarty, Byron Hoe and Christopher Webber, were able to overcome a slow start to claim a 5.9 (39) to 5.2 (32) win.

Springvale Districts’ Lachlan Morrey (three goals) tried his best to get his team over the line, but his forward dominance wasn’t enough.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 3 Sandown were in trouble from the outset against Carrum Patterson Lakes. Trailing 1.1 (7) to 6.3 (39) after one quarter, it only got worse from there for the Cobras. Carrum Patterson Lakes’ Brenton Rafferty had his kicking boots on as he booted home seven majors, to lead his team home 17.14 (116) to 9.5 (59).

EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 3 Noble Park simply couldn’t find answer for Norwood’s Leigh Williams as the forward ran riot, booting a whopping 10 goals for the day.

Whilst Williams’ performance was a great one, it was a total team effort that led to Norwood 22.15 (147) demolishing Noble Park 7.14 (56). For Noble Park, on what was a dirty day, Luke Nelson (two goals) was the team’s best, whilst Jake Gains and Kyle Martin battled val-

iantly all day.

After a strong start to the game, Rowville were overrun by Blackburn at Seebeck Oval.

Trailing by 11 points after the first quarter, the Panthers piled on six goals to one in a stunning second quarter turnaround to lead by 19 at the main break. Patrick Contin, Thomas Maher and Ryan Bathie (three goals) were among Blackburn’s best in an impressive performance. Ziggie Alwan (three goals), Cristopher Clarke (three goals) and Jackson McDonald were Rowville’s best.

VAFA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 3 Despite a slow start, St Johns continued to fight it out with Bulleen Templestowe AFC and came away with two points in what was a thrilling draw. Aaron Thornton and Ben Ayache (four goals and three respectively) almost did enough to get their team over the line, but St Johns had to settle for a draw, 14.9 (93) to Bulleen Templestowe 13.15 (93).
