Police target buses in city Police have arrested five people on warrants and fined fare-evaders in a two-day central Geelong bus blitz.

Police, V/Line authorised officers and other authorities issued 40 infringement notices after checking 700 people for correct tickets as part of Operation Moorabool.

Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard said the operation deterred people from committing offences and caught wanted of-

fenders in a boost to public safety.

“We know that most people who use our public transport network do the right thing. However, we will not tolerate the few who choose break the law,“ Geelong’s top cop said.

Police from the Transit Safety Division commenced Operation Moorabool at 9am on Wednesday before concluding the blitz at 2pm Thursday.

Her family has been part of the RSL for four generations. Her grandfather and great uncle served in WWI, and her daughter is also part of the RSL. “It’s our blood,” she said, “my grandfather and father had a hand in putting our clubrooms together.”

Colleen has been treasurer of the Drysdale RSL Women’s Auxiliary for 36 years and counting. She described her most recent honour as “completely unexpected”.

“You join an organisation to see what help you can be for the welfare of our service personal,” she said.

“It’s a job that gives you a great deal of pleasure to be able to do.”

Colleen has also donated fruit cakes and puddings to local clubs and charities, for raffles and fundraising efforts over the years.

By Luke Voogt Two Drysdale women have received a national award for a combined 97 years of helping war veterans.

Drysdale RSL last Friday presented Pam Davis and Colleen Lincoln with the National Certificate of Merit Gold Badge.

Pam joined the Drysdale RSL Women’s Auxiliary in 1967 and held office for 45 years, including stints as president.

“Our RSL couldn’t run without Pam,” Colleen said on Thursday.

“We all owe everything we do to her. She has worked tirelessly for the RSL.” Pam also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 15 years and supports the Royal Children’s Hospital through the Bellarine Uncle Bob’s Club.

Operation City-Safe ran across both weeks of the holidays to “address anti-social behaviour”, Victoria Police said.

The operation had a special focus malls and the Moorabool Street bus exchange, police said.

Several members from Geelong Police Station and Victoria Police’s Mounted Branch worked on the operation over the two weeks.

Gun hunt for coast

By Luke Voogt Police hunting killers who shot dead a 22-yearold Keysborough man in 2017 searched for evidence on the Great Ocean Road yesterday following a new lead.

Investigators this week forensically linked a firearm in their possession to the fatal shooting of Muhamed Yucel on 2 May 2017.

Mr Yucel was shot dead while playing computer games in the garage of a Church Road house about 9.55pm.

Bullets struck the 22-year-old in the chest and he died at the scene.

Two other Keysborough men, aged 23 and 22 at the time of the incident, received single gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.

Police believed the shooting was a case of mistaken identity and linked it to a dispute between outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Forest Fire Management Victoria began burning grass at Eastern View Beach near Lorne about 1pm yesterday to assist police is the search for evidence related to the firearm.

Victoria Police spokesperson Natalie Webster said the burn would clear grass, making it easier for police to search for the new evidence.

But Ms Webster declined to reveal what evidence police expected to find, saying that doing so could compromise the search.

Up to 200 athletes from more than 20 countries would compete at the Australian Open of Table Tennis after Geelong secured the hosting rights for the next three years, City Hall said.

Storages decline The region’s water storages have continued declining despite last week delivering the heaviest rain of the year so far, according to official figures.

Barwon Water reported on Wednesday that the storages were at 51.1 per cent capacity after losing 573 million litres despite recording 49mm of rain for the week.

Cure begins quest for ‘Cancerian’ Phillipa

“I put my malaise down to not feeling well because I was recently widowed,” she said.

The GP referred Phillipa to obstetrician Karl Najjar, who diagnosed endometrial carcinoma.

“My first thought was, ‘Oh my god, how will my daughter cope?’, Phillipa confided” But gynaecologic oncologist Tom Jobling then performed a lifesaving hysterectomy, tell-

ing her she had at least another 20 years to live.

“My daughter said, ‘Really? I’ve got to look after her that long?’,” Phillipa told an 80-plus launch crowd to laughter.

Phillipa and fellow Order of Australia Medallist Helene Bender founded the Cancerians to support research of treatments to increase uterine cancer survival rates.

“I thought as a thank you for being so fortunate to be a uterine cancer survivor that I wanted to give back to the community,” Phillipa said.

Professor Ian Brown, CEO of Australia Cancer Research Foundation, and Prof Jobling also spoke at the event.

Work has begun on building a $5.5 million early learning centre at Highton, City Hall has announced.

Councillors and state MPs helped turn the first sod at Bellaire Primary School on Tuesday as contractors prepared to begin construction of the facility, including a kindergarten for 66 children.

Man in court for dead dad A 40-year-old North Shore man faced court on Wednesday over the alleged murder of 41-year-old father Jason Fry. Police found Mr Fry’s body in the boot of a Holden Commodore on Seaforth Street, North Shore, after receiving reports of a burglary on Sunday morning.

Investigators alleged the North Shore local was murdered on April 9, meaning his corpse could have been in the car for a week before its discovery.

Police arrested a 40-year-old man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, in Lara on Tuesday and charged him with one count of murder.

The accused appeared barefoot and unshaven in the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, according to a Channel 9 report.

The man told the court he had no access to a blood-thinning medication he relies on since his arrest.

He smirked at the media and magistrate, who ordered him to re-appear via video link on 7 September for a committal mention, according to Channel 9.

The man’s lawyer said his client needed medical attention for a possibly dislocated knee and an ongoing heart condition.

The lawyer did not apply for bail for his client. The magistrate remanded the accused in

custody until the September hearing.

Tributes to Mr Fry from friends and family appeared on social media throughout the week.

“You didn’t deserve this uncle Jason,“ his niece Kirra wrote.

“It won’t ever hurt any less than what it does right now, but the memories I have with you will never fade.

“I’ll always watch over your beautiful kids and protect them just like you’d want.“

Tea for 20 as state grant Masters new jobs for Geelong

A Geelong tea brewer has received $750,000, creating 20 new jobs for the city.

Australian Tea Masters director Sharyn Johnston was thrilled to receive the State Government grant.

“It’s really helpful to us,” the Bell Post Hill local said on Thursday.

“We haven’t had any funding before - we’ve built it all (over five years) from one bowl of tea.“ Sharyn returned to Australia on Sunday following the World’s Highest Cupping at Mount Everest.

She flew to Everest Base Camp in an army helicopter, where she sipped tea with other experts from across the world.

Organisers only allowed the brewers to stay at the base camp for three hours due to oxygen shortages at that altitude.

“It was amazing!” Sharyn said.

Sharyn planned to start hiring new workers during the next eight weeks for the company, which already supplies tea to Singapore, Indonesia and Korea.

“It will definitely be a boost for us jobwise,” she said.

The funding will support a new organically certified tea-blending area, training facilities and a warehousing centre in Breakwater.

Sharyn also planned to install a bottling line, conveyor belts, tea-bagging machines, an industrial kitchen and a purpose built tea blender.

The funding would allow the company to expand its business across Asia, Geelong MP Christine Couzens announced at its headquarters on Wednesday.

“It’s great to see Australian Tea Masters investing in Geelong,” she said.

Big contract for our Hope

MODEL STUDENT: Bell Post Hill's Hope Mancer is set for an international modelling career.

By Luke Voogt A 15-year-old from Bell Post Hill has won an international modelling contract after taking out a competition in the UK. Hope Mancer returned home on Wednesday after recently winning the Top Model Worldwide competition.

“It’s the first time an Australian has been in that competition and we took it out!” she said.

The 178cm-tall teen model beat more than 30 women from across the world for the prize.

She started modelling a year ago after best friend Tayah suggested they join Tanya Powell Model Agency together.

“I thought, ‘why not it can’t hurt,’” Hope said.

“They had a course that I did which gave me the confidence - I literately couldn’t have done it without them.

“When I tell people I’m 15 they’re like, ’oh my god that’s crazy!’”

Hope studies at Kardinia College and lives both with her mother in Melbourne and her father in Bell Post Hill.

“They support me in whatever I do, so long I stick to it and don’t quit,” she said.

For Hope the modelling industry is all about working with creative people.

“I love seeing the finished product and thinking, ‘wow that’s a great photograph!’”

She remembers one amusing shoot modelling a bridal dress.

“They got out this massive wind blower,” she said.

“It was the most incredible photo - the dress was just flying everywhere.”

She dreams of being a journalist and a model, but used to think the latter was impossible.

“Even as kid I loved reading and writing,” she said.

Agent Rosetta Stefano said she was “so proud” of the “tall and mature” Hope.

“I put her in (the competition) because she’s super model material - she’ll be a star.”

Anzac Day

Muslim war revelations

By Justin Flynn It is largely an untold story, until now.

Australian Muslims shedding blood and giving their lives in two World Wars for their country's freedom.

Ocean Grove historian Dr Dzavid Haveric has identified about 60 Australian Muslims who fought in World War I and II, and believes there could be more.

"It's an unknown and untold story," he says.

"Their contribution is not explicitly acknowledged. Their contribution is part of Australian National Heritage."

One of these was pilot Moheddeen Abdul Ghias, who the Germans shot down as he was flying his plane in battle over France in 1942.

"Before the plane crashed, Sergeant Ghias steered the stricken aircraft away from the French village of Marly-le-Roi, near Versailles, to avoid falling on the village and any civilian casualties," Dr Haveric said.

Around 100,000 Muslims lost their lives in WWI on the Western Front. A similar number died on the Eastern Front, and yet Dr Haveric says those who fought for the Allied Forces went willingly.

"It was the duty of a Muslim of western society to fight, even against Muslim soldiers - it's obligatory," he says.

"Fathers, sons and cousins went to war to join their brothers in arms with Aussies and Allies.

"For them, defending Australian democracy and freedom was a great honour.

"According to religious interpretation, it was their sacred duty to defend their land, which was their land as well."

So why are the facts not well known?"They were a minority group with different backgrounds," Dr Haveric says.

"Politicians are not even aware of it, which is a sad story."

Dr Haveric said Australian soldiers treated their Muslim compatriots with very little to no animosity.

"They were treated well and they willingly accepted the call," he said.

"They were brothers in arms with Christians and fought against the same enemy.

"The story is unique and it needs to be acknowledged."

Muslim Australians continued to fight for their country long after WWII. They fought in Vietnam and in earlier times, in Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and New Guinea."They were considered as very skilled," Dr Haveric says.

"We now have Muslim soldiers in the Australian Defence Force who take their roles proudly."

Muslim Australian women also played a role.

"When fathers, sons and cousins went to war, Muslim Australian women helped with the Red Cross and in hospitals," Dr Haveric says.

"Their role was no less important."

During Wartime, one Muslim Australian offered 500 of his camels for our troops while another offered 20.

"They prayed for the king, queen and for the success of the British Empire and for the wellbeing of the Commonwealth," Dr Haveric says.

"They established a patriotic fund and gave donations for the Australian defence."

HISTORY: Dr Dzavid Haveric is researching the role that Australian Muslims have played in our defence force and (inset) Moheddeen Abdul Ghias known as 'Bob' Howsan. 179936 Dr Haveric is an author of nine books and is a Research Fellow at Charles Sturt University Centre for Islamic Studies and Civilisation, and Research Associate at the Museum Victoria Humanities Department.

He has worked at the Parliament of the

World's Religions within the Victorian Multicultural Commission as well as at Victoria University.

His forthcoming book would reveal more historical information on Anzac Muslims, he said.

Medal legacy for hero Dr

By Luke Voogt A Geelong doctor who rescued wounded soldiers as shells exploded around him has become the namesake for a local Anzac Day game medal.

Geelong Legacy on Monday named the best on ground medal for the traditional Bellarine Football League Anzac Day game after Kenneth Purnell.

"He'd be thrilled," Kenneth's proud son Alain said at the ceremony.

"If someone needed help he gave it to them and that's why the idea of Legacy appealed to him."

Captain Purnell received the Military Cross for dressing the wounded under heavy shell fire during an Allied attack on the Western Front on 29 September 1918.

He set up stretcher parties and helped them carry the wounded about 1000 metres under heavy artillery and machine gun fire to the nearest dressing station.

"Regardless of his own safety, this officer worked untiringly throughout the day under the most trying conditions and set a splendid example to all ranks," his citation reads.

His war diary ends on 2 September 1918, but exactly a year before his commendation, he documented a bomb raid on his camp the previous night.

He noticed with fear the "unmistakable purring of a Hun plane overhead" before all hell broke loose: "There was a deafening roar and a flash of blinding light, accompanied by a pungent and sickly odour," he wrote.

He and fellow soldiers instinctively fell flat as bomb fragments flew around them.

"I shall never forget the few moments, which seemed like so many years, as I lay there counting the explosions and hearing the pieces fly as the succeeding seven or eight bombs fell close by."

"The first man I found had his back badly broken and was fast dying," he wrote.

"The next I went to was dead, similarly the third and so on ...

"Altogether four were dead, three dying, seven or eight more or less badly wounded.

My groom was badly hit but got off with his life.

"Six of our horses, including my bonza chestnut 'Trixie', were killed."

He escaped death by not being his tent, which he noted was "well knocked about".

In France Captain Purnell met his future wife, Yvonne, a French Red Cross nurse and he returned to Paris in 1921 to marry.

He opened a medical practice in Ryrie Street, where Alain remembered growing up alonside his four sisters.

"He treated a lot of patients even if they couldn't pay," he said. "I think my swimming lessons were a recompense for him. Another bloke used to bring us rabbits."

Dr Purnell became the founding president of Geelong Legacy, before enlisting again in World War II, serving in the Middle East, Greece and New Guinea.

He was a skilled footballer in his younger years, playing in the University of Melbourne's first 18 Australian rules team before the war.

Portarlington and Drysdale will clash during the traditional game next Wednesday with the best player to win the K. C. Purnell Medal.

CEO ‘needs space’

By Luke Voogt Geelong’s lobby groups must give new council chief Martin Cutter “breathing room” before “banging down his door”, according to a councillor.

Anthony Aitken wanted the incoming CEO to first build relationships at City Hall before spending time “with external stakeholders“.

“For the first three to six months, let us get on with our areas of responsibly and priority,” Cr Aitken said.

Cr Aitken was part of the panel that chose Mr Cutter from “40 high-quality applicants”.

“It’s a coup to get a person of such quality to commit to moving to Geelong,” he said.

The fallout from the State Government’s sacking of council in 2016 made being CEO more complex than “needed to be”, which until now had deterred some “good-quality applicants,” Cr Aitken said.

He expected Mr Cutter would "quickly“ review Geelong council’s budget and city plan when he started in early June.

Groups like Committee for Geelong and the city's chamber of commerce could become a distraction for the CEO, Cr Aitken warned.

Mr Cutter would also need to resolve City Hall’s 18-month dispute with its employees over an enterprise bargaining agreement, Cr Aitken said.

“We have to have some stability in our organisation.”

Council voted on Tuesday night to employ Mr Cutter for five years. He will replace the Kelvin Spiller, who vacated the position on 29 March.

City Hall investment and attraction director Brett Luxford will remain as acting CEO until Mr Cutter’s arrival.

Mr Cutter was acting CEO at the City of Melbourne and previously worked in several senior positions in the finance industry.

“It was a very strong field of applicants and the new council is very excited by the prospect of working with Martin,“ Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood said.

DOUBLE TAKE A Geelong man whose art has passed through the hands of every single person reading this died peacefully in the UK this week.

In fact, almost everyone in Australia will be intimately familiar with the work of designer Stuart Devlin, who passed away aged 86.

The Abletts and Amphletts of footy and rock music fame might be Geelong’s most famous names but no other local could equal the reach of the man who designed the charming reverse side of Australia’s decimal coins.

Yes, it was Stuart Devlin who in 1964 created a menagerie of native animals in metal, everything from the cute feather tail glider on the one cent through to the paired roo and emu on the big 50.

The sleek platypus gliding beneath ripples on the 20 cent was Double Take’s favourite.

Many locals would have missed Devlin’s passing but fortunately City Hall was alert, flying its flag at half-mast and issuing a statement of respect to mark the master’s passing.

“Although he spent much of his professional life in London, he always called Geelong home,” said Mayor Bruce Harwood.

“Each of us carries a memento of his work every day in our pockets, ensuring his legacy will live on.”

Indeed. Vale, Stuart Devlin.

While on matters of design, an old bloke in Geelong has undergone something of a spruce up ahead of his 80th birthday.

King George V (right) has hardly looked better since he took up residence as a statue in Johnstone Park way back in the late 1930s.

The actual George V died in 1936 aged 71, but his bronze counterpart has undergone a thorough cleaning and restoration in time for Georgie boy’s birthday on 6 May. The statue was quite a work back in the ‘30s, with sculpture Wallace Anderson spending a year creating the plaster cast in 1937 before shipping it to England for casting because Melbourne lacked a foundry big enough.

From England the cast then travelled to Naples where emerged Johnstone Park George, in a dark bronze finished called ‘Herculaneum’.

From there the statue travelled back to Geelong for its unveiling in October 1938.

Now that for the time was truly a Herculaneum effort!

At the other end of the local design spectrum, a talented local team has invented clothing that tracks the wearer’s movements.

Dr Shayan Seyedin led researchers at Deakin University in engineering “strain-sensing textiles” that convert movements into electrical signals for tracking and recording physical activities.

Dr Seyedin nominated sports and physical rehabilitation as likely areas of applications.

What about prevention? Surely with the “obesity epidemic” this technology should be applied to pants.

Because, as we all know, even the smallest split can lead to a crack!

Family walks for grandpa

By Luke Voogt Brian Griffin's dad Murray "would do anything to help" before he got dementia.

"He was always there when you needed him - even when you didn't - he'd pop up and start helping," Brian said.

So the Grovedale electrician and his family joined the Geelong Memory Walk to give back to their father and grandfather.

"We got the whole family involved last year," Brian said.

"When people should be retiring, enjoying their lives and going on holiday... here he is, stuck in a home unable to look after himself."

The family raised $5081 for dementia support services last year with the help of Murray's old workmates from Geelong refinery.

"Everybody knows someone who's affected don't they?" Brian said.

Brian helped Murray make a surprise appearance at the walk, to the delight of the rest of family.

"I thought, 'bugger it, I'll take him'," Brian said.

"He didn't know what was going on or why there were so many friends and family there, but he had fun and did (some of) the walk.

"It probably made the day even more special for the rest of us."

The family first noticed signs of dementia when Murray was 60.

He would forget words or what he was doing in the middle of tasks, like making coffee.

"Early on he used to get a bit frustrated - he knew what he wanted to say and he knew what he wanted to do but he just couldn't express it," Brian said.

"It sort of started with that and went that way for a long time until he slowly slipped away."

"She had to do all these things that people take for granted - it was like she was looking after a child again," Brian said.

"It was devastating for her - as it would be they've been married for a very long time.

"When she needed to go to hospital she wouldn't because she thought (she had) to look after him.

"It got harder and harder for mum to look after him - so eventually she had to make a hard call and put him in a home."

Brian and the rest of the family regularly visit Murray, who turns 66 later this year.

"He might not know your name but seemingly knows who are - he's always got a huge smile on his face when you come visit him thankfully that hasn't changed," he said.

He fondly remembers taking Murray, an avid Cats fan, and his then four-year-old son

to a preseason game.

"It was the first time the three of us all went together," he said.

While Murray had little idea what was going on, "he was just so happy and proud to get to take his grandson to the football," Brian said.

"That day will probably be one I'll remember for a long time."

Wiping out no longer stops Newtown theatre nurse Emmie Pongase from hitting the waves.

“I love the ocean, it’s a place that I feel at home,” she said.

The 35-year-old single mum recently featured a state-wide campaign encouraging women to overcome embarrassment and get active, thanks to her surfing enthusiasm.

“It’s so challenging for me!” she said.

“Even if I stand up for only a second I feel a real sense of accomplishment.”

Emmie grew up in the Philippines mountain-biking, hiking and skim boarding at the beach.

But as she got older a fear of looking silly prevented her from learning to surf.

Emmie became a mum and immigrated to Brisbane to become a nurse, before moving to Newtown three years ago.

She decided to learn to surf after talking to her friends about it, but as a single mum struggled to find the time.

She was afraid her lack of skill could see her get injured in the surf.

“The first time we were going to do it I was going to wear a life jacket,” she said.

“My friend says ‘you can’t do that you’ll look silly!’’’

After a few surfs at Torquay Surf Beach she realised she could wipe out without being embarrassed.

“People don’t care - they’re doing their own thing and don’t really watch you,” she said.

“While you’re out there waiting for a wave you can just relax on the board ... no-one talks to me, no one calls out ‘Mummy!’ or ‘Emmie do this, do that’ ... it’s so peaceful out there!”

Emmie rides a wave in a television commercial for This Girl Can - Victoria which Vic Health modelled on a similar UK campaign.

According to Vic Health more than 40 per cent of women say embarrassment, intimidation or a perceived lack of skills prevents them from being active.

“I can relate to them,” Emmie said

Every fortnight, children from Torquay Road Kindergarten spend an hour or so at Belmont Grange playing games, doing craft or being read to by residents.

“Not all residents have close ties with their grandchildren, so it is wonderful to have the inluence and of a younger generation at the Residence on such a regular basis.

LETTERS Anzacs would want nukes While generational Anzac Day crowds continue to grow, are the expectations of those who made the supreme sacrifice, or carried the downsides, being adequately shored-up?

The Anzac ethos was and continues to be based on sacrosanct sovereignty, democracy and the rule of law.

But times change and, while Australia's armed forces can provide pivotal ancillary support capability in small wars in distant theatres, that's about the extent of it.

While great strategic stock has been rightly placed for seven decades on the stoic US alliance, would the Anzacs be satisfied with no comprehensive defence fall-back position?

Of course we want to live in peace but in a burgeoning and in some instances authoritarian Asian landscape that requires, as a deterrent, having nuclear capability.

Excuse my impertinence but that would also be the wish of the Anzacs as well as the previously unfairly maligned Vietnam regiments.

Not to be proactive and safeguard the sacrifice and legacy of the Anzacs offers up the continuum of accepting the self-serving global inclusiveness furphy and of living in a fool's paradise.

Knights to remember George and Jane Knight died in 1888 and 1885 respectively and are buried in an unmarked grave.

George was from Bristol and a convict. Jane was an Irish orphan.

In pretty tough times they managed to raise a family of eight that has since led to numerous descendants, most of whom have mainly stayed close to Geelong.

They weren't extraordinary people, just good, ordinary folk.

A rural council fined its citizens for allowing dogs to go unmuzzled, for ducks that wandered, for failing to sweep gutters, and for maintaining backyard compost heaps. The town was Stratford-On-Avon, in the medieval days of the 1550s.

People were fined for playing cards "or any other unlawful games", and for not having their children home by 8pm in summertime.

Ale-tasters haunted innkeepers to determine they were putting "no hops nor other subtle things in their brewing".

So who are we to complain about the use of chainsaws and what we can put in recycling bins? Dear Reader, it has been ever thus.

Questionable process The public may ask questions at Geelong council meetings.

They may submit questions in advance, and have answers in writing.

There are notes for public question time that limit speakers to three minutes or so.

Council's local law provides actually for 10 minutes or more.

The notes are to assist the public but are unworkable and not followed by the mayor.

An included list of misdemeanours ranges from questions "not the business of council", which are not allowed, to "embarrassing", or offensive to council or staff.

Where do these embarrassing discredits of the public end?

I have asked for a list of what is disallowed but it cannot be provided. So how can we know beforehand what is forbidden?

The solution is, if I understand it correctly, that any question may in fact be asked and the mayor then decides what is disallowed, and consequently what ought not been asked.

It's the old Catch-22, a tricky one.

Thus, the "welcome" to visitors at council is a mixed and mitigated one. The notes clearly are only guidance approved for the chair and supplied wrongly to the public.

The correction should not be an addition of explanation but to remove what is unnecessary, unworkable and absurd. The unending list of what can go wrong should rather be a request for courtesy and to address the chair, as in any public meeting, with both honoured by their absence from council notes.

Such a more realistic approach is badly needed.

Fossils' fuel for thought I'd like to present some numbers for the dinosaurs (Letters, 6 April).

Larger electric cars, such as the Tesla Model S, get efficiencies of around 24kwhr per 100km. A 10kW home solar system costs around $10,000, without any form of government support, and will produce on average more than 35kWhr of electricity per day.

This will give the large electric car a daily range of at least 145km.

Another way to look at it is that the same trip would probably use around 10litres per 100km in a petrol-powered vehicle. With petrol at a $1.40 per litre, the fuel cost would be a little over $20 for the same trip.

If a car was driven every day for 145km then the payback time on the solar system would be 500 days, or less than two years.

Most people won't drive every day but that's where electric cars have another advantage: some of the unused power from the Sun stored in the car's batteries can be used to power a house at night, smoothing demand on the electricity grid.

So even if an electric car isn't driven every day the owner will still make a return on their investment in solar, and all of it without any load on the grid.

Guaranteed disaster Federal shadow minister for Energy Mark Butler says that if Labor is elected in 2019 it will probably retain the National Energy Guarantee but legislate to enforce a renewable energy target of 45 per cent.

Why are both major parties pursuing policies which are against the national interest, undermine the economy while at the same time not having any significant impact on the environment? It doesn’t make sense.

Labor’s high-emissions reduction scheme will destroy the economy and lower living standards.

When Liddell and other coal-fired power stations closing in the next seven to 10 years the what-its-name is really going to hit the fan.

Pursuing the Renewable Energy Target (RET) is a gigantic waste of taxpayers’ money.

Australia needs to urgently build more clean coal and gas power stations. Better still, put fracking and nuclear back on the table and stop pussyfooting around with intermittent renewable power.

It’s time politicians at all levels jettisoned any form of renewable energy target and stopped undermining the economy and future employment growth.

Even if Australia went totally green tomorrow the impact on the climate would be next to zilch, according to chief scientist Alan Finkel, so why are we so determined to wreck our own economy with expensive green power?

A war unto themselves The allegations of a Syrian chemical attack against its own people are about as plausible as the WMD allegations against Saddam Hussein were.

It seems the western allies are looking for an excuse to invade Syria, having been mad fans of regime change in that and other, countries for many years. It seems they are growing impatient.

If a war eventuates, and hopefully it will not, that war will be another illegal war, just like Iraq was, by those who waffle the usual incessant inanities about the international rule of law.

Bosom buddies hit GPAC

By Justin Flynn She is Australia's leading lady of musical theatre. He is Australia's leading song and dance man.

Together, on stage, these two stars are shining brightly in their new show, Bosom Buddies, visiting Geelong.

Nancye Hayes and Todd McKenney are good pals and have worked together many times.

In their new show, Bosom Buddies, they reflect on their long stage careers and their life in showbiz.

They sing, dance and reminisce about the lows as well as the highs.

They tell stories never before told and show video footage never before seen. As part of each performance the audience is offered the opportunity to ask the questions they've always wanted to ask.

"We always have a great time in Geelong and the audience is always very supportive," McKenney told the Indy.

"Most of the time regional people have to travel to see a show, so we thought it would be a great idea to take the show to them."

The duo have more than 90 years of experience in the entertainment industry and McKenney said that made for some interesting stories to tell.

"It's moving in parts, but it's mainly funny," he says.

"It's a well-rounded show, but it's mainly a humorous look at our careers."

The show has been playing to standing ovations in NSW before hitting the Victorian border this week.

The pair has a crazy schedule that also involves Tasmania and Adelaide with 40 shows all up.

STARS: Nancye Hayes and Todd McKenney are heading to Geelong for Bosom Buddies.

After Bosom Buddies, McKenney is starring in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

"There's plenty of time to sleep when you're dead," he laughs.

"Initially we were very nervous about it, but the feedback has been amazing.

"We thought we'd look at another way of working together - something a bit more personal."

McKenney said he and Hayes were actually bosom buddies.

"Nancy and I tour very well together," he says.

"Nancy doesn't drive and I love driving so it works well."

The show features a Q&A session, which McKenney says has taken off.

"Q&A is going gangbusters," he says.

"Some of the questions are quite bizarre, like someone asked 'when is Sonia Kruger's birthday?'.

"Trying to figure out what to leave out was the hardest part, after all there's 90 years of stories to tell."

Bosom Buddies comes to Geelong Performing Arts Centre for two performances only, on April 28 at 2pm and 8pm.

Kids chase music glory for 30 years

HELLO WORLD: Tess McBurney (front, second from left) can't wait to sing on Sunday with the Geelong Youth Choir.

She urged aspiring singers, even toddlers, to give the Geelong Youth Choir a go.

"You're never too young to sing," she said. "(The choir) really offers that experience for little kids."

Tess will sing alongside fellow chorists and Melbourne folk band Hello Tut Tut at an international music concert at Club Italia 4pm on Sunday.

The choir helped children enjoy "music for the rest of their lives" whether they chose it as a career or not, musical director Denise Hollingworth said

"Many of our members have grown up singing in the choir, so there is a lovely community feel.

"It's fantastic to see their skills and confidence develop ... to the point where they can pick up a piece of music and sing it at sight, or create their own harmonies to their favourite songs."

Hollingworth encouraged locals to help keep kids singing for "another 30 years" by sponsoring the choir at patreon.com/geelongyouthchoir.

Roguish affair Cabaret diva Anya Anastasia returns to Drysdale on Friday to bring original music, double entendres and cheeky antics right onto the lap of her audience - at times literally.

Anastasia trades lace and ruffles for dinner gowns in her latest show Rogue Romantic, after performing as Marie Antoinette at the Potato Shed last year.

Her fascination with cabaret began when she was 18, and she later taught herself sing.

"I certainly jumped headlong into the burlesque scene without meaning to," she told the Indy last year. "Cabaret is such an indulgent experience. It's just such a wonderful way to connect with the audience."

Anastasia loves an intimate setting like the shed, and entertaining audiences with a bit of "cheeky" comedy.

"There's nothing more addictive than seeing people burst into laughter.

"I think it's a good thing to have this bodypositive attitude. But I really want the core of the work to be words and the story."

She will perform with her all female band of Bec Matthews (drums), Annie Siegmann (Bass) and Laurie Black (keys) at the Potato Shed on Friday.

Lara's Tess McBurney "wasn't nervous at all" when she made her solo singing debut - at age four.

Her mates at the Geelong Youth Choir had her back on stage when she sang a favourite from The Lion King.

"I knew all my friends were behind me and they gave me a lot of support," the 12-year-old said on Tuesday, ahead of the choir's upcoming concert.

"I was Simba and my brother was the bird - it was really fun because we all got a part to sing."

Tess followed her three older siblings into the choir, which has about 60 singers and in 2018 celebrates its 30th year.

"I always looked up to my big sisters and brothers," she said.

"They were singing and I really wanted to get into it because it looked like they were having a bunch of fun."

Now the choir was "like a big family" too, Tess said.

"I like how you can just go there to sing and you don't really have to worry about what other people think. I've been in a few shows and being in the choir really boosted my confidence."

Tess dreams of being a singer when she's older and has already scored a few musical theatre gigs at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

She played a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz and was part of last year's production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Qashqai set on new look

By Derek Ogden The Nissan Qashqai has led something of a double life since its birth a decade ago when it first came Down Under as the Nissan Dualis.

Since then, as well as shedding diesel power and two seats, the Japanese crossover has played the name game, reverting to its original global moniker.

Now, says Nissan, at the bidding of buyers, the Qashqai has been upgraded and the range simplified. Included are grades from the entrylevel ST to mid-range ST-L and top-end Ti. However, because of manufacturing issues at the Nissan plant in north-east England, the Ti has been held back until later this year, being replaced by a special edition N-TEC. Entry to the new Qashqai comes via the ST six-speed manual, priced at $26,490, plus on road costs. A continuously variable automatic adds $2500 to the price.

The Qashqai ST-L comes with CVT only for $32,990, while the N-TEC CVT can be had for $36,490. The Ti CVT, we are told, will hit the market at $37,990 in the middle of the year. On test was a Qashqai ST-L CVT at $32,990.

A facelift includes the latest version of the Nissan V-motion grille, framing the new company badge. The latter is now a completely flat hologram style, which incorporates part of the car’s Intelligent Emergency Braking system, allowing radar waves to pass through it. The radiator grille chrome surround houses the front camera taking in part of the picture for the Intelligent Around View monitor, Nissan’s 360-degree parking system, standard on the ST-L. Flanking the grille are new halogen headlamps, with daytime running lights consisting of nine LEDs (previously six) and a thicker lens, adding a more modern, premium look. Full LEDs carry a new boomerang DRL design, extending right across the top of the lamp.

The bonnet has been reshaped with a straight-line leading edge rather than a curve.

New sharp bonnet creases are the tightest created at a Nissan Europe manufacturing plant.

The front seats have been redesigned on STL, giving additional support and more space between driver and passenger. Seat backs are thinner, giving more legroom in the rear.

The Qashqai makes use of a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine producing 106 kW of power at 6000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at a rather high 4400 rpm.

The entry-level ST features a six-speed manual transmission, the other variants a Nissan Xtronic CVT.

Top results amid blow ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers who found fishable water in last week’s fierce weather reported some fantastic results.

Corio Bay was one of the locations offering protection, with the rocks at St Helens producing pinkie snapper and flathead for anglers fishing bluebait on paternoster rigs. The odd elephant fish was also taken.

Limeburner’s Point fished well for garfish when using a strong berley trail from the rocks. A light float rig with a size 12 longshank hook was perfect when baited with small baits like pippie or silver fish.

Casting soft plastics from boats worked well for anglers chasing pinkies.

The outer wall of Royal Geelong Yacht Club and the Wester Beach mooring area were hot spots.

Down the peninsula, fishing in 6m out from the Point Richards boat ramp during the evenings was ideal for King George whiting. The edge of the mussel beds was also a productive location for whiting along with pinkies and flathead.

Swan Bay’s channel presented reasonable protection from the wind, with silver trevally and whiting keeping anglers busy on the run-in tides.

Queenscliff hosted awesome squid fishing along the main pier and at Bell Reef. Larger 3.5-sized jigs worked best again.

Kingfish were still hanging around The Rip, with the sizes much better than average. Drifting with fresh squid baits our even downrigging was the way to go for anglers who caught some kings over 10kg.

Offshore angling was a challenge but anglers who found a break in the weather caught fantastic numbers of gummy sharks. Large baits like fresh Australian salmon worked a treat on gummies to 15kg.

Plenty of surface-feeding salmon schools were also present offshore, making for great sport.

Freshwater reports slowed, with some of the best fishing coming from Lake Purrumbete where redfin were in taken large numbers. Jigging soft plastics in front of schools worked well.

Stony Creek Reservoir was consistent for brown trout to 1kg, particularly for anglers using pink #55 13.5g Tassie Devils.

Leopold Angling and Aquatic Club hosted a great celebration of the end of Corio Bay netting last Sunday. Plenty of fishos turned out to take part, with even the trying weather conditions unable to turn people away.

Next week’s improving weather should present opportunities to catch elephant fish in the Barwon River estuary or gummies offshore. Freshwater fishos should try Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, which is due to fire up.

Carlton match luck of the Irish for Cat Zach Tuohy will become the third Irishman after Jim Stynes and Tadhg Kennelly to play 150 AFL games when he fronts up against Port Adelaide on Saturdaynight.

Tuohy crossed over to Kardinia Park after a 120-game stint at Carlton.

The 28-year-old running defender is currently leading the AFL for the longest consecutive streak of games with 120.

The Cats returned to form with a big win against St Kilda last Sunday, but Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval is a different proposition.

“It was a pretty good performance, it was the closest representation to how we want to go about it,“ Tuohy said.

“Guys like Zach Guthrie, we could tell pretty quickly he was going to have exceptional leadership qualities. Jack Henry comes in and the steps he’s taken in pre-season are remarkable.

“We’d like to have Harry (Taylor) and ’Hendo’ (Lachie Henderson) back, but the young guys are doing alright I reckon.“ Port Adelaide will be angry after a loss to Essendon last weekend. It was the Power’s first taste of defeat in 2018.

Poor starts have been plaguing the Power.

“Our trend this year is that we’re getting done in first quarters, putting ourselves behind the eight-ball and when we try to get back in the game, we’re not able to,” vice-captain Olli Wines said.

“That’s an issue we have to address - tonight was another disappointing first quarter,

we put ourselves four or five goals down early and at AFL footy [level] these days, it’s incredibly hard to catch up from that.”

Geelong’s win against the Saints was impressive and it also signalled the arrival of Brandan Parfitt as a genuine AFL young gun.

The 2016 number 26 draft pick gathered 28 disposals and booted three goals in a stunning performance.

Geelong drafted the 19-year-old Parfitt with the pick they received from Richmond for Josh Caddy. It looms as a win-win trade for both clubs. Caddy is already a Richmond premiership player while Parfitt looks every bit a 10year player for the Cats.

Meanwhile Cats fans will get the chance to see both VFL sides in action tomorrow.

The VFLW side will play their third practice match in a fortnight when they take on the Western Bulldogs VFLW side from 11.30am at GMHBA Stadium.

Following on from that, the Cats VFL side will take on Footscray from 2pm. The Cats suffered a close loss to Sandringham at home on Saturday and will be looking to make amends.

Entry into the VFLW game is free until 1pm at which point non-members will be charged for entry into the VFL match. 2018 Geelong Cats members will receive free entry.

Silver lining as Jackson walks with medal

By Justin Flynn SILVER: Martin Jackson won a silver medal at the Commonwealth games.

Ocean Grove’s new Commonwealth Games silver medallist was told he would never walk normally again after a freak accident playing American football.

Marty Jackson, an arborist for City of Greater Geelong, allowed himself one day to process his thoughts then immediately set about figuring out what sport he could try next.

Four years after taking up athletics he now has a Commonwealth Games silver medal for the F38 shot put.

“Anything that I’ve taken up I’ve committed 100 per cent to it,” Jackson said.

“My life revolved around gridiron and chasing excellence. They day after I suffered the injury they explained that there was a good chance I might not walk properly again, so I let it sink in and the next day I was looking for something else to focus on.”

A founder of Geelong Buccaneers gridiron club, Jackson was its star player until an accident during a game left him with a knee dislocation that led to partial paralysis of his lower left leg.

“I needed to set a goal to recover,” he said.

“I went from the top of my sport right down to the bottom but self-pity doesn’t do you any favours.”

Jackson’s preparation for the games couldn’t have gone worse. Jackson described his form the week before “horrible”.

“It was the worst performance I'd ever put together.

“I was over-thinking things. There had been times when the mental pressure had gotten to me in the past whereas in team sports it hadn’t.”

A shift in Jackson’s mindset paid off.

“I walked into that stadium knowing this is what I was going to do.

“The first four throws in the Commonwealth Games I couldn’t hear a thing - I was that focussed.”

Jackson said and gold medallist Cameron Crombie were good mates, calling themselves the Shot Put Twins.

“I’m Danny DeVito and he’s Arnold Schwarzenegger,” Jackson laughed.

“It’s been a pretty incredible experience. It was a hugely emotional moment (standing on the dais) and I thought I’d probably fall apart up there.” geelongindy.com.au
