MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I had the pleasure of spending some time with members of the Allora Historical Society for this week's coverage of the Southern Downs Heritage Festival (pages 4 and 5), which kicks off tomorrow night with the launch of a book on St Mark's Anglican Church in Warwick.

Like other groups in the region, the Allora folk are justifiably passionate about their town's unique heritage.

And we as a region should be proud of the role our communities have played in shaping Queensland's history.

Because we live here, we often take our heritage for granted - both our built landmarks and our social history.

For newcomers and visitors it can be a fascinating journey of discovery into what makes this region tick. It's also good to be reminded now and then of the value our heritage has when it comes to luring the tourist dollar to the Southern Downs and Granite Belt.

There's plenty of events on during the Southern Downs Heritage Festival and both locals and visitors alike should take the opportunity to experience them and celebrate our local history.

A big congratulations to the organisers of this Festival - their enthusiasm is infectious and it promises to be a week of highly enjoyable events. ● - Jeremy Sollars

FEEDBACK SOUGHT ON CENTRE PLAN

BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council is seeking public feedback on a proposal to build a new 'multi-purpose centre' in Killarney's Canning Park.

The council has received funding under the State Government's 'Works For Queensland' program so the project would cost local ratepayers nothing.

But some locals have questioned the need for such a facility, given Killarney already has a Recreation Centre a short distance away opposite the Showgrounds.

The 'multi-purpose centre' would include a council customer service desk, library, Wi-Fi Hot Spot and tourist information and could serve as a Disaster Coordination Centre.

If it proceeds it would be built in the north-east corner of the park, adjacent to the Warwick Credit Union Killarney branch, with an existing basketball half-court to be moved elsewhere in the park.

The council is seeking feedback from the community in relation to the use of Canning Park to house the centre, and is also seeking information from members of the community who may have verified knowledge in relation to the historic use of the park land.

Stanthorpe locals have expressed concern at what they say is a lack of consultation by the Southern Downs Regional Council over a potential plan to shift the Stanthorpe Library into the Civic Centre.

The council has engaged Sydneybased consultants Complete Urban to do a feasibility study to "evaluate the use of facilities in the Stanthorpe civic precinct to best meet the needs of the community", as the council said in a statement released last week said.

It is understood the study will look at the option of moving the library in order to expand the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery next door, and that Complete Urban has identified three potential spaces in the Civic Centre for the library.

But many locals have pointed out that the original library was inside the Civic Centre and that the current library was "purposebuilt" in Weeroona Park in the late 1980s to improve public access.

Some on social media have expressed concern about access to the Civic Centre for the elderly and disabled and parking.

It is also rumoured that the move is part of a longer-term council plan to shut down the Stanthorpe council chambers in the Civic Centre and move all of its administration functions in the town to its Warwick headquarters.

It is understood the council also has concerns about backpackers causing congestion in and around the library when

Residents concerned about a proposed solar farm at Sladevale just north of Warwick are being encouraged to attend a meeting with Southern Downs councillors to be held at the Warwick Town Hall at 5.30pm on Monday 14 May. As reported last week, residents of Sladevale and nearby Mount Tabor are furious that their right to object to the proposed 154 hectare solar farm has been stripped from them due to changes to the council's planning rules.

Sydney-based renewable energy firm Terrain Solar applied to the Southern Downs Regional Council in January of this year for approval to install thousands of solar panels on prime cropping land off Freestone Road, bounded by Gleeson and Jensen Roads.

At that time, such a proposal would have been subject to public advertisement and submissions for and against from the public, but the application was placed on hold when the council and the state government asked for more information on aspects of the project.

But in the meantime the council amended its planning scheme - in March to make proposed solar farms in the region only 'code assessable' - which means the Terrain Solar application will be decided on internally by council officers, with no rights of public objection or appeal.

The meeting with Mayor Tracy Dobie and councillors was requested by Sladevale residents and will not be publicly advertised.●

In its statement last week the council said the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery "has provided Council with its five year plan, which indicates its intention to expand and outlines the need for additional space to continue to host first-class exhibitions and to display its collection".

he rich heritage of our region is about to come alive as the 2018 Southern Downs Heritage Festival prepares to get under way.

This year's festival - coinciding with the National Trust's Australian Heritage Week next week - involves 15 community groups and four heritage-based businesses coming together to open their doors, display their collections, put on fashion shows or demonstrate heritage skills with enthusiasm.

The festivities kick off tomorrow night, Friday 20 October, with the official launch at St Mark's Anglican Church in Warwick, which

celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

But the events are many and varied, not the least of which is another 150-year anniversary milestone, namely that of the Allora Courthouse.

The 'Best Little Town on the Downs' will on Monday welcome Queensland's Assistant Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Assistant Minister of State Jennifer Howard, who will open 'Policing and Justice in Allora, Warwick Police District', an exhibition celebrating the Allora Courthouse's 150 years.

The exhibition by the Allora Historical Society was assisted by the Queensland Police Museum, Text Queensland via NLA Trove and Queensland State Archives, and

the minister will also open the council's Allora Streetscape project, P L Travers Park.

The park honours the late Helen Goff, who spent a portion of her childhood in Allora and later created Mary Poppins under the pen name P L Travers.

The minister will be accompanied by Mayor Tracy Dobie and Ross Neale of the Allora Historical Society, and will take a private tour of the Mary Poppins House and open the park and the exhibition, also touring Allora's Fallen Soldiers Memorial Park and Boer War Memorial, the first built in Queensland.

and Police Station on Raff Street.

Just to the rear of the courthouse and police station is the old 'lock-up cell', which Ross Neale told the Free Times was last used in 1989.

"The policeman in charge at the time was Sergeant John Kinbacher, who's now retired," Ross said.

"More recently we've had the secondlongest serving police sergeant in Allora, Kel Timms, who was here for 17 years.

"He's also retired but still lives in the Allora area."

The original Allora Courthouse was built in 1867-68 at the same time as the first Allora State School by contractors Messrs Dodd and Dougall. The two-acre School Reserve faced Herbert Street while the Courthouse on the two-acre Lock-Up Reserve faced Raff Street.

In 1884 the first courthouse was sold to the School of Arts Committee for £14 and removed to its present site at 27 Drayton Street. The School of Arts served the town as a library until 1968 when the Shire Council built a new library adjoining the Council Chambers. In 1970, the building became the Allora and District Historical Museum.

The building remains almost unaltered from its original design.

The original chamfer boards line the interior of the building, although the exposed studs, which were a common feature of early buildings, are now covered by weatherboards. The windows and front door are original. The magistrate room at the rear of the building has its original paint.

The building has been in continuous use for 150 years and is Allora's oldest public building if not its oldest building.

Church turns 150 ...

This weekend, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April, is the celebration of 150 years since the Foundation Stone was laid at the lovely sandstone church which is St Mark's Anglican Church of Warwick.

Celebrations commence tomorrow evening, Friday 20 April with the Southern Downs Heritage Festival Launch and the official launch of 'Living Stones', a beautiful colour book outlining the history St Mark's.

The function at the St Mark's Parish Hall is from 5.30pm and entry is free with a 'Bring a Plate' affair. There will be tours of the church over the weekend and during the following week at 2pm.

Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey AC will attend the Anniversary Celebration Dinner on Saturday night at the Abbey of the Roses.

TROOPER SEEKS THE BLACK BERET As Australia prepares to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I, Warwick's Claire Kelly is embarking on a career of service to her country in the tradition of the Anzacs.

Trooper Kelly is currently completing army training at the Puckapunyal base in Victoria towards gaining the coveted 'black beret' of the Australian Army's Armoured Corps, after completing year 12 at Warwick State High School in 2017.

She recently completed her 12 weeks of recruit training at Kapooka in New South Wales and despite not yet having a driver's licence she's well on her way to operating the Armoured Corps' Abrams tanks - a far cry from driving tractors growing up on the family farm at Tannymorel, although it did give her some familiarity with all things mechanical.

Claire - the second eldest of the four Kelly siblings - could be posted either to Townsville, Adelaide or Enoggera army base in Brisbane and while mum Anne Marie has no illusions about the potential future risks her daughter could face on active service, she's extremely proud of a daughter she describes as "fairly determined" and "somewhat headstrong".

"We're not a military family but Claire has always been into physical fitness - she used to ride her bike all the way from the farm to Warwick High," Anne Marie told the Free Times.

"She knew a couple of fellows from high school who joined the army and she talked to the army's recruitment people at school career expos through year 12 last year.

"She took it all on board herself, booked all her appointments, it was all off her own bat.

"I'm very proud of her but I can see the bigger picture, there's a lot of instability in the world today but this is what she wants to commit to.

"I've always said to the kids I don't care what they do for a job as long as they enjoy it and are content."

Anne Marie and two of her other children, Ethan and Megan, travelled to Kapooka earlier this month for Claire's platoon's graduation 'march out' parade - older sibling Shaun was unable to go due to work commitments - and described the day as

‘FOUND’ DIGGER’S LINKS TO DOWNS One of nine previously unknown World War 1 Australian soldiers who fought in the Battle of Fromelles is France who were formally identified recently has links to Allora and Warwick.

Private James Robert Smith of the 31st Battalion Australian Imperial Force (AIF) died in action during the battle in July 1916 and was among 250 Australian soldiers killed at Fromelles, most of whom were buried in mass graves in an area near the battle zone known as 'Pheasant Wood'.

To date the Australian Army's 'Fromelles Project' has resulted in 159 of the soldiers being identified, with the identities of the other 91 still unknown.

A range of evidence collated by anthropologists, archaeologists and DNA specialists, along with artefacts and historical records, was sufficient for the Army to establish the identities of these latest nine Diggers, including Private Smith.

The soldiers are now buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery at Fromelles.

World War 1 army records state Smith was born in Allora, and initially list his mother as a Jane Smith of East Talgai, but also names his parents as James and Harriet Smith of Percy Street, Warwick.

The records state Smith, a labourer, enlisted in the army at Enoggera in Brisbane

Captured Australian soldiers arriving at the German collecting station on the morning of 20 July 1916 after the Battle of Fromelles. at the age of 23, and saw service in Egypt and in France.

He is listed as having been killed in action on 20 July 1916.

The following is the frank, almost cold description of his death in the Army's records, assumed to have been given to superiors by one of the surviving Diggers 'Informant states that on 20th July 1916 at Fromelles in a charge at 6 p.m., Smith was shot through the heart as they were between the British and German trenches.

Informant went up to him and spoke but he was already dead. The British held the trench until 7 a.m. next morning when they were driven out. Unless the dead had been buried that night they must have fallen into German hands.' ●

WWI EXHIBITS AT COTTAGE The Warwick and District Historical Society is honouring our local World War I heroes with an exhibition in the Eastwell Hall at their Pringle Cottage Museum complex at 79-83 Dragon Street.

The display will be officially opened this Sunday 22 April at 11am, with the Museum open from 10am to 3pm on the day and each day next week.

The display - which represents hundreds of hours of volunteer research - has memorabilia and history relating to the 'Great War', including photos, military documents and interesting stories of many of our local enlisted men and women.

One of the unique pieces on display is an embroidery commissioned by Emu Vale's Edward Joseph Walsh while he was serving in the Middle East in the 18th Company of the Imperial Camel Corps.

Edward was aged 20 years and eight months when he enlisted, on January 18 1916 and was posted to the 5th Light Horse as a Trooper, before being posted to the Camel Corps in Abbassia in Egypt on November 2 the same year.

Edward was hospitalised in Cairo after being wounded in action in November

Warwick researcher Deborah Wheeler recently completed Volume One of the Kyoomba history project, covering the years 1916 to 1935.

Kyoomba was established for repatriated Diggers suffering from tuberculosis (TB) and those who developed lung damage due to the effects of the German gas they encountered while serving in the trenches on the frontline of combat in World War I. Deborah's book was made possible through a $20,000 Queensland Government 'Spirit of Service' grant received by the Stanthorpe RSL Sub Branch, which commissioned the project.

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace this week launched the Labour Hire Licensing Scheme at Rugby Farm at Gatton, saying labour hire workers in Queensland would now have increased protection in a regulated industry where employers will be held to account for doing the wrong thing.

"Our Government is leading the way in the fight to ensure some of our most vulnerable workers are not subject to exploitation and mistreatment," Ms Grace said.

"Labour hire has been an unregulated industry for far too long and, unfortunately, this has meant some rogue operators with scant regard for their obligations have been able to take advantage of employees.

"In the past there have been cases of workers being underpaid or unpaid, being sexually harassed, forced to work ridiculously long hours, housed in crowded, sub-standard accommodation, or exposed to serious risks to their safety.

"In the absence of any action at the Federal level, the Palaszczuk Government has drawn a line in the sand and set up a system which will ensure all stakeholders do the right thing.

"These laws will enhance Queensland's reputation as a great place to work, including for backpackers and migrant workers who follow the seasonal harvest trail around the state.

"Labour hire providers are now required to be licensed in Queensland and businesses

who need to hire labour must only use licensed providers."

Ms Grace said the scheme sets minimum standards for labour hire providers and was established following extensive consultation with stakeholders.

"To obtain a licence, a labour hire provider must demonstrate that they are fit and proper to provide these services, can comply with relevant state and Commonwealth laws and that their business is financially viable.

"Existing labour hire providers have until 15 June 2018 to apply for a licence and can continue to operate while their application is being processed."

VEGETATION MANAGEMENT ‘SCIENCE’ The "unsettled science" around the amount of vegetation growing in Queensland compared to how much is being cleared has led to new calls from AgForce for a rethink of proposed laws that would make it harder for farmers to grow food.

AgForce General President Grant Maudsley this week said the Palaszczuk Government was pushing ahead with harsh new vegetation management restrictions despite admitting they had only examined clearing rates and not regrowth rates.

"Farmers love and care for their land, and need to manage vegetation and regrowth on their properties to sustainably produce the great food and fibre consumers demand," he said.

"The Queensland Government will make it harder for farmers to do their jobs and harder for farmers to create jobs by ramming through flawed laws based on studies that only look at half the picture.

"AgForce has always said we are willing to engage in a science and evidence based

process on this issue, but that means looking at all the facts, including how much vegetation is growing, not just how much is cleared."

Mr Maudsley said AgForce was requesting an independent review of the scientific data around vegetation management, including determining what knowledge gaps existed in the research.

"In addition, former Queensland Government scientist Dr Bill Burrows gave evidence to a recent Parliamentary hearing

that 'any releases of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere as a result of clearing for vegetation management are more than offset by ... grazed woodland thickening'.

"These differing reports highlight why the Palaszczuk Government needs to rethink its flawed laws.

"Enough is enough. We're all in this together. Let's find a long-lasting solution that delivers good outcomes for the environment and agriculture without strangling farmers in red tape." ●

FIRST QUARTER CATTLE MARKET PERFORMANCE The south-east corner of the country has had, for the most part, a very dry first quarter, according to Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

Almost all of NSW, Victoria, eastern SA and parts of southern and central Queensland experienced below average rainfall for the January-March period.

Pasture conditions have deteriorated in these areas, with many producers relying on supplementary feed, and quality of stock is

reportedly starting to show the effects of the dry summer.

National cattle yardings for the first quarter at MLA reported saleyards were 19% higher year-on-year, at close to 682,000 head. NSW and Queensland drove the overall increase, with numbers up 31% and 33%, respectively.

Throughput in Victoria and WA declined 4% year-on-year in both states, while SA and Tasmania were 18% and 47% lower, respectively.

Warwick Showgirl 2018 Sarah Wilson took out the Darling Downs Showgirl title at the Toowoomba Show last Saturday.

Sarah beat 12 other challengers for the coveted title and will represent the region at the Brisbane Ekka in the Miss Queensland Showgirl competition in August, as well as being an ambassador for the Warwick Show at local shows around the region over the next year.

The number of adult cattle processed in the eastern states for the January-March period, as reported by MLA, was 4% higher than the same time last year, but down 9% from 2016 levels.

In NSW, the adult cattle kill for the March quarter was up 7% on year-ago levels, while slaughter throughput in Queensland lifted 2%.

The number processed in Victoria increased 20% year-on-year, while SA levels were down 32%.

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Federal Agriculture Minister and Maranoa MP David Littleproud has come under fire from animal rights groups for ruling out a ban on live exports. Mr Littleproud last week announced what he described as a "short, sharp review of the standards for the sheep trade during the Middle Eastern summer", following the airing of disturbing footage on Channel Nine's 60 Minutes program earlier this month of sheep which perished during a voyage to Qatar and Kuwait last August.

Heat stress in 40 degree-plus temperatures on the vessel Awassi Express caused the deaths of 2400 sheep out of 64,000, representing 3.76 per cent of the total consignment.

Mr Littleproud - and the Federal opposition - have ruled out an end to live exports, saying it would only serve to hurt our producers. Groups including the RSPCA and Animals Australia have voiced their demands for a live export ban since the airing of the footage, shot by an officer-turned-whistleblower on the Awassi Express in August last year and given to Animals Australia.

FROM LIVE EXPORT FOOTAGE CONTINUES The departmental review announced by Mr Littleproud - who has been minister for just a few months - was expected to take four weeks, to allow any recommendations to be acted on before sheep are sent to the Middle Eastern summer, starting in June, from Australia's winter.

"This will be a short, sharp review looking into the standards of the northern summer trade give confidence in those boats and the standards in which those sheep go to the Middle East," Mr Littleproud said last week.

"I've asked Dr Michael McCarthy, a preeminent vet who has experience in the export industry, to undertake that review.

"I spoke to Dr McCarthy this morning and he believes he'll be able to get that done well within the timeframe because of his experience in the industry and researching it.

"It's important we take decisive action because it's the livelihoods of farmers and their families at stake.

"It'd be great if the live export industry led on this issue and had already taken strong action by the time this review comes back.

NOT ISOLATED INCIDENT Department of Agriculture records show there

have been 30 'reportable mortality incidents' during Australian live export voyages - both by sea and by air - since 2006, involving sheep, cattle, goats and buffalo.

The majority of the incidents have involved cattle being exported by sea and air to Asian destinations.

One of the worst incidents involving sheep was in August 2013 when 3256 sheep, or 5.53 per cent of the total consignment, perished during a sea voyage to the Middle East from heat stress.

Summer in the Middle East is from June to August, with top daytime temperatures in locations such as Qatar in the Persian Gulf averaging above 40 degrees.

The average maximum in Qatar in April is 33 degrees.

Live export 'mortality incidents' become publicly reportable when deaths in individual consignments are over certain thresholds set by the Department of Agriculture - 2% for sheep, goats, camels and deer, 0.5% for cattle and buffalo on a voyage of less than 10 days, and 1% for cattle and buffalo on a voyage of more than 10 days. ●

MELROSE STATION THE BACKDROP FOR PICNIC DAY Picnic baskets, colourful kites and the chilled tunes of a jazz band will bring the rolling green hills of Killarney to life in the Southern Down town's second annual Picnic Basket Day this Sunday 22 April, from 10am to 4pm.

NEWS ARSON HEARING

The status of a wind farm project in the Stanthorpe area remains unclear with the firm backing the plan refusing to answer specific questions from the Free Times.

Brisbane businessman Tim Lucas gained approval in 2016 for six wind turbines on his 'Rabbit Ridge' wind farm site in the Dalveen-Pozieres area but is understood to have sold the project to Melbourne-based and Chinese-owned energy company Goldwind, while retaining ownership of the land.

In February Goldwind confirmed it had taken over the project but has consistently refused to provide details of the timeframe for starting work on site, and how it intends to communicate with locals.

A Goldwind spokeswoman in February said the company was "currently exploring opportunities to deliver the Rabbit Ridge project and contribute to achieving the 2020 renewable energy target".

This week the same spokeswoman yet again told the Free Times Goldwind's response to the enquiry "has not changed since your previous enquiry".

The firm's website makes no reference to the 'Rabbit Ridge' site.

Residents of the area objected to the wind farm plan on the basis of its visual appearance, noise from proposed backup generators and the potential for the turbines to interfere with aerial firefighting.

Construction is now underway on Australia's largest wind farm - on the Darling Downs between Kingaroy and Dalby - at AGL's Coopers Gap site.

A man charged with arson in relation to a fire which largely destroyed a Warwick residence on the morning of Saturday 21 October last year is due to face a committal hearing on Monday 28 May. Timothy Guy Clift, 29, had his matter mentioned in the Warwick Magistrates Court on Monday of this week, with the committal hearing expected to determine if there is sufficient evidence for him to stand trial over the arson charge.

Clift was arrested a short time after fire tore through the residence on the corner of Wood Street and Stewart Avenue, next to Roses Chinese Restaurant, shortly before 9am on the day.

Firefighters arrived quickly on the scene, but the timber dwelling was well alight and was internally gutted, with the fire crews ensuring the blaze did not spread to neighbouring properties.

The occupants of the home were a 55-year-old woman - who had lived in the home for the last seven years - and her son, along with another resident who had been living there temporarily for a few days.

None of the occupants was in the home at the time.

PASS ON DAMAGE Security cameras and vandalised glass panels in the Billy Day Underpass beneath Wood Street in Warwick are to be replaced, months after the damage was first reported on by the Free Times.

In addition to the Cameroonians who went missing from the Games Village last week competitors from Rwanda, Uganda and Sierra Leone in Africa are also unaccounted for at the Village.

Ian Natherson from Ready Migration in Southport said many of the missing athletes could be eligible for either student or 'distinguished talent', but would not confirm if any of the athletes reported missing were among those who have contacted his office.

The missing athletes' visas are believed to be due to expire on or around May 15.

The Cameroon Commonwealth Games contingent spent nearly three weeks in Warwick in training and preparation leading up to the Games.

Mayor Tracy Dobie told media this week that should any of the missing Cameroonians turn up in Warwick they would "be given a cup of tea and then the authorities would be notified".

cameras are the responsibility of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) despite the department's refusal late last year to confirm or deny this was the case, and even if the cameras were working, connected to a network and monitored.

Locals raised safety concerns about the Underpass last November, including extensive damage to the lifts and balustrades and if the cameras were actually operational and able to record footage in the event of an incident.

The Underpass provides access beneath the highway for pedestrians and students, particularly those from the split campus of St Mary's School.

A DTMR spokeswoman told the Free Times this week the vandalised glass panels will be replaced by the end of June with "perforated metal panels".

"The security camera system is being upgraded including an additional two cameras," the spokeswoman said.

"The community is encouraged to report vandalism or any suspicious behaviour to their local police station or anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

THE SPIN

GAMES TICKED OFF THE 'BUCKET LIST' The curtain came down on my volunteering stint at GC2018 last Friday. It was certainly all and more than I expected - a great experience and one more thing ticked off the bucket list.

I was fortunate to join "Team Caslick" at the Rugby 7's and got to ride the highs and disappointments of an athlete's inner circle over the three days of competition.

Among a number of firsts for me, this was my first experience of live Rugby 7's and while it is a great sport to watch on television it is simply spectacular and to watch .live.

The skills of some of these players are extraordinary and I have to say that Charlotte Caslick throws the sweetest football pass you could wish to see. Many an NRL player would love to have her natural skills.

It is unfortunate that the closing ceremony was such a disaster and the criticisms it has drawn were certainly well deserved. While the ceremony didn't celebrate the athletes in the manner they deserved, I hope it is not the memory that everyone holds on to from what was otherwise a stunning Commonwealth Games.

I don't just mean the amazing medal tally and success of the Australians but the event as a whole. Among all the great moments we got to celebrate and marvel at the achievements of our Para athletes in a way we never have before. How special are these people - true champions and inspirational leaders. Kurt Fernley I am sure would be a shoo in for PM streets ahead of anyone after his on field performances and the grace, dignity and common sense approach he brought to the closing ceremony debate.

Of course while I was slumming on the Coast wrapping up my couple of weeks my partner in Spin flew the coup straight to Randwick for Day Two of the Championships. More particularly the Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes and to be able to say she saw the Mighty Winx equal Black Caviar's 25 race winning streak and rewrite racing history as the only mare to win back to back Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

It was an electrifying performance as the champion came from last to first and thrashed a top class field that was according to some pundits going to test her.

Obviously Winx doesn't read the racing reports.

She is however simply magnificent. The darling of the turf, with a cool $19million in earnings will now take a holiday and hopefully return for a record Cox Plate tilt in the spring.

Someone I know is already booking tickets almost as meticulously as Chris Waller is planning Winx's spring campaign.

- Casey TEARS FOR DIAMONS AND PEARLS Two of the glamour teams of Australian Women's sport were left shattered after suffering losses in their gold medal games on the final day of the Commonwealth Games.

There were plenty of tears at Robina Stadium as the Pearls were forced to settle for the silver medal in their final game against New Zealand after the game went into extra time.

much of the match without their game breaker Charlotte Caslick sidelined with a concussion.

It was a most devastating defeat for the Pearls who their fair share of chances to claim the gold but fell agonizingly short with each attacking raid at the death.

The two teams went end-to-end for the entirety of the five minute period but it was a 75 metre Kelly Brazier try which sealed the result.

New Zealand spoiled the Aussie's party scoring a golden point try to claim gold in an absolute thriller.

Further up the road at the Coomera Stadium the Diamonds were left shattered when the English came up Roses shooting a penalty after the fulltime siren to steal the match 52-51.

The Diamonds were unbackable favourites to win gold after thrashing the Silver Ferns in their previous game and were looking to become the first team to celebrate a gold medal win at home.

Unfortunately for the Diamonds and their fans their hot form deserted them in the final and while they did not as their captain Caitlin Basset, said after the final play bad netball was not their most glittering performance.

The Diamonds took a four goal lead into the final quarter but could not convert that to a gold medal win.

It was the fairytale finish that no one saw coming for the Roses.

Despite the disappointment of their final game losses both Australian teams both teams stood proud with their silver medals.

THE SLIPPERY SLIDE CONTINUES FOR TIPSTERS The Bunnies ensured most NRL tipsters got round six off to a slow start when they gave the hot favourites the Roosters a 26-14 wakeup call.

You would expect that six rounds in to the competition we would be seeing some consistency however the only constant seems to be inconsistency.

The Dragons are one of the few teams bucking that no- form trend and at no time looked threatened against the Sharks.

Melbourne brushed aside their below par performances to serve the Knights a reality check.

The Broncos stepped up to the plate just as many, myself included were ready to write them off. Of course from past experience tipsters should know that is a perilous move.

Brisbane looked to be facing an uphill battle when Matt Gillett and Kodi Nikorima were late withdrawals for the Mt Smart Stadium clash but the new halves pairing of Anthony Milford and Jack Bird brought the Warriors crashing back to earth after their winning streak. It also silenced plenty of Broncos and Bennett critics and claimed more than a few tipsters scalps.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys there was no sweetener to their horror start to the season going down to the Doggies in a poor performance at home. Coach Paul Green this week signed with the club for the next three years - Hopefully with that matter now settled the NQlanders might find the trail back to the winners circle. Well done to the Doggies who have been threatening.

The Raiders made a meal of the Eels and put a smile on Ricky Stuart's face at least for one week.

Bidding a fond farewell to Borobi at the end of the Games. the referee failed to stop play when Titan's Mitch Rein went down with a suspected neck injury during the game. A bad blunder by the referee which left the Titan's coach understandably fuming.

The Tigers served up a good dose of energy and enthusiasm to the Sea Eagles on their home patch. Sea Eagles fans are not accustomed to losing at home and showed their contempt for a below par performance.

The Tigers notching up their first win at Brookie since before Benji Marshall's debut and that wasn't just the other day. There is plenty of growl and strike power left in the Tigers this season.

This week it is back on the carousel for tipsters.

Unfortunately for Doggies fans the Roosters are not likely to take their loss last week lying down and will be looking to crow again at ANZ on Thursday night.

The Warriors are another team who will be seeking redemption after a home defeat but may find the magic Dragons have too much puff at Mt Smart.

The Broncos have a tough assignment after their win. Stormy conditions forecast for their clash at AAMI Park and a nightmare for tipsters.

The Bunnies showed glimpses of their best last week and should hop away with a win over the Raiders on their visit to the Central Coast.

Another tough one for tipsters - can the Knights regroup after their loss to Melbourne or will they become another kill for the Tigers? - I think Tigers fans will be purring after the match which is being played in Tamworth The Cowboys take on the Titans and surely a win is overdue. They may get run out of town if they go down to the Titans.

Time to get back in the winner's saddle.

The Sea Eagles must make amends after a horror couple of weeks. Up against the Eels at ANZ on Sunday surely they must be a good thing.

The Sharks will blood some youngsters when they take on the Penrith at Shark headquarters. Might not be enough to stop the Panthers in their tracks MISSED BY THAT MUCH Allora's Matthew Denny fell agonisingly short of creating a slice of history last

week when he was beaten to the bronze medal in the discus by Cypriot Apostolos Parebothllis.

After claiming silver in the hammer throw earlier in the competition Denny was attempting to be the first Australian athlete since 1938 to medal in both the hammer and discus.

Denny's final throw of 62.53m not quite enough to reel in the Cypriot who threw 63.61m.

Denny who finished fourth in the event can be well proud of his efforts at the games.

Fellow Australians Mitchell Cooper (60.40m) and Benn Harradine (59.92m) finished fifth and sixth respectively MALLET MEMBERS HOST FRIENDSHIP DAY The Stanthorpe Croquet club and players are hosting a Friendship Day this Thursday (April 19) and will be hosting visitors from clubs in Warwick and Toowoomba. There will be several forms of the game played during the day including Association Croquet, Golf Croquet and Ricochet games.

The club will have the use of the Stanthorpe Bowls club greens to accommodate the visitors in what is sure to be a great day. If you would like to learn more about the different disciplines of Croquet why not call in and catch some of the action.

COURSE SUITS STEELE Following the early morning storm on Sunday the Stanthorpe course played well Sunday afternoon as Sporters enjoyed the unfamiliar later tee off time.

Tony Steele obviously enjoyed the conditions and the later start and finished the round ahead of the rest with Paul Armstrong finishing in the runner up position. Sam Dowie finished the round with the Best Gross score and snapped up the Pro Pin. Aaron Simmers claimed the Pin Shot on the 3rd third.

Jim Mitchell and Cody Leotta did not go home empty handed each winning a meat tray.

VARIETY OF FORMATS POPULAR There is plenty of variety on offer for the Mallet Sports enthusiasts.

Last week there was a good roll up for the Association Croquet games in Stanthorpe.

Val Richardson and Pat Schnoor went head to head with Andrea Denkewitz and Sharyn Roser. Schnoor had two breaks of three hoops in succession as she and her partner went on to score a comfortable 25-19 win.

Meanwhile Jenny Tunbridge and Effey Russell took on Peter Tunbridge and Val Shephard. In a very close match it was thee Tunbridge Russell pair that finally took the honours 19-17.

In the third match on the court Joy Newman and Grace Howard played an entertaining singles match. Joy Newman played well to score the maximum 26, taking out the game 26-11.

Thursday morning the Ricochet group hit the court. Margaret Dickenson was partnered by visiting player, Kara in a game against Sharyn Roser. Sharyn scored a convincing 24-18 win in this game.

In the remaining game had Andrea Denkewitz and Peter Tunbridge played John Draper. Denekwitz had consecutive breaks of three helping she and Tunbridge to a 25-19 win.

Gateball has been attracting good fields each week and last Friday triples matches were played. Team One, John Draper, Andrea Denkewitz and Joy Newman played Pat Schnoor, Les Williams, and Sharyn Roser, Team Two who opened their account with an 11-8 win. In a return game they nailed another win with the scores 14-11 in the second game.

They continued with a 16-9 win over Team four, Heather Widderick, Jenny Tunbridge and Val Fancourt and finished the day with a second win over team 4 (1710) to finish the day undefeated.

Margaret Dickenson, Kara, and Bill Golding formed team three and had a narrow 9-8 win over team four in their opening game. In their next game they suffered a 10-9 loss to Team three. In game four they fell 17-9 to the same opponents but bounced back in their final game with a 16-10 win over Team One. FAMILIAR FACES BACK ON THE COURSE Stanthorpe golfers were joined by a group of visiting players from API golf as well as some familiar faces. Don Spencer who now plays with City Golf Club, Dylan Barraclough (Brisbane GC) and Andrew Leigh from Mt Gambier were all back\k on familiar territory.

Runner up was Ian Pickering who survived a count back with Brendon Barker after they both returned 39 points.

Madeline, Jarman returned best score of 35 points in the ladies competition. As sponsor of the day's play she passed on accepting the prize for the day allowing Neta Thouard to take first prize with 33 points and Helen Jones to accept runner up, after a count back with Jennifer Sparkes after the pair both on 32 points.

Darryl Boekholt, Mark Hendry and Keith Allen took pin shots at three, 12 and 17 respectively. Sponsor, Madeline, did collect the ladies pin at three and Racheal Hendry had best approach at 17.

Pro-pins went to Alan Kerr at 1/10, Ian Harvey at 5/14 and Brendon Barker at 9/18, men's winner.

In the run down, it was a ball to scores of 37 and better for the men and 29 and better for the ladies.

COWBOYS MESSAGE The Warwick Cowboys sent a strong message to the 2018 TRL teams last weekend when they scored an impressive come from behind win over thee Gatton Hawks at Cahill Park.

The win keeps the Cowboys in the top end of the table and on equal points with Highfields, Valleys and Wattles.

After Joe Fuimaono opened the scoring for the Cowboys they conceded two tries before Craig Donn scored late in the first half. The Cowboys went to the half time break trailing 12-10.

The Hawks put the visitors under pressure immediately after the break when Clifford Brown scored to take back the score to 18-10.

From that point the Cowboys scored a succession of good tries.

Tries from Ben Sullivan and Josh Cruice saw the Cowboys take a 22-18 lead and they were never headed.

The hot conditions were taking a toll on the big men but Cowboys Darren Pettiford worked hard all day as his side dominated in the second half.

Winger Declan McLoughlin was impressive scoring a treble as the Cowboys powered their way to an emphatic 38-22 win. Captain Mick Bloomfield kicked five conversions and led from the front.

Bloomfield must surely have come to the attention of the selectors for the upcoming 47th battalion rep games. It was an emphatic away win for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys suffered losses in the other three grades played.

The Revere Grade side went down 2220 in a close game. The Under 18's were beaten 38-20 and the second division also suffered a 4-16 loss.

On Saturday the Cowboys face another tough test when they host Valleys at Fr Ranger Oval in all grades. Kick off for the A Grade game is set down for 6.30pm.

In front of a big crowd the Warriors were brought back to earth with a 34-12 score line.

Valleys fullback Dylan Chown earned himself the TRL Hutchies Player of the round for his impressive performance for the Roosters. No surprise really as he scored three tries and kicked four goals scoring 20 of the Roosters 34 points.

The two sides were undefeated prior to the round four clash and the Roosters got away to a blistering start and led 16-nil just before the break. Braydon Wilson got Wattles on the board just before half time but Valleys were certainly in a commanding position leading 16-6. Wattles were missing key players due to injury and other commitments and it showed on the scoreboard.

In the second half Valleys turned on the blow torch scoring three unanswered tries.

Valleys defence was rock solid turning back attacking raids from the Warriors.

Things certainly did not improve for Wattles when centre Brayden Wilson suffered a leg injury and had to be helped from the field midway through the second half.

Wattles scored a consolation try just minutes from full time when Nick Van Der Poel crossed for a four pointer. Captain coach Travis Burns nailed his second conversion for the day taking the final score to 34-12.

Despite the loss Burns was impressed with the way some of the younger players who stepped up to fill the gaps and shows there is some depth of talent in the club.

In other games Valleys had a 20-16 win in Reserve Grade and a 40-6 win in the Under 18's Wattles face another tough assignment when they return to Platz Oval on Sunday to host the competition leaders the Dalby Diehards.

A fine day ensued after a bleak and windy start giving the shooters a challenging morning. Dave Taylor recorded an excellent score to take first place in his class, with Kevin Jones winning his class, well done. Visitors Dan and Dale enjoyed their visit and are keen to return again. Next Sunday 22nd April we will be holding our Anzac memorial 303 shoot at the 300 yard mound. This will be a shoot for all those old 303 warhorses, so drag your three o"s out of the safe and come along and enjoy some friendly competition. You will need 32 rounds of ammo and all shooting will be done with just a sling for support and you can sit, kneel or be prone. PREMIER DARTS Last Saturday the Premier Darts played in Beenleigh for the Friendship of Darts Shield.

As current holders of this shield, the team was motivated to put on a good performance.

Some great darts were thrown but the team of Meakin Park were winners at the end of the day.

Highlights of the day were high scores of Warren Young of 177 and high pegs of 118 by Warren Young & high peg of 110 by Mark Brunt.

Also few 180's been thrown by Premier players: Clive Rudduck, Kyle Brodrick and Guyanna.

Unfortunately Guyanna's was in warm up and does not count, but she is one of the clubs promising talents. Thanks for Julianne of Beenleigh for playing for our team, she was a great asset. All had a wonderful time. ●
