Mr Yakkerboo will bring his toothy smile to the streets of Pakenham on the weekend when the annual Yakkerboo Festival comes to town.

The fun kicks off at Bourke Park late Saturday afternoon with a carnival and food truck festival. Local band Static Society will perform before fireworks light up the night sky at 9pm.

On Sunday Mr Yakkerboo will lead the parade of floats through the centre of Pakenham. There is also a Sunday morning market, roaming entertainment and raffles. For a full program and map turn to page 6 of this special wrap.

Crowds join festival fun

By Michael Porter, President Of The Yakkerboo Festival Committee Well, here we are again, the 43rd festival since it all started in 1976.

And as the area grows, so too do the crowds that attend Yakkerboo.

For newcomers to the area wondering what the Yakkerboo Festival is, the easiest explanation is to say it’s like a mini Moomba. We have a cavalcade of unique vehicles, a parade with decorated floats, a market, a carnival and fireworks.

The committee does its best to continue to put on an event that’s affordable for families; however, it isn’t easy as we rely heavily on sponsors and a grant from the Cardinia Shire.

This year we are very excited to have O’Connors Abattoir sponsor the fireworks on Saturday night (21 April) and will take place near Bourke Park at 9pm. They are usually an expense that we struggle to meet each year, so to have them sponsored is fantastic and we thank Matt O’Connor so much for his generosity.

This year we are encouraging even more families to attend the Saturday night festivities. We have booked a young local band to play in the sound shelter, as well as food trucks and stalls.

So come on down, have some dinner, have a few rides at the carnival and listen to music before the fireworks.

On Sunday we have a record number of market stalls with over 100 stalls set to feature in Main Street, Station Street and Bourke Park. The variety of stalls is the best we’ve ever had so there should be something for everyone.

This year we have Animals on the Move with their mobile animal farm which is sponsored once again by Pakenham Produce and Saddlery - we sure do appreciate their continued support.

They all put in such a huge effort to bring this festival alive and I appreciate everything you all do. Thank you so much for volunteering your time for this fantastic family festival.

Night of fun

Ready to rock out Local band Static Society is set to kick off Yakkerboo in spectacular style during the festival's Saturday evening celebrations.

The group, who features Pakenham resident's 15-year-old bass guitarist Joshua Owen, 14-year-old guitarist Riley Wade and 14-yearold Tooradin drummer Lochie Van Der Valk, will hit Bourke Park's sound-shell at around 6pm and will be entertaining crowds with a number of well-known hits from bands such as Green Day and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Having met at Kooweerup Secondary College little over two years ago, the talented trio came together following a class project and have remained together ever since.

"We were all in the same class and became friends through our interest in music," Josh said.

"In second semester (last year) when we started our music class we had to make a band.

After, we just stayed together and figured we could do some other stuff as well."

Despite only being together 10 months, the band oozes remarkable natural ability. Admitting they take a lot of influence from music icons such as The Beatles, the group not only preform covers but also dabble in writing their own lyrics and music.

And when they're not rehearsing in their school's music room, the group are hanging out and practicing in Riley's garage, which has been transformed into an incredible music room.

"I enjoy messing around because we are all friends and we look forward to playing in front of an audience and writing our own songs," Riley said.

"It's great to have two great friends that share similar talents," Lochie added.

And while the trio has their Yakkerboo set

"We're really looking forward to just getting out there, getting experience and (exposure) and hopefully we'll be able to pick up a few more gigs as well," Josh said.

"But we don't really have a main vocalist at the moment; we did for a small period but we're kind of just in a grey area where we're sort of sharing it together.

"So if there are any vocalists out there, hit us up!"

The Saturday night Yakkerboo celebrations are back and bigger than ever.

Kicking off at around 5pm, families are invited to head on down to Bourke Park on Saturday 21, where there will be a range of activities and tasty treats on offer.

Yakkerboo President Michael Porter has worked with the festival team to prepare the traditional carnival and fireworks, as well as introducing the new additions of local band, Static Society, and nine assorted food trucks.

"Previously, Saturday night has really just been the fireworks and the carnival," Michael said.

"So what we're trying to do is encourage more people to come down earlier and to make more of a night of it.

"They can come on down, have some dinner, listen to some music, have some rides then watch the fireworks at 9pm."

Similar to previous years, carnival-goers will be able to purchase a $5.00 wristband that will allow them unlimited access to three fantastic rides, while toddler rides will once again be free.

"The festival is still really affordable and that's huge for the committee," Michael said.

"That's why we fundraise and do our sausage sizzle and seek sponsors - so we can put on family affordable festival - and that's really important to us."

Pakenham band Static Society is set to put on a show from the Bourke Park Sound Shell at 6pm, while a variety of food trucks are sure to have something to meet the fancy of every diner.

"We didn't want to get just fried food; we wanted to get a range of cuisines," Michael said.

"We've tried to get a variety - no double ups.

And we've also got some desert vans - so we've got both ends of the scope - everything's covered!"

Students head out Cardinia Primary School is once again preparing to dazzle the Pakenham community with their annual Yakkerboo float.

The school has been involved with the festival for over 15 years and as teacher Michelle Henson explained, they plan to be involved for many more years to come.

“Yakkerboo is a fun experience for our students and staff,” Ms Henson said.

“Our school has always enjoyed being part of the wider community and we encourage our students to contribute and support these events. Yakkerboo provides a great opportunity for the whole school community to become involved in something.

“We have students, teachers and parents busy making decorations and deciding on costumes in the weeks leading up to the parade each year. It provides a great opportunity to focus on something together.”

Ms Henson explained that the students look forward to participating in the parade and will this year be creating a safari themed float.

“So far they’ve made a lot of leaves and vines to decorate the truck. The rest will be a secret; you’ll have to watch the parade to see the final product!” Ms Henson said.

Each year the younger students of Cardinia Primary ride on the float and enjoy the chance to become a ‘star’ in the parade. The school’s senior students arrive early to help with lastminute float decorating and helping the younger students onto the truck.

The older students are also part of the parade, with some choosing to ride on the truck and others walking in front carrying the school banner.

“I think it’s a great celebration for our community,” Ms Henson said.

Cardinia Primary School has been involved with Yakkerboo for over 15 years.

nity. The rides and fireworks on Saturday night will set the scene for the parade, market and rides on Sunday. It’s a wonderful weekend of fun for the whole family.”

The 2018 Yakkerboo Festival is set to see a record number of market stalls line Pakenham's Main Street, Station Street and Bourke Park.

Near on 100 stalls will take over Pakenham throughout Sunday's Yakkerboo celebrations.

President Michael Porter promised market-goers that there will be a wide range of goodies on offer from a number of local and neighbouring artisans.

"We've got a huge range of items that will be available, from candles, toys, lots of food, books, home-made products and crafts," Michael said.

"A few organizations like child centres are also getting involved with information stalls.

"A lot are locals but not necessarily all of them and there are a lot of new stalls this year which is great."

It’s Yakkerboo baby!

The Yakkerboo festival has spent more than 40 years creating memories for local residents.

But for Pakenham couple Ivy and Adam Tucker, the annual celebration holds an extraspecial place in their hearts after Ivy went into labour following a day spent at the festival.

"It was our second Yakkerboo in 2008 and we walked around the market all day. It was 40 degrees and the day before my due date," Ivy explained.

"That night I went into labour and had a boy (Addison). So he's a Yakkerboo baby and he loves it. We take him every year.

"But they do say you can go for a walk (to

induce labour) and it definitely worked!"

Ivy first experienced Yakkerboo when she and Adam moved from Dingley in 2006. With Ivy having originally moved from the United States and Adam having grown up in Colac, the pair was quickly taken by Pakenham's community feel - something that Yakkerboo helped create.

"It's just a really good community festival," Ivy said.

"We moved to Pakenham in 2006 and went to the parade in 2007 for the first time, which was before we had kids just to have a look. We were still new to the community and we were really warmed by the fact the festival made it

feel like it was a tight-knit town. Having come from Dingley, which can be isolating at times, it was nice to be in a warm vibrant space."

Over a decade on, Ivy, Adam and their two children Addison (9) and Emmy (7) are still enjoying the local festival and work to celebrate Addison's birthday around the Yakkerboo celebrations.

"Pakenham has grown so much since we've lived here," Ivy said.

"We've been here 12 years but it's still managed to maintain that same sense of community. (Yakkerboo) might seem silly to some, but the kids just love him and I just think it's really nice."

Working on business ideas you need to promote locally?

It just wouldn't be Mr Yakkerboo's birthday without his traditional Great Australian Bakehouse cake.

For years now, The Great Australian Bakehouse owner Lyn Mclatchie has been helping Pakenham celebrate Mr Yakkerboo's special day with the store's famous chocolate mud cake - and this year won't be any different!

"I grew up here and I was involved in Yakkerboo when I was 18; I was actually one of the princesses," Lyn said.

"I lived in Tynong - so I was the Princess of Tynong - and I've just always loved it. Now that we've moved back here and have got the shop we've become involved again."

As per tradition, Lyn and her team will be dressed to the nines in their 'zoo' themed outfits throughout this year's festival, and for the young artists of the region, the store's windows will once again be lined with the festival's colouring in competition entrants.

"It's a fabulous day; everyone's happy and if it's a sunny day everyone's out and about," Lyn said.

"I'm actually sad for those who don't get involved because it's such a good community day!"

Mr Yakkerboo's cake will be cut at 2.30pm on Sunday 22 April.

Yakkerboo's long journey Crowning the Queen of Yakkerboo.

The float parade has a rich history in the Yakkerboo festival, dating back to the first festival in 1976. sketched a design, which was later taken to welder Norm Lemin, who brought Mr Yakkerboo to life in 1978.

Yet while he was created through the efforts of local community members and school children, Mr Yakkerboo is a creature that few can definitively describe. Said to combine the features of a horse, giraffe and platypus, his mysterious nature is emphasised in his question mark shaped tail.

But in April 1995, two days after celebrating his birthday, tragedy struck as Mr Yakkerboo

was destroyed by fire while stored at the Pakenham racecourse. Following the loss, a public appeal was held to assist in funding a rebuild, which promptly saw the mythical creature put back together in time for the following year's festival.

Yet it wasn't the last time Mr Yakkerboo was to be remodelled, having received a rebuild from David Tucker in 2016, whose talents lay in the fields of both engineering and fabrication fields.

explained to the Gazette in 2016. "I wanted to rejuvenate him a bit."

Totalling around $2500 in materials alone, Mr Yakkerboo was stripped down to his frame before David, wife Lisa, son Cody and mate Terry Arnold used chicken wire, lycra, plaster and fibreglass to ensure Yakkerboo had a fresh new look and was ready to make his 40th birthday debut.

Yet while he may have altered in appearance over his 41 years, the reason for Mr Yakkerboo's presence within the growing Cardinia Shire has remained constant, a point of which was highlighted by Ray Canobie in 2006.

"Those early days of Yakkerboo taught us about the power of communities - their enormous capacity to rise to challenges. Again, that holds true today. Communities which share a dream are more likely to enthusiastically support it," Ray declared.

"Communities achieve little in the absence of leadership and Yakkerboo has been very important in community development, showcasing achievement and bringing us all together."

Over four decades ago, former Shire of Pakenham secretary (CEO) Ray Canobie endeavoured to find a way to celebrate the accomplishments of an ever-expanding shire.

He found his answer in the form of the annual Yakkerboo Festival and Street Parade.

That festival and its mythical figurehead, Mr Yakkerboo, have come a long way and this year celebrate 42 years.

It was in late 1974 when Ray was pondering the ways in which the Pakenham culture could be boosted. Aware that Pakenham had 'something special', he suggested the establishment of a festival committee, wanting to promote the achievements of local community members within and beyond the shire. "(The aim was) to nurture local talent and to promote pride in ourselves." Ray explained, speaking at a dinner in 2006. "And of course have heaps of fun doing it!"

Listening to Ray's proposal, the council agreed to go ahead with the festival, with Ray employing a number of community members to help him make his concept a reality.

With obvious enthusiasm and community support, Ray and his team now faced their next problem: a name for their festival.

"We needed a catchy name for our festival.

For my part I wanted something that would grab people's attention and mentioned I was looking for something out of left field - something catchy," Ray said.

"It was in vogue those days to seek the community's views, which we did through a public advertisement and liaison with community groups, including schools. From this came the suggestion of Yakkerboo, which was the Aboriginal word for place of green pastures."

The intersection is managed by the Cardinia Shire, and council has admitted the site is a cause for “inconvenience” and “difficulty” for motorists.

“Council completed duplication and intersection upgrade works three years ago on McGregor Road between Rogers and Main streets in Pakenham,” Council’s Infrastructure Services Manager Andrew Barr said.

“In addition, VicRoads made further improvements around the Princes Highway and McGregor Road intersection over 12 months ago.

“While the works have improved safety, access and traffic flow, this area still causes some

inconvenience and difficulty for motorists.”

Mr Barr said that while the intersection does present a current challenge, the council does have plans to address it in the future.

“The Pakenham Township Strategy identifies realigning Main Street with McGregor Road at Cunningham Crescent and adding a signalised intersection as a future goal,” he said.

“Changing where vehicles enter Main Street would significantly improve traffic movements in Pakenham.

“The works would present a significant cost to council and are subject to future budget considerations.”

These improvements by VicRoads included

resequencing traffic lights to improve safety for traffic turning right from McGregor Road and The Avenue and upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing to make crossing easier and safer.

“Safety is our top priority,” VicRoads Manager for Movement and Safety Sasha Yarwood said.

“Terrifying”, “dangerous” and “a disaster” these are the words being used to describe Pakenham’s most notorious intersection.

The intersection of Main Street, McGregor Road and the Princes Highway has long been a source of controversy.

There have been 15 casualty crashes at the Princes Highway and McGregor Road intersection and three at the intersection of Main Street and McGregor Road in the past five years alone.

Garnering over 130 signatures from across Pakenham, elderly petitioner Laszlo Sinclair says enough is enough.

“Accidents happen all the time as this intersection, it’s really terrifying,” Mr Sinclair said.

“It’s particularly disastrous for elderly drivers who are vision-poor and have slower reflexes.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed here.”

Fellow elderly petitioner Merv Gould says he is afraid the treacherous road, and will lengthen his trip just to avoid it.

“I am too scared to cross it, so I avoid it altogether,” Mr Gould said.

Calls to improve the intersection have the support of MP Brian Paynter, who regularly uses the road.

“VicRoads needs to come up with a solution,” Mr Paynter said.

“As a user of this intersection all the time I know how dangerous it is.

“The whole of McGregor Road needs an upgrade. If it’s not this intersection it’s the level crossing, it’s the signals on the crossing, it’s the people turning right into Roger Street coming north, it’s Henty Street needing lights, and it’s the on-off ramps.

“I am pushing for an upgrade of McGregor Road right through.”

Mr Sinclair believes that millions of dollars in rates have been paid out of his retirement village in Main Street alone.

“Many millions are paid in rates in this area - we have every right for some basic improvements,” he said.

“There’s a huge increase of pensioners coming here to live, and for us life is not a rehearsal.

We pensioners pay our rates and what do we get back? Nothing.

They seem further away than ever, now, these Anzacs, these khaki men of rifle and pack who would never know the internet from their elbow.

No supermen here - just ordinary men volunteering to deliver for King and Country.

These men fought not for what they would come home to, but for what they had previously - because after so many years of war, the world they came home to would never be the same as the one they left.

The real legend of Anzac is not that these men were extraordinary - quite the opposite.

The true power of their deeds comes from the fact that they were ordinary men, who did extraordinary things.

And that required a level of courage that a superman would never need.

Blake’s top of his trade A Cranbourne welder has been named the best in the state.

Chisholm TAFE student and Dandenong South worker Blake McDonald took home the Best Welder in Victoria title at the third annual welding triathlon at its Frankston campus on Saturday 14 April.

The 12 competitors ranged from apprentices to professional welders and instructors.

They demonstrated their skills in three timed events designed to showcase their knowledge of three different welding processes, materials and positions.

Judges assessed their speed, accuracy, skill and adherence to welding procedures.

Competitors used industry-standard welding tools plus a Lincoln virtual reality welding machine.

Mr McDonald, who works at Bar Crusher Boats in Dandenong South, won first place.

"I found it challenging this year having to use the Lincoln VR machine. That was a surprise!" he said.

"I've competed the last two years and came last in 2017.

"I was determined to do better this year I've done a full 180."

Plea to catch Zabi’s killer

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Distraught family members have pleaded for justice for their late brother and son Zabi Ezedyar who was murdered at a home in Kurrajong Road, Narre Warren last year.

Zabi's sister Deana Ezedyar and mother, Mariam Ezedyar travelled from Perth to make a public plea for information on the unsolved murder on 16 August.

Deana said her much-missed brother as an "innocent" victim who was "naïve", "trusting" and a "kid at heart".

"He died innocently so we want justice ... To put this person away so he doesn't do it again.

"If you have a brother, sister, wife or kids, you come out (with information)."

Homicide Squad police are exploring whether Zabi was gunned down as a result of mistaken identity, with the killer possibly linked to the Comancheros or another outlaw motorcycle gang.

Detective Inspector Tim Day said there was nothing to suggest in Zabi's background that he would have been the intended target.

Police are closing on a link between a Honda CRV seen driving in the area shortly before the shooting about 7.40pm on 16 August and a white late model Toyota Corolla.

The 2014-15 Corolla was possibly used by the offenders in the lead-up, Victoria Police believe.

Zabi had moved to Melbourne seven months before the shooting. It was the first time he'd moved out by himself.

Deana and Mariam had visited Zabi for two weeks up to the day before the shooting. "It was like we were meant to go there," Deana said.

She described him loving to box on a punching bag at home, loving food and loving his close-knit extended Afghan family in Perth and Melbourne.

"He had a heart of gold," Deana said of her younger brother.

"It's had a big impact on all of us ... We think of him every day."

Zabi's mother Mariam and relatives had originally moved to Australia as refugees. They never imagined something like this would happen in Australia, Mariam said.

His sister added that Zabi would have never been capable of carrying out such a shooting himself - or even thinking about doing it.

Det Insp Day said "any piece of information no matter how small" could help solve Zabi's killing.

He said there were a number of suspects identified by police, but wouldn't elaborate on the number.

He said there was "absolutely no reason for Zabi's family to go through this."

"We have a young man who has senselessly lost his life through the unnecessarily violent actions of others.

"No family should have to lose their son or their brother like this."

Zabi Ezedyar was gunned down at a Kurrajong Road home in Narre Warren on 16 August.

A 50-year-old Endeavour Hills man has been jailed after police seized a large amount of ice, more than $400,000 cash, a stolen motorbike and firearms from his home.

John Koutsogiannakis pleaded guilty to trafficking ice, illegally possessing firearms as well as proceeds of crime charges at the Victorian County Court.

During a police raid of his home on 9 November 2015, officers seized 152 grams of meth - more than 50 per cent above the commercial trafficking threshold.

It was found in 31 zip-lock bags in a bedroom safe and in a box along with traffickinglike paraphernalia such as scales, an array of mobile phones and a notebook of names and figures.

Meth had also been flushed down the master bedroom's en suite toilet, Judge Paul Lacava said during sentencing on 13 April.

The former trucking manager was an ice addict at the time but the bulk of the seized drug was for trafficking purposes, the judge said.

Police also found 211 grams of the recreational drug 1,4-butanediol and $400,199.45 cash in various locations - including $1214.45 in coins.

Koutsogiannakis was also charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a Browning sawn-off 12-gauge shotgun and a 0.455 silver Webley Patents Mark I revolver and an imitation eight-millimetre Bruni P4 handgun.

He claimed the weapons were bought in self-defence after he was injured during a "runthrough" by intruders at his home.

"That suggests an intention to use the guns if necessary and does not excuse your offending," Judge Lacava said.

The judge noted the shotgun was loaded with salt rather than cartridges at the time.

However the prevalence of such weapons associated with drugs was also noted.

At the time of offending, Koutsogiannakis was on a community corrections order for drug and stolen goods charges. The order included drug-addiction treatment.

He had previously been convicted four times, including for firearms offences. However his life was "unblemished" in front of the law up until he was 40 years old.

He had considerable ability, hard work ethic and had contributed to society and family in the past, Judge Lacava noted.

About 2015, life changed "unrecognisably" after he became addicted to illicit drugs and estranged from his wife, children and parents.

Since the raid, the accused had responded well to 27 days in intensive drug-addiction therapy to overcome his 1.5-gram a day ice habit, the court heard.

He was only likely to re-offend if he relapsed into drug use, the judge said.

Koutsogiannakis was convicted and jailed for up to four years, with a non-parole period of at least 32 months.

Robot aces rocketing on

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A brilliant bunch of Berwick teenagers are taking on the world in a robotics world championships in Houston USA. Jadimo and Oriyla, Jayden and Riley, and Fletcher and Hudson are part of IC Robotics club won their place by blitzing all-comers at a South Pacific regional robotics championship in Sydney in March.

The tech whizzes - three sets of siblings were brimming with excitement as they head off to the States on 16 April.

They can’t wait to meet 400 other teams from around the world as well as make an exclusive tour of NASA - perhaps witnessing a rocket launch, weather permitting.

At the Sydney regionals, IC Robotics and their self-designed robot were ranked first across 60 frantic games of picking up, lifting and delivering ‘power cubes’ around an arena.

They also took out the much-sought Chairman’s Award for best embodying the spirit of not-for-profit organisers FIRST - For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.

This award doesn’t just recognise robotic genius, but the articulate spruiking and entrepreneurship of these bright sparks.

“We work in the community as part of the community,” says Oriyla.

In their own time, the youngsters have mentored and taught robotics at six schools.

They hope their international success will further inspire their proteges..

The team has presented demos for up to 20,000 people at Stringybark Festival at Knox - including showing off the perfect gadget for couch-potatoes: a moving, remote-controlled sofa on wheels.

They’ve met Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and won corporate sponsors to their cause.

That’s on top of about eight team-members devoting 1800 hours over six weeks to design,

The first 15 seconds of the robot’s challenge was pre-programmed, and then they are driven by remote.

“We had no idea how we’d do,” says Jayden of their first placing in Sydney.

“We just wanted to build a good robot.”

That “good” robot has been packed in a crate and awaits its team members to join it in Houston.

IC Robotics - IC stands for Invention Club - started out with two primary-school mates mucking around with Lego robotics 10 years ago.

Word of mouth has spread across the suburbs, with friends inviting friends, older members mentoring the young.

Sharing down the “loop of knowledge”, as Jayden puts it.

In recent weeks, the members and their families have furiously raised much of their $46,000 target to take part in the world champs.

Even critics say proposed mandatory sentencing for aggravated car jackers and home invaders will play out favourably in the electorate.

As part of the State Government's new $115 million law-and-order policy, community corrections orders will no longer be handed down for those offences.

The offences will only be punished by jail or a drug treatment order.

"We're further restricting the use of Community Corrections Orders to make sure that people who commit the most serious violent crimes get jail time," Police Minister Lisa Neville said.

Less serious forms of car jacking and home invasion will also be punishable by only jail or a drug treatment order unless there are "special reasons".

The special reasons include offenders with acquired brain injuries and intellectual disability. But drug-induced impairment is not included in the exemptions.

The Government has been steadily building a tougher law-and-order regime. At the same time, after years of rising crime, the official rate in Casey has dropped by 13 per cent in 2017.

But the raw numbers in the region are still alarming.

There were 1834 reported burglaries and break-ins, more than 6900 thefts and 2315 assaults for the year in Casey.

Opposition attorney-general John Pesutto said the changes were a step in the right direction, but a "half-hearted" attempt to tackle soft-sentencing of violent criminals.

"The changes don't go nearly far enough because they won't stop soft sentences being handed down.

"Victorians don't just want to see mandatory sentencing, they want to see mandatory minimum sentencing."

Berwick mother 'Anne', a victim-of-crime

featured by Star News in July, says she supported mandatory jail terms but didn't trust courts to follow through.

She hoped the "overdue" change would prevent others suffering like her daughter 'Beth' who was viciously stabbed and beaten unconscious by a man in her home.

The crime "robbed" Beth, lumbering her with a significant brain injury and permanently maimed.

A decade on, her condition has deteriorated to the point that she's confined to a wheelchair.

"There's so much crime happening out there ... something has to change," Anne said.

Victorian Sentencing Advisory Council chairman Arie Freiberg conceded the community felt reassured by mandatory sentences.

"There's a perception out there that judges are lenient on crime, that if judges were more willing to be tough then the community will be safer.

"There's not much evidence supporting that."

Professor Freiberg said removing community correction orders took away options for judges to consider individual circumstances.

Mandatory jail gave the community a "short reprieve" from the offender, he said.

But it would probably not deter young offenders with short-term motivation and not much long-term planning.

It would be unlikely to sway those influenced by gang and peer group pressure, or by drugs and alcohol, he argued.

They don't think they will be caught, nor of the consequences of being caught, Prof Freiberg said.

Casey Crime Page administrator Aaron Grant said stricter jail use should apply for those crimes but there should be still room for judicial discretion.

Councillor Wayne Smith described the forum as being founded on "ignorance" and "radical Christian ideology".

He had it confirmed that extra security detail had been rostered at Bunjil Place for the forum, having heard "whispers" that a protest would be held.

A high-school teacher, Cr Smith has observed the Building Respectful Relationships program cut down on homophobic bullying against LGBTI students.

"I work with a lot of kids in the LGBTI community. They have issues with being bullied, not being respected and not being included," he told Star News.

"So we ran Respectful Relationships for kids to know about this community.

"It's not about promoting sexuality, just that anyone should be respected regardless of their race, religion, colour and sexual orientation."

An "angry and disappointed" Dr CarrGregg told Star News he'd accepted an invitation to be part of the 19 April public event on the basis of a "balanced debate".

The panel's composition however had "no balance at all", he told Star News on 16 April.

"I think City of Casey owe me an apology. It's used my name and reputation to promote what sounds like a brain-washing exercise.

"They need to take a hard look at themselves.

"It's incredible that in this day and age we can have that blinkered way of thinking."

In June 2017, Casey councillors voted to lobby against the Building Respectful Relationships curriculum due to its "premature sexualisation" of young people and "sexual political agenda".

The impending forum was born from that motion.

Dr Carr-Gregg said the panel lacked a representative from the Royal Childrens' Hospital and the LGBTI community.

Though he disagreed with "aspects" of the Safe Schools anti-bullying program, he said the program's proponents had a right to be heard.

A controversial forum against a State Government anti-bullying program has been scrapped and then reinstated at a dramatic Casey Council meeting on 17 April.

The council narrowly voted to dump the 19 April forum against the Building Respectful Relationships schools program after one of its panellists Dr Michael Carr-Gregg dropped out and publicly labelled it as a "brain-washing exercise".

Minutes after the vote, the forum was revived when dissenting councillors Susan Serey, Sam Aziz, Rosalie Crestani and Milla Gilic lodged a recission motion.

The recission put the forum's cancellation on hold until the next council meeting in two weeks' time - too late to stop the forum from going ahead.

During the heated and emotional meeting, forum proponent Cr Rosalie Crestani broke down as he spoke of protecting "our children" and "our future".

"I don't cry that much. Forgive me, I get emotional because it's close to my heart.

"There are stories of children getting mentally ill because of their exposure to this.

"I just want to protect our babies."

At the meeting, forum supporter Cr Serey said cancelling the promoted event would be an embarrassment.

Cr Aziz said that it would be a defeat of freedom-of-speech and caving into political correctness or cowardice.

Cr Gilic said the forum's presenters were required to be factual and evidence-based which would ensure the event's balance.

Cr Tim Jackson introduced the motion to cancel the event, declaring there was a lack of balance on the forum's panel.

"People have a right to their views but if we're presenting this to the Casey commu-

There had been efforts to inject more balance with unrequited invitations to child psychologist Steve Biddulph, Education Minister James Merlino as well as Dr CarrGregg, Cr Crestani said.

She said no invitations were sent to representatives of the LGBTI community. "It may have been an uncomfortable situation for the LGBTI community to be on that panel."

There would be opportunity for questions and varying opinions from the floor, she said.

"If you look at (ABC TV's) Q&A you very rarely see a fully balanced panel. Conservatives are left off or one is left in a lonesome situation," Cr Crestani said.

Dr Carr-Gregg's place on the panel has been taken by conservative ethicist and writer Bill Muehlenberg who wrote Dangerous Relations: The Threat of Homosexuality.

Mr Muehlenberg was a "detailed researcher" who had written "evidence" and "statistically"-based books on the subject area, she said.

On 16 April, Dr Carr-Gregg was taken aback that he had yet to receive a response, explanation or an apology from the council to his concerns.

"This is not the Casey Council I've known and done a lot of work for in the past.

"I conclude that the council members either don't care or they are just rude."

Recycling changes

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council will shell out more than $500,000 to its recycling contractor due to China's recycling import restrictions.

According to a council report, the council is varying the rebate it receives for recycled material under its seven-year contract with SKM Industries. The terms have been kept confidential but will result in a $560,550 shortfall in expected income in 2017-18, the report states.

The defecit is expected to be offset by waste management savings, according to the report.

SKM argues the fixed-rate rebate level is unsustainable due to the Chinese government's tighter contamination rules and import permits for recycled products.

"In the present climate it is not considered an advantage for Casey to terminate the contract and retender.

"It is highly unlikely that a more favourable tender will be submitted than the SKM offer and it is highly likely that termination would result in recyclables being sent to landfill for a period."

The variation will apply from February-June 2018, with Casey officers requested to negotiate a further "cost-sharing" variation from 1 July.

The report states that the council will be taking advantage of a $13 million State Government rescue package to help renegotiate with recycling contractors.

The variation comes soon after Casey Council declared its recycling operations were unaffected by the Chinese Government's restrictions.

Casey waste and landfill manager Michael Jansen told Star News in February that "SKM already produces recyclable product to the higher standard now required by China, and is currently developing additional processing facilities with the latest sorting technology."

The Municipal Association of Victoria says after that date, all Victorians face extra rate rises of between 1.1 and 2.5 per cent to cover recycling costs.

China is reportedly the largest importer of recyclable materials in the world.

Its ban on 24 categories of solid waste this year is believed to affect an annual average of 619,000 tonnes of material in Australia.

Here to help Urologist Philip McCahy of the Melbourne Urology Centre is urging men diagnosed with prostate cancer to 'get as much information as possible from urologists and oncologists'.

"Prostate cancer is now the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men (after skin cancer) and over 3000 men die from the disease every year in Australia," Mr McCahy said.

"Whilst this may sound alarming, prostate cancer only accounts for about 4% of all male deaths and the average age of death is over 80 years. So prostate cancer is common, but slow growing and frequently not fatal."

Mr McCahy explained that there are few specific symptoms associated with prostate cancer and the majority of men are now diagnosed after a blood test - prostate-specific antigen (PSA).

"Despite its name, PSA is not that specific - infections, big benign prostates and trauma can all cause the test to be raised," he said.

"But if it is higher than expected it is a warning sign that something may be going on and the best advice would be to see a urologist.

Options include prostate biopsy, MRI scan or just keep an eye on things."

Mr McCahy also advised of possible treatments.

"If cancer is found with a biopsy, treatments include removing the prostate (radical prostatectomy) which can involve robotic surgery, various forms of radiotherapy and what is called active surveillance, where PSA is monitored along with other signs, and surgery or radiotherapy offered if the cancer appears to be progressing," Mr McCahy said.

BUSINESS IN FOCUS

Customers come first Pakenham Isuzu achieved the fourth highest sales figure in the nation in 2017 - ranking it ahead of 106 other dealerships in the group.

It’s a remarkable achievement for a dealership that opened its doors barely three years ago in the then fledgling South East Business Park at Pakenham South.

The outstanding sales figure reflects the popularity of the Isuzu product with customers from Phillip Island right through to Cranbourne and throughout Cardinia Shire.

“When we first opened in 2015 we were selling four or five cars a month. Now we sell 50 to 60 new Isuzus a month,“ said principal dealer Peter Johnson.

A good deal of that sales success can be attributed to Pakenham Isuzu’s good, old-fashioned country customer service.

Even if customers don’t buy a car, Peter and his team are adamant that they walk away from the Commercial Drive showroom having had a good experience.

Peter recounts the story of one customer who spent three hours with the Isuzu team, before deciding the range wasn’t right for him.

“The very next week he walked people through our front door and his friends bought a car off us,“ Peter said.

“We are a family run business and we like to provide a warm environment for customers.

“Everyone who walks through the door here will feel valued. Whether they buy a car or not, we want them to feel like they’ve had a good experience.“ That intense focus on the customer experience earned the dealership third place for customer service at the 2017 national Isuzu Dealer Evaluation Awards.

Peter grew up in a country family who were in the car dealership business. His parents still run dealerships across the Latrobe Valley.

He remembers sitting at the dining table as a child listening his parents talk business.

After 12 years working with his parents, Peter had the opportunity to leave the Valley for Melbourne. The group identified Pakenham as the perfect place to open a new Isuzu dealership and continue the family’s association with the trusted Japanese brand.

“We believed there was an opportunity in Pakenham, especially in a predominately rural community which was what we were used to,“ Peter said.

“When we opened three years ago there was ARB across the road, Car Megamart and there might have been four or five other businesses here. There were dirt patches everywhere.

“Now the business park is thriving.“

The Isuzu range includes the D-Max Ute and the seven seat MU-X. The brand has broad appeal among customers ranging from tradies and horse lovers, to soccer mums and grey nomads towing caravans.

“We like it because it suits the lifestyle of the people in this area,“ Peter said.

“Having previously engaged with the Isuzu Ute product, we saw what it was capable of and knew the reputation the brand had.

“I am passionate about the product. It’s a fun product to be a part of.“ The dealership now employs 25 staff, all of them locals.

“We are considered metro but we run it as a

country dealership,“ Peter explained. “ Farmers at Lang Lang get treated the same way as a buyer from Ringwood. A lot of our business is referral business for that reason.

“We’ve worked really hard to build that reputation as a community dealership that looks after its own people.“ Part of that philosophy is Pakenham Isuzu’s commitment to community sponsorship.

This financial year the dealership has contributed significantly to community groups including sporting and equestrian clubs.

It is also a major sponsor of this year’s Farm World at Lardner Park.

The dealership also gives back through its buddy bonus, whereby customers receive $150 if they refer a friend or family member to Pakenham Isuzu.

It also offers a free pick-up service anywhere in Victoria.

“50 per cent of our business is referral, which is extremely high in the car industry,“ Peter said.

“I’ve never worked with a product everyone who buys it wants to tell everyone else about it.

“It’s a vehicle that once people have a drive it sells itself.“

The heavens open right up

By Nick Creely Whether staying in the car with the wipers on, sheltering indoors or braving the wind, rain and hail, it was footy for the purists over the weekend, and despite the threat the clouds presented all weekend, crowds still came out in their droves to show support for their local club.

There is something extraordinary about wet weather football; it presents a different challenge to a game that relies so heavily on skill, with the ball and the footballers sliding across the turf for 120 minutes.

It’s all about putting bodies on the line, moving the ball forward and taking absolutely every opportunity that is presented.

But it also evens up the game immediately, and provides an underdog with a chance, and ultimately, makes it an enjoyable and worthwhile viewing experience.

The rain and wind did cause some havoc particularly early in the day - with some of the local leagues copping the brunt of it.

In the SEFNL, Officer and Tooradin-Dalmore’s reserves had to trudge their way off at Starling Road with large hailstones pelting down at one point, and it didn’t stop there. In the WGFNC, Garfield and Nar Nar Goon was halted briefly in the reserves because of the weather.

It was a far cry from the opening round of the season, played only seven days prior, in what was some of the hottest days on record in April over that week.

The stark contrast in weather was not unnoticed, with many brave fans commenting that it was ‘bloody cold’ while enjoying a beer and rugging up with a blanket and their warm-

In Big V basketball action, the Pakenham Warriors' strong form continued in their three respective divisions.

The Division 2 Men made it four wins in a row, claiming the victory in what was a battle of the Warriors as Pakenham took on Maccabi.

Pakenham took control of the game on both ends of the court as their defence stifled Maccabi into turnovers, and their offence flowed from there.

A dominant first half saw Pakenham leading by 24 points at the main break.

Josh Bjelan has taken over games all season, and this continued once again as he scored 23 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

Trent Lee (8 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds) did it all for Pakenham, controlling the tempo of the game beautifully. Pakenham ran out 9768 winners and currently sit second on the ladder.

The Youth League 2 Men claimed their second win of the season with a comprehensive 81-59 win over the Whittlesea Pacers on Saturday night.

Lee Belton (22 points) led the team in scoring, whilst Matt Berkec (17 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists) and Ned Weideman (11 points, 13 rebounds) both posted impressive double-doubles.

Pakenham's Youth League 2 Women suffered their first loss of the season in a heartbreaker against the Casey Cavaliers.

Both teams headed into the contest undefeated and neither gave an inch in what was a cracking showcase of BigV basketball.

Tiarni Fallon gave it her all, recording 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Ellie Coutts continued her run of putting up ridiculous stat lines, as she posted 9 points, 10 rebounds, 7 steals and 5 assists in a dominant display.

Unfortunately for Pakenham, they were unable to stop Lauren Tuplin (23 points, 8 rebounds) or Tess Young (15 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists) as the duo guided Casey to a thrilling 72-70 win.

Locals shine at the Games

By Hayley Wildes Our local hopes at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games have done us proud.

In what was a highly successful Games for Australia as a whole, our local competitors have also claimed multiple medals in an array of competitions.

Laetisha Scanlan, who was born and raised in Berwick, had a 28th birthday to remember, claiming gold in the women's trap shooting event.

The defending Champion didn't have it all her own way, after just making it through the qualification stage in a sudden death shootout.

As she often does, she held her nerve and performed under the intense pressure of that shootout.

Scanlan lifted for the final to make it backto-back gold medals, hitting 38 of 50 targets a new Games record - one ahead of Northern

Ireland's Kirsty Barr.

Scanlan wasn't the only shooter from Berwick to have great success at the Games, as Sergei Evglevski claimed a silver medal in the men's 25-metre rapid fire pistol event.

He made it through two qualification stages to make it to the final - a final dominated by Evglevski and eventual gold medal-winner, Anish Bhanwala from India.

20-year-old Evglevski was competing at his maiden Commonwealth Games and first major meet in the senior grade. It's clear that he has an extremely bright future in the sport.

Steph Blicavs and Daniel Kickert, from Endeavour Hills and Berwick respectively, claimed gold medals as Australia dominated their rivals on the basketball court.

The Opals claimed gold in women's basketball with a dominant 99-55 win over England in the final, with Blicavs draining two triples and finishing with seven points.

Sergei Evglevski claimed silver at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

undefeated, with the Opals averaging a ridiculous 53-point winning margin, whilst the Boomers averaged a massive winning margin of 37 points.

In the pool, Tooradin-raised Josh Beaver took home bronze in the men's 200-metre backstroke.

After qualifying sixth quickest, Beaver turned it up a gear in the final, capping an Australian sweep of the medals in the event, with Mitch Larkin claiming gold and Bradley Woodward taking home silver.

The bronze medal was Beaver's fourth Commonwealth Games medal, after taking home two silvers and a bronze at the 2014 Games in Glasgow.

Overall, Australia claimed an incredible 198 medals in total; 80 gold, 59 silver and 59 bronze. That total was streaks ahead of next best England, who finished with 136 medals; 45 gold, 45 silver and 46 bronze.

Comets bounce back under lights against Beaumaris

By Nick Creely FFV SOCCER WRAP ROUND 3 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH/EAST The Casey Comets well and truly bounced back from last week's drubbing, knocking off Beaumaris under lights 2-1 on Friday night.

In front of their home crowd, the Comets were almost immediately on the board after Dejan Radojicic found the back of the net in the eighth minute, before Radojicic struck once more before half time to have the home

side in a strong position.

The Sharks found a late goal in the second, but were unable to break through the defences of the home side in an otherwise disappointing performance.

As a result of the win, the Comets sit in fourth spot, only one point off Richmond SC in third.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH/EAST Berwick City is finally on the board in 2018, grinding their way to an 0-1 victory against Heatherton United away on Saturday night.

After two opening round losses, the pressure was on City - a side expected to be in the running for a premiership - to claim a win and get their season off and running.

In a hard fought battle of territory in what was a horrible Melbourne day, Christopher L'Enclume found the goal City needed, finding the back of the net in a match winning strike.

Down at Waratah Reserve, Doveton thumped North Caulfield 3-1.

STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH The rain certainly took its toll down at Bellbird Park, with the clash between Drouin

Dragons and Pakenham United washed out.

Elsewhere, Rowville District were far too strong for Bunyip at Park Ridge 6-0, while Lyndale United defeated Casey Panthers 0-5 in a powerful display.

In other matches across the round, Chelsea FC thumped Knox United 6-1, White Star Dandenong couldn't quite pip Endeavour Hills Fire 1-3, while Somerville Eagles kept it's good form going with a cruisy win against Aspendale SC 3-1.

Old Mentonians had the bye.

'Mr Steady' takes out A Grade at Pakenham PAKENHAM GOLF On Monday, 9 April, Pakenham's A Grade winner was 'Mr Steady' John Kingman with 38 points with Alan 'Egg Man' Borch runner up with 37.

One of the newer members, Jack Hines, won B Grade also with 38 points.

The runner up was Lionel Mahony with 37 points, and players won a ball with 35 points.

The B Grade winner took it to a whole new level.

John Nothdurft won with a phenomenal 48 points, which outdid John Wilson’s 45 points.

John Wilson was in the clubhouse writing his victory speech until the other John came in.

Spare a thought for Ross Stewart because he had 45 points and only won a ball.

His consolation was winning the Supercomp with 25 points.

Thursday 12 April was Pink Day, which

turned out to be a hugely successful day with winners in Man/Man, Man/Lady and Lady/ Lady combinations.

On Friday 13 April, Matt Brown won with 34 points on a very windy day.

The weather had other ideas on Saturday 14 April, because by mid-morning the wind was howling and then the rain started.

There was multiple players that failed to complete their round which is completely understandable. The players that did complete their golf, Peter Reilly was the best with 38 points which won A Grade.

Runner up was Dave Manning with 35 points.

The B Grade winner was Wayne Lamers with 36 points on a countback from Andrew Heagney.

The C Grade winner was Duncan Campbell with 36 points with Domonic Lewin a close second with 34 points.

Well done to David Mair for his eagle on the first and also to Jerome Tavui for his eagle on the 3rd.

Sunday’s winner was Tim Sallai with 35 points on a countback from Mark Delaney.
