Workers’ gelignite ‘surprise’

By Luke Voogt An explosive that could be almost 90 years old has fallen onto the Great Ocean Road, forcing traffic closures.

Workers dislodged the old stick of gelignite on Wednesday afternoon, with Lorne Leading Senior Constable Mick Atkinson believing it dated back to the road’s construction between world wars.

“The contractors and Worksafe inspectors are of the opinion that it’s been there since the construction of the Great Ocean Road, so we’re talking the 1930s,“ he said.

“As the contractors were descaling loose rock they’ve dislodged one rock, which has fallen to the road and cracked.”

Inside was an unexploded 40cm stick of gelignite broken into several pieces, Ld Sen Const Atkinson said.

The workers were understandably surprised and apprehensive, he added.

“People who don’t have any experience in explosives would obviously treat this with a fair degree of caution.”

$2m tourism boost Geelong’s tourism board is awaiting confirmation of state funding after council this week agreed to chip in $2 million next financial year.

Council’s renewed three-year partnership with Tourism Greater Geelong and Bellarine followed last week’s Indy report that the industry was on the verge of generating over a $1 billion a year in revenue for the region.

Council this week signed a new memorandum of understanding with the tourism board until 2021 as the largest of the board’s three municipal partners.

But State Government has yet to recommit its three-year funding deal, concluding at the end of the financial year.

The government committed $275,000 in 2015 after overcoming fallout with the board over its 2013 split from the tourism authority overseeing the Great Ocean Road and Otway Ranges region.

City Hall was hopeful the government would come to the party again.

“We anticipate a continuation of state funding beyond the current agreement. The exact figure is yet to be confirmed,” said City Hall investment and attraction acting director Tim Ellis.

The City described its relationship with the tourism board as “longstanding and successful”, predating the 2013 split from the former Geelong Otway Tourism.

“For more than 20 years the partnership has

proven highly effective in helping to achieve rapid growth for our visitor economy.

“Tourism delivered approximately $921 million into the local economy in 2017, with around 5.3 million visitors. This is forecast to grow to $1.145 billion by 2030, with annual visitation to top seven million, making the sector one of the most important to the region’s future.”

Mayor Bruce Harwood backed the future of tourism for the Geelong region.

“Our beautiful region has so much going for it as a visitor destination, and our tourism industry is doing a great job delivering huge growth, but more importantly a world-class travel experience,” he said.

‘Bypass’ fears over plans for Anglesea

By Luke Voogt Anglesea residents have banded together over fears Surf Coast Shire could build a ring road through sensitive heathland and residential streets.

Barrister Andrew Laird joined residents yesterday to voice their anger at council submission they believed hinted at development of a bypass.

“One thing that’s absolutely incensed our group is that there was no consultation,” he said.

“People have their lives and large amounts of money invested in their properties on these roads.”

In a submission to an Anglesea Futures Land Use Plan, the shire revealed plans for a study of possible routes “to assist the movement of local traffic”.

The shire would consider Coalmine Road, Messmate Road and Harvey Street as an option, the submission said.

“I read that document with interest and my

eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw references to Harvey Street and Messmate Track,” Mr Laird said.

The plan would “not result in an Anglesea ring-road, highway or bypass,” the submission said.

“Whether it’s called a ring road or not that’s irrelevant,” Mr Laird said.

“If it looks like a duck it probably is a duck.”

Mr Laird said building “a de facto arterial road” through the roads, including two residential streets and a four-wheel-drive track, would be “outrageous“.

“This link, if it was ever built, goes right through this area.”

Mr Laird acknowledged the need for alternative routes given summer gridlock on the Great Ocean Road at Anglesea.

Tourists already used Camp Road as a “de facto ring road” but the shire’s upgrading of other roads could cause similar traffic mayhem and damage the environment, he warned.

“If you were a resident on Campbell Road or any of the adjacent roads you would struggle

to leave your house on a busy holiday.”

Mr Laird argued for an alternative route for a potential bypass via Bald Hill Road north of the town’s recently-closed power plant.

He planned to discuss the submission this Friday with ward councillor Libby Coker.

“We welcome the fact that the shire is now belatedly reaching out.”

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson joined the outraged residents yesterday.

“I’m very concerned about a proposal to construct a link road along messmates track and Harvey Street which would cut through highly sensitive areas including national parks.”

Anglesea councillor Margot Smith said the shire only planned to conduct a study of the roads and had no plans for a bypass. “(The sentence of the submission) has been interpreted in different ways by certain people and maybe it’s a sentence that shouldn’t be in there,” she said.

But Cr Smith declined to rule out the possibility of a future ring road in the area.

Victoria Police said officers charged a 22-year-old Newcomb man with drink driving and conduct endangering life after breathtesting him at the scene.

Osborne deferral Geelong’s council has deferred a decision on a controversial plan to lease part of North Geelong’s Osborne Park to a developer.

This week’s deferral followed community residents raising concerns that any development could compromise the heritage value of the site, which includes historic Osborne House.

Fire suspicious Investigators are yet to determine the cause of a suspicious fire at a Hamlyn Heights school late last week, according to Victoria Police.

An arson chemist investigated the site after a passer-by reported the blaze in a portable building at Chaucer St’s Hamlyn Banks Primary School around 9.15pm on 5 April, police said.

Electoral shakeup Highton will end up in Corio and the federal MP now sitting in Corangamite will become the Member for Cox under proposed electorate changes in the Geelong region.

Australian Electoral Commission’s boundaries shake-up would extend the seat of Corio into southern Geelong, removing suburbs from Corangamite and renaming the electorate after a woman who taught swimming at Queenscliff in the early 1900s.

Walker fall Emergency crews have rescued a bushwalker with multiple fractures after he fell 10 to 20 metres down a hillside at the You Yangs, according to an SES spokesperson.

The man in his 60s was airlifted to hospital after SES members and paramedics rushed to the scene at Little River’s Flinders Peak on Monday morning, the spokesperson said.

More care A $1.1 million grant will allow a Geelong hospice to help dying people stay in their homes longer, according to the service’s chair.

The state funding would allow Anam Cara to increase its day hospice program from two days a week to five, said Diana Taylor.

Linda was a toddler when her father, 30, died in a road accident in the early stages of the 1958 Tour of Gippsland.

She described Geelong council naming its “new home of cycling” at the Belmont Criterium Track the Russell Mockridge Pavilion as an honour.

“And kind of not unexpected in a way, because I know that Geelong people have been holding his memory dear for a long time, so it’s

just lovely,” she said.

“I teach, and I have taken his gold medals into school and showed them, and they go, ‘Really?’ I’m not quite sure they believe me. So it’s been amazing.”

Geelong Mayor and avid cyclist Bruce Harwood described Mockridge as one of the city’s greatest sportsmen.

“It’s fantastic that our cyclists of today will now see his name and remember his deeds every time they come to train.”

The City contributed $934,000 and the Victorian Government $466,000 for the pavilion.

A Geelong high school girl has won an international modelling competition in London, her agency has announced.

‘Visit our mosque’, says region’s imam

By Luke Voogt Geelong’s newly-restored mosque will hold its first public open day since a deliberately-lit fire destroyed it two years ago.

“This is a place that is open to everyone and everyone is welcome,” said Geelong imam Shaykh Mohammad Ramzan.

The mosque reopened last month after Geelong locals raised about $400,000 for the $1 million-plus rebuild, with insurance money covering the remainder of the cost.

“It was not just the Muslim community but across the board,” Mr Ramzan said.

“It was marvellous. We waited for that day.”

The blaze destroyed the heritage-listed mosques’ roof and stained glass windows but left its bluestone exterior intact.

The Uniting Church moved the building “stone by stone“ from Geelong West to Manifold Heights in 1943, at a cost of 4000 pounds, Mr Ramzan explained.

The Muslim community bought the building in 1993.

“People can come to look at their heritage and how it’s integrated into Australian and Islamic cultures,” Mr Ramzan said.

“Rather looking at the mosque as something segregated or not belonging to us, we want people to see it as part of Geelong and our community.“ Geelong Muslims “wanted nothing“ to do with countries using differences in Sunni and Shiite Islam to justify conflicts and “political interests,” Mr Ramzan said.

“Living here together we have no problem.

Sunnis and Shiites lived together peacefully in the past for 1300 years.”

Mr Ramzan said the majority of Muslims in Geelong were Sunni, like himself, but he welcomed Shiites to the mosque too.

“We have between 17 to 20 different nationalities and cultures practicing under the one roof.”

Mr Ramzan has long spoken against terrorists, who he said “have nothing to do with Islam or any other religion.”

“They are trying to hijack the peaceful teach-

ings of Islam.“ He regularly preaches to his congregation that “human blood is sacred,” he said.

“In the Quran it’s very clear. They know what my stance is.”

Geelong Mosque opens to the public between 12pm and 4pm on Sunday as part of a Victoria-wide mosque open day.

Mr Ramzan said women would not have to wear headdress for the day but asked visitors to dress modestly.

Police mount city initiative Mounted police have trotted through central Geelong as part of a crackdown on school holiday hooligans.

Operation City-Safe ran across both weeks of the holidays to “address anti-social behaviour”, Victoria Police said.

The operation had a special focus on “the vicinity of the mall and bus exchange”, police said.

Patrolling officers provided a “proactive police response to street-level offences in the central activities area” along withg a “visible police presence to improve the public's perception of safety”.

Several members from Geelong Police Station and Victoria Police’s Mounted Branch worked on the operation over the two weeks.

Victoria Police said the officers adopted “zero tolerance” to street offences and anti-social behaviour including alcohol consumption.

The operation dealt out several infringement notices and arrests in its first week, police said.

“We thank the community for their support and positive comments during the running of this operation.

“Operation commander Senior Sergeant Michael Turner has stated that the community and the traders have all expressed how the perception of the area has changed over the first few days of the operation.”

Anti-social behaviour has blighted central Geelong for years, with traders demanding an increased police presence and other initiatives to deter crime. In August last year traders told the Indy the problem was “getting worse” as teenagers and older youths played up in the area of the mall. Traders have called for police to establish a booth in the vicinity of the mall, which the state opposition has promised ahead of November's election.

DOUBLE TAKE Double Take was disgusted, absolutely disgusted, at this week’s childish reaction to the proposed renaming of the federal seat of Corangamite.

The pathetic double entendres flowed thick and fast, mostly in reference to either Liberal MP Sarah Henderson or Labor challenger Libby Coker becoming the Member for Cox - haw-haw.

How immature! Grow up, people!

Unfortunately, the locker-room mentality of too many in this region will inevitably force Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) into recalling Cox and presenting an alternative.

So what should it be?

Well, the initial suggestion’s brevity with only three letters was a positive for graphic presentation compared to the lengthy Corangamite, which needs the side of a bus to be presented in a size readable from across the street.

Also, it’s always good to recognise contributors to our community, rather than inanimate geographical features.

And the snappy sound of any word ending with an ‘x’ is always appealing.

Hmm, three letters, a local person of note, surname ending in ‘x’….

It can only be former Ford Australia managing director, ex-chairman of Telecom, Qantas and Australian Airlines, post-amalgamation commissioner of City of Greater Geelong, and Order of Australia recipient William ‘Bill’ Dix. Controversy closed!

While on Corgangamite, the AEC proposal has thrown up a wonderfully ironic clash of politically correct intentions.

The AEC explained that choosing the name of early-1900s Queenscliff swimming teacher May Cox would increase the representation of women among federal electorate names.

But the AEC has yet to explain why the surname of a white female should come at the expense of Aboriginal heritage, given that ‘Corangamite’ is a local indigenous word for ‘bitter’ or ‘salty’.

Talk about discrimination! Someone alert the Australian Human Rights Commission!

Hopefully the AEC is unaware that the name of the nearby seat of Corio is also taken from a local Aboriginal dialect or Richard Marles might end up the Member for Joan Kirner!

For anyone unfamiliar with the band, which is probably everyone, the groups describe Formidable Vegetable Sound System as “the world’s most triumphant experiment in ecological electro-funkswing”, whatever that is.

But it gets more intriguing yet. The Vegie Sound System will apparently present “energetic, quirky mash-ups of speakeasy-style antique beats with live ukulele, hyperactive horns and the principles of permaculture”.

What? No vuvuzela?

Anyway, anyone interested in a “fun-filled night out dancing to permaculture tunes” can book through The Farmer’s Place.

And please, feel free to provide a review, or at least a coherent explanation, for next week’s Double Take.

The workers used traffic cones to close the road before police arrived to divert traffic.

“Our job as police was to ensure that the scene was isolated, secured and safe,” Ld Sen Const Atkinson said.

“We take all precautions to ensure nothing can go wrong.”

Police closed the Great Ocean Road between Cumberland River and Lorne for several hours as two Worksafe specialists removed the explosive.

“They’re the experts in removing and disposing these items,” Ld Sen Const Atkinson.

“It may be routine thing for them but it’s certainly not for us.”

Police conducted further traffic diversions around Wye River before reopening the road several hours later.

The explosives posed no threat to public safety during the operation to remove them, a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

A Worksafe spokesperson said the explosive was most likely a “relic from the road’s construction” but was unable to confirm the origin beyond doubt.

“An exclusion zone was established and WorkSafe destroyed the explosive material by burning it,” the spokesperson said.

“There were no injuries as a result of the incident.”

The Worksafe specialists found no detonator attached to or in the vicinity of the explosive, the spokesperson said.

The chance of Gelignite exploding without something to detonate is extremely unlikely, due to its composition.

A DNA test has identified missing Geelongborn soldier Alfred Thompson almost 102 years after he died in the Battle of Fromelles.

Oldest living relative Brian Thompson only discovered his great uncle Alfred a few years ago, when the Fromelles Association of Australia tracked him down.

“It’s unreal,” the 80-year-old from Portarlington said.

“I’d never heard of him. It’s something that’s just come out of the blue.”

He still remembers answering a call from the association’s researcher Margaret O’Leary, who requested a DNA sample.

“That’s the only time a woman’s said to me in 80 years, ‘Thank God I’ve found you',” he said.

“They’re fanatical people. It’s unreal the amount of work they do trying to find every solider that’s been killed.”

So Brian swabbed his cheeks, with his wife as a witness, and sent the sample to the Netherlands for testing a year ago.

He all but forgot the test until last week, when eldest son Wayne phoned him while he was playing lawn bowls at Port Fairy.

“I was jumping around,” he said.

In his excitement Brian held up the game, so he called Wayne back later when the enormity of the discovery sunk in.

“I thought it was great. I’m happy to have done my bit.

“I’m just sorry that he was so young to die.

He’s not the only one - there were thousands.“ Private Alfred Thompson, 23, was one of 5,533 Australians who died during 1916 in the Battle of Fromelles, a disastrous British feint to draw German troops from the Somme.

Alfred was one of 250 soldiers the Germans buried in an unmarked grave.

The Fromelles Project last week identified the remains of nine Australians using DNA, including Alfred, leaving 91 of the 250 still unidentified.

Alfred was born Geelong in 1893, later growing up and working as a farmer in the outer-Sydney suburb of Warwick Farm.

His distraught mother wrote to the Australian Army seeking news of him following his death.

“Enclosed are 2 slips showing that my son’s body was taken by the Germans, as when the stretcher bearer went back to look for him, after takeing (sic) his mate (George Orchard) to the station his body was nowhere about,“ she wrote in a letter.

“The flower of this country have been taken while the pleasure seeker and shirker stay behind,“ another letter reads.

Brian was born 22 years after Alfred’s death and his grandparents raised him in Williamstown.

“My grandfather and Alfred have got different mothers but the same father,” he said.

“They never mentioned things like (the war) to children I suppose.”

Brian has a single, now-treasured photo which he believes depicts uncle Alfred on his 21st birthday.

He plans to travel to Fromelles with his wife and three children to pay tribute to Alfred and his fellow soldiers on 19 July, after helping to solve the century-old mystery.

“They were all young Australians that never had much of a life,” Brian said.

Geelong projects ‘off list’

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG: Victorian Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan.

Liberal MPs have slammed the Andrews Government for failing to submit Geelong projects for a national infrastructure priority list.

Geelong missed out after Victoria became the only state or territory to submit “zero initiatives” for Infrastructure Australia’s 2018 list, said federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson.

The failure denied the region “desperately needed infrastructure”, she said.

Ms Henderson accused Premier Daniel Andrews of “playing politics” with vital projects.

Federal Urban Infrastructure and Cities Minister Paul Fletcher backed Ms Henderson, saying Mr Andrews had “again proven he is more interested in playing politics than working constructively with the Commonwealth”.

“Daniel Andrews was happy to attack the respected independent body Infrastructure Australia recently, complaining there were too few Victorian projects on the Infrastructure Australia priority list. But he forgot to mention one vital detail: the list is developed based on submissions from state governments, and for two years the Andrews Labor Government in Victoria has not bothered to submit any initiatives.”

Liberal state Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay said the Andrews Government was too preoccupied with rorts, union deals and fighting the Greens for inner-city seats to worry about regional Victoria.

All of Victoria’s major construction works were in Melbourne, Mr Ramsay said.

“With billions of dollars of federal funding sitting waiting to be spent, this government is still planning the Midlands Highway upgrade, the Waurn Ponds to South Geelong rail duplication and the Drysdale bypass.”

Mr Ramsay said the government had left in limbo Geelong projects including a conven-

tion centre, an upgrade of the city’s railway station and revitalisation of the city centre.

“Given the population growth of the region, these priority projects can’t sit in the must-do pile any longer. This government has to start doing something for regional Victoria.”

But Victorian Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allen said the Liberals were “wrong, wrong, wrong”.

“The government has worked closely with Infrastructure Australia on our priority projects since 2015, providing project business cases and a series of detailed briefings for senior officials,” Ms Allen said.

“The government lodged a submission to the IA Audit and Plan process in September 2015, including a package of the Victorian Government’s priority transport projects, many of which are included in the plan. We have recently submitted business cases to Infrastructure Australia for the Ballarat Line upgrade stage one project and the $711 million Monash Freeway stage two upgrade project.”

Ms Allen named “Melbourne to Geelong rail enhancement” as one of 13 projects on which the government was working with Infrastructure Australia.

The other projects were all in Melbourne.

At the same time, the Andrews Labor Government is planning for the next tranche of infrastructure investment to support the continued growth of our state,” Ms Allen said.

“This includes work on a joint business case for duplication of the Geelong line from South Geelong to Waurn Ponds to increase capacity on the Geelong line and planning for improvements to the metropolitan network, including Fisherman’s Bend and planning for an airport rail link and faster rail services to Geelong and the regions.”

By Luke Voogt Three Geelong charities providing surfing for disadvantaged kids, unique drug rehab and food for the needy will compete for $15,000 next Tuesday.

The charity leaders will present their pitch ‘shark tank’ style in front of a live audience at Federal Mills.

Torquay youth worker Rachael Parker hoped the funding would allow her to take more disadvantaged children surfing.

The former Melbournian founded Ocean Mind after moving in 2016, for children who have experienced bullying, disadvantage or mental health issues.

“They come out of the water with huge smiles on their faces,” she said.

“Surfing is hard - so if they can surf they know they can... achieve anything they put their minds to.”

Rachael had her first surf lesson in Cornwell, England, and loved it, before surfing at better-known beaches in Portugal.

She found “silence” and peace from her lifelong battle with depression on the ocean.

“I’ve spent 10 years working with homeless young people and people exiting juvenile justice system,” she said.

“A lot of the kids didn’t really connect well with counsellors. (Surfing) allows those open, quality conversations.”

Also competing for the $15,000 was Kane Nuttall, who beat his 12-year ice addiction through the gym and “strength inside”.

Kane was already partying on ecstasy, speed and cocaine when he became addicted to ice in 2004, before people realised “how bad it was“.

Sick of waiting lists and being handballed from person to person, he planned his own rehab.

“I wasn’t born an addict and I’m definitely not going to die one,” he said. geelongindy.com.au

He now takes five to 10 people each week to the gym, pool sessions, cooking classes and on hikes across the You Yangs through his The Power In You Project.

The project, which he runs at South Geelong, had helped people before, during and after rehab, he said.

“Rather than them being thrown to the wolves, here’s a space where we can restore their self-worth.

“In the first 12 months we had 30 people and only five relapsed.”

Kane hoped the $15,000 would help him expand the project from three to five days a week.

The money also could provide more nutritious food for people battling in Geelong’s northern suburbs, according to Norlane Community Initiatives’ Simon Reeves.

“A lot of our projects are around food because it’s a big issue here,” he said.

“Single mothers and fathers often identify that food is their biggest problem.”

The group runs a weekly dinner for 60 to 70 people, a ‘People’s Pantry’ foodbank with 60 homes and weekly lunches.

“Everybody cooks together, eats together and clean together at the dinner,” Simon said.

“There are lot of kids running around playing games and people having coffee and getting to know each other.”

The money could hire a community development worker to work alongside the group’s “passionate volunteers,“ he said.

“We’re trying to scrape the funds together now but it’s pretty hard.”

“We’re very excited to be able to share our story - we have so many people here that are willing to work really hard.”

The Funding Network, which is providing the money, has raised $7.5 million in four years for more than 180 grassroots groups around Australia.

I respectfully requested a full explanation from Premier Daniel Andrews and local MPs Christine Couzens and Lisa Neville on why dental disease in the greater Geelong area was when then-Chief Medical Officer John Carnie promised in 2009 that tooth decay would reduce up to 60 per cent after fluoridation commenced.

Immoral spectators to tragedy On Good Friday I witnessed the result of a collision between a motorcyclist and a vehicle in the quiet Victorian country town of Inverleigh, near Geelong.

The male motorcyclist was badly injured.

As usual, the road accident attracted a lot of onlookers who were drawn to what was a life and death situation. They were like moths to a flame.

They were Ghouls, the lot, seeking a cheap form of entertainment from a situation in which a man was fighting for his life. They were people with no empathy for the suffering, with the potential for death.

They were eating pies and cakes from the local bakery, washing down the lot with soft drinks or coffee, chatting animatedly, pointing fingers in the direction of the human tragedy.

They gawked at those trying to help the downed rider.

Surely, if one cannot assist one would move away out of respect for the victim and his privacy.

Gender fools off scales The folly of truth distortion was demonstrated, again, at the Commonwealth Games.

A New Zealand transgender weightlifter was in line for a women’s gold medal before breaking an arm.

“I am no different to any other woman,” said Laurel Hubbard.

Hubbard won a silver medal at the world championships and would have been favourite for gold.

The Commonwealth Games Federation stated there was no moral, ethical or legal reason to keep Hubbard out of the games. Many athletes and coaches disagreed.

As a Bible believer, I hold that this is a moral problem where people are living in denial of reality, an ethical problem when Biblical absolutes are denied, and will become a legal problem assigned to the courts.

The current call is for cultural inclusion, but to gloss over differences is to deny reality and give credence to false truth.

‘Mad’ pair back together

By Luke Voogt Leopold-born-and-bred rocker Adam Harvey returns to Geelong this month with longtime friend and fellow country star Beccy Cole.

“She’s as mad a bloody cut snake, but I must be too. I think that’s why we get along so well,” he said this week.

Harvey remembers rocking Cole’s then-baby son to sleep as she cut loose on stage.

“Years later, I’ve got a couple of kids of my own and that baby boy is 18 years old,” he said.

Cole has won nine Golden Guitars and had turbulent life, including two divorces and coming out as gay in 2012.

“I’ve been her friend through a lot of the turmoils and drama,” Harvey said.

“I can see it on stage that she’s really happy now.”

Harvey and Cole embarked on their 10th Australian tour together midway through 2017.

“She’s the best entertainer I’ve ever seen on stage - it’s hard work just trying to keep up with her and guess what she’s going to do next.”

Harvey was looking forward to returning for a “wild night“ at the Gateway Hotel on 27 April, one of the tour’s last stops.

“She’s come a long way the old Gateway,” he said.

“You wouldn’t go near the joint once upon a time. Fingers crossed we’ll have them swinging from the rafters again.

“Hopefully we can make the crowd forget about all the crap in the world and their dramas, and if we can do that, we’re doing our job.”

He was also thrilled to see old friends and family and how Leopold had changed.

“I can’t believe it - it’s grown into a bloody city of its own,” he said.

“Mum still lives out there - she’ll be at the show.”

His parents were the reason he got into music, he explained.

“Mum and dad used to brainwash me with country music and drive me to all the different talent quests.“ His mum would watch him play with Geelong cover bands while his late dad used to “sit

out the back with the musicians drinking”.

Harvey gave up earthmoving about two decades ago to chase his music dreams in Sydney, with his then-pregnant partner.

“If you wanted a career in country music you had to move to Sydney,” he said.

“My friends said ‘you’ve given up your job, what’s wrong with you?’”

He enjoyed earthmoving, but it was his old boss gave him “that little push” he needed.

“He said to me ‘you can only serve on master - you can’t do both half hearted,’” he said.

The decision paid off - Harvey has won eight Golden Guitars since.

“I’ve just been lucky that’s all,” he said. “I’ve got the best job in the world.”

Celtic fest reveals bands The National Celtic Festival has announced eight new acts to help will fill Portarlington’s foreshore with the sounds of fiddle and folk in June.

High-energy band Claymore returns to the festival with an eclectic mix of Scottish and Australian musicians and its own troupe of highland dancers.

The band has played all over the world, from the US, Scotland and France to right here on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Joining Claymore on the bill is Amber, a band featuring four up-and-coming musicians from Geelong and Melbourne.

The band’s young members Caitlin Martin, Indyana Kippin, and Matt and Sean Smith have added piano and vocals to a string quartet in their fresh take on folk.

Also on the line-up is award-winning Irish duo Dermot Blyne and Brid Harper.

Blyne won Irish TV station TG4’s musician of the year in 2013 while Harper is an Irish fiddle champion.

Scottish-Australian fiddler and teacher Catherine Fraser joins the festival after playing alongside some of the biggest names on the Celtic music scene.

Fraser will play alongside guitarist Trent Arkleysmith and cellist Rachel Johnston fresh off releasing her seventh studio album last year.

The globe-trotting Adelaide Scottish Fiddle Club brings South Australia’s passionate Celtic musicians to the festival.

The club has members aged eight to eighty who have performed in France, Scotland and the US. Scottish-born songstress Fiona Ross brings her repertoire of songs from everyday life, love and work, along with the ‘muckle sangs’ - the big ballads

POWERHOUSE: Claymore will again play at this year's National Celtic Festival.

Ross has performed at traditional music festivals throughout Scotland, Russia, China and the US. Telenn Tri brings the rhythms and melodies harp, piano accordion, Irish bouzouki, guitar and Scottish fiddle to give festival-goers a taste of traditional Celtic sound.

And finally, Senor Cabrales rounds up the line-up with a Spanish twist.

The band features six traditional musicians from northern Spain and Australia combin-

ing Spanish bagpipes, fiddle, flute, mandolin, bouzouki and bodhran in a sound unique to the festival.

The National Celtic Festival attracts more than 15,000 people each year, and this year features 14 stages with showcases, dance, theatre, literature readings, classes and more.

The festival’s folk market features fine food and fresh produce from a wide range of food trucks, local wines, craft brews and spirits from Victoria’s bespoke distilleries.

The market is adjacent to the festival and free to the public, so non-ticket holders can get amongst it too.

The latest round of artists join previouslyannounced acts Altan, Colin Lilli, Hat Fitz and Cara, Maggie Carty and Máirtín, Staunton, Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club, Paul McKenna Band, Rich Davies and The Low Road, Siobhan Owen, Tim Scanlan Trio, Trouble in the Kitchen and Zeon at the festival.

By Luke Voogt The Sassy Girls will dive into wartime life through song next Friday to raise funds for Geelong RSL’s Anzac Day appeal.

The Geelong trio return to Club Italia with 1940s classics celebrating war veterans.

“We’re pulling out all the old tunes,” said the group’s Gail Lambert.

Lambert performed alongside fellow Sassy Girls Gayle Burrill and Linda Allen for about 350 people at the club last year .

“We were so thrilled with the response. The smiling faces and people remembering, that’s what it’s all about,” the Torquay local said.

“Everyone was linking arms and swaying and singing when we sang We’ll Meet Again.”

One woman from England broke into a hand jive before explaining how Brits with no room to move their legs in bomb shelters invented the dance, Lambert said.

“It made it even more fun when people were doing it.”

Lambert grew up in Geelong to the sounds of swing and the Andrews Sisters on her parents’ record player.

“There was no television when I was young,” she said.

“We were dancing and having sing-alongs in the lounge room.“ Lambert started The Sassy Girls under a different name 30 years ago. Burrill joined the trio about 15 years ago and her sister Allen followed her a decade later.

“I’m lucky to be able to sing with them,” Lambert said.

The show will include a “sprinkling” of hits from the Vietnam War, she said.

“Gayle and Linda love the 60s and 70s!”

Boosts for mental health

By Christine Couzens, Member For Geelong As the Member for Geelong, I am very pleased to have announced $6.8 million for two projects to revitalise mental health services at Barwon Health.

Barwon Health will receive $3.4 million through the Labor Government’s $200 million Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

A further $3.8 million is being invested from the Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs Facilities Renewal Fund and other programs.

Approximately $3 million will go towards the remodelling of the Swanston Centre Mental Health Acute Unit at University Hospital Geelong. The refurbishment will create 19 jobs during construction, and is expected to be completed in 2019.

Barwon Health is receiving $485,000 to upgrade the hydrotherapy pool at the McKellar Centre. The new pool tiles, pool deck and change rooms will improve the quality and safety of rehabilitation services.

We have also announced $50 million from the Victorian Budget 2018/19 to help hospitals open more beds hire more doctors and nurses and treat more patients during the flu season.

As part of this boost, Barwon Health will receive $1,960,000 to address their local winter demands in a range of ways that best suit their community’s needs - for example, putting on more doctors and nurses, or opening more beds to treat more patients.

Geelong is now a vibrant city with lots of activity, to add to this I am pleased to have announced $250,000 in new funding to support the local Geelong creative sector.

Creative Geelong will receive $100,000 to develop and expand the impact of its Makers Hub in Centrepoint Arcade. The Makers Hub has become a much-loved collaborative space for Gee-

New clinic a step beyond Elizabeth Ladyjenski is on a quest to smash the stereotypical image of the dentist.

“I’ve been doing this for 13 years and pretty much every day you come across patients who are really nervous and have had a bad experience in their life,” she says.

“They’re terrified and can’t wait to get in and get out.”

Two weeks ago she opened Corio Central Dental, which is anything but an average clinic.

“A lot of people are surprised when they come in because it looks and feels different to what they’re used to,” she says.

“We’ve got a few five-star Google reviews already so it’s been pretty positive so far.

“We love salt lamps, oil burners, incense sticks and music. We don’t agree with scary and clinical.

“People normally look forward to a day spa, hairdresser and massage parlour - we want the dentist to be the same.”

Dr Ladyjenski and her Armstrong Creek employee Ting Li are friendly dentists who “do things a little bit differently”.

“We like to bridge the gap between dentist and patient, so every single patient feels valued and supported,” she says.

But creating a pleasant experience is about more than changing attitudes towards dentistry for Dr Ladyjenski.

Encouraging people to get to the dentist early is vital to preventing tooth and mouth problems later, she says.

“We try to make the place as inviting as possible, so people want to assess their dental

“The best time to start is when people are young and as little damage as possible has been done, so they’re on the right track straight away.

“We’ve already seen a couple of kids and they were really happy.”

Dr Ladyjenski and Dr Li met through their studies at the University of Melbourne.

“We have the same mindset of having comprehensive care and long-term goals,” she says.

“I wanted to work in a field where you a make a difference in one appointment.”

Dr Li grew up in Grovedale, while Melbournebased Dr Ladyjenski is considering a move down due to less traffic and the relaxed vibe.

“I really enjoy working here,” she says.

Dr Ladyjenski, Dr Li and dental assistant Anna Presley all have rescue cats and are searching for a local animal welfare charity to support.

“We strongly care about supporting animals in need and organisations that make the effort to help those animals,” Dr Ladyjenski says.

Scanner to ease pressure Geelong’s second positron emission tomography (PET) scanner will open to the public this month, to the delight of Lake Imaging nuclear medicine physician Raef Boktor.

“We want to make it easier for more of Geelong to get the benefits of this very important imaging modality,” Dr Boktor says.

“The idea behind this is Lake Imaging is trying to bring the best technology to the local community.”

The PET scanner is vital for detecting cancers and can pick up information that other modalities can not, Dr Boktor explains.

“Many tumours can be imaged by the PET scanners. It’s a very important added-on facility for our community.”

Previously Geelong hospital had the only PET scanner in Geelong, he says.

“This new scanner will relieve pressure on the public system and prevent the need for patients to travel to Melbourne to get this kind of imagery done.”

Dr Boktor has worked in nuclear medicine for more than 15 years, and manages the Lake Imaging’s nuclear medicine and PET Victoriawide.

For him the job is all about identifying cancers quickly, so patients get the best treatment as soon as possible.

“It’s very rewarding when you diagnose the problem and hence how to solve it,” he says.

A PET scan uses nuclear tracers to create a 3D image, which detects cancers and tracks their spread throughout the body, by assessing metabolic activity.

Founded in 2002, Lake Imaging is part of Integral Diagnostics, the fourth largest radiology provider in Australia.

Its team of expert radiologists and highly qualified technical, nursing and support staff are committed to providing the highest level of

With 40 years in the business, Barwon Tyre Centre’s Graeme McMahon has its customers’ tyre needs covered.

Graeme has watched the industry evolve to offer the large variety of brands and types available today.

“I’ve seen plenty of changes in the tyre industry in that time,” he said.

“We used to have five manufacturers in Australia. There are 40 different brands now - if not more.”

Graeme purchased Barwon Tyre Centre eight years ago and works beside his son Luke, who has followed in his footsteps since the age of 14.

“He’s done a mechanical apprenticeship so he can do both the tyre and mechanical side of things,” Graeme said.

Graeme said he takes the time to find out his customers’ requirements and financial situation.

He has everything from “entry level” to top brand tyres.

The company also does mechanical work, including major and minor services.

“The personalised service is what we pride ourselves on,” he said.

“A lot of our customers are repeat business and we get to know them by their name.”

Graeme, 56, hopes his son can take over the family owned business when he retires.

“But only if he behaves himself,” he joked.

The business has sponsored Camp Quality for eight years and supports the Belmont Lions Football Club and the Belmont and Highton bowls clubs.

Graeme is also keen “help the local schools” by with work experience and currently employs a local apprentice.

Jaguar is running hot right now, not only with victories in major awards, but also new models seemingly by the week. The Jaguar F-Pace SUV has taken out the World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year, now an ultra-hot SVR has just been announced.

Engineered by Jaguar LandRover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the Jaguar F-Pace SVR has a 5.0-litre V8 supercharged engine producing 540 horsepower (404kW) and 680Nm of torque. The big SUV can now leap from zero to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds, and proceed to a top speed of 283km/h where conditions (and laws) permit.

Huge 395mm front and 396mm rear brake discs help to drag speed off rapidly. The brake discs feature an advanced two piece construction on the front and rear to reduce weight, further contributing to the SVR’s agile handling.

There's a lot more to the F-Pace SVR than simply 44 per cent more power, its chassis has received a major rework to match its performance, with sharper steering and bespoke suspension.

The torque on-demand AWD system’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) control technology has been optimised to maximise the benefit of the EAD, while the software for the Adaptive Dynamics suspension, Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) and Dynamic Driving Mode are all bespoke to SVR. Engaging Dynamic mode initiates faster, more responsive gearshifts, sharper throttle responses and increased steering response for a more engaging driving experience in all conditions.

An exclusive SVR bonnet features vents to help extract hot air from the engine bay and provide added visual excitement. Aerodynamic enhancements include larger front air intakes and side fender vents that lower pressure in the wheel arches. This reduces lift to optimise high-speed stability.

By Justin Flynn If not for a Max Gawn blunder in front of goal Geelong would have started the season winless going into round four.

Of course Gawn did miss and the Cats got up in round one, but it highlights the evenness of the competition this season.

At one win and two losses, Geelong faces a St Kilda team that appears dysfunctional in its forward half and completely devoid of confidence.

However, the Western Bulldogs were in a similar situation last week and came out and defeated an Essendon team that many had earmarked for a potential top four spot come the end of the season. Joel Selwood will become Geelong longest serving captain in the club’s history when he leads the team for the 143rd time, surpassing the great Reg Hickey.

Selwood played his 200th senior game in round one. The Cats will be without Gary Ablett for at least three weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury during the loss to West Coast.

The little master hobbled off at the new Perth Stadium and took no further part in the game.

No time is a good time for an injury, but it means Ablett will have to wait until he plays his homecoming game back at Kardinia Park.

Geelong finished the contest with one fit player on the bench and did amazingly well to get itself back into the contest by three quarter time, but the Eagles ran over the top of a depleted Cats’ outfit.

However there was massive positive to come out of the match.

Young tall Esava Ratugolea announced himself on the big stage with a terrific game in the ruck and looks to be a beast in contested ball.

Pinkie snapper hit baits and lures in Corio Bay’s inner-harbour over the past week.

The spoil grounds out from Limeburner’s Point produced plenty of pinkies along with some 50cm-plus flathead. Garfish responded well to a beryl trail from the rocks, with similar tactics also working well at St Helens too. Clifton Springs was a whiting Mecca, with the Curlewis Bank in 6m off Hermsley Rd very popular.

Squid continued biting in fantastic numbers nearby, while calm nights allowed for floundering in the shallows with a light and spear. Wading anglers also caught impressive flathead, squid and garfish. Squid and flathead dominated reports form Indented Head. Barry Wood fished slowly on the drift with bluebait for a nice feed of flatties. St Leonards’ whiting action continued improving, with bag limit captures taken.

Out deeper in 20m, anglers caught gummy sharks to just over 1m, along with the odd snapper, on pilchards or fresh squid strips.

Queenscliff Harbour’s fished well for silver trevally on soft plastics. Around the corner, Bell Reef produced well-conditioned squid on size 3.5 artificial jigs. Offshore fishing was on fire last weekend. Fez Sepic was anchored in 30m off Barwon Heads when Australian salmon busted up around the boat, providing great sport and ahandy bait supply. Fez then baited up with fresh salmon, immediately catching a gummy of around 14kg.

Trelly’s Fishing World Geelong’s Peri Stravropoulos and mate Josh Whitford were anchored about 100m away when they too boated a gummy of the same size.

Anglers also reported schools of southern bluefin tuna offshore, although they were difficult to tempt. Anglers spinning the beaches and rock platforms down the coast found improved salmon fishing. Beaches like Bancoora also produced gummies after dark. Freshwater anglers who persisted with Wurdee Boluc Reservoir caught some monster redfin. Long casts with spoon-type lures did the job, with odd trout taken as a bycatch. Stony Creek Reservoir was a safe bet for brown trout to just over 1kg, with similar tactics to Wurdee working well. Anglers had fun on carp in the Barwon River at Breakwater.

Fish over 6kg gobbled up most baits, particularly super sweet corn kernels.

Next week should be worth fishing for gummies in 30m offshore if the weather permits, while the Barwon River estuary will still hold elephant fish.

Anglers can also celebrate a net-free Corio Bay during a free family event with various activities from 10am to 3pm Sunday at 711-729 Portarlington Road, Leopold.

Victoria’s top paddle surfers will hit the waves on the Surf Coast this month for the state titles.

Australian stand up paddle over 40s champion Gwen Carbone will join competitors of all ages squaring off in the championship, which includes marathon, technical and surf events.

Carbone beat Narelle Kuppers to claim the 2017 title in a nail-biting finish in NSW last November.

Entries opened recently for all divisions of the championship, and paddlers can enter into several age groups ranging from under 18 to over 60.

The action runs from 28 to 29 April at Point Impossible and other beaches along the Surf Coast.

The championship also features a 7km Community Paddle for newcomers to the sport, who wish to test themselves in an openocean paddle.
