At an age when most are retiring and choosing the couch over the treadmill, 62-year-old Lyn Thompson is hitting the road and feeling fitter than ever. Next month, on 20 May, the sexagenarian from Belgrave Heights is taking part in her 14th consecutive Great Ocean Road Marathon. At a distance of just over 44km, running the Great Ocean Road Marathon (GORM) is no easy feat. Though, Lyn is an old-hand at the event, having run in every one since its inception. She still said it challenges her. "Even though I have run it 13 times, going on 14 now, I still can't get over the beauty and challenges it offers," Lyn said. "The challenges are not to be scoffed at, there are some long hills both up and down and the final couple of kilometres or so, after the 'marathon' marker, create a new challenge because they are mostly done on the flat, when folk feel like they have already completed the marathon. "I've learned to leave myself some for that ... some energy, some drive, some headspace and some excitement. "You coax your legs and heart into a rhythm and push on 'til the finish." Lyn never misses a chance to go for a run and trains six days per week around the many tracks in the Dandenong Ranges. Though, she admits that taking care of the grandchildren sometimes takes precedence. "I run six days a week, usually in the morning unless I'm looking after grandkids, then I do it in the 'arvo'," Lyn said. "I run everywhere we go really, but I do love
Lysterfield lake or Birdsland ... there's lots of fantastic running tracks around the Dandenongs with plenty of hills that are challenging." Having started when she was 45, Lyn has been running for over 17 years and ran her first marathon in 2004, taking part in the GORM a year after. Her inspiration to get fit, she said, was the desire to reclaim her body after having nine children. "I have nine children and as the last one started school, I decided to reclaim my body and get fit ... while I went to a gym, Pinnacle, in Upwey, I enjoyed running even more. "It meant escaping into nature and feeling the freedom of that, and the freshness of, the natural environment ... I have numerous places to run now." With eight grandchildren, nine kids and pushing 63, Lyn holds no desire to slow down, hoping that this year she will be able to beat her previous personal best. Lyn is even travelling to Vietnam in September to run the Vietnam Mountain Marathon. "It's funny, I remember clearly thinking, as I did that inaugural GORM, 'wow, wouldn't it be great if I could do 10 of these and become the equivalent to a Spartan, but I would be so old'," Lyn said. "Well, after 13 of them, I don't feel old and I'm hoping this year, the 14th, I might even get a PB if all the stars align ... I am 62 and a 'grannie' of eight but still running hard."
