Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan. 149800 "Great idea for another railway station ... I believe this will be in the wrong spot, though," he said. "Another suggestion: continue the line to Coldstream. The old line is still there and needs updating. Make it a major hub for the commuters from Melba, Maroondah and Warburton highways to park at. "Open up the land between the highway and rail line immediately west of the highway to new homes." Ms Fyffe's calls have struck a chord with other residents, though, with Phillip Roper from Yarra Glen suggesting an amendment to
the plan. "This is indeed welcome news; the station is essential and will be even more important after a new subdivision adds thousands of dwellings to the area," he said. "I would, however, request that she reconsider her proposal for a double-storey carpark at Mooroolbark station. I understand where this demand comes from, but I urge the adoption of an alternative strategy." In addition, Mount Evelyn resident Anthony McAleer recently noted just how busy the line had become.

"What has happened to the Lilydale railway line? Since mid-February, all the parking spaces in the two huge car parks at Mooroolbark Station are gone by 7.30am," he said. "You get to the platform and it is full of people waiting to go on a trail, the train comes from Lilydale and it is already crowded and most seats are taken and, by the time it gets to the next stop, Croydon, all seats are gone. What has created this massive spike in rail travel? "I have been catching a train into the city from Mooroolbark for 18 years and have never seen it like this."

Victorian Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, has declared the single rail line from Mooroolbark to Lilydale has been identified as a potential candidate for future duplication. In addition, Ms Allan has stated the Government would consider pushing for a new station as part of future planning. However, no time frame or potential source of funding have been identified in Ms Allan's reply to Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe's renewed call for a second train station at Lilydale. In an address to Victorian Parliament on Wednesday 7 March, Ms Fyffe prompted Ms Allan to further investigate the proposal, saying that with the development of Cave Hill, now represented the perfect time to revisit the concept. Ms Allan has remained somewhat reserved in her response, though. "Transport for Victoria regularly monitors the public transport network and considers current and future requirements such as stabling requirements and track duplications," Ms Allan said. "The single line section from Mooroolbark to Lilydale has been identified as a potential candidate for future duplication. The need for a new station would be considered as part of future planning activities associated with duplication." Ms Fyffe last month said service upgrades along the line are a matter of urgency. "The Lilydale line is currently a single track between Mooroolbark and Lilydale, a distance of 4.7km. Duplicating this track would remove a serious bottleneck, while significantly improving the reliability of train's services," Ms Fyffe told Parliament. "Lilydale and Mooroolbark are expanding with townhouses and residential developments. Around an extra 900 people have moved in to Lilydale since 2011, that's an increase of 6 per cent." Plans are underway to create a new residential subdivision that is estimated will increase the population by as many as 3200 dwellings. Although, the Cave Hill suggestion hasn't won unanimous support, with some residents, in correspondence with the 'Mail, suggesting an alternative. Mount Evelyn resident Chris Thiele suggested continuing the line to Coldstream.
