Geelong manufacturers are sweating on the Turnbull Government’s plan for power supplies as rising prices place a “great drain” on local operators, according to their representative body.

Albert Drewett turned 100 on the same day as his great grandson Otis. (Justin Flynn) 179403

Albert Drewett’s 100th birthday was spent with family and friends, but it was also a special double celebration.

Mr Drewett turned 100 on 29 March and his great grandson Otis, turned one on the very same day - that’s 99 years difference.

The family celebrated at a special lunch at Ocean Grove Hotel.

Mr Drewett is WWII veteran, who served in Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Greece, Crete, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and New Guinea where he was at one of the Peace Treaty signings with the Japanese at the end of the War. Mr Drewett grew up in the Mallee and after the War he owned the general store in Mooroolbark.

He then ran the local newsagency as the township grew.

Mr Drewett has lived in Ocean Grove since 2012 and moved into Homestyle Sea Views Manor last November.

On his birthday Sea Views gave him a special breakfast of bacon and eggs, then a morning tea where the cook made three sponges with a ‘1’ and ‘0’ and ‘0’ on each.

During his life he has played cricket, football and golf, being captain and president of the Croydon Golf Club, where he became a life member in 1986. He is also a devout Melbourne Demons supporter.

Mr Drewett thoroughly enjoyed his lunch and afternoon at the Ocean Grove Hotel, being surrounded by family, some of who had travelled from interstate and overseas.

Sharing the occasion with his youngest great grandson, Otis, made it very special for him.

Mr Drewett has three children, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Tourism verging on ‘$1b industry’ here Tourism is about to become a $1 billion business in greater Geelong as visitation growth continues outstripping projections, according to a local industry boss.

Spending hit $902 million last year as 5.1 million tourists flocked to the region, said Tourism Geelong and Bellarine executive director Roger Grant.

“We’re seeing growth right across the board,” he told the Indy.

“Geelong and Bellarine visitation grew to 5.1 million people, which was up 7.1 per cent, and our guests stayed 4.6 million nights, which was a $13 per cent increase.

“To quote Paul Keating, what a beautiful set of numbers.”

Mr Grant talked up the local industry as new data showed statewide growth in tourism.

Tourism Research Australia found that the sector generated 214,500 jobs last financial year, an increase of 7.6 per cent. Tourists spent almost $25 billion over the 12 months, up eight per cent.

Domestic and international visitations were both up for Victoria, the data showed.

Mr Grant said greater Geelong’s international tourist numbers were growing particularly fast on the back of an increase in foreign stu-

Foreign visitors now accounted for close to 20 per cent of local tourism business, he said.

“We have over 3000 international students in Geelong now. During their time in Geelong their family and friends come out to see them, and that’s continued to really boost the sector.

“We’ve seen significant changes in international visitation, not only in the countries they come from but what they do when they’re here.

“The Chinese market has really matured,

where they’re becoming really adventurous and want experiences rather than just looking at things. They want to engage in activities, eat out at restaurants, go to the beach, shop for pleasure and have that real visitor experience.”

Mainland China was now the region’s number-two market for foreign visitors behind the UK, Mr Grant said.

“But that’s with a bullet. At this rate China will take over pretty quickly.”

The beginning of international flights between Avalon Airport and Kuala Lumpur this year promised further rapid growth in Asian tourism, Mr Grant said.

He expected the growth in international business to grow total visitations beyond seven million in the next 12 years and revenue “well and truly beyond $1 billion”.

“But if you look at where we are already, we’re going to pass the $1 billion mark sooner than that.

“The data for our visitor economy is so much better than we anticipated in our previous strategy from just three or four years ago that we’ll have to go back and rework the projections."

The sector now employed 5315, he said, up 19 per cent on the previous year thanks to a revenue increase of 17 per cent.

Bikes bungle Stolen motorcycles have fallen out the back of a trailer at North Shore Railway Station after bumbling crooks burgled a shed in Corio, according to police.

Kitties go in cat cleanout

Mourning for ‘cheeky’ star Geelong is mourning the death of Dean McInnes, a member of popular local children’s entertainment group The Mik Maks.

Mr McInnes, 32, died suddenly on Easter Monday.

The group, which described Mr McInnes as the "cheeky" Mik Mak, announced his death on Facebook.

“Dear Mik Mak Family," the group posted.

"It is with greatest sadness we let you know that today Dean passed away.

"His passing was sudden and we are devastated.

"The Mik Maks will therefore not be performing for period of time. We will be communicating further details soon.”

The announcement shocked The Mik Maks’ thousands of fans.

More than 1300 messages of condolences and grief have been were posted on the band’s Facebook page in the following days.

The Mik Maks have build a large fan base

around Australia, including a particularly devoted following in Geelong.

The band comprised Dean and brothers Joel and Al. They last performed on Good Friday at Inverleigh and Easter Saturday at Torquay.

Mr McInnes underwent surgery in December last year to remove an abscess from his brain.

He returned to the stage earlier this year after his recovery.

Mr McInnes was also a 2009 premiership player for East Geelong.

"Deano was a great bloke and a brilliant and tough player who was instrumental in our drought breaking premiership win against Bell Post Hill swapping between CHF and the ruck," the club posted on its Facebook page.

"He also got back to play a few solo tunes at the club every now and then as well.

"He will be sorely missed and the East Geelong Football and Netball Club passes on its condolences to Dean’s brothers Joel and Brian and their families at this tough time."

Staff at Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) are positively purring over the success of their special adoption week campaign at their Moolap centre.

Adorable adults and cutie kittens are walking out the doors of the centre to their forever homes during the special Clear PAWS for GAWS campaign.

Between Tuesday and Thursday staff reported a doubling in adoption rates.

“It's been an absolutely terrific response so far, with 35 cats and kittens finding homes in two days,” community engagement officer, Julia Ladgrove said.

“And while we're thrilled with the response so far, we really hope we're going to see a lot more people come through our doors this weekend.”

Cats and kittens are half price until the end of the special promotion.

The centre is open from 10am to 3pm Saturday and from 1pm to 4pm Sunday.

Volunteers and staff at GAWS work hard to provide clean safe environments for their feline friends but nothing can substitute for the love and security of being with their own forever families.

GAWS chief vet Dr David Pullen said the volunteers did an excellent job providing care and a healthy and clean environment but the shelters could be a stressful experience for fastidious felines.

It wasn’t hard to identify the sentimental favourite for the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach this week.

Homemade signs typically proclaiming ‘Go Mick’ appeared everywhere, from fences to trees, the side of houses and T-shirts at the event itself.

The message appeared everywhere, along the Great Ocean Road drive to the contest site, around Jan Juc and even in the depths of Torquay’s sprawling suburbia.

Visitors would have struggled to find any encouragement for anyone other than the three-time world champion as he prepared to bow out of competitive surfing at the conclusion of Bells.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson certainly did her best to wring the most out of the Federal Government’s announcement this week that it would establish a Naval Shipbuilding College.

She spruiked the opportunities for locals in a statement headlined ‘Corangamite Students Un-

The college would provide her constituents with a “career pathway” into Australia’s pending $90 billion program for building navy ships, Ms Henderson proclaimed.

Possibly, but the more likely explanation is his long involvement in physical activity.

The now-nonagenarian from Newtown was something of an athlete, right from his teens as a champion schoolboy runner through to his decades-long membership of Geelong’s Gym, which only ended in his mid-80s.

A Double Take correspondent says Des is expecting a special guest today for a joint celebration.

Former bakery employee Betty Dangerfield, the grandmother of Cats star Patrick, has also just turned 90.

The manufacturing sector is Geelong’s third largest employer and produces the city’s highest economic output, according to Enterprise Geelong statistics. The sector produced $9.6 billion a year, more than a third of Geelong’s $26.2 billion annual economic output.

But Geelong Chamber of Commerce, with more than 900 members, said in November that higher power costs were hurting beyond local manufacturers.

“A lot of our members have raised concerns from the point of view of their day-to-day operations,” said chamber chief Bernadette Uzelac.

The concerns come as the Turnbull Government develops its National Energy Guarantee, effectively the government’s policy on

“The expansion of Avalon Airport for international flights, ongoing export success in carbon manufacturing and the strong innovation drive of our local manufacturers will attribute to further growth for the Geelong region.”

The reported return to growth in Geelong manufacturing follows major setbacks in previous years, including the closure of Ford’s factory at North Geelong and the end of Alcoa’s aluminium production on Pt Henry.

Port bracing for ‘tsunami’ STUDY: GeelongPort chief Brett Winter says ports can play a role meeting Australia's growing freight burden admid growing onshore congestion.

“We have 77 ports strategically placed around our island nation that are capable of absorbing the pressure of our growing country. With the right regulatory environment our ports can reduce city congestion, remove

unnecessary long-haul road movements and open up regional areas to more business and growth.

“Ports attract economic activity and opportunity, for places like Geelong that means more investment, more business and more jobs.”

GeelongPort chief executive officer Brett Winter said local docks could play a role in meeting the freight challenges.

“With 15 berths and more than 30 hectares of available land, GeelongPort has substantial capacity to facilitate increased coastal ship-

ping and support land based logistical tasks,” he said.

“Customers want supply chain options and the blue highway can play a greater, complementary role in reducing the mounting pressure on existing road and rail infrastructure networks.”

Mr Winter said Port of Geelong’s trade and employment was forecast to increase 50 per cent by 2035, when it would handle more than 18 million tonnes of cargo and generate 3100 jobs local jobs.

A “freight tsunami” could swamp Geelong’s port with additional business over the next 12 years, according to a national industry group.

But Federal Government must make “changes” to domestic shipping legislation for port communities such as Geelong to reap the full benefits of the forecast surge in freight by 2030, Ports Australia said.

The organisation has commissioned a leading consultancy to determine how ports can help Australia manage its growing freight activities amid congestion on roads and rail lines.

The consultancy has included GeelongPort in the study as its management works through a series of upgrade projects following a boom in trade over recent years.

The study comes as port managers prepare for the arrival of a new super union covering the country’s docks.

Australia’s Fair Work Commission has approved the merger of the Maritime Union of Australia and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, prompting fears on a new wave of waterside industrial action.

Ports Australia chief executive officer Mike Gallacher overlooked the merger in his statement this week on the issues ahead for domestic freight.

“Australia is bracing for a freight tsunami, the domestic freight task is predicted to double by 2030 and we as a country need to be ready both for the challenges and opportunities,” he said.

“That is why we have commissioned Deloitte Access Economics to explore the role ports can play in lifting the freight burden, increasing Australia’s competitiveness and reducing costs for Australian consumers and businesses.

Authorities have refused to reveal whether Geelong was among four regional Victorian areas where tests detected a “highly concerning” increase ice use.

Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission revealed the wastewater testing results this week but declined to reveal to the Indy whether Barwon Water was involved, saying that only state and regional data was available for release.

Barwon Water also baulked at revealing whether it was involved despite allowing the Penington Institute to test local wastewater for a 2014 study on methamphetamine use.

The institute’s report indicated that ice had become the predominate form of methamphetamine, to the point where the less-potent ‘speed’ variety had practically disappeared.

Criminal intelligence commission chief Michael Phelan expressed concern for regional Victoria after releasing the fourth annual report from the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program this week.

“It is highly concerning to see methylamphetamine (ice) consumption on the rise in regional sites in Victoria,” Mr Phelan said.

“This destructive drug is having a terrible impact not only on users, but on families, first responders, health practitioners and the community more broadly.”

The data indicated that ice use was increasing in regional areas but decreasing in capital cities, Mr Phelan said.

He was pleased to note a decrease in the use of heroin and MDMA across both regional and metropolitan Australia during the study period, from August to December 2017.

“The National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program provides a clear picture of changing

trends in the consumption of methylamphetamine and 11 other drugs across Australia,” Mr Phelan said.

“Armed with this information, government, health and law enforcement agencies can better target policy and operational responses and reduce the impact of drugs in our society.”

The report also provided “conservative estimates” of the weight of drugs consumed in tested areas, Mr Phelan said.

“We estimate that over 8.3 tonnes of methylamphetamine is consumed in Australia each year, as well as over three tonnes of cocaine, 1.2 tonnes of MDMA and 700 kilograms of heroin.

“Such estimates can then be compared with other data, such as the weight of drugs seized by law enforcement, to further enrich our collective understanding of these drug markets and identify the most effective supply, demand and harm reduction measures.”

The program monitored 45 wastewater “sites” across Victoria. Six were in Victoria, two of which were in Melbourne.

The program tested for 12 substances in wastewater from 54.3 per cent of the national population.

In Victoria the program also determined that: Nicotine and alcohol remained the highestconsumed substances; Average cocaine consumption decreased in capital cities increased in regional areas; Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory had the highest average capital city heroin consumption in the country; and Victoria had the highest average regional consumption of oxycodone in the country.

Training for train ‘incidents’ Local emergency services are training with V/ Line on responding to “rail incidents”.

Police, the SES, CFA and Ambulance Victoria were all involved in the first Geelong training session on Tuesday and would attend another this weekend, V/Line said.

The operator would conduct further sessions with emergency services at Traralgon and Bendigo later this month.

Knowing how to access trains, tracks and rail reserves during emergencies was “critical”, said V/Line chief operating officer Carol-Anne Nelson “Safety is V/Line’s number one priority and these sessions are an opportunity to discuss and demonstrate how the various emergency

services would safely respond to rail incidents,” she said. “This includes raising awareness of potential hazards on a train, the track or in the rail reserve, which could occur at anytime and anywhere on our regional network.

“We do everything we can to minimise incidents on the network but it’s important our emergency services are prepared and confident in the event something does happen.”

Positive feedback on the first training sessions in other parts of Victoria last year prompted V/Line to run more this year, Ms Nelson said.

LETTERS Fix schools, fix suburbs The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics research, showing Norlane, Corio and Whittington as Geelong’s most disadvantaged suburbs (Geelong Indy, 30 March), needs to be acted upon immediately.

Education was one of the key factors listed as attributing to disadvantage and it’s clear that government schools in these suburbs deserve much more assistance.

Both the state and federal governments can improve this situation instantly by employing increased numbers of teachers and teacher-aides and by making class sizes much smaller.

As well, these government schools need extra fulltime support staff such as psychologists, welfare workers, chaplains and nurses.

It is also important to note that significant numbers of students in these suburbs are not engaging with mainstream education and there is an urgent demand for more alternative learning programs that tap into their abilities and strengths.

The education department needs to set these programs in motion, which will require assistance from state and federal governments, Geelong council and youth agencies in our community.

Sitting back and doing nothing will only lead to growing disadvantage, which will in turn lead to increased crime and violence.

Understandably, I can’t imagine the people of Geelong feeling good about that.

Eren the MP they deserve I don’t know about any ‘pub test’, since I haven’t been inside one for a long time, but if Member for Lara John Eren expects he can allow his latest indiscretion (Geelong Indy, 23 February) to slide then he is probably right.

I think his electorate has been far too forgiving of his antics since he tipped out the decent and honourable Peter Loney.

It’s a pity the electors of Lara have such low standards.

In my view they are the perfect example of the failure of compulsory voting.

Australia is a tolerant and largely well-informed country with a strong regard for democracy and justice, but not always. Sustained dysfunction in many parts of the world is a reminder that we’re lucky. Democracy can be fragile.

An independent ABC has a central role in not only entertaining and educating us but in democratising us.

While mistakes may occur, the ABC remains one of the most trusted institutions in Australia.

Without a strong ABC, our political processes would be less transparent, participative and informed.

Stop being divisive Before the politically correct crowd tried changing history, our Aboriginals lived a tough, brutal and sometimes miserable life before white settlement.

They had to hunt to survive, spearing, clubbing or stoning animals to death.

In wet seasons they were often unable to light fires to cook or keep warm.

They had only native-animal skins as clothes to protect them from the cold.

In most cases they had only grass or a bark hut for shelter.

Nobody knows how many died in cold, wet conditions. Only the toughest could have survived the cold snaps in some areas.

I have seen sheep die by the thousands in cold weather.

Aboriginals had no calendars or written language but they had over 2000 dialects, making many tribes natural enemies who fought over water holes, hunting grounds and food while raiding and stealing from each other’s camps.

Many Aboriginals marvelled at what white settlers brought: clothes, hats, knives, axes, spades, guns, corrugated iron, rope, domesticated farm animals, cereal grains, vegetables, fruit, pots, pans and buckets to carry water.

As with all settlements, there were conflicts and ruthless people on all sides. Whites killed Aboriginals, and Aboriginals killed whites.

Have faith in sceptics In last week’s Geelong Indy Derek Lipka wrote: “Some readers may remember that six or so months ago Mr Barron agreed to a meeting with me” and that “Mr Barron and his cohort received my details but found all sorts of reasons not to meet, such as I was too arrogant”.

In my 12 January email to Mr Lipka I concluded: “I am open to any arguments you may put forward, and will discuss them on their merits.

However, if you base your arguments on consensus, appeal to authority, or ad hominem attacks then don’t bother replying”.

A week later Mr Lipka made it clear that if a meeting were to be arranged there were subjects he would not debate.

I replied: “While you choose to declare certain aspects of science as totally taboo to discuss or debate because you deem them inviolate it is pointless taking this discussion further. In contrast, I have no holy cows and will discuss any subject without precondition or bias”.

In 1860 Thomas Huxley, a close colleague of Charles Darwin, wrote: “The improver of natural knowledge absolutely refuses to acknowledge authority, as such. For him, scepticism is the highest of duties; blind faith the one unpardonable sin”.

Slipped on dogma Derek Lipka told us that electric cars could be recharged by the Sun because it’s cheap.

On the same page as his letter Peter Rees gave some real facts and figures from South Australia: $800 million spent on solar electricity generation of 37MW versus $295 million spent on a gas plant to produce 210MW. Solar’s cheap? At 15 times the cost of gas?

This arithmetical slip-up was not surprising.

They who worship at the shrine of man-made climate change take the dogma on faith and forsake all reason and scientific method.

Spark up for suffragettes

By Luke Voogt Dancers aged seven to 25 and a 35-piece orchestra will recreate the struggles of the British suffragettes on stage in Geelong next weekend.

Shatter features 28 dancers from the Spark Youth Dance Company under the direction of 20-year-old Mornington Peninsula choreographer Alex Dellaportas.

Dellaportas, the group’s founder and director, said her passion for history, teaching and feminism inspired the show.

“I love the idea of teaching history but in a different way. Wwhen you teach history in dance and theatre it tends to stick more than in the classroom.”

Shatter follows the story of a young woman named Rosie, who is living through the suffrage movement.

In 90 minutes of dance the young performers recreate the struggles of the suffragettes, who smashed windows and went on hunger strikes for their right to vote.

The show features real suffragette quotes, which Dellaportas loved seeing her students learn during rehearsals.

“Most of them could now stand up and give a 30-minute presentation on the suffragettes,” she said.

Dellaportas hoped the play would give her students and audiences an insight into gender equality, a topic adults were often reluctant to discuss with children, she said.

“Gender equality is so relevant at the moment. Kids should be discussing that as soon they can talk.”

The company will perform Shatter at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 14 April as part of its first school-holiday tour.

“This is our first travelling adventure - we

She created the non-profit company in 2016 due her disappointment in “the lack” of dance opportunities on the Mornington Peninsula after finishing high school.

“Once I left school I really wanted to try choreographing,” she said.

“There wasn’t really a course or company which would allow me to make the big, crazy performances I had in my mind.

“So I thought I’ll just make it myself.”

The company now has 40 dancers and Dellaportas has taken this year off university to concentrate on running it.

She choreographed Shatter with the help of orchestra conductor Joseph Lallo, while Melbourne-based designer Tamara Keane created the dancers’ costumes.

Aussie opera stars to play ‘favourites’ Two of Australia’s best-known opera singers and friends of 35 years, Marina Prior and David Hobson, have again joined forces to tour the country.

Prior and Hobson will sing their favourite hits as they invite Geelong to their latest show The 2 Of Us on 29 April.

“It’s like you’re in our living room and we’re in yours, singing both yours and our favourite songs with a few funny career stories thrown in,” Hobson said.

The pair will sing all the “expected” opera and music theatre classics “that the audience know and love,” Prior said.

“The hardest thing is deciding which ones to cut out.”

But they will also throw in a few surprises with their eclectic mix of music styles from folk and pop to Celtic, she added.

“I also think that the audience (will be) pleasantly surprised by how relaxed we are and the informal style and amount of laughter and comedy in the show.”

Prior described the latest tour as a great “opportunity to take the show to the people” in areas she and Hobson may not visited regularly with bigger productions.

Marina Prior is best known for her lead role in The Phantom of the Opera and yearly Carols

by Candlelight performances.

In 2006, she featured in Australia’s 100 Entertainers of the Century. David Hobson has performed for Queen Elizabeth II, at the AFL Grand Final and Carols by Candlelight, and appeared on TV shows Spicks and Specks and Dancing with the Stars.

Winners will witness the amazing antics of The Circa Ensemble in a production combining world-class contemporary circus with the mood and music of a bygone era.

Upgrades boost for lodge A significant refurbishment project is underway at Alan David Lodge residential aged care facility in Grovedale.

Funding from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has enabled an upgrade of the internal and external living environment to improve comfort and amenities for residents.

A men’s shed has been established and an improved rehabilitation space with overhead hoist has been completed.

A new air-conditioning system, extra security, CCTV monitoring systems and new auto-

mated doors have also been installed.

Improvements to the dining areas and dining experience for residents are the next project to be completed.

Residents have given feedback on improvements that they felt were important to enhance their enjoyment and quality of life at Alan David Lodge, including leather work, woodwork and computer activities.

Acting co-director of aged care Martin Wischer says Barwon Health has undertaken all necessary requirements to minimise disruption during the refurbishment works,

which are expected to be completed in August.

“This will definitely enhance choice and quality of life for residents,” he says.

“They are excited to have the men’s shed set-up for activities like woodwork, leather work and computer activities.

“They’re also looking forward to having the freedom to go out into the garden at their own leisure, as well as the addition of some new activities to add to the variety on offer at Alan David Lodge.”

Geelong Barwon Simply Helping owner Harvey Lang pursued the vocation of caring because of a carer who made his dad’s last weeks at home treasured memories.

“We were having difficulty finding carers for our parents before they passed away,” he explains.

“When we found a carer that had a connection with dad that made me realise this is what we have to do.”

The carer formed a special bond with his dad, who was fighting prostate cancer, after Harvey’s mum died 18 months before.

“His last six or seven weeks before he went into a nursing home were the best he’d had in 12 months,” Harvey says.

“That bond - that’s what I’m looking for in our carers.”

Simply Helping opened in 2010, and provides care and respite for 140 NDIS clients and their carers.

“We have now been approved for aged care packages and can provide services for clients on the Bellarine Peninsula and throughout Greater Geelong,” Harvey says.

Simply Helping’s carers can support people with a disability or the elderly with everything from shopping and appointments to maintenance and gardening.

Harvey loves his job and finds the business rewarding.

“It’s just a really good thing that our carers are going to make our client’s lives that little bit easier,” he says.

“We endeavour to match our carers with our clients needs.”

Cats set for a third ‘nail-biter’ in Perth

A bit worse for wear after two cliff-hangers to open the 2018 AFL season?

It’s certainly been a nervous start to the season. A last-gasp round two win against Melbourne, followed by a thrilling one-point loss to Hawthorn in round two has tested the nerves of Geelong supporters.

The Cats take on West Coast this Sunday after a six-day break following the huge Easter Monday clash with the Hawks.

The trip to Western Australia is the toughest in AFL footy and it will be in unfamiliar surrounds for the Cats, their first game at the new Perth stadium. The Eagles were impressive last week, disposing of the Western Bulldogs by 51 points.

Geelong faces a tough month ahead. After the Eagles they meet St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium and then face top four aspirants Port Adelaide, Sydney and Greater Western Sydney.

Cats’ coach Christ Scott said the Hawks deserved to win.

“We would have been lucky to win I think. It’s two weeks in a row, [and] we could easily be sitting here 0-2 and scratching our heads a bit,“ he said. “I don’t think there’s much point comparing the two weeks, but if we focus on this game we thought we were comprehensively outplayed for big parts of the game and were able to turn it around after half-time.“ Power forward Tom Hawkins hasn’t started the season as well as he’d like, but small forward Daniel Menzel has booted eight goals in

It’s a tough task to beat the Eagles in Perth, but Sydney did it in round pm.

Geelong looks just that little bit classier and should get the job done in what could possibly be another nail biter.

Bannockburn’s Bourke in ‘proud’ placing Bannockburn racer Leigh Bourke has returned from a Victorian Speedway Council Sports Sedan state titles with a second place result against a strong local contingent.

Going into the event after two recent engine mishaps, Bourke had to put together a race-ready engine using a new engine block and all the original internal parts that were left from the first engine.

Bourke was delighted with his second place result at Alexandra Speedway. “There are some powerful cars in this field, this is not my home track and to finish second after starting 10th behind these guys, and to a driver the calibre of Damien, I am not disappointed at all. geelongindy.com.au

Bourke qualified for the 25-lap title race in 10th position, but a strong start soon had him moving up to seventh.

He was sixth by the 10th lap and then fifth at lap 15.

Bourke moved into third place by lap 21 and then on lap 23, a huge crash resulted in him moving into outright second, where he stayed after a pulsating final three laps.

Bourke now returns to competition at his club Belmont which operates the Redline Raceway venue on Mount Buninyong.

Anglers bag great break ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers did not waste one second of the nice weather over the Easter break with a spectacular variety of fish on offer.

Corio Bay’s inner-harbour was a fantastic location for pinkie snapper to 45cm along with flathead on soft plastics or pilchard fillets. Locations like the rocks at Limeburner’s Point boat ramp and Cunningham Pier were the most productive.

The fishing was also sensational at Clifton Springs where plenty of squid were taken between the boat ramp and down toward Hermsley Rd in 3m to 4m of water ideal. The jigs of choice were a size three in a white colouration.

Out just a touch deeper in 6m whiting snapped up pippies, with anglers finding bag limit captures possible. Also, drifting near the channel was a sure bet for securing a feed of flathead.

Whiting were also prolific off St Leonards in the area called Bourke St. In a little closer over the weed beds some thumping big squid were on the chew, especially for anglers fishing size 3.5 jigs on the last of the run-in tide.

Trelly’s Geelong’s Kevin Hunter was among anglers snagged a few squid at St Leonards on Saturday.

Swan Bay’s channel produced flathead, pinkies, silver trevally and garfish on the run-in tide.

Kingfish were still present in The Rip for anglers fishing the right times. Jigging or fishing fresh squid baits accounted for fish around 10kg.

Anglers also reported tuna popping up at times.

Some impressive captures were recorded offshore, with Peri Stavropoulos dropping a bait down in 30m out from Barwon Heads to boat a 16kg gummy shark.

Gone Fishing Charter’s Chris Vasilevski ventured out a little further, guiding his clients onto an awesome mako shark that gave them a run for their money.

Elephant fish finally appeared in the Barwon River estuary.

Daniel Baden and I spent a few hours fishing the estuary during Monday afternoon’s run-in tide, catching some elephants on fresh squid and pilchard baits. The bite time was small but some impressive silver trevally to 40cm made up for the wait.

Down the coast, spinning for Australian salmon was very effective as numerous fish hit the beaches.

The coast’s small estuary systems produced bream on scrub worm baits or Z-Man motor oil 2.5” Grubz.

Freshwater fishos found Lake Purrumbete fishing well for a mixed bag.

Brown and rainbow trout were boated, although not always trophy fish, while redfin were taken in large numbers once a school was located.

Next door, Lake Bullen Merri was fishing okay for Chinook salmon and rainbow trout. Trolling hard-body lures on a drop weight clip was the most effective technique.
