There's no denying the power of mother nature and there's no pleasing all people all the time. Two weeks ago the surfers were welcoming the waves resulting from nearby cyclones. This week the effects of those same big waves that gouged the sand from the beaches were not so welcome. The result was a reduction of available space for holiday makers to sit and relax on some beaches including Main Beach and the high tide taking over the road from campers travelling to North Shore for the Easter weekend. It may not always be to our liking but what happened to working with mother nature? Anyway in other news Noosa Zonta celebrated 25 years of helping others and raising more than half a million dollars while doing it. What a fantastic effort. ●

EASTER CRUSH HITS BEACH It was standing room only on Noosa Main Beach Easter Sunday when the sun came out to give residents and tourists some much anticipated beach time after recent rains. The traffic queued to enter the popular tourist spot, filling the available car parking including the Lions Park which was reopened over Easter at a fee of $20 a day. The free shuttle buses were also popular with people waiting at stops along the routes. Noosa police acting senior sergeant

John Delandelles said the tourist spot was relatively quiet across the weekend and accident free. However on Saturday night a group of 40-50 teenagers aged 14 -16 years from Coolum were discovered by police consuming liquor at the Lions Park near Hastings Street and moved on, he said. Noosa North Shore campers led to outrage on social media when 4WD vehicles took to the dunes, potentially damaging the dunes and destroying turtle nests, when

high tides mixed with a washout made the beach road impassable. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton said all stakeholders needed to come up with a solution to prevent the situation happening again. "We have to look at multiple aspects of this," she said. "Are there too many people going up? Should there be road closures? "What do we need to do to safeguard our environment and ensure the safety of people going on that stretch?" ●

More than 150 people gathered at the spit at Noosa about 5.30am on Easter Sunday for a brief service conducted by Noosa Anglican Church Reverend Mark Calder to celebrate Jesus' resurrection. A religious ceremony has been held at the site for about 20 years on Easter morning to deliver a message to the Christian followers. "We recalled the hope and joy this message brings and that through Jesus' death and resurrection any one who wants to can be forgiven and receive God's gift of eternal life with him," Rev Calder said. Doves were released at the end of the service, symbolising new beginnings and a rainbow over the river was evident as it concluded, he said. ●

INDIGENOUS PROJECT TAPS INTO CULTURAL TOURISM Work has begun to create a data bank of environmentally and culturally significant indigenous landmarks and iconic species within the Noosa Shire. The Marine Ecology Education Indigenous Corporation (MEEIC) was awarded funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) to develop multi-media information for tourism and education centred on the Noosa River and Lakes. Project facilitator Dr Simon Walker said the aim was to improve understanding of the links between the environment, local indigenous culture and native species in Noosa, and provide opportunities for developing indigenous led ecotourism ventures into the future.

"The knowledge bank can be used to engage the community and visitors in targeted learning and educational experiences in Noosa. "Information will be compiled in various forms, for example short multimedia presentations, images, video and voice recordings." The project, named the Environmental and Cultural Learning Trail, received funding of $19,500 from the NBRF grant scheme toward a broader project that aims to support indigenous led economic opportunities within the region for the Kabi Kabi people. "We have begun consulting with the local Kabi Kabi people as to what parts of the river are important," Dr Walker said.

Chair and Kabi Kabi elder, Fred Palin said the MEEIC aims to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the opportunity to reconnect and engage with their traditional and cultural landscapes. "The Kabi Kabi nation feel that it's important, not for their people but for everyone to know that the earth is alive and the spiritual bond that they feel for their country can be shared by everyone," he said. Dr Walker said resources produced from this initial stage of the project will allow additional funding to be sought through state and federal schemes, to support the development of a Kabi Kabi led ecotourism venture. n attending the annual Noosa Gift over several years I have watched Coach Mick Hooper work with the young athletes, directing them around the ground, stopping for a chat and in some cases giving last minute advice as they head for the starters line; and their response is one of good communication. Despite his quiet disposition, here is a man who has success as a constant companion.

"For us," said Mick, "the Gift would have to be the biggest meet of the year and the relationship between our coaches and the Gift organisers, Ian Smith and team, is always very good. But most important the carnival is a great opportunity for our kids to get a start in their first major event; what could be better than running in front of a home crowd." When parents are looking to support their kids in their chosen sport they first look for a good successful club. Then the first questions are, "Who is the coach and

what are his qualifications?'' Within our community the club is the Noosa Little Athletics and the head coach is Mick Hooper who is now the proud holder of the International Level 4 IAAF Qualification in Coaching; and it is this that enables Mike to coach athletes at elite levels. The tally of some 72 medals won over a ten year period at national level speaks volumes for not only this quite achiever but also his support team. It is now five years since the growth of the Noosa club made it essential for the

formation of an elite squad. ''This would enable our athletes to continue their careers without moving away; and it was done with the full support of Queensland Athletics," he said. If this was to be a success the athletes had to be confident that they would be in the hands of properly trained and certified coaches and with Mick obtaining his IAAF qualifications this was exactly what was needed. In that five year period nine athletes have been selected to represent their country in international events. And now

for the first time ever two juniors, (U/20) Zane Branco and Samantha Johnson have been selected to represent Australia at the Junior World Championships in Finland in July this year. "Their times in the selection trials were really great," Coach Hooper said. "Zane who won the 200m sprint ran a personal best of 20.68sec and Samantha finished third in the 100 hurdles in a personal best of 13.76sec. Samantha's time was fast enough to qualify her for Finland." The IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) is the highly regarded International Governing Body for the Sport of Athletics. Its president is the legendary Olympian Sarbastian Coe: and their high ranking Level 4 coaching course "is for the further development of high performance coaching." This is the level at which our coach now stands. Having completed such a comprehensive study of the art of coaching, one comes to understand the reason for Coach Hooper's success. It is indeed gratifying for parents to know that this is available at Noosas Little Athletics should their children choose athletics as their sport. "Coaching our young kids can sometimes be slow and frustrating. First of all on joining they have to learn to have fun with their friends, have a go at all types of events until finally settling on a couple that they enjoy. Then they start to win the occasional medal and this of course gives them selfconfidence; and most important of all the desire to stay in the sport. "As they get older and progress through the levels there comes the time for that serious chat. This is the time when we as coaches have to sit down discuss their ambitions and if they are serious and have the determination, fully explain what lies ahead. The acceptance of advanced training programs, selfdiscipline, dieting and above all setting their goals; and their willingness to make those personal sacrifices that will become necessary if they are to reach the top." The recent selection of Branco and Johnson to contest the Junior World Championships is an outstanding achievement and tells us that we must be doing something right. Both joined Little Athletics as U/11s. On reaching 15 we met and explained what would be required should they become serious about international competition. By continuing a well-balanced program over the years they start to peek at 19 and this is when we make them aware that selection for the Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games is now a possibility."

However these are just two of Noosas track and field people that are really starting to get great results and make people take note. Others such as, U/16 Casey Payne 300m hurdles, Leo Drake 100m sprint, U/17 Jahal Adamovskis-Kraus javelin and Amy Brice who won gold at the national titles competing in the gut wrenching three day event, the heptathlon. "With all this young talent available the problem of obtaining good junior coaches to come on board is of the utmost importance. It is something that must give our full attention,'' Hooper said. During our discussion he bought to my attention something that simply amazed me. "Did you know that one of the problems that go with international selection is a $4,000 levy which is a pre-requisite for all our young athletes selected to represent their country. Recently I discussed this with a visiting international athlete who was totally dumb founded and answered my enquiries with a question. "Why is this, they have been chosen to represent their country?" For Mike his journey through the world of amateur athletics has been totally supported by his devoted wife Val. Not only has Val given her support but she, also as a result of her commitment to Little Athletics, has been honored by being elected (three years ago) for a seat on the State Board of Directors. Early in his coaching career Mick was also recognized for his work in the Little Athletics by being named for two consecutive years 2011-12 the Queensland Coach of the Year. For Mick it seems that he was born to live the sporting life. On leaving high school at the end of year 10 he began working in a Sydney restaurant and also started playing rugby league for the Sydney Bulldog Juniors. During this period, for two successive seasons, he made the NSW U18 team playing second row and later played in the U23s; and while still working the restaurant he met Val. Sydney football was followed by a stint in England playing for Halifax and then Mansfield and following his league commitments, Mick and Val, who had also moved to England, backpacked through Europe. On returning home he decided to catch up with his brother Alan who was working at Mooloolaba. Both Mick and Val loved the coast, stayed 12 months and invested in a block of land. He continued his football playing for Maroochydore Swans and this led to his selection in Falcons. Then thinking of a career Mick decided on the services. Visiting an air force recruiting office he took the necessary papers home, but he said with a laugh, "I

Mick Hooper at the hurdles. went back next day only to find that the office was then run by the army, listened to what they had to say and joined with them." This was to be the start of a 14 year career during which time he saw service in Darwin and two deployments to Timor. During his Darwin service, Mick and Val, then happily married, became the proud parents of four children - three boys and a girl. While on military long service they returned to the Coast and while looking for a home base settled on a block in the new Noosa Banks. After settling in at Noosa Banks family life started in earnest. In summer the kids joined Noosa Nippers and winter the Pirates Rugby League. It was during this time that Micks coaching career took off. He spent nine years coaching in the junior league and on Friday afternoons

Val saw it as a family sport with emphasis on family, fun and fitness," he said.Noosa councillor Joe Jurisevic who supports the Little Athletics and has known Mick for many years said: "Micks dedication and devotion to the kids and the results he has achieved are a credit to him. It is good to see him get public recognition." It is sad but true that the despite little or no publicity, athletics carries the mantle of being the Olympics Games leading sport. However to Mick Hooper Athletics Coach, his family, support coaches and workers, your outstanding successful contribution to Noosa Athletics is noted and acknowledged. â—?

SPEEDS ALREADY LOWERED ON RIVER Maritime Safety Queensland is working with the owner of one boat sunken off Goat Island in the Noosa River and keeping an eye on another in the same vicinity. A spokesperson for the authority said they had been in contact with the boats' owners who are responsible for their vessels if they become an environmental or navigational risk. "We are satisfied the owner of one vessel is working to meet his responsibilities and the vessel is anchored with required lights," he said. "The second vessel, while unsightly, is not considered derelict. "We will continue to closely monitor both vessels although neither currently pose

a hazard to navigation or pollution risk." Maritime Safety Queensland general manager Patrick Quirk advised boaties heading to the Sunshine Coast for the holidays to also be aware of annual speed reductions that were enforced until 15 April. "Maritime Safety Queensland has set a reduced speed limit of six knots during the holiday peak," he said. "Queensland Water Police and Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers may issue on-the-spot fines for inconsiderate boaties who choose to speed. Queensland Koala Crusaders (QKC) has succeeded in its first community workshop to highlight the problems facing Noosa's koala population and enlist koala rescuers who will undertake training to help retain the iconic species, but more rescuers are sought. More than 60 people attended last month's workshop at RACV Noosa Resort to hear from experts on koala research and conservation in the region. It was part of a series of events being run by QKC and sponsored by Noosa Council. "The biggest issues are habitat loss and fragmentation, disease, dogs attacks and car accidents. The constant flow of traffic along Eenie Creek Road, Weyba Road and McKinnon Drive is particularly problematic for the koala population around Noosa. To improve the situation, the researchers, tracking teams, rescuers and health

facilities must work as a team with the local community and stakeholders," QKC president Meghan Halverson said. A rescue training day, led by Anika Lehmann from Moreton Bay Koala Rescue and Rachel Lyons from Wildcare Australia, will be held on 28 April at the Noosa District Landcare offices at Pomona Futures Centre. "We are really keen to expand the group of trained koala rescuers in the wider Noosa region so that we can provide a more efficient 24-hour local service and improve koala outcomes," Ms Lyons said. "Our next workshop will provide participants with general wildlife rescue and first aid knowledge, along with specific information, rescue techniques, practices and procedures for koalas" Further training, including tree climbing, will be offered later in the year. ●

RAISING UP OUR WOMEN The Zonta Club of Noosa last month celebrated 25 years of work to raise awareness of women's rights, to improve the status of women and to put an end to violence against women and children. In quarter of a century the club has raised more than $550,000 toward local projects and the fulfilment of international commitments. Club president Jan Comins said this year the club upgraded the Shine Houses initiated by Zonta 12 years ago to provide a safe haven for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Special guests at the anniversary held at Flux Restaurant included Noosa MP Sandy Bolton, Zonta District 22 Governor Ansmarie van Erp, Zonta Area 1 Director Lyn Agnew, past Zonta Noosa presidents and members. ●

NIFF PLANS A BUMPER FEST With four more weeks to go before the Noosa International Film Festival's Short Film Competition closes, more than 100 entries have been received. Festival curator Holly Pittman said it looked like numbers would exceed last years entries and the breadth of films was impressive. "There is a strong contingent of Australian shorts, but Iranian films are again well represented, as well as films from Germany, the UK, the Ukraine, Spain and Portugal," she said. Fifteen curators from the Noosa community having been watching the short films and are amazed at their diversity. Holly said there was still time for filmmakers to submit their films with entries closing on 14 May. The festival is also recruiting for volunteers for its marketing and design team. "It's so much fun being part of a team that loves film and is committed to delivering a fantastic festival for our region," Holly said. Council will this month begin preconstruction work on the Hilton Terrace/ Ernest Street intersection upgrade. Contractors will relocate Energex and Telstra infrastructure in preparation for the new roundabout and Hilton Terrace road upgrade to begin in the second half of the year. Council said motorists should expect minor delays from late May onwards. ●

MORE WATER STATIONS Unitywater, with Noosa Council, is continuing to install fixed, filtered water refill stations as part of its Back To Tap campaign to drink tap water instead of plastic bottled water. Last year four refill stations were installed at First Point, one at the Hastings Street end of Park Road and two along Gympie Terrace at Noosaville. Another eight are to be installed at Noosaville, Noosa Heads, Cooroy, Peregian Beach, Pomona, Cooran and two at Tewantin. ●

THEY’RE STRONG YES, BUT SILENT NO When I first heard it I found it hard to believe. More men died from prostate cancer then women died of breast cancer; but now all indications are that it is true. For some reason it seems that the press or those responsible have never dug right in to push the matter and organize more support to assist those medical teams who, at times must feel like a voice in the male wilderness. However with men now starting to discuss their health problems over a beer with their mates like never before, that old image of strong silent male is starting to lose its glow: it is now time to push that major factor of self-awareness Some say that knowledge is power but in this case for the ill-informed male, knowledge can be life. Within the boundaries of this great community a group of men some of whom we could call survivors, have banded together and now started what could be known as the Awareness Movement awareness of the fact that if found early it can be beat and awareness of that age old problem, financial support to our research teams Two local men John Little and Don Stallmen (and there are others) who have concerned themselves with both these problems are addressing the matter of finance from an angle that can only be described as different. To create financial interest they have organized a group of five people, themselves plus three friends, Wendy Cochrane, Peter Bell and Michael Walsh, to team up and hike the Jatbula Trail. The Trail which is located in the

Trailblazers Wendy Cochrane, John Little, Don Stallmen, Peter Bell and Mike the dog.

Nitmiluk National Park and follows the western edge of the Arnhem Land Escarpment is a 62 km hike with an expected walking time of 5-6 days. From this they are hoping to achieve two things. The first is to be able to say they have walked the Jatbula Trail and second and perhaps most important is to arouse enough interest in this cause that people will come forward as sponsors, "with all monies going straight to the research teams." For John there is also another personal

interest. Some time ago he discovered that his great grandfather Jack Little had walked the track back in 1870 while working as a foreman on the Adelaide to Darwin Overlander Telegraph. However this desire was delayed by a few health problems, a pacemaker, dodgy back and two knee replacements. ''Twelve months ago I could hardly walk and was flat out carrying 2kg. Now its 14 kg and I am hiking three hours, bike riding and swimming; so now it's all stations go."

The sponsorship is also starting to happen. So far they have received $9300 and the Katmandu Adventure stores have outfitted the team with gear ranging from hats through to backpacks to the extent of $3000. As the owner and founder of the business, I have more than 20 years’ experience in the industry and am a Certified Practicing Marketer with the Australian Marketing Institute. I get to work with some fantastic clients that are doing amazing things both in our local community and further afield. I also do quite a bit of volunteer work as I feel it is really important to give back to our local community. Firefly Solutions provides all aspects of marketing services but by far the most popular in recent years is social media management and affordable websites. We also do a lot of the traditional marketing such as advertising, flyers and media releases, which remain an important part of the marketing mix. We also do event management and specialise in free community events like the Australian Body Art Festival, Christmas in Cooroy and Cooroy Fusion Festival. Event management involves a lot of planning, co-ordinating and communication; it’s a demanding job but it is also very rewarding when you see the results.

With all but one of my staff members being female, I believe that I provide an environment in which women who work for me can strive to achieve their goals, and work towards their own business development in a positive and forward thinking atmosphere. This is an opportunity that I provide to all my staff equally, and there is always an equal opportunity for progression

with Mazda as a spare parts delivery driver. Over the years, with hard work, I became the spare parts manager and the only woman in the business. My thoughts were “if I know what goes into a car then I would be able to sell new cars”, as I had the product knowledge. From there, my husband and I started a mechanical workshop in the late ’80s, which we owned for 14 years before selling and moving to the lovely Cooroy. We bought Cooroy Spare Parts in 2002 and after my husband passed away I continued managing the business. It will be 16 years in Easter this year. It has been a challenge working in a male-dominated industry, but you can’t let anything stop you. If you love what you do, give it all you’ve got. My advice for other women in business is never just work for money, work for the enjoyment and satisfaction of what you do.

I have been in the business world for about 30 years, in customer service, management, and now owning my own business. After rearing two wonderful children, now 18 & 21 years, I purchased the Cooroy Fish & Chip shop and we have been operating for five years.

We woman are amazing creatures and are able to fit many things into our daily lives. But as amazing as we are, we can still be very critical of ourselves, and other women. Women in business today face many challenges in an ever-changing world.

My business journey started alongside my husband in the Poolwerx Franchised business for the Tewantin to Gympie region. We started with a humble, single van operation with 11 clients. I worked part-time during the day, while completing bookwork at night and caring for our two children. We purchased the Noosa franchise within the first few years and continued to flourish, growing to two retail sites, at Cooroy and Noosa Civic and four vehicles on the road. All while our little family has grown from two to four children.

Ball tampering has been around for years, but rather naively I always assumed it was only the OTHER teams, not my team, not Australia, we are the good guys, and they would never lower themselves to that shameful extreme. Like many parents, in the past I have enjoyed coaching this wonderful game to our kids and keeping it in the right spirit. I do feel sorry for today’s coaches who will have to try to explain to those heartbroken kids that their idols are actually cheats, and are now facing the arduous task of trying to restore faith in the game. No doubt, with time the scandal will be forgotten and forgiven, but many like myself will never look and feel the same about those players who have shamed our national team. NOISE ISSUE SUBJECTIVE Just as art is in the eye of the beholder, “noise pollution" is a subjective thing, apparently. Anyone fortunate enough to have attended an AC/DC concert would have heard that message loud and clear, but in his letter (NT 15 March) Dr John Spence tells us that aircraft movements, particularly helicopters and even paragliders, represent “potentially harmful" noise pollution. Well as far as I am aware, they have not yet developed or mass-produced a battery or a rubber band reliable enough to power the long range military aircraft, surf patrol and emergency services helicopters, passenger jets and other aircraft using our coast skies so I for one am prepared to tolerate any brief noise as they fly overhead. That includes the helicopter training company (Becker’s) fleet which is being forced to move. Dr Spence cites the official reason for that as airport management refusing to renew their licence “because of the imminent airport expansion“, but a senior company employee in local media recently blamed complaints about noise “and the squeaky wheel getting the grease" as the real reason the Sunshine Coast’s economy was facing a $57 million loss. LEGALITY THE ISSUE In response to Andrew Anderson (NT 29/3) The issue here Andrew is mine and others’ dead forebears have been accused by the Noosa Parks Association of trawling illegally in waters including Weyba Creek which has historically been closed permanently to commercial fishing, including prawn trawling. They had no legal right/ permit licence, equipment and other logistics to trawl for fish and prawns by the 1930s. To also accuse them by saying they decimated Noosa’s oyster reefs, brands them as marine environment vandals. Even In modern day commercial fishing, there is still no legal endorsement for trawling for fish in the Noosa River. That is the issue sir. No publicity stunt, just simply trying to get the science and referencing sources the NPA rely on to make these allegations. Trevor Clarey Boreen Point

RESPECT IS LEARNT, NOT LEGISLATED Well Tim Fielding might ask what the rules for cyclists are (NT 29 March). They are, to be brief, ambiguous. A cyclist can choose whether to ride in a bicycle lane or not. Bicyclists are legally allowed to use the same lane that cars are. However, the law says that cyclists must ride as far to the left as possible on single lane roads, such as the one on Sunrise Road. To make it all murky, though, bicyclists can ride two abreast. Does that contradict staying as far left as possible on a single lane road? The law also says that cyclists should not be a traffic hazard by riding into the path of vehicles. Are these cyclists a hazard? Very vague. I ride between 40 and 150 km most weeks as a commuter. So, I ride alone and don’t face the decision to ride abreast. I always ride as

far left as possible but I know that there are many places, such as the old Bruce Highway between Eumundi and Nambour, where there is no white line and I have no choice but to ride in the main lane. Most drivers are 100 per cent courteous and will overtake me with a 1.5 metre space and wait until it is safe. However, there are a very few drivers who experience cyclists such as those in your photos and paint us all with the same brush. These are the drivers I fear because their anger is demonstrated by calling out abuse, driving too close and at speed or even trying to run me off the road. These people are crazy but I can understand their rage when groupies do not respect other drivers on the road. The cyclists in your photos may not be breaking the law but are showing arrogance and disrespect by not letting following cars pass safely. They may not be able to ride to the left of the white line because it may be too narrow and might be dangerous, but they could ride single file nearer the line and not impede traffic. I would encourage recreational riders to do that more often. Drivers who cannot drive at the speed limit and hold up a line of traffic are equally arrogant and disrespectful of other drivers. Bicycle laws could change a little to encourage more mutual respect between cyclists and motorists, but you can’t legislate for respect. That has to be instilled. Steve Hall Cooroy

REFRESHER NEEDED Clearly Tim Fielding is overdue for a refresher course in Queensland’s road rules if he doesn’t know what to do when approaching a group of cyclists on Sunrise Road (page18, Noosa Today, 29 March). This road is narrow, windy and has several parts where overtaking cannot be done safely, hence the double lines. It also lacks sealed shoulders. The cyclists shown in the picture have sensibly chosen to cycle two abreast, as they are legally entitled to do, in order to deter reckless drivers trying to squeeze past. Changes to the road rules in recent years mean that overtaking vehicles are now allowed to cross

May I be among one of the many responses you are likely to receive from your question posed by Tim Fielding (with associated photos) “What are the rules here?” regarding a group of cyclists on Sunrise Road. The “law” is that cyclists can ride two abreast and motorists when overtaking must keep one metre clear in speed limit zones up to 60km/h and 1.5 metres beyond. When safe to do so motorists can cross unbroken centre lines in need to maintain that distance. As the self-appointed safety person in the group with which I cycle I would expect on this road in fine weather the group should ride single file and as close as safely possible to the left side. In this instance with wet conditions and no significant cycle lane clear of sticks, stones and litter the safest place to be for cyclists is where they are. The motorist has the advantage of power steering, power brakes, air-conditioning and windscreen wipers and can even sip on a cup of coffee while seated in armchair-like surrounds. The “rule” for motorists is be patient and wait for an opportunity to overtake, which I trust is what occurred on this occasion. ARTS GUIDING YOUTH I would like to comment on the spectacular show (Narnia, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) last Saturday created by the Little Seed Company and their students. A group of about 25 youngsters aged between 10 and 18 created a performance at the Majestic Theatre Pomona which was mind-blowing. The young orchestra composed their own backing music, the youngsters did their own sound and lighting, make-up, choreography and stage management. Their teachers not only teach them acting and production techniques they also teach them teamwork and respect for their mates and for adults. The children use their time constructively instead of looking at a screen all day. They were confident, polite, supportive of each other and a breath of fresh air. This show really shows how important the arts can be for young people as it improves their life and life skills in so many ways. I look forward to their next show. Cherry Bright Pomona

AUCTIONEER HAS THE FINAL WORD FOR Gordon Macdonald, calling auctions full-time has always been the end game. Founder of the independent auctioneering firm The Auction Group, Gordon shares his passion for the job, and some insights into the business, with journalist Tessa Mapstone. Q. Tell us a bit about your background. A. I’m originally from Glen Innes in NSW. I started my real estate career with a stock and station agency so right from the offset I was in an office with auctioneers. I had an opportunity to start calling auctions inside a clearing sale environment. Over time I was given the opportunity to call some real estate auctions for vacant blocks of land out of town. I remember auctioneering land for $4000-$5000 and thinking how good life was. I thought I’d made it. Now our average sale price is in and around $800,000. I’m calling 60 plus auctions a month in multiple market places, from Noosa and the Sunshine Coast to Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and as far south as Grafton. I’ve even been flown to Auckland a couple of times. Q. What makes a good auctioneer? A. You need to be approachable and you need to be able to provide clarity because you’re dealing with a highly emotional environment. We don’t get caught up in that. We’re a third party; we’re unbiased. We take our neutrality very seriously. Communication, awareness, ability to read the crowd, to be very present in the moment, these are all the qualities required. Q. What is it you love about your job? A. I love to negotiate. I love putting the impossible deals together and I love the short time frame that I have. When the hammer falls or you put together an

Would you agree that there’s a certain element of performance to the role? A. People come down to auctions for all sorts of reasons, whether they’re thinking about buying or thinking about selling, but there’s another reason they come down.

LONG TIME ON THE ROAD It's been two and a half years on the road for Women Like Us comedians Ellen Briggs and Mandy Nolan. The show has found a unique niche in the comedy market, speaking to a demographic of women who don't always hear their stories told on stage. The two call themselves 'the bogan woman's thinking woman and the thinking woman's bogan'. Women Like Us isn't just a comedy show. It has become a movement! The show is an hour of stand-up comedy, half an hour a piece by these powerful, no-holds-barred, tell-it-how-it-is pin-up girls for what they call Real Women. NILLA'S KELP NOODLE SALAD BY HOLLIE HARRIS Thanks to Nilla from VanillaFood in Belmondos for sharing this simple and healthy dish with our readers this week. Kelp Noodle Salad INGREDIENTS 1 packet of kelp noodles (450gr) 1 handful green beans, julienned 2 small cucumbers, julienned 1 bunch bok Choy, finely shredded Small bunch of coriander (one big handful), chopped 1 Cup edamame beans 2-3 sprigs green shallots, chopped (optional) 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds 1/2 cup cashews handful of mint leaves Dressing: 1 tbsp ginger, minced 1 fresh chilli, minced (according to how hot you like it, you may want to leave the seeds in)

15-MINUTE BAKED EGG AND SMOKED SALMON

For a crackin' good brekkie try these quick and easy baked eggs cooked in avocado with smoked salmon. INGREDIENTS 3 avocados, halved, seeds removed 6 slices smoked salmon 6 large eggs 2 tablespoons plain Greek-style yoghurt 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives, plus extra sprigs to serve Extra virgin olive oil, to drizzle Coles bakery LOW GI seeds & grains Vienna loaf, to serve METHOD STEP 1

3/4 cup crushed peanuts 3 tbsp tamari 1 heaped tbsp tahini 1/4 cup toasted sesame oil Juice of half a lemon 1 Tablespoon honey Salt to taste INSTRUCTIONS Drain the noodles and let sit over the sink and drip all the excess water out. Using a large bowl, add the beans, edamame, cucumber, coriander, bok choy, shallots, sesame seeds, cashews and mint. In a jar, combine all dressing ingredients and give it a good shake. Add in the drained kelp noodles and the dressing to the bowl. Toss through and serve. I like to dress it with a few more nuts and seeds on the top. ●

Heat oven to 220C/200C fan-forced. Line a baking tray with baking paper. STEP 2 Scoop out centre of avocado to makes holes large enough for eggs. Reserve scooped-out flesh. Place avocado on prepared tray. Line holes of avocado with smoked salmon. Crack 1 egg into each hole. Season. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until whites are just set. STEP 3 Meanwhile, process reserved avocado flesh, yoghurt and lemon juice until smooth. Season. Stir in chives. STEP 4 Sprinkle baked eggs with extra chives. Drizzle with oil. Serve with avocado mixture and bread.

The countdown is on for the Noosa's first Vegan Festival, a community event aimed to make veganism more mainstream.The event will be jam-packed with speakers, market stalls, live music, exhibitors, performances and of course plenty of delicious food. MORE SUCCESS FOR MARTIAL ARTS For the Sunshine Coast Martial Arts Shotokan Karate and Fitness Institute training team, led by Chief Instructor Bryan Dukas, their efforts are definitely not in vain. At the recent Queensland championships held in Brisbane they came home to Noosa with an incredible tally of 25 gold medals, 14 silver and 19 bronze. Then to top this they were, for the third year in a row, named the Queensland Karate Club of the Year. Situated in 7-9 Gibson Rd Noosa this is definitely a club whose achievements not only bring success of the highest order to our community but also does so in a fashion that indicates pride of achievement and definitely makes the parents of the younger age groups happy to be involved. ''We took a mixed team that ranged from rookies to members with international experience. Our training program plus a training camp in Japan then later on followed by a two day seminar we conducted here at our club certainly paid dividends," said Sensei (teacher) Brian Dukas. The local seminar conducted by his father Mike an 8th Dan from South Africa was held in November and well attended. The heavy emphases placed on concentration, self-discipline and fitness certainly payed off.

The titles covered all aspects of competition; individual Kata, individual Kumite (sparring) as well as team Kata. The Kata is movements that are carried out to a set pattern and emphasizes balance, coordinated, movement AND CONCENTRATION. From the medal winners selection trials for the state team will be conducted and those selected will represent their state at the National Titles in Caloundra 2-5 August. Apart from these two 10yr old girls Caitlin Corbett and Dannica Starkie have already been selected for the National Team to compete in the Oceanic Cup in New Zealand in June. "Last year the National were in Sydney, this year Caloundra, and next year Tasmania," said Sensei Dukas. "By shifting the titles it gives all states a fair go and also helps to maintain a high standard of the arts throughout the country. It also helps attract international competition from such countries as New Zealand, New Caledonia, Fiji and Bosnia. Also all our local martial art schools are now being fully accredited by the Queensland Karate Association (QKA). It is interesting to note that all clubs fully support the Anti-Bullying Campaign. With their emphases on mental training, respect, manners and the avoidance of violent behavior it is hoped that this will contribute to a reduction of this problem in our schools. ●

AROUND THE GROUNDS COMPETITION IN EARNEST BY DOUG MCCONNELL Now is the time when teams are formed and the Pennant and Shield competitions commence. Thanks to the members with horticultural talents as well as a love of the game the croquet lawns have been fertilised, cored and cared for to remain one of the more beautiful croquet facilities in Queensland. This season Noosa is fielding one team in each of the Pennant race and one in the Shield competition with Pennant players having lower handicap rankings than those playing Shield.  Results are decided on a matches won basis with hoops only being counted if matches result in a tie. Summarizing briefly, team members are ranked in order and four singles matches are played (1v1,2v2, 3v3 and 4v4), followed by 4 reverse singles. Then the first and second players pair and play a doubles match while players 3 and 4 play their march. Noosa's Shield team has now played 2 matches, one away against Caloundrs and one at home against Nambour 2. Noosa did well against Caloundra, winning 8 matches to 2, taking 67 hoops against the home side's 48. The individual match results follow with the Noosa players named first. Ed Boyd won (7:2) against Cathy McBrien ; Julie Terry won (5:4) against Anne Moore; Cher Boyd defeated Mike Moore (6:5); Ted Sayers defeated Judith Caughley (7:5). In the reverse singles Ed won against Anne (5:2); Julie Terry won (7:4) over Cathy McBrien; Cher fell to Judith Caughley (5:7) and Ted won (7:3) over Mike. In the doubles Ed and Julie defeated Cathy and Anne (10:6) while Cher and Ted lost to Judith and Mike (10:8). Playing at home to Nambour 2, Noosa had a real battle on its hands with 3 of the first singles going to Nambour while Noosa prevailed in 3 of the 4 second singles. With the singles matches tied at 4 all, the doubles were crucial for both teams, with each winning one match. At 5 matches all, the number of hoops count of (^5:61) gave Noosa the win. Individual match scores follow. Ed Boyd lost (6:7) to Val Smith: Julie Terry lost (5:6) to Derek Smith; Ed won against Derek (4:3); Julie lost to Val (5:7). Sunshine Beach State School students were treated to a special visit last week by paralympian swimmers Daniel Fox and Jacob Templeton. The athletes who are participants in the Queensland Academy of Sport QAS4Schools initiative visited the school to speak about the rewards of physical activity and reaching for a goal. Daniel, an intellectually impaired athlete from Cleveland, won silver in the London 2012 Paralympics, gold in the 2014 Glascow Commonwealth Games in the 200m freestyle, bronze in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and will compete in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Jacob, who is legally blind, competed in five events at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Both swimmers shared their stories about starting out in the sport and the direction it has taken them. They encouraged the students to set goals and emphasised the importance of a healthy diet and physical activity. Teacher Vanessa Flint said the visit had been a thrill for the students. "These young men came with a positive message for our students about applying a growth mindset to all they do and never giving up when working to achieve their goals," she said. ●

SUN SHINES ON NOOSA’S EASTER Early mornings and big high tides have allowed many surface anglers to get into the trevally, tailor and queenies around Woods bays and Munna Bridge last week. Surface lures including popper and surface walkers have got the runs on the board. With the clean water coming in with the high tides plenty of whiting have been on offer around Dog Beach and the frying pan. Live baits like sand worms and yabbies have claimed some good elbow slappers. It's also a great time to chase whiting on surface with the frying pan the perfect spot. There has been good numbers of large flathead being caught in the river at the moment. Fishing curly tailed soft plastics has been very effective. Fish them deep on heavier jig heads during run out tides to get the best results. For the bait anglers prawns and small fish baits have also been deadly on the flatties. Jacks continue to be caught with most anglers doing battle in the evenings. Fishing structure with live baits has been the most productive. On the beaches: There are large numbers of small dart getting caught as well as tailor. Fishing the deeper gutters that have formed after the bigger swells has seen the better results. Baits like mullet, pilchards, and bonito fillets have been perfect. Whiting are in good numbers and fishing the gutter has been paying off. Pippies worms and prawns have all claimed some good fish. During this upcoming new moon period there is

always the chance of catching a big Jewfish on quality flesh baits like fresh tailor or local squid. The most successful Jew anglers are the ones that leave the rod in the rod holder and wait for the fish to run. On the offshore anglers have had a hard time getting outside to chase those pelagics. This is that great time of the year where we see those much larger mackerel, tuna and wahoo all gracing our local reefs. Some of the best results we have seen have come from trolled live and dead baits. Hervey Bay garfish, Sauri's yakka's and pilchards have all got the runs on the board and rigged on a weighted chin guard with a squid skirt teaser has been the most popular method and has been getting the results. Bigger Spanish and tuna love this presentation and fishing the northern end of Sunshine Reef and Jew Sholes should produce some nice fish. If we get some better weather conditions then heading out wide should see some good results with very little fishing pressure. The Barwon banks and the Hards should see snapper, cobia, cod, pearl perch and Jewies. On the Southern reef things will also come alive with Coolum, Gneerings, and Currimundi Reefs al holding good schools of tuna and mackerel. TIGERS READY TO ROLL BY PITTSY The Roccocos Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers head into the Easter break with a fit and healthy list and ready to make their mark on the 2018 Division 1 HART sports cup. The 2017 runners up have recruited extremely well over the off season with 6 or 7 of them on show against Surfers Paradise last weekend and whilst the Gold Coast got away with a 14 point win there was something very different about the way the Noosa boys went about it. The full ground press was actually adopted by both teams and while Surfers held sway for most of the day Noosa's third quarter was particularly impressive. Templeton, Hill and Fitzpatrick (all stars in 2017) were able to get behind the oppositions defensive structure and become very dangeous. The tigers were rusty, especially in the first half with this being their only true pre-season hit out due to recent wet weather cancellations. However I'm sure Sammy Faure will be more than happy taking a fit and raring to noosatoday.com.au
