The now-former Warwick Town Hall toilets stood across the car park from the back entrance to the Free Times office, and it was with a heavy heart that I watched them being razed to the ground on Monday. The muchused public convenience had stood for decades, but it took a demolition crew a morning to render it no more.

Personally, I feel it is another loss to Warwick's heritage, having been designed by renowned Warwick architect Conrad Dornbusch. It could have been made into something of a tourist attraction as has been done with toilets from yesteryear in other places, but even if one does not regard the heritage aspect as important it's still a questionable move by the Southern Downs Regional Council.

Questionable because of the cost of the job - not yet publicly revealed - and from the point of view of how much the facility was used by both locals and visitors. Perhaps the council feared litigation from injuries or incidents at this facility, but I am not aware of any of either in the last decade or more.

The loss of the toilets is testimony both to the litigious nature of modern society and to the short-sightedness and lack of imagination of our council, who should have greater issues to concern themselves with right now.

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie has conceded the council "could have done better" on public consultation over the future management of the Warwick Saleyards.

Speaking at a council 'Q&A' public session at the Warwick Town Hall last week Cr Dobie and council chief executive officer David Keenan fielded questions from the floor about the saleyards and other hot issues including the council's controversial Invasive Pest Control Scheme (IPCS).

When questioned about the short length of time a survey on the Saleyards management options was open to the public late last year - along with secrecy over meetings of the council's Saleyards Advisory Committee - the mayor conceded that in hindsight consultation over a possible move to lease the Saleyards to a private operator could have been handled better.

But she was at pains to stress that primary producers, agents and other parties with an interest in the Warwick Saleyards would be invited to an upcoming public forum, to be held once a 'refined tender' process with the council's preferred tenderer for the Saleyards lease is completed.

She said the process should be finished in another "two or three weeks".

The preferred tenderer is understood to be Regional Livestock Exchanges (RLX) which operates other saleyards in Queensland and New South Wales, including the Central Queensland Livestock Exchange at Gracemere near Rockhampton and saleyards at Tamworth and Inverell.

Yesterday's March council meeting in Stanthorpe received the minutes of a Saleyards Advisory Committee meeting held on Friday 23 February - in a confidential session of the meeting.

Producers in the region are concerned that a private operator leasing the Saleyards could jack up buyer and seller and agents fees, hitting the financial bottom line of livestock owners and driving them to online and paddock sales.

Cr Dobie again made it clear last week that the Warwick Saleyards were not for sale and their continued management by council remained an option.

The mayor was asked if it was true she had made a comment to a member of the public at a recent 'meet the people' event in Rose City Shoppingworld that she personally was in favour of the management

of the Saleyards staying with the council, which is the view held by most local producers.

Cr Dobie replied that she was "only one

councillor" and that her eight councillor colleagues were entitled to their own personal opinion on the issue if it were to come to a vote. ●

The Warwick Town Hall toilets are nothing more than a memory after a demolition crew moved onto the site on Monday morning of this week.

Despite widespread community opposition the toilets were reduced to a pile of rubble within hours, with the Southern Downs Regional Council remaining true to its word that the toilets must go, having deemed them an eyesore, unsafe, not meeting modern disabled access standards and being prone to vandalism.

The toilets will be replaced with three RV parking spaces.

The decision to demolish the toilets came last year after the Queensland Heritage Council refused community requests to include the toilets in the Warwick Town Hall heritage-listing 'footprint'.

Mayor Tracy Dobie said the toilets were "a prime location for crime and vandalism (and) aren't accessible by people with a disability".

"There are several public toilet facilities located within close proximity, including in

Commonwealth Games fever has hit the Southern Downs, with the Cameroon National Basketball team playing two demonstration games in Warwick last weekend and the Queens Baton Relay arriving in town today, Thursday 29 March.

Cameroon - a nation of 23 million in Central Africa - is a major force in international basketball and hit the courts at the Warwick Indoor and Recreation Aquatic Centre (WIRAC) for games against the Brisbane Capitals and the Toowoomba Mountaineers last Saturday and Sunday.

Nearly 70 members of the Cameroon contingent have been in Warwick for the past week and a half in the lead up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games which start next Wednesday 4 April.

The Cameroon team was officially welcomed at a civic reception held at the Warwick Show last Friday night, 23 March.

Hundreds of the region's school students were due to take part in Queen's Baton Relay community celebrations at Warwick's Leslie Park this morning ahead of the Baton's arrival at 9.15am.

Mayor Tracy Dobie said the Queen's Baton Relay and the Cameroon visit were exciting events for region.

"This is an exciting time for our region

The baton relay trial run last December. and an opportunity to make our own piece of Commonwealth Games history," she said.

"Warwick is the only regional town in Australia to be hosting a pre-Games training camp for a full Commonwealth Games team."

Local Queen's Baton Relay batonbearers include Rex Baguley, Linda Bunch, Linda Coombes, John Davis, Xsanthia-Rose Frith, Aaron Payne, William Reardon, John Telfer, Michael Hayes, Steve McEvoy and Angelina Sims.

ew Warwick Coles supermarket manager Michael Vipiana has swapped the balmy climes of North Queensland for his new gig in the more temperate seasons of the Rose City and he couldn't be happier.

With our new Coles to officially open next Saturday 7 April Michael and his team of 75 staff are busy behind the scenes training up and prepping the store to welcome its first customers.

The long-anticipated opening of the new

supermarket will coincide with the official opening of the Rose City Shoppingworld extensions and local shoppers are itching to check it all out.

The Free Times had an exclusive sneak peek inside the new Coles this week and the shelves are rapidly filling in the state-of-theart retail space - complete with an in-store bakery and butchery.

Other notable features of the 3500 square metre supermarket are a continental deli and a health food section - with a 'scoop and weigh' option - plus 11 'main' checkout lanes, 10 self-assisted checkouts and two

express lanes.

On top of that there's easy access both inside the store through the checkouts and wide aisles, and from the new underground Rose City Shoppingworld car park via the new travelator next to Coles.

Shoppers entering the new Coles - either from inside the main part of the centre or from the new mall leading in from Fitzroy Street - will find themselves surrounded by the fresh produce section located next to the bakery and butchery.

Michael Vipiana said four local suppliers are on board in the fresh produce and meat

sections, enabling shoppers to pick up and enjoy some of our finest regional produce.

Deliveries to the new Coles from its Brisbane distribution centre will be via two B-doubles per day - one in the morning with fresh produce and the other in the afternoon with general groceries.

For Michael, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity - along with completing staff recruitment and progressing the store's fit-out he's also settled into the Warwick area with wife Kaitlyn and their young family made up of two boys aged six and one, and a daughter aged 3.

The family have found an ideal home out of town on acreage, but for Michael - born and raised in Tully in NQ - it's not his first stint in the Rose City.

AgForce General President Grant Maudsley said a groundswell of anger was building over the proposed changes, with the community protests coinciding with five parliamentary committee hearings in regional Queensland this week.

"These laws are the worst of both worlds. The Palaszczuk Government will make it harder for farmers to grow food and they won't deliver the best environmental outcomes either," he said.

"At a time when global demand for our great food and fibre is at all-time high, these laws will shut down new agricultural development opportunities in Queensland.

"Farmers just want fair and workable laws to grow more food, create jobs and look after their environment without being strangled in red tape. It's pretty simple - if farmers can't feed their own families, they can't feed yours."

The week of direct action included rallies and protests in Queensland towns where the government's State Development, Natural Resources and Agricultural Industry Development Committee held public sittings this week, including Rockhampton, Townsville, Cloncurry, Longreach and Charleville.

The parliamentary committee is due to table its report on Monday 23 April 2018.

Tickets are still on sale for a Testimonial Dinner in Warwick to celebrate nearly three decades of service to the region by former State Member of Parliament Lawrence Springborg.

The dinner will be held on Saturday 28 April at the Hawker Road Function Centre at the Warwick Golf Club, with a 6pm for 6.30pm start.

Mr Springborg stepped down as Member for Southern Downs ahead of the last Queensland election in November last year, and was succeeded by James Lister of the LNP.

The Southern Downs Regional Council has failed to respond to questions over allegations it has directed its employees not to sign a petition calling for the deamalgamation of the former Stanthorpe Shire from Southern Downs.

The petition was lodged by Granite Belt community members with the Queensland Parliament in late February and has so far garnered more than 1400 online signatures.

The Free Times was told this week the council's chief executive officer David Keenan had issued a directive that staff not sign the petition but an enquiry sent to the council via email from the Free Times asking for clarification had not been responded to by time of printing this week.

Initial advice provided to the petition organisers by the Clerk of the Queensland Parliament is that such a directive could be found to be 'contempt of Parliament' but would "ultimately" be a question for the Members of Parliament themselves to determine and there is no clear precedent in Queensland at this time.

The council recently directed its employees to sign new confidentiality agreements relating to discussion of council business with persons outside the organisation and staff use of social media. ●

The long-awaited announcement of this year's Tree Jumper exhibition theme has finally been made as Warwick Art Gallery opens the registration process for the 2018 Jumpers and Jazz in July exhibition.

In its fifteenth year the Jumpers and Jazz in July festival has witnessed the decoration of Warwick's deciduous trees develop into a remarkable exhibition that attracts tens of thousands of visitors to town every year.

Warwick Art Gallery Director Karina Devine said her team has been working hard behind the scenes to make sure everything is ready for the busy months ahead.

"The Tree Jumper exhibition keeps us occupied most of the year but this initial registration process is the most timeconsuming," said Karina.

"Everyone is so keen and enthusiastic to find out the theme and get to work on their creations. The trees haven't even started losing their leaves yet!"

"The first part of the process is to determine what trees will be included and that actually takes quite a while as we have to look at them from so many angles including safety and access and whether the trees have disease or thorns."

"This year's theme is 'DULCET' which will certainly challenge our artists. It is a word often used in association with jazz music so it is going have a great synergy with the rest of the festival!"

Winning entrants in the Prime Cattle and Prime Sheep and Lamb competitions were bought by local butchers keen to bring the best cuts to their customers.

These included Peter Wright and Paul Carey of Rose City Premium Meats, who purchased the Champion Pen of Three Vealers - which included the Reserve Champion Prime Vealer – along with the Reserve Champion Pen of Three Lambs at the sales following the prize presentations at the Show last Friday.

DAY OF FIRSTS ON GARDEN EXPO JAUNT Recently a coach trip to the Queensland Garden Expo and Plant Show was enjoyed by happy group.

This Expo, held at Doomben racecourse, was spectacular and will be on the list of events to be attended next year. The numerous expert speakers from 3 different stages were entertaining and informative and seating was plentiful at these venues so they could be enjoyed in comfort.

It was a day of firsts for me starting with our stop at a park in Ipswich for morning tea.

There was a lovely tree flowering and no one seemed able to come up with a name.

After some research on the web, I was told it is a yellow poinciana.

Not being a native of Queensland or even north coast N.S.W. it was not familiar to me.

The red form has always been a favourite of mine and I have loved seeing them over the years when I have visited the more tropical areas of our country. Beautiful spreading trees, with a canopy of spectacular red flowers in season, they provide wonderful shade to many streets and large house yards.

They are without leaves for only a very short time as they shed the old ones and new ones appear in early spring, so are really an excellent choice in tropical areas for streets, parks and large house yards. They are a tree that requires plenty of room to spread, and certainly not to be grown near swimming pools as when they shed their feathery leaves you can be sure every one will end up 10 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

They are not for our area unless in a very protected spot and with much care and perseverance until well established, as they are frost tender, but are certainly very beautiful. The yellow form in full flower would be equally as spectacular as the red and I will endeavour to return to the Ipswich park to see it in full flower.

wonderful shade trees and buildings to house the many exhibitors. The variety of stalls was huge and the number of plants that were brought home testified to this. I have never seen such a range of bromeliads before in one place and one lucky traveller took one home as a prize in our raffle.

Another wonderful plant I found for a friend who was unable to attend, was a white bat flower.

These unusual plants are a member of the yam family and would make an unusual

addition to your range of indoor or shade house plants. Another expert tells me that it should be treated as an orchid with regard to watering, position and potting.

The advice here was that they are quite easily grown with some knowledge and repay the effort with their spectacular flowers and large glossy green leaves.

Their common name is derived from the unusual flowers that really resemble a flying bat with its black face and white "ears". The black form is even more eerily "bat" like.

This is a big year for the Warwick Horticultural Society as on April 3rd it will be 110 years since it was formed and there are a range of events planned for throughout the year. We are one of, if not the oldest society in Queensland and, with the possible exception of some of the war years, have been meeting continuously for all that time.

The next event is the annual free information evening to be held in the CWA rooms on the evening of Wednesday May 30th. The speaker this year will be well known horticulturist, Brian Sams. He is a very down to earth and entertaining speaker and a fund of knowledge on all aspects of gardening. We are very fortunate to have an expert of this calibre in our area and speaking at a FREE information evening.

Supper will be served and there will be time for questions. Put the date in your diary and plan to attend what will be a really enjoyable evening. All are welcome. ● freetimes.com.au

THE SPIN

CHEATING - NOT THE AUSSIE WAY Like everyone in Australia I woke on Sunday morning to the astonishing and unbelievable news of the furore that unfolded during the Test in Cape Town. I watched in utter disbelief the footage of Cameron Bancroft's dismal attempts to firstly tamper with the ball, then try and cover it up by shoving the offending object down his pants and then trying to con the umpire.

If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable. My advice to Bancroft - if the ACA tear up your contract you are certainly not cut out for a life of deception.

It is of course no laughing matter. I feel however we should all take a deep breath and wait for the outcome of the Cricket Australia investigation. What we have seen and heard to date however is damming enough to make all Australians cringe.

Cheating is not the Australian way. It is not what we want to see from the members of our cricket team who were up until Sunday morning afforded such respect in this country.

While many have likened this to the dark days of the infamous underarm incident in New Zealand, it is in reality very different. When Greg Chappell coerced his brother into bowling underarm he did it within the laws of the game - definitely not the spirit of the game but the option was in the laws of the game and no-one knows really why.

The plan hatched by the Australians on day three at Newlands was a not too smart plot to plainly cheat and unfortunately for Steve Smith one of the most talented batsmen in our history the price he pays will be a high one.

This is not the first and nor is it likely to be the last time some is charged with ball tampering - There is a long list of culprits. 12 months ago it was South African Faf De Plesis who was found guilty. Unfortunately for the Australians, the holier than thou attitude that was taken then has come back to bite them on the backside. Many around the world are whispering none too softly that it is karma.

Although we as Australians put our elite cricketers on a pedestal and the cricket captain alongside our Prime Minister many in the cricket world have a different view seeing the side as thuggish and bullies.

While the Newlands incident has stunned us, many players are now saying ball tampering in some form has been an open secret in all cricket ranks for years.

While I agree that many players (Australian and others) push the envelope in this area, this is different.

The whole sordid business shows a lack of respect for the ethos of the game; a lack of respect for the baggy green; a lack of respect for officials and Umpires and clearly a lack of respect for the fans and those Australian who might not be cricket fans, but still look up to our national side.

Cricket I believe has been cruising for a bruising for some time a parade of officials at all levels have allowed the integrity of the game to be eroded in recent years. Players appear to care more for their bank accounts than the traditions of the game. We all acknowledge sport is big business but when players reach the pinnacle of the game too many lose sight of the bigger picture and the consequences 18 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

RSL made it back to back premierships with a decisive win in the Stanthorpe Cricket Association grand final last weekend at the CF White Oval. RSL have now won four of the past six grand finals. their actions have on the whole of the game.

The crisis facing cricket now will reverberate in dressing rooms and cricket board rooms around the world but I am left to wonder if it would have happened had there been strong leadership at the top.

Cast your mind back to previous coaches and captains. You have to find it hard to believe this could or would have even been contemplated under the likes of John Buchannan, Steve Waugh and the toughest of tough Alan Border.

The standards by which the game is played have been allowed to diminish to this point where we have a win at all costs mentality and cost it will.

Smith must have known as he fronted the cameras and accepted responsibility that the price he would pay for his or someone else's stupidity would be his captaincy.

Where the coach sits in all of this is yet to be revealed with many observers believing his position is untenable.

Much more will be revealed as Cricket Australia delves into the matter.

While Steve Smith no doubt deserves punishment let's hope that the ACA also provide he and others with sufficient support to deal personally with the consequences off their actions.

Let's not throw them under the bus and leave them to flounder because that also is not the Australian way. Chris Lynne put it into perspective earlier this week. While not condoning the episode he said, "They have not committed a murder".

This horse has bolted but I believe that cricket officialdom must show some kahunas and drag the game kicking and screaming back towards the game it once was and the values it was built on.

DOMINANT GRAND FINAL FOR RSL The local cricket season wrapped up on Saturday with the Stanthorpe Grand final.

While there may have been some confusion around the Minor Premiership RSL made very post a winner on Saturday and left no doubt as to who was the winner of the grand final.

South's had first use of the CF White turf. Disaster struck early when South's opener Carriage was run out in the opening over with just one run on the board. That dismissal brought the inform Jordan Lanza to the wicket. He opened his innings with some lusty hits finding the boundary on a couple of occasions before misjudging a ball from Luke Brady and was caught by Duane Lihou for 15. With the score at 2/38 and Lanza back in the clubhouse RSL had the early upper hand.

Ben Staley came to the wicket and attempted to steady the ship but wickets tumbled around him as the RSL bowlers continued to dominate the bat. They were well supported by some sharp fielding as catches stuck and run outs hit the mark.

Staley (22) was caught by Duane Lihou off the bowling of Sam Dowie in the 33rd over with the score at 7/95.

There was a little fight in the South's tail.

Liam Lanza added a handy 12 runs to the total before he was run out and Cameron added a much needed 18 before he was dismissed.

RSL bowlers Sam Dowie and Luke Brady were particularly punishing with the ball.

Dowie finished with 3/15 from his eight over spell and Luke Brady 2/23 from eight.

South's batted out their 40 overs but from the clubhouse 127 did not look to be enough runs to trouble the RSL batsmen The RSL opening partnership of Jason Lawer and Luke Brady looked solid from the outset but with the score at 1/42 Brady fell LBW to Cameron. The fall of the first wicket brought Sam Dowie (35) to the wicket and he and Lawer (65) chased down the remaining runs with nine overs to spare in a decisive victory.

Jason Lawer was a deserved winner of the Player of the Final for his unbeaten 63 with the bat. He also claimed a couple of wickets and took a catch to dismiss Tim Bonner.

The win gives RSL back to back premierships. They have now won four of the last six grand finals.

HAVE THERE BEEN ONLY THREE ROUNDS Have we only had three round of NRL - it seems so much longer. More than a couple of NRL coaches will be in need of medication if their teams continue playing the way they did last round. For coaches and

spectators if this is how the season is going to play out investing a defibrillator might be necessary.

If you look at the good the bad and the ugly and very ugly of round three - the good must be the performance of the Roosters who hit their straps against the Knights and turned on an exhibition of the quality football everyone is expecting from them this season.

The Doggies finally put it together to hang on for a narrow win over the fast finishing Panthers. It seems they like to play until their trailing 14 nil and come home with a Winx like display. Unfortunately they left their run a bit late and Doggies fans were able to celebrate.

The Dragons continue their impressive start to the season. Things are only going to get better for them as Hunt and co have more game time together.

If you are looking for the ugly then the Broncos win over the resurgent Tigers has to take the prize. Brisbane got the two points but their coach will be in need of serious medication if they continue to put him through that every week. Have they no respect for his age?

Oates and Pangai Jnr succumbed to injury during the game and will be key outs in the next couple of games.

On the good side if you are a Broncos' fan they got the two points and proved they don't have to always look pretty.

Paul Green could see nothing pretty and very little good in his side's performance against the Storm at AAMI. The loss was a reality check for the Cowboys and Green did not miss his players saying they need to stop reading and believing the headlines. Michael Morgan returned to the starting line-up and will be better for the run.

Bellamy too was not overawed by Melbourne's win and it is obvious there are some kinks that need to be ironed out since the departure of Cooper Cronk.

The Titans were "thee bad" disappointing in their game against the Dragons. It was certainly an ugly loss but you can only be as good as your opponents allow and they were handed a master class.

Sea Eagles fans should be sending their team to the naughty corner after their woeful exhibition against the Bunnies.

Bad, bad, horrible. After their big win over the Eels the previous week some players obviously did not think they were required to turn up and play and the Bunnies pulled their pants down. Good to see the Bunnies on the board for their first win in 2018.

The Warriors completed their best start to an NRL season since we can't remember when with a nail biting win over the Raiders. Coach Ricky Stuart is another who will need medical intervention if his side continues their weekend form. The Raiders led by seven points with three minutes to go but managed somehow to get beaten.

Of course in the good bad and ugly bin are a host of refereeing decisions that have come under scrutiny. Enforcing the play the ball rule and the deliberate off side ruling are just two of the contentious issues at the moment. While no one likes stop start games there are plenty of supporters who are pleased to see the refs enforcing some of the basic rules of the game. When penalties and sin binning starts to impact on results I am sure coaches will be keen to alter their, and players mind sets re the rules.

Meanwhile round four looms over the Easter weekend and winners will look much harder to find than chocolate eggs in the family Easter Egg Hunt. freetimes.com.au

BOEKHOLT'S BIG DAY OUT Darryl Boekholt had a great day out on Saturday. He made it a clean sweep in Saturday's competition at the Stanthorpe Golf Club winning the Pike Trophy, the Nuffield Cup and the best nett score of 68 for the round.

He secured the Pike Trophy after he had the best nett score over the best two of three rounds after all calculations had been done.

Boekholt win in the day's stroke event, for the Nuffield Cup, was a closer contest after he and Mark Hendry returned nett 68.

Hendry settled for runner up spot after the count back.

Pin shots went to Mick O'Brien at 3, John Spiller at 12 and Keith Allen at 17.

Max Hunter collected the balls for the pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14 with Mark Hendry holding 9/18. Mick O'Brien won the birdies 'nest at three.

The ladies' Pike Trophy was won by Kay Webb who needed only two of the three rounds to secure the win, but an excellent 94 in the final round saw the Trophy going her way. She also took the honours for the day's competition with Neta Thouard claiming runner up prize after a count back with Madeline Jarman.

Club member, Mark McCosker, was our sponsor for the day. He spoke on the history of the Nuffield Cup and how it related to both his family and the golf club. Not all members are not aware of the back ground of some of the club's long standing trophies and the history Mark shared was very interesting.

Racheal Hendry held the ladies pin at 3 and Kay Webb had best approach at 17.

In the run down, a ball to nett 72 and better for the men and nett 80 for the ladies.

Golfers are always targeting the pin as their aiming point. It's been reported Santo Cavallaro did just that when putting on the 16 green from some 30 metres away.

He managed to get the ball to roll within a metre for his last putt. Unfortunately he didn't know the pin already had been removed from the hole, and though within a metre of the pin, he still had another 20 metres to the hole. AAGH that's golf.

Apparently an honest but unfortunate error but some players did see the funny side of the situation.

Saturday is the last competition for the month of March so a medley 4BBB Stableford with a shot gun start at 11.45 am has been scheduled. Registration is required no later than 20 minutes prior to allow the starter to arrange tee positions. Sponsor for the day is club member, Ian Harvey and there is a Time sheet is on the board at the clubhouse.

LOCAL ORIENTEERS HEAD TO TASMANIA Six members of the Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Orienteering Club are heading to Tasmania over Easter break to compete in seven days of orienteering competition.

The competition gets underway with a sprint event on Good Friday at the

University of Tasmania in Hobart, followed by three days of bush orienteering north and east of the capital.

Warwick's elite junior, Simeon Burrill will again be vying for selection in the Australian team for the Junior World Championships to be held in Hungary in July.

Burrill is currently a member of the national Junior Development Squad and has been an Australian representative in 2015, 2016 and 2017. This will be his last chance at junior selection before moving in to the senior ranks next year.

It will be another Burrill family affair with Simeon's parents, Marion and Phil, also competing, along with Doug and Anne Wilson of Warwick, and Liz Bourne of Stanthorpe.

Following the four day Easter competition, the Orienteers will head up the Tasmanian east coast to participate in the three day Bay of Fires competition which will be centred around St Helen's.

The competition includes two days in complex, eroded former tin mining terrain plus a day in forested granite conditions which are sure to make the local BBB contingent feel right at home.

ACTION ON THE TANNY GREENS The Tanny Triples were played recently and a big group turned out to enjoy the weather, the good greens and the great tucker and there was also some great bowls played.

The winning trio was Tom Senager, Max Holder and John Simpson. Filling the runners up spot was the team of Philpsy, Marg Wright and Pete Collins.

The fifth round of the Tanny Classic was decided with a big roll up for the game under lights. Winners were Ryan Boal, Waynno (who no thinks he is No.1), Petersen and Walshy who all picked up a handy five points. , Mogo and Myrtle - they all get four points for their efforts. Results are not yet in for the final of the first Tanny Classic for 2018 but after Round five Kenny Armstrong headed the leader board with 16 points. Marg T was not far afield with 14, Walshy 13 and Myrtle 12. Heading into the last round it looked like any of a number of players were well positioned to take out the cash prize - Interesting to hear how it bowled out.

The first round of the Men's A Grade Singles has also been decided. Aaron 27 defeated Shep 12. Don Clouten 25 defeated Dan Sullivan 25-14. Gordie Assay defeated Gazza Farmer 25-15. Thommo had a 26-14 win over Nick Farmer. Three additional games will be decided mid-week and we look forward to those results.

HAWKS TOO STRONG FOR GREMLINS The Stanthorpe Gremlins had their first hit out in the TRL Clive Berghofer C Grade competition last weekend taking on the Gatton Hawks at Sullivan Oval.

The game attracted a good crowd through the gate and officials were pleased with the turnout of players. The Hawks

figured in last season's grand final against Dalby C Grade and are expected to be one of the benchmark sides in the competition again this season.

The Gremlins played well in the first half defending well and turning away the Hawks to take a two point lead to the half time break.

In the second half the heat and lack of fitness showed and the Gremlins saw the experienced Hawks swoop on opportunities as they finished over the top of the home side. The final score 28-10.

It was a good effort from the Gremlins and they will be much improved for their next game. There are no TRL games over the Easter period and the Gremlins will take on Brother in their next game on April 7 at Sullivan Oval.

STEELING WINS AND BAGGING THE CHOCOLATES There were no Leprechauns left out on the course when a big roll up of Sporters took to the fairways and greens on Sunday morning after St Paddy's Day. Norm Steele was in winning form and claimed the winner's prize. Runner up was Jamie Mitchell while Mark Lynam returned the Best Gross. The run-downs went to Aaron Simmers and Owen McPaul. . Angelo Maugeri was all over the Pin Shot on the third and Casey Leotta nailed the Pro Pin. Phil Zikan and Matt Waterworth did not go home empty handed each winning a meat tray.

Last Sunday it was Paul Brynes took the chocolates ahead of runner up Phil Zikan.

Matt Waterworth returned the Best Gross in the run downs along with Tony Steele. Paul Armstrong held the Pin Shot at the 12th and the Pro Pin and figured run-downs went to Paul Armstrong and Tony Steele. . The Pin Shot on the 12th and also the Pro Pin went to Paul Armstrong. There were No Takers for the Pin on the 17th. Dick Hilton and Matt Waterworth hopped away with a Meat Tray each in preparation for the Easter break.

The Maureen Bates Memorial Day is set down for April 8 and is shaping up as another great day so get your playing crew together if the date is not already in your golfing diary.

The Sporters' crew wish everyone a happy and safe Easter break WATTLES HOME IN A TOUGH WIN The Gatton Hawks had their first hit out in season 2018 after having the bye in round one. Playing Wattless on their home turf is never an easy ask and this game was no different. Despite drawing first blood the Hawks went down 26-20 in a really tough game where the big forward packs on both sides did not give an inch.

The Warriors returned to the sheds at half time with a 12-6 lead after Gatton failed

to find touch with a kick just before the break and Hargraves was on the ball to take full advantage of the error.

Wattles then scored after the break with the experienced Ryan Duggan and Travis Burns combining to add to the scoreboard.

With 15 minutes left on the clock Wattles led 26-5 and an easy win looked likely. The home side were given a wakeup call when Gatton came with a late run scoring three tries to narrow the margin to a converted try. Wattles held on in a quality game to nail a 26-20 win.

After winning their opening game of the season the Cowboys received a reality check at the hands of the 2017 premiers.

At half time Dalby led 14 nil. Both sides were missing some key players but the Diehards went on with the job in the second half allowing the Cowboys across their line on only one occasion as their forward pack dominated.

The Cowboys missed the services of Joe Fuimaono and Dan Murphy but their poor ball control let them down in key stages of the game.

The Diehards made it a clean sweep winning all four grades. They look to have plenty of depth as well as talent and will be tough to toss in 2018.

A fine day again last Sunday with Dave and Kevin taking advantage of the conditions to win their classes. Next Sunday 1st April we will be at the 300 yard mound for our combined F class and military rifle shoot. Contact Margaret on 4666 1018 for further information.

Today is our monthly Red Rooster mixed triples day, with play starting at 12.00 noon. Please phone the club on 4661 9050 between 10.00 and 11.30 a.m. if you would like a game. Next Thursday will be our monthly mixed triples day. Starting time and arrangements for notifying the club are as above.

On Saturday mixed social bowls will resume. Play starts at 1.00 p.m., with names to be in between 12.00 and 12.30. There will be the usual prizes on offer, as well as a chance to win the jackpot which has reached a substantial amount. If you haven't anything to do over the long weekend, why not come down for an afternoon of friendly competition and camaraderie?
