40 years stolen Joao Garcia has finally found his mum - 40 years after being allegedly kidnapped as a young boy in East Timor during the Indonesian invasion in 1975. Much like the award-winning film Lion. the Narre Warren printer has lived most of his life questing for answers about his past.

Through that time, he's lived in Portugal and Australia without knowing his mother's true name. He had none of his birth records, which were apparently destroyed during the invasion. His alleged kidnapper registered him under a new name and told him his mother abandoned him.

He carried the painful likelihood that he'd never find his mother again. In February, out of the blue, Joao's brotherin-law gets a call from a Timorese friend in Noble Park. Apparently the friend was neighbours with a woman asking around for her long-lost son Isaac. For some reason, it clicked that Joao was indeed Isaac. "Your mum has been after you for so many

years," the neighbour told Joao. Ironically, Joao had lived in the neighbour's home in Eumemmerring soon after arriving in Australia 20 years ago. He and his 70-year-old mother Isabel Soares re-connected on social media. They exchanged stories from 40 years apart via video calls with a go-between translator. Continued on Page 24

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk As Easter looms, it’s easy for the wrong message to spread. Exactly where the eggs fit in with the rabbits remains somewhat unclear. The hot cross buns hit the supermarket shelves earlier and earlier each year, and it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters. So perhaps the answer is to treat Easter as a sort of mini-Christmas - which seems appropriate for our second-biggest annual religious festival. Leaving the thornier questions of religious specificity aside, maybe there’s one aspect on which we can all agree. Maybe Easter - coming as it does hard on the heels of the busy start to the year, and many Melbourne major events - is just the refreshing tonic we all need. As He rose, perhaps this is the time we can all take a little mental helath check, and smell the roses. Maybe less of the frantic road trip, and more of the quiet contemplation and relaxing at home. Maybe put aside that long list of jobs - and the urge every Australian male gets to build a gazebo, when confronted with a four-day break. So maybe the eaves don’t get painted this year. Maybe, instead, you spend time with the family, or reading, or DVD bingeing, or just plain old relaxing. After all, there’s no need for vengeance and hard hearts - the nation has already crucified a couple of cricketers to commemorate the season. But if you do feel especially religious, maybe spare a prayer for the Australian Cricket Team - I have the sense they’re going to need it. - Jason Beck

Pensioner jailed for crops By Cam Lucadou-Wells A grandfather who set up two cannabis crops for personal use and to pay off mountainous debts has been jailed. Rezdep Muaremov, 61, pleaded guilty at the Victorian County Court to growing a commercial quantity of plants in two home hydroponic set-ups in Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills as well as stealing more than $20,000 of electricity using a bypass system. During a police raid of the Cranbourne property on 19 January 2017, the pensioner admitted to officers about the crop inside. But he failed to reveal the three long-arm weapons he illegally stored in a roof cavity and behind the fridge, Judge Jeanette Morrish said during sentencing on 23 March. In what Judge Morrish called a "fanciful story", Muaremov later told police he found

the three guns as well as 0.22-calibre cartridge ammunition during a walk in the park. He kept the guns to go rabbit hunting that coming weekend, he told police. Muaremov initially told police he had no link to the Endeavour Hills house, where police found his wife, daughter-in-law, two grandchildren and a 77-plant cannabis crop. He initially denied he was even married or had a family. At the time, Muaremov was saddled with a $158,309 Centrelink debt and $720,000 mortgages on the two houses. His two crops weighed a total of 26.5 kilograms - which he initially claimed were for personal use. The $1295 cash in his pocket was given to him by his son from the proceeds of dog sales, he claimed.

He'd set up the operation eight months ago using instructions from a You Tube video, he told police - who seized two folders of information on how to set up the crops. His lawyer later told the court Muaremov was hoping to yield a profit of up to $15,000 but had yet to gain any reward from the crops. As the sole operator, he stood to make "significant reward" from the endeavour, Judge Morrish said. The former cleaning-business owner arrived from the former Yugoslavia in 1985. He recently stopped working due to serious back and ankle injuries. As a result, he developed chronic pain, depression and an anxiety disorder. He self-medicated with cannabis, he claimed. Judge Morrish noted Muaremov had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty at an

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A whippet-smart greyhound has helped save the life of a man who collapsed unconscious in his Berwick home. Without warning, Ron Hitchen, 76, fell and stopped breathing in his hallway as he was getting ready for bed on 26 March. His co-tenant Pam Higgins was stirred from bed by her pet greyhound Leena whining at the bedroom door. "She started making this weird sound. I thought she was in trouble, so I called her but she wouldn't come to me. "I got up and had a look, and I found Ron unconscious." Ms Higgins, 70, dialled a triple-0 operator who talked her through as she delivered lifesaving CPR to Mr Hitchen. "It was the dog that saved his life. "Thank God he wasn't living by himself. No one would have found you." Mr Hitchen, who was recovering at Dandenong Hospital, said Leena was the loyalest of companions. "I think it was bloody wonderful. "She did something you wouldn't expect from a dog. "Her loyalty - there's nothing that you can think of that's any better." Leena - so named because of her narrow girth - had become a "hero amongst the greyhound world". "If it had have been Lassie (the famous Hollywood canine), millions would then believe it." Leena and fellow pet greyhound Princess Marilyn had already been celebrities, levering smiles and pats during their visits to aged care homes. Grateful for his second chance, Mr Hitchen said Leena was set to be rewarded with several meals of roast chicken on his return home. "I can't wait until Christmas - she'll be getting turkey drumsticks."

Eight cases of the deadly disease meningococcal have been recorded in Casey in 2017. A vaccine program for teenagers has been extended by the State Government in response to a statewide outbreak. In the past three years, there have been 223 cases in Victoria including 17 in Casey, four in Cardinia and two in Greater Dandenong. In 2017, six Victorians died from the infectious disease that inflames the brain membrane and infects blood, organs and joints. The free vaccine program targets Year 10 students - whose age bracket is considered as greater risk of carrying and spreading the bacteria. It's thought that one in five carry it in the back of their throats and can pass it on to family and friends. The disease passes from prolonged physical contact such as kissing. One in 10 cases of meningococcal prove fatal, with death striking within one or two days. Two in 10 survive with a permanent disability such as brain damage or loss of limbs, fingers or toes. Health Minister Martin Foley said the program provided young people "easy access to a life-saving vaccine". "Our government is determined to protect our communities from this deadly disease by launching this meningococcal program for another year." Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Brett Sutton said the vaccine protected against four strains of the disease. "Ensuring eligible young people are vaccinated is essential in protecting the wider community from this deadly disease." The vaccination program at schools, councils and GPs continues until the end of 2018.

High rents hit homeless A massive boost to public and social housing is needed for hundreds of people without a home in Casey, says a support-service director. Leanne Petrides, who runs Cranbourne Community Information and Support Service, said the 1280 homeless people recorded during the 2016 Census was almost certainly an under-estimation. "While there was quite assertive outreach at census time, I can guarantee that there would be many people who were homeless on the night but were not counted despite best efforts. "The homelessness issue is a real problem, and certainly growing in our community." Ms Petrides said private rent was too expensive for people on low or fixed incomes. "There are a number of potential options that might mitigate the problem, but really we need a massive investment into both public and social housing. "Many people are forced into living in rooming houses which still eat up most of their income, and are often over-crowded and potentially dangerous." Ms Petrides welcomed City of Casey's proactiveness, including the establishment of a Casey-Cardinia homelessness leadership group in February. The group includes service providers, charities, housing agencies, Victoria Police, Monash Health, Eastern Region Mental Health Association and the Department of Health and Human Services. Casey's connected communities manager Jo Smale said a collaborative strategic approach was important in response to the

"emerging housing crisis". "Greater collaboration between the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire and housing agencies was highlighted as an important step." Since hosting a housing summit in October, Casey Council is applying for a grant for a social and affordable housing strategy and has developed a rooming-house planning policy. It is also investigating how to provide for affordable housing in the planning scheme. The State Government and Opposition did not respond to Star News by deadline.

Casey mayor Geoff Ablett says there's "no war" between councillors and the council's administration despite losing two chief executives within a month. After 23 years as Casey's founding CEO, Mike Tyler suddenly resigned in what was described as a "mutual decision" as of 23 February. Since then, Sheena Frost has come and gone as acting chief executive, replaced by director Steve Dalton on 21 March. Ms Frost continues in her role as Casey's corporate services strategic director. "Everyone's happy," Cr Ablett said. "There was no conflict between Sheena and I. Sheena's great to have in the organisation, just a great person. "Steve's happy to be in the job. "There's no war on. There's no culture problem." The council has not formally commented on the reasons for Mr Tyler and Ms Frost's departures. Cr Ablett denied that councillors being barred access from parts of the new council offices at Bunjil Place had been a major factor. "Under the new CEO, there will be more access. "There's certain parts in which our people are working. That's fair enough - we don't want to interfere in their work spaces and the roles that they have. "Access is not the major issue." Cr Ablett said the council had conversations on how it could work better together as a team. "As with any organisation, when someone goes, there's an opportunity ... people have come up with items on how we can improve. "It's part and parcel of a good organisation."

A South-Eastern suburbs couple have happily celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Ken and Jean Perry, of Cranbourne, married on the 29 March, 1958 at the church of St Martin's in Bilbrough in the UK after a five and half year courtship. They spent their honeymoon at the Channel Isles - a group of islands in the English Channel, off the coast of France. The couple celebrated their anniversary at the Blue Hills Village in Cranbourne. "We had a lovely day there with 70 guests," says Jean. "My son brought my friend over of 57 years from Nottingham." Ken, 82 and Jean, 80, received letters from the Queen, the Governor-General, the Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne and the Prime Minister to mark their milestone anniversary.

They have two twin sons who live in Cranbourne and Seaton, as well as eight grandchildren and eight great children. In 1992, the couple moved to Australia. "I worked for two nurse agencies and then I got regular work with the Frankston council at a hostel as a carer," Jean says. The couple met in England as neighbours where Ken was one of 10 children. From there, they "just got talking." "We went to the pictures and that's how it carried on," Jean says, adding their first movie together at the cinemas was 'Gone from the wind'. When asked the key to a long-lasting marriage, the couple say "Work together and share, no secrets, and always talk."

‘Kill threat’ appeal By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man is appealing against his jail term for a series of attacks and deadly threats on his expartner, including holding her at knifepoint at her home in a Hampton Park boarding house. The 25-year-old, with 18 prior convictions for assault, called out to his mother in the court gallery "See you in two years" after he was jailed for up to 26 months at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 26 March. "I need you to put a message on Facebook. "Love you, Mum." In defiance of an intervention order, the man attacked the 23-year-old female victim twice at the Oaktree Drive boarding house on 28 February and 2 March. At the time he was on a Victorian County Court community corrections order. On the first occasion, he punched her in the face during an argument. Late on 1 March, he stalked outside all of the rooms screaming that he would kill her, her son and mother. The next morning, he returned in what was described as a "psychotic" enraged state. He held a kitchen knife to his ex-partner's throat, telling her he'd kill her. He assaulted others that tried to intervene, and held a knife to another female resident's throat. The ex-partner was cornered by the man in her kitchen. She threw a coffee cup at him, and fled. He caught up to her on Pound Road. She was punched, fell and curled up in a ball to protect herself. He punched her with both fists to the back of the head several times. He left the scene before police arrived. Over following days, the man repeatedly phoned and texted the ex-partner to drop

the charges or he and his "mates" would harm her, her mother and her family. He threatened to tie her up to a stolen car and burn her alive, to put her in a "f***ing drum" and to burn down her mother's house. On 19 March, he surrendered himself to a police station where he was arrested and charged. The man also pleaded guilty to possessing nunchucks, found while he was a drugaffected state in a Capel Sound residence in November. He had complex mental health issues, including ADHD, autism and paranoia as well as low intellect and a potential acquired brain injury, his lawyer told the court. This was compounded by drug use, the court heard. He had been released from a 48-day stint in jail in early February. Three days later, he was found naked and in a psychotic state on the side of a highway. He was admitted to a hospital psychiatric ward for two nights, the court was told. The lawyer requested the man was shortlisted for the "limited" number of mentalhealth beds at Ravenhall and Thomas Embling correction facilities. "He needs some sentencing options that can help him rehabilitate." From the dock, the man pleaded for the court to give him a "chance".

"I want to improve my life, get away from my criminal past. "I got caught up with this girl. When I left jail, she wouldn't leave me alone. She caused a lot of dramas for me. "She brought a bloke around to attack me." Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man had 25 prior convictions for assault and violence-related offences as well as multiple breaches of intervention orders since 2006. He was "guarded" about the man's rehabilitation prospects; the current CCO "didn't work". "I get it that imprisonment is more difficult for him. "That doesn't address the issue of the protection of the community." Mr Vandersteen rebutted the defence submission that the ex-partner had a significant ice addiction and had also sent texts to the man. "So she deserves this? "There's an intervention order in place. Your client is required to comply with it." The man was sentenced as a serious violent offender on the threat-to-kill charges. He was jailed for up to 26 months with a 12-month non-parole period. "It's just too serious to do anything else," Mr Vandersteen said.

Crews battle grass fire By Brendan Rees Firefighters managed to control a grass and scrub fire at a vacant black in Hampton Park on Tuesday, 20 March. The fire was reported just before 5.10pm in Strabane Way with crews from Cranbourne, Hallam, and Hampton Park helping fight the blaze which was brought under control at 5.35pm. Police also attended the scene. A CFA spokesperson said the cause of the fire was unknown at this stage. Eyewitness Aaron Grant said although there was gusty winds on the day, it was fortunate the blaze didn’t spread too quickly to neighbouring properties. “Things could’ve been a lot worse. Bits and pieces were smouldering. It wasn’t too bad compared to recent fires.” “Being so dry for months in advance, it wouldn’t have taken long to spread,” he said. “Being a vacant block like that with just grass and trees it doesn’t take long for all that to come alight.”

An ACE helper for children By Brendan Rees It’s considered one of the most important aspects of developing a child’s mind. And a thanks to the help of a charity, more children starting school in Casey will be given a head start in reading. The Aiding Casey Education (ACE) Foundation led by Cranbourne GP Dr Leon Shapero purchased 3,000 books to make sure every prep student had a reading book. ACE administrator Teresa Muratore and Dr Shapero visited schools in Casey recently and were surprised to learn many youngsters had never come into contact with a book. Ms Muratore said the books would now be given to every child who may not have easy access to books; providing them with greater opportunities to kick-start their learning development. “ACE Foundation can help local students live the life they dream and ensure kids can see and read,” she said. “We at ACE are extremely proud and we would like to raise awareness and the benefits that each program provides not only to the students but to our community as a whole.” Since last year, the Foundation has also

provided free eye testing to primary school children and will pay for glasses if they require them. “The program has been a major success and fortunately ACE Foundation is in a position to extend the reach of this program to all primary schools students at 43 schools,” said Ms Muratore. In the next coming months ACE Foundation together with Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre will be running ‘Feed Hungry Minds’ Inspiring Hope Campaign. “It will run for approximately 4 weeks. We will have donation bins placed at community locations where we ask residents in the City of Casey to donate Up and Go meal replacements to be distributed to 12 local Secondary Schools,” Ms Muratore said. Each month the Foundation delivers 2,500 meal replacement drinks to schools for children who arrive at school without having breakfast or a prepared lunch. “The feedback we have received from the teachers involved in the program is overwhelmingly and very positive.” Locations of the bins will be announced in the coming weeks.

"Handrails will be added to Bunjil Place's outdoor footbridges in response to safety concerns. Bunjil Close Out Projects manager Mark Dibsdale said the handrails for the three bridges crossing the dry-moat have been designed and ordered. There is at least a one-metre drop from the footbridges into the moat. The bridges had been deemed compliant by the appointed building surveyor, Mr Dibsdale said. "However, even though the bridges are compliant, Council has listened to concerns from some members of the community and will be installing new handrails in keeping with the sleek and modern design of Bunjil Place" There had also been complaints about Bunjil's indoor wooden shell structure being a trip hazard as well as difficulties finding the foyer's glass entrances. Mr Dibsdale said the feet of the wooden shell was barricaded, with further evaluation on signage and wayfinding. He said an independent access audit had been commissioned to recommend further improvements. "The associated costs for these recommendations will not be known until the completion of the audit. "At this time the scope of works will be considered to determine if they are covered by the existing building contract as defects or omissions."

Visitors using the closest bays in the Magid Drive car park are required to cross Patrick North East Drive to reach Bunjil. Mr Dibsdale said the 22 accessible parking bays were located as close as possible to the entrances of Casey ARC and Bunjil. An additional two accessible parking bays were set to be installed in the ARC car park. Mr Dibsdale said works to repair panels that were torn from Bunjil's southern roof section were expected to be completed by the end of March.

‘Hub’ drives radical change By Cam Lucadou-Wells Arthur Wren Hall and Hampton Park Community House could be demolished as part of a radical Casey Council draft master-plan for central Hampton Park. The plan creates a 1.4-hectare 'community hub' including a $15-million-plus two-storey community hall with multi-purpose rooms as well as a new library on the site of the 24-yearold Arthur Wren Hall. The existing community house will make way for a car park and town square, and the current library will become a family and children's centre.

The plan also includes a landscaped eastwest 'main street' built between the community hub and the retail precinct. A vote on the plan was pulled from a Casey Council meeting agenda on 20 March. It has been deferred until May to allow further negotiations with the community house and Hampton Park Progress Association (HPPA), which is a financial stakeholder in Arthur Wren Hall. Councillor Wayne Smith told the meeting that the HPPA as well the then-Shire of Cranbourne and Federal Government had co-funded the hall.

The HPPA had sold a former hall and a Scout hall to raise money for the project. According to the HPPA, the two former properties are now worth $1.7 million. Cr Smith said Casey needed to do research whether it was liable to compensate the HPPA before the master-plan was put on public exhibition. The HPPA declined to comment to Star News. Hampton Park Community House manager Tania Sacco said she'd been assured by Casey that the community house was a "vital" part of the hub. The community house provided affordable

childcare, and array of English-language, womens leadership and other courses. "We've been firm minded that if they want u to move we need more space, not less," Ms Sacco said. "Hampton Park, like the City of Casey, is a growing community. "More and more people need help from the community house." Ms Sacco said the area had been "going up and down like a yo-yo for 15 years", and needed a focus on employment services. "This is a great step forward to revitalise the community."

Suffraging for their art in creative steps By Cam Lucadou-Wells Breaking through ceilings is nothing new for 20-year-old choreographer Alexandra Dellaportas. Aptly in a show based on the British Suffrage movement, her troupe of 28 young dancers will perform Shatter on the giant stage at Bunjil Place. For the first time, Bunjil's stage pit will be filled by a 35-piece professional orchestra for the show. Delllaportas formed her non-profit Spark Youth Dance Company out of frustration for the lack of opportunity for young performers on the Mornington Peninsula. She was just 18 at the time, a year after finishing school. She decided the best solution was to be the solution. She works with an all-youth creative team of choreographers, directors, lighting, costume and set designers and dancers aged 7-25.

Their goal is to create performances, Dellaportas says. "We're just here for the love of the artform." As a "huge feminist", Dellaportas was drawn to teaching her dancers about the Suffragette movement. Many didn't know that women had to fight for the vote, or what feminism and the fight for gender equality was, Dellaportas said. She says the Suffragettes' story - full of strength, passion, hunger strikes and violence - was mightily relevant in 2018. Still, the debate rages for equal pay and for the end of #metoo abuse in entertainment circles, she notes. "Just teaching the little ones that females don't have to be soft all the time. Together after 40 lost years

From Page 1 "She was crying, I was crying," Joao recalls. "Every day she would pray and burn a candle. She'd dedicate that to finding me. "She said she never abandoned me." In 1975, he had been taken from his home in the jungle hills of East Timor by his father's mistress Amelia. Amelia looked after him quite well in the capital Dili - apart from the kidnapping, he says. Joao says as war took hold, it was unsafe for his mother to go look for him. "You go out, you get shot." As bullets whizzed through the streets, Amelia and his father Carlos Lascasas then tried to flee the island with hundreds of others aboard a refugee ship. Joao helped carry their bags onto the docks, then was told by Carlos to stay behind, to go back home. In that moment, Carlos - a police officer was himself ordered to stay to attend an emergency. Seizing the opportunity, Joao hid on board amongst the desperate crowd. He was repeatedly beaten and scolded by Amelia for his disobedience. In Darwin, authorities organising the refugees forced her to accept Joao as her 'brother'. They settled in the town of Tancos in Portugal where they later reunited with Joao's father. "He went ballistic," Joao said. "He got a big surprise to see me." Joao was well schooled, took to a partygoing lifestyle and later joined the army as a paratrooper. In 1995, he settled in Australia seeking better economic prospects with his wife Brigida and children Catia and Helder. Gaining a permanent visa, he started basic English classes. He worked long hours as a printer, saving enough for a comfortable abode with an array of home gadgets.

She secretly suffered from cancer, her death in 2013 coming as a complete shock to Joao. He has mixed feelings about his former kidnapper who he says loved him and never mistreated him. He paid for her burial and a plot in Dandenong Cemetery. Soon after her death, Joao fell ill with anxiety and sweats. His heart was constantly racing. Within months, he was installed with a pacemaker. "When she died, that's when everything that happened in my life came up. My heart was broken. "I wanted my mum." After the video calls with his mother, a happiness rose within. "It was like a blessing." In September, Joao will fly back to his homeland and meet his mother. They will do DNA testing for confirmation of their reunion. He'll bring two photos of his early childhood in East Timor. His mother has no surviving photos of him as a child. "I've been looking for answers all my life. "When I'm there I want to know all the stories." Joao beams at the prospect. "It's a miracle."

The store has a great team of volunteers, with many having recently celebrated five or more years of service with Salvos Stores.

Jiu-jitsu pioneer hits Paky By Russell Bennett Pakenham's Gracie Elite Academy, now at its new base just off Bald Hill Road, once again played host recently to one of jiu-jitsu's true pioneers in an effort to take its students to the next level. UFC Hall of Fame member Royce Gracie joined with Gracie Elite's Jhunior Guarnido for seminars aimed at improving his students' knowledge and skills in the discipline. "I don't believe in good students or bad students," Royce Gracie said. "There are good teachers and bad teachers. "The student is looking for the self-defence side, and we're here to teach that. "People think we're just fighters. No. The fighting part is just something that we do personally, but we're here to teach self-defence." Gracie's training in jiu-jitsu began from an early age with his father Helio in their native Brazil. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2003 alongside Ken Shamrock and has the record for the longest MMA match in history - 90 minutes. In 2014 he was named as one of the 50 Greatest Athletes in the World by Sports Illustrated. "People ask me all the time - how much do you train in a day? Well, I consider resting, sleeping and eating as part of my training," Gracie said. "I don't drink or smoke, so it's 24/7. "Jhunior has been with my family for a long time. He was a student one day, himself, and we have a great relationship. "You don't have to be big or strong (for jiujitsu), you don't even have to be fast. It's about knowledge, so once you know, it's easy. You just have to know.

We're going to teach you how to defend yourself - we're not going to ask you to be a world champion MMA fighter. Our goal is to prepare you to defend yourself." Guarnido spoke of his respect for Gracie, saying he's the reason he stepped into the world of jiu-jitsu in the first place. "He's the reason I started jiu-jitsu and everyone the same age as me started because of him as well," he said. "If it wasn't for him, no one would be teaching outside of Brazil because Royce was the guy who put jiu-jitsu into the world. He showed everyone what it was."

The Pakenham Warriors picked up wins across the board in a very successful round of Big V basketball on the weekend. The Warriors' Division 2 men's squad picked up their first win of the season against the Mildura Heat on Saturday night at Casey Life. In a back and forth battle, neither team gave an inch as the game went down to the wire. Big man Josh Bjelan's 17 points were crucial, as were the contributions from Hayden Davey (13 points, 9 rebounds) and Jordan Jacotine (10 points, 8 rebounds). With solid contributions from many players, the Warriors held on to win 72-68 in a nail-biting affair. Mildura's troubles from the free-throw line ultimately proved costly for the visitors as they only drained 41% (7/17) of their shots from the charity stripe. In Youth League 2 Men, the Warriors were far too good for the LaTrobe City Energy, as they also recorded their first win of the season. The Comets got off to a tailor made start, with two goals in the opening 15 minutes from Dejan Radojicic and John Prescott setting the game up and immediately putting City under the pump. Not content with their 2-0 half time lead, the Comets found a late score in the 79th minute through Connor Belger, to send the crowd into raptures and on top of the table after one round. Demons have done it again By Nick Creely In yet another thrilling chapter of the storied rivalry between Pakenham and Kooweerup, the club's brightest junior stars played out an absolute belter of an Under 16 Red grand final, with the Demons emerging one wicket winners at Kooweerup Reserve. With the Demons famously winning their second consecutive WGCA Premier premiership on that very ground, against the very same club only weeks ago, it caps off an incredible cricket season for the club. Rain halted play last Sunday on the opening weekend of the junior clash, meaning the match spilled over to the following Saturday, and it was truly set up for something special. Resuming at 7/40 in reply to Pakenham's lowly 60, the Demons showed immense grit among a desperate Lions outfit, and despite

moments where the match could have genuinely gone either way, the home side showed nerves of steel to find the runs with just one wicket left in the shed. Incredibly, only three players crossed double figures across both innings, with Mitch Cammarano's vital 17 perhaps the match winning knock in a game dominated by pressure and terrific bowling. Apart from Cammarano's knock, it was actually the extras column that did the job for the home side, with Pakenham bowling nine wides and six no balls in a total of 15 extras, the second top score for the chasing side. But it's such an ironic twist, the Demons can lay claim to yet another grand final victory over the Lions this season, and their rivalry is almost certain to continue into the 2018/19 season.

Last Thursday the ladies played the second round of the 4BBB Challenge and Leah Barker and Marg Andrews knew they had to play well if they were going to take out the two week competition. They won the day with 45 points but just fell short by scoring 86 points for the two weeks. The winners were Bev Clymo and Anne Donovan with 88 points on a countback from Kay Jones and Nola Kerslake. Bev seems to flourish over the two week competitions as she won the Summer Cup earlier this year. On Friday, Harry Elyasie won with 37 points on a countback from Fred Uini. It was the day to play early on Saturday because the conditions deteriorated significantly

as the day went on. The rain was steady, which is exactly what the course needed but not for those who are once a week players. The A Grade winner was Clint Walker with an impressive 41 points with Peter Reilly second with 35 points. The B Grade winner was Bernie 'Nearest the Pin' Gramc with 40 points with Don Towan runner-up with 38 points. The overall winner and winner of C Grade was Warren Arnott with 41 points with Graeme Steel runner up. Many players will be pleased they finished because they won a ball with 34 points. The winner on Sunday was Sean Bell with 39 points. He is a visitor so he will be happy to return to continue his good form. In good news for the Club, the three Pennant teams have all made the finals, which will be played at Drouin on 8 April.
