Police are investigating after a woman’s body was discovered dead in Cranbourne East last Friday afternoon, 23 March. Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said the body was found at an address in Collison Road at about 2pm. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined and no further information was known. Neighbours expressed their shock over the incident, saying the residents at the property usually kept to themselves. One neighbour, who wished remain anonymous, said a couple who lived at the property where the body was found had separated about two to three months ago. “He’s not home very often. Since they’ve split up, whenever he does seem to come back, doesn’t seem to be till late. He’s not there for very long and he disappears again,” he said. “Something’s fishy there because there’s no way they’re going to find a dead woman in the house and him not know something about it.” He said the man was aged in his 30s and worked as a truck driver. He had spoken to the man a couple of times and believed he was an ice user. “Apparently had a couple of drug dealers coming around from what he was saying.” He said the couple also had a baby but added: “Whenever he wasn’t there, you never saw her (mother). “It was like she couldn’t leave the house. You never saw her outside with the child or anything. Even when he was home, you never saw her outside.” “Basically he hasn’t been staying at the house. He said he was thinking about moving out, selling the place and moving back to his mum’s” “He’s another crack head. He seems nice enough but I don’t like getting too friendly with people who are involved in that.” He said some of his mates looked like “outright little gutter lickers.” A resident, Mel, who asked not reveal her surname, said she had not seen anyone at the property for almost two months. “I don’t know that family at all. The only information I know is that the couple were splitting up.” She said she never experienced any problems with the residents at the house.

Death threats: jail appeal By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man is appealing against his jail term for a series of attacks and deadly threats on his expartner, including holding her at knifepoint at her home in a Hampton Park boarding house. The 25-year-old, with 18 prior convictions for assault, called out to his mother in the court gallery "See you in two years" after he was jailed for up to 26 months at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 26 March. "I need you to put a message on Facebook. "Love you, Mum." In defiance of an intervention order, the man attacked the 23-year-old female victim twice at the Oaktree Drive boarding house on 28 February and 2 March. At the time he was on a Victorian County Court community corrections order. On the first occasion, he punched her in the face during an argument. Late on 1 March, he stalked outside all of the rooms screaming that he would kill her, her son and mother. The next morning, he returned in what was described as a "psychotic" enraged state. He

held a kitchen knife to his ex-partner's throat, telling her he'd kill her. He assaulted others that tried to intervene, and held a knife to another female resident's throat. The ex-partner was cornered by the man in her kitchen. She threw a coffee cup at him, and fled. He caught up to her on Pound Road. She was punched, fell and curled up in a ball to protect herself. He punched her with both fists to the back of the head several times. He left the scene before police arrived. Over following days, the man repeatedly phoned and texted the ex-partner to drop the charges or he and his "mates" would harm her, her mother and her family. He threatened to tie her up to a stolen car and burn her alive, to put her in a "f***ing drum" and to burn down her mother's house. On 19 March, he surrendered himself to a police station where he was arrested and charged. The man also pleaded guilty to possessing nunchucks, found while he was a drug-affected state in a Capel Sound residence in November.

He had complex mental health issues, including ADHD, autism and paranoia as well as low intellect and a potential acquired brain injury, his lawyer told the court. This was compounded by drug use, the court heard. He had been released from a 48-day stint in jail in early February. Three days later, he was found naked and in a psychotic state on the side of a highway. He was admitted to a hospital psychiatric ward for two nights, the court was told. The lawyer requested the man was shortlisted for the "limited" number of mentalhealth beds at Ravenhall and Thomas Embling correction facilities. "He needs some sentencing options that can help him rehabilitate." From the dock, the man pleaded for the court to give him a "chance". "I want to improve my life, get away from my criminal past. "I got caught up with this girl. When I left jail, she wouldn't leave me alone. She caused a lot of dramas for me. "She brought a bloke around to attack me."

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man had 25 prior convictions for assault and violence-related offences as well as multiple breaches of intervention orders since 2006. He was "guarded" about the man's rehabilitation prospects; the current CCO "didn't work". "I get it that imprisonment is more difficult for him. "That doesn't address the issue of the protection of the community." Mr Vandersteen rebutted the defence submission that the ex-partner had a significant ice addiction and had also sent texts to the man. "So she deserves this? "There's an intervention order in place. Your client is required to comply with it." The man was sentenced as a serious violent offender on the threat-to-kill charges. He was jailed for up to 26 months with a 12-month non-parole period. "It's just too serious to do anything else," Mr Vandersteen said.

Cause under investigation as fire destroys home By Brendan Rees A home in Cranbourne North has been destroyed by fire on Wednesday evening, 21 March, with the cause of the blaze still unknown. Fire crews were called to the single-storey brick-veneer house at Mountainview Boulevard around 5.10pm. It took firefighters half an hour to bring the fire under control which extensively damaged the house. CFA Operations Officer Paul Summons said luckily a couple were able to safely evacuate the house without any injuries. He said an investigation would be conducted into the cause. Twenty-five firefighters from Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Frankston, and Hallam battled the blaze to ensure it did not spread to neighbouring properties. Six vehicles and a breathing apparatus response vehicle were also at the scene. Mr Summons said CFA sent an advice message was sent to Cranbourne residents at the time about smoke in the area and to stay informed. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and police are also investigating. Eyewitness Aaron Grant said the house was well alight but firefighters were quick to contain the blaze from spreading to neighbouring houses. "It could've been a lot worse," he said. Up to 100 people gathered to watch firefighters put out the fire, Mr Grant said. "I got there at there within the first 10 to 15 minutes of the fire." "There was a flame that ended up relighting itself in the garage," he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 179105 Mr Grant said there was a large amount of items stored in the garage."They had a lot of clothes and stuff like that including store shelving, racks. I think it was all their business stuff which all got water soaked."

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk As Easter looms, it’s easy for the wrong message to spread. Exactly where the eggs fit in with the rabbits remains somewhat unclear. The hot cross buns hit the supermarket shelves earlier and earlier each year, and it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters. So perhaps the answer is to treat Easter as a sort of mini-Christmas - which seems appropriate for our second-biggest annual religious festival. Leaving the thornier questions of religious specificity aside, maybe there’s one aspect on which we can all agree. Maybe Easter - coming as it does hard on the heels of the busy start to the year, and many Melbourne major events - is just the refreshing tonic we all need. As He rose, perhaps this is the time we can all take a little mental helath check, and smell the roses. Maybe less of the frantic road trip, and more of the quiet contemplation and relaxing at home. Maybe put aside that long list of jobs - and the urge every Australian male gets to build a gazebo, when confronted with a four-day break. So maybe the eaves don’t get painted this year. Maybe, instead, you spend time with the family, or reading, or DVD bingeing, or just plain old relaxing. After all, there’s no need for vengeance and hard hearts - the nation has already crucified a couple of cricketers to commemorate the season. But if you do feel especially religious, maybe spare a prayer for the Australian Cricket Team - I have the sense they’re going to need it. - Jason Beck

A South-Eastern suburbs couple have happily celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Ken and Jean Perry, of Cranbourne, married on the 29 March, 1958 at the church of St Martin's in Bilbrough in the UK after a five and half year courtship. They spent their honeymoon at the Channel Isles - a group of islands in the English Channel, off the coast of France. The couple celebrated their anniversary at the Blue Hills Village in Cranbourne. "We had a lovely day there with 70 guests," says Jean. "My son brought my friend over of 57 years from Nottingham." Ken, 82 and Jean, 80, received letters from the Queen, the Governor-General, the Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne and the Prime Minister to mark their milestone anniversary.

They have two twin sons who live in Cranbourne and Seaton, as well as eight grandchildren and eight great children. In 1992, the couple moved to Australia. "I worked for two nurse agencies and then I got regular work with the Frankston council at a hostel as a carer," Jean says. The couple met in England as neighbours where Ken was one of 10 children. From there, they "just got talking." "We went to the pictures and that's how it carried on," Jean says, adding their first movie together at the cinemas was 'Gone from the wind'. When asked the key to a long-lasting marriage, the couple say "Work together and share, no secrets, and always talk."

Two charged Two Cranbourne men have been charged after police raided properties in Cranbourne where drugs, ammunition and a number of power tools were seized. Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit detectives executed warrants at on Phillip Court and Ruffy Drive in Cranbourne following a burglary at business address in Beaconsfield Upper last week. The alleged incident occurred at an address on Emerald Road about 3.30am on Friday 16 March. Four men were arrested. A 35-year-old Cranbourne man was charged with a range of offences including theft of motor vehicle, burglary, possess drug of dependence and possess ammunition. A 30-year-old man, also from Cranbourne, was charged with burglary and theft-related offences.

ACE finding right words By Brendan Rees It’s considered one of the most important aspects of developing a child’s mind. And a thanks to the help of a charity, more children starting school in Casey will be given a head start in reading. The Aiding Casey Education (ACE) Foundation led by Cranbourne GP Dr Leon Shapero purchased 3,000 books to make sure every prep student had a reading book. ACE administrator Teresa Muratore and Dr Shapero visited schools in Casey recently and were surprised to learn many youngsters had never come into contact with a book. Ms Muratore said the books would now be given to every child who may not have easy access to books; providing them with greater opportunities to kick-start their learning development. “ACE Foundation can help local students live the life they dream and ensure kids can see and read,” she said. “We at ACE are extremely proud and we would like to raise awareness and the benefits that each program provides not only to the students but to our community as a whole.” Since last year, the Foundation has also provided free eye testing to primary school children and will pay for glasses if they require them. “The program has been a major success and fortunately ACE Foundation is in a position to extend the reach of this program to all primary schools students at 43 schools,” said Ms Muratore. We will have donation bins placed at community locations where we ask residents in the City of Casey to donate Up and Go meal replacements to be distributed to 12 local Secondary Schools,” Ms Muratore said. Each month the Foundation delivers 2,500 meal replacement drinks to schools for children who arrive at school without having breakfast or a prepared lunch. “The feedback we have received from the teachers involved in the program is overwhelmingly and very positive.” Locations of the bins will be announced in the coming weeks.

Crews battled grass fire By Brendan Rees Firefighters managed to control a grass and scrub fire at a vacant black in Hampton Park on Tuesday, 20 March. The fire was reported just before 5.10pm in Strabane Way with crews from Cranbourne, Hallam, and Hampton Park helping fight the blaze which was brought under control at 5.35pm. Police also attended the scene. A CFA spokesperson said the cause of the fire was unknown at this stage.

Eyewitness Aaron Grant said although there was gusty winds on the day, it was fortunate the blaze didn’t spread too quickly to neighbouring properties. “Things could’ve been a lot worse. Bits and pieces were smouldering. It wasn’t too bad compared to recent fires.” “Being so dry for months in advance, it wouldn’t have taken long to spread,” he said. “Being a vacant block like that with just grass and trees it doesn’t take long for all that to come alight.”

Man injured in hit and run By Brendan Rees A man in his 40s was taken to hospital in a serious condition following a hit-run collision in Cranbourne West on Sunday, 18 March. Investigators have been told a car was travelling along the Western Port Highway about 4pm near Thompsons Road. A blue Holden Commodore attempted to overtake the victim’s vehicle but clipped it, causing it to swerve, hit a median strip and lose control. It then rolled onto its side and came to rest in a paddock. The Holden took off from the scene. The driver of the car that was struck, a 26-year-old Ferntree Gully man, was not injured.

An ambulance spokesperson said paramedics were called to reports of a car roll over where they treated two people at the scene. She said a man aged in his 40s suffered injuries to his head and hand. The man was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition. A second patient, aged in their 20s, had no obvious injuries. A CFA media spokesperson said Cranbourne and Dandenong fire brigade units were called to the rescue about 4pm and arrived at about 4.15pm where they found a wheelchair-bound person trapped in the rear of a small van. Police are investigating. Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Dealer Principal, Tom Davis, told autotalk.com.au that the win was a reflection not only on the dedication of his staff, but also the community support enjoyed by the dealership. “The support we receive from the Cranbourne and wider community coupled with great, committed staff was what got us across the line”, Mr Davis said. “We did in excess of 800 vehicles out of the

Cranbourne dealership, but it isn’t just about sales, it’s in service, parts and all aspects of the business.” Cranbourne Hyundai is part of the Booran Group which has 300 staff. Cranbourne has about 50 staff working in all areas of the business. Most are locals. “We’ve also got our sister Berwick dealership, and Dandenong, all within about half an hour of each other,” said Mr Davis. Five generations, nine decades By Brendan Rees A 93 year-old Cranbourne man has celebrated a rare feat he thought he would never see. His great-great grandson Dustin James Britter was born on 13 January at Swan Hill Hospital weighing nine pound seven, meaning he is now the fifth generation in the same family. There are nine decades separating Dennis Mitchell and his newly born great-great-grandson. Little Dustin joins three females in the family, including mum Jessica Beasy, 23, grandmother Jan Bryent, 43, and great-grandmother Sue Grima, 64. Ms Grima, who lives in Cranbourne said her dad, Mr Mitchell was proud and “over the moon” with the news. Ms Grima said she visited her granddaughter at Swan Hill the day after Dustin was born. “She surprised us all. She’s a beautiful mum. He (Dustin) was actually born on my daughter’s birthday,” she said.

She said getting the family together for a photo at the same place at the same time was a rarity but fortunately the family met at Mr Mitchell’s home in Cranbourne on March 11. “We don’t get together very often but when we do really lovely.” She said not much was planned for Easter with the family as she and her husband are in the process of building a house in Longwood. At 17, Ms Grima came out to Australia with her parents in 1971 from Southampton, England. “My mum and dad were 10 pound poms. They came out here with me and my brother in 71. It was just the four of us. Now our family has expanded that much,” she said. She said it was very life changing: “I left all my friends behind and came out here and starting a whole new life.” “I’ve got two daughters in Swan Hill. My brother’s in Adelaide so I don’t see him now unfortunately.”

Jaycar has arrived in town

Head to Bunjil Place these school holidays for non-stop fun.

Free school holiday fun Bunjil Place will host a range of free activities for the school holidays as it transforms the outdoor plaza into a big kids' playground of inflatable fun and games. Aimed at youth aged 10 and over, kids can challenge their friends to a game of Eliminator or the Wipeout-style Big Balls Obstacle Course from Tuesday 3 April to Thursday 5 April. The Mega Xtreme Obstacle Course will replace the Eliminator from Tuesday 10 April to Thursday 12 April. There will also be free cricket clinics run by Cricket Victoria on the Bunjil Place grass area every Thursday in April from 11.30am to 1pm. Girls and boys of all ages are welcome. Other free events at Bunjil Place over the holidays include Friday Night Flicks with a double bill of Easter-themed films on 30

March. Films will include the Hollywood classic Easter Parade at 2pm, plus Hop at 6.30pm. On 6 April, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory screens at 6.30pm, and cult classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off is on 13 April. For the bigger kids, there's the free exhibition Self-made: zines and artists books at the Bunjil Place gallery; and in the foyer on Sunday 8 April there'll be a Zine Fair curated by Melbourne-based zine and artist books promoter Sticky Institute. The Bunjil Place foyer, theatre, gallery and library will be closed from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Usual opening hours resume Tuesday 3 April. February 2018 saw the opening of Cranbourne’s Jaycar Electronics; the 112th store in the growing chain of electronic and scientific retail outlets. panels, TV wall brackets, plus “those black boxes which make everyone’s tech devices connect.” “The CCTV kits and the new range of SWANN Wi-Fi battery powered cameras have been exceptionally popular as more and more businesses and residents in the area look to secure their property by keeping an eye on it and warding off would be thieves,” Peter said. “New technology means that these cameras and kits now offer remote viewing on a smartphone as well as recording onto a hard drive or memory card, making them more useful.” Peter is keen for everyone to pop into the store, meet his friendly team who will show them around and help them find the product that best solves their problems. Direct from the Adelaide Fringe Festival, FREEZE! promises “edge of your seat’’ fascination, as Nick precariously balances rocks on unbelievable angles; in the peaceful garden locale at both the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria’s Melbourne Garden and Cranbourne Garden. Showcasing the patience and unique skill he developed a child, Nick has created a 5080 minute stone sculpturing performance. No glue, cement or any other trick is involved.

Kids are invited to build a cubbie these school holidays at the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens. The audience is absorbed into Nick’s intense focus, as he skilfully creates sculptures of beauty. This Easter, coinciding with the launch of Nature Play Week, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria will host Botanica in the Cranbourne gardens. These free family events are inspired by artist Darryl Cordell’s childhood in the bush and promote outdoor play. The public is invited to bring a picnic and join in the fun between 1114 April, from 11am to 3pm. Botanica gives families the chance to work together to build a unique village, from materials collected from the gardens. There will be activities for all ages, from a sensory touch experience with gum nuts, stones and water play for babies, to creature making and naming, leaf rubbing, an insect hotel and weaving. There will also be lemon myrtle tea and wattle seed biscuits to keep the busy builders satisfied. “I grew up on a property bordering the Victorian bush, we didn’t spend our time on screens, we spent it playing cowboys and Indians and building cubbies,” said Darryl. “When I was asked to develop a program for the gardens, I thought it would be great to share these experiences, as city kids don’t often get the opportunity to create something outside, with natural materials.” The program previously ran at the Melbourne Gardens, where it was extremely popular and attracted hundreds of people. Many stayed all day to play in their cubbies and enjoy the gardens as a family. “I have been really amazed at the reactions from the children and adults who have participated in this programme,” said Darryl. “There has been so much enthusiasm and determination to spend more time outside together.” Botanica commences at 11am, Wednesday

Alana's Field of dreams By Hayley Wildes Alana Field will be representing her country at the Junior World Track Championships in Switzerland later this year. Field, who is a Year 12 student at Berwick's Beaconhills College, was selected to the Australian team after a dominant display at the National Track Cycling Championships in February. At the meet she won two gold medals and a silver, on her way to being crowned the Under-19 Champion of Champions. Speaking about the competition - her sixth and final time competing at the Junior National Track Cycling Championships - Field admitted there were plenty of nerves. "It was very nerve-racking. I just went in with expectations that weren't too high and I met all of them based on my times that I wanted. I was really happy with my results and medals." Field said. Field, a member of the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club, has been track cycling since she was eight years old and it was because of her sister that she first tried the sport. "My sister started riding bikes and I got a bit bored of watching her at all the competitions, so I just got on the bike and really enjoyed it." Field said. It is clear that cycling runs in the family. Her sister Courtney was the 2014 Junior World

Sprint Champion and a four-time world silver medallist. With the Junior World Track Championships being held in August, Field is excited about the opportunity to take on the best cyclists in the world and wear the green and gold. "It will be really exciting. I've never really competed against many people from overseas, so it will be a new challenge." Field said. "I look forward to racing and hopefully doing myself and Australia proud. It's a new experience and it kind of opens up my eyes to what my future in cycling could be like." With almost five months until the championships, Field will be training up to six days a week in preparation and is hoping to set personal best times in Switzerland. "A medal would be amazing, but I'm not sure about my competitors. I'm just looking forward to getting some PBs if I can - that's probably the main thing I want." Field said. Field credits some great coaches who have helped her tremendously along the way. "I've had really good coaches." Field said. "I had Hilton Clarke coaching me leading up to State Championships and then Glenn Doney from the VIS, he helped me out as my coach leading up to Nationals. They've both been really helpful." Field will compete in three events; the sprint, keirin and 500m time trial.

Doveton's massive season-opening clash against Cranbourne just got a whole lot bigger after the Doves secured the services of Western Bulldogs star Matthew Boyd. In one of the biggest recruiting coups in local football, the three-time All-Australian and member of the Bulldogs' drought-breaking premiership team of 2016 will play several games for the Doves this season. Boyd, now a development coach with Collingwood, will work his playing schedule around his coaching commitments with the Magpies. He will make his debut in a blockbuster Good Friday clash against the Eagles at the Doves home ground at Robinson Oval. The 35-year-old Boyd, who retired last year after a magnificent 292-game career, said it was funny how the cards had fallen - leading to his signing with the Doves. "There is a small connection there, I went to primary school with Aaron (Doveton President Aaron Henwood) but apart from that it just came through to talking to a mate from my daughter's school," Boyd said. "I had a couple of conversations with Aaron and it just went from there, basically I've been getting itchy feet and the offer from Doveton came at the perfect time." Despite being one of the most decorated, well-respected and hard-nosed figures during his 16 years in the AFL, Boyd said he was surprisingly nervous about entering his new surroundings. "It already feels like I'm out of my comfort zone, being with the one club for so long you become used to that environment and this will be a new and exciting challenge," he said. "Obviously we have a pretty young group at Doveton, so if I can pass on some of my experience and then learn something back from the playing group it should work out pretty well in the end. "Now that it's done I'm really looking forward to it. I'm a competitive beast and nothing ever fills that void of not playing football." Boyd's journey to the big time has been well documented. Comets off to dream start By Nick Creely FFV SOCCER WRAP ROUND 1 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST It was the perfect start and a terrific launching pad for the season, with Casey Comets dismantling Malvern City 3-0 on Friday night in front of a healthy home crowd. The Comets got off to a tailor made start, with two goals in the opening 15 minutes from Dejan Radojicic and John Prescott setting the game up and immediately putting City under the pump. Not content with their 2-0 half time lead, the Comets found a late score in the 79th minute through Connor Belger, to send the crowd into raptures and on top of the table after one round. In other matches to start the season, Richmond SC defeated Beaumaris 3-1, Warragul United accounted for St Kilda SC 2-1, Mornington fell 0-1 at home to Manningham United, Eltham stood firm to register a 2-1 win over Springvale South, and Morwell drew 3-3 with Caulfield United at Ronald Reserve. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST It's the local derby that everyone waits for, with Doveton SC hosting Berwick City at Waratah Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Both sides enjoyed strong 2017 seasons, and were desperate to get their 2018 campaign off on the right foot. It was a tight, tense opening half, with Simon Mur finding the back of the net right on the stroke of half time to give the Doves a 1-0 lead. And that goal proved crucial in the momentum of the match, with the Doves scoring in the 65th minute to essentially ice the game, not allowing City to stage a comeback despite a late goal to Chris L'Enclume in the 80th minute that softened the defeat slightly. City host their first home match for the season at Jack Thomas Reserve against Doncaster on Saturday night, while the Doves travel to Esther Park to play Mooroolbark SC. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH

CRANBOURNE BOWLS Tuesday was a historic day for Cranbourne Bowls Club, with the women's side defeating Lalor by 12 shots to become Division 1 champions. The ladies now have won the silverware, in addition to their premiership medallions. Lalor put up a good fight and the game was played in good spirits but only one team could win and Cranbourne was determined to win this one with the final score after a tight struggle in the Bowls Victoria Pennant Division 1 ladies sectional grand-final: - Cranbourne 65 defeating Lalor 53. This means that next bowling season, the Cranbourne ladies will progress to play at the highest level in the state by joining the Premier League. After the game the ladies celebrated back at the club and proudly showed off their winning medallions and the huge Division 1 premiership flag that now hangs proudly on the clubroom wall. The club is also expecting plenty of interest from potential new players, particularly from the surrounding Casey and Peninsula areas who want to play at an elite level of bowls. Narre South president Nathan Tracy has put the rumours to bed - Scott Phillips is going nowhere next cricket season. Tracy; who also announced he will be stepping down as president of the club; confirmed that the legendary local cricketers has put pen to paper for the next two seasons, as the Lions' captain-coach in DDCA Turf 2. With rumours circulating that Phillips could be headed to a Turf 1 club after scoring 1315 runs at 57.17 and taking 93 wickets at 10.06 in his first two years at Strathaird Reserve after an extraordinary career in the MPCA, Tracy said the chatter was simply wrong, and quite "funny". "We understand that everyone will chat when you have someone like Scott; I know Mordialloc had a chat with him, and the rumours are bandied around everywhere, and I got contacted him quickly and he knew nothing about it and wanted to re-sign that day," he said. "He never considered moving, when I contacted him, he told me there was no fact to the rumours; it was all over the shop, everyone was

talking about it, and it's just garbage to be honest." Despite figures being thrown around about how much Phillips' contract is worth, and with suggestion that he is 'breaking the bank' at the club, Tracy said his star player is actually taking less for his actual worth, all to make the club become a powerhouse in the DDCA. "It's totally wrong; you hear figures, and he's taking less money for the next two years than what he has the previous; he just wants to be at our club, and loves the culture, and he feels like we're close to being successful enough to jump into Turf 1," he said. "Scott's results speak for themselves; he only bowled half the year, and was probably the best in the comp, and he scored 615 runs, he's that professional player everyone wants; a lot of clubs have showed interest in him, and we're very happy to have him. "When Scott plays, he brings others up with him, so it's not about the dollar; he could have gone to a lot of clubs for a lot more money, but he didn't." Tracy said despite Phillips being 39 years old, there's no reason why he can't keep dominating.

Brilliant Berwick Bowls BERWICK BOWLS At season's end, Berwick Bowling Club has achieved some fantastic Pennant results with a side from each of Midweek and Saturday pennant winning their respective sections and gaining promotion. Now, for the first time, Berwick will have two sides in Division One for Saturday pennant. This is a unique situation that very few clubs can boast. Having two Division 1 sides in either format, and with 14 sides representing the club across all Divisions in Midweek and

Saturday pennant, Berwick is clearly a strong club with great commitment and depth. The Saturday Side 2, playing in Division 2, won the final of its section and is now promoted to Division 1 moving forward. This is a great result shared by the many members who attended and gave huge and much appreciated support to the side. They progressed to the final by winning the sectional semi-final by just one shot, defeating the top side, and in another cliff-hanger they won the sectional final by just two shots (78-76):

Oswald, Anderson, Graeber, and Fothergill (s) lost 14-28. Cairncross, P. Cairncross, Janetzki, and Clarke (s) won 25-13. T. Cantwell, Walker, Rich, and Tormey (s) won 25-14. Garner, Down, Bunnell, and Azzopardi (s) lost 14-21. The Midweek Side 3, playing in Open Division 3, won its section and is now promoted to Division 1. This was another great result for Berwick, coming out clear winners with

a score of 71-46 and with huge support from club members on hand to cheer them on. Ellis, P. Steere, Harlow, and Wastell (s) won 32-15. A. Steere, Gage, Smythe, and Tormey (s) won 20-14. Turner, Epshtein, D. Fisher, and Azzopardi (s) won 19-1. Berwick had a tremendous season overall, with six sides playing finals and supported by very enthusiastic crowds of club members.

NARRE WARREN BOWLS After a sensational season when Narre Warren's Division 5 team topped the ladder after the home and away rounds, they won promotion on the first day of finals, and won the section pennant the following day. They followed up the next weekend to win their divisional quarter final game on Saturday, and their division semi-final on the Sunday. But on the last day of finals, it went wrong. On a day which may not have produced any bowls, due to heavy morning rain, the green had puddles at the start of the game, delaying it for a couple of hours. By the end of the day two Narre Warren rinks had close wins, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, Peter Lister and Norm Hosmer won 20-15, and Colin Groom, Keith Mark, Graham Dodd and Geoff Miller made a good comeback to win 16-14. The teams of
