Joao Garcia has finally found his mum - 40 years after being allegedly kidnapped as a young boy in East Timor during the Indonesian invasion in 1975.

Much like the award-winning film Lion. the Narre Warren printer has lived most of his life questing for answers about his past.

Through that time, he's lived in Portugal and Australia without knowing his mother's true name.

He had none of his birth records, which were apparently destroyed during the invasion.

His alleged kidnapper registered him under a new name and told him his mother abandoned him.

Pensioner jailed for crops

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A grandfather who set up two cannabis crops for personal use and to pay off mountainous debts has been jailed.

Rezdep Muaremov, 61, pleaded guilty at the Victorian County Court to growing a commercial quantity of plants in two home hydroponic set-ups in Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills as well as stealing more than $20,000 of electricity using a bypass system.

During a police raid of the Cranbourne property on 19 January 2017, the pensioner admitted to officers about the crop inside.

But he failed to reveal the three long-arm weapons he illegally stored in a roof cavity and behind the fridge, Judge Jeanette Morrish said during sentencing on 23 March.

In what Judge Morrish called a "fanciful story", Muaremov later told police he found

the three guns as well as 0.22-calibre cartridge ammunition during a walk in the park.

He kept the guns to go rabbit hunting that coming weekend, he told police.

Muaremov initially told police he had no link to the Endeavour Hills house, where police found his wife, daughter-in-law, two grandchildren and a 77-plant cannabis crop.

He initially denied he was even married or had a family.

At the time, Muaremov was saddled with a $158,309 Centrelink debt and $720,000 mortgages on the two houses.

His two crops weighed a total of 26.5 kilograms - which he initially claimed were for personal use.

The $1295 cash in his pocket was given to him by his son from the proceeds of dog sales, he claimed.

He'd set up the operation eight months ago using instructions from a You Tube video, he told police - who seized two folders of information on how to set up the crops.

His lawyer later told the court Muaremov was hoping to yield a profit of up to $15,000 but had yet to gain any reward from the crops.

As the sole operator, he stood to make "significant reward" from the endeavour, Judge Morrish said.

The former cleaning-business owner arrived from the former Yugoslavia in 1985.

He recently stopped working due to serious back and ankle injuries.

As a result, he developed chronic pain, depression and an anxiety disorder. He self-medicated with cannabis, he claimed.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A whippet-smart greyhound has helped save the life of a man who collapsed unconscious in his Berwick home.

Without warning, Ron Hitchen, 76, fell and stopped breathing in his hallway as he was getting ready for bed on 26 March.

His co-tenant Pam Higgins was stirred from bed by her pet greyhound Leena whining at the bedroom door.

"She started making this weird sound. I thought she was in trouble, so I called her but she wouldn't come to me.

"I got up and had a look, and I found Ron unconscious."

Ms Higgins, 70, dialled a triple-0 operator who talked her through as she delivered lifesaving CPR to Mr Hitchen.

"It was the dog that saved his life.

"Thank God he wasn't living by himself. No one would have found you."

Mr Hitchen, who was recovering at Dandenong Hospital, said Leena was the loyalest of companions.

"I think it was bloody wonderful.

"She did something you wouldn't expect from a dog.

"Her loyalty - there's nothing that you can think of that's any better."

Leena - so named because of her narrow girth - had become a "hero amongst the greyhound world".

"If it had have been Lassie (the famous Hollywood canine), millions would then believe it."

Leena and fellow pet greyhound Princess Marilyn had already been celebrities, levering smiles and pats during their visits to aged care homes.

Grateful for his second chance, Mr Hitchen said Leena was set to be rewarded with several meals of roast chicken on his return home.

"I can't wait until Christmas - she'll be getting turkey drumsticks."

Eight cases of the deadly disease meningococcal have been recorded in Casey in 2017.

A vaccine program for teenagers has been extended by the State Government in response to a statewide outbreak.

In the past three years, there have been 223 cases in Victoria including 17 in Casey, four in Cardinia and two in Greater Dandenong.

In 2017, six Victorians died from the infectious disease that inflames the brain membrane and infects blood, organs and joints.

The free vaccine program targets Year 10 students - whose age bracket is considered as greater risk of carrying and spreading the bacteria.

It's thought that one in five carry it in the back of their throats and can pass it on to family and friends.

The disease passes from prolonged physical contact such as kissing.

One in 10 cases of meningococcal prove fatal, with death striking within one or two days.

Two in 10 survive with a permanent disability such as brain damage or loss of limbs, fingers or toes.

Health Minister Martin Foley said the program provided young people "easy access to a life-saving vaccine".

"Our government is determined to protect our communities from this deadly disease by launching this meningococcal program for another year."

Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Brett Sutton said the vaccine protected against four strains of the disease.

"Ensuring eligible young people are vaccinated is essential in protecting the wider community from this deadly disease."

The vaccination program at schools, councils and GPs continues until the end of 2018.

‘Kill threat’ appeal

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man is appealing against his jail term for a series of attacks and deadly threats on his expartner, including holding her at knifepoint at her home in a Hampton Park boarding house.

The 25-year-old, with 18 prior convictions for assault, called out to his mother in the court gallery "See you in two years" after he was jailed for up to 26 months at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 26 March.

"I need you to put a message on Facebook.

"Love you, Mum." In defiance of an intervention order, the man attacked the 23-year-old female victim twice at the Oaktree Drive boarding house on 28 February and 2 March.

At the time he was on a Victorian County Court community corrections order.

On the first occasion, he punched her in the face during an argument.

Late on 1 March, he stalked outside all of the rooms screaming that he would kill her, her son and mother.

The next morning, he returned in what was described as a "psychotic" enraged state. He held a kitchen knife to his ex-partner's throat, telling her he'd kill her.

He assaulted others that tried to intervene, and held a knife to another female resident's throat.

The ex-partner was cornered by the man in her kitchen. She threw a coffee cup at him, and fled. He caught up to her on Pound Road.

She was punched, fell and curled up in a ball to protect herself. He punched her with both fists to the back of the head several times.

He left the scene before police arrived.

Over following days, the man repeatedly phoned and texted the ex-partner to drop

the charges or he and his "mates" would harm her, her mother and her family.

He threatened to tie her up to a stolen car and burn her alive, to put her in a "f***ing drum" and to burn down her mother's house.

On 19 March, he surrendered himself to a police station where he was arrested and charged.

The man also pleaded guilty to possessing nunchucks, found while he was a drugaffected state in a Capel Sound residence in November.

He had complex mental health issues, including ADHD, autism and paranoia as well as low intellect and a potential acquired brain injury, his lawyer told the court.

This was compounded by drug use, the court heard.

He had been released from a 48-day stint in jail in early February.

Three days later, he was found naked and in a psychotic state on the side of a highway.

He was admitted to a hospital psychiatric ward for two nights, the court was told.

The lawyer requested the man was shortlisted for the "limited" number of mentalhealth beds at Ravenhall and Thomas Embling correction facilities.

"He needs some sentencing options that can help him rehabilitate."

From the dock, the man pleaded for the court to give him a "chance".

Firefighters managed to control a grass and scrub fire at a vacant black in Hampton Park on Tuesday, 20 March.

The fire was reported just before 5.10pm in Strabane Way with crews from Cranbourne, Hallam, and Hampton Park helping fight the blaze which was brought under control at 5.35pm.

Police also attended the scene. A CFA spokesperson said the cause of the fire was unknown at this stage.

Eyewitness Aaron Grant said although there was gusty winds on the day, it was fortunate the blaze didn’t spread too quickly to neighbouring properties.

“Things could’ve been a lot worse. Bits and pieces were smouldering. It wasn’t too bad compared to recent fires.”

“Being so dry for months in advance, it wouldn’t have taken long to spread,” he said.

“Being a vacant block like that with just grass and trees it doesn’t take long for all that to come alight.”

He was "guarded" about the man's rehabilitation prospects; the current CCO "didn't work".

"I get it that imprisonment is more difficult for him.

"That doesn't address the issue of the protection of the community."

Mr Vandersteen rebutted the defence submission that the ex-partner had a significant ice addiction and had also sent texts to the man.

"So she deserves this?

"There's an intervention order in place.

Your client is required to comply with it."

The man was sentenced as a serious violent offender on the threat-to-kill charges.

He was jailed for up to 26 months with a 12-month non-parole period.

"It's just too serious to do anything else," Mr Vandersteen said.

A South-Eastern suburbs couple have happily celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.

Ken and Jean Perry, of Cranbourne, married on the 29 March, 1958 at the church of St Martin's in Bilbrough in the UK after a five and half year courtship.

They spent their honeymoon at the Channel Isles - a group of islands in the English Channel, off the coast of France.

The couple celebrated their anniversary at the Blue Hills Village in Cranbourne. "We had a lovely day there with 70 guests," says Jean.

"My son brought my friend over of 57 years from Nottingham."

Ken, 82 and Jean, 80, received letters from the Queen, the Governor-General, the Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne and the Prime Minister to mark their milestone anniversary.

They have two twin sons who live in Cranbourne and Seaton, as well as eight grandchildren and eight great children.

In 1992, the couple moved to Australia. "I worked for two nurse agencies and then I got regular work with the Frankston council at a hostel as a carer," Jean says.

The couple met in England as neighbours where Ken was one of 10 children. From there, they "just got talking."

"We went to the pictures and that's how it carried on," Jean says, adding their first movie together at the cinemas was 'Gone from the wind'.

When asked the key to a long-lasting marriage, the couple say "Work together and share, no secrets, and always talk."

No rift here, says mayor

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey mayor Geoff Ablett says there's "no war" between councillors and the council's administration despite losing two chief executives within a month.

After 23 years as Casey's founding CEO, Mike Tyler suddenly resigned in what was described as a "mutual decision" as of 23 February.

Since then, Sheena Frost has come and gone as acting chief executive, replaced by director Steve Dalton on 21 March.

Ms Frost continues in her role as Casey's corporate services strategic director.

"Everyone's happy," Cr Ablett said.

"There was no conflict between Sheena and I. Sheena's great to have in the organisation, just a great person.

"Steve's happy to be in the job.

"There's no war on. There's no culture problem."

The council has not formally commented on the reasons for Mr Tyler and Ms Frost's departures.

Cr Ablett denied that councillors being barred access from parts of the new council offices at Bunjil Place had been a major factor.

"Under the new CEO, there will be more access.

"There's certain parts in which our people are working. That's fair enough - we don't want to interfere in their work spaces and the roles that they have.

"Access is not the major issue."

"As with any organisation, when someone goes, there's an opportunity ... people have come up with items on how we can improve.

"It's part and parcel of a good organisation."

Mr Ablett confirmed that after Ms Frost was deposed, another director tendered their resignation.

But he was hopeful that the director may still continue in their role.

Casey continues a recruitment hunt for the CEO vacancy.

A massive boost to public and social housing is needed for hundreds of people without a home in Casey, says a support-service director.

Leanne Petrides, who runs Cranbourne Community Information and Support Service, said the 1280 homeless people recorded during the 2016 Census was almost certainly an under-estimation.

"While there was quite assertive outreach at census time, I can guarantee that there would be many people who were homeless on the night but were not counted despite best efforts.

"The homelessness issue is a real problem, and certainly growing in our community."

Ms Petrides said private rent was too expensive for people on low or fixed incomes.

"There are a number of potential options that might mitigate the problem, but really we need a massive investment into both public and social housing.

"Many people are forced into living in rooming houses which still eat up most of their income, and are often over-crowded and po-

tentially dangerous."

Ms Petrides welcomed City of Casey's proactiveness, including the establishment of a Casey-Cardinia homelessness leadership group in February.

The group includes service providers, charities, housing agencies, Victoria Police, Monash Health, Eastern Region Mental Health Association and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Casey's connected communities manager Jo Smale said a collaborative strategic approach was important in response to the "emerging housing crisis".

"Greater collaboration between the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire and housing agencies was highlighted as an important step."

Since hosting a housing summit in October, Casey Council is applying for a grant for a social and affordable housing strategy and has developed a rooming-house planning policy.

It is also investigating how to provide for affordable housing in the planning scheme.

The State Government and Opposition did not respond to Star News by deadline.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk As Easter looms, it’s easy for the wrong message to spread.

Exactly where the eggs fit in with the rabbits remains somewhat unclear.

The hot cross buns hit the supermarket shelves earlier and earlier each year, and it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters.

So perhaps the answer is to treat Easter as a sort of mini-Christmas - which seems appropriate for our second-biggest annual religious festival.

Leaving the thornier questions of religious specificity aside, maybe there’s one aspect on which we can all agree.

Maybe Easter - coming as it does hard on the heels of the busy start to the year, and many Melbourne major events - is just the refreshing tonic we all need.

As He rose, perhaps this is the time we can all take a little mental helath check, and smell the roses.

Maybe less of the frantic road trip, and more of the quiet contemplation and relaxing at home.

Maybe put aside that long list of jobs - and the urge every Australian male gets to build a gazebo, when confronted with a four-day break.

So maybe the eaves don’t get painted this year. Maybe, instead, you spend time with the family, or reading, or DVD bingeing, or just plain old relaxing.

After all, there’s no need for vengeance and hard hearts - the nation has already crucified a couple of cricketers to commemorate the season.

But if you do feel especially religious, maybe spare a prayer for the Australian Cricket Team - I have the sense they’re going to need it.

‘Hub’ drives radical change

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Arthur Wren Hall and Hampton Park Community House could be demolished as part of a radical Casey Council draft master-plan for central Hampton Park.

The plan creates a 1.4-hectare 'community hub' including a $15-million-plus two-storey community hall with multi-purpose rooms as well as a new library on the site of the 24-yearold Arthur Wren Hall.

The existing community house will make way for a car park and town square, and the current library will become a family and children's centre.

The plan also includes a landscaped eastwest 'main street' built between the community hub and the retail precinct.

A vote on the plan was pulled from a Casey Council meeting agenda on 20 March.

It has been deferred until May to allow further negotiations with the community house and Hampton Park Progress Association (HPPA), which is a financial stakeholder in Arthur Wren Hall.

Councillor Wayne Smith told the meeting that the HPPA as well the then-Shire of Cranbourne and Federal Government had co-funded the hall.

The HPPA had sold a former hall and a Scout hall to raise money for the project. According to the HPPA, the two former properties are now worth $1.7 million.

Cr Smith said Casey needed to do research whether it was liable to compensate the HPPA before the master-plan was put on public exhibition.

The HPPA declined to comment to Star News.

Hampton Park Community House manager Tania Sacco said she'd been assured by Casey that the community house was a "vital" part of the hub.

The community house provided affordable

childcare, and array of English-language, womens leadership and other courses.

"We've been firm minded that if they want u to move we need more space, not less," Ms Sacco said.

"Hampton Park, like the City of Casey, is a growing community.

"More and more people need help from the community house."

Ms Sacco said the area had been "going up and down like a yo-yo for 15 years", and needed a focus on employment services.

"This is a great step forward to revitalise the community."

Suffraging for their art in creative steps Breaking through ceilings is nothing new for 20-year-old choreographer Alexandra Dellaportas.

Aptly in a show based on the British Suffrage movement, her troupe of 28 young dancers will perform Shatter on the giant stage at Bunjil Place.

For the first time, Bunjil's stage pit will be filled by a 35-piece professional orchestra for the show.

Delllaportas formed her non-profit Spark Youth Dance Company out of frustration for the lack of opportunity for young performers on the Mornington Peninsula.

She was just 18 at the time, a year after finishing school.

She decided the best solution was to be the solution. She works with an all-youth creative team of choreographers, directors, lighting, costume and set designers and dancers aged 7-25.

Their goal is to create performances, Dellaportas says.

"We're just here for the love of the artform."

As a "huge feminist", Dellaportas was drawn to teaching her dancers about the Suffragette movement.

Many didn't know that women had to fight for the vote, or what feminism and the fight for gender equality was, Dellaportas said.

She says the Suffragettes' story - full of strength, passion, hunger strikes and violence - was mightily relevant in 2018.

Still, the debate rages for equal pay and for the end of #metoo abuse in entertainment circles, she notes.

"Just teaching the little ones that females don't have to be soft all the time.

"You can have a voice."

By Brendan Rees It’s considered one of the most important aspects of developing a child’s mind.

And a thanks to the help of a charity, more children starting school in Casey will be given a head start in reading.

The Aiding Casey Education (ACE) Foundation led by Cranbourne GP Dr Leon Shapero purchased 3,000 books to make sure every prep student had a reading book.

ACE administrator Teresa Muratore and Dr Shapero visited schools in Casey recently and were surprised to learn many youngsters had never come into contact with a book.

Ms Muratore said the books would now be given to every child who may not have easy access to books; providing them with greater opportunities to kick-start their learning development.

“ACE Foundation can help local students live the life they dream and ensure kids can see and read,” she said.

“We at ACE are extremely proud and we would like to raise awareness and the benefits that each program provides not only to the students but to our community as a whole.”

Since last year, the Foundation has also

provided free eye testing to primary school children and will pay for glasses if they require them.

“The program has been a major success and fortunately ACE Foundation is in a position to extend the reach of this program to all primary schools students at 43 schools,” said Ms Muratore.

In the next coming months ACE Foundation together with Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre will be running ‘Feed Hungry Minds’ Inspiring Hope Campaign.

“It will run for approximately 4 weeks. We will have donation bins placed at community locations where we ask residents in the City of Casey to donate Up and Go meal replacements to be distributed to 12 local Secondary Schools,” Ms Muratore said.

Each month the Foundation delivers 2,500 meal replacement drinks to schools for children who arrive at school without having breakfast or a prepared lunch.

“The feedback we have received from the teachers involved in the program is overwhelmingly and very positive.”

Locations of the bins will be announced in the coming weeks.

"Handrails will be added to Bunjil Place's outdoor footbridges in response to safety concerns.

Bunjil Close Out Projects manager Mark Dibsdale said the handrails for the three bridges crossing the dry-moat have been designed and ordered.

There is at least a one-metre drop from the footbridges into the moat.

The bridges had been deemed compliant by the appointed building surveyor, Mr Dibsdale said.

"However, even though the bridges are compliant, Council has listened to concerns from some members of the community and will be installing new handrails in keeping with the sleek and modern design of Bunjil Place" There had also been complaints about Bunjil's indoor wooden shell structure being a trip hazard as well as difficulties finding the foyer's glass entrances.

Mr Dibsdale said the feet of the wooden shell was barricaded, with further evaluation on signage and wayfinding.

He said an independent access audit had been commissioned to recommend further improvements.

"The associated costs for these recommendations will not be known until the completion of the audit.

"At this time the scope of works will be considered to determine if they are covered by the existing building contract as defects or omissions."

Visitors using the closest bays in the Magid Drive car park are required to cross Patrick North East Drive to reach Bunjil.

Mr Dibsdale said the 22 accessible parking bays were located as close as possible to the entrances of Casey ARC and Bunjil.

An additional two accessible parking bays were set to be installed in the ARC car park.

Mr Dibsdale said works to repair panels that were torn from Bunjil's southern roof section were expected to be completed by the end of March.

Together after 40 lost years

"Every day she would pray and burn a candle. She'd dedicate that to finding me.

"She said she never abandoned me."

In 1975, he had been taken from his home in the jungle hills of East Timor by his father's mistress Amelia.

Amelia looked after him quite well in the capital Dili - apart from the kidnapping, he says.

Joao says as war took hold, it was unsafe for his mother to go look for him. "You go out, you get shot."

As bullets whizzed through the streets, Amelia and his father Carlos Lascasas then tried to flee the island with hundreds of others aboard a refugee ship.

Joao helped carry their bags onto the docks, then was told by Carlos to stay behind, to go back home.

In that moment, Carlos - a police officer was himself ordered to stay to attend an emergency.

Seizing the opportunity, Joao hid on board amongst the desperate crowd. He was repeatedly beaten and scolded by Amelia for his disobedience.

In Darwin, authorities organising the refugees forced her to accept Joao as her 'brother'.

They settled in the town of Tancos in Portugal where they later reunited with Joao's father.

"He went ballistic," Joao said. "He got a big surprise to see me."

Joao was well schooled, took to a partygoing lifestyle and later joined the army as a paratrooper.

In 1995, he settled in Australia seeking better economic prospects with his wife Brigida and children Catia and Helder.

Gaining a permanent visa, he started basic English classes. He worked long hours as a printer, saving enough for a comfortable abode with an array of home gadgets.

Meanwhile, Amelia re-married and settled in Dandenong. She secretly suffered from cancer, her death in 2013 coming as a complete shock to Joao.

He has mixed feelings about his former kidnapper who he says loved him and never mistreated him. He paid for her burial and a plot in Dandenong Cemetery.

Soon after her death, Joao fell ill with anxiety and sweats. His heart was constantly racing. Within months, he was installed with a pacemaker.

"When she died, that's when everything that happened in my life came up. My heart was broken.

"I wanted my mum."

After the video calls with his mother, a happiness rose within.

"It was like a blessing."

In September, Joao will fly back to his homeland and meet his mother. They will do DNA testing for confirmation of their reunion.

He'll bring two photos of his early childhood in East Timor. His mother has no surviving photos of him as a child.

"I've been looking for answers all my life.

"When I'm there I want to know all the stories."

Joao beams at the prospect.

"It's a miracle."

New houses go up in Melbourne’s suburbs all the time, but few people would be aware that the building industry also contributes to helping those who are most in need.

For the past 30 years, the Victorian Homeless Fund (VHF) has aimed to break the homelessness cycle by building houses for some of the most vulnerable in the community, including women and children escaping domestic violence.

“The State Government supplies us with a block of land and we ask a builder, who does volume housing, to take on the build, while suppliers and tradespeople donate all the materials and a considerable amount of labour to help us keep the costs down,” says Chair of the VHF, Colleen May. In the most recent project the organisation partnered with Berwick builder Fairhaven Homes to complete a three-bedroom house in Carrum Downs.

The result Ms May said was outstanding.

“Fairhaven have gone to great lengths to make it not just a house but a home. Normally our houses don’t come furnished but in this case, it came fully furnished and included everything you can think of, from linen and tea towels to crockery and even pegs. They were donated by Guest Furniture. Fairhaven went further and put in a full security system, too.

We couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

As well as having comfortable living spaces, two bathrooms and a garage, the house’s occupants get to enjoy a fantastic, private outdoor area, said Ms May. “Fairhaven delivered a fully landscaped yard with a beautiful, covered outdoor deck, a

Fairhaven’s director Rodney Radings said the builder managed to keep costs down and finished the VHF project with $30,000 left over in the budget.

“So, we were able to donate that back into the project,” Mr Radings said.

“We’ve had great feedback from families, with some saying they feel as if they’ve won the lottery,” added Ms May. “There’s a letter from a mother who said her children couldn’t believe how generous people could be and that as a result one child wanted to be a builder and build houses for other single mums. That’s what makes it really worthwhile.”

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria will host FREEZE!, the gravity-defying show by Dutch performance artist, Nick Steur, from 14 April. FREEZE! promises “edge of your seat’’ fascination, as Nick precariously balances rocks on unbelievable angles; in the peaceful garden locale at both the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria’s Melbourne Garden and Cranbourne Garden. Showcasing the patience and unique skill he developed a child, Nick has created a 50-80 minute stone sculpturing performance. No glue, cement or any other trick is involved.

Take a great short break The Tambo River Tourist Park at Swan Reach is a great place to spend a short break.

The past few months have seen many visitors finding what staff and regulars already know - the area has so much to offer.

Visitors can enjoy scenic drives, visiting the local wineries or fresh fruit farms, cycling the rail trail or taking a bike ride to Metung for coffee.

The bush is beautiful and there are many roads to explore, and the possibility of finding ruins of old quarries, mills or machinery left behind from days gone by is always there.

The river is perfect for kayaks and boats, and fishing is always a popular pastime.

There are plenty of places to enjoy fishing from the bank so a boat is not necessary to hook the best catches.

The past year has seen a great increase in the number of overnight stays in caravans and campers. Tambo River offers powered and unpowered sites. Waste disposal is available at all sites and the usual laundry, camp kitchen and barbecue facilities are on hand.

Alana's Field of dreams

By Hayley Wildes Alana Field will be representing her country at the Junior World Track Championships in Switzerland later this year.

Field, who is a Year 12 student at Berwick's Beaconhills College, was selected to the Australian team after a dominant display at the National Track Cycling Championships in February.

At the meet she won two gold medals and a silver, on her way to being crowned the Under-19 Champion of Champions.

Speaking about the competition - her sixth and final time competing at the Junior National Track Cycling Championships - Field admitted there were plenty of nerves.

"It was very nerve-racking. I just went in with expectations that weren't too high and I met all of them based on my times that I wanted. I was really happy with my results and medals." Field said.

Field, a member of the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club, has been track cycling since she was eight years old and it was because of her sister that she first tried the sport.

"My sister started riding bikes and I got a bit bored of watching her at all the competitions, so I just got on the bike and really enjoyed it."

Field said.

It is clear that cycling runs in the family.

Her sister Courtney was the 2014 Junior World

Sprint Champion and a four-time world silver medallist.

With the Junior World Track Championships being held in August, Field is excited about the opportunity to take on the best cyclists in the world and wear the green and gold.

"It will be really exciting. I've never really competed against many people from overseas, so it will be a new challenge." Field said.

"I look forward to racing and hopefully doing myself and Australia proud. It's a new experience and it kind of opens up my eyes to what my future in cycling could be like."

With almost five months until the championships, Field will be training up to six days a week in preparation and is hoping to set personal best times in Switzerland.

"A medal would be amazing, but I'm not sure about my competitors. I'm just looking forward to getting some PBs if I can - that's probably the main thing I want." Field said.

Field credits some great coaches who have helped her tremendously along the way.

"I've had really good coaches." Field said.

"I had Hilton Clarke coaching me leading up to State Championships and then Glenn Doney from the VIS, he helped me out as my coach leading up to Nationals. They've both been really helpful."

Field will compete in three events; the sprint, keirin and 500m time trial.

Doveton's massive season-opening clash against Cranbourne just got a whole lot bigger after the Doves secured the services of Western Bulldogs star Matthew Boyd.

In one of the biggest recruiting coups in local football, the three-time All-Australian and member of the Bulldogs' drought-breaking premiership team of 2016 will play several games for the Doves this season.

Boyd, now a development coach with Collingwood, will work his playing schedule around his coaching commitments with the Magpies.

He will make his debut in a blockbuster Good Friday clash against the Eagles at the Doves home ground at Robinson Oval.

The 35-year-old Boyd, who retired last year after a magnificent 292-game career, said it was funny how the cards had fallen - leading to his signing with the Doves.

"There is a small connection there, I went to primary school with Aaron (Doveton President Aaron Henwood) but apart from that it just came through to talking to a mate from my daughter's school," Boyd said.

"I had a couple of conversations with Aaron and it just went from there, basically I've been getting itchy feet and the offer from Doveton came at the perfect time."

Despite being one of the most decorated, well-respected and hard-nosed figures during his 16 years in the AFL, Boyd said he was surprisingly nervous about entering his new surroundings.

"It already feels like I'm out of my comfort zone, being with the one club for so long you become used to that environment and this will be a new and exciting challenge," he said.

"Obviously we have a pretty young group at Doveton, so if I can pass on some of my experience and then learn something back from the playing group it should work out pretty well in the end.

"Now that it's done I'm really looking forward to it. I'm a competitive beast and nothing ever fills that void of not playing football."

Boyd's journey to the big time has been well documented.

The State Championship Men recorded their first win of the season with a strong performance against Knox, running out 86-76 winners.

Raheem Lemons (20 points, 4 rebounds), Matt Donlan (20 points) and Ben Louis (17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists) led the way for the Cavs.

Warrnambool's Amy Wormald (30 points, 16 rebounds) was damaging all night as Casey struggled to find an answer for her on both ends of the court.

Youth League 1 Men made it two from two to kick off their season, with an impressive 8368 win over the Bendigo Braves.

Hunter Marks (24 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) was at his best and his composure at the free-throw line (12/13 FT) shone through all night.

A 19-9 third quarter was the difference as the Cavs stamped their authority on the contest and never relinquished the lead.

Casey's Youth League 2 Women put together a ruthless performance against the Sherbrooke Suns on Saturday night.

Doveton president Henwood admitted it was still a bit surreal to have the three-time best and fairest winner on the books.

"I'm a bit speechless and a little bit excited at the moment, it's not every day that you have a player with the credentials of Matthew Boyd join your club," Henwood said.

"It's absolutely brilliant for the club.

"We've made no secret of the fact that we're going into this season with a young list, and what better way to fast-track their development with one of the most well-respected figures in the game.

"And it's not just what he has done on the footy field, he is a quality person who is going to be a tremendous asset to not only Doveton but the league."

Boyd, married with three children, said he was looking forward to sharing his new journey with his family.

"I used to love going to the local footy with my dad - you remember those days - and it was a big motivating factor to get the family away from that professional environment and get them involved a bit more.

"As I said, I can't wait to get in amongst it."

By Nick Creely FFV SOCCER WRAP ROUND 1 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST It was the perfect start and a terrific launching pad for the season, with Casey Comets dismantling Malvern City 3-0 on Friday night in front of a healthy home crowd.

The Comets got off to a tailor made start, with two goals in the opening 15 minutes from Dejan Radojicic and John Prescott setting the game up and immediately putting City under the pump.

Not content with their 2-0 half time lead, the Comets found a late score in the 79th minute through Connor Belger, to send the crowd into raptures and on top of the table after one round.

In other matches to start the season, Richmond SC defeated Beaumaris 3-1, Warragul United accounted for St Kilda SC 2-1, Mornington fell 0-1 at home to Manningham United, Eltham stood firm to register a 2-1 win over Springvale South, and Morwell drew 3-3 with Caulfield United at Ronald Reserve.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST It's the local derby that everyone waits for, with Doveton SC hosting Berwick City at Waratah Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides enjoyed strong 2017 seasons, and were desperate to get their 2018 campaign off on the right foot.

It was a tight, tense opening half, with Simon Mur finding the back of the net right on the stroke of half time to give the Doves a 1-0 lead.

And that goal proved crucial in the momentum of the match, with the Doves scoring in the 65th minute to essentially ice the game, not allowing City to stage a comeback despite a late goal to Chris L'Enclume in the 80th minute that softened the defeat slightly.

The men from IYU Recreation Reserve got their season off to a strong start, knocking off Endeavour Hills Fire SC 2-0 on Friday night.

The United; who were an extremely competitive, exciting unit in 2017; capitalized on a strong start to cruise to victory over the Fire.

A classic Patto masterclass clinches it

By Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET SEMI FINAL REVIEW Carlton must have nightmares every time Darren Pattinson lets the ball fly down the pitch.

Back on 21 January, the 38-year old veteran bamboozled the Blues, taking 4/12 in the one day final to dismantle the home side for just 49, in one of the great term performances in the competition's illustrious history.

And he's done it again in yet another massive match for the club that sees them qualify for this weekend's grand final against FitzroyDoncaster.

Pattinson this time snared an incredible 6/13, including the first six scalps, as the Blues meekly rolled over for just 54 after play resumed late in the day after rain poured at Princes Park in the morning.

And the rain worked wonders for the brilliant Panthers champ, who completely took the game away with him extraordinary ability to move the ball and intimidate the opposition.

His first victim was opener Brayden Stepien, and not long after Stepien had even taken off his pads in the change room, Harry and Tom Smyth, Mackenzie Harvey and Donovan Pell joined him, all victims to Pattinson stunning opening spell.

And the big wicket, that of skipper Evan Gulbis, who plundered 464 runs for the season, was the defining moment for the Panthers not long after, resigning the home side to 6/26 with all its top line players back in the shed.

The wicket of Gulbis meant Pattinson sits on 31 wickets from 15 matches in his comeback season, his best return since the 2006/07 season.

Unbelievably consistent all-rounder James Nanopoulos (4/15) finished it off with no fuss, to condemn the Blues to embarrassment for the second consecutive time this season.

Worryingly for the Blues, they have lost 20/103 in their last two outings, with Pattinson contributing 10 of those scalps.

Phillips sticks with the Lions Narre South president Nathan Tracy has put the rumours to bed - Scott Phillips is going nowhere next cricket season.

Tracy; who also announced he will be stepping down as president of the club; confirmed that the legendary local cricketers has put pen to paper for the next two seasons, as the Lions' captain-coach in DDCA Turf 2.

With rumours circulating that Phillips could be headed to a Turf 1 club after scoring 1315 runs at 57.17 and taking 93 wickets at 10.06 in his first two years at Strathaird Reserve after an extraordinary career in the MPCA, Tracy said the chatter was simply wrong, and quite "funny".

"We understand that everyone will chat when you have someone like Scott; I know Mordialloc had a chat with him, and the rumours are bandied around everywhere, and I got contacted him quickly and he knew nothing about it and wanted to re-sign that day," he said.

"He never considered moving, when I contacted him, he told me there was no fact to the rumours; it was all over the shop, everyone was talking about it, and it's just garbage to be honest."

Despite figures being thrown around about how much Phillips' contract is worth, and with suggestion that he is 'breaking the bank' at the club, Tracy said his star player is actually taking less for his actual worth, all to make the club become a powerhouse in the DDCA. "It's totally wrong; you hear figures, and he's taking less money for the next two years than what he has the previous; he just wants to be at our club, and loves the culture, and he feels like we're close to being successful enough to jump into Turf 1," he said.

"Scott's results speak for themselves; he only bowled half the year, and was probably the best in the comp, and he scored 615 runs, he's that professional player everyone wants; a lot of clubs have showed interest in him, and we're very happy to have him.

"When Scott plays, he brings others up with him, so it's not about the dollar; he could have gone to a lot of clubs for a lot more money, but he didn't."

Tracy said despite Phillips being 39 years old, there's no reason why he can't keep dominating.

"I don't see why he can't continue doing what he does, considering he's playing against the same kinds of players he's played against the last couple of years," he said.

The Lions are reportedly in the frame to land some other quality players from rival clubs, as they gear up for a tilt at a Turf 2 premiership in 2018/19.

"Darren (Pattinson) was just brilliant; he did exactly what we probably expected he could do, it was incredible," Donnell said of the champ.

"Those moments are why he came back; he probably finds it surprising how well he's gone, but at the end of the day, he's put in all the work and he got the rewards for it.

"With the rain, the conditions and the pitch probably suited him to a tee, and he did the job for us."

As the Panthers gear up for what will be incredible grand final showdown at Junction Oval this Easter weekend, Donnell; gearing up for his fourth Victorian Premier Cricket grand final; explained that the feeling is pure excitement, all with last year's hurt ingrained

in their minds.

"It's just exciting for the group; I honestly didn't expect it, I wasn't sure how we'd go this year, but the boys have just been unreal," he said.

"Everyone at this club has bounced back from last year, we have learnt a lot along the way.

"We do take a bit of confidence out of the game, but they (Fitzroy-Doncaster) are the benchmark, they know what it takes to win.

"We'll hopefully get the job done, and make the club proud."

Donnell hinted that the Panthers will go into the clash unchanged.

Dandenong and Fitzroy-Doncaster will play off for the premiership on Saturday 31 March, Sunday 1 April and Monday 2 April at Junction Oval.

The Saturday Pennant Final outfit from Berwick.

Brilliant Berwick Bowls BERWICK BOWLS At season's end, Berwick Bowling Club has achieved some fantastic Pennant results with a side from each of Midweek and Saturday pennant winning their respective sections and gaining promotion. Now, for the first time, Berwick will have two sides in Division One for Saturday pennant.

This is a unique situation that very few clubs can boast. Having two Division 1 sides in either format, and with 14 sides representing the club across all Divisions in Midweek and

Saturday pennant, Berwick is clearly a strong club with great commitment and depth.

The Saturday Side 2, playing in Division 2, won the final of its section and is now promoted to Division 1 moving forward. This is a great result shared by the many members who attended and gave huge and much appreciated support to the side. They progressed to the final by winning the sectional semi-final by just one shot, defeating the top side, and in another cliff-hanger they won the sectional final by just two shots (78-76):

Oswald, Anderson, Graeber, and Fothergill (s) lost 14-28.

Cairncross, P. Cairncross, Janetzki, and Clarke (s) won 25-13.

T. Cantwell, Walker, Rich, and Tormey (s) won 25-14.

Garner, Down, Bunnell, and Azzopardi (s) lost 14-21.

The Midweek Side 3, playing in Open Division 3, won its section and is now promoted to Division 1. This was another great result for Berwick, coming out clear winners with

a score of 71-46 and with huge support from club members on hand to cheer them on.

Ellis, P. Steere, Harlow, and Wastell (s) won 32-15.

A. Steere, Gage, Smythe, and Tormey (s) won 20-14.

Turner, Epshtein, D. Fisher, and Azzopardi (s) won 19-1.

Berwick had a tremendous season overall, with six sides playing finals and supported by very enthusiastic crowds of club members.

Sensational Cranbourne snares the premiership flag Narre Warren's Division 5 team after their Division Grand Final.

All good things must end NARRE WARREN BOWLS After a sensational season when Narre Warren's Division 5 team topped the ladder after the home and away rounds, they won promotion on the first day of finals, and won the section pennant the following day.

They followed up the next weekend to win

their divisional quarter final game on Saturday, and their division semi-final on the Sunday.

But on the last day of finals, it went wrong.

On a day which may not have produced any bowls, due to heavy morning rain, the green had puddles at the start of the game, delaying it for a couple of hours. By the end of the day two Narre Warren rinks had close wins, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, Peter Lister and Norm Hosmer won 20-15, and Colin Groom, Keith Mark, Graham Dodd and Geoff Miller made a good comeback to win 16-14. The teams of Mark Groom, Zade Bulmer, Philip Howard and Craig Moore, along with Jos van Hout, Alan Mark, David Wilkinson and Ralph Devonshire both failed to produce their best on the day and went down.

Narre Warren 62 lost to Palm Lake 74.

CRANBOURNE BOWLS Tuesday was a historic day for Cranbourne Bowls Club, with the women's side defeating Lalor by 12 shots to become Division 1 champions. The ladies now have won the silverware, in addition to their premiership medallions.

Lalor put up a good fight and the game was played in good spirits but only one team could win and Cranbourne was determined to win this one with the final score after a tight struggle in the Bowls Victoria Pennant Division 1 ladies sectional grand-final: - Cranbourne 65 defeating Lalor 53.

This means that next bowling season, the Cranbourne ladies will progress to play at the highest level in the state by joining the Premier League. This will no doubt bring a lot of excitement to the club and the whole Casey and Peninsula region.

After the game the ladies celebrated back at

the club and proudly showed off their winning medallions and the huge Division 1 premiership flag that now hangs proudly on the clubroom wall.

Advancing to Premier League next year will involve travelling to clubs all over metropolitan Melbourne and the club will be looking for extra support from its existing sponsors and potential new sponsors to get behind the club.

The club is also expecting plenty of interest from potential new players, particularly from the surrounding Casey and Peninsula areas who want to play at an elite level of bowls.
