Hundreds of names parked on petition Liberal candidate for Monbulk, John Schurink, and Member for Eastern Victoria region, Edward O'Donohue, met with Michael Alexander and Glenn Chandler from the Belgrave Traders Association to discuss the burgeoning parking problems in Belgrave. A petition, started by Mr Schurink, has called on the Labor Government to address the issue and has attracted over 600 signatures. Fears after theft Five shop break-ins over the past two years have left a Monbulk business-owner feeling vulnerable and frustrated.

Alpine Mowers suffered its latest hit during the early hours of Tuesday 20 March, just weeks after would-be thieves made an earlier attempt at entering the premises.

In the recent heist, the thieves were thought to have used a stolen utility to ram and gain access to the shop before making off with an estimated $10,000 worth of valuable stock.

Shop owner Adam Robin said he now fears

venturing too far from the premises for any length of time, with his shop becoming a frequent target in recent years.

"I went away one weekend and you're always kind of worrying, you know. You don't know what you're going to come back to," Mr Robin said.

"You always kind of feel vulnerable. They're too gutless to do it during the day, when police can come in five minutes. But at night, it seems they can just come in and do as they please."

The thieves' actions were captured on a CCTV system that Mr Robin has installed, including both the attempted burglary on Friday

"I just don't think enough is being done to help small business."

Mr Robin said the spate of thefts over recent years had left him feeling on edge, because he didn't know when the next break-in would occur.

He feels there could be more in the future and he would like more to be done, so he can feel that his shop and livelihood will be safe.

NEWS IN BRIEF Kinder IT boosts are available Monbulk MP James Merlino is encouraging local kindergartens that need minor infrastructure improvements to boost their IT capabilities and apply for funding.

Applications for the 2018-19 Children's Facilities Capital Program Minor Grants round are now open with funding available through three grants categories.

Applicants - such as local government and not-for-profit service providers - are encouraged to apply for minor infrastructure expansion grants of up to $25,000 that will increase the usable space of a licenced service.

On offer includes minor infrastructure refurbishment grants (up to $10,000) and IT grants (up to $1500).

Pilot lucky in crash A pilot has made a narrow escape after his light plane over-shot the runway at Lilydale Airport in Yering on Saturday 24 March.

The privately owned Cessna aircraft landed long on the runway before crashing into an embankment, with the pilot, 63, emerging uninjured from the crash.

The plane partially blocked MacIntyre Lane at Yering, with the road closed for some time while a crane was used to transport the aircraft to a nearby hangar.

Yarra Glen and Coldstream CFA brigades were among the first on the scene, with fuel leaking from the right-hand wing of the plane.

Police and paramedics also attended.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate the accident.

A collaboration between EPIC Project, Foothills Community Care Community Casseroles program and local Belgrave Heights cafe Wild Wood Kitchen will see fresh produce brought from the paddock to the plate for those in need.

The trio of groups have teamed up to help provide fresh produce to all who need it in the Dandenong Ranges.

A mix of vegetables are plucked straight from EPIC's garden, situated at the rear of the George Tindale Memorial Garden in Sherbrooke.

The produce is then brought to Chris Wilding, owner at Wild Woods Kitchen who then creates a delicious meal that is donated to the Community Casserole program.

Cheryle Foster, a Volunteer at EPIC Project said the collaboration was about providing a fair share of food for all, especially for those who need it.

"The ethics of permaculture on which we are based, is care of the earth, care of the peo-

ple and a fair share for all," Ms Foster said.

"This is our opportunity to both care for people but also fair share, so we're sharing the goods that are coming out of the garden and because it's a voluntary based garden, it's not for any one individual ... it's a garden where the produce goes to the community particularly those in need."

"These are opportunities where we can get that level of fresh food out to people in the community who might not necessarily have the opportunity of getting it anywhere else."

EPIC is a voluntary organisation with all food being shared within the community to those in need.

The collaboration is in its infancy though EPIC has already delivered two loads of vegetables.

The first delivery was a large bundle of Zucchinis, which Chris said were perfect for a Persian zucchini soup.

"We had a big amount of zucchinis which we made a Persian zucchini soup with and we portioned that out to Community Casseroles,"

Mr Wilding said.

"That works really well for them because they know its local product and we can keep it vegan and make sure it gets past all those major food intolerances."

Community Casseroles run regular community cook ups in the Dandenong Ranges and cook and freeze meals to share with those in our community who have had sudden changes in their lives and could do with a little kindness in the form of a home cooked meal.

A home cooked meal is exactly what those individuals are getting, with a nutritious, organic, home cooked meal provided by EPIC and Mr Wilding.

Stephen Barrington CEO of the Foothills Community Care group who run the Community Casseroles program said that the need for fresh produce was always increasing.

"For us it is about providing nutritious meals for people ... a lot of people particularly those who are isolated and disconnected don't have access to fresh food and vegetables, so having this is great."

‘Legs-out’ petition

By Peter Douglas Almost 17,000 people have signed a petition to ensure Puffing Billy passengers enjoy the freedom to dangle their legs outside of the icon's carriages.

After a rare accident, on Tuesday 6 March, in which a minibus and the locomotive collided in Menzies Creek, Puffing Billy Railway management announced a temporary ban on the 50-plus years practice, pending an internal review of the incident.

Between 150 to 200 patrons were aboard Puffing Billy when the collision occurred, with one person taken to hospital and four treated at the scene.

Puffing Billy Railway chief executive officer, John Robinson, announced the measure on the same day as the incident.

However, the Change.org petition creator, Shayne Wright, said many fear the ban will become permanent.

Mr Wright said there needs to be "common sense" applied. " ... the public are now banned from a plus 50-year tourist tradition of hanging legs out of the slow-moving, scenic train as it puffs through picturesque forests at little more than a jogging pace," Mr Wright said.

"Sign this petition as a shout-out for common sense and allow the tradition to continue."

Many locals agreed with the sentiment when the 'Mail' initially reported on the temporary change.

"This is a typical knee-jerk overreaction.

Puffing Billy has an excellent track record, I hope they don't ban this tradition indefinitely because of one fool of a driver," posted one commenter.

"Part of the attraction is being able to dangle your feet," said another.

Community facility open The Victorian Government has helped to deliver a new sports and recreation hub for Upwey-Tecoma.

Minister for Local Government, Marlene Kairouz, joined Monbuk MP James Merlino to open the Upwey Tecoma Recreational Sporting Hub (UTCRASH), which was funded with $1.5 million from the Labor Government.

The UTCRASH is a modern recreation and sporting facility that will boost the development of sport and serve as a hub for community meetings and social gatherings.

It is expected to be used by more than 1150 school students and staff, as well as 23 community groups that have more than 2500 members.

Mr Merlino said the project is a huge win for the community.

"We promised we would deliver this facility and now it's ready for everyone to enjoy," he said.

"The UTCRASH will be a fantastic hub for everything from the chess club to tae-kwon-do."

A grant of $1 million from Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF) was provided towards the UTCRASH, as well as $500,000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria.

Yarra Ranges Council contributed $1.1 million to the development of the site.

The project was also made possible thanks to $500,000 from the Federal Government's Community Development Grants Programme, $250,000 from The Bendigo Community Bank and $250,000 from the community.

The UTCRASH is one of many local projects delivered by the GSF, including the Belgrave Community Hub, Lilydale Lake Playground Upgrade, Kimberley Reserve Active Living Hub, Belgrave South Community Sports Pavilion and the Eastern Ranges Regional Facilities Upgrade.

The GSF targets high priority projects that improve the liveability of communities in Victoria's 10 interface councils on Melbourne's fringe.

Ms Kairouz said the community deserved this facility.

"We know how important this facility is for the Upwey Tecoma community - that's why we backed it with funding," she said."Sport and recreation centres keep local communities thriving and this is the kind of project we're going to continue delivering for Victorians."

Youth drinks in spotlight Yarra Ranges will roll out an alcohol supply monitoring program to help curb underage drinking and encourage better health and wellbeing for young people.

The Communities that Care program involves getting young people aged 18-22 who look underage attempting to purchase alcohol from bottleshops without a valid ID. Program coordinator at EACH, Deborah Cocks, said research showed that in a sample of bottle shops in the Yarra Ranges, only 40 per cent asked young people for ID. "We want managers of alcohol outlets to be very clear in their feedback to staff," Ms Cocks said.

"We encourage licensees and managers to discuss with their staff the fact that, when you sell alcohol to teenagers, you're failing in your job.

"As part of this program, letters go to all licensees and managers, either congratulating them for not selling alcohol to a young person without ID, or reminding them of the law and best practice in the service of alcohol."

The program has been implemented in Knox through Communities that Care Knox, auspiced by EACH, and will be rolled out to the Yarra Ranges through 2018.

Research shows that young people are more likely to develop social, cognitive and emotional issues if they use alcohol before turning 18. The younger this drinking starts, the more likely they are to have impaired brain development and alcohol problems later in life.

Yarra Ranges Council Mayor, Cr Len Cox, said it was important that families and friends lend a hand to discourage underage drinking.

"The research clearly shows that underage drinking simply isn't safe and can lead to negative consequences down the track," Cr Cox said.

"Drinking alcohol is ingrained in Australian culture, events and advertising, but it's important that we build a healthy attitude towards drinking."

Australian Government research from 2014 showed that about 68 per cent of teenagers between the ages of 12-17 reported drinking alcohol. When asked how they sourced the alcohol, 80 per cent reported getting it from three sources - their parents or home, friends and acquaintances or by purchasing it themselves.

"To reinforce the messages of program, we encourage parents to discuss alcohol use with their children and really support them by setting clear rules and guidelines about not drinking alcohol until they are 18 years old," Ms Cocks said.

"Parents sometimes fear that if they don't allow drinking at home, their children may then use alcohol behind their backs, but research shows that families with rules about not using alcohol results in lower rates of underage drinking.

"In contrast, in families where parents allow moderate drinking, children are more likely to rebel and partake in more heavy and harmful alcohol use.

This year, the Country Women's Association of Victoria marked 90 years of existence.

They were formed 12 March 1928 out of concern for women living in isolation.

It has a strong membership base, currently compromising 5600 women from both country and city areas.

To celebrate the 90 year milestone the CWA and Yarra Valley Craft Group held a craft exhibition at the beautiful Warratina Lavender Farm.

Caught up in report

By Peter Douglas Dandenong Ranges' representatives and MPs Shaun Leane and James Merlino have been embroiled in an ombudsman's report into claims of misuse of taxpayer funds.

Ombudsman Deborah Glass on Wednesday 21 March released the lengthy investigation into claims electorate officers for Labor MPs, who the Parliament employ, were diverted to campaign for the Labor Party before the 2014 state election.

In total, the report stated almost $388,000 in taxpayer funds had been used while deploying full-time field organisers in the lead-up to the election.

Monbulk MP James Merlino, and Member for Eastern Metropolitan Region Shaun Leane, both came under heavy fire from local Liberal Party members.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin and Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Edward O'Donohue, were among those to speak out after the report's release.

Mr Battin likened the report's outcome to theft.

"If any person in Victoria got caught stealing money from their employer, they would be sacked. It's a shame that Daniel Andrews does not hold his government to the same standard," Mr Battin said.

Mr O'Donohue expressed the same sentiment.

"If Victorian workers are found to have rorted from their employers, they would be forced to pay back the money and resign," he said.

"Why should it be any different for James Merlino?"

Opposition attorney-general, John Pesutto, said James Merlino must apologise for the $21,148 his office used to fund the 2014 election campaign.

In response, Mr Merlino told the Mail : The Victorian Ombudsman has tabled her report into matters concerning the 2014 election campaign, he said.

She makes no recommendations that action be taken against anyone involved in these arrangements.

Mr Merlino said the Government accepts the Ombudsman s view that there are competing interpretations of the relationship between Section 30 of the Parliamentary Administration Act 2005 and the Members Guide, and that any confusion should be resolved swiftly.

In the interests of public confidence, the Premier requested that the State Secretary of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Labor Party

reimburse, in full, funds expended through the staff pooling arrangements, he said.

The Ombudsman recommends that the Parliament consider giving greater clarity to the role of electorate office staff and improve transparency around the expenditure of MP allowances.

The Government is already taking a number of steps to make the Parliamentary allowance system for MPs more transparent and accountable something the previous Liberal Government refused to do.

We support all of the Ombudsman s recommendations and will ensure the Parliament is provided with all the support required to implement them.

Drain of pain

By Peter Douglas Cardinia Shire Council has announced the enactment of a temporary traffic management plan at Emerald Lake Park.

Recently, council has sought to address issues with the functioning of the overflow drain at the popular destination, which it's feared could be impacting the main access road to the Puffing Billy Station car park.

To safeguard the condition of the road, and to ensure safety of the road-users and visitors to the area, council said they have taken immediate action.

They are planning on liaising with stakeholders and erecting appropriate signage on the site.

In addition, the water level of Emerald Lake Park will be lowered over the weekend to reduce risk to the infrastructure, and we are currently working closely with stakeholders to determine suitable workarounds for car parking and facility access in the immediate term.

Although access to the lower car park will be unaffected, the access road to the station car park has been temporarily closed to traffic, with detours in place.

Puffing Billy will be operating as normal; however, parking capacity will be reduced due to the temporary closure of the station car park.

Council will be obtaining specialist assistance to investigate the extent of the issue and will continue to communicate with the local community and stakeholders as the issue progresses.

A group of La Trobe residents had a sit in outside Jason Wood's Berwick office on Thursday (March 8) to express their concerns about the proposed Adani coal mine.

They think there are many reasons why this mine should not proceed.

Firstly, being the biggest coal mine in the Southern hemisphere it will make global warming worse.

It will also exacerbate the global warming related problems afflicting the Great Barrier Reef and put at risk many tourism jobs in coastal North Queensland.

The farmland surrounding the mine will also be affected due to the mines unlimited access to ground water.

The huge mine will also irreparably damage the land of the traditional owners.

All up, the risks far outweigh any benefits including the 1500 promised jobs.

If the public money to be invested on rail access to the mine were instead invested in renewable energy that would create as many if not more jobs.

Our message for Jason Wood and the government is don't gamble with our future by doing things which we know will definitely make global warming worse.

Secondly, this mine should not be funded in any way including by the governments Export Finance & Insurance Corporation or EFIC. Peter Cook, Clematis

fras and often wander up to town in the early evening and I am constantly stunned there is never anything open.

The mountain has wonderful bed and breakfasts available for these tourists but there is a massive shortage of things and places for them to go in the evenings.

I could think of nothing better than being in the magnificent hills, wandering up to have an early dinner in Sassafras and then continuing on to see a show or exhibition nearby.

We have a large circle of friends who are all performers that would love the opportunity of using a space like the Hive.

There could even be monthly community indoor markets and fundraisers run at the centre.

To me, the space would provide so many opportunities to attract business to the area.

It is ideal and definitely a space I would utilise in business. It is simply so exciting.

Hive of activity a certainty My family and I are thrilled to read of the Forest Hive Art Centre proposal.

It sounds 'so' incredibly exciting and a project that is desperately needed for both the community and the school kids!

We moved from living in Collingwood about eight months ago.

We now have three sisters living on the mountain, including my family based in Sassafras.

Mountain life is inspiring and so relaxing.

FOCUS ON … PAVE FESTIVAL 2018

It’s the fest with the best This year's theme for Emerald's Performing and Visual Arts Festival (PAVE) is inspired by the ABC series War on Waste.

Participating artists and performers from all arts genres have been encouraged to consider how the phrase 'rejuvenate, rediscover and rethink' might relate to their respective artistic endeavours.

Artists participating in PAVE 2018 have been inspired to create innovative clothing, music and utility objects by rejuvenating and re-purposing ideas and material.

Families can also create a scarecrow from recycled materials at the library, enjoy an up-cycled fashion expo, or browse craft-stall wares on Funfest day.

The theme also extends into the perennial PAVE dance workshops/performance pieces, and more generally relates to the history and lives of icons of stage, screen and stereo.

The PAVE 2018 cover artwork was commissioned to reflect the festival's theme. Local artist Martha Silver Breninger of Healing Spirit Creations is recognised for her distinctive two dimensional-works, as well as her enchanting felted creations, and has done an exceptional job creating the artwork.

To wrap up FunFest day on Sunday 8 April, a short opening ceremony at Emerald Community House Hall will take place from 6pm.

Complimentary wine and cheese will be available to enjoy as well as entertaining snippets from contributing PAVE artists.

So take time-out to leaf through the comprehensive program and discover what PAVE has on offer over eight exciting days around Emerald.

Treasure to eggs-cite

By Peter Douglas Emerald Lake Park will again hold its annual Easter treasure hunt on Sunday 1 April, with many eager children expected to take up the challenge.

The park's free treasure hunt is held between 11am and 3pm, with participants encouraged to pick up an activity sheet, which is available on the day from the cafe, the model railway, the Lakeside Station or the Environment Centre.

The activity sheet will set a series of challenges, which will invite the 'explorers' to discover some of the special attractions and activities of the park.

Children of all ages, big and small, can hop to it and hung for eggs; while parents might even like to pack a little picnic and enjoy a family day out.

Who knows, you may even catch a special glimpse of a local icon, Puffing Billy.

The long weekend may also be a great time to discover, or re-discover, all the great items and fun activities available to the willing.

Among these include paddle boat rides, model railway display, caf¨¦, free barbecue facilities, walking tracks and a seasonal wading pool.

Meanwhile, the Environment Centre offers a live aquatic display, information of flora and fauna, and information on the park.

The Dancer is a masterful portrait of artistic passion and obsession stuck inside a loose, scattershot plot, and was screened by the Yarra Ranges Film Society at the Healesville Memorial Hall on March 20.

French actor and singer Soko has a magnetic screen presence as groundbreaking American dancer Loie Fuller, and it's deeply engrossing to watch this dedicated woman realise her performing dreams through maverick creativity and sheer force of will.

Director St¨¦phanie Di Giusto directs Loie's majestic, unearthly dances almost like action sequences, with dynamic movements, dramatic music and intense, raw emotion.

Unfortunately, the compelling visuals and powerful central performance are offset by a

scattershot narrative and some questionable stylistic choices.

While The Dancer generates plenty of obstacles for Loie to overcome, including cynical financial backers, intense jealousy and the severe strain her dancing inflicts upon her body, the film conveys a very vague sense of time.

It's impossible to tell whether the film's events took place across months or years, especially with the abrupt editing, and this saps Loie's exploits of tension.

Loie's turbulent relationship with younger dancer Isadora Duncan (Lily-Rose Depp) does further the film's theme of control, but otherwise this sub-plot doesn't go anywhere.

The Dancer has outstanding character insight and mesmerising visuals within a clunky, poorly-paced narrative The Yarra Ranges Film Society screens an acclaimed arthouse or foreign film every month at the Warburton and Healesville cinemas.

It’s Mounters’ shield

By Chris Anderson Although rain nearly made a mockery of the Yarra Valley Cricket Association, skies opened enough on Saturday to ensure there was enough play to create some exciting cricket on Sunday 25 March.

When the dust settled on a hectic weekend of cricket, it was Mount Evelyn and Woori Yallock which emerged as the toast of the town as they respectively lifted the DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy.

In the competition's top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the grand final saw a match-up between the competition's best two teams.

Split by only run rate at the end of the home and away season, Warburton-Millgrove and Mount Evelyn seemed destined to reach the final game, a rematch of last season's finale.

After biding their time for much of Saturday afternoon, the weather broke, conditions improved, and a start was reached at 4.30pm, two hours to get a healthy amount of cricket played.

The toss was almost irrelevant as the Burras, being the highest placed team, were keen for a bat to control the tempo of the game, while Mount Evelyn were forced to make the running, and bowling their opponents became imperative for a chance at forcing a victory.

Veteran Chris Anderson found some early fortune with the wicket of David Lever caught at fine leg after a powerful pull shot.

Sean Humphrey and Liam Barnard were the mainstays, and platform providers, the last time these two teams met, and it was looking as though both were setting themselves for a similar effort.

A change of bowlers did the trick for Mount Evelyn as their captain, Kane Jones, was able to induce an edge from Barnard to snuff out the partnership at 2/41.

Ben Lever, the hero of the Burras' semi-final win, joined Humphrey at the wicket, and soon re-engaged in the engrossing battle between bat and ball.

Both continued to bat patiently, capitalising on the rare bad ball provided.

Inch by inch they pushed the score onwards, while taking away valuable time from their opponents.

With the day seemingly progressing towards safe ground for the Burras, Jones played his trump card, proven wicket taker, Chad Witherdin.

In his first over, Witherdin was able to produce a brace of wickets that removed the stubborn Humphrey for 35, followed by the captain Daniel Lever.

From 2/73, the score soon became 5/78 as Jones was also able to remove Noah Andueza before the day was out.

With conditions more favourable on Sunday, the 35 overs remaining, a lot rested on

how the remaining Burras' bats would approach the remainder of the innings.

A lot rested on the experience and strokeplay of the likes of Ben Lever, Tim McKail, Carl Morgan and Adam Humphrey.

Witherdin removed Lever with a direct hit from backward square leg and things looked up for the Mounters.

Witherdin and Kane Jones continued from where they left off on the Saturday, and, despite having to bowl nearly 20 overs, they were able to remove the final four batsman with some excellent bowling.

Witherdin finished with 4/11, while Jones captured 4/35 as they restricted WarburtonMillgrove to 103.

By taking time and overs out of the equation, it was just about passing the score for the Mounters.

The Giblin father-and-son duo, Daniel and Andrew, gave the chase a great footing as they navigated their team to tea.

Regular wickets seemed to plague the chase, with spinners Daniel Lever (3/36) and Adam Humphrey (2/13) seemingly keeping their team in it; however, 103 wasn't enough, and the Mounters, led by Kane Jones (41 not out) got the job done with four wickets in hand.

Rangers grab first-up win A bumper crowd turned out to the Monbulk Regional Soccer Facility to see the season opener between Monbulk Rangers and Skye United, with both teams vying for promotion in the 2018 Men's State League 3 South East.

Frantic action in the first half saw Monbulk scoreless at half-time, but two second-half goals - from Arash Sadeghi and Geordie Scott saw the home side run away with a 2-1 victory.

The team continued their form from the end of 2017, extending their unbeaten run to nine in a row, and will travel to play Brighton away in their next fixture.

The Monbulk Reserves were not so lucky, losing 2-0 to Skye.

The club's newest Football Federation Victoria (FFV) team, the U12 Raptors, enthusiastically escorted the seniors onto the pitch.

Monbulk Rangers is a rarity in having both senior and junior teams in its 600-strong player membership.

Junior coordinator Ewa Wallis says the aim is to have a clear pathway from junior to senior ranks to give players continuity and strengthen the club.

"If young players can aspire to come up through the ranks and play in the Monbulk Rangers' senior men's and women's teams, in games like we saw tonight, the future of the club will be assured," she said.

"In turn, we encourage the seniors to attend training sessions to assist with skills and tips for the juniors."

Monbulk Rangers juniors have also been invited to halftime action at AAMI Stadium between A-League games, through the club's affiliation with both Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City.

Knights celebrate again

And this season's Reeves Shield final was no exception as Knoxfield batsmen Tom Boxell and Jack Taylor struck centuries to close out The Basin, giving the Knights their third premiership in a row.

The Basin bowlers had no answer to Boxell (100) or Taylor (127), as the pair added 148 for the fifth wicket and ultimately an unbeatable total of 8/356 at the close of day one.

Taylor showed why he was selected in the Victorian Country team as his innings consisted of only 84 balls with 11 boundaries and 9 sixes.

The Basin's run chase at one point was on track at 3/150.

However, once leading run-maker Scott Vozzo departed for 82, the Bears' dream of their first premiership was over, dismissed for 267 in the 73rd over.

Josh Lindner took three wickets, following up on his six-wicket haul in the preliminary final while Taylor was awarded the Stephen Lee Medal for best afield.

In one of the great grand finals, Footballers claimed the Decoite Shield after holding out a gallant Lysterfield in dramatic scenes on the last ball of the day.

On day one, Footballers elected to bat and a boil-over seemed likely when they stumbled to 5/66 before Tharanga Lakshita and Radhik Gooneratne pushed the score to 160 when Lakshita fell first ball after drinks for 60.

Building blocks of an icon The full-size Lego replica of the all-new Toyota Camry debuts tomorrow at the Brickman Awesome exhibition in Melbourne.

Comprising more than 500,000 Lego bricks, the Toyota Camry replica weighs two tonnes, an astonishing 0.4 tonnes more than the working car.

The replica features signature details of the Toyota Camry, such as Toyota logos on the alloy wheels, hybrid lettering, working headlights, indicators and brake lights.

"We're so excited to introduce the all-new Toyota Camry in a fun and interactive environment to Melbournians," said Toyota Australia chief designer Nicholas Hogios.

"It's amazing to see how quickly the car was put together in such a streamlined approach - much like our own design process locally in Australia.

The Lego Camry was designed by Ryan 'The Brickman' McNaught, the only Lego certified professional in the southern hemisphere and one of only 14 in the world.

Ryan said he was excited about his creation.

"It's taken over two months to build and comprises more than 500,000 bricks, but I'm really pleased with the outcome and can't wait to see what everyone else thinks of it! I'm delighted we have partnered with Toyota and I've had this opportunity to build my first full-scale Lego car."

Easter Saturday sees the return of the Alexandra & District Speedway Club to action, with the running of the Victorian Sports Sedan title and the Standard Saloon Valley Legends Classic headlining the racing along with support from all the local club classes.

Alexandra & District Speedway Club continues to be the destination for race drivers from Melbourne's eastern and north-eastern suburbs, as well as our local Yarra and Murrindindi shire competitors, and numerous drivers from those areas will be keen to keep the Victorian title number one mantle within the area, as Jamie Paull the defending champion comes to Alexandra to defend.

Steve Kershaw is one Alexandra member from his home town of Healesville keen to put on a good showing.

"There will be some great competition coming from out town to do their best to take the win; however, Alexandra have to toughest

group of competitors in the class to defeat at the moment. Very strong local competition, we figure in the top five regularly so we believe we are in with a chance for this title, I've set my sights on a podium result," Kershaw said.

Paull the defending champion had a race win recently at Wangaratta after a long rebuild of his car.

After ending last season with a crash at the same venue, he is primed to compete strongly at Alexandra as are the Miller brothers, Damien and Brendan.

Damien has held the Victorian title before while Brendan has the speed and the ability to do so and comes back to racing after a short break.

Leigh Bourke from Geelong, Nathan Fawns also from Geelong, Shane Kruger who won at Ballarat recently, Dale Morrison, Dale Smith and Jack Van Bremen all from the home club Alexandra should figure in the results.

A cookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tour for baker

By Wendy Williamson Tom O'Toole's Beechworth Bakery chain has long delighted customers across regional Victoria.

Now the irrepressible baker and inspirational speaker is rising to a new challenge.

Mr O'Toole and his best mate Keith McIntosh set off this week to travel across Australia from east to west to raise money for cancer research.

A week before their 21 March departure from Byron Bay they called into the Beechworth Bakery at Healesville to show off their chosen mode of transport.

Clearly it won't be a quick trip across the continent. The intrepid pair will be tackling some of Australia's roughest roads in a 1930 A Model Ford.

The little red 88-year-old has a maximum speed of 50 kilometres per hour.

"We've done a few mad trips together over the years, but this trip will really test us!" laughed Mr O'Toole.

"We'll be away about six weeks. We have to get back for Keith's 50th wedding anniversary!"

The aim of the 7443-kilometre trip is to raise $100,000 for Australia's only regionally based cancer research centre.

Based in Ballarat, the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute opened in 1998, inspired by a teenager who succumbed to cancer.

It receives no government funding and is totally dependent on the support of the community to continue research into more effective ways to diagnose and treat cancer.

"They're doing amazing stuff at the institute," said Mr O'Toole.

Let's talk about the train

By Kath Gannaway It may seem like a long shot, but it's a train of thought that Healesville engineer David Broadbent says needs discussion - before it's too late.

An engineer and consultant who has worked on major projects in Australia and internationally, Mr Broadbent is proposing a return of the commuter rail between Lilydale and Healesville.

With talk of a new railway station between Mooroolbark and Lilydale, the Maroondah Highway rail crossing at Lilydale on the state government's crossing removal plan, talk that the Bayswater holding yards are under pressure, and even more hypothesis about the potential in extending the line to a new Coldstream railway ... Mr Broadbent says it's critical to put the bigger Healesville proposition on the agenda of governments and transport authorities before decisions are made.

"It has to be on the radar. If they choose not to extend the line past Maroondah highway and that crossing is closed then the rail will never come back," he said.

His proposal is to have a commuter train running weekdays through to Healesville, and on weekends to Yarra Glen when it would connect up with a tourist train run by Yarra Valley Railways between Yarra Glen and Healesville.

"The tourist railway have made the physical effort to get the rail done between Healesville and Yarra Glen and they should be allowed to still work that corridor on the weekends, but Monday through to Friday it becomes the metro train," he explained.

In time, there could be an extension of that tourist line to Healesville Sanctuary.

Mr Broadbent has been canvassing public opinion on the proposal over the past month or so speaking to around 1500 people at the Healesville market and hundreds more at Yarra Glen Swap Meet.

"The people I spoke with were about 50 per cent local and the rest tourists coming into the town who thought rail would be a nice change," Mr Broadbent said.

He said he had canvassed students at Lilydale station who pointed out the difficulties that young people experience having to get the bus and train to classes and other events.

All but a handful were in favour of his proposal.

From his own experience, he says the current bus/train or evening car/train service from Lilydale is inadequate.

"I'm a senior now and would like to not have to driver every time I go to an event in the city.

I'd rather sit on the train and mentally debrief, and I'm sure others would too," he said.

One of the main impediments to reinstating the rail line between is the cost of restoring and replacing the historic timber bridges between Yering and Yarra Glen.

Mr Broadbent believes that's a bridge that doesn't need to be crossed.

"Except for the main bridge across the Yarra River before you pull in to the Yarra Glen station, I would say forget the bridges - they are a nicety of the past.

"You could put in concrete culverts and that reduces the cost and gets the job done."

"There are plenty of historic-looking bridges around. I think the bigger, and the harder thing to address is that we now need rail to carry passengers and possibly freight; that's the important thing."

According to Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe, the Lilydale railway station is safe.

She told the Mail the proposed extra station would service the population increase from the proposed development of the old Mitchell quarry site, and ease the pressure on Lilydale station.

"As far as I am aware, the Maroondah Highway crossing is to be removed as part of the crossing removals, but it's not listed for a couple of years," she said.

She cautioned that any proposal along the Healesville corridor would be competing for funds with essential infrastructure in the major expanding population areas in other parts of Melbourne, but also shared that she would be in favour of rezoning land adjacent to the old Coldstream railway station in Coldstream.

That may be what is needed to at least get the line extended to Coldstream.

In the meantime, and soon, Mr Broadbent says he would like to see a more visionary approach, and certainly more discussion with the ultimate goal seeing the return of a commuter train to Healesville.

Is your car on recall?

Drivers nationwide are being urged to check whether their vehicle is affected under the recent mass recall of Takata airbags.

With as many as four million cars estimated to be affected, there's a good chance many Yarra Ranges' drivers will be affected by the largest recall in Australian history.

An estimated two in every seven vehicles may need to be recalled.

The recall became public on Wednesday 28 February; after details emerged the defective Takata airbags have caused more than 23 fatalities worldwide and 230 serious injuries.

This includes one death in Australia.

Because not all vehicles may be recalled straight away, consumers should also subscribe to receive updates about future recalls on our website and check the supplier's 'recall initiation schedule' on the supplier's website, when available (it must be available by no later than 1 July 2018).

A subset of Takata airbags called 'alpha' are considered to pose the highest safety risk of all the recalled Takata airbags.

The Assistant Minister to the Treasurer, Michael Sukkar, has issued a compulsory recall for all vehicles with defective Takata airbags, after an ACCC safety investigation.

Meanwhile, the RACV wants prompt action by vehicle manufacturers to replace faulty airbags in recalled vehicles, after the Federal Government's compulsory recall.

In July last year, RACV called for the Federal Government to place a greater emphasis on the voluntary recall of defective airbags announced at that time.

RACV has since been putting pressure on manufacturers to speed up the process for replacing defective Takata airbags.

Michael Case, RACV's Vehicle Engineering Manager said, "RACV is pleased to see the Federal Government finally taking action to address this serious safety issue. "RACV urges Victorians to check whether their vehicle is affected by visiting the Product Safety Authority website. If your car, motorcycle or truck is on the list, call your local dealer-

ship or manufacturer immediately to arrange to get these airbags replaced," Mr Case said.

"We acknowledge this recall will no doubt come as an inconvenience to many Victorians whose vehicles are affected. RACV urges Victorians not to interfere with the safety features of their vehicles as any tampering could pose a serious safety risk to motorists and other road users.

"RACV supports the Australian Competition and Consumer Commissions' recommendation for people with Takata Alpha airbags to not drive the affected vehicles due to their

critical safety risk.

"It is important for Victorian consumers to know that replacing affected airbags is free of charge, even if you bought the car secondhand."

Young riders learning important road rules

By Derek Schlennstedt The roads around the Yarra Ranges were a little more crowded on Friday 23 Marchm as local schools joined in 2018's national Ride2School Day. The event, which is held in March each year, provides an opportunity for students, parents and teachers to try riding, walking, skating or scooting to school.

Though, getting in early for the event was Montrose Primary School who instead held their Ride2School event on Thursday 22 March.

Grade four teacher Wayne Armstrong said the turnout was fantastic with over 90 percent of students choosing to walk, scoot or bike to school.

"We've got a planning day tomorrow for next term so we decided to have ours today," said Mr Armstrong.

"Probably had around 90 percent of students choose to walk, scoot or bike to school which meant we had maybe 300 bikes and scooters there.

"We have quite a few small bike shed and it was overflowing ... we had to put them in the hall and oval - all around the school.""Those who lived far away dropped their kids off down the road and they walked down the road to the school ... it was a good vibe all around."

Spokesperson for the Bicycle Network, Anthea Hargreaves said students in Victoria would join half a million young people taking part in Ride2School Day nationwide.

Ms Hargreaves said the day was now in its 11th year, and the celebration would result in Victorian streets coming alive with happy and healthy students, teachers and even parents riding, walking, skating or scooting to school.

"National Ride2School Day is the flagship event of Bicycle Network's Ride2School program, which works with more than 1,200 schools to help develop an active culture and combat physical inactivity among young people," Ms Hargreaves said.

"It was introduced after health authorities found that-two thirds of Australia's young people don't get enough exercise to stay happy and healthy."
