By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong man slashed the neck of a house-mate who woke him up and harassed him for a ride to nightclubs in the CBD, a court has heard.

Geretharan Srikanathan, a 32-year-old Sri Lankan asylum seeker, lashed out with two box-cutter knives against three men - who he later told police were his “friends”.

He severed an artery in the neck of one of the victims who as a result was admitted to intensive care.

The man, who was also cut to the head and chest, underwent exploratory surgery to check there was no damage to a main artery.

Another man’s chest and arm were slashed during the fight at Srikanathan’s home on 17 February.

Srikanathan appeared on a custody videolink, pleading guilty to two counts of intentionally causing injury at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 March.

He had been in Australia as an “illegal maritime arrival” on a bridging visa for six years, the court heard.

According to police, the fight erupted hours after the men started drinking together at 5pm.

Srikanathan left the gathering to go to sleep in the lounge room at 8pm. He was then forcibly awoken by the other men at 11pm who wanted to be driven into the city, the court heard.

Srikanathan refused, telling them he wasn’t in a fit state to drive.

After further harassment, he reached for box cutters and “without warning” lashed out at the men, police told the court.

Srikanathan claimed to police he had been wanting to avoid the other men who were badgering him to drink earlier that day.

"We actually don't have to do anything until the EBA comes back stamped and approved by Fair Work Australia," he said.

Mr Whatley said the one offer did involve workers paying union fees direct "instead of us processing the paperwork" and a 2.5 per cent rise.

"We don't know who's in and who's not, we save ourselves a lot of work," he said.

"They said no."

Another option was to increase wages by between two and four per cent based on performance evaluations.

"Twenty-four workers would have got 2.5," he said.

"Another couple would have got three per cent and another couple two per cent."

He said Yakult also offered to fairly increase wages each year, and a flat two per cent with no concessions.

"As it stands today they've made no concessions whatsoever and they've increased the salary demand to three per cent," he said.

Mr Whatley said his last conversation with workers was via the National Union of Workers on Friday 16 March.

"They went on strike on Monday. I was on a plane to Brisbane on Tuesday and I've been in New Zealand Wednesday and Thursday," he said.

"I've had no contact requesting a meeting."

Charges follow bikie raids on 44 sites Police charged an Officer woman and a Dandenong man following a day of action against the Comanchero Outlaw Motor Cycle Gang (OMCG).

The 22-year-old Officer woman will answer charges of possessing prescription drugs and cocaine while the 31-year-old Dandenong man will answer recklessly dealing with proceeds of crime charges.

Both were bailed to appear in court at a later date.

Taskforce Echo, Crime Command and local detectives attended 44 properties across Melbourne, including the South-East, from 9am on Wednesday 21 March.

National Anti-Gangs Squad and Australian Federal Police members were also involved in executing the warrants.

Midnight brawl Two people received hospital treatment following a knife fight in Dandenong.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Craig West said the brawl broke out in Bedwell Avenue just after midnight on Sunday 18 March.

He said a knife was used, and one person received a minor cut.

Det Sgt West said the parties were known to each other.

Any witnesses should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

By Casey Neill Yakult says striking workers have been receiving a two per cent pay rise since January.

The 30 men walked off the job at the Dandenong South probiotic drink factory on Monday 19 March and have since maintained a 24hour presence at the site.

They told the Journal that management was refusing to speak to them.

Doveton man Paul Grundy, a Yakult employee of more than 12 years, said workers asked for a pay rise to combat the CPI (consumer price index).

"They only offered 2.5 per cent, but they wanted to take clauses out of the EBA (enterprise bargaining agreement)," he said.

"They don't want to take the money out of our wage to pay the union.

"They want us to pay the union direct."

Mr Grundy said workers told Yakult they would accept the 2.5 per cent rise if the EBA remained the same.

"Since then, the managers don't want to talk to us," he said.

Workers are now asking for a 3 per cent wage increase.

Yakult sales and corporate affairs director David Whatley said negotiations started last September.

"There have been offers and counter-offers," he said.

"As it stands, those offers are still on the table.

"It's just terribly disappointing.

"Our workforce in the factory has got a pay rise each and every year, even when there was no EBA in place.

"We pay above the award rate. Some receive in excess of 30 per cent above the award."

The lowest increase put on the table was two per cent, so Yakult has been paying that

“While we investigate those crimes, we also recognise that there are opportunities to target OMCGs in a way that reduces their wealth and effectiveness.”

Commander Millen said the Comancheros were directly involved in a range of businesses, from gymnasiums and tattoo parlours to brothels, where they hadn’t undergone the correct licensing, insurance or registration processes.

“To most people, these would generally look like normal businesses,” she said.

“You have people attending gyms owned by OMCG members who have no idea that their fees are contributing to the running of an organised crime group,"

A police dog tracked down an alleged burglar in Noble Park.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Craig West said the man entered a Leonard Avenue unit via an open front door about 10pm on Saturday 17 March.

He allegedly stole car keys, a phone and a wallet.

The occupant disturbed the man and chased him from the unit, Det Sgt West said.

The Victoria Police Canine Unit attended and located the alleged burglar in Leonard Street a short time later.

Police charged a 26-year-old Noble Park man.

Arrest over daylight robbery Police arrested a 16-year-old boy following a daylight assault and robbery on a woman in Noble Park.

The 24-year-old victim was walking along Lightwood Road about 12.45pm when the teen allegedly approached.

Police said he pushed her against a fence, punched her and stole her purse.

They arrested him after he allegedly used the victim's credit card later that day.

He will answer robbery charges in a Children's Court at a later date.

Charges over box cutter robbery Police have charged a man following an armed robbery in Noble Park.

They alleged that the man was armed with a box cutter when he approached a business counter on Leonard Avenue about 8.50am on Tuesday 13 March, grabbed a female store attendant and demanded cash from the till.

Police said the man fled on foot with cash and the victim was uninjured.

They arrested a 34-year-old man in Noble Park on Wednesday 14 March and charged him with armed robbery, threatening to inflict serious injury, assault, possessing a controlled weapon and theft.

The man, of no fixed address, was remanded to appear at the County Court on 7 June.

Could youth sport be the antidote to the Apex gang?

It seems a bold claim to make, but on the face of it, it appears sport could be at least part of the solution.

Witness our story this week on the efforts of both the Black Rhinos and the Peregrine Falcons - men’s and women’s basketball teams founded by Afri-Aus Care, out there making a difference.

They’re changing not only the sense of community involvement of young people, but driving down the crime rate at the same time.

In one sense, it seems remarkable that the answer could have been this simple.

But perhaps any Aussie who has seen this nation’s love of sport, and the effect of team sport on self-discipline, selfesteem and a sense of belonging, could understand.

True, it is only part of the solution.

What seems to be at play is a sort of tripod on which a stable life can be built - when team sport, a supportive home environment and a successful schooling situation team together to hold these young people up.

Because as we all know, any tripod missing a leg will soon fall over.

And the result of these three factors working in harmony?

These kids are going up against police on the basketball court, not facing off against them in the magistrates’ court.

None other than Magistrate Jack Vandersteen has referred to the court dealing with a lot of young people who don’t play sport.

So the evidence seems clear - with just a bit of will, in future these youths will not form gangs, but teams instead.

By Casey Neill Falcons and Rhinos are now working side-byside to support African youths in Greater Dandenong.

Afri-Aus Care founded the Black Rhinos basketball team for men last May and launched a new side for women, the Peregrine Falcons, at Dandenong Stadium on Tuesday 20 March.

Greater Dandenong Local Area Commander Inspector Mark Langhorn said the teams provided a fantastic youth engagement pathway.

"It's these types of community programs that promote a sense of belonging for young people that we are proud to support," he said.

"I applaud the organisers for taking a leadership role in engaging young people through education and sport."

Police officers took to the basketball court at the launch to play against the two teams.

"Community engagement is a core part of what we do as police," Insp Langhorn said.

"It's important that we continue to listen to community through various channels to ensure that we remain a relevant and effective police service.

"It also helps to ensure people from all backgrounds and faiths feel safe in coming to police if and when they need help."

Insp Langhorn said the area was the most diverse in the state.

"Police are here to keep the entire community safe and we welcome any opportunity to build relationships with people or groups who may feel isolated or disconnected from society," he said.

She helped him through his problems with drinking, drugs and court and embraced his idea of starting a basketball club.

The Black Rhinos were born.

"These young people, they just need love," she said.

"Give them hope.

"Things will change."

At the Black Rhinos launch, Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the court dealt with a lot of youths who didn't play sport, and emphasised its importance alongside family and school.

"If you combine those three things, the chances of you ever coming to court and having any contact with Victoria Police is minimal, in fact non-existent," he said.

Greater Dandenong MPs are among those embroiled in a scandal over misused funds at the 2014 State Election.

The Victorian Ombudsman, Deborah Glass, found that the Labor Party paid $387,842 in State Government staff allowances to campaigners from 3 March to 29 November.

The offices of Keysborough MP and Attorney-General Martin Pakula, retired Dandenong MP John Pandazopoulos and South-East Metropolitan representatives Adem Somyurek and Lee Tarlamis were among those used.

Ms Glass found the spend from Mr Pandazopoulos’s office was $21,757 and supported Cranbourne MP Jude Perera.

The $19,931 and $15,171 from the offices of Mr Tarlamis and Mr Somyurek respectively paid for campaigners for Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan and unsuccessful Frankston candidate Paul Edbrooke.

Mr Pakula’s office spent $5354 that supported Mordialloc MP Tim Richardson’s campaign.

Ms Glass also highlighted Mr Pakula’s $1 million in unsuccessful attempts to challenge her jurisdiction to carry out an investigation, in the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and the High Court.

Mr Pakula said Ms Glass first launched the case.

“The legal principles that were tested in this matter were very important principles to be tested,” he said.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams replaced Mr Pandazopoulos.

“I only had personal involvement in my own campaign,” she said.

“I ran my own campaign independent of John Pandazopoulos’ office and in accordance with the rules.”

Premier Daniel Andrews said the Labor Party would reimburse the funds.

"We all do."

He was born in South Africa, where he went through the apartheid, and then spent time in Asia where he felt like the odd one out. He found he fit in in Australia.

Mr Botha campaigned for more public art in Greater Dandenong during a period where he lived there, and was pleased to see progress.

"It's got a lot of potential to bring people together," he said.

"It speaks beyond cultures."

The new work forms part of the council's temporary public art collection, which aims to highlight undervalued spaces and create places of interest for people as they traverse the city.

An Eddie Botha artwork on Thomas Street, Dandenong, came to life in his studio and features blocks of colour and dozens of small faces.

"My work is always about interaction," he said.

"They're all different people, they're all different cultures, but they all fit together.

"I used a lot of colours because it's a very colourful place."

He said the piece featured compartmentalised people to symbolise associations with distinct groups, but flowing lines connected them in a show of harmony.

Mr Botha wants people who view the artworks to walk away with a sense of belonging.

The ghost in the machine

By Casey Neill Supernatural forces are rumoured to be behind the Drum Theatre clock chime ticking back into action.

Power surges are an alternative explanation, but there are plenty of spooky stories about Dandenong's old town hall to support the ghost theory.

Theatre co-ordinator Cheryl Rush said it started chiming about Tuesday 6 March.

"It's very interesting that it chimes the right amount of chimes for the hour," she said.

But the bells ring out at odd times, like 4.25pm, 12.23pm and 6.24pm.

Ms Rush explained that there were two separate mechanisms at play - one to control the clock hands and the other the chime.

"We've spent a lot of money to get them to work really well since Drum reopened," she said.

"The longest it ever chimed for was for one week after we got it fixed."

City of Greater Dandenong community programs officer Bridget Flood said the clock had never worked properly.

It chimed 117 times in a row when it was installed in 1934.

Ms Flood said it created bother even when it did work correctly.

"Because Dandenong was flatter, someone would be sleeping at the house and he would have to come and turn it off in the middle of the night because it was keeping up Dandenong, basically," she said.

It hadn't chimed for about five years before its recent return, which coincided with the ninth anniversary of Paul Streefkerk's death.

He was the Drum Theatre director when it opened and died suddenly on 2 March 2009.

The Journal reported last year that the spirit of former Dandenong Town Hall caretaker Edward Potter could be he heard walking the corridors at night, checking that the doors were locked.

Ms Rush has personally heard the eerie sounds while working late at night.

"Sometimes from upstairs we hear the voices of children," she said.

"Every night your hear footsteps and stuff.

"Often someone will try to lock the door when you're in there.

"There's something about how much we love this place.

"Maybe they loved it just the same and they're looking after it."

People can check out the ghost story firsthand at this year's Open House Melbourne event, on Sunday 29 July.

Greater Dandenong participated in the annual event for the first time last year and welcomed 1000 people to the Drum, Heritage Hill and the Dandenong Civic Centre.

Organisers hope to add a ghost expert to this year's Drum tour.

The Drum Theatre started life as the Dandenong Town Hall in 1890 and has a varied history, from hosting court hearings to town dances and armed forces enlistment.

100 years ago 28 March 1918 Dandenong Honor Roll On Monday, at the meeting of the Dandenong Shire Council, Cr Pearson reported that a list comprising names of local volunteers had been compiled for the honour roll.

Forty three had been killed.

One of the volunteers had died in hospital and two had died in camp.

He would like a direction from the council in such cases.

On the motion of the president and Cr Wilson, it was decided that the name of any lad who had volunteered and lost his life should be included in the list.

On the motion of Cr Pearson and the president, the writing of names to be proceeded with at once, provision to be made for 400.

Cr Groves suggested that the names be

placed in alphabetical order, without blanks and that when another batch of names were ready they could be written in the same way on another panel.

The idea of leaving spaces would be found unworkable

Berwick could be one of the Victorian suburbs to feature in the torch relay for the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

The three-day journey around Melbourne involving 10,000 torch bearers may include Berwick and Melton.

Australia’s first Olympic runner Edwin Flack is buried in Berwick and 1900 shooting gold and bronze medallist Don Mackintosh is buried in Melton.

The torch will leave Olympia in Greece in May 2000, reaching Australia in June.

Three Greater Dandenong community leaders have been appointed grassroots consultants to the Federal Government and Australian Multicultural Council.

Councillor and former mayor Jim Memeti, Young Victorian of the Year Victor Victor and Afghani Australian lifesaver Imtiyaz Saberi were inducted as people of Australia Ambassadors in Canberra on Harmony Day last Thursday.

They join 50 other national ambassadors appointed for a year for helping promote inclusion in their communities.

Pokies reform is needed I wanted to be a Greater Dandenong Councillor representative for the Alliance for Gambling Reform because it is an issue that I have been passionate about for a long time.

There are two questions I often get asked.

The first question is why I got involved in politics.

When I answer, people expect to hear education or health or inequality or climate change.

Instead I tell them it was pokies.

It is an answer that often surprises people.

But the reason why that was the issue for me, is because having lived all my life in Greater Dandenong I have been well aware of the immense damage that pokies have made to this particular community - to individuals, to families, to friends, to businesses.

It is not an issue of individual responsibil-

ity. Instead it is an issue we have a collective responsibility to solve.

And I remember what it was like before pokies came to Greater Dandenong.

So when I hear that having less pokies or having pokies that are not so addictive would mean the closing of hotels, the closing of sporting clubs and the end or reduction of their socalled community contributions, I know full well that all of these existed before pokies and

that if they continue to have meaning for our communities, they will continue to exist after gambling reform.

And when I hear about the revenue it brings into government coffers, I reflect that the revenue could instead come from the benefits of increased spending in restaurants and other activities rather than pokies, growing businesses that provide much more employment than pokies - not to mention the reduced health and welfare spending by governments trying to repair the damage that pokies have made.

The second question I often get asked is “what has gambling reform got to do with local councils anyway?” and why aren’t I busy being concerned about parks and libraries and footpaths.

I answer that one of the key legislated roles of a councillor is to advocate what is important

to change for the welfare of their communities.

We are a community that in many neighbourhoods has a high degree of disadvantage.

We are vulnerable to pokies like no other community in Victoria.

The damage that pokies do to Greater Dandenong is well-documented. The importance of gambling reform for our community is clear.

That’s why it’s vital for our council to advocate for it.

That is what Greater Dandenong Council with their partners in the Alliance for Gambling Reform are doing. We are not asking for prohibition - just for sensible gambling reforms.

We are asking for machines that are not designed to be addictive, for lower numbers of poker machines in disadvantaged areas like Greater Dandenong, and for councils to have a meaningful role in applications.

Stars are out to activate

By Casey Neill A personal news bulletin from Peter Hitchener helped Lighthouse Christian College to launch the Premier's Active April program.

The Channel Nine news presenter and Active April ambassador hosted the event at the Keysborough school on Wednesday 21 March.

About 700 students packed the auditorium to hear from Hitch and fellow ambassadors, impersonator Ben Price, Hawthorn Football Club player Luke Breust and Collingwood netballer Sharni Layton.

The kids sat with their sports house groups - Wesley Warriors, Luther Knights and

Ten Boom Titans - to build team spirit and took part in physical activities to win prizes.

The school presented Mr Hitchener with a trophy to mark his 45th year at Channel Nine.

He told the students that he tried to get to the gym most days. "The idea of Active April is for every one of us to do what we can to get 30 minutes of exercise a day," he said.

He suggested walking or riding a bike to school. "Thirty minutes a day is all you have to do," he said. Mr Hitchener said this would make a difference to not only individual health, but community health and connectivity.

"A school community like this is a perfect place for Active April to take hold," he said.

Mr Breust said urged the students to find a physical activity they enjoyed.

"For me it was always having a football in my hands growing up," he said.

"All those hours that put in from your age help you to reach that elite level.

"Being active and being out there with your family and friends, one, it keeps you healthy and two, it keeps your mind fresh."

Ms Layton said that as a kid, she just loved getting out there with her friends.

"When you're doing the fun stuff it doesn't feel like you're exercising," she said.

"When you are active you have so much more energy for when you're at school."

Supernatural encounters Drum Theatre co-ordinator Cheryl Rush has brushed shoulders with a few ghosts over her years working in theatre.

While speaking to the Journal about the spooky happenings at the former Dandenong town hall, she described the time she saw Old Mac in Warragul.

She said he was a cleaner who fell into the orchestra pit and died trying to drive himself to hospital. Ms Rush spotted him behind the exit door as she was leaving one night.

"I think he was just making sure no one else fell in the orchestra pit," she said.

Help for homeless animals Keysborough's Australian Animal Protection Society is moving after 40 years and needs donations to set up a temporary home.

Its Homeleigh Road site will be used for a school so the shelter bought new space in Chapel Road for a purpose-built facility.

A colourful walk Worried about getting a parking spot, Greater Dandenong Councillor Sean O'Reilly took an Uber to the Holi celebration at Keysborough's Tatterson Park on Sunday 4 March.

But he didn't factor in the return trip, he told the Tuesday 13 March council meeting.

Holi involves attendees throwing brightlycoloured powder over each other.

A powder-coated Cr O'Reilly walked the 4 kilometres home.

MORE HOMES GO UNDER THE HAMMER WHILE the vast majority of homes in Victoria are sold by private sale, vendors in regional Victoria are also experiencing strong results at auction.

In the year to March, new REIV data shows around 3100 regional homes were auctioned in regional Victoria with more than 2000 selling under the hammer. This was a 34 per cent increase in auction sales on the previous year while volumes rose 15 per cent over the same period in 2016/2017.

auction, up 45 per cent on the previous year.

Auction sales in the municipality also increased a significant 53 per cent over the year with more than 1115 homes selling under the hammer, delivering a clearance rate of 79 per cent.

Clearance rates are a key market indicator for homes sold at auction with high clearance rates indicating strong buyer competition in a particular area.

Clearance rates above 70 per cent typically suggest that the market favours sellers.

The Macedon Ranges also recorded increased auction activity over the 12

months to March with just over 161 auctions held - an increase of 16 per cent on the same period in 2016/17. Of those homes that went to auction, a solid clearance rate of 69 per cent was recorded.

Auction volumes also rose considerably in the Surf Coast, where 158 homes were auctioned over the year - a 41 per cent increase on the same period last year.

Vendors in the municipality achieved strong results under the hammer with a clearance rate of 75 per cent recorded.

Auctions were also popular in Ballarat and Campaspe with both municipalities recording around 135 auctions this year com.au

and clearance rates of 65 and 59 per cent respectively. Auction sales in these areas increased 17 and 50 per cent respectively on 2016/17 figures.

The Shire of Mitchell, north of Melbourne, also showed a strong improvement in auction activity with volumes increasing 80 per cent while sales under the hammer more than doubled their previous auction sales.

What is something people don't know about you?

My jobs. I had my own dancing school for 33 years.

I started full time work in general credits at Melbourne Wire Works.

I worked casually as a lolly pop crossing guard, cleaning doctors' surgeries, at Coles in Dandy and at Sandown Park Hotel.

I taught religious education for 10 years at Maralinga and Heatherhill primary schools, and was a director at Club Noble.

What was your most memorable moment?

Geelong winning the 2007 AFL Grand Final.

What would your last meal be?

A roast.

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

Noble Park Football Club and Geelong winning another Grand Final.

Why is Neighbourhood Watch important to Greater Dandenong?

NHW is very important to me as we, as a community, have to all look out for one another.

NHW Greater Dandenong brings our local police to talk to us at four forums each year.

The group is working closely with Greater Dandenong Council and police to make it a much better place.

What is your favourite book?

The Bible.

What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

That is a hard one.

Geelong Football Club players Joel Selwood, Gary Ablett, Patrick Dangerfield, my granddaughter Stacey, my daughter Nerolee and my Dad, who is deceased.

Duo up for business nod

By Casey Neill Basketball and financial planning don’t generally go hand in hand.

But they came together at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards breakfast at Punthill Apartment Hotel Dandenong on Friday 23 March.

Dandenong Basketball Association and Financial Foundations Australia were the first nominees for this year’s awards.

Chamber president Paul Broom encouraged everyone in the room to think about customers and suppliers who deserved to be in the running.

“Let’s keep it vibrant,” he said.

“Let’s get those nominations coming in.”

Dandenong Basketball Association CEO Graeme Allan said it had grown from six courts in 1990 to 15 today.

“We still turn away 54 teams every season,” he said.

“Five hundred people can’t play because

we haven’t got a big enough facility, but we’re streets ahead of everybody else with our facility."

Mr Allan said 15,000 people a week walked through the doors at Dandenong Stadium.

“That’s more than all the other sports in Dandenong combined,” he said.

“For us it’s more than just basketball.”

The association hosts a competition for intellectually disabled players each Wednesday and was instrumental in forming the Black Rhinos basketball team for African youths with serious criminal issues.

“Rather than turn them away, we actually brought them into our stadium,” he said.

They played in a grand final one year after starting.

“In the 12 months since the Black Rhinos have been part of the Dandenong Basketball Association, not one of those guys have reoffended,” Mr Allan said.

The women’s side Peregrine Falcons joined the family on Tuesday 20 March.

Mr Allan said the association’s Australia Day tournament brought $4.1 million in economic benefit to Greater Dandenong in three days.

Walk with it through life - side by side

By Casey Neill David Corduff fought through two severe bouts of depression.

The beyondblue ambassador told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce awards breakfast on Friday 23 March that he now walks side by side with the illness.

He manages it, rather than trying to get rid of it.

Mr Corduff urged the Punthill Apartment Hotel Dandenong guests to check on colleagues who they notice aren’t themselves.

“Ask the question. It could save their life,” he said.

His mother suffered post-natal depression and anxiety. It wasn’t until 1984 that he realised he’d inherited the mental illnesses.

Mr Corduff had a wife and three young kids to support when he was made redundant.

He secured a new job but found he couldn’t do it. He wasn’t eating. He wasn’t himself.

His wife sent him to a GP who diagnosed him with depression and referred him to a psychiatrist.

Medication and therapy got him back on track but years later, helping an employee who was struggling similarly sent him on another downward spiral.

Mr Corduff’s boss told him to “manage him

out of the business” and dubbed the employee a liability.

He was dismissed when he refused.

He landed a new job easily but depression had claimed his confidence and concentration. He was asked to resign.

“What I hadn’t told him at any stage was why I wasn’t functioning,” he said.

“One of the things I’d never done was share how I was feeling.”

Mr Corduff co-founded Gateways, a men’s group for retrenched middle-aged executives susceptible to depression, and mentored white collar criminals on their release from prison.

Cockle said his father started an accounting practice and saw a need for his clients to have quality financial planning advice.

He started the Dandenong company in 1983 and it’s now one of the largest boutique financial planning practices in Australia.

Mr Cockle said it had 1300 active clients, up from 900 five years ago, and put that down to investments in technology.

He said minimum standards for financial advisors introduced in recent years could help the business to grow further, as people without the required qualifications leave the field.

Personally, he completed a teaching degree but realised he didn’t have the passion for the classroom.

He returned to study and hasn’t looked back.

Hands for harmony Dandenong Plaza invited Dandenong Primary students to join hands to mark Harmony Day. The national day, held on Wednesday 21 March, celebrated everyone who calls Australia home.

The day aims to engage people in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster a sense of belonging for everyone.

The 150 students dressed in attire from different cultures and linked hands in centre court about 10.30am.

Plaza centre manager Mark Tannahill said Greater Dandenong had recently been recognised as the most multicultural municipality in Australia.

"So by observing Harmony Day we can actively mark this occasion with a celebration,"

he said.

"By gathering our local primary school students in a hand holding ceremony we can start reinforcing a message of cultural unity with our youngest community members."

The shopping centre also hosted cultural dance and music performances in the lead-up to Harmony Day, on Saturday 17 February.

Cultures collide in a clash of colours Doveton’s multicultural community came out in force - and colourful dress - to mark Harmony Day. The John Pandazopoulos Hall hosted the celebrations on Wednesday 21 March.

The nine ethnic seniors groups that use the hall organised a morning of food, dance, clothing and song from around the world.

There was a national costume parade, entertainment from Gypsy band Vardos and more.

Dr Teong Soo Saw founded the Chinese Events Committee, which holds the annual Lunar New Year Charity Ball that has raised more than $500,000 for charity over the past 23 years.

William Wai is the Knox Chinese Elderly Citizens Club president and founded the Cheng Khor Moral Uplifting Society to promote peace and harmony within the Melbourne community.

Xi Xiu Xiao arrived in Australia in 1985 and has been a Chinese language teacher since the following year.

She's an executive committee member of the Xinjiang Chinese Association and works to promote the benefits of harmony and multiculturalism.

The Xinjiang vice president since 2006, Ren Sheng Cao, was another recipient.

He's said to be the first to turn up to activities and well-known for volunteering to set up and pack away events.

He migrated to Australia in 1985 and became involved with the Chinese Support Association of Victoria in 1987.

Chang Zhen Zheng is the Federation of Chinese Associations in Victoria vice president.

He plays a key role in bringing together different Chinese-Australian communities across Victoria and promoting Chinese cultural events across Melbourne.

East Timor Chinese Middle and Aged Association president of six years, Leong Fuc Leong, has organised fundraisers for the Victorian Bush Fire Appeal, the Queensland Flood Appeal, the Chinese Earthquake Appeal and the Royal Melbourne Children's Hospital.

Ben is the class clown

By Casey Neill A Dandenong teacher-turned-comedian is on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival bill.

Ben Tiff started stand-up just over four years ago.

"That was just before my 40th birthday," he said.

"It's just a passion that I've always had.

"I really dragged myself out of my comfort zone.

"The first time I did it I pretty much felt sick in the stomach.

"The second time I did it, it wasn't much better.

"For some silly reason I persisted."

In his first full-length show, Tiff Upper Lip, Mr Tiff will cover his speed dating business succumbing to Tinder and uncovering an awkward family secret at a dinner party.

"I still get nervous, but it does wonders for your confidence," he said.

Mr Tiff is the head of English at the Narre Warren South Prep to 12 College.

"Being in front of a captive audience every day such as a classroom really does help," he said.

"My comedy has helped my teaching as well."

He said he'd always been more of a writer than a class clown.

"People who are funny socially don't make great comedians," he said.

"I'm not very spontaneous.

"I really like to write and craft my work until I get it just right.

"There's a lot of work that goes into comedy that you don't see.

"It's taken me four years and this is a showcase of my best work in 40 minutes."

"I feel extremely unfunny in those situations.

"A lot of people are actually terrified that I'm going to write jokes about them."

Mr Tiff would like to take his comedy "a bit further one day".

"Whether it's just in the comedy clubs or whether it's by doing something a bit different," he said.

Tiff Upper Lip is playing at 8pm from Friday 13 to Friday 20 April at the Kingston City Hall.

City is one step ahead

By Nick Creely Dandenong City’s barnstorming beginning to the 2018 NPL2 East season continued last Friday night with a solid 1-0 victory against Eastern Lions.

On a picturesque Friday evening at the Frank Holohan Soccer Complex, City came in as deserving favorites on their home pitch, after beginning the season in red hot fashion.

Both sides put the feelers out early and had their opportunities, but it seemed that City was moving the ball with a bit more freedom through the midfield.

Right before the half time break, the game broke open, with City’s Josh Knight slamming the ball into the back of the net to get the home side on the board, and crucially the lead.

Going in 1-0 at half time, City tightened up considerably in the early stages of the second half, and despite the Lions becoming desperate in their attempts to level up the scores, the home side were one step ahead.

Late in the match, City were able to get a good look into their squad, bringing on David Stirton and Ben Everson for some opportunities in place of star duo Shaun Filipovic and Daniel Visevic.

As a result of the victory, City sit third with four wins and 12 points, only behind Melbourne City and Moreland City on points scored. Prior to the game, the two club’s played in their U20 clash, with Eastern Lions overcoming a spirited second half comeback from City to win 1-2.

City are second last in the NPL2 U20 competition, and need to find form fast.

Speaking of finding form fast, City’s crosstown rivals, Springvale White Eagles, endured a horror weekend of NPL2 action against top side Melbourne City on Saturday afternoon.

Nick Kalmar’s Dandenong City stayed in touch with spot with a 1-0 win over the Eastern Lions. 164362 The Eagles; who have actually been in strong form early this season to be in fourth; were completely blown away on their home pitch in the second half, to lose 2-6. Incredibly, the Eagles were leading at half time 2-0 after

goals in a matter of minutes by Damir Stoilovic and Delarno Pharoe had the home side’s crowd roaring.

Stage set for Launching Pad take off

By Jason Adams The 2018 Launching Pad field has been assembled after four cracking semi-finals at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

Major player Beast Unleashed has come up with the coveted box 1 in this Thursday’s final.

He was forced to win the hard way in his semifinal after being challenged by Trixta Rox late in a thrilling finish. Co-trainer Peter Lagogiane was extremely proud of the run.

“He looked gone turning for home,” Lagogiane said.

“Tonight he showed he can do it when things don’t go his way - he’s a very good dog.”

Fastest heat winner Saint David produced yet another best-of-night win with a fast 29.31 victory in the opening semi. He capitalised on the rails draw to slide under the field at the first turn.

He ran home in a very strong 10.41 to defeat She’s Gifted, which also advances to the final.

Saint David will have to overcome Box 5 in the decider.

“His run home was strong as expected but he was a little fortunate early - not many races are led running 5.20 to the first split,” said cotrainer Brendan Pursell.

Dyna Patty continued the strong start to her racing career when she took out the penultimate semi in just her fourth career start.

Team Dailly have been bullish of Dyna Patty’s ability but she faces her toughest test in the final.

Navajo Bear was exceptional in the closing semi.

He speared to the lead and then set up a race-winning break before holding off Chief’s Sidekick late.

Heats of the consolation series were also ran. Tasmanian Junior Wizard was the fastest winner in 29.47 for the Greenough kennel. The consolation final will also be run on Thursday night.

The $210,000 Group 2 Launching Pad final will highlight a strong card of racing that includes the $25,000-to-the-winner Group 3 Easter Gift. Kids will be the theme of the night off-track for the club’s annual free event, Easter Kids Fun Night.

Young guns set to shine

With six players from the 2017 team joining AFL lists - including top 10 picks Luke DaviesUniacke (#4) and Hunter Clark (#7) - there is a great opportunity for the next crop of young guns coming through to fill the void left by those stars.

Dandenong Stingrays talent manager, Mark Wheeler identified three Academy players - Bailey Williams, Riley Bowman and Sam Fletcher -as players to keep an eye on.

"Sam Fletcher is probably the one that is really jumping out because his last game of football was round three last year when he went down with a lacerated kidney," Wheeler said.

"He's been a stand-out on the track and he's a good size now (189cm) - he'll probably play inside mid/half forward flanker roles."

The Stingrays boast a deep list; one that Wheeler says is probably the deepest in recent memory.

He spoke about the positives and negatives of culling the training squad down to the final list.

"There's a negative to the positive and the positive is that it means we're developing foot-

ball well in the zone, but the negative is that 10-15 young gentleman probably, in any other year, would've made our list."

What type of game style can we expect to see from the 'Rays in 2018? Wheeler explains.

"We're a strong, aggressive tackling midfield team - that's probably going to be our stand-out and something we're going to pride ourselves on." he said.

"We've got a lot of height - we've got six players at around 200cms, so we're going to have a fair bit of height up and down the ground. It's going to be quick movement - getting the ball in there quick to give our guys one-on-ones."

If there is one player who looms as someone to keep an eye on, it's Jake Frawley.

"Aaron Darling and Jake Frawley are coming back from serious ACL's. If anyone can

Champion Heinz Southern Districts all-rounder Michael 'Slick' Davies captured his maiden Wookey Medal on Wednesday 14 March at the Dandenong Club, as the champion Turf 1 player of the 2017/18 Dandenong District season.

The star Cobra; who is one of the most well respected players in the region; enjoyed his finest season in the association, notching up 468 runs at 42.5 and 35 wickets at the incredible average of 10.2.

Known for his stump to stump line and skiddy action, Davies was the leading wicket taker across the Turf 1 home and away season, and also played a fine hand with the bat on several occasions to help his Cobras over the line in several matches.

Davies plundered three half centuries and took three five wicket hauls, earning himself 37 votes from the DDCA's umpires, meaning he is the first HSD player to win the prestigious award.
