The car came to a halt about 200m north of the intersection of Forest and Heales roads.

Ld Sen Const Duncan said it was lucky that no one was driving in path of the out-of-control car, especially as the crash occurred during peak hour.

A man was fighting for his life in hospital yesterday after two crashes in 10 minutes caused traffic chaos at either end of Geelong.

The 24-year-old man remained in a critical but stable condition at The Alfred Hospital yesterday afternoon after veering off Forest Road, Lara, about 8.20am.

Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Gavin Duncan said the man appeared to have

suffered a medical episode before the crash.

“There are no elements of excess speed or anything like that - he was a young man going work,” he said.

“Witnesses recounted that he looked like he was pulling over beforehand.”

The man was heading towards Lara before he veered off the left-hand side of the road and drove over a wire fence, Ld Sen Const Duncan said.

Car crash chaos strikes city From page 1 He said the man held an interstate licence and that police had notified his family, but was unable to say if he was a Geelong resident.

Traffic was backed up almost 200m in each direction when police arrived. Police closed Forest Road between Heales and Canterbury roads, diverting traffic as paramedics treated the man.

An ambulance helicopter airlifted the man in a critical condition to The Alfred Hospital, arriving about 11am.

Meanwhile, a two-car crash less than ten minutes later caused traffic mayhem on Settlement Road at Belmont, with traffic backed

up for 2.5km.

At 8.26am a blue Ford Falcon crashed into the rear of another car about 30m north of the intersection of Settlement and Torquay roads.

The crash mangled the front end of the Falcon, trapping the 23-year-old male driver.

SES and CFA crews used the Jaws of Life to remove the side of the car to free the man.

The man suffered head injuries from the crash and paramedics treated him onsite, before taking him to Geelong hospital in a stable condition.

Barwon South SES’s Scott Clarke warned motorists to drive to the conditions and be particularly vigilant in peak hour conditions.

An outbreak of a deadly disease mostly affecting teenagers has prompted State Government to extend a “life-saving” vaccination program.

Meningococcal disease struck six victims in the Barwon South West region last year, with most cases involving the previously rare W and Y strains.

The disease usually kills 10 per cent of its victims and permanently disables 20 per cent.

The expanded vaccination program would target local year-10 students, the department of health and human services said.

In 2017 Victoria recorded 89 cases state-wide, resulting in six deaths, the department said.

Eight were recorded so far this year.

“Health experts predict this number will continue to rise as we approach peak season for meningococcal disease,” the department said.

“Young people aged 15 and 16 years old are at a greater risk of carrying and spreading meningococcal bacteria, as one in five carry it in the back of their throats and can pass the bacteria to family members and friends. The best way to protect young people and the wider community is through the free and safe vaccination on offer.

“One in 10 cases of meningococcal disease proves to be fatal, with death occurring within 24 to 48 hours of diagnosis. Two in every 10 people who survive (suffer) permanent disability such as brain damage or loss of fingers, toes or limbs.”

Vaccinating eligible teenagers was essential to “protecting the wider community from this deadly disease”, said Victorian deputy chief health officer Dr Brett Sutton.

“The meningococcal ACWY vaccine safely protects against four strains of meningococcal disease, the increasingly common W and Y strains as well as the A and C strains,” he said.

Geelong MPs ‘face rorts inquiry push’

By Luke Voogt Three Geelong MPs face a parliamentary inquiry into election funding rorts, opposition leader Matthew Guy has announced.

He said the coalition would call for an inquiry next week after Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass revealed on Wednesday that the ALP spent $388,000 of taxpayers' money on its 2014 election campaign.

“The findings of the Ombudsman’s investigation are just the tip of the iceberg,” Mr Guy said.

“The public deserve to know exactly how much has been rorted and by which Labor MPs.” More than 20 Labor MPs signed time sheets for electorate officers who were campaigning for party candidates in other electorates, the Ombudsman's report found.

Lara MP John Eren paid $2358 for an electorate officer to campaign on behalf of Lisa Neville in her seat of Bellarine, the Ombudsman reported.

The officer, Jake Finnigan, blew the whistle on the funding arrangements in 2015, prompting the investigation.

Mr Finnigan told 3AW on Wednesday that he met Mr Eren only briefly but blowing the whistle left him jobless.

The government paid $20,559 to an electorate officer in upper house MP Gayle Tierney’s Geelong office, who was in fact campaigning for South Barwon Labor candidate Andy Richards.

The government spent $1 million in taxpayer funds challenging the Ombudsman’s investigation in the courts over following years.

Mr Guy accused the government of hindering the investigation “to cover up their rorting”.

He said the opposition would move for a Legislative Council Select Committee to “get to the bottom of it”.

Local coalition MP Simon Ramsay welcomed the committee, after this week calling for the Geelong MPs to resign their ministerial posts.

“People have lost trust and faith in all three of them,” the Member for Western Victoria said.

“If they all think this is going to go away next week they’ve got another thing coming.“ But Mr Eren accused the opposition milking the scandal for “political mileage“, given the Ombudsman noted the MPs acted in good faith.

To his understanding, the funding arrangement was extension of “pool staff” arrangements which both parties had used for more than 20 years.

Businesses ‘confident’

The Ombudsman had described the guidelines for the funding as ambiguous and had already taken action to clarify them, he said.

But Mr Eren admitted the scandal was not a good look.

“It doesn’t pass the pub test,” he said. “The expectation of the community is totally different to what it was 20 years ago.”

Mr Eren pointed out that Premier Daniel Andrews had promised to pay the $388,000.

“I apologise, like the Premier has apologised, as to the way this has played out,” he said.

Mr Eren said he had expressed his doubts about the funding arrangement to the coordinator of the scheme, John Lenders who this week quit as chairman of the state’s major rail assets corporation VicTrack .

The coalition requires support from the Greens or the cross bench in the upper house to establish the select committee.

Of the three Geelong MPs, the committee can only compel upper house member Gayle Tierney to give evidence.

Mr Eren said he would refuse to be part of the opposition’s “political stunts” if the committee requested him to appear.

Ms Neville told the Indy she was not investigated by the Ombudsman “at any stage”.

Geelong businesses are “optimistic” about opportunities for growth, according to the city’s leading business group.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce said its annual business trends survey found that 45 per cent of respondents had “high or very high levels of confidence”, while the number planning to invest in their operations over the next 12 months was higher than in 2017.

Bridge headaches Proposals for a third bridge from Barwon Heads would create additional traffic headaches at Ocean Grove, according to the town’s community association.

An additional bridge would turn the town into a thoroughfare for residents of new Armstrong Creek estates travelling to destinations on the north and east of the Bellarine Peninsula, said Ocean Grove Community Association.

‘Expert’ rescuer A “world-renowned rescue expert” has conducted a road crash workshop in Geelong to improve the effectiveness of local emergency services, according to an SES statement.

Ronald De Zanger demonstrated latest tools and “rescue extrication methods” at the SES’s Bell Park office on Tuesday, the SES said.

Well, cyclonic might be a better description of his experiences following the AFL's season launch in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

That’s because the following day the man referred to in certain circles as Gorgeous Georgeous flew to Darwin - and straight into the teeth of Cyclone Marcus!

George safely hunkered down in his ritzy hotel as the winds raged, although he did brave the elements to film his version of cyclone-assisted pole dancing for Facebook.

The Sphinx operator was actually in town for Saturday's Darwin races, which were understandably cancelled.

At least George could look on the bright side: the races were blown away but at least his TAB account wasn't!

Zoe gets message together A Geelong TAFE student has kicked a goal for road safety with a hoody design for this year’s TAC Cup. The Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) this week unveiled Zoe Politis as the winner of its competition to come up with a message for the cup’s young male and female footballers.

“Road safety is all about the community coming together and protecting each other by driving safely,” Ms Politis said.

“I wanted to design something that represented people in the community standing together and supporting each other.”

Ms Politis gave Geelong Falcon players their first look at her hoody design on Wednesday ahead of the first round of the season.

TAC’s Candice McDonald congratulated Zoe on her design, which she said helped the organisation work toward its goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on Victorian roads “Young people are some of the most vulnerable road users and teaming up with Gordon TAFE and AFL Victoria students helps share important road safety messages.

Maybe George-ous should have just stayed home and attended the Geelong St Patrick's Day Cup instead.

After all, the St Pat's event ran happily the same day as its cancelled Darwin counterpart, and in fine weather, too.

Thanks in part to the absence of cyclones in southern Australia, the St Pat's Cup is now over 100 years old, with a dedicated club keeping it on the state racing calendar.

The cup also has a fair level of state dedication, too, with the Andrews government tipping in $30,000 as the event's largest funding source. And that wasn't the only public money on the races, with the club's website listing the TAC as an "industry" sponsor.

The job of announcing the state cash for a race day must have been a delicate situation for local MP Christine Couzens after spruiking state initiatives against pokies losses barely a fortnight before.

Her statement revealing the Pat's Cup cash turned up on emails at 4.33pm the day before, virtually guaranteeing no media coverage given local deadlines.

It's a fair bet to say she took a punt on scratching any blowback.

Women deny bikes plan sexist, ageist

By Luke Voogt Women cyclists have hit back at a health economist’s claim that council’s Belmont bike plan is sexist, ageist and elitist.

“It's the complete opposite,” said Belmont veterinarian Kim Lim. She was responding to Katrina Alford quoting in last week's Indy Census figures showing that more than three quarters of Geelong cyclists commuting to work were middle-aged males, most earning above average.

Dr Lim argued that the Census figures instead exposed the need for separated bike paths to encourage women, children and the elderly to ride.

“Good research shows that women are reluctant to ride if they have to mix it with traffic.

Many children are driven to school and to their activities because of this same reason.”

“Middle-aged men in Lycra” and other dedicated cyclists would continue to ride regardless of City Hall’s plans, Ms Lim said.

Dr Lim believed that removing some onstreet parking for bike lanes would harm High Street less than they feared.

“Elderly people do not park in parallel carparks, that’s for sure. There’s plenty of offstreet parking (lots) and they’re never full,” Dr Lim said Dr Lim cited Canberra and European cities as examples of where bike lanes had worked in contrast to her experience of growing up riding in Melbourne before its cycling upgrades.

“I used to take my life into my own hands.

Now it’s busier than Bourke Street on the bike paths.”

ON YA BIKE: Kim Lim with Belmont mothers, children and other residents campaigning for cycling (Rebecca Hosking) lanes in High Street. 178981 Debbie Biro said the lack of bike lanes forced her to ride on footpaths into central Geelong for her own safety.

“What really got me fired up were the comments in last week’s paper about who would benefit,” the Belmont resident said.

“I'm a woman, a mother and a bike-rider.

I would benefit from a safer ride from point A to B.” Ms Biro, who said she regularly rode to High Street to shop, believed that the proposed bike

lanes could even enhance business.

“I couldn’t tell you if I've ever parked a car on High Street. It’s just too busy and there's plenty of parking behind shops.”

Several Belmont traders have opposed City Hall’s proposed bike lanes, saying they will disadvantage the elderly and disabled, cause congestion and devastate trading.

Council plans to cut one lane of traffic in each direction and remove car parks for bike lanes along sections of High Street.

Local volunteers will work to save seals and other marine animals from discarded fishing equipment, environmental organisation Coastcare has announced.

The volunteers would manage the collection of discarded fishing lines and hooks along beaches from Apollo Bay to Geelong as part of a new partnership with Zoos Victoria, Coastcare said.

The volunteers would “assist in managing” Seal the Loop bins specially designed for the collection of fishing gear.

The bins included messages about “the threat that fishing material waste poses to local marine wildlife, Coastcare said.

“Coastcare is excited to partner with Zoos Victoria, to build on the results that this program has already had, in preventing fishing material waste from entering our oceans,” said Coastcare’s Bec Cross “Every year thousands of animals, such as seals, suffer from entanglement and from ingesting this material.”

“Seal the Loop bins are specifically designed to prevent rubbish being removed by wildlife and weather. Through Coastcare's network of coastal volunteer groups, we’ll work to increase the number of these bins along on the coastline and alongside waterways in Victoria, installing at least 40 new bins in the next 18 months.”

“Coastcare will also play a key role in promoting the Seal the Loop program and leading the annual waste assessment program. This assessment will provide us with more information about how much fishing waste the bins capture and keep out of oceans.”

“We’re keen to raise awareness that plastic waste, especially fishing line, poses a threat to marine wildlife when not disposed of responsibly.”

Jumping from a 27-floor building might not seem like everyone’s idea of fun but two local women will take the plunge for a worthy cause.

Ocean Grove's Jenni Farrar and Belmont’s Heidin Kunoo will participate in Anglicare’s Altitude Shift, which requires entrants to abseil down the St James building - all 113 metres of it.

The event aims to support children in foster care.

“Heidin came to me one day and asked, ‘Are you scared of heights?’," Jenni recalled.

"I thought she was asking me to change a lightbulb but then she asked, ‘Do you want to abseil?’.

“This is an opportunity for me to abseil down the front of a building and raise money for kids who really need it.”

Heidin has done the Altitude Shift before, in 2016.

“The first time I was totally nervous, but these (foster) kids don’t have a choice, but I do have a choice to try and make a difference,” she said.

“When I told my husband, he said ‘that’s a bloody stupid thing to do’,” she said.

“He’s a bit scared of heights, but I just look at as a way of helping foster kids.”

MISSING: Lachlan Dewar.

Police are searching for missing Geelong man Lachlan Dewar, who disappeared over the weekend. The 34-year-old was with his family at Torquay Road, Belmont, on Sunday but they have not seen him or heard from him since, police said.

“Police and family members hold concerns for Lachlan’s welfare due to a medical condition that requires medication,” said Leading Senior Constable Melissa Seach. Police believe Mr Dewar frequents the Geelong area and train station, Warrnambool railway station and Southern Cross railway station in Melbourne.

Police released an image of Mr Dewar on Wednesday morning in the hope someone recognised him and could provide information on his whereabouts.

Mr Dewar was last seen wearing a long black coat with blue jeans.

When not at work, Steve loves to restore old cars. Every year, Steve takes his restored 1982 Ford Fairlane on the esCarpade fundraiser for Camp Quality. The esCarpade event raises an average of $1.1 million every year and to enter, each car must be at least 20 years old. Last year, Steve and work colleague Barry drove from Port Macquarie to Toowoomba which Steve said was a lot of fun. They were able to raise funds for Camp Quality, and support the small towns they visited along the way.

GHAZEEPORE ROAD, WAURN PONDS The Council of the City of Greater Geelong gives notice it is proposing to declare special charges at its meeting of 22 May 2018 or subsequent meeting for the purposes of defraying expenses relating to the widening of the road and construction of a footpath in Ghazeepore Road, Waurn Ponds.

The total estimated cost of the works is $92,580 and the special charge to be levied by Council is estimated at $20,704. The details of the proposed declaration and cost estimate may be inspected at the City’s Brougham Street Customer Service, 100 Brougham Street, Geelong, Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 5.00pm.

The distribution of charges is based on a common access charge and amenity benefit based on the frontage of the property to the works. The estimated amount is shown in the following table below.

Once the work is completed, Council may vary the special charge to recover actual costs.

Homeless in ‘double’ rise “People in the private rental market are being left behind.“ About a year ago Salvo Connect introduced a private rental program to assist people struggling financially from slipping into homelessness.

“The person managing that is receiving a high number of referrals and has a very long waiting list,” Ms Shelton said.

“Our services are certainly stretched in managing this but we’re doing the best we can.”

Rising rent prices were also forcing many to couch surf or live in derelict properties to avoid homelessness, Ms Shelton said.

She said police moving the homeless off the streets in Melbourne in February 2017 was not behind the rise in homelessness in Geelong, despite reports at the time.

“There were some suggestions that maybe they were coming from Melbourne but our statistics didn’t show that.”

Ms Shelton urged the State Government to provide more funding for Salvo Connect’s transitional housing programs.

“We’re experiencing an increase in demand but not an increase government funding,” she said.

“We only have a finite number of houses to support people while they are working toward their long-term housing goals.”

The State Government in January funded a $3.5 million Salvation Army project to build 12 townhouses for the homeless.

“But it’s only a drop in the ocean,” Ms Hamilton said.

Norlane’s noisy Neighbours

By Luke Voogt A Norlane church is holding a Neighbour Day to search for a “community purpose“ for a recently freed-up building it owns.

The celebration on Sunday features free food, activities and live music, and will give locals a say on the building’s future, Reverend Peter Jewell said.

“Come along, have some fun and get to know your neighbours a bit better,” The Corio-Norlane Uniting Church owns the Dorothy Thomson Centre, which Barwon Health had leased for almost 40 years until last November, as an elderly activities area.

“We want it to be a space that enhances the community more than anything, rather than just give it to someone to lease it out,” Rev Jewell said.

The Neighbour Day also features a pop-up op shop and the public debut of the newly-

formed North Geelong Community Big Band.

“We’re not great yet but it’s all about the spirit of gathering,“ said band coordinator Liz Bonner.

“It’s the brass band concept but we’re saying, ’anyone can join and we’ll make it work.’

“Too many people get focussed on the negatives of the north. You can either be the victim or do something positive.”

The day will also feature a mix veteran and emerging northern Geelong musicians including Robert Blair, Ian Burrowes , Haziel Rodil and Hannah Reeves.

The op shop will raise funds for the church and its national charity arm Uniting.

Rev Jewell thanked Geelong council and the groups supporting the day.

“We need to work together to enhance the community because we can’t do it all by ourselves,” he said.

Homelessness in Geelong is growing at more than double the rate of the city’s population, according to latest Census data.

Geelong’s increasingly expensive rental market was the main factor driving the rise, according to Salvos Connect Barwon director Lorrinda Hamilton.

House rents rose 4.6 per cent in the last quarter to a median price of $350 per week, she said.

“It’s very concerning - imagine trying to afford that on a Newstart allowance.”

There were 815 homeless people in Geelong in 2016, a rise of 22.7 per cent from 664 in 2011.

The rise outstripped Geelong’s population growth of 10.5 per cent (215,837 to 238,603) during the same period.

Salvo Connect Barwon, which covers a large portion of western Victoria, had 1778 first-time clients from March 2017 to March 2018, up 246 on the previous year and 498 on the year before.

Salvo Connect Barwon’s Naomi Shelton said the influx of professionals moving to work at various new government headquarters in Geelong had driven up demand for rentals.

“What that is resulting in is rent prices are going up and its making it harder for people to get into the market.

“We are certainly seeing more people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.”

The loss of manufacturing jobs meant hundreds more people were struggling to afford the increases, she added.

Ride to raise cancer funds A group of 40 riders passed through Geelong this week on their quest to cycle from Melbourne to Adelaide to raise funds for cancer patients.

The cyclists departed St Kilda Marina early on Sunday morning, catching the ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff before cycling to their overnight stay at Waurn Ponds.

The cyclists hit the pedals again Monday morning, riding along the Great Ocean Road.

They continued on this week to raise money to build family-style homes for country patients visiting hospitals in major cities.

A dental health agency has described local kids’ teeth as “worse than the state average” as they prepare for their annual indulgence in Easter chocolates.

Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) said 54.4 per cent of children in the Barwon region who presented at dentists’ clinics had previously suffered tooth decay, with many hospitalised.

The state average was 50.4 per cent, DHSV said.

The agency rated the Barwon region’s children as having the third highest rate of tooth decay in Victoria.

“These figures are especially distressing as the latest data for 2015/2016 shows 5900 Victorian children aged zero to 14 (were) hospitalised due to preventable dental conditions,” DHSV said.

“Most of these hospitalisations are for children having general anaesthetic for management of tooth decay, which could have been avoided with good oral health practices.”

DHSV highlighted the statistics on Tuesday, which was World Oral Health Day. The date was particularly timely this year, DHSV noted.

“With Easter fast approaching, it’s time to rethink those sugary treats,” the agency advised.

Expecting children to forego chocolate at Easter was “unrealistic” but parents should still help them take care of their teeth, said DHSV chief oral health advisor Martin Hall.

“It is important that we don't forget about our oral health. Tooth decay can occur when you consume food and drinks containing sugar and starches,” Mr Hall said. “Bacteria in the plaque on your teeth mix with the sugar and are converted into acids that attack the surface of the teeth. This can lead to tooth decay or holes in the teeth. This is a big price to pay for not taking the time out to brush your teeth.”

DHSV’s tips to help children enjoy Easter while minimising tooth decay risks were: eating any chocolate at mealtimes rather than between meals; brushing twice daily with a fluoridated toothpaste without rinsing afterward “for maximum effect; and providing healthy alternatives while limiting sweet foods.

The local decay rates follow the fluoridation of Geelong’s drinking water in June 2009.

Authorities said the addition of fluoride would help with dental health, although ongoing tooth decay rates have been blamed on the cost of dentist appointments and the “late” introduction of fluoridation to the region.

Admin’s ‘wrong’ on goats

By Luke Voogt Ratepayers Geelong and a local MP have joined campaigners against a planned Lara goat farm, calling for alternative locations for the controversial proposal.

Ratepayers Geelong secretary Denis O’Bryan described the proposed location as inappropriate for “intensive animal husbandry” given its closeness to homes.

“This use is banned within all the residential zones, which form a semicircle around the approved site, as close as 500m to 1000m,” he said.

“Any airborne pathogens and any animal smells will blow unobstructed into homes when our most common winds blow.”

Geelong’s state-appointed administrators granted the planning permit for the farm in 2016.

“We at Ratepayers Geelong Incorporated are perplexed by the administrators’ decision to allow an intensive animal factory at 240 Forest Road South,” Mr O’Bryan said.

Mr O’Bryan called for the relocation of the controversial 4500-goat farm away from homes and closer to Avalon Airport.

“We recognise that the industry will provide employment opportunities and export potential for our area, and we appreciate the initiative of the investors to choose our region.”

Local Liberal MP Simon Ramsay said establishing “an intensive animal industry” so close to established residential housing was “ridiculous.”

In February, the Member for Western Victoria called on Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford to ensure Lara residents’ safety but stopped short of opposing the farm outright.

“I fully support Victoria’s strong agricultural industry, but it should never compromise on the health and safety of animals and humans,” he said at the time.

But last week he changed his position after meeting with concerned Lara residents.

Mr Ramsay raised the matter with Ms Pulford in parliament months ago and was still awaiting a response.

The neighbouring Golden Plains Shire’s well-buffered food precinct of 2800 hectares suited the proposal better, he said.

Mr Ramsay and Ratepayers Geelong echoed the No Nuchev Campaign, a large group of Lara residents protesting the proposal.

The group on 27 February presented a 2400-strong signature to for City Hall to appeal the farm, which council will respond to next Tuesday.

LETTERS Numbers up for Lisa Neville Despite the Andrews Government’s rhetoric, latest crime statistics show an increase in home invasions of 48 per cent, aggravated robbery 29.65 per cent, crimes against a person 17.7 per cent, assaults 36.6 per cent, and motor vehicle theft 10.2 per cent.

Minister for Police and Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville has been trying to mislead greater Geelong communities that crime has reduced, but statistics don't lie.

In Geelong, Christine Couzens’ own electorate, crime is up 24 per cent, and in Lisa Neville's Bellarine electorate, where she chooses not to live, crime is up 6.4 per cent. Crime is up, assaults are up and home invasions are up.

The Police Minister is in constant denial about the law and order crisis in our communities. With senior police on leave from Geelong Police command, allegations of police underreporting incidents, and political interference with police members, Ms Neville's police portfolio is in utter chaos.

Ms Neville should step down immediately as Minister for Police while goings-on at Geelong Police headquarters are investigated.

Targeting property owners Proposed Victorian Government changes to the Local Government Act may be of serious concern to residential and commercial property

The changes, if passed, would enable enactment of the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET), with possibly serious consequences.

Property owners would be unable to deny council access for assessments related to energyefficiency targets and would be required to undertake demanded works.

Tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of works might be ordered, with the proposed act providing for council to take ownership of properties to recoup costs if the owners cannot pay for the ordered improvements.

As drastic as this all sounds, it’s the absolute truth.

The VEET legislation also requires startling reductions in household energy usage of up to 60 per cent. Few would approve of such drastic laws but they are waiting in the wings to be passed into law soon.

Greens mad on cars The Greens are calling for electric-only cars on Australian roads by 2030 Under the Greens’ policy, the sale of new petrol or diesel cars would be banned from 2030.

Electric cars would have virtually all taxes removed, meaning that owners of petrol, diesel and LPG vehicles would subsidise the switch.

However, do the Greens really know what they are doing?

Australia produces just enough energy to keep the lights on now. Given that we will import one million extra people into the country over the next three odd years where would the power come from to recharge the electric cars?

I assume the cars would be charged at night when the Sun doesn’t shine, so the power would have to come from the grid.

City Trumps NY, pair say never see them so they wouldn’t know ... ” Speedmouse became a part of their act more than a decade ago - by accident - after Collins and Dundas dressed him up to help out with a show.

“He just came on, put the microphone down and walked off - he didn’t look very happy,” Collins said.

“The audience were just laughing at it.”

Collins looked forward to getting back on stage, which he said offered much more opportunity for creativity than the TV screen.

But more than anything the Umbilical Brothers love getting to the end of a show.

The duo let audiences suggest sketches in an improv free-for-all after each show, Collins explained.

“I prefer when people ask for something that’s really absurd,” he said.

The Umbilical Brothers have performed together for more than 20 years, which Collins credits to them living in different cities.

“If you want a relationship to last just get the hell away from each other.”

Collins reckoned his partner in crime might be responsible for a Wikipedia entry stating they met when “Collins swung around and broke Dundas’ nose” at a Western Sydney salsa club on a hot summer’s night in 1988.

“I actually broke his nose in acting class,” he said.

A mime task in that same class set the duo on their comedy path.

“We didn’t like mime,” Collins said.

“But we started adding sound to it and it was just so much more interesting.“

The Umbilical Brothers have starred on The Late Show and performed worldwide - now they return to Geelong with their favourite roadie, Speedmouse.

“It was fun in New York but it was kind of a hard slog for us,” said David Collins, one half of the pantomime icons.

“We don’t have a following as much there.

We much prefer Geelong.”

Collins said touring Australia was much more fun than the US, despite the country being a comedy heartland thanks to President Trump.

“There are little tiny gags that only Australians get - Americans don’t understand the concept of making fun of yourselves but it’s in our DNA. “I love putting s**t on myself, when my kids aren’t doing it. It’s my favourite thing to do.”

The Umbilical Brothers grabbed “Trump by the pantomime” in a gag on The Late Show a day after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s heated conversation with the President last year.

“We were there because of that guy who’s in charge but Trump’s not funny anymore - it’s hard to make a joke of a joke.

“I thought, ’What are we doing in America?’”

Collins and ‘brother’ Shane Dundas come to Geelong with their creepy clownesque roadie Speedmouse on 6 April.

Country duo up for ‘chat’

By Luke Voogt Australia’s power couple of country, Adam Eckersley and Brooke McClymont, will invite Geelong locals into their lives when they play at Corio next month.

“The majority of the shows we’re sitting on stools telling stories between songs,“ Eckersley said.

“It’s like we’re just in our kitchen telling jokes and having a chat.”

“People always go away knowing a bit more about Adam and I - which is great,“ McClymont added.

The couple spoke to the Indy after McClymont and her sisters hosted the Australian Country Music Channel’s annual awards.

“The girls and I really sunk our teeth into it,” she said. “We didn’t stuff up too much so that was good.”

It was a big night for The McClymonts, who won best group, and Eckersley got stuck into the celebrations after the win.

“There are probably some details I can’t tell because I can’t remember,” he laughed.

“We still think we’re teenagers at 3am but we’re quickly reminded, when our little girl comes in at 7am, that we’re not anymore. We’re well past that.”

Eckersley and McClymont are veterans of the industry but their latest album, Adam & Brooke, is the first time they have recorded together.

They smashed out the album in five weeks while McClymont’s sisters, Molly and Sam,

who she normally plays with, were “concentrating on being mums”.

“We had this brief window of time and we thought we’d get stuck into it,” Eckersley said.

“We spent a lot of time writing over those few weeks of fury.”

But their experience writing for each other made the task easy, his wife added.

“If anything it’s been quite nice. We work really well together.”

McClymont described the response to the album as amazing.

“Now we’re on this massive tour,” she said.

“We enjoy the travelling too - we get to see Australia and get paid for making music.”

The couple’s five-year-old daughter has also joined them on some of their latest travels.

“We don’t want to have her out of school too often but it’s been great for her to see the country,” Eckersley said.

“She has a real natural flare for music. I think she thinks all of her friends’ parents play music as well.

“We’re not pushing her into anything but she’s been surrounded by music her whole life - even in the belly.”

“I was still touring when I was eight months pregnant,” McClymont explained.

Their gig at the Gateway Hotel on 14 April will be the first time they have played at the venue together, she added.

“The crowd just get into it there - they’re awesome. It’s a long drive down so please come and see us.”

There are no hooks or pockets either to stop things from sliding around.

All Stingers come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as satellite navigation with 10-year SUNA map updates. The 8.0-inch colour touchscreen also presents the view of the reverse camera with good picture quality and on-trend graphics. The system itself is simple enough to navigate through touch and works well with the dials and buttons for climate and volume control.

There is no lusty V8 in this Stinger range but Australians have shown that we are not averse to a twin-turbo V6. It is the latter that lies at the heart of this Stinger Si with the 3.3-litre unit producing a healthy 272kW of power, and 510Nm of torque with a wide 1300 - 4500rpm band.

A smooth eight-speed auto transmission drives the rear wheels and for the most part performs to the car’s advantage.

The Si is well-equipped in terms of safety with a package that includes seven-airbags, lane-keep assist, rear parking sensors, rearview camera autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian-protecting pop-up bonnet. No blind spot alert or rear cross traffic alert though which are the preserve of the GT line and slightly disappointing given you are handing over close to $60,000.

By Vani Naidoo Comedians will tell you that timing can make or break an act. The arrival of the Stinger, just as the lights were turned off on the local production of certain well-loved Aussie legends, is testament to Kia’s impeccable timing.

The Stinger is no laughing matter though, the rear-wheel-drive performance car that doubles as family chariot. It is not only the fastest production Kia, it may also mark the end of the badge snobbery that tends to follow in Kia’s stead no matter the talents the South Korean manufacturer displays.

We were delighted to have the company of the V6 Stinger Si for the week. It not only turned heads but made for a truly enjoyable experience.

With its sleek profile, arresting headlight stack and funky vents that are both stylistic and functional, the Stinger is hard to ignore. It has a touch of the Audi A7 Sportsback about it too but more in a nod to style than creepy imitation. The signature Kia grille smiles pleasantly back at you but seems to give off a more determined edge than it does in the SUVs for instance.

Effort has made in the cabin to create a comfortable contemporary space that does lack for premium touches.

We liked the harmony of the centre stack where buttons are used effectively to complement touchscreen functionality. The dials for the climate control and audio systems lie below the 8.0-inch colour infotainment screen and are so much more effective than trying to navigate the screen each time you want to change them. Drinkholders are on the smallish side as the door bins, but probably not such that they will annoy.

The electrically-adjustable leather seats are set low in the cabin and are supportive and comfortable offering a slightly sporty feel. The sloping roof of the Stinger impedes headroom for very tall back seat passengers but there is plenty of space to stretch out the legs.

The kids had no problem settling in and loved the controllable air vents and storage in the pull-down middle seat compartment.

There are two IsoFix fixings but fitting the top tether of the car seat can take a bit of manoeuvring.

Marketing promises that this hatch offers the practicality of a wagon is tainted a touch by a boot which is smaller than you would expect - a real disadvantage of rear drive cars. The boot is long and wide enough to deal with the

Pinkies and reddies bite ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Wild winds forced anglers to seek shelter last week, with Corio Bay’s innerharbour a great choice for its access to pinkie snapper.

In fact, the pinkie fishing was some of the best experienced in recent times.

Casting Gulp soft plastics was very effective on fish to 45cm at locations including the spoil ground just out from Limeburner’s Point boat ramp and the deeper structure around St Helens.

Land-based anglers got into the action from the rocks at St Helens and Limeburner’s boat ramp, with the odd large flathead providing a welcome bycatch.

Whiting kept anglers entertained along the Curlewis Bank, off Clifton Springs. Fishing the last hour or two of light was the key to success, along with using pippie or mussel baits.

Alcoa Pier hosted Australian salmon.

Anglers trolling or casting lures caught fish to 1kg.

Squid proved hard to tempt around Clifton Springs but were a viable target species on size-three artificial jigs.

Anglers able to pick a break in the weather discovered that the whiting fishing was picking up off St Leonards.

Bag-limit captures remained limited but the numbers of fish increased, with fish of 38cm common.

Inside the Swan Bay’s channel was another great location to seek shelter for mixed bags of pinkies, flathead, whiting, garfish and even squid at times. The key remained picking a slower-moving runin tide.

Fishing The Rip was tricky due to the weather but anglers who managed to find a break were kept busy with kingfish. Jigging with 150g to 200g knife jigs or fishing deep with fresh squid baits did the job on kings to 10kg.

The Barwon River estuary produced silver trevally and smaller-model salmon along the Sheepwash section. Fishing live Bass yabbied accounted for some big black bream for anglers patient enough to wade through all the smaller pickers.

On the freshwater scene, redfin started to feature among anglers’ catches.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir still lived up to its moniker, The Lake of 1000 Casts, but at times anglers banked 40cm reddies. Spoon-type lures like Pegron Tiger Minnows or Norries Wasabys were ideal.

The Barwon River between Queen’s Park and Breakwater was full of redfin, although a slightly different approach worked best compared to the lakes.

Smaller hard-body lures that dive 1.5m accounted for good numbers of redfin but the size was down on Wurdee Boluc, with most redfin averaging 30cm.

Next week anglers looking to wet a line should try to venture out onto Corio Bay, where casting soft plastics should provide good fishing for pinkies. Anyone down the Bellarine Peninsula could try St Leonards for whiting out from the yacht club, while casting squid jigs from the pier during the evenings should also be productive.

Other options include kingfish and tuna offshore, elephant fish in the Barwon estuary and, in freshwater, redfin at Wurdee Boluc.

Pies’ eyes on prize LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club's season ended with a disappointing loss to Fitzroy Doncaster last weekend.

The Cats were boosted pre game with the news that skipper Eamonn Vines would in fact be available following his early return from state duties.

Bowling first, Geelong soon had the top placed side on the ropes, reducing it at one stage to 7/116, with Brenton McDonald (5/34) doing most of the damage.

But a rear-guard action from the tail helped Fitzroy Doncaster claw its way to 185.

The Cats had the chance to knock a sizeable chunk off their target on day one but unfortunately the top order succumbed to the pressure as the side went to stumps four wickets down, still needing just over 130 more runs the next day.

Sunday resumed much the same as Saturday had finished, with regular wickets falling, meaning the side fell well short of its target, dismissed for just 110.

It was a disappointing way to bow out.

However, to make the finals was a huge tick for the club, particularly after losing its first few games of the season when another wasted year looked likely.

With some really talented players starting to show what they are capable of, the club will look forward to next season with much enthusiasm.

In Geelong Cricket Association it's grand final time, and in division one raging favourite North Geelong will take on East Belmont at Stinton Oval, Queen’s Park.

The Magpies put together a solid win against Lara last week when dismissing the Cats for 163, coach Nathan Fitzpatrick taking

Jim Timberlake 4/52 while Andrew Fergusson and Shaun Kingwell both took two wickets.

In reply, North Geelong was made to work hard but Curtly Balshaw (47) knuckled down and, with help from Sam Hall (24) and Braden Szponar (22), went on to record a convincing five-wicket win.

East Belmont earned its spot in the big one with a completely dominant performance against Grovedale.

The Tigers won the toss and batted first but could only manage 121 runs. Alex Willerton (3/30) was the pick of the bowlers but it was wicketkeeper Locky Inglis who had everyone reaching for the record books when he took seven catches and one stumping in an incredible performance.

In reply, East was barely troubled, cruising to an eight wicket win on the back of Andrew Baars (54*) and Matt Lineker (51) showing great maturity.

Both North Geelong and East Belmont have been in the mix for the past few seasons without being able to get the job done, so both will be desperate to win this.

North Geelong has been the dominant side all season and will deservedly start favourite

but will need to bury a few ghosts of finals past to get the job done.

In division two, Bell Park moved through to the grand final with a fairly comprehensive win against Marshall last week.

The Dragons posted 226 on Saturday, Daniel Mclean top-scoring with 44.

On Sunday, they raised the pressure even further and strangled Marshall out of the contest, the Bears eventually dismissed for just 124.

The other side to progress was Torquay in probably the upset of the season against Bell Post Hill.

Torquay batted first and could only post 157, Tom Jefferson top-scoring with 69.

In reply, the Panthers looked like doing it easily when they reached 2/72 but again it was Jefferson (3/9) that proved the difference as the favourites were dismissed for just 132.

Bell Park will start the grand final as favourite but Torquay will go in with a nothing-tolose attitude. It could just be that the side batting first has the upper hand in what will be a very important toss.

And in division three, Thomson goes into the grand final as red hot favourite after beating Alexander Thomson.

The Tigers batted first and posted 228, thanks mainly to Jayden Hicks 69. At 3/100 in reply, the Vikings were well in it but succumbed to the pressure to be all out for 156.

Meanwhile, Modewarre thrashed Geelong West, making a mammoth 283 on Saturday before ripping through the Rams for just 61 on day two.

There is no doubt Modewarre at its best can take it up to the favourites. But we haven't seen Modewarre’s best often enough, meaning that Thomson should have enough poise to withstand the pressure and get the job done.

Warriors look to score with visitor Saints

After an impressive start to the 2018 NPL2 campaign, North Geelong Warriors experienced its first loss of the season at the hands of a well-disciplined Moreland Zebras, going down 1-0 last weekend.

The Warriors’ attention quickly turns to the visit of St Albans this Saturday at Elcho Park.

St Albans has had some free scoring weeks after a thumping 7-0 win over Sunshine then a dramatic come from behind 4-4 draw with Melbourne Victory.

The goals have been coming from a range of sources but there’s no denying Roddy Covarrubias and Michael Grgic are in fine form with seven between them in recent weeks.

The Warriors will look to get their scoring going again after having their first scoreless afternoon for the year last week.

In the first half against Moreland the pace was taken out of the match when the Zebras held possession and limited opportunities themselves, resorting to shooting from range to apply pressure.

In the second half Madison looked the most likely to open the scoring and almost got there when he beat three defenders to approach goal, trying to toe poke it past Andre Janesse but he was up to it and comfortably gathered the ball.

The deadlock was broken in the 77th minute when Beau Summers received a throughball from a contentious tackle that caught the Warriors out of position and allowed Summers to slot past an isolated Hamish Flavell.

True to form, the Warriors then staged a lift in tempo.

Thomas Hidic came on, almost bagging his third of the year when he received a sharp cross in the box from Madison only to see his chested ball slide over the top of goal.

Coach Luciano Trani was glowing of keeper Flavell post-match but disappointed that the team was unable to adjust to the slower tempo of the match, which unsettled the Warriors’ flow.

Selwood milestone to inspire Geelong

By Justin Flynn Inspirational Geelong skipper Joel Selwood will play his 250th AFL game when he runs out in Sunday’s season opener against Melbourne.

The champion 29-year-old midfielder is a six-time All Australian (three as captain) and a triple premiership player with the Cats.

Selwood’s career has spanned 11 seasons.

It may only be round one but it’s already looming as an important clash.

Geelong holds a commanding recent record against its round one opponent, Melbourne.

The Cats have won 12 of their past 13 encounters against the Demons with seven of those victories by 50 points or more.

The only blemish was in round 12 in 2015 when Melbourne caused a major upset at Kardinia Park winning by 24 points.

Most pundits are predicting that Melbourne will break its finals drought this season. The Dees missed the eight last season by percentage, but with high-profile recruit Jake Lever in the red and blue, they are expected to take the next step.

The expectations around Geelong are even greater. With the acquisition of favourite son Gary Ablett, the Cats are one of the premiership favourites after a topsy turvy 2017 finals campaign.

The Cats were the victims of a second-half qualifying final rampage to eventual premiers Richmond, impressively disposed of Sydney in a semi-final and then felt the full wrath of Adelaide in a preliminary final.

It’s a big season looming for Melbourne key forward Jesse Hogan.

Hogan suffered several injury woes, before losing his father to cancer last year and then being diagnosed with testicular cancer himself.

Hogan’s JLT form has been good and the Demons will be pinning their hopes on him being a 50-plus goalkicker this season.

Gun ruckman Max Gawn looks to be back to his 2016 career best season while young stars Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca will be looking to pick up from where they left off in 2017.

While the preseason talk has been all about ‘Dangerwoodlett’ down at GMHBA Stadium, Mitch Duncan has quietly slipped under the radar.

Surfers get Pro chance Some of Victoria’s leading surfers are set to battle in their own trials event for a chance to compete against the world’s best at Bells Beach during Easter.

The Visit Victoria Trials will pit locals against competitors from around the state for a single wildcard into the men’s division of the Rip Curl Pro. Other male hopefuls from interstate and overseas will compete for a second wildcard in the event’s separate Rip Curl Trials.

Organisers said a single wildcard would also be available to the woman who won a combined Victoria and Rip Curl Trials.

“The Visit Victoria trials is an integral part of our development pathway” said Surfing Victoria chief Adam Robertson.

“It ensures that our junior surfers get a chance to surf at Bells Beach but also provides a platform for our more experienced competitors to get a shot in the main draw.

“Having a dedicated Victorian wildcard is something we are all very proud of and I can’t wait to see who gets the chance to compete against the world’s best this year.”

A heat including two Rip Curl-sponsored surfers and single Victorian would determine the winner of the women’s trails, Robertson said.

He listed a series of “notable” local surfers competing in the trails, including Jan Juc’s Tim Stevenson, Jack Perry, Xavier Huxtable, Zoe Clarke and India Robinson, along with Bells Beach’s Cahill Bell-Warren and Barwon Heads’ Billy Harrison.

Stevenson, Perry, Bell-Warren and Clarke were previous trials winners, Robertson said.

Competition would begin at Bells on Sunday depending on surf conditions, he said.
