New homes heist A Pakenham man has been jailed for burgling a series of newly-constructed homes at least partly to clear a drug debt. Stefan James Lee, 29, was on bail and a community corrections order while he broke into homes in Pakenham in late February, a court heard. During two break-ins, Lee stole about $4000 of items such as door handles, door stops and power tools. Lee had been bailed by police on 1 December after being arrested for burgling two under-construction homes almost ready for
hand-over in an Officer estate. On those occasions in late November, he stole goods such as rangehoods, uninstalled LED downlights, a hotplate and drills. He told police at the time he stole to clear a drug debt, though he had no recollection of the second burglary. His fingerprints were found at both scenes. Lee also pleaded guilty to using stolen driver’s licences and Medicare cards to try to buy mobile phones online in January and February. Police found 19 items of mail addressed to other people at his home, as well as stolen identity and credit cards.
A defence lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 March that Lee relapsed into significant ice and amphetamine use after the overdose death of a former partner in 2016. During that time, he was unable to keep down his full-time job and “not in the best place” to engage with his CCO. Lee had previously breached the corrections order with non-compliance and ice possession. The lawyer said Lee - who appeared on a custody video-link at court - had insight and wanted to “turn things around” in residential rehab.
“It’s a long road,” the lawyer said. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said Lee’s latest offending on a CCO warranted jail time. He was jailed for two months followed by a treatment-focused community corrections order. The supervised 18-month order included judicial monitoring due to Lee’s high risk of reoffending, Ms O’Donnell said. Lee was ordered to complete 150 hours of voluntary work - which is wholly transferable with drug and mental health treatment. Ms O’Donnell warned Lee that any breach of the CCO would lead to a jail term.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk Home is a person’s bedrock. Yet a decade after homelessness was raised by then-PM Kevin Rudd, the issue remains an “obscenity”. Many arrive in the Casey growth corridor, but ever more numbers are not finding a place to call home. Without steady shelter, a person and a family’s ability to lead fulfilled lives is seriously hampered. But like a canary in the mineshaft, it points to more people teetering on the edge of homelessness. More people living in instability can only lead to a deepening of social problems. Stable accommodation is a key factor that courts look for when assessing an offender’s prospects. Without that, their life of crime and disconnect from the mainstream has less chance of correction. Homelessness can flow from a mix of bad luck and personal circumstances - good people lose jobs, lose a partner, need to flee family violence. There is a working underclass also that hasn’t suffered a dramatic swing in fortune, yet struggle to afford a home. We all know about rising house prices, the dwindling supplies of affordable housing stock are much described. Public housing stocks have not kept pace, emergency accommodation is stretched and boarding houses have a vexed reputation. The issue seems vast and complex. But remember, homeless people don’t deserve to be shunned. As pastor Keith Vethaak, who feeds and hundreds in hardship, it’s not necessarily their fault. - Cam Lucadou-Wells

Shining at the Show By Russell Bennett Build it, and they will come. Year after year, the Parklea Pakenham and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show brings local residents and visitors to the area to the PB Ronald Reserve in droves. And Saturday was no different, despite the hot, windy conditions on a day of total fire ban. Show society president Geoff Young told the News just how happy he was with the turnout, and the way the 2018 incarnation of the event had been received. "The crowds here are just fantastic," he said. "The show, personally for me, is a very big challenge, but to see it improve year after year and to get the young people involved and to see them enjoying it is absolutely fantastic. "It's an event that's free to the public but we've got severe fire danger on a total fire ban day, so to see so many people coming out is just fantastic." Mr Young said he now has a unique perspective on what the current day show means to visiting young families. "I had kids 30 years ago, and now we've got a grandchild we're actually bringing her along and I'm going around the Wally (the Wombat) trail, myself," he said. "To have a grandchild now to do these events, and have them be free, is just fantastic." For more on this year's Pakenham Show, pick up a copy of this week's Pakenham-Berwick Gazette, which has a complete, four-page rundown of all the excitement - including the show results.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Dianne Markham, Narre Warren SES volunteer.
1
Plan the school lunches. Ensuring your kids have healthy, filling lunches at school contributes to their well-being in a variety of ways. Not only will they be healthier, your kids will have improved concentration and stamina, and will generally be more comfortable both in the classroom and out.
2
Talk to your kids. With all the sorting and running around, it's easy to forget who's actually going to school and that they might be feeling some anxiety about it. Ask your kids how they're feeling about the new-year, what they're looking forward to (or not so much), and talk them through any worries they might have.
3
Clean and tidy the kids' rooms. In no way are we suggesting this is your job. Rather, encourage your kids to clean and tidy their rooms at least a week before going back to school. This should include creating a space to keep textbooks and sports gear and an appropriate environment to do homework, setting your kids up for an organised start to the year. Source: Lumo Energy

What is something people don't know about you? I got my own Honda Shadow motor bike and license when our children began to grow. We had always holidayed on our Honda Gold Wing 1500cc which had a double side car, where the children would sit and I as a pillion on the back of the bike. Plus we towed a Cub trailer. As they grew they wanted to change places with me. What was your most memorable moment? Becoming a grandparent 3. What's the best thing about being involved at Narre Warren SES? The gift of being able to help the community in so many ways with a great bunch of trained volunteers. What is your favorite book? Our children's photo album What got you to join up to the SES? I had been looking at numerous ways to volunteer over two years but nothing jumped out at me. You can't just Google "volunteers", it takes a lot of looking and then l found an information-night advertisement in the local paper for my local SES Narre Warren unit and went along. Three years later I'm still there. At school I......was involved in lots of sports If I was PM for a day I ....would make TV stations put regular little flash-card type awareness ads on the road rules. Many people drive but l don't think they know the rules. Little regular awareness prompts would teach people and make our roads safer. Also we would have less road rage due to people being less frustrated with others. Which 6 dinner guests dead or alive , would you invite to dinner? Clark Gable , Pink, Dean Martin, Sandra Bullock, Red Skelton, Lily Tomlin What is your favorite holiday spot ? Whereever my husband is. Best concert you have been to? Phantom of the Opera.

Sick trees plague streets By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council has no plans to remove scores of unpopular sickly gum trees that are shedding piles of leaves in hapless residents' gutters and lawns in a Berwick estate. The white-trunked trees, which line residential streets surrounding Parkhill Plaza, have been under back-to-back insect attack over the past 12 months. The insects have caused an abnormal dumping of leaves and appeared to have left white sticky spots on cars and other surfaces below. Resident Vic Beech in Wintersun Road has collected three bins full of shedded leaves from his lawn. He suspects the culprit insects are white lace lerp. Concerned by falling branches, he and his neighbours want the trees gone. "Our concern is what is the council going to do about it?" Carol Punteri believes the culprit insect is a white-lace lerp that sucks the sap - and life out of the trees. "It doesn't affect any of the other trees. It's just this species. "They're all on our nature strips creating a risk ... "After driving around the Parkhill area, you can see the disease is rampant." Karen Painter, in Silkwood Avenue, says residents have pressed for the trees' removal for years, blaming their roots for uplifting driveways and footpaths and blocking drains. "The answer's simple - just pull the trees out. "They should not have been planted here in the first place." Every day, Ms Painter washes the sticky secretion from her dogs' paws. Her complaints about the leaves clogging
Carol Punteri in front of the sickly avenue of gum trees. 178781_10 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS drains, killing grass nature-strips and creating a mess received no response from Casey, she says. However, without warning, the extensively-diseased gum tree in front of Ms Painter's place was removed by the council 12 months ago. Casey city presentation manager David Richardson said recent dry weather - with the insect infestation - exacerbated the "normal seasonal shedding" of native tree foliage.
"These infestations generally occur every four-five years and are dependent on a number of factors including climatic conditions." Mr Richardson said the council was treating and monitoring the trees - and performing "remedial maintenance as required". "The shedding of foliage, flowers, fruit, seeds or small elements of deadwood by urban trees is considered normal and not a basis for removal or intervention"

On a recent trip to the World Superbikes in Phillip Island our group had the good fortune of stopping at Cranbourne for breakfast. The food at The Atrium is sensational. This little restaurant is a gem. Who could imagine having a Michelin chef preparing the breakfast for us? I hope your readers appreciate his talents as much as we did. Eugene Cassar: About time Lucinda Tolmie: It isn't just this school. I think it is all school especially Narre Warren South P-12 College. They park in the side streets as well and up on the nature strips. This morning we were walking to school and the car instead of waiting in the traffic went up onto the nature strip to drop her child off. Right near the roundabout with lots of children around. More needs to be done. No standing signs mean nothing to some drivers. It means they park on the nature strip instead of the road. Aiden Coward: Stop building schools with no frigging parking. Hayley Anne Watts: Hahaha we were going to get the house on this street Jamie Sibbald: Need to take a trip to Lang Lang primary school can barely get out of my street every day and kids run out from blind spots everywhere one day a child will get hurt Tania Millar: Out the front of Fleetwood Primary is just as bad most days. Debra Kennedy: I live near a school and parents r crazy a child has been hit but nothing changed ; more people could walk too that would help Jmh Margarita Head: I cannot understand how they built the new Wilandra Rise PS, Clyde North YMCA and Selandra Kinder all in same site, with ONE road in and out! Why is there no road on the south side of school to feed traffic onto Heather grove? Cars now parking on both sides of Black-
ledge Dr, creating one way traffic only and blind corner at Haflinger Avenue intersection. Angela Davies: It's most schools in Casey Kay Bbk: I'm sure it's all schools with the same problem. Is there are so many children and not enough car parks. For pick up and drop off. Barbara J Burley: Common sense would have been whoever planned the location of these schools would have allowed for wider roads instead it's about the mighty dollar Naomi Mactaggart: This is every school in the south east cos there is no parking it's a joke Lisa Ambrose: Mossgiel Park Primary in Endeavour Hills. Parents at that school should hand their licences in. The parents who park in Gleneagles Drive are fantastic, but honestly... the parents who park in Scotsburn Way are an abomination. We have contacted local council, the school itself and local police. Nothing has changed. The most disrespectful, rude people I have encountered in the suburb. Mossgiel Park Primary has never taken any action that has influenced the behaviour of parents picking up students. Parents completely disregard common courtesy. Their children leave rubbish on lawns, run in front of traffic. Parents park in the bus stop of an already congested street. Parents ignore signage, and when confronted become abusive. Completely unfair to people who reside in the street. Karlie Gray: Cranbourne West is even worse-a whole section of Duff St and Monahans Rd becomes a parking lot and not to mention all the parents that decide to use and block up the service lanes (and driveways!!) close by to the school-instead of using the public parking across the road at the Coles carpark.
Thumbs down To the parking at Cranbourne station. There will be a head on down the private road with all of the people parking along the narrow road.
Thumbs down To the traffic congestion in all areas of Casey at peak hour is a disgrace.
Thumbs up: To all the CFA volleys that have given up their time, to join strike teams, to be sent far and wide in these terrible conditions. Also, the ones that stayed home to protect the locals.
Thumbs down To crime
Thumbs down To the amount of people that catch the buses and Don't have myki's. I counted nine people (all ages) on one journey from cranbourne park shopping centre to Casey central. Bus driver didn't say a word.

More lanes for Monash
FUN RUN SUNDAY 8 APRIL 2018 PAKENHAM RACECOURSE
The Monash Freeway will have on-road live updates between the South Gippsland Freeway and Beaconsfield from later this year. On Sunday 18 March, the State Government announced that the Monash Freeway Upgrade’s second stage would start earlier than expected. A $111 million saving from stage one will fund smart on-road technology that will give drivers live traffic information and manage lanes. The State Government also announced it had submitted the full business case for the rest of stage two to Infrastructure Australia for the Federal Government’s final approval. The project would expand the Monash from eight to 10 lanes between Warrigal Road and EastLink, and from four to six lanes between Clyde Road and Cardinia Road. The upgrade would save nine minutes off a peak hour trip between Pakenham and the city. Works would also include better connections at Beaconsfield and links to a new, duplicated O’Shea Road. This construction would start next year, following a tender process, and the new lanes would open in 2022. Stage one is to be completed later this year. Premier Daniel Andrews and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the $711 million second stage would create 600 jobs during construction. They said the business case would be made public as soon as the Federal Government approves it. “Adding more lanes where they’re needed most will slash congestion and deliver faster,
AN EXCLUSIVE CHANCE TO WALK OR RUN ROUND THE INSIDE OF THE RACECOURSE!
RUN 5KM OR 10KM The Monash Freeway. more reliable journeys from Chadstone right through to Pakenham,” Mr Donnellan said. La Trobe MP Jason Wood said that the second stage was made possible by a $500 million grant from the Federal Government. “We’re pleased the Andrews Labor Government has finally committed to this vitally important project - even if their announcement fails to acknowledge the Federal Government is funding most of it.” Mr Wood said it was “bizarre” that Mr Andrews described the stage-2 works as being fast-tracked. ”It’s a real shame that Victorians have been denied these vital upgrades for two years while the Andrews Labor Government has dragged the chain, despite Victorian and Commonwealth officials having held many months of discussions.” The Federal Government would assess the business case “as quickly as possible” so works could start, Mr Wood said.
Coward punch attack By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has coward-punched a "bully" who told him to pick up his cigarette butt at a Berwick pedestrian crossing, a court heard. Peter Carnevale refused to pick up his litter after the request from another pedestrian at the corner of High Street and Gloucester Avenue on 4 December, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Cameron Smithett told the court. After the exchange, the victim crossed the road and heard Carnevale mutter something behind him. The man was then punched to the cheek from behind, causing his tray of three coffees to spill on the ground. Carnevale then hurled one of the coffee cups at the victim. The accused told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 19 March that he'd been upset at the time by the recent death of his dog. He admitted to punching the victim.
"Apparently this bully approached me and asked me disrespectfully to 'pick it up'. "I said: 'Why are you telling me to pick it up?'" Carnevale told the court that it had been 16 years since his last violent offence. That's "not bad", he said. He submitted for a sentence of a fine or a donation, like his previous sentence. Magistrate Julie O'Donnell told Carnevale that unlawful assault carried a maximum of three months' jail. "You can't just assault random people on the street like this." When the judge raised concerns about Carnevale's risk of reoffending, he replied that he had martial arts experience. "You've assaulted someone here, not the other way around," Ms O'Donnell said. Carnevale was convicted and fined $1000.

Parrots warm up for winter A new aviary complex has been built at Moonlit Sanctuary to help the critically-endangered orange-bellied parrot survive in winter. Federal Member for Flinders Greg Hunt was pleased to announce Pearcedale's wildlife conservation park had been chosen to spearhead a project in protecting vulnerable Australian species. Every year the orange-bellied parrots migrate between Victoria and Tasmania. But a high proportion of wild-born first year parrots fail to complete their first migration. "With only 50 adults left in the wild, and around 350 adult birds in captivity, we need to increase the breeding population - every bird matters here," Mr Hunt said. He said the aviary, which was opened last week, would house first-year wild birds to protect them through winter. Due to its low numbers, the species was identified as requiring emergency interventions like capture and ranching, Mr Hunt said. "Using this technique, known as 'ranching', the birds will be released back into the wild population in Tasmania next summer, increasing the breeding population in 2018-19. "If successful, Zoos Victoria, Moonlit Sanctuary, the Tasmanian Government and the orange-bellied parrot recovery team will repeat the project in the next migration season." Park director Michael Johnson said the new $55,000 aviary complex also received funding from Zoos Victoria and was a great opportunity to breed more orange-bellied parrots. "They're already in the aviary which is great," he said. "Just an opportunity to make sure we keep some of important females over winter so they can be released back into the wild in Tasmania next spring for the summer breeding program." "We're in the natural habitat range of the orange-bellied parrot over winter so they'll have the same sort of climatic conditions, they'll have access to some of the same food
Could Casey Council be one of the first to dabble in cryptocurrencies? The council is set to investigate whether it will start to accept payments in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Councillor Sam Aziz said many “corporate players” had joined that particular “game”. It was worthwhile for Casey to be the first Australian council to explore such possibilities, and give more options for customers to transact with the council, he said.

Federal Minister for the Environment and Energy Josh Frydenberg, said the Coalition Government had spent more than $6 million for projects to support the parrot since 2014. "This includes multi-year emergency biosecurity measures, vaccination protocols for controlling pisttacine beak and feather disease - a key threat to the birds - and supporting recovery actions guided by the Orange-bellied Parrot Strategic Action Planning Group." The orange-bellied parrot is one of 20 birds targeted for recovery under the Threatened Species Strategy.

Community fundraiser for Leukaemia Foundation Hairhouse Warehouse at Cranbourne Park hosted a World’s Greatest Shave fundraising day where people had their hair shaved or coloured on Saturday, 17 March. All money raised will help fund research for the Leukaemia Foundation’s so more people survive blood cancers like lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma. One customer Amanda Smith who had long blonde plaits shaved her head to raise $1000. Two sisters aged six years old raised more than $500 by cutting their plaits while others raised $300. The store has hosted the event for the past 10 years - a cause staff hold dearly to their hearts. People of all ages either shaved or coloured their hair, cut pony tails, and shaved their beards. Owner Sophie Margaritis said the event once again showcased the outstanding community spirit with a generosity in helping others. “We thank the beautiful people who supported the great cause. Casey Council meetings have been getting off to tardy starts since moving into Bunjil Place late last year. Eggs thrown at home A Cranbourne woman has told her disgust after her home was allegedly egged by thugs on Thursday, 15th of March. Beth Roberts, who lives opposite J and P Camms Reserve said it was quite a “scary feeling” when she thought someone had initially smashed her windows at about 11.30pm. “Someone drove passed my house and splattered my front windows with eggs. They then came back five minutes later and screamed ‘How do you like those eggs?’ “ she posted on Casey Crime Page. “Unfortunately they had vanished so fast, we couldn’t get any information on what type of car they were driving or what the people looked like but I have contacted the police and they have put a report in.” “I don’t know if this was a targeted act or just something random,” she said. She said no damaged was caused to her home but added “The sound of the eggs hitting the window even woke my neighbour.” Cranbourne police are investigating.

Homeless crisis deepens By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey's growing tide of homelessness has swelled well over 1000, according to the latest statistics. There were about 1280 homeless in the municipality in the 2016 official Census period up by 33 per cent from 2011 figures. It soared by double the rate of Casey's population, while at the same time Victoria's homelessness rate remained steady. "That is incredible," says Keith Vethaak, who runs Transit Soup Kitchen in Narre Warren. If anything, the number would probably have grown since then, he says. Each week, his kitchen provides groceries and hot meals to about 1400 people, including the homeless and an underclass just hanging on to their homes. Ray Roberts, 57, dines at Transit. He and his hyper young dog Abby sleep on a single bed with blankets and an unzipped sleeping bag inside a van. They move between car parks in Dandenong, Narre Warren and Pakenham, meeting other long-term car dwellers in the South-East. "I regard myself as lucky, not even as homeless. "I'm lucky because I wouldn't want to sleep rough." He did that once in a Dandenong park about 20 years ago. He says he'd never do it again. Yet by the figures, there must be many who do sleep rough in Casey. Mr Roberts had boarded with a Doveton landlord. Overnight, he lost his shelter when the landlord died suddenly in bed. He'd lost work as a fruit-and-veg courier and couldn't afford the $400 weekly askingprice for a simple rental dwelling. "You don't take any notice (of the housing market).

He and Abby have been dependent on charities, while he trains in traffic worksite management. Mr Vethaak says cost of living pressures are crushing people. The kitchen has recently introduced a meal-time for families with schoolaged children. "It all boils down to a shortage of affordable housing." Mr Vethaak says more elderly people are

under housing stress, such as newly-widowed people whose household income halves with the loss of their partner. "We've got a few old people who we are trying to pair with someone else." During a sit-down dinner on 19 March, about seven new faces joined scores of others for a feed - as well as a free shower, haircut and laundry service. A young couple arrives with just 40 cents to their name and "nowhere else to go", Mr Vethaak said.
He gets on a microphone and welcomes the diners. "It's not your fault," he assures them. "Our society is messed up." Transit diner Rob, 45, volunteers at the kitchen about three days a week. "No one there judges you. You feel like a proper person for a while." While awaiting a WorkCover claim, he has slept in his car for the past 18 months. His make-shift home is now broken down, and rests in a Narre Warren car park. It has been broken into several times - with one attempt at stealing the pushbike in his car. "Who would steal off someone who lives in their car? "It's like stealing candy from a baby." Rob receives $500 fortnightly Centrelink benefits without rent assistance. The payments would barely cover the cost of a sharehouse. He is meanwhile paying off two personal loans to help out his adult kids. He is grateful to the care and understanding of Narre Warren police and Centrelink staff. Police check on his welfare, offer help and don't hassle him to move on. Philosophically he says he has to bide the "process". "You try to think it doesn't bother you but it does. You just try to keep positive. "Whatever the difficulties I'm going through, there's someone else worse." Another diner is Lisa, a disability support pensioner herself, who shelters four homeless people as well as six dogs and cats in her home. She hopes to save up for an acreage in Gippsland and offer it as a homeless refuge. "As a Christian, I just pray to ask God to bring the people you want to me. "You have to have an open heart."

Greyhounds seek homes Peninsula RSPCA shelter is hoping to see its personality-plus Greyhounds rehomed during a "50 Shades of Grey" adoption promotion this month. Around 30 Greyhounds will be available for adoption at RSPCA Victoria's Animal Care Centres for the reduced adoption fee of $50, from Monday March 19 through to Sunday March 25. RSPCA Victoria Animal Care Manager Liz Walker said each of the dogs had their own dis-
tinct personality. "We have excitable, attention-seeking Greys through to docile, shy gentle giants," Ms Walker said. Most of the Greyhounds available for adoption have completed the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) assessment, making them exempt from wearing a muzzle in public under current Victorian legislation. "We work in partnership with GAP to create
additional rehoming opportunities for Greyhounds and we are delighted that they have provided extra dogs to our adoption centres for this promotion," Ms Walker said. She said Greyhounds were intelligent, friendly dogs with a gentle and sensitive temperament. "They are well suited to a variety of different lifestyles and homes, which is why they continue to be one of our most popular dogs
among those adopting." "Although they are often bred for sprinting, many Greyhounds do not require excessive amounts of exercise and, after their regular walk and play time, will happily curl up in a comfy spot, often on their owner's couch." "We invite those interested in adopting a Greyhound to visit one of our centres during this promotion to meet their potential new family member," she said.

"Worried residents and staff at an early learning centre have called on VicRoads to avert a looming catastrophe on a 100km/h section of Wellington Road, Narre Warren East. "Nearly every day someone says an accident is waiting to happen," Little Joeys Learning Centre director Emma Robinson says. "When you're carrying precious cargo (children), you don't want to be taking chances." Two years ago, the centre and its 100-plus parents unsuccessfully petitioned for VicRoads to reduce the speed limit and install a right-hand turning lane into their centre. Parents and staff turning right off Wellington Road to access the centre are scared of being rammed from behind by eastbound traffic, Ms Robinson says. Drivers approach from behind on a rising bend and are blind to the stationary, turning cars. "I need to turn my indicator on around 200 metres before the Dorning Road turn-off," Ms Robinson said. "It is awful waiting for an opening knowing cars are approaching 100km/h on a single road behind me. I have my two daughters with me also." Ms Robinson argues that speeds should be reduced to 80 km/h - just like adjoining sections near Clematis to the east and a T-intersection at Berwick Road to the west. "I would also like to know how many fines people have 200 metres from this junction as there is a police officer with a camera there at times." Neighbours Tracey and John Wade moved to the area for a "tree change". They recently - and fruitlessly - wrote to VicRoads about the dangers posed by drivers that "fly down this stretch of road". "We have no service road entry to our property and I have had enough of being tail-gated,

abused, tooted at and (blinding) lights flashed at me for turning into my own driveway," Ms Wade says. Wildlife crossing the road, such as deer, kangaroos and wombats, pose a further risk to motorists, she said. In the five years up to 30 June, there was one recorded casualty on the 100km/h section - about 90 metres west of the Monash Road intersection. However across a wider section between Berwick Road and Clematis, there have been one fatality and four serious injuries since July 2014. Earlier this year, two cars collided in the road's 80km/h zone to the west, Ms Wade says. Eastern Victoria MP Edward O'Donohue asked in Parliament last month for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan to investigate the road's speed limit. "The needs of residents have to be heard and understood," Mr O'Donohue said. Monbulk Liberal candidate John Schurink said the road should be appropriately speedlimited in the "largely residential" area. As a former paramedic, he'd attended plenty of speed-related crashes on Wellington Road. "It beggars belief that this area remains 100km/h." VicRoads movement and safety regional manager Sasha Yarwood said the 100 km/h speed limit was assessed as consistent with other similar roads across the state. The factors for speed limit reduction include the number and types of vehicles, the number of access points, the road's environment, nearby speed zones and safety record. "We welcome all community input and we're happy to meet with residents and the early learning centre to discuss their concerns and explore any potential safety improvements."
By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 21-year-old Casey mother and drug user who pleaded guilty to her 21st stolen-car charge says she wants to be "clean" to reunite with her young son, Dandenong Magistrates' Court has heard. However, the hearing on 19 March highlighted the shortage of available residential rehab services. When the woman requested rehab, magistrate Jack Vandersteen retorted: "We will order it and it will not happen. "The reality is it is not there. "It requires your client to attend and depends on the availability of a centre - and unfortunately that's not something I've seen occur." The woman's lawyer proferred: "We can only live in hope." "More than hope," Mr Vandersteen replied. "Your client has to turn up." The woman, who was on her second com-
munity corrections order at the time, was charged over being a passenger in a stolen car on 4 July. The same car had been involved in a lengthy abandoned police pursuit that day, though it was not alleged she was part of the pursuit, prosecutor Senior Constable Aimee Ryland told the court. She had been found with 20 mL of GHB in her purse that she claimed to have bought at Sandown for $30 that day. When confronted with her criminal history, she told the court that she'd always been charged with car-stealing for simply being a passenger in stolen cars. The woman was placed on a fresh 12-month CCO with supervision, judicial monitoring, drug testing and mental health treatment. She was disqualified from driving for six months. "This is as close as you get to 'last throw of the dice'," Mr Vandersteen said. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Car break-in ‘alarming’

A Berwick man whose partner's car was broken into has spoken of his shock over the incident. The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said the car was parked on John Fisher Drive, Berwick where he found the passenger side window smashed at about 9.30am last Monday, 12 March. "They took my partner's entire purse so they have all her ID, everything...driver licence, banks cards," he said. "They took a bag which they thought had money but it was a bag of make-up." "They subsequently used her tap and pay debit card up at the Berwick Liquorland and Beaconsfield Liquorland." He said he believed the incident took place at about 6am last Monday morning as his brother heard a dog barking but "didn't think anything of it. "It was pretty alarming to be honest. I've lived in Casey since I was born. I never really thought that Berwick was the area where that sort of thing happens." "My partner was in tears, she was quite distraught." Adding to the frustration, he said he waited for eight hours until police arrived at his home to fingerprint the car. "We were told they (police) would be out shortly. Then we called four times. Then they finally came at 6pm, he said. "I don't know if there's a lack of money or lack of police actually on the ground. Eight hours is way too long." Narre Warren police are investigating. Constable Benedos said the fingerprints obtained from the car had not led to any possible suspects and there was no CCTV footage.

Prostate problems The prostate gland is an organ that lies at the base of the male bladder. As Urologist Philip McCahy of the Melbourne Urology Centre explained, prostate's "main functions are to produce semen and cause men trouble as they age." Mr McCahy explained there are three main groups of problems that urologists see with the prostate. These are inflammation, benign growths and cancer. "Inflammation of the prostate is called prostatitis and this can either be a very painful acute problem with fevers and difficulty passing urine or a more chronic problem with deep-seated pelvic pains," Mr McCahy said. "The former is often related to infections and treated with antibiotics, whilst the latter is less frequently associated with infections and can be difficult to adequately treat. Advice from a urologist is often required." Mr McCahy said that benign prostate growths are extremely common and cause the well-known symptoms of a poor urinary stream, frequent urination and getting up to urinate at night (nocturia). "Urinary tract infections and the complete inability to pass water (urinary retention) are also possible," Mr McCahy said. "GPs can prescribe alpha-blocker drugs which help to open up the bladder neck but these only improve symptoms by about 20%. So if the blockage is very bad they won't make much difference. "Urologists deal with these problems on a

Invisible braces, total care regular basis and I recommend assessment with a simple flow test and ultrasound scan of the bladder. If the flow is poor, operations can work very effectively. "The standard operation (TURP - often called a rebore) has been around for over 80 years. "There have been numerous attempts to improve on operations and most have not stood the test of time. Lasers can be used and may be particularly useful if the patient is taking blood thinning medicine. A novel staple type device can be used and may reduce some of the unwanted side-effects of the standard operations. "As always, I advise seeing an expert and, if thinking of an operation, consider a second opinion. Philip McCahy is also a Consultant Urologist at Casey Hospital in Berwick. Each patient is given personalised care from Dr Andy Ong at Elite Orthodontics at Narre Warren South. The focus of the clinic is to bring the latest and best advances in clinical orthodontics including braces to the Casey-Cardinia community. Staff aim to provide caring and experienced treatment by a registered Australasian Orthodontic Board-certified specialist orthodontist. The practice encourages parents to be chair-side during visits to allow treatment progress to be discussed in detail. Operating for the past six years in the Casey-Cardinia area, the practice offers a minimal waiting list and a scheduling policy which allows patients to start treatment when they want to. And patients only see one orthodontist with Dr Ong there from start to finish. Traditional metal braces, clear braces and even invisible lingual braces that are fitted

Green for premmies Every April the L’il Aussie Prems Foundation (LAPF) hosts Wear Green for Premmies Day to raise awareness and funds for the 25,000 premature babies born in Australia each year. The charity provides support and services to families of premature and sick newborns. This year Wear Green for Premmies Day will be on April 13 and local caregivers at St John of God Berwick Hospital will be adding a touch of green to their day in recognition of the premature babies born at their hospital each year. St John of God Berwick Hospital is well equipped to care for babies born from 34 weeks gestation and weighing at least 1700 grams. With its level three special care nursery and six consultant paediatricians working in rotation and on call 24 hours a day, parents can rest assured that their new baby will receive the specialised care they need when their child is born. Premature birth isn’t the only reason a baby might be admitted for specialised care. Breathing difficulties, jaundice, low blood sug-
ar levels or temperature instability could also require the expertise of the hospital’s highly trained medical staff. St John of God Berwick Hospital is a modern maternity unit with spacious, light-filled private rooms promoting calm, peace and well-being for expecting parents. The large ensuite facilities and in-built accommodation for partners, along with a spa bath available during and after delivery, will make giving birth feel more like a luxury hotel experience rather than a standard hospital stay. With a focus on access to fresh air and outdoor spaces, patients are treated to a balcony area where they can visit with friends and family while enjoying a daily happy hour with beverages and a variety of cakes, pastries, soft cheeses and biscuits. To find out more about maternity care at St John of God Berwick Hospital, visit www.sjog. org.au/maternity or call 8784 5000 to book a tour.

Hampton Park CFA's performance has been defended by the CFA after the brigade met its response time target just 37 per cent of the time. Acording to the October-December 2017 figures, the brigade attended 14 of 38 emergencies in its area within the eight-minute benchmark. However, the overall response - including by brigades in other areas - to Hampton Park emergencies were 71 per cent. A CFA spokesman said Hampton Park's results were "trending upwards". The compliance rate went up from 77.5 per
cent in 2014-15 to 84 per cent in 2016-17, he said. "Hampton Park is located in one of Melbourne's fastest growing corridors, however the compliance rates are trending up and show that the brigade is adapting to meet the challenges which accompany such growth" The spokesman said the data was being used to improve performance and to allocate resources. He said the brigade was supported by neighbouring stations, including a $2.58 million station opened in Carrum Downs on 18 March. "It will be an important asset to assist in the service delivery throughout the region."
Hillsmeade Primary School students celebrate the funding news.
Theatre in the playground Hillsmeade Primary School performers will soon grace the stage of an outdoor amphitheatre. The school received $150,000 from the State Government's School Pride and Sports Fund for the stage, which will be used for school concerts and assemblies. When built, the long-sought venue will also be available as a meeting space for the wider community, principal Jodie Bray said. "We believe this opportunity for funding towards our school and community use amphitheatre will make a big difference.
"Our very large primary school is working hard to ensure our school community has pride and confidence in our public school." Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley, who helped the school secure the funding. "Hillsmeade Primary School has had big plans for this amphitheatre for a long time and I'm so pleased to see them receive the funding they need." "The amphitheatre will be a great space for students to perform and practice, I'm looking forward to seeing their talents shine." pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Ben’s now a class clown By Casey Neill A Dandenong teacher-turned-comedian is on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival bill. Ben Tiff started stand-up just over four years ago. "That was just before my 40th birthday," he said. "It's just a passion that I've always had. I really dragged myself out of my comfort zone. The first time I did it I pretty much felt sick in the stomach. The second time I did it, it wasn't much better. For some silly reason I persisted." In his first full-length show, Tiff Upper Lip, Mr Tiff will cover his speed dating business succumbing to Tinder and uncovering an awkward family secret at a dinner party. "I still get nervous, but it does wonders for your confidence," he said. Mr Tiff is the head of English at the Narre Warren South Prep to 12 College. "Being in front of a captive audience every day such as a classroom really does help," he said. "My comedy has helped my teaching as well." He said he'd always been more of a writer than a class clown. "People who are funny socially don't make great comedians," he said. "I'm not very spontaneous. "I really like to write and craft my work until I get it just right. "There's a lot of work that goes into comedy that you don't see. "They say professionals should write an hour

"It's taken me four years and this is a showcase of my best work in 40 minutes." Friends and family will be in the audience to lend support. "It gets a bit frustrating sometimes because you often get asked to tell a joke," he said. "I feel extremely unfunny in those situations. "A lot of people are actually terrified that I'm going to write jokes about them." Mr Tiff would like to take his comedy "a bit further one day". "Whether it's just in the comedy clubs or whether it's by doing something a bit different," he said. Tiff Upper Lip is playing at 8pm from Friday 13 to Friday 20 April at the Kingston City Hall. St Kilda Comedy Club is producing the show. Visit www.comedyfestival.com.au for tickets.

Parking danger at school By Brendan Rees A Casey councillor has called for drivers to take safer action when parking at a Cranbourne East school before a child is injured. Cr Amanda Stapledon says parents and carers were parking unsafely during pick-up and drop-off times at Cranbourne East Primary School. “I’ve had a number of phone calls from really concerned residents,” said Cr Stapledon. “We’ve probably done all we can from a council perspective. It’s now about driving and parking behaviours.” “The parents are either double parking or they’re parking against driveways, their blocking the rubbish bins; all of those things,” she said. She said it was a dangerous situation for children, adding “We really want to educate people safely.” Cr Stapledon said she also held concerns about unsafe parking at Cranbourne East Secondary school however Cranbourne East Primary School faced a narrower road on Bowyer Avenue. “Here all these people dropping their kids off competing in a very small local road. It’s a bigger problem than anywhere else,” she said. “It’s all about the way people parking and disrespecting other people and not caring about the impact they’re having.” At a Casey council meeting on 6 March, Cr Stapledon moved a motion for council officers to meet with the principals of Cranbourne East Primary and Cranbourne East Secondary as well as the school council presidents and residents who have reported unsafe parking. Cr Stapledon said she felt sorry for residents whose homes faced Cranbourne East Primary as they are “forever being barraged by parked cars” during pick-up and drop-off times. She urged drivers: “Just think about others
when you plan your parking and make sure you’re doing it within the road laws.” Cr Stapledon took to Facebook, urging drivers to take safer precaution when parking at the school. A Facebook post from Roz Coles said no standing zones were constantly being used as parking spots. “The signs need to be changed to ‘kiss and drop off zone’ and it needs to be monitored,” she said her post. “Yes it is congested around schools, but if everyone did the right thing, and were more courteous, we would not have so many problems and complaints.” Another Facebook user, Ruby Zahalan said parking at Cranbourne East Primary School was a huge issue and at least another 80 parking spots were needed to reduce traffic congestion. “Every time there is a complaint we get police or council booking people for parking in the wrong places but does nothing to fix the problem of parking spaces. There is a huge vacant block of land which is being made a skate park but we need parking spaces,” she posted. A report will come back to council.

Proud Lions looking up By Nick Creely Pakenham senior football coach Ash Green fully understands where the club sits and how his side is perceived by those outside the four walls, but is confident the Lions can ruffle a few feathers this season. A focus on playing a brand of football to be proud of has been high on the agenda at Toomuc Reserve, and Green hopes his Lions will bring that to the table in their season opener against Tooradin-Dalmore on 7 April. “We’ll play hard footy and our pressure will be high, we also like to think we’ll gain more consistency; we’ll take risks, chances and hopefully be more disciplined,” he said. “We hope that when you play Pakenham, you get a tough contest. “And as long as guys enjoy each other’s company that really helps as well.” Green believes the list is shaping up nicely, with the addition of the likes of Joe-Baker Thomas, Jay Jay Peni and James Harrison helping the club recover from the loss of some key personnel, but is careful on placing too much expectation on his group. “(Joe) has been really good; he’s been in the AFL system for four years, and we got his future brother in law Jay Jay Peni, who was on The Recruit, and we have James Harrison from Berwick too; we wanted to recruit younger guys, and locals if we could, so they’re probably the three we are looking too; what we now have is better depth,” he said. “But we’re still getting to know quite a few of the new guys; number wise, we’re getting more than 40 at training, and we’ve had a solid preseason like all the other clubs too; we know where we need to be, and we’re not quite there yet, but we’ll continue to work hard at training. “We’re under no illusions that we have a lot
Squishees set to take on the best By Hayley Wildes Floorball is a rapidly-moving sport that at times can be absolutely brutal. That’s all part of the fun for five locals who have been selected to represent Australia at the U19 Floorball World Cup. Emily Noney, Annie Lean, Abbey Luttrell, Hannah-Rose Humble and Maddison Berry are all members of the Pakenham ‘Squishees’ Floorball Club and will be heading to Switzerland in May to represent their country. The selection process included a training camp in January, which saw the best U19 female floorball players in the country all come together in Sydney to showcase their skills. The five all stood out from the crowd and were selected into the final squad of 15 players. When they all began playing, some years ago and others more recently, they never thought they’d be representing their country on the international stage - it was all about making friends and the tight-knit community that is the Pakenham Floorball Club. Before the World Cup kicks off on May 2nd, the team will first head to Finland for a training camp from the 21st of April. There are two divisions and four groups in the World Championships. Australia are in Group C of Division B - pitted against Austria, USA and Latvia. Their first game is against Austria on the first day of competition. The Pakenham Squishees are celebrating their 20 year anniversary in 2018 and with so much talent coming through the ranks, it is clear that floorball has never been stronger in Pakenham. If you are interested in joining Pakenham Floorball Club - no experience necessary - or would like to find out more, please contact the club via; info@pakenhamfloorball.org.au pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au
Stephen Morey (left), Chris Cardona and coach Ash Green are Pakenham's leaders for 2018. 178943 of work to do, but we’ve had a really good preseason; we’ve started recruiting after our last game, because it’s a really good standard of football we don’t want the Beaconsfield’s and the Berwick’s to drop to our level, we want to improve to match it with those sides. “We’ve lost some quality players, but we like to think we’re in a position to replace those guys going forward.” The Lions are a stunningly successful club, having 30 senior premiership etched into its
history, something not lost on the ambitious Green, who hopes his club can bounce back from a tough period. “We want success, we want premierships, but all the other sides are saying the same thing; we want to improve, and we can only control ourselves; Pakenham’s a successful club, and we want to be successful and work hard to get there,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to be involved in the premiership back in 2000, and the tradi-

Pakenham's Big V season tips off By Hayley Wildes and Russell Bennett The Pakenham Warriors' Big V season tipped off over the weekend and, again boasting three teams in 2018; Division Two Men, Youth League Two Men and Youth League Two Women, there's plenty to look forward for the campaign ahead. The Division Two Men, looking to go one better than their grand final berth in 2017, got off to a heartbreaking start to their season. Trading baskets in a scrappy, cobwebclearing affair against the Southern Peninsula Sharks on Saturday night, the Warriors had strong contributions across the board, including from Jordan Jacotine (14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals) and Brad Bridgewater (6 points and 12 rebounds) off the bench. Trailing by six points with under a minute remaining, Pakenham picked up the defence and managed to even the scores (59-59) with eight seconds left on the clock. Then, amidst all of the madness, Sharks captain Corey Bond kept his cool and drained the game-winning triple from well beyond the three-point line. Pakenham had a Hail Mary attempt at the buzzer but it wasn't to be as the Warriors fell agonisingly short of a dramatic comeback win. The Warriors then lost their home opener on Sunday against Camberwell, 79-71. Brent Russell's side still has plenty to work on, but there's enormous upside within the group. Their rebounding and shot selection, for example, are bound to see marked improvements in the coming weeks - as is their ability to limit careless turnovers. In Youth League Two Men, meanwhile, the Warriors were beaten by the Frankston Blues in their season-opener. Despite the best efforts from Aaron Miles (22 points) and Nathan Dodgson (15 points, 5 rebounds), the Blues had too many contributors as they ran out 7971 winners. The Pakenham Youth League Two Women, also taking on Frankston, got their season off to a winning start with a dramatic two-point win. It was the 'Ellie Coutts Show' as the Warriors' star stuffed the stat sheet - as she so of-

Coutts dominated all game and when it mattered most, she drained two clutch freethrows to give the Warriors a 57-55 win. Thursday, 22 March, 2018

Demons’ heartbreak
Xavier has X-factor By Hayley Wildes There is a star in the making at Pakenham Little Athletics. His name is Xavier Ladbrook. Xavier's uncle, Mark Ladbrook, represented Australia at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and it's fair to say nine-year-old Xavier has the perfect person ask advice of and to learn from. Mark competed in the 400m and 4 x 400m relay - making the semi-final of the relay event. He was also the 400m National Champion in 1996. When asked why he started Little Athletics, Xavier - who hails from Tynong North - highlighted his uncle. "[I started Little Athletics] because my uncle did - he was an Olympian and he did the 400m." Xavier said. He may have started Little Athletics due to the inspiration of his uncle, but he keeps going back for other reasons. "Making friends, high jump and the running - I like the long distance; 800m." Xavier said. As it turns out, Mark Ladbrook may have some competition in the future from Xavier in regards to being the best athlete in the family. Earlier this month, at the 2018 Little Athletics Victoria State Track & Field Championships, Xavier blew away the competition in high jump and long jump - taking home gold medals in both U9 events. In high jump, his favourite event, Xavier not only won gold; he broke the U9 state record. Jumping 130cm high, he broke the previous record by 3cm - with his nearest rival on the day a whopping 15cms (115cm) behind him. Just as impressive was his performance in the long jump. Prior to the Championships, Xavier's personal best was 4.11m; he managed to claim gold with a jump of 4.3m - smashing his previous personal best by 19cm.

Breaking records isn't anything new for Xavier - he is the holder of roughly a dozen records at Pakenham Little Athletics! He holds records in 100m, long jump, high jump and
1100m in varying age groups from U6-U9s. With Xavier appearing to possess unlimited bounce, the sky is the limit for this Pakenham Little Athletics star.
AFL WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 7 In just 90 seconds, Melbourne went from grand final-bound to heartbreak. The Dogs booked themselves a grand final spot against Brisbane after the AFLW's leading goalkicker Brooke Lochland wheeled onto her left to sink a classy, match winning goal that put them two points ahead with only seconds to play, 5.3 (33) to 4.7 (31). Now Melbourne will have to rue another costly, wasted opportunity that ends their season in the cruellest of fashion. With the northerly wind at VU Whitten Oval, the Demons were unable to capitalize in those two quarters, and it ultimately cost them the game despite having periods of dominance through Karen Paxman, who played a superb game for the visitors. In a clash that was a genuine struggle, the Demons were down one on the bench for virtually the entire match, with star midfielder Sarah Lampard suffering a knee injury in the first term, but looked to have the wood over the highly fancied Dogs before Lochland kicked the sealer. “(I’m) shattered, extremely disappointed for the group, they put so much work into it; from our program’s point of view, we’d like to think they’re worthy of another week in this competition,” Demons coach Mick Stinear said post-match. “You’ve got to win games, and we couldn’t do that.” Stinear was full of praise for the Dogs’ ability to keep coming at them, but lamented on some defensive errors by his side late in the game. With the Dees not qualifying for the grand final after again being one of the fancied sides, Stinear said they will work on some key areas that halted them this season.
Massive turnout on Labour Day PAKENHAM GOLF Pakenham had a massive turnout for its Labour Day competition last week, with some equally massive scores. Terry Bull won A Grade with 42 points on a countback from Jim Dimtsas. Kel Trickey has been dominating the competitions since his move from Beaconhills, and Labour Day was no exception. He had 44 points to beat Mike Popof on 41 points. Matt Hogan and Tim Pratt won with their Scratchie tickets. Mike Popof recently won the McQualter Knockout Matchplay competition by defeating Harry Elyasie 2&1 with Harry throwing everything he had at Mike and finishing his round with 44 points. On Wednesday last week the Midweek Medal winner for the month was decided as Richard Murphy with 44 points, ahead of John Pattison on 43 points. Ron Carroll won B Grade with 42 points
