Crime’s big drop "Crime has dropped dramatically in Greater Dandenong over the past 12 months, latest figures show.

The Crime Statistics Agency released data for last year on Thursday 15 March.

It showed a 12 per cent drop in recorded offences for Greater Dandenong, equating to a 14 per cent drop per 100,000 population.

Greater Dandenong Local Area Commander Inspector Mark Langhorn said everything was tracking well for the municipality.

"I think the community is feeling a bit safer out there," he said.

"That's not something that we can rest on.

"There's plenty of room for more reductions.

"Our focus is still on preention and being proactive.

"The community has a role in that.

"If they're suspicious about something or concerned about something, call triple-zero or call their local station.

Insp Langhorn said the drop in crime statewide was the biggest since 1994 and the third quarter in a row there'd been a decrease.

He said the downward turn in Greater Dandenong followed a decrease for the same period the previous year, and there were reductions in all suburbs.

"Noble Park was fairly consistent with only

about 50 less offences for the year," he said.

"There's been some bigger drops across Dandenong as a whole.

"We'll continue to focus on trying to reduce the crimes against the person category.

"That's our major focus - assaults and robberies, things like that."

Raw offences in that category increased from 3153 to 3244.

"The offences category that hurts us the most is theft," he said.

The number of thefts did decrease, from 6567 raw offences to 5442, but the rate per 100,000 population grew from 524.6 to 837.8.

Burglary and break and enter crimes dropped from 2033 incidents to 1349 - the low-

est level in at least 10 years.

Insp Langhorn said that property crimes still made up the bulk of the statistics.

"Of the 11,414 (per 100,000 population) over 9000 are property related offences," he said.

He said some success had come from targeting recidivist offenders using enforcement tools around bail and curfews.

"And we've got a very strong focus on drugs across the whole division, being Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia.

"With that focus, that's having an impact on some of those related type-crimes.

"That's where some of the greater gains are coming from."

Five-storey towers get the green light Lexington Gardens is growing up.

Greater Dandenong Councillors approved three five-storey unit blocks plus nine villas at the Springvale aged care village at their Tuesday 13 March meeting.

The Lend Lease development will total 105 independent living units.

Cr Zaynoun Melhem said there were concerns about the applicant's request to cut parking spaces.

"From the surveys that have been done in that retirement village it's generally one car per household," he said.

He said there was also a bus to the shopping centre and train station, and a car-sharing service.

"We want to support retirement villages and business coming into Dandenong and we need a place for our elderly residents to live," he said.

Cr Melhem said the council refused a permit for one five-storey building at Lexington Gardens in July last year, and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) overturned the decision.

He said the tribunal also removed conditions the council had put in place during the permit process.

"We actually made it worse for ourselves by taking it to VCAT," he said.

"There's no point in taking something where it's just going to get overturned.

"This is one of the biggest development companies in Australia and they're building a really good product."

He said many of the units had three bedrooms.

"What retirees get a three-bedroom unit these days?" he said.

"Not many.

"I think residents will benefit from this development."

Cr Sean O'Reilly said councillors needed to use their judgement on applications like this.

"We shouldn't be blocking these sorts of things which we know are needed because we think a bunch of car parking spaces should be built, which will just sit empty," he said.

"Residents of retirement villages do not use cars as much as other residents.

"They are not running children to school.

"They are not out and about going to work.

"They do not have the same car parking requirement."

But Cr Kirwan opposed the application.

"I don't agree with the visitor parking space parking reduction but that is not my main

problem with this application," he said.

"I don't support this application as it contains three five storey buildings.

"Basically we are putting three more five storey buildings in an area of poor public transport, completely contrary to all our council strategies.

"Five storey apartment buildings are designed to be next to places like Springvale Railway Station - not a 20-minute walk away in a public transport black hole poorly served by buses making it difficult for visitors."

Cr Kirwan said the council report also treated the recent VCAT decision "as some sort of precedent".

"While I understand the legal requirement for us to consider recent VCAT decisions - considering does not mean agreeing," he said.

"We are comparing a development of three five-storey buildings with a development of one five-storey building.

"This would be a folly for our council to support."

Cr Maria Sampey said the city was ageing.

"I support this because I really think we need more residential living in the city and nursing homes, it's lacking," she said.

The council received no objections to the proposal.

Torched car smokes out Plaza shoppers

By Casey Neill Police and CFA crews evacuated Dandenong Plaza shoppers after a stolen car was torched in the car park.

Firefighters received reports of a car on fire in the undercover car park about 6.05am on Wednesday 14 March.

Casey CIU Detective Senior Constable Peter Warden said the black Kia was stolen during an aggravated burglary in Narre Warren North about 5.15am on Tuesday 13 March.

He said the car also had stolen plates on it.

Det Sen Const Warden said the investigation was continuing.

Dandenong Plaza centre manager Mark Tannahill said the shopping centre was assisting Victoria Police with its investigation.

"While the situation is unfortunate, we are thankful that nobody was injured in the process," he said.

"We commend the quick response provided by our security team and local emergency services to diffuse the situation and evacuate the centre in a timely and safe manner."

Police are appealing for help to find the burglars who struck a Dandenong factory.

They said two men entered the Hammond Road site about 2am on Monday 5 March.

The duo allegedly stole seven televisions and a jet-ski before fleeing the scene in a silver single cab tray ute, similar to a Nissan Patrol.

Police saw the vehicle heading north on Hammond Road and tried to intercept it, but the driver sped away.

Officers initiated a pursuit but quickly terminated it for safety reasons.

The vehicle was last seen heading west on Greens Road and no arrests have yet been made.

Police released images of a vehicle in the hope someone might be able to provide information on the driver's identity.

A scrubland fire at Coomoora Road Reserve in Springvale has been brought under control with 13 firefighting vehicles.

At about 1.15am firefighters were called to the reserve with reports of a scrub and grassland fire, today (Monday, 12 March). The fire was brought under control at 1.51pm.

A CFA spokeswoman said nine CFA trucks from Springvale, Dandenong, Hallam, and Keysborough responded to the fire and crews remained on scene to mop up with the support of four MFB vehicles.

There was no threat to homes or people, she said.

The fire was called through to emergency services as a 50 by 50 metre grass fire. An update on how far the fire had spread was unknown at this stage.

CFA issued an advice message at 2.23pm for the Springvale South, Braeside, Clayton South, Dingley Village, Keysborough, Noble Park, and Springvale areas, stating there was no threat to communities, but people should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions.

The cause was yet to be determined and a fire investigator has been organised to attend the scene.

Springvale CFA fire brigade station officer Blake Ross said 30 firefighters were at the scene, adding "There's still going to be smoke and CFA crews in the area for a period of time."

Police and ambulance were also at the scene.

A man armed with a box-cutter has grabbed a female store attendant during a robbery in broad daylight on 13 March, police say.

The man jumped the counter and demanded cash from the Leonard Avenue, Noble Park, store’s till about 8.50am.

He fled on foot, with money from the till.

The victim was uninjured.

The man is described as aged in his early 40’s with short, straight, black hair and dark eyes.

He was wearing a black leather jacket, black pants and sneakers.

100 years ago 21 March 1918

50 years ago 19 March 1968

Collision at Dandenong Station On Saturday evening, at the Dandenong station yard, a collision occurred, and it is indeed fortunate that no deaths resulted from the mishap.

The engine of the 6.30pm train from Melbourne usually "cuts off" on arrival at No 2 road for water, and did so on Saturday evening.

Upon arrival of the 6.50pm milk train from Berwick, the driver was given the signal for No 2 road, where the train from Korumburra was standing at the platform, and of course crashed into the carriages which contained passengers.

Fortunately the train was not travelling fast but there was great commotion, several windows being smashed and luggage lying about in confusion.

Dr Langley attended to the injured.

A farewell for Dr A Oldham Former league footballer and family doctor, Alfred Oldham, has completed 41 years of service to the community of Dandenong.

Dr Oldham, who has retired from his practice at the Murray House Clinic in Scott Street, Dandenong, was born in Tasmania in 1899.

He left Tasmania in 1918 to attend Ormond College Melbourne University.

In 1922 he was signed up by Melbourne Football Club and played with them for a year, unfortunately a leg injury ended his football career.

At the completion of his studies he was on the staff of Fairfield Hospital, then spent a year in Queensland and later became superintendent of the Devon Hospital in Latrobe, Tasmania.

He arrived in Dandenong in 1926 to take

control of the Murray Hospital as the clinic was then known.

Dr Oldham was joined by Dr Ian Hart in 1930.

They began a partnership which was to last for almost 40 years.

20 years ago 16 March 1998 Couple overdose in car A man and woman were found slumped in their car after overdosing on heroin while their two-year-old played in the back.

The couple were revived on the spot and both they and the child, who was suffering from dehydration, were taken to Monash Medical Centre.

Detectives from a special operation underway in the Springvale shopping district made the discovery.

5 years ago 18 March 2013 Life's hard but still serving Single mother Gloria Anderson, a volunteer chef, and about 84,000 single parents like her have been on the receiving end of a $60 a week cut from the Federal Government.

Charities such as Dandenong-based Avocare report a growing number of single parents moved onto less generous Newstart benefits in January pleading for material help.

Ms Anderson has not joined that queue, but says life is undeniably tighter.

There's less to spend on groceries and on her two primary school-aged sons.

Even so, three days a week she cooks free hot lunches for about 100 diners at charity Cornerstone Contact Centre.

She is paid for 15 hours a week and volunteers at least 15 more.

Treasured Turner did well What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s best-known street and location names.

This week the Journal looks at W J Turner Reserve in Noble Park North.

City of Greater Dandenong Living Treasure Wal Turner was born in Oakleigh in 1919, the first of eight children of Alf and Daisy Turner.

His father was a cattle dealer and drover and in 1927 the family moved to a dairy farm on Halton Road, Dandenong.

The Greater Dandenong area was central to Wal’s life from that point until his death in 2010.

Wal left school at age 14 to work in market gardening, initially for Jack Baines and then for Mr and Mrs Les Lawrence.

He met his wife, Joyce, in 1939 and at the end of the war they bought 17 acres of market

Wal earned a reputation for producing fine vegetables, particularly celery, and until he sold his farm in 1967 regularly made early morning trips into the Victoria Market.

His work with the Dandenong Show committee stemmed from this time and remained a keen interest in his later years.

Wal worked for McEwans as a foreman in

Wal Turner. their Clayton warehouse for 16 years, until he retired in 1984.

In 1973, the desire to improve the inadequate educational facilities in the Dandenong North area motivated Wal to stand for council.

He anticipated staying for just one threeyear term but instead continued to serve until 1994, including two terms as mayor.

He was a dedicated councillor and became a member of countless, varied committees and organisations.

He saw this as the duty and role of a good local government representative and took enormous pleasure from being able to serve the community and help to develop its facilities.

Wal especially remembered his work with the Dandenong/Springvale Water Board, Dandenong TAFE, the Pillars of Freedom project, Dandenong and District Benevolent Society, Heritage Hill, Dandenong North Senior Citizens’ Club and the Jan Wilson Community Centre.

Gender diversity on track

By Casey Neill "Even as an award-winning manufacturing engineer, Anne Koopman worries about the impact that starting a family will have on her career.

She was a guest speaker at the Australasian Railway Association Women In Rail Luncheon at RACV City Club on Thursday 15 March.

The event followed following International Women's Day on Thursday 8 March and attracted about 400 guests, up from 300 last year.

Ms Koopman was last year's Victorian Young Manufacturer of the Year and is head of quality and LEAN manufacturing at Dandenong's Bombardier Transportation Australia.

She's pregnant with her first child and will start parental leave in June, and said she was starting to worry about what the time out will mean for her career.

Ms Koopman also spoke about some of her male mentors.

"They gave me the push I sometimes needed to put my hand up for the next challenge," she said.

She said men applied for jobs when they believed they met 60 per cent of the criteria.

For women, it's 80 per cent.

"We need to equip women with the confidence," she said.

Bombardier's Loulou Hammad told the event that she started in the industry three and a half years ago.

At her first ARA event, "I was really overwhelmed by the lack of female representation in the room".

Then she met TrackSAFE executive director Naomi Frauenfelder, who helped her forge connections.

"I now see more women at these types of events," she said.

"When you see role models that look like you..."

Ms Hammad officially launched Bombardier's #leadwithme campaign, to encourage

women in leadership within the organisation.

Bombardier hopes to expand the project to other organisations.

Ms Hammad said the aim was to attract more women to the rail industry, and to support the women who are already there.

ARA chair Bob Herbert launched the organisation's gender diversity report card.

"The rail industry has identified a base on which to build," he said.

The report found that 21 per cent of the Australasian rail workforce were women.

Mr Herbert said this was up from 17 per cent four years ago.

"I believe we are making some quite good progress," he said.

He said that 30 per cent of new appointments were women, and women received 33 per cent of promotions.

But of 113,710 active rail industry worker card holders, only eight per cent are female.

"That's a challenge for all of us," he said.

"Making genuine progress is the responsibility of each individual company.

"The buck stops with you."

Diversity Council of Australia CEO Lisa Annese spoke about increasing workplace gender diversity as a win-win proposition.

"Men gain when women gain," she said.

In relation to quotas, she said people should challenge comments relating to merit as it was a biased selection method defined by the group that was in charge.

Transdev Australasia CEO Rene Lalande is a Male Champion of Change.

"It's important to have male voices taking part," he said.

"Being a Male Champion of Change is about stepping up beside women."

He said gender equality was crucial for the future of the rail industry, so it could attract the brightest people.

"We need to disrupt the status quo," he said.

Cash splash into sports Access to the National Water Sports Centre in Bangholme is getting a $3 million boost.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio, Mordialloc MP Tim Richardson and Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny at Melbourne Cable Park on Wednesday 14 March to announce the project.

“This is a great area but it could be so much more,” Mr Andrews said.

The cash will support sealing the access road, improving the Carrum Lilydale Bike Trail, creating a new walking track under the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and building a new recreational building.

These were key priorities from the Patterson River Concept Plan.

The works might also include removing old buildings and infrastructure, creating new pathways, and better security lighting and signage.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning is going through feedback from more than 900 locals to create a draft plan for developing the area.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with the response by the community and this will help inform the final plan to be released later this year,” Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny said.

The River End Business Community has been campaigning for upgrades to the area for years.

In June 2016 the group told the Journal that the tax revenue they would generate from new wages alone would more than pay for the roads, public transport connections and footpaths they needed.

The precinct includes Craft and Co Farm,

Cornish College, Nine Dragons Horse Club and Melbourne Cable Park.

Spokesman Ian Clark from Melbourne Cable Park said the businesses were privately funded and none were seeking any government assistance with their specific business operations.

Mr Clark said there were no footpaths, public transport links or bicycle access in the area, and drainage was poor.

He said students, tourists and workers could only access the area by car.

“Road safety issues are reaching a point were an accident is almost inevitable because of the failing road surfaces and edges of the road,” he said.

“The road is increasingly being used as a shortcut to avoid EastLink tolls. Traffic levels are growing significantly.”

Family fun is here

By Casey Neill A family fun day in Noble Park North will support sick kids this Good Friday.

Cathy Mortimer-Maher and husband Tony hope to top the $10,000 they raised for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal last year.

Staff will donate their time to run the event at Lollipops Noble Park and neighbouring Crazy Climb from 9am to 5pm on Friday 30 March.

Cash from entry, cafe sales, raffles, silent auctions and a tin rattle will all go to the appeal.

"At Crazy Climb we'll be running climbing sessions every 30 minutes and it's $10 for 30 minutes," Ms Mortimer-Maher said.

"If people come in with their wallets open, we're happy to take their money for a good cause."

The couple has raised $45,000 over the past five years, first at Lollipops Forest Hill and then at the Noble Park play centre.

"I've actually been doing the phone room

at the Good Friday Appeal, this will be my 23rd appeal this year," Ms Mortimer-Maher said.

"Once we actually owned our own business we decided we wanted to do something different to carry on that tradition."

She's not sure what initially drew her to take part in the appeal.

"I wanted to do something to help people," she said.

"We've had a lot of family, friends and customers who have obviously been touched by the hospital.

"They're not always happy stories, but most of the time they are.

"If we can help to make the hospital better for these kids, that's what we're doing to do."

The Mortimer-Mahers have "two healthy kids which we're blessed with" and they'll be helping out on the day.

Abbey, 13, ran the cake stall last year and Grant, 8, will lend a hand this year as well.

Celebrated and on show - it’s called She Annual exhibition She is celebrating women in Greater Dandenong.

The show is in its 20th year and features the work of six emerging female artists.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said the exhibition was "an opportunity to celebrate their talents and give them a launching pad as they embark on their careers after study".

"She 2018 also coincides with International Women's Day so it is a true celebration of women and the significant contribution they continue to make to our world," he said.

Monash University graduate Susan Pover makes sculptures that are a form of prosthesis.

She explores how they make life more difficult rather than easier.

She will take part in the Dandenong Arts Series at Dandenong Library and host free painting workshops on Tuesday 20 March from 6.30pm to 8pm.

She will be on display at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre in Dandenong until Thursday 29 March.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 5pm and Saturdays, 11am to 3pm.

Drug drivers, drink drivers and speeding drivers felt the force of Greater Dandenong's road police during the Labour Day long weekend.

None of the state's six fatalities occurred in the municipality - which was one of Victoria Police's priority areas as part of Operation Arid.

However a 19-year-old female passenger died in hospital on Saturday after a car crashed into a truck on Boundary Road in Carrum Downs about 7.30am on 9 March.

Six drink drivers, three drug drivers and 83 speeding offences were detected in Greater Dandenong during the 9-12 March operation.

In total there were 180 offences, including disqualified driving, disobeying traffic signals, seatbelt and mobile phone offences.

No vehicles were impounded.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer described "how disappointing" it was that six people were killed on Victorian roads - including five on country thoroughfares.

"Six families ripped apart and no one seems to care except for those six families.

"Our focus on high risk user groups and country roads will remain strong."

Statewide, more than 500 drink and drug drivers and more than 3000 speeding drivers were caught.

Asst Comm Fryer was concerned that drug driver numbers were up from last year's operation.

"These are people who were warned that police would be in force and still they wanted to run the gauntlet."

Asst Comm Fryer said police blitzes on the roads weren't for revenue raising.

"It's around educating good people to change their driving behaviour ... It's about saving lives."

Trilagy’s trax finding fans

By Casey Neill A Hallam singer-songwriter-producer's debut EP is "blowing up online".

Terence, AKA Trilagy, launched five-track release Where I'm At at the Lions Club summer festival at Burden Park, Springvale South, on Saturday 17 February.

"As Trilagy it's my first EP," he said.

"I've had a lot of singles and things of that nature but ... I haven't had one body of work with several tracks.

"I've had a lot of positive feedback.

"I get a lot of inboxes on Instagram and Facebook.

"People are loving it so far, as far as I can tell."

He said his writing process was usually very quick, "but I took a bit more time with this".

"It developed over five to six months I would say," he said.

"I did other things on the side, and work.

"I was taking my time and I was coming back to it."

Trilagy hopes to produce more music with an RNB flavour and play more shows.

"I've always just wanted my music to get to a bigger audience," he said.

"You have to continue to grind.

"Until you crack a certain plateau, people just aren't going to hear about you."

He was born in the UK to Mauritian parents before moving to Australia.

"My mum was a singer back in Mauritius," he said.

"We always just had music around.

"I think just being influenced by Michael Jackson and Prince and artists like that, I started writing at 10, 11 years old.

"I used to write stories at school and stuff too."

He sees this as his third phase as an artist, "like a third instalment of a movie", hence the name Trilagy.

"I was bored with Terence. It just sort of came about," he said.

He hopes the EP will lead him onto an album.

"My family were pretty stoked when I told them but we haven't done anything to celebrate yet - we're waiting for it to sink in first.

"Once it's finalised I'm sure we will think of something!"

The winner plans to pay off her mortgage first.

"We've already booked a holiday to the United States so maybe we could make it a bit more luxurious or extend it a bit I think," she said.

She bought the 18-game QuickPick from Palm Plaza Lotto.

Owner Sineth Sar was thrilled that the winner had come forward.

"I'm so happy they have claimed the prize," she said.

"All of my customers have been asking if anyone has claimed it and we've been wondering where they are."

The world is on his plate The seventh annual Dandenong World Fare is expected to bring 38,000 people to Dandenong Market.

The Sunday 25 March event is part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival program.

More than 50 food trucks and street stalls will make the fare the biggest yet and capture Greater Dandenong's multicultural community on a plate.

Senor BBQ will serve up Argentinian flavours, with char grilled chorizo, chicken and beef ribs.

Belgium will be represented at Let's Waffle and Shake, Tibetan steamed dumplings will be on the menu at Himalaya Tibetan Tent and Melbourne Paella Company will serve up the Spanish classic.

Sansan's Dumpling House will serve traditional dumplings and Chinese buns and Flamin Skewers has traditional Cambodian street barbecue with lamb and beef.

From 10am to 4pm there'll be live music, dancing and kids' activities.

Flamenco and Brazilian dancers in traditional costume will take the stage, as will Bollywood-dressed performers and African drummers and dancers.

Free henna and moko face and body art will be on offer.

There'll be carnival rides, jumping castles and face painting.

Dandenong Market general manager Jennifer Hibbs said the World Fare was the perfect place for the whole family to tuck into a global feast.

"Dandenong Market is a melting pot of so many cultures and the fare gives people the opportunity to experience food from every corner of the globe," she said.

"Visitors can start their global journey with a taste of Turkish kebabs from Fat Kebabs, then Jamaican food from Boss Man Food and finish up with an Uruguayan steak sandwich from El Chivi.

"To satisfy their sweet tooth, they can then indulge in some fairy floss from the Sweet Factory and of course, a donut from Dandee Donuts."

GEELONG LEADS GROWTH PROXIMITY to Melbourne combined with quality amenities and infrastructure saw Greater Geelong dominate the list of top annual growth areas in 2017.

The latest REIV data shows the Geelong suburb of Norlane recorded the state’s highest annual growth in 2017 with its median house price increasing 28.8 per cent to $305,000. This was up from $236,750 in December 2016.

Nearby Corio also recorded significant growth of 24.4 per cent over the year, boosting the suburb’s median house price to $311,000 in December - a capital gain of more than $60,000.

prices rose by more than $100,000 over the year to a median of $645,000.

House prices also rose strongly in Geelong West and Herne Hill last year, both increasing by more than 20 per cent in 2017 to median prices of $665,000 and $492,500 respectively.

Other Greater Geelong areas benefitting from increased buyer demand last year include Hamlyn Heights, up 18.1 per cent to a median of $506,000; Clifton Springs, up 17.8 per cent to a median of $430,000; Bell Post Hill, up 17.2 per cent to a median of $440,000 and Belmont, up 16.7 per cent to a median house price of $502,000.

Keeping it all in order Urologist Philip McCahy often gets asked what urologists actually do.

Once he has clarified that no, he does not deal with brains and nerves (which he says often happens), he explains that his work actually involves looking after the body’s “waterworks".

“Basically, urologists deal with the surgical aspects of the urinary system - kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostates in men, urethra, and the male sexual organs,” Mr McCahy said.

“This covers a lot of ground including urinary tract stones ... urinary infections, continence issues and cancer of the various organs.

“Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosed in men, and cancers of the bladder and kidneys are amongst the top 10 cancers diagnosed in either sex.”

Mr McCahy explained that the good news about most of these cancers is that they generally have a good prognosis (unlike cancers such as stomach and oesophagus), but they must be diagnosed early and be under expert urological review.

“There are also highly specialised areas such as paediatric urology, surgical reconstruction following major surgery, gender reassignment or inherited conditions and the treatment of erectile dysfunction and infertility,” Mr McCahy said.

“Urologists are probably in the best position to perform vasectomies, and certainly the best surgeons to perform vasectomy reversal.”

Green for Premmies Day Every April the L’il Aussie Prems Foundation (LAPF) hosts Wear Green for Premmies Day to raise awareness and funds for the 25,000 premature babies born in Australia each year.

The charity provides support and services to families of premature and sick newborns.

This year Wear Green for Premmies Day will be on April 13 and local caregivers at St John of God Berwick Hospital will be adding a touch of green to their day in recognition of the premature babies born at their hospital each year.

St John of God Berwick Hospital is well equipped to care for babies born from 34 weeks gestation and weighing at least 1700 grams.

With its level three special care nursery and six consultant paediatricians working in rotation and on call 24 hours a day, parents can rest assured that their new baby will receive the specialised care they need when their child is born.

Premature birth isn’t the only reason a baby might be admitted for specialised care.

Breathing difficulties, jaundice, low blood sugar levels or temperature instability could also require the expertise of the hospital’s highly trained medical staff.

Gully silence the Thunder

By Nick Creely Dandenong Thunder’s tough arrival back into the top flight of NPL soccer continued on Saturday night, with a slick Green Gully SC coming from behind to win 1-2 at George Andrews Reserve.

Having lost their first three matches of the season, the pressure was well and truly on Andy Vargas’ squad to open their account with a win in front of their home fans, who have been unable to see the Thunder’s best football in opening month.

It was all Thunder early, with the majority of attack played in the home side’s half, and after Brandon Barnes’ curler outside the box was saved by a diving Lucas Spinella, recruit Hamish Millar found the back of the net in the 15th minute to have the home crowd roaring with excitement However, it was short lived momentum, with Gully striker Kieran Dover slamming the ball into the bottom left of the net on a tight angle, equalizing the score in the 27th minute.

The Thunder defended admirably until half time, and were perhaps lucky to have the score equal, with the Gully unable to capitalize on a period of dominance, having several near misses after some impressive buildup’s.

In a tense and entertaining second half, both sides needed a spark.

It was the Gully that found a way through the Thunder defenses to find the winner, with Alex Caniglia tucking the ball into the left hand corner in the 86th minute, eventually handing them a 2-1 win despite conceding the opening goal.

Sitting last on the NPL table and with plenty of issues defending, the Thunder will look to bounce back when they travel to The Grange Reserve to play Kingston City FC on Monday

In NPL2 East action, Dandenong City toasted another solid victory and sit top of the table, after breezing past Moreland City in the second half last Friday night at Frank Holohan Soccer Complex.

With both sides enjoying strong starts to the

season, and Moreland City being in top notch form in their attacking half, it was always going to be a tough encounter.

The first half; as expected; was a tough grind.

Both sides were unable to capitalize and score a goal, and remained 0-0 at half time.

The City host Eastern Lions at home once again on Friday 23 March, as they look to continue on with their momentum.

Saint David blessed in Launching Pad

By Mick Floyd Enigmatic speedster Saint David set the time standard in the heats of the $410,000 Group 2 Launching Pad at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

Resuming after a 10-week lay-off, Saint David took full advantage of the inside draw to rail strongly at the first turn and race to five length victory in 29.39 - an identical time to which he ran to break his maiden in September last year.

His win was the first leg of a winning double for trainer Robert Britton, who also led home Slingshot Gypsy which recorded victory in 29.64.

The much-hyped New South Wales chaser Beast Unleashed continues to live up to his reputation as one of the country’s most exciting young chasers by recording the biggest victory of the series so far, defeating West Australian visitor Waterloo Monelli by eight-andthree-quarter lengths in 29.43.

The win was his fifth in six career starts and third in a row at Sandown Park, leading all of the way in each.

Owner Brendan Wheeler had two heat winners, Dyna Patty taking out the night’s opening heat in 29.45.

That was followed by Australian Cup finalist Dyna Forrest saluting in the night’s penultimate heat in 29.86.

Navajo Bear ($21.70) and Especial Shiraz ($27.20) scored upsets in their respective heats, while Come On Emmaline rounded out the heats with an impressive all of the way win in 29.59.

Peter Knott was over the moon in the wake of the win by Especial Shiraz - the only greyhound in his kennel.

He began well to lead and, although pressured late by Payton and She’s Gifted, he was able to hold on by one-and-three-quarter lengths in 29.62 at a big price of $27.

“It’s just brilliant,” said Knott proudly.

“We’re only a small kennel so to be through to the next stage of a series like this is fantastic.”

Especial Shiraz is the sole racing greyhound in Knott’s Carnegie kennel. He raced the dam Especially, which had 73 starts for 20 wins. She produced a litter of seven, which are all owned

by Knott.

The Launching Pad is Australia’s only sweepstakes event. There were 64 places available in the series which each sold for $2000 each and is open to greyhounds with 1-6 wins and no more than 30 starts. The first four place getters in each heat progress to this Thursday night’s semi-finals, with the remaining runners contesting the consolation series.

The Launching Pad final will be run on Thursday 29 March and coincides with the club’s popular Easter Kids Fun Night.

DDCA’s best of the best thrashed out DDCA reporter NICK CREELY has chosen his DDCA Turf 1 Team of the Year from the 2017/18 home and away season: Ian Daniel (Mordialloc) - 12 matches, 736 runs, HS 171, 22 wickets, BB 3/26 The Bloodhounds all-rounder put in a sublime home and away season. Daniel is well known for producing some extraordinary performances, and his 171 in Round 7 against Dingley, as well as his brutal 114 against Cranbourne late in the season, were just unbelievable.

Daniel Watson (Buckley Ridges) - 11 matches, 683 runs, HS 130, 16 wickets, BB 4/19 The most destructive player in the DDCA, DJ had his most prolific year at the Bucks, and it was his consistency that stood out. In 21 innings for the season (including Twenty20's), DJ made double figures 20 times, including two centuries and five half centuries.

Leigh Booth (Hallam Kalora Park) - 11 matches, 533 runs, HS 109, 7 wickets, BB 4/15 Booth was a beacon of consistency for the Hawks, notching up over 500 runs opening the batting. His three game stretch of 109, 106 and 106 was simply sublime, and while he only scored one more fifty for the season, he always shielded the middle order by making a handy start.

Kaushyla Gajasinghe (St Mary's, captain) - 10 matches, 372 runs, HS 86, 31 wickets, BB 6/30 A high profile recruit, Gajasinghe led the Saints brilliantly throughout the season, and even had the Turf 2 premiers in a finals position at one stage. Always battled hard with the bat in the top four, but it was his brilliant spin bowling that was eye catching.

Michael Davies (Heinz Southern Districts) - 11 matches, 468 runs, HS 73, 35 wickets, BB 6/10 The champion all-rounder; now Wookey winner; probably fell under the radar slightly this season, but it was his finest year to date as a Cobra, and it was capped off with the top gong in the association.The leading wickettaker of the Turf 1 season.

Steven Spoljaric (Springvale South) - 11 matches, 423 runs, HS 62, 26 wickets, BB 7/20 It doesn't matter where the five time Wookey winner plays, he will always deliver. Spoljaric, while not as dominant as other years, has played a major hand in getting the Bloods into the grand final.

Nathan Pilon (Berwick, keeper) - 11 matches, 404 runs, HS 69, 24 catches, 3 stumpings A really classy season from the former first class cricketer, with Pilon carving out his best season with the bat and gloves for the Bears.

Really found his way late in the year with the bat, but his glovework was terrific all season, and was sometimes the difference in matches.

Malinga Bandara (Springvale South) - 11 matches, 102 runs, HS 37, 27 wickets, BB 5/13

Dees are primed and ready for it

Steve Spoljaric was named in the side after another sublime year. 175032 Returning to the club this season, Bandara was superb, bowling countless overs and always providing the breakthrough. Started his finals campaign with a mind boggling 7/29 against Buckley Ridges, and will be a major factor on Carroll Reserve in the grand final.

James Wilcock (Berwick) - 11 matches, 152 runs, HS 56, 34 wickets, BB 7/9 What a season it was for the former Premier quick, who finally found his niche at Turf 1 level. Wilcock produced some outstanding spells of bowling, and his 7/9 against HSD earlier in the season was one of the finest performances in Turf 1 cricket for years.

Peter Atkinson (Dandenong West) - 10 matches, 65 runs, 28 wickets, BB 4/18 The veteran Wester had an outstanding season, and was extremely consistent all season for the improved side. The Westers have a lot of youth, and Atkinson complemented them perfectly all season, taking almost three wickets per match.

Jarryd Straker (Springvale South) - 11 matches, 7 runs, 26 wickets, BB 7/41 The other spinner at the Bloods, Straker had a barnstorming start to the season, taking 16 wickets in his first three matches. Quietened down after that, but still consistently took wickets in tandem with Bandara.

Make no mistake about it, 2018 looms as a massive year for Springvale Districts.

The Dees are gearing up to make a splash this season, after a tough season of close losses in 2017 saw them finish second last in Southern Football League Division 2.

President Sean Francis explained that 2017 was a steep, while painful learning curve for his young and developing club, but something that is driving them to greater heights.

"We had a bit of a tough year last year, we were really competitive and we lost a bunch of close games and finished second last; the league decided to relegate us, so it was very disappointing," he said.

"We tried everything we could to stay up, but the rules are the rules; we've never played Division 3 before, and we'd like to think we'll do pretty well.

"The past two years, our average age is anywhere between 21 and 23, and we had a couple of older blokes, and we've been quite inexperienced; our guys have started to take their footy a bit more seriously, and we had a lot of recruits last year, and they'll take time to gel together.

"When you're losing games by a goal, you just need to find that extra 10 per cent from somewhere."

Francis said that with a band of new recruits, such as George Angelopoulos, Sam Raru, Jared Henshaw and Nathan Brown, as well as a full year under coach Kris Thompson, the vibe around the club is pure excitement ahead of a massive Good Friday clash against competition newcomers Hampton Park to kick off the season.

"It's been a learning curve, we've recruited well and everyone's on board; we have a full year under Kris Thompson, and we're hoping to get the results on the board," he said.

"It's definitely an unknown, it's our first venture into Div 3, and the way the league is set up now with an extra division means it's going to be a lot more competitive all round.

We think it's (Good Friday match) a really good chance for us a club to push our brand, and the league as well; it's a standalone game for the league, and it's a great chance to get a few people watching and get some bums on seats.

"Hampton Park are an unknown; they've had a well-documented rough trot of recent times, and their hopes are high as well; we don't really know much about them, and they probably don't know much about us.

Patto on board for juniors - with skills

By Daniel Lane When Dandenong's James Pattinson was named an 'official ambassador for Australian cricket's new junior formats' he was adamant that the modified game would ultimately enjoy the reputation as a breeding ground for international cricketers.

Pattinson and fellow Aussie cricket star, Elyse Villani, were both honoured to be named as the faces for the junior formats Levels 1 and 2 that are being rolled out across the nation.

Pattinson, who is on the comeback trail from a back injury, described them as a perfect stepping stone for any child with aspirations to wear the green and gold.

"I think this format could potentially, definitely make people into Test cricketers," he said. "Getting involved at a younger age, giving them more opportunities all helps towards the end goal for a lot of these kids."

Pattinson and Villani revealed the reason they'd accepted their roles was because of the changes that were made to junior cricket for children aged between nine and 12 after a successful, nation-wide pilot program during the 2016/17 summer.

The junior formats Levels 1 and 2 are being rolled out across Australia after the data from the pilot - which was compiled from 6126 innings - found such things as a 43 percent increase in runs off the bat; 66 percent more boundaries; a 35 percent decrease in wides and sundries and a 53 percent surge in balls that were bowled on a good length.

"What excites me most about the junior formats is the amount of fun that the kids are having," he said. "I've been down to a couple of games and seen the amount of fun they're getting from actually getting a bowl, and batting for longer periods of time."

a shorter pitch and on grounds with smaller boundaries and less fielders than traditional 11-a-side matches. Pattinson believes the formats provide every child with the opportunity to enjoy a much greater engagement with the game than previous generations.

"I think the big thing with this game is it gives you confidence to do well," he said. "I've seen a lot of kids running around and saying, 'I've got three or four wickets', and 'I've smacked a four'. They're things that, maybe, if they were playing a different format of the game, that they wouldn't get.

"The shorter pitches and grounds also mean there is a lot of room for the fielders to run around and to get their hands on the ball.

I'm really pleased young kids can come along and you see that it's obvious they're happy and having fun."

Burras are on a mission

"We've put together a senior training squad, and that is about 35 players, so we're really well placed; we have plenty of players ready to play seniors, and it helps the depth of the club," he said.

Rangers get set to shine

By Nick Creely Basketball Victoria has announced the four teams set to represent Victoria Country and Victoria Metropolitan at the Australian Under-16 Junior Championships, with four Dandenong players selected among those squads.

The Championships will be held at the University of Sunshine Coast Stadium and Caloundra Stadium on the Sunshine Coast, after the four sides were put through a rigorous try-out process through the Victorian Under-16 State Combined Combine on Saturday 10 March.

In the Victoria Metropolitan Boys side, Dandenong youngsters Jyelin Moli, Jermore Pierre and Marcus Windhager have all been selected in the side coached by Dom Linossier.

Lionssier is excited by the defensive prowess of his assembled squad, and believes its flexibility across the board is their major asset.

"We've picked an extremely versatile team -

the squad is capable across multiple positions, and they've got a fantastic passion for the Big V," Linossier said.

"It's really been fantastic to watch the rising skill level of the players over the last few years.

"This year's combine has seen players show off their talents in a myriad of ways and the under-16 boys will be an extremely competitive tournament, so we are very much looking forward to taking it to the best from around the country."

There was one more Dandenong selection from the four sides, with Hailey Merrigan selected as an emergency for the Victoria Metropolitan Girls, in a great reward for the young star.

In terms of coaching staff, Dandenong's Mike McHugh has been named as the Associate Head Coach of the Victorian Country Under-16 Boys.

"There will be some new guys in there, but a lot of the guys last year played a lot of footy together, so there will be some headaches in the coaches' room every week, that's for sure."

The Burras kick off their 2018 campaign with a big clash against Mount Waverley at Keysborough Reserve.

Keysborough are determined to be hard to play against, and have a hunger that they believe can help get them back into the premiership window.

The Burras; who finished second on the Division 2 ladder in 2017; fell flat in its preliminary final against Murrumbeena, and are a side on a mission as the 2018 season draws closer with each day.

"We learnt a fair few lessons out of last year's finals series, and we went away from probably what made us a successful side throughout the year; I think the focus (this year) is playing a brand of footy that hopefully sustains through a finals series, but we've got to earn that right," Burras coach Matt Ferguson said.

"It's more of a motivator (the loss), rather than a downer for us; we're very hungry and in this competition, you have to be up every week; we won't have September on our mind until we get to a stage where we qualify."

The Burras list is shaping up to be one of the strongest in the competition, with some high quality recruits in James Anwyl, Aaron Mcllroy, Matthew Carnelley, Damian Collins and Bailey Wardle the perfect complement to the likes of champions Ryan Goodes, Chris Bryan and Michael Downie, as well as the awaited return of forward Dylan Carlsson.

"Anwyl has fitted in like he's been around for a decade, he's an amazing defender, and a good leader which is fantastic; Mcllroy has been super impressive, Damian Collins from Narre will be one of our starting midfielders, and we've had a couple of Under-19's that are looking ready for senior footy," Ferguson said.

"And we've got Michael Downie back from injury, and he's our captain, and Dylan Carlsson, who is back after having brain surgery, so they're two quality players to inject back in our side."
