Operation bikie backlash

Angry social media users have told police to instead focus on actual crime, such as home invasions.

Soul-brother shih tzus Benji and Zac joined council officer Mark Stevens on Wednesday as City Hall promoted a program teaching children about responsible pet ownership.

Council has hired a staff member to teach the program in schools as part of its new domestic animal management plan.

Mayor Bruce Harwood said community education was a key focus of the plan.

“If we can get the majority of people doing the right thing most of the time it will greatly reduce the likelihood of conflict and issues,” he said.

Benji, 9, and Zac, 10, met Mr Stevens, the program’s coordinator, at East Geelong's Howard Glover Reserve as they searched for a new home together.

make perfect lapdogs, according to Geelong Animal Welfare Society’s Renee Renshaw “They came together as what we call a bonded pair and we’d like them to be rehomed together,” she said.

The quiet, calm and relaxed pair of Shih Tzus were de-sexed and looking for a new owner to love, Ms Renshaw said.

“They’d suit an older person or a quiet home that enjoys short walks.”

Council developed the school program in response to community feedback, a spokesperson said.

“It means local children and youths will gain an understanding of how to be responsible pet owners from an early age.”

Council will also investigate building more enclosed dog parks around the region.

Greater Geelong’s only existing enclosed dog park is at Stead Park, Corio.

‘Sexist’ bike plans suit well-off males

By Luke Voogt Council’s plans for bike paths in Belmont's High Street are sexist, ageist and elitist, according to a Grovedale health economist.

Katrina Alford this week joined the chorus High Street traders saying council’s plans to remove car parks would disadvantage the elderly, small businesses and families.

“The bike project will achieve few net benefits, other than for mainly male, young-ish cyclists to commute from well-paid jobs in (central) Geelong and (City) Hall.”

Dr Alford dismissed council’s claims its planned Principle Bike Network would benefit “cyclists of a wide range of ages and abilities”.

“In fact, only 1.1 per cent of Geelong workers cycle to work and they are not all ages and abilities,” she said.

Census figures indidated that more than three quarters of bike riders were males, most

on above-average incomes, Dr Alford said.

Half of them were managers and professionals in their late 20s to mid-30s, she said.

“Most older people, women and families with dependent children do not have the luxury, circumstances or capacity to switch from cars to (cycling) to work.”

The bike lanes were “bad policy” given 94 per cent of Belmont residents commute to work by vehicle, she said.

“Local female traders in Belmont are devastated by the Bike project.

“They will no longer be able to drive to drop off kids to school before work and shop for family necessities after work.

“Trade will be diverted to the already crowded and congested Waurn Ponds shopping precinct.”

The portfolios, which council’s former administrators scrapped over perceived conflictof-interest risks, would allow councillors to “advocate and champion strategic issues and progress outcomes for the benefit of the community”, mayor Bruce Harwood said.

‘Rare’ misreport A police officer “errantly” recorded an alleged Connewarre home invasion as a less-serious burglary despite the property owner suffering injuries during the incident, according to force command.

Victoria Police explained the mistake as “rare error” after coalition MPs publicly questioned whether it indicated deliberate fudging of crime statistics in a state election year.

Residents unsettled over disease science

By Luke Voogt Lara goat farm objectors have raised concerns about links between the proponent and local scientists who have described disease risks to the community as "quite small".

No Nuchev campaign member Michelle MacNaughtan queried John Stenos and Stephen Graves' claims in last week's Indy about the proposed farm’s Q fever risk.

In January Nuchev, the company behind the farm, received a $97,280 Federal Government grant for goat vaccines, which listed Prof Stenos and Prof Graves’ Australian Rickettsial Reference Laboratory as a co-recipient.

Prof Stenos last week disclosed to the Indy he had worked for Nuchev but failed to mention the grant.

“If they have a commercial relationship with Nuchev why would they think it's appropriate to make public comment on this?” Ms MacNaughtan asked.

She said the “intensive” farm could cause a “significant outbreak“ of Q fever, which humans can contract from goats and other animals.

Acute Q fever can progress to pneumonia, while the chronic version can also kill.

Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last year rejected Nuchev’s planned 14,000goat farm for Moorabool due to risk management plans for the site.

The tribunal raised concerns about the site being 2km from a primary school and less than 3km from dwellings.

The tribunal considered evidence from the Netherlands, which had 4026 human cases of Q fever between 2007 and 2010, suggesting that people within 2km of affected farms were at greater risk.

The Lara proposal was about 1km from a primary school, 580m from dwellings and 400m from a playground under construction, Ms MacNaughton said.

“I'd never let my child play there.”

Nuchev wanted to profit from Chinese's lucrative infant product market, Ms MacNaughton said.

“But it shouldn’t be at the expense of Lara children’s safety.”

Ms MacNaughton questioned Nuchev’s risk management plan for Lara, given the Moorabool decision.

“I cannot help thinking that (Q fever) could be coming into my house and into my little girl’s life,” she said.

She disputed Prof Graves' suggestion Nuchev could provide human vaccines to Lara residents.

“Everything you read says children cannot be vaccinated,” she said.

“Why should I have my child vaccinated with something that’s unapproved for children so an inappropriate development can go ahead?”

Blame game rages over Land 400 loss

By Luke Voogt Geelong has lost up to 60 jobs after the Federal Government awarded a $5 billion defence contract to Queensland instead of Victoria.

State Industry and Employment Minister Ben Carroll described the decision as a "betrayal" of regional Victoria.

"This is a disgraceful decision that's based on the political interests of Malcolm Turnbull and his desperation to cling to marginal seats in Queensland," Mr Carroll said.

But local coalition MP Simon Ramsay, while critical of the Commonwealth, blamed the government's "sloppy lobbying".

"The Andrews Government fiddled and diddled and ultimately muddled this major opportunity for Victorian jobs and manufacturing," the Member for Western Victoria said.

Prime Minister Turnbull on Wednesday announced Rheinmetall had won the Land 400 Phase 2 tender, over BAE Systems.

The company will build the Australian Army's next generation of combat reconnaissance vehicles in Queensland.

As part of its Victorian bid, BAE announced in November Marand would manufacture components of its vehicles in Geelong, creating 60 jobs.

The lack of Victorians on the National Security Committee influenced Federal Government's final decision, Mr Carroll said.

Mr Ramsay agreed the "politics" of the security committee "won the day" but said the Victorian Government "had much to answer for" after its lobbying "fail".

“The person who is in charge of bookings is away until Saturday,” the manager said.

Geelong’s Caleb Vines must be hoping that history repeats as he counts down the days until The Wizard of Oz’s stage production premieres in Melbourne.

The bright young talent has scored a gig as understudy for the role as Scarecrow - coincidentally the first character his grandmother ever played on stage as a youngster!

So along with history repeating, our Caleb could be forgiven for musing on another familiar saying, this one particular to the world of theatre, while watching Eli Cooper rehearse the role.

Sacked Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons should consider covering Twist in St Tropez, the 1978 hit of French early-techno band Telex.

Although perhaps he could retitle it Bitter and Twisted in St Tropez, given his Twitter feed while visiting Europe recently.

Not even the sophisticated delights of the Mediterranean playground for the rich and famous could free his mind completely of the Andrews Government, which famously ousted Daz and the rest of his council in 2016.

Indeed, he was travelling globally but thinking locally with ongoing invective for the government’s perceived shortcomings, particularly in relation to rail services and crime.

Twist in St Tropez? Well, in Darryn’s mind, possibly the neck of a certain Premier at least!

Organisers of Easter’s Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach appear to have taken a leaf out of the book of road cycling races such as the local Cadel Evans ride.

This year the famous surfing event will include “live sites” around the shire for watching the action on big screens at venues such as cafes, bars, restores and stores. Even Winchelsea gets a screen!

While lacking the atmosphere of the real thing, the sites will at least provide a viable option to the annual vehicle queue for entry, sometimes snaking back kilometres to the Great Ocean Road.

And this year, with Australian three-time world champion Mick Fanning retiring from competitive surfing at Bells, the queue’s likely to be longer than ever.

So pull up a chair and enjoy the action, hopefully without getting wiped out at the licensed venues!

Court ‘frees’ servo bandit

A Geelong woman who held up a Grovedale service station with a toy gun has avoided jail after turning her life around.

Judge Irene Lawson sentenced the woman to 100 hours of community service after she pleaded guilty in County Court last month to armed robbery.

The court heard that the 32-year-old told an attendant she had a weapon in her pocket when she entered the BP service station about 7.40am on 2 July 2017.

The woman told the man she did not want to use the weapon and to put money in a bag she placed on the counter.

She apologised as she left the store, the court heard.

Police arrested her as she hid behind a nearby dumpster, finding a toy gun in her possession.

The woman was staying on a couch at a friend’s place before committing the robbery, Judge Lawson said.

“You took a toy gun from your friend’s place, as well as the bag, and then walked to the nearby service station where you committed the offence.

“You now accept that what you did was a stupid and desperate act that has had adverse outcomes for the store.”

The woman cried as she read the store attendant’s victim statement, which detailed how the event made him fearful and paranoid.

“He, for days after, did not feel comfort-

able entering his place of work,” Judge Lawson said.

“Ultimately, he took some personal leave with consequential loss of income.”

But the woman had made “exemplary” efforts to beat her drug and alcohol addiction since the robbery, volunteering for intensive rehabilitation in Melbourne, the judge said.

“I accept that you have achieved abstinence from alcohol and drugs and that you are committed to remaining drug-free,” she said.

The woman’s history of substance abuse, including amphetamines, began at age 16, Judge Lawson said.

In 2017 the woman began using heroin and broke up from a highly-dysfunctional and drug-focussed de facto relationship.

Judge Lawson acknowledged the woman’s parents had separated and that her mother had committed suicide when the woman was 20.

She also acknowledged the woman’s past efforts to seek treatment for her drug use and depression.

The maximum penalty for armed robbery is 15 year’s prison, but Judge Lawson said the woman offended “at the lower end of the scale” and had no criminal history.

She was on her way to reformation following her participation in the Court Integrated Services Program, Judge Lawson said.

MPs clash over dole work Work for the Dole, Ms Henderson said.

“The best form of welfare is a job," she said.

"Unlike the Labor party, the coalition is committed to getting people off welfare and into work.”

About 30 per cent of jobseekers who completed Work for the Dole found employment in three months, according to Federal Government statistics.

“Work for the Dole ensures taxpayers are not subsidising a lifetime of welfare but are instead preparing people to get, and stay in, a job,” Ms Henderson said.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson called on Corio counterpart Richard Marles to back the program, which had “benefited” 1572 people in both their electorates combined.

Ms Henderson’s call followed shadow employment services minister Ed Husic’s recent refusal to guarantee the program after labelling it a failure.

“Labor’s failure to commit to work for the dole is frankly not good enough,” Ms Henderson said.

Since the 2016 federal election 382 and 1145 residents of the region's Corangamite and Corio electorates respectively had participated in

But Mr Marles hit back, lambasting Ms Henderson for her government’s axing of Labor’s Geelong industry fund.

“You know what people in Corio need more than Work for the Dole? Jobs - real jobs,” the Labor MP said.

The previous Labor government’s $29.5 million Geelong Regional Industry and Investment Fund (GRIIF) created 890 full time jobs in Geelong, Mr Marles said.

“Work for the dole numbers go up when real jobs fall. That’s exactly what’s happened because the Liberals axed GRIIF. "Sarah should be ashamed of herself.“

Shed-load of cash for men Thirty-three Queenscliff Men’s Shed members will share more than $ 1 million dollars after their syndicate won Saturday night’s lottery.

The private syndicate shared the division one prize with two other entries then had a pair of wins in division six for a total prize haul of $1,326,203.89, or $40,188.83 each.

The syndicate leader was flabbergasted when a lotto official phoned to tell him the result on Monday morning.

“Bloody hell! Excuse my French,” the man laughed as the news sunk in.

“Fair dinkum? Let me write that number down.

“Am I allowed to panic? Just fantastic! How much was it again?

“I’m in a syndicate with a few of us from the Men’s Shed. That’s fantastic! That’s brilliant!

Thank you.”

The syndicate leader said he was just happy to share the prize with his friends and looked forward to sharing the news.

“I think I’m just going to enjoy the moment for now,” he said.

“It’s good though - it’s great to share it with 33 people. They’ll be very happy.

“We’ve been going in together for a long time and every time I go in to the Men’s Shed they always ask me ‘How did we go?’ and I tell them ‘It would be nice if you ask me how I am first!’

“We’ll celebrate nicely, I’m sure there will be a big presentation here.

“I think I’ll call them today - I’ll call one and get them to spread the news around.”

The syndicate purchased the winning entry from Drysdale Lotto.

The Indy spoke to two members of the Men’s Shed, who wished to remain anonymous until the syndicate leader had sorted out the winnings.

A snake big enough to eat a “small dog“ slithered through Whittington last month before local residents cornered it outside Splashdown Leisure Centre.

The residents caught the two-and-a-half metre boa constrictor on a nature strip on Coppards Road across from the pool on 24 February.

St Albans Park resident Jason Picone pulled over when he spotted the boa to protect it from being run over.

“When I first spotted it, it virtually stretched from one side of the road to the other,“ he said.

“I almost sh*t myself. Just the size of it... I couldn’t believe it.“ Several motorists had pulled over when Mr Picone phoned Leopold Wildlife Rescue, but no one answered.

So some of the residents, including a local snake owner, caught the boa and put it in a bag, Mr Picone said.

Mr Picone recorded the incident on camera. He said the boa was largest snake he had seen, except on the news or in captivity.

“That’s probably the closest I’ve been to one,“ he said.

The snake looked big enough to swallow at least a small dog, he added.

Crime Stoppers released an image of the snake last week effort to identify its owner and determine how it got loose.

Boa constrictors are illegal under State and Federal Laws, and can harm native wildlife, Crime Stoppers chief executive officer Erika Owens said.

Boas can carry a virus called Inclusion Body Disease, which is fatal for Australian pythons because they have no resistance to it and there is no treatment available, Ms Owens explained.

“Boa constrictors are among the top five high-risk invasive animals commonly found in Victoria.”

Ms Owens said community involvement was imperative in preventing an influx of illegal wildlife into Australia.

“The community is vital in the prevention of illegal wildlife trafficking and the smallest detail could help to ensure our native wildlife is protected,” she said.

Ms Owens urged locals to call 1800 333 000 and quote reference number CSV2670 if they had any information relating to the snake.

“There is no piece of information too big or too small, and anything you tell us will be passed to investigators, in complete confidence if you wish.”

The snake is now in the custody of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

Boa constrictors are native to the tropical regions of North and South America and significant penalties apply to anyone importing breeding, trading or keeping illegal non-native species in Australia.

LETTERS Try a little tenderness It was extremely disheartening to read about the ongoing struggle greater Geelong is facing with youth crime (Geelong Indy, 9 March).

However, it’s critically important the Victorian Government learns from countries that have effectively reduced this kind of criminal behaviour.

The parts of the USA with a lock-'em-upand-treat-'em-mean approach to teenage lawbreakers have seen disastrous results. A 2016 Harvard Kennedy School report concluded that this approach reduced community safety, destroyed the future of young people and wasted large amounts of government revenue that could be better spent addressing the causes of crime.

By contrast, New Zealand has adopted an approach of seeking to rehabilitate teenage law-breaker to get their lives back on track and heal the community. In the past six years youth crime has dropped 40 per cent and the number of children appearing in court has dropped to its lowest in 20 years.

The approach has been to foster greater collaboration between schools, government agencies, community organisations and the police to better-support families to address their children's behaviour that causes them to break the law.

The Andrews Government has drafted a draconian Local Government Act 2018 bill.

Together with the 10-year old Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET), it would: •฀ make councils corporations as a third tier of government, which Australia’s Constitution disallows following referendum ‘no’ votes in 1974 and 1988, and which is inappropriate because a corporation is a profitmaking enterprise; •฀ elevate councils to authority status, making them laws unto themselves; •฀ allow councils to make local laws, which are different to by-laws and enforceable by police when necessary; •฀ require councils to bring housing up to VEET standards, necessitating audits of properties for works required to meet energy-efficiency targets; •฀ allow councils to arrange for specified works if the owner refuses or fails to comply within on time; •฀ allow councils to transfer site ownership for market value if the owner is unable to pay for work performed; •฀ require homes and businesses meeting VEET requirements to appoint an accredited entity to manage their Energy Efficiency Certificates (EECs); •฀ possibly disconnect power from properties who fail to appoint an accreditation entity; •฀ apply financial penalties for simple EEC accounting errors of $9500 for a dwelling and $38,000 for a body corporate; and •฀ give councils so much additional power over ratepayers that many could potentially lose their homes.

The draft bill closes for public comment today.

Readers should ask their five upper house and single lower house MPs what is going on with the proposed legislation.

“I thought I’ll contact our 500 stall owners and we’ll get them in no time,” the Geelong picker told the Indy, "but we only got one!

“They’re not in vogue. You can’t get channels on them because of the (digital) frequency change.”

So Ballis scoured social media and secondhand websites for the TVs, finding them sitting lifeless in old homes and bungalows.

“They were more than happy to seek out a new home for their TV,” he said.

The TVs will feature in Shirin Abedinirad’s latest art installation at the Lorne Sculpture Biennale, which begins on Saturday.

The Geelong Vintage Warehouse owner scored the gig through a mutual connection to the Iranian.

“We actually picked 70 TVs - so she can be quite fussy in what she chooses with shape and colour,” Ballis said.

Abedinirad arrived in Australia last week, for her second visit to the country, and was looking forward to the two-week sculpture festival.

“I saw an open call online - I was always interested in Australian art events, the 32-yearold from Tehran said.

“Australia has a very big, wide sky that I’d never seen before and the people are very peaceful, friendly and helpful.”

Abedinirad began replacing the screens of the TVs with mirrors this week, to create a sculpture symbolic of the media.

“I believe media is not giving the real news to us or all parts of it - especially in parts of our country,” she said.

The TVs would reflect the surrounds and the people viewing them, which is the media should do, Abedinirad explained.

Both Iranian and international media were misleading people about events in Iran or using it to forward their own agendas there, she said.

“In Iran our media is not showing the reality to us - (they portray) that everything is calm.

outside media they were covering it as a big thing but it was not affecting us in our daily lives - it was only happening in their street.”

Abedinirad’s sculpture will be one of four major projects at the Lorne Sculpture Biennale and will feature alongside the work of about 30 artists.

The biennale is the largest public outdoor sculpture event in Victoria and runs until 2 April.

“It’s not as calm as the Iran media is showing but it’s not bad as the outside media is showing either.”

The media’s coverage of a woman who removed her headscarf in protest against Iran’s compulsory hijab laws was an excellent example, Abedinirad said.

Peepshow’s circus stars

GREAT SCOTT: Pipe bands will descend on Corio this weekend for the Geelong Highland Gathering.

Celts to gather this Sunday Swords will clash, local Celts will don kilts and bagpipes will ring out across the fields of Corio for the Geelong Highland Gathering on Sunday.

The gathering, at Goldworthy Reserve, will feature highland dancing, whiskey tasting, Celtic music, haggis and even a Scottish terrier show.

The 42nd Highland Regiment and the New Varangian Guard will re-enact battles, while the Glen Lachlan College of Arms demonstrates swordsmanship to aspiring warriors.

Celtic competitors will face off in the South Pacific Heavy Scottish Games Championships and the Victorian Pipe Band Championships.

Winning back the pipe band championships was a major breakthrough for the event, explained Geelong Highland Gathering Association treasurer Peter McLoughlin.

The gathering had only hosted the championship three times since 2009, after holding it for a decade up until then.

Regular changes of venue for the gathering over the past few years had caused attendance to decrease, making the gathering reliant on sponsorship, Peter said.

“Hopefully a permanent home at Goldsworthy Reserve will see the gathering begin to recover from the decline it faced moving from venue to venue in recent years.“ The pipe band contest will include music adjudicators from Scotland, New Zealand, New South Wales and Victoria.

Three of the adjudicators judge regularly at the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland.

“The highlight of the day will be the massed pipe bands at the end of the day`s activities,” Peter said.

The gathering also includes a Scottish faire market with food, souvenirs and clothing, and children’s entertainment featuring a petting zoo and jumping castle.

Jess Connell’s tree-climbing obsession as a child growing up in Albury-Wodonga led her to join the circus aged 14.

“My father suggested I join it, with all my energy and bizarre child-like behaviour climbing up trees,” said the 26-year-old, now living in Queensland.

The hula hoop specialist spent four years in the city’s Flying Fruit Fly Circus before joining Brisbane’s Circa Contemporary Circus, which comes to Geelong next weekend.

“My family lives in Ballarat so they’re coming to see the show, which is fantastic,” she said.

“I have a sister that lives (in Geelong) studying health science.”

Connell will perform alongside “six other very talented artists” in Circa’s new act Peepshow, which plays at Geelong Performing Arts Centre from 11 to 14 April.

The tantalising title had no sexual connotations, Connell explained, but rather the show would be “revealing in other ways”.

Circa’s “family” of performers were always questioning and challenging each other artistically, she said.

“We love each other, we hang out together and fight a lot - but we also have a beautiful level of professionalism- we love what we do.”

Connell encouraged adventurous young locals to think about joining a circus.

“Dancing, gymnastics and even martial arts are great platforms to move into the world of circus,” she said.

Geelong is the second stop on Circa’s last tour of Australia, before the circus heads to England and Germany for six months.

“We hope lots of people come to the show and enjoy it before we go overseas for a really long time,“ Connell said.

Fair go for service’s farm Encompass Community Services will host a fourth annual Pumpkin Fair: Ecological Footprint Market next week in partnership with Leopold Community and Learning Centre.

Encompass, a local not-for-profit disabled services agency, said the fair celebrated people of all abilities and backgrounds while also promoting sustainable living practices within the community.

“We're all about shaping inclusive and sustainable local communities, so we constantly create people-centred activities like the Pumpkin Fair,” said Pumpkin Fair committee chair Jan Daniels.

“Last year over 5000 people attended the fair, a proof that people of all abilities and backgrounds, hand in hand with the local community, can put together an event of this scale and make it a huge success!’

Encompass’ three-hectare farm, The Paddock, has been hosting the fair since 2015.

“We deliver life skills support programs and provide a venue for training, work placement and employment,” said farm supervisor Chris Evans.

“We're passionate about promoting the paddock to plate food option and grow sprayfree produce using organic principles.”

Evans said the farm grew and supplied seedlings to local farmers while also offering seasonal produce to local cafes.

The farm also ran Pick Your Own days during summer period, inviting the public to self-harvest produce straight from the ground, he said.

"We also operate an apple cider orchard, in partnership with The Flying Brick.

"We have 16 varieties of heritage apples and hope to bottle our first batch of cider early next year. People will get to see the apple orchard when we do the hourly farm tour at the Pumpkin Fair.

ENCOMPASSING: Apart from celebrating people of all abilities and backgrounds, the annual Pumpkin Fair also aims to promote sustainable living practices within the community.

Sustainable living workshops would cover topics such as no-dig gardening, plant propagation, ricotta cheese-making, “acquaponics”,

and preparing "beer bread", Children’s activities would include makeand-take sessions using recycled materials, The Rookepers wildlife show, live entertainment, a sausage sizzle, a wood oven pizza, and "lots of pumpkins", the organisers said

The Pumpkin Fair will run from 10am to 3pm on 24 March at The Paddock, 21-29 O’Halloran Rd, off Melaluka Rd, Leopold.

“It’s definitely my happy place,” says the Moriac mother-of-two - a coeliac herself - after opening the store seven weeks ago.

“You can tell when people come here for the first time - they don’t know where to start, it can be very overwhelming. They say, ‘I can’t believe I can eat everything here, are you sure it’s Gluten Free?!’

A Cut Above Family Butcher does things a bit different from other shops.

“We’ve gotten away from being traditional butchers,” says owner Daniel McCarthy.

“Although we still have all your steaks, chops, minces and traditional cuts.”

The butcher has created a delicious range of pastries and meals for people on the go, who want to enjoy the freshness and flavour of homemade food without the prep time.

“You can go home, chuck them in the oven and prepare a few things but that’s about it,” Daniel says.

“We work to that 30-minute bracket for cooking.”

The butcher prepares ready-to-go meals including chicken pizza pockets, Mediterranean lamb parcels, chicken enchiladas and butter chicken.

“We make everything on site,” Daniel says.

A few weeks ago A Cut Above won the Victorian finals of the Australia Meat Industry Council’s Sausage King Competition, with its chicken, cheese and bacon snag.

But the butcher is no stranger to awards - its Bonza Burger, choc-full of carrot, red onion, cheese and beetroot, won the industry council’s best burger in Victoria last year.

Daniel started as a butcher at 15 and is now passing on his knowledge to the new generation.

With 20 years in the industry, he says his employees and their customer service are the key to his business.

“I couldn’t do it without them. I can’t serve all the customers and cut all the meat.”

Cats eye last laugh LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club finds itself in finals action for the first time since 2012 after a nervewracking day’s play last Saturday.

Needing to defeat Dandenong to be assured of finals action, the Cats posted 8/312 on day one, thanks mainly to Brenton McDonald's 85 runs at number seven.

Needing to bowl the home side out to claim first innings points, the Geelong bowlers threw everything they could at their hosts but, on a day where nothing went right, Dandenong cruised to an incredible seven-wicket victory.

The Geelong players then had to rely on results in other games going their way, and when news came through that results had indeed been favourable it was jubilation as a longawaited dream was realised.

Now the team travels to Schramm Reserve to play top placed Fitzroy Doncaster this weekend.

While Geelong’s inspirational skipper will be unavailable due to state duties, the rest of the players will take in a nothing-to-lose attitude and may just cause one of the upsets of the season.

Geelong Cricket Association also kicks of its finals this weekend, and this season it’s back to a final four comprising two semi-finals and then a grand final.

In division one, the race for the flag is wide open but North Geelong will go in as slight favourite having finished on top after a 12 gruelling rounds.

North Geelong takes on fourth placed Lara at Stinton Oval in a game that may well ride on the back of Lara’s gun all-rounder, Andy Hughes.

Hughes has made an incredible 741 runs this season at an average of 82.33 while also picking up 14 wickets along the way. However, his fitness remains a mystery after retiring hurt during Lara's first innings against Grovedale

last game and not bowling the following week.

North Geelong will know though that if it can bring its A-game then Hughes won't be a factor, as the side’s best is better than anyone's.

The problem, though, is that North Geelong has been found wanting in recent finals campaigns and will need to banish some ghosts before convincing the rest of the competition of its mettle in March.

The other semi-final sees Grovedale take on East Belmont at Reynolds Reserve in a game between two very evenly matched teams.

Grovedale tuned up for the finals with a clinical run chase against Lara last game, Glen Talarico (80) the star.

East Belmont, however, got thrashed by South Barwon, bowled out for just 107 in pursuit of the Swans’ 304. Admittedly the Lions were without a few of their stars so that form-line might not be worth much but it was still a chance for East Belmont's depth players to show their wares.

And that is what this game will probably come down to. Both sides have plenty of stars but it may well be their lesser lights that hold the key, and the side who can get more out of their role players will most likely win.

In division two, Bell Post Hill took out the minor premiership and will play Torquay at Walker Oval.

The Panthers have been ultra-consistent all season, while the Tigers go in with patchy form.

Bell Post Hill certainly has the more talented and experienced line up, which should hold it in good stead here.

The other semi, at Marshall between Bell Park and Marshall, and looks like one of the closest-matched finals in years.

Bell Park has looked ominous all season, particularly last game against Newcomb & District, where they took out outright points.

Marshall, though, has been going about their business nicely, and with a young side hungry for success, will be keen to inflict some more finals pain on the Dragons who will still have last year’s straight-sets exit lurking in the back of their minds.

This game will go down to the wire, and all eyes will be on Bell Park’s ability to handle the pressure.

Selections: BELL POST HILL v Torquay, BELL PARK v Marshall.

And in division three, Thomson will go in heavy favourite against Alexander Thomson at West Oval, while Modewarre will take on Geelong West at Jarvis Oval.

Thomson is the clear premiership favourite, having taken all before it this season. With pretty much all of its key players in good form at the right time, Thomson should progress to the big dance.

The Modewarre and Geelong West clash looks like being a much closer affair, though, especially with star Rams veteran Sam Loftus coming of a double 100 last game.

Modewarre has a golden opportunity to defeat Thomson a couple of rounds back but failed under pressure and will need to be mentally stronger to win this.

By Josip Zilic North Geelong Warriors finds itself at the top of the NPL2 ladder after last weekend’s 2-1 victory over promotion favourite Altona Magic.

Awaiting the Warriors is a trip to Moreland Zebras, coming off a scoreless draw against Melbourne Victory.

Moreland boasts a very experienced line up with former Victory A-league player Rashid Mahazi among its midfield.

Moreland’s start to 2018 has delivered a win and three draws, marking the Zebras are a very difficult team to break down and Saturday’s match won’t be any different.

It will be interesting to see whether the Warriors’ undefeated start to 2018 can continue after they performed strongly in trying conditions last Saturday in front of their faithful for the first time.

Michael Anderson continued his consistent scoring record against Magic, opening the scoring on 27 minutes when he pounced on an Andrew Scicluna through-ball to slot past Jonathon Harboglu.

With momentum building, several more chances came the Warriors’ way including a narrow miss to Darius Madison who met a long throw from Michael Boyar only to see it glance off the crossbar.

In the 54th minute James McGarry upended Ryan Opperman just outside the box and proceeded to earn an immediate second yellow after slapping Boyar in the head straight after to receive his marching orders.

Madison took the set piece and if not for Harboglu’s brilliant save would have notched up his second of the season.

The Warriors were coming hard and in the 80th minute when Thomas Hidic capitalised his substitute opportunity, receiving a Nicholas Teichmann through ball to outmuscle his opponent and finish smartly under Harboglu to send the North Geelong faithful into hysteria.

Altona tried to lift in the dying minutes and in the 90th scored from a long-range free kick but insufficient time remained to stage a comeback.

Tuna action along coast ON THE BITE Adam Van der Lugt Good conditions over a long weekend saw anglers get into some amazing local fishing action.

Offshore from Barwon Heads had schools of southern bluefin tuna visible in the calm conditions. Although sometimes hard to tempt, the Gulp seveninch jerk shad in white was a standout lure for a number of anglers who were able to entice them to bite with long casts into the schools of fish.

Other techniques such as trolling small skirts are also a productive way of targeting our local tuna.

Trelly’s Tackle World Geelong’s Chris Pitman and friend Daniel Baden ventured out in Saturday morning’s glassy conditions in search of a tuna. Before long they were hooked up to a bigger-than-average school fish after sight-casting into the commotion. Using light gear they fought the fish for an hour before losing it at the side of the boat, although some big Australian salmon caught later provided a worthwhile consolation bycatch.

Kingfish and salmon reaching 2kg were also available in good numbers offhsore. Hugh Hanson and Neil Slater got out on the weekend and tangled with a nice kingfish that ate their squid tentacle bait, with the pair also noting plenty of Australian salmon around.

Hugh and Neil ended up with a mixed bag for the day consisting of kingfish, arrow squid and flathead.

Corio Bay’s inner-harbour also produced some quality mixed bags, with pinkies, squid, flathead and whiting all caught.

Alcoa’s spoil grounds produced snapper to 2kg for anglers drifting while casting soft plastics. Flathead were a welcome bycatch.

Anglers chasing a bag of squid didn’t have to venture too far from the Clifton Springs’ boat ramp. Some anglers reported bag limit captures only 200m from the ramp.

Geelong’s waterfront was back on the map with reports of pinkies on the bite from the yacht club area right across to the North Shore rocks. The best bait seemed to be pilchards or bluebait, although casting soft plastics was also a productive on the pinkies.

Bream anglers found fish in most of the creeks from Torquay to Apollo Bay. Baits such as prawn and scrub worm were ideal for fish any size but larger specimens preferred small freshwater yabbies on a very lightly weighted running sinker rig.

Freshwater fishing remained hot for redfin and trout.

Wurdi Bulloc Reservoir produced decent numbers of redfin. The big ones were yet to appear in good numbers, with the fish averaging around 30cm.

The Barwon River continued running slow and clear after a break from the rains, resulting in fantastic fishing.

Redfin were again hot on the bite, with three to four-inch lightly weighted minnow or grub-style soft plastics working a treat, along with any diving minnowstyle hard-body lure.

The lack of flow at the moment should allow the use of a light burley to attract carp, for which baits such as bread and sweet corn are proven favourites.
