New school cash By Brendan Rees A new secondary school will be built in Pakenham as the Victorian Government plans to spend nearly $240 million buying land for 14 new schools. Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Education James Merlino visited John Henry Primary School in Pakenham to announce the $236.8 million commitment on Tuesday, 13 March. A site next door to John Henry Primary School on Henry Road will be purchased to build a new secondary school. Land purchases have yet to be made and funding for each of the building sites will be announced in the May budget and later in the year. Mr Andrews said: "It takes two years to plan, and then build and have ready to open a school." "We're giving local families the certainty they need that their kids will be able to attend a great local school, close to home." The announcement was a welcomed relief for parents Elaina Haig, Pamela Fairbank and Dee Wittke of John Henry Primary School who petitioned for a new secondary school in Pakenham a month ago with more than 500 signatures. "The three of us got together and started a Change.org page called 'Build a new high school in Pakenham now,' " said Ms Wittke. "I've got a son in Grade Four and if they can have it up and running by 2021 I'll be the happiest parent on the planet," Ms Wittke said.

During his visit to John Henry Primary School, Mr Andrews also announced an additional $20,000 for the school's robotic courses. Labor Party candidate for Bass Jordan Crugnale said the building project was an "absolute significant investment." "This is about future planning. This is great outcome for the local community," she said. Minister for Education James Merlino said the announcement was the biggest school building program seen in Victoria. "Ten new schools opened last year, 11 new schools this year, nine new schools next year, more new schools in 2020, and now we're announcing a further 14 school sites right across Victoria," he said. Victorian Opposition leader Matthew Guy said had the Government not scrapped the East West Link project at a cost of $1.3 billion, 40 news schools and 40 new police stations could've been purchased. "If it was just schools, 77 new schools in our growth areas could've been built," he said. John Henry Primary School Principal Tanya Roberts said many parents were excited about a new secondary school in Pakenham. "Children should go to their local schools and they become involved in their local community and then they can walk and ride to school," she said. The Government will talk with communities at the end of March about what they aspire from their new schools. The Turnbull Government will provide two new ground-breaking flu vaccines to over three million Australians aged 65 years and over - free of charge. This is a direct response to last year's horrific flu season, which had a devastating impact around the world, and aimed squarely at saving lives. More than 90 per cent of the 1,100 flu related deaths in 2017 were by people aged over 65 years of age. The Turnbull Government and the Chief Medical Officer, Professor Brendan Murphy, have worked behind the scenes for many months to bring two new flu vaccines to Australia for the first time. The vaccines have been fast-tracked to ensure lives are saved and that older Australians receive greater protection. These new vaccines - Fluad® and Fluzone High Dose® - were registered in Australia to specifically provide increased protection for people aged 65 years and older. From April 2018, both vaccines will be available through the National Immunisation Program following a recommendation from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee.

A bit of criminal celebrity appeared in the dock and the gallery for an intervention order hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court. The accused, a former outlaw bikie gang leader, pleaded guilty to twice breaching the order visiting the home of the complainant who herself is well known to the court. The judge noted the accused had also paid little heed to his community corrections order. "He does what he wants," the magistrate said. The couple had since varied the order to al-

low the accused at her home but it was too late for him. His corrections order was cancelled and he was sentenced to two months' jail. The man was bailed to appeal the sentence at the County Court of Victoria in April.

Court out Ah, the travails of being a court reporter. Having settled several hours into a gruelling session of note-taking at Dandenong courthouse, a Star News reporter got told a gruesome story of an elderly visitor defecating in the public gallery. The reporter asked "Where?" He was told it was right where he'd been sitting. "Don't worry, we got professional cleaners in," the court manager told him.

Life-saving register Owners are being urged to register their defibrillators due to a large number of the life-saving devices gone missing. Ambulance Victoria estimate that up to 15,000 automated external defibrillators are in unknown locations. Registered defibrillators and their locations are listed on-line so they can be located by first responders. “By registering your defibrillator, you could save the life of someone in your community. “Imagine what the map of Victoria might look like if every defibrillator in the area was registered and could be connected with someone in a life-threatening situation.” It’s estimated that the chance of surviving cardiac arrests reduces by 10 per cent for every passing minute without defibrillation. About 2500 defibrillators are bought and left unregistered in Victoria each year, the ambulance service estimates. To register go to ambulance.vic.gov.au/ register

Expulsions: the big picture By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Berwick school principal has spoken out on the insufficient resources for students with problem-behaviours. Henry Grossek, principal of Berwick Lodge Primary School, said the issue was the "bigger picture" after a public outcry has recently raged over the overturning of students' expulsions for "dramatically bad behaviour". Mr Grossek has never recommended a student for expulsion in his 29 years at Berwick Lodge. "I've just never got to that stage." He said expulsions were generally a short term solution to a large problem that needed a holistic approach. "We are just shifting kids and families around to different schools." But he said principals were especially upset that they had a limited voice in the expulsions appeal process. They had expressed they felt unsupported, with reports of some principals resigning as a result in some recently-publicised cases. Those cases were just the "tip of the iceberg". Under the water was the issue that mainstream schools weren't the best environment for some students, Mr Grossek argues. "There are the special developmental schools, autistic schools and the private Cheshire school - but in many cases the demand outpaces the places for these schools or the cost is prohibitive. "You could argue we don't have enough places available for these students." Mr Grossek said mainstream schools applied for funding for aides to help students with special needs, disabilities and behavioural problems. But the funding was "hard to get", he said. "Many principals would say that the fund-

ing for children with several behavioural problems in schools is inadequate compared to the need - and I would agree. "Behaviour is probably our biggest issue. "There can be a ripple effect across the entire school community where a child, for whatever reason, is behaving in a way that is disruptive to their education, the education of other children and to staff." Family violence - with more than 4500 reported incidents a year in Casey - was a worrying indicator that affected students locally. There was a need for more services to support stressed families, he said. "It has a ripple effect on kids. "It's not just a school problem, it's a societal problem." Principals have described a "tightening" against expulsions since a damning Ombudsman's report in August found too many students were expelled. In some cases, principals were found to have not followed due process, according to the report. In response to a recent outrage about an overturned expulsion, Education Minister James Merlino this month announced principals would have more power in the appeals process. Last month he announced a $8.9 million Protective Schools Package and declared a zero tolerance approach for violence and aggression in schools. "But simply moving the child on doesn't fix the problem. "This is providing support to intervene earlier and stop aggressive behaviour occurring in the future."

No new cops on our beat By Brendan Rees City of Casey has been left hanging dry after missing out on the latest round of police officers to be deployed across the state. Victoria Police announced 825 police recruits will be rolled out over a 12 month period starting in May - but Casey will receive none. Calls for a new 24-hour seven day a week police station in Clyde North have reignited from the State Opposition. Leader of the Opposition Matthew Guy visited Clyde North on Tuesday, 13 March, promising to keep residents safe. "There areas of Casey and Cardinia where crime is up 100 per cent under this Government - it's unacceptable," he said. Mr Guy said the Government had failed at its first responsibility to keep the community safe. "We'll keep Cardinia and Casey safe. Our primary concern will be to give the police the resources and to reform the justice system so when people are caught they face punishment, not a slap on the wrist." Opposition Police Minister Edward O'Donoghue said Cranbourne and Narre Warren police stations were at capacity and only faced greater demand as the population surged. "There's going to be about an extra 100,000 people to 2041 through this southern part of Casey," he said. He added: "You can't put them (police) in an invisible building; you've got to put them in a police station."

It comes as Casey councillors voted at a 6 March council meeting, calling on the State Government to announce more police officers for the City of Casey. "I take my hat off to police who do an amazing job under the most trying of circumstances but a key element in fighting crime is visibility of police as a deterrence," said Cr Sam Aziz. "I trust the Premier will hear our message and make an appropriate announcement before the election," he said. Police Association of Victoria Brendan Roberts said Casey missed out on police this time as it was given new police officers in the last roll out phase. Minister for Police Lisa Neville said Casey received 31 new police in the past year. "An additional 14 family violence specialists have been allocated to the division, which will mean those staffing the family violence unit can return to Casey." "Once again, the Liberal Party is undermining the staffing allocation model - it's not about funding officers in marginal seats or in election times but based on where we need them most," she said. Cardinia will receive six officers and Dandenong will get 32 additional police. Neighbourhood Watch Chairman Rob Ward said residents would like to see more police in their area. "The key with police is not to have them sitting behind desks in building but rather have them out on the road."

In the matter of road building, some roads are locally funded, only the larger roads tend to be funded by the State Government. Local smaller roads are funded by the local government, as the older hands at Casey Council know very well. Slogans tend to blur the funding issues sometimes, and I wonder if this was intentional, on council’s part. Karen Young, (City of Casey district)

Sea of colour By Brendan Rees River Gum Primary School was transformed into a sea of colour on Tuesday, 6 March. The school’s colour run saw students soaked in coloured power as they celebrated the launch of their new houses and house colours which are sky blue, orange, purple and yellow. Year Six teacher Caroline Hodge said the event was organised to encourage student and family engagement. “We really want to connect with our community and let our families take part,” she said. “We really want to encourage school pride and positive thinking in our students so that’s why we have started the year doing something positive like this.” Ms Hodge said the school also runs the Resilience Project. “(This is) about having a growth mindset and being grateful, something that we have been working with for the last year.”

THREE â€Ś Ways to prevent burglaries at home

Lock all windows and doors even when you're at home. Unlocked doors and windows are the most common entry points for burglars.

Install deadlocks on all external doors and windows - as well as a security screen door. But disengage the deadlocks if you're inside, in case of fire.

Make it harder for burglars to get in without being seen. Install sensor lighting, consider having a dog and cut overhanging branches, shrubs and potential hiding places for burglars.

A man has turned to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to fix a disappointing NBN rollout that has “stiffed” Narre Warren South residents in a form of “node-lotto”. Three years ago, Steve Barnes happily posed with then-Communications Minister Mr Turnbull who announced a local NBN rollout in the area, long known as Casey’s biggest internet black-spot. Mr Barnes was hopeful that after 12 years of campaigning, he and his neighbours’ homes would finally get decent internet. But on 12 March, Mr Barnes - an IT worker and cabler - wrote to Mr Turnbull in frustration. “We ended up being stiffed by NBN Co,” Mr Barnes wrote to Mr Turnbull. “Looking around the surrounding neighborhood you will find that the Nodes have been placed next to their respective pillar to get the best possible outcome for households that are connected. “That is not so with our area and we could be forgiven for thinking that this was an intentional act due to our campaign.” Mr Barnes called on Mr Turnbull to intervene - after failed approaches to NBN Co and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield. One of the suggested solutions was for Mr Barnes to pay $600 for a quote on a possible technology change. To get fibre straight to his premises would cost Mr Barnes about $20,000. “If they put the node where it was meant to be, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Put simply, internet speeds are slower because the node cabinet is too far from residents’ home. Over 400 metres away, the speed dramatically “degrades” across the copper-wire connections. Unlike in other parts of Casey, NBN Co did not install a node cabinet next to the telecommunications pillar on Birchwood Street that serves Mr Barnes’s and 74 other homes. Instead a cabinet was built more than 500 metres away in Parkwood Avenue, somewhere in between the housing estate’s two pillars. It has resulted in sluggish download speeds of around 25 Mega bits per second in Mr Barnes’ home - the NBN Co’s minimum threshold and well below the national 70Mbps average. Had a node cabinet been built next to the pillar, residents would receive speeds closer to 100 Mbps, he said. Of about 1000 residents in the estate, Mr Barnes estimates only 20 were getting “full speed”. Mr Barnes has vigorously campaigned for better internet since 2003.

Steve Barnes with a copy of Star News announcing the NBN rollout in Narre Warren South in 2015. 178756 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Until the NBN rollout last year, the estate didn’t even have ADSL broadband because it was about five kilometres from the telephone exchange. “My concern is five years from now is that the speed won’t be good enough anymore. “To be without internet for 14 years and then be stuck with a dinosaur - it’s almost like they did it deliberately.” An NBN spokesman said the fibre-to-thenode cabinet locations were chosen because they “most appropriately fitted our design and operational requirements”. He said the fibre-to-the-node technology enabled the NBN rollout to be delivered quicker and more cost effectively than fibre-to-theremises. “Around 70 percent of fibre-to-the-node end-user premises are able to access at least 50Mbps and by the end of the co-existence period all FTTN end-user premises will be able to access at least 25Mbps.” La Trobe Liberal MP Jason Wood said he was pushing for Mr Fifield to meet with Mr Barnes and concerned residents to fix the issue. Mr Wood said he had great respect for Mr Barnes and his “quite unbelievable” internet knowledge. Infrastructure changes such as installing a node cabinet or fibre-to-the-kerb would take some time, he said. “In the electorate there’s very few NBN issues that haven’t been resolved. “I haven’t given up on this matter at all.” Mr Turnbull’s press office did not respond. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Snakes alive By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren resident Henry Sonogan thought the snake eggs sealed in a take-away container at his home were dormant. Since he found them under a slab of rock on his farm in Buchan, the eggs seemed to have shrivelled up. Mr Sonogan thought they would be interesting to show the family kids. But early on 13 March, seven brown snakes emerged and gave him a nasty surprise. Though safely contained, the slithering mass of juveniles was potential “heart-attack” material, he said. Then Mr Sonogan pondered what to do with his new ‘pets’ - who from day one are prone to bare their highly venomous fangs.

Narre Warren South’s Leah Pratt has crammed a “life of service and sacrifice” into the past century. Last weekend, Ms Pratt celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her three children Gordon, Kim and Mike as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family also visited her home at Casey Manor, Narre Warren South, on her actual birthday on 13 March. Ms Pratt is hailed for her baking skills that were on display at a popular cake shop in Upwey - co-run with her mother Beatrice and sisters Winsome, Audrey and Ruth. Her lamingtons, Christmas puddings, mince pies, tarts and cakes stick long in the memory. And also for being such an outstanding role-model for her family and friends, a devout Christian often visiting the sick and baking for the needy. When born on 13 March 1918, women’s average life expectancy was just 51 years. Ms Pratt had doubled that, with her children thankful for every day of her life, one of the celebrators said. She had a great capacity for change, like adjusting from driving a four-cylinder Morris Minor to a “huge straight-eight Plymouth”, son Mike said. “It was like going from the Morris to a tank. “You would never know when Dad would come home with a new car and you never knew when he would come home with a new job.” The family home in East Ringwood was a hive of activity, looking after the kids and the neighbourhood, as Mike tells it. One day, she literally hosed down Mike to cool down a backyard cricket dispute that threatened to boil over. “When we talk about gender at work and everything else Mum lived it,” Mike said.

New chief looks forward By Nick Creely The Pakenham Racing Club celebrated its third birthday in style on Thursday 8 March, with Simon Conn officially unveiled as the new Chairman after the retirement of Don Duffy. Duffy, who has been the Chairman for almost two decades, announced his retirement at the Board Meeting on Monday 5 March. “It’s been a privilege to serve the members of the Pakenham Racing Club as Chairman for the last 15 years and as a member of the Board for over 25 years. Given my lengthy tenure in the role, I have been contemplating for some months when would be the right time to step down as Chairman. The vision for the new racecourse continues to unfold and I am particularly delighted about the pace of the development and the number of major projects that have been delivered. There are many opportunities ahead for this great Club,“ Duffy said. Conn; who was also celebrating his 60th birthday on the night; told a packed room of members that he was looking forward to embracing what lies ahead in his new role, and lead the room in singing Happy Birthday to the Club. “I’m deeply honoured to take on the role as Chairman of the Pakenham Racing Club; the club has a long and proud history of exceptional Chairman, and I’m honoured to be in their footsteps,” he said. “It’s my 18th year on the committee, and I don’t see any real need for changes to our make-up and agenda. “Our masterplan is well thought out and will present many challenges going forward; I look forward to working hard on the membership to continue to achieve many great things for the future of the Pakenham Racing Club. “On a personal note; I’ve worked closely with Don Duffy for the last 18 years, and in particular in the last 10 as Vice Chairman; Don has been an exceptional Chairman, we owe him a great debt of gratitude in leading the club and the committee with distinction.” “We have some major projects on the horizon with the further development of the Racecourse Masterplan and through the potential opportunities that exist for the Club as the racing industry metropolitan infrastructure review continues to unfold. Never too early, Steve blooms in his Sunday win PAKENHAM GOLF The scoring at Pakenham continues to be low in every competition due to the course being in fantastic condition and the greens rolling true. On Monday last week the winner in A Grade was Andrew Melville, having 41 points off his 3 handicap to win on a countback from Chris 'Hole In One' Kondarios. The B Grade winner was Glenn Charles with 42 points ahead of Barrie Seldon on 41 points. Mick Boyd went extremely close to having another hole in one, finishing just 84cm away on the second hole. Players needed 38 to win a ball on the day. On Wednesday the conditions were extremely hot and the A Grade winner is not a regular player during the week. Robin McCrae had a great score of +5 to win A Grade with Barry Williams runner-up with +4. The B Grade winner was Stewart MacDonald with +5, followed closely by Graham Allan with +4. Leigh Burton had an incredible +6 to win the Supercomp around the back, but had a rather forgettable front nine to only win a ball. Barry Williams and Tim Pratt were successful with their respective scratchies, and players won a ball with +1. Congratulations to Edna Beulke and Lynne Taylor. Stephen Northcott won on Friday last week with 38 points, and he also won with his scratchie - as did Tim Pratt. The past couple of weeks have provided some amazing scores and Rod Beard has seen some of these close up. Saturday was his turn and he returned 47 points to have the best score of the day and take out C Grade. Warren Arnott also played well and had 40 points to finish runner up. Brian Webster scored 43 points to win B Grade on a countback from Jim Dimtsas. Doug Amos finally decided to try and scored 40 points to win on a countback from one of Pakenham's extremely steady (Bandits) players, Noel Bonne. There were two scratchie winners again on Saturday with Neil Atchison and David Leek taking home a couple of dollars. On Sunday the winner was Steve Bloomfield with 39 points, but he thought he'd blown a great round after some quiet celebration on the 16th tee. Dees move a step closer By Nick Creely AFL WOMEN'S REVIEW - ROUND 6 Melbourne is within touching distance of a grand final berth after destroying Carlton by 35 points on Sunday. In front of almost 7000 people at Ikon Park, the Demons thrilled in the first term, booting six unanswered goals to open up a 38 point quarter time lead. Despite the Blues fighting back, the Demons were always one step ahead, and ran out comfortable winners, with midfielder Elise O'Dea, Daisy Pearce and Tegan Cunningham among the stars of the show. Cheltenham got off to a good start and quickly established a small lead. However by the halfway mark the Lions had caught, and were matching, them and the overall margin was down to a single shot. From that point forward, unfortunately, one Pakenham rink lost its way and despite the efforts of the other three, Cheltenham was able to claim victory, 79-67. Despite not winning the flag, the threes can look back on their season with pride and look forward with confidence as they step up to Division Three next season. Pakenham 4 (Division 6) was also on the road for its semi final against Keysborough at their opponents' home ground. Signs were not good in this game from the very beginning as Keysborough jumped away to an early lead, which had grown to 20 shots by the halfway mark. From that point the Lions held their own and began to make real inroads into the lead as they approached the business ends of the game. Unfortunately, however, they left their run too late and lost by nine shots, 59-68; an honourable defeat but defeat nevertheless. PAKENHAM BOWLS The final rounds of the home and away season were played last week with five of the nine Pakenham sides finishing in the top four in their sections and earning a berth in the finals. Two other teams only just missed out. SATURDAY Pakenham 3 (Division 4) had the shortest of away trips for its semi final on Saturday - just across town to Cardinia Waters. The game was an arm wrestle all afternoon and although both sides had two rinks up and two down for the majority of the contest, it always seemed to be Cardinia Waters which had its nose in front. At the halfway mark the score was 3942 against the Lions and with three quarters of the game completed, the deficit was still only a very manageable four shots. Incredibly, with 84 ends completed the score was tied at 80-all and an extra end was required on all rinks to determine the outcome. However Ron Hawkins, one of the Pakenham players, had already left the green and was on his way to hospital as his wife had unfortunately experienced a medical emergency. Consequently, after sitting on the sideline cooling his heels in the 35-degree heat all afternoon, substitute John Coote was called upon to step up and play one cut-throat end of bowls. John was as nervous as a kitten yet, in a remarkable feat, on a surface on which he had virtually no previous experience, and without the benefit of a roll up, he delivered two bowls to within a foot of the jack. Pressure? - What pressure? In the end, Pakenham scored six shots to one in that extra end and with two rinks up, one drawn and one down, emerged as victors 86-81. MIDWEEK After lowering their colours to ladder leader Cranbourne in the final home and away round, the women's-only side faced the daunting task of playing the same opponent again in their semi-final match last Tuesday - this time on Cranbourne's home ground. However the Pakenham ladies brought their 'A Game' to the contest and were there to play. They surprised Cranbourne by jumping away early and with two rinks up, held a handy lead 41-29 at the lunch break. From that point though, the locals began to chip away at Pakenham's lead and with a final rush of 11 shots to two over the last six ends, finished the Lions' season. With a score of 28-14, Jen Bainbridge's rink was the only winner for Pakenham in the close 62-66 overall finish. Despite the defeat, the ladies should be proud of their achievements this season, particularly having made the finals. Those who competed were Jennifer Bainbridge (S), Lois Brock (3), Janet Stevenson (2) and Sandra Wilde (L); Josie Mazzarella (S), Ave Jones (3), Anna Barrie (2) and Fiona Samson (L); and Kerry Lewis (S), Val Moore (3), Annie Wetere (2) and Lavinia Moss (L), with Faye Osborne as emergency. By finishing second in their section, Pakenham Three (Div 3 Open) had the benefit of a home semi and made the most of that advantage. Also playing Cranbourne, they got away to a good start and by half way through the game were well up on one rink and held slender margins on the other two. The visitors pushed hard after the break but the Lions held firm for a satisfying 70-43 win with all rinks up. The best rink with 31-12 was Charles Harris (S), John Moore (3), Ken Clifton (2) and Ray Pigdon (L). Jim Barrie (S), Bill Bosch (3), Peter Bott (2) and Ray Illing (L) scored 21-14 while Paul Currie (S), Kevin Donald (3), John Siekman (2) and Joy Tomlin (L) had a close one, 18-17. The side that went to Berwick for the grand final against Keysborough was unchanged. Despite allowing their opponents to get away to an early lead, the Lions came back hard and by half way had two rinks up and a slender 35-32 lead. Unfortunately, Pakenham was unable to maintain that momentum on two of its three rinks and Keysborough eventually prevailed by 63 shots to 53. Having just missed a Division 3 flag, the threes will face tougher competition next year in Division 2. The six-a-side Pakenham 4 also earned a home semi, having finished on top of their section. They got away to a slow start in a close game against Edithvale and by halfway were up on one rink, down on the other but behind, by only two shots overall. The battle continued to be evenly balanced right to the end but it was Pakenham which was victorious, albeit by just two shots. John Hickman (S), Ray Leggett (2) and Peter Jones won 2017, while Alan Waterson (S), Peter Wilson (2) and Lindsay Stevenson (L) lost a cliff-hanger, 18-19. The side which travelled to Churchill Waverley Golf for the grand final against Hampton Park was also unchanged. This game was a nailbiter from the word go - the margin never got to more than a handful of shots either way at any stage of the game and their was only one shot in it at the half way mark. The final outcome was decided on the last end of the day; unfortunately it went the way of Hampton Park with a 32-33 score line. M4 style makes its mark By Ewan Kennedy BMW M3 is arguably the hero car in the German marque’s lineup. Okay, so there are other M models and even the i8 hybrid supercar, but there's something special about a smallish fourdoor sedan that can take on, and beat, much more expensive machines on a day-to-day basis. Once upon a time the BMW M4 two-door coupe would have been called the M3 coupe, but the revised naming system from Bavaria gives the sporty-bodied models even-numbered designations. But enough with the semantics, let’s take a look at the special BMW M4 variant that we’ve testing all week - the M4 Pure two-door coupe. The Pure puts an even-sharper focus on the driver by combining the Competition package with a competitive price of $139,900. The M4 Pure’s specification includes ConnectedDrive Freedom (with Concierge Services), Driving Assistant, carbon-fibre interior trims, carbon structure cloth/leather upholstery, LED headlights and a nine-speaker HiFi Loudspeaker System. So it’s no stripped down special. The front shares the same shape as the standard models in the M4 range. No bad thing as its already pretty aggressive in appearance. And don't forget this is a lower cost variant (these things are relevant) so there was no money spent on revised styling. The BMW M4 coupe has a sleek rear end that works beautifully, we particularly like the way the spoiler is integrated into the boot lid. The sculpted bonnet has a serious power bulge that gives it a purposeful look. The optional 20-inch black alloys fitted to our test car worked well visually with the brilliant white paint. Hmm… but we do enjoy doing our own gearshifts and would probably opt for the manual if buying an M4. Incorporating the latest BMW Navigation system Professional, iDrive6 offers a clear and customisable 8.8-inch colour display interface with an app-style ‘tile’ layout that can be arranged by touchscreen. The now-tamed BMW iDrive rotary controller on the centre console and Natural voice control can also be used to control the systems.

The dynamic ability of a car like this BMW sports coupe, such as enhanced braking systems and dynamic stability control makes for excellent primary safety - that is, not having a crash in the first place. However, should everything still go wrong the impressive BMW Connected Drive electronic system includes Intelligent Emergency Call which transmits vehicle crash information to a BMW call centre from where emergency services are alerted if required.
