Together with their children, Warren and Mariza Perera are the proud operators of The Cheesecake Shop at Casey Central Shopping Centre. Endeavouring to combine Mariza’s love and talent for cake decorating, the Pereras began at The Cheesecake Shop almost six year ago. While Warren takes care of the baking, Mariza enjoys a challenge when it comes to decorating custom made cakes, especially when decorating with fondant and attempting new cake designs. Schools splash New schools will be built in Cranbourne West and Clyde North as the Victorian Government plans to spend nearly $240 million buying land for 14 new schools. Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Education James Merlino visited John Henry Primary School in Pakenham to announce the $236.8 million commitment on Tuesday, 13 March. The funding will buy land for a primary and a secondary school in Clyde North, as well as a secondary school and special school for Cranbourne West. Mr Andrews said a date had not been set when the schools would open as land purchases had not been finalised and funding for each of the building sites would be announced in the May budget and later in the year. Mr Andrews said: "It takes two years to plan, and then build and have ready to open a school." "We know that's a fast growing community (Clyde North and Cranbourne) and we know we need to invest there and we will," he said. "We're giving local families the certainty they need that their kids will be able to attend a great local school, close to home." Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said the new schools would meet the future needs of families in the fast growing communities of Clyde North and Cranbourne. "It's no secret that Cranbourne West is booming, and we have got on with the job of delivering the new schools local families are crying out for," he said. "When it opens, this much needed second-
ary college with a special school will be a great local school that the whole community can be proud of." City of Casey Councillor Amanda Stapeldon said although she welcomed the announcement, the Government needed to ensure a safe environment was provided for parents and carers to drop off and collect their children from school by car. "We're left with a legacy of really dangerous circumstances, putting our children in danger," she said. Officer Specialist School principal Sue Campbell said "Any extra support to help students with disabilities is greatly appreciated and supported." Minister for Education James Merlino said the announcement was the biggest school building program seen in Victoria. "Ten new schools opened last year, 11 new schools this year, nine new schools next year, more new schools in 2020, and now we're announcing a further 14 school sites right across Victoria," he said. Victorian Opposition leader Matthew Guy said had the Government not scrapped the East West Link project and wasted $1.3 billion, 40 news schools and 40 new police stations could've been purchased. "If it was just schools, 77 new schools in our growth areas could've been built," he said. The Government will talk with communities at the end of March about what they aspire from their new schools. Casey misses out By Brendan Rees City of Casey has been left hanging dry after missing out on the latest round of police officers to be deployed across the state. Victoria Police announced 825 police recruits will be rolled out over a 12 month period starting in May - but Casey will receive none. Calls for a new 24-hour seven day a week police station in Clyde North have reignited from the State Opposition. Leader of the Opposition Matthew Guy visited Clyde North on Tuesday, 13 March, promising to keep residents safe. “There areas of Casey and Cardinia where crime is up 100 per cent under this Government - it’s unacceptable,” he said. Mr Guy said the Government had failed at its first responsibility to keep the community safe. “We’ll keep Cardinia and Casey safe. Our primary concern will be to give the police the resources and to reform the justice system so when people are caught they face punish-
ment, not a slap on the wrist.” Opposition Police Minister Edward O’Donoghue said Cranbourne and Narre Warren police stations were at capacity and only faced greater demand as the population surged. “There’s going to be about an extra 100,000 people to 2041 through this southern part of Casey,” he said. He added: “You can’t put them (police) in an invisible building; you’ve got to put them in a police station.” It comes as Casey councillors voted at a 6 March council meeting, calling on the State Government to announce more police officers for the City of Casey. “I take my hat off to police who do an amazing job under the most trying of circumstances but a key element in fighting crime is visibility of police as a deterrence,” said Cr Sam Aziz. “I trust the Premier will hear our message and make an appropriate announcement before the election,” he said.
Police Association of Victoria Brendan Roberts said Casey missed out on police this time as it was given new police officers in the last roll out phase. Minister for Police Lisa Neville said Casey received 31 new police in the past year. “An additional 14 family violence specialists have been allocated to the division, which will mean those staffing the family violence unit can return to Casey.” “Once again, the Liberal Party is undermining the staffing allocation model - it’s not about funding officers in marginal seats or in election times but based on where we need them most,” she said. Cardinia will receive six officers and Dandenong will get 32 additional police. Neighbourhood Watch Chairman Rob Ward said residents would like to see more police in their area. “The key with police is not to have them sitting behind desks in building but rather have them out on the road.”
Our Miss Australia winner on cloud nine By Brendan Rees Cranbourne North’s Catherine Ayad is on cloud nine after being crowned Miss Australia International for 2018. The delighted 24 year-old was announced this year’s winner at a glittering ceremony in Sydney on the 22 February which recognised gifted women from across the country. “It was so surreal when they announced the first runner up and I knew I won,” she said. “I couldn’t wait to take my first walk as Miss Australia International 2018.” “The first thing I did was look up and thank god for this incredible opportunity then I blew a kiss to my mother in the crowd. “I had my mum fly up from Melbourne and friends from Sydney attend. It was so encouraging knowing they are there supporting me.” Born in Egypt and raised in Australia, Ms Ayad decided on Fitted for Work as her charity, where she volunteers her time helping dress disadvantaged women to embrace their individuality. “We also work to re-stablish a woman’s self-confidence and resilience and we do this through our woman kind and mentoring programs.” Fitted for Work, she says, raised $2392 during a fundraiser event held in Melbourne on 16 February. Ms Ayad will travel to America in July where she will and represent Australia for the Mrs, Miss and Miss Teen International pageant with 69 other women competing from around the globe. “I am hoping whilst I’m there to raise as much awareness for Fitted for Work as possible and ensure everyone knows what they do. I am so excited, nervous and cannot wait to travel.” Ms Ayad hopes to inspire young women
IN BRIEF Rider taken to hospital A Cranbourne motorcyclist suffered serious injuries after a collision with a car in Shepparton on Sunday morning, 11 March. It is alleged the collision occurred at the intersection of Wyndham and Fryer streets about 3.45am. The rider, a 35-year-old Cranbourne man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police have charged a 21-year-old Marionvale man with a range of offences including conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury, recklessly cause serious injury and drive in a manner dangerous. He was bailed to appear at Shepparton Magistrates' Court on 28 May.
Man caught drink driving A Cranbourne man had his car impounded after being caught drink driving during the early hours of Monday, 12 March. The 34 year-old was pulled over by the High Patrol on Clairmont Avenue after he was seen running a red light on South Gippsland Highway. He was breath-tested on the scene and police say registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.141. The man was also found in breach of an interlock and a zero blood alcohol conditions. His vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1042.44 and will be summonsed to court at a later date.
Man charged with bus assault A 21 year-old Hampton Park man has been charged after allegedly sexually assaulting a 15 year-old year girl on a bus last month. Police say the girl was travelling on a bus on Saturday, 17 February when a male boarded the bus on Hallam Road and allegedly assaulted her. Detectives arrested the 21-year-old Hampton Park man on Friday, 9 March. He was charged with three count of sexual assault of a child under 16 and was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on the 6 April.

Fire-fighters were battling on Wednesday as the News was going to press to contain a smoky blaze at a retirement village in Cranbourne East. Residents and staff were evacuated from Blue Hills Retirement Village at 125 BerwickCranbourne Road. All were reported as safe. The fire erupted in a single-storey brick recreational room shortly after 1pm, a CFA spokesman said. Nine CFA vehicles were at the scene to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, he said. A nearby section of Berwick-Cranbourne Road was closed to traffic. CFA issued a message for local residents, advising them to shut doors and windows and avoid breathing the heavy smoke.

Much cheaper and quicker than Labor’s plan, you said. Is there a slight difficulty in one area ... in that the NBN kinda sorta doesn’t work? And where are we now ... $50 billion and counting? Or have I lost track? Seems to me, Malcolm, as long as you’re PM, you’re honour bound to fix this one. Only this week, did you notice the radical change proposed by NBNCo? Did you hear? Yep - two new words for them - customer service. Wow. Just wow. Maybe wake up and smell the 21st century. How frustrating is it for us to watch poor little New Zealand’s internet forging ahead ... while ours lags (pun intended). We’d expect better from the man who some claim invented the internet. And while we’re at it, please stop this constant to-ing and fro-ing between NBNCo and the internet service providers. Someone’s responsible, and I’m pretty sure it’s you. So what you’re about to learn, Malcolm, is that slow internet annoys everyone in the household - the voters and the non-voters. And they might be prepared to live with the world’s dearest electricity. We might even blame that on the states. But this snail-like internet, we will not cop. By Brendan Rees A man aged in his fifties was taken to Frankston Hospital this morning after falling from a roof in Cannons Creek. Ambulance crews were called to May Street just before 10am where it’s believed the man fell from a roof whilst carrying out maintenance work. The man suffered injuries to his back and hip and remained in a stable condition. Ambulance Victoria media spokesperson Lina Howi could not confirm if the building was a workplace and said it was unknown how the fall occurred. Worksafe was aware of the incident and were making enquiries.

A 19-year-old Clyde woman has died following a crash in Carrum Downs on Friday, 9 March. The woman, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died on Saturday morning, 10 March. It is believed a car crashed into a stationary truck on Boundary Road just after 7.30am. The 50-year-old male driver and a second 19-year-old female passenger, both from Clyde, were not injured. The truck driver, a 24-year-old Epping man, was also not injured. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the crash. Pearcedale fire brigade responded to a collision last Saturday night, 3 March, where a car landed on its roof in Langwarrin South. The car was travelling south along the Westernport Highway between Robinsons Road and North Road at about 11.20pm. A woman in her 30s managed to walk away with only some grazes after her car hit a roadside barrier and overturned. A police spokeswoman said “They’ve collided with water barriers on the side of the side road which is then made the car launch into the air, land on its roof and that’s when it’s connected with those permanent concrete
barriers, slide down them and stopped in the middle of the road.” It’s believed the driver was tired at the time of the collision. An ambulance spokesman said the woman was treated at the scene and suffered grazes and a sore shoulder. Pearcedale CFA Second Lieutenant Chris Judd said the driver had a lucky escape. “It was good to see her walk out of the vehicle. She was a bit shaken up. A couple of the locals that live around that area helped her out of the car.” “She was out of the vehicle when we got there; made sure everything was safe,” he said.

In the matter of road building, some roads are locally funded, only the larger roads tend to be funded by the State Government. Local smaller roads are funded by the local government, as the older hands at Casey Council know very well. Slogans tend to blur the funding issues sometimes, and I wonder if this was intentional, on council’s part. Karen Young, (City of Casey district)

Not playing around By Brendan Rees More than 100 residents have signed a petition to build a play area at a newly developed Cranbourne East estate. Families are campaigning for the play area, which they say was promised by a real estate group before moving in. A petition calling for a playground at Brindalee Estate was signed by 113 residents who have sought Casey Council's help to meet the needs of the growing community. Cr Amanda Stapledon, who supported the need for a playground, tabled the petition at a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday, 20 February. She said many were young families who needed somewhere for their children to play, adding "Every child should have an opportunity to play. "I have been approached by a pro-active and respectful group of residents who simply want somewhere for their children to play and somewhere for all residents to sit whilst enjoying the outdoors," she said. "It is a complex matter due to some of the land not being owned by council but this is something that we are committed to working through." Casey council will meet with residents around Genevieve Circuit to discuss the need for a playground, maintenance of grass-cutting, traffic issues along internal streets and a foot path to a nearby school crossing. A Brindalee resident, who asked his surname not to be revealed, said about 200 kids were forced to play on the streets every day. "Three and four year olds are riding their bike on the road," he said. "Kids have jumped in front of cars with their bike." He said Victorian House Land Specialists (VHLS) made him a promise that a playground would be built when he bought his family's house.

Picture: CONTRIBUTED "We paid extra because we thought we were getting a facility in front of our house. We were made a false promise." Resident Amandeep Singh said he was also misguided by VLHS. "Now, he is saying there is no park and no pedestrian link in whole plan," he said. "(The) big question is how planning department has overlooked basic services like park, school and public connectivity. "Our biggest concern is kids safety, we just want our kids to stay away from road and safer access to school." Cr Stapledon also raised an issue of safety with an open space at the estate. "There is an easement that requires the grass to be cut on a regular basis otherwise; snakes are sited and this is a safety risk for children.
"The open space in part owned by council and in other parts, by a State Government authority," she said. Victorian House Land Specialists director Anand Woodhoo said no promises were made of a playground to people buying land, nor were they charged a higher fee. "Would you promise anything? It's not our land, we just sell it," he said. "If we sell something we sell it according to plan of subdivision. So how can I say next door there will be park when there is a block of land?" He said the developer had to meet council compliance requirements, adding "He doesn't go there and start digging and put a road or a house or whatever he wants."
A man was lucky to walk away unharmed after his four wheel drive collided with a power pole in Cranbourne South on Tuesday, 6 March. The car was travelling south along Maywood Road which is a gravel road between North Road and Scott Road at about 12.05pm. Pearcedale fire brigade member Robyn Murphy said she was first on scene and found the driver out of the car, talking on his phone. She said the car was wedged between a roadside property and the power pole, which had splintered. "He hit it at the corner (of the pole) and spun around on that," she said. "The car was facing perpendicular to the road. He was lucky. "The first thing I did was make sure that everyone was out of the car and no one was extremely hurt," Ms Murphy said. "He (driver) had already grabbed his stuff out of the car and he was heading to the property two doors down." She said the driver says he had "hit the breaks to swerve around a rabbit and lost control and ended up hitting a post." Pearcedale and Langwarrin CFA fire crews also attended the incident. "We really didn't do much. All we could do was make sure that the appropriate services were called," Ms Murphy said. She said the public were kept at bay while they waited for the power company to arrive as the pole was unstable. Ambulance and police were contacted but were unable to provide any details of the incident.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… Flu shots for free The Turnbull Government will provide two new ground-breaking flu vaccines to over three million Australians aged 65 years and over - free of charge. This is a direct response to last year’s horrific flu season, which had a devastating impact around the world, and aimed squarely at saving lives. More than 90 per cent of the 1,100 flu related deaths in 2017 were by people aged over 65 years of age. The Turnbull Government and the Chief Medical Officer, Professor Brendan Murphy, have worked behind the scenes for many months to bring two new flu vaccines to Australia for the first time. The vaccines have been fast-tracked to ensure lives are saved and that older Australians receive greater protection. These new vaccines - Fluad® and Flu-
zone High Dose® - were registered in Australia to specifically provide increased protection for people aged 65 years and older. From April 2018, both vaccines will be available through the National Immunisation Program following a recommendation from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee.
Present and correct A bit of criminal celebrity appeared in the dock and the gallery for an intervention order hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The accused, a former outlaw bikie gang leader, pleaded guilty to twice breaching the order visiting the home of the complainant who herself is well known to the court. The judge noted the accused had also paid little heed to his community corrections order. “He does what he wants,” the magistrate said. The couple had since varied the order to allow the accused at her home but it was too late for him.
His corrections order was cancelled and he was sentenced to two months’ jail. The man was bailed to appeal the sentence at the County Court of Victoria in April.
Court out Ah, the travails of being a court reporter. Having settled several hours into a gruelling session of note-taking at Dandenong courthouse, a Star News reporter got told a gruesome story of an elderly visitor defecating in the public gallery. The reporter asked “Where?” He was told it was right where he’d been sitting. “Don’t worry, we got professional cleaners in,” the court manager told him.
Life-saving register Owners are being urged to register their defibrillators due to a large number of the life-saving devices gone missing.
Ambulance Victoria estimate that up to 15,000 automated external defibrillators are in unknown locations. Registered defibrillators and their locations are listed on-line so they can be located by first responders. “By registering your defibrillator, you could save the life of someone in your community. “Imagine what the map of Victoria might look like if every defibrillator in the area was registered and could be connected with someone in a life-threatening situation.” It’s estimated that the chance of surviving cardiac arrests reduces by 10 per cent for every passing minute without defibrillation. About 2500 defibrillators are bought and left unregistered in Victoria each year, the ambulance service estimates. To register go to ambulance.vic.gov.au/register

Two nabbed for burglaries
Tips for leaders By Brendan Rees Intermediate VCAL students at Alkira Secondary College in Cranbourne North were treated with a visit from leaders of the community last week. Students interviewed guests including Vietnam veterans from the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, a current serving Sergeant Major, a sergeant from Cranbourne Police Station, members of the Cranbourne Lions Club, one member of the Cranbourne RSL committee, and a volunteer from the Narre Warren Soup Kitchen on Friday, 9 March. Teacher Nicole Scott said students learned about different styles of leadership and conflict resolution. "This is the first time we have tried using special guests to meet VCAL outcomes on leadership this way. We will be doing it again as it was very successful," she said. "This is certainly a way to meet communication outcomes successfully as well." Michael Newbond from Cranbourne RSL said: "It is a privilege to be asked to work with the intermediate VCAL students on leadership and conflict." VCAL students Deon, Reece and Adrian say "It was interesting learning and hearing from someone else's point of view and to know their stories about the Transit Soup Kitchen for the homelessness." Alkira Secondary College teacher aide Clinton Abraham also spoke to the students. Students Kayla, Tiarn and Sean say Mr Abraham had a "colourful life" with plenty of experience from helping people in Africa to students at Alkira. "Listening to Clinton was better than learning from books in the classroom," the students said.
Police have charged two men following two burglaries in Cranbourne and Carrum Downs on Tuesday, 6 February. The burglaries allegedly occurred at a supermarket on Thompsons Road in Cranbourne just before 2.30am and a store on Ballarto Road in Carrum Downs. Mobile phones and cigarettes were allegedly stolen. A 21-year-old Noble Park man and a 19-yearold Oakleigh East man were charged with burglary, aggravated burglary, theft of motor car and other theft related offences on Tuesday, 6 February. They have both been remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today (Thursday, 8 February).

Two arrested in social sting Two people have been arrested following an investigation into a series of robberies in Melbourne's South-East. Southern Metro Region Crime Team detectives have arrested the two males, a 17 year-old Cranbourne teenager and a 19 year-old Dandenong men following the execution of three search warrants. Police raided addresses on Burberry Place, Cranbourne; Foster Street, Dandenong and Dusseldorp Avenue, Pakenham, on the evening of 6 March as part of the investigation into the robberies, which they believe were arranged via social media over the past few weeks.

Dust up over grower’s dirt By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne North resident is at wits end with dust blowing from a neighbouring market garden that is layering up in his home. Graeme Klyne, who lives on Elderberry Alley, says he is constantly left cleaning his house from the dust that blows from a market garden on the corner of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Thompsons Road. Mr Klyne, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, says the dust is also harmful for his breathing. "When it hits, I'm struggling to breath and the house is just covered in dust. It is absolutely putrid." The dust is so thick at times, he says, it gathers on doors and windows. "We've had numerous dust storms over the last weeks that have basically decimated the house. And when I say decimated I mean dust - you can draw pictures on," he said. "There's a probably over a 100 acres of market garden and this concrete quarry and most of the wind blows from south-north and it just inundates this estate." He said he moved into the area knowing there was a market garden and a quarry nearby. "So we expected some stink and we expected you know a little bit disruption." But he added for the past three to four years "This is just something we put up on a daily basis. "It's been really bad this year. When there's top cover on you don't get as much dust obviously. But it has been putrid to the point where my house is normally kept clean."
"There have been times at Woolworths (at the Avenue Village Shopping Centre) where you couldn't see the other side of the car park - just from the dust storms." EPA's Southern Metro Region Manager Marleen Mathias said an Officer for the Protection of the Local Environment (OPLE) had confirmed the City Council received a report of dust issues "in a street" near the market garden. The OPLE will inspect the market garden next week to assess its dust management controls, she said. "Should there be significant amounts of dust leaving the property, EPA will consider issuing a legally enforceable notice specifying the actions the operator of the market garden to undertake to prevent dust entering neighbouring streets. "There are also options for Council to deal with any issue through its powers under the Road Management Act." A spokeswoman for the City of Casey council said council didn't have any authority in the matter as the market garden was not council land. A staff member from Woolworths at the Avenue Village Shopping Centre, who asked their name not to be revealed, said the store was not impacted by the dust. Proving dreams can be real By Brendan Rees The owner of a community-driven business in Hampton Park which supports people of all diversities has been nominated for a Victorian Young Achiever Award. Khan Hazara, 26, who runs Dandy Mart, a grocery shop in Somerville Rd, immigrated to Australia from Afghanistan in 2009, and has now been nominated for the WFI Insurance Small Business Achiever Award, one of ten categories in the Victorian Young Achiever Awards. “We can proudly say Dandy Mart has been supporting communities of all races and religions in the local area for all its festivals and community programs,” Mr Hazara said. “We are selling quality meat, continental deli, a huge variety of food products from international brands, fruits and vegetables and much more under one roof. “We have customers from all corners of the world; Europe, Middle East, Asia, Australia and more. Mal-function By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has turned to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to fix a disappointing NBN rollout that has “stiffed” Narre Warren South residents in a form of “node-lotto”. Three years ago, Steve Barnes happily posed with then-Communications Minister Mr Turnbull who announced a local NBN rollout in the area, long known as Casey’s biggest internet black-spot. Mr Barnes was hopeful that after 12 years of campaigning, he and his neighbours’ homes would finally get decent internet. But on 12 March, Mr Barnes - an IT worker and cabler - wrote to Mr Turnbull in frustration. “We ended up being stiffed by NBN Co,” Mr Barnes wrote to Mr Turnbull. “Looking around the surrounding neighborhood you will find that the Nodes have been placed next to their respective pillar to get the best possible outcome for households that are connected. “That is not so with our area and we could be forgiven for thinking that this was an intentional act due to our campaign.” Mr Barnes called on Mr Turnbull to intervene - after failed approaches to NBN Co and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield. One of the suggested solutions was for Mr Barnes to pay $600 for a quote on a possible technology change. To get fibre straight to his premises would cost Mr Barnes about $20,000. “If they put the node where it was meant to be, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Put simply, internet speeds are slower because the node cabinet is too far from residents’ home. Instead a cabinet was built more than 500 metres away in Parkwood Avenue, somewhere in between the housing estate’s two pillars. It has resulted in sluggish download speeds of around 25 Mega bits per second in Mr Barnes’ home - the NBN Co’s minimum threshold and well below the national 70Mbps average. Had a node cabinet been built next to the pillar, residents would receive speeds closer to 100 Mbps, he said. Of about 1000 residents in the estate, Mr Barnes estimates only 20 were getting “full speed”. Mr Barnes has vigorously campaigned for better internet since 2003. Until the NBN rollout last year, the estate didn’t even have ADSL broadband because it was about five kilometres from the telephone exchange. “My concern is five years from now is that the speed won’t be good enough anymore. “To be without internet for 14 years and then be stuck with a dinosaur - it’s almost like they did it deliberately.”

A new era set to dawn? By Russell Bennett AFL South East's plan for a three-division, promotion-relegation competition in 2019 featuring the current Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League and South East Football Netball League is dead in the water. But the AFL Yarra Ranges has stepped forward as a potential new home for the eight SEFNL clubs currently staring down the barrel of an uncertain future. AFL Yarra Ranges, which currently has a stable two-tier, promotion-relegation system, has been in discussions with the SEFNL clubs to explore what a three-division competition could look like in the near future. One option is that the top five of the SEFNL in 2018 and the top five of AFL Yarra Ranges' first division could form a mouthwatering top tier in 2019. Last year the top five of the AFL Yarra Ranges' Division 1 included premier Olinda Ferny Creek, runner-up Woori Yallock, Healesville, Wandin, and Upwey Tecoma. Putting that into context, Healesville is roughly an hour's drive from Cranbourne. Though the likes of Tooradin-Dalmore and Thornton Eildon are more than two hours apart, the creation of a third, stand-alone division featuring the northern AFL Yarra Ranges and smaller clubs would limit travel times. One of the biggest positives for SEFNL clubs is how well their netball arms would also fit into the AFL Yarra Ranges competition. An AFL South East memo sent to media outlets on Thursday last week acknowledged that plans to include SENFL and MPNFL clubs in a promotion-relegation league had been scrapped. "AFL South East (AFLSE) will continue to strive to build a strong and vibrant divisional structure on the Mornington Peninsula after informing the 22 MPNFL clubs that it will no longer pursue a model that includes clubs from the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) in 2019," the memo read. "Recommendations to emerge from AFLSE's Senior Competition Review were for MPNFL clubs to form a two-tier divisional structure in 2018, with the eight SEFNL clubs to join forces to form a three-tier promotionrelegation competition next year. "But at a meeting on February 26, the AFLSE Commission discussed the status of the senior competition review, which included the outcome of a special general meeting of MPNFL clubs who passed a motion that would require 75% of clubs to vote in favour of any proposed changes to the MPNFL competition structure. "The Commission decision is to continue with its initial structures for 2018, but halt plans for the merge of MPNFL and SEFNL clubs in 2019." AFLSE Region General Manager John Anderson acknowledged that the decision not to include the SEFNL in promotion-relegation for 2019 wasn't ideal, but added it wouldn't stop the overall objective of growing football in the region. "We will now work closely with the MPNFL clubs on the creation of a third division, within the geographic constraints of the Peninsula," he said. "Until such time whereby three divisions are possible, the MPNFL will comprise two divisions with promotion and relegation between both." Anderson has since met with the eight SEFNL clubs and said the early discussions with them surrounding 2019 were "extremely positive". gion, and we look forward to working closely with the SEFNL clubs to achieve this objective," he said. Anderson's counterpart at AFL Yarra Ranges, Aaron Bailey, said his region is currently undertaking a review of its senior and junior structures, with a focus on ensuring the sustainability of the northern and smaller clubs in the region (like Thornton Eildon and Yea). There are some who envisage a power struggle emerging between AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges over the possible new competition. But Bailey said: "AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges are utilizing a 'best for footy' approach here. We have removed the borders and asked the question 'is there a solution here that can achieve long term stability for the region'?" Under the scenario proposed to both AFL Yarra Ranges and SEFNL clubs, the third division would be comprised of the clubs from the AFL Yarra Ranges second tier, in particular those in the northern border and Upper Yarra
regions. The proposal put forward to clubs would see the most northern trip for SEFNL clubs being Yarra Glen or Healesville, with travel times varying between 15 minutes to an hour. Though Bailey emphasised that these are preliminary discussions at this stage, he added: "This has great potential for both competitions that are so closely aligned in footy and netball to create a multi-divisional competition in the region. "We are very early in the process. "We're working to provide the SEFNL clubs with one of many options to play their football and netball in 2019. It is important they make the best decision for their club, community and future. "We believe this is a really good fit. The current proposal allows for both long-term growth in the region and a really good competitive balance in both footy and netball."
Gillespie’s Gulls are aiming to soar high in 2018 By Nick Creely Tooradin-Dalmore coach Lachie Gillespie said it last year, and he’ll say it again - the club won’t accept anything less than a finals appearance. The Gulls finished two wins behind Doveton in fifth last year, and Gillespie said that the pain of 2017 has definitely driven his troops to reach greater heights this season. “Last year, we had high expectations and it didn’t fall our way, but we learnt a lot; you learn a lot from your failures, we got a lot out of last season,” he said. “There is no ceiling, I feel like our expectations are all that matters, I won’t put a ceiling on the boys; we’re ready, we’re primed and finals are a must for us, but I said that last year. “We feel like we’ve definitely improved, for sure.” The Gulls have lost Nick Jansen, Josh Muling, Nathan Page, as well as both Setanta and Aisakie O’Hailpin, but have gained some 30 STAR NEWS

“We’ve been lucky; we’ve lost a couple of good players, but on good terms, and we’ve gained a few; the players we’ve gained are in positions we probably think we’re lacking,” he said. “We’ve got a more even spread, we’ve got a good list and I’m hoping we can do some really good things this year.” Gillespie warned his side have tinkered their brand slightly, and will be looking to gain more respect from rival clubs. “Tooradin’s a funny one, speaking to other clubs, everyone probably thinks we’ve got potential, but at the same time probably haven’t gained full respect because we haven’t had the wins on the board,” he said. “Last year, we had a particular style we wanted to play, but probably couldn’t voice that, and for the players to understand; in the last half of last year we found where we needed to be, and we now have a particular style that we think will suit our players, and even more
so because we’ve kept the same core group together. “We now know what we’re good at it, and what we need to work on.” The Gulls will be captained by Matt Livermore, with Nick Lang, Andrew Dean and Jake O’Donnell forming an exciting leadership group. But it’s the youngsters that excite Gillespie the most, with some of their local juniors ready to take the plunge into bona fide senior players. “Our core group has been fantastic, our leaders have been brilliant, but some kids that have come up have really stood out, such as Kris Sabbatucci, Brad Lenders, Nick Schumann, those kinds of guys, they’re looking primed and ready to go,” he said. “I’m excited about our young list, and it’s fantastic to be in a position that the growth of our list is nice; to have this local bunch, it’s really exciting.” cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

There are amazing opportunities, and then there are once in a lifetime opportunities. For Tooradin-raised swimmer Josh Beaver, competing at a Commonwealth Games on home soil is a once in a lifetime opportunity one that has driven him to be the very best he could possibly be. "That was something leading into the trials I had in the back of my mind and something that once I was selected, it was a feeling of 'I'm finally going to compete at a home competition'." Beaver said. "I'm really just looking forward to stepping up behind the blocks knowing that I've got the support of my family, friends and coaching staff, as well as the whole of Australia behind me - I'm really looking forward to that moment." For Beaver - a backstroke specialist - it hasn't always been smooth sailing. In 2012, Beaver missed out on Olympic selection by two tenths of a second. But instead of hanging his head, he used that disappointment as motivation to improve and reach new heights. "That was a goal and dream that I had and I realised that I hadn't quite reached it, which meant I had to re-set for another four years." Beaver said. "I really got back into it as soon as I could and I didn't necessarily take a step back, I took a step forward in learning a lot of things from that disappointing moment." "I learnt a lot of things about myself and learnt a lot of things about the sport. What I wanted to do was not make the same mistakes I did that previous four years to allow me to make the 2016 Olympic team." Competing at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games was a dream come true for Beaver - one that he still can't quite put into words. "The emotions behind it are really hard to explain." Beaver said. "It was a surreal feeling. I work in four year blocks and every moment of that four year block was aimed at that one moment of being
selected onto the team and getting the opportunity to represent my country at the Olympics." Now with his sights firmly set on the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Beaver will take lessons learnt from his successful 2014 campaign - a campaign that saw him take home two silver medals and a bronze. "I never really went into the 2014 Glasgow Games with an expectation and I've tried to not put an expectation on a home Commonwealth Games as well - that seemed to work for me in 2014, so there's no reason why I can't replicate what I did in 2014." Beaver said. "This time on the Gold Coast, obviously with the home crowd advantage and 12,000 people on your side, it's going to be a pretty surreal feeling." Beaver will compete in the 200m backstroke at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, which begins on April 4th.

By Nick Creely and Hayley Wildes Casey-South Melbourne lost its final game of the season against the Camberwell Magpies on the weekend, but still avoided finishing last on the Victorian Premier Cricket table. The Magpies quickly raced down the Swans' 165 on day one, crossing the target five wickets down after champion batsman Simon Hill (77) batted beautifully. The Swans were made to sweat it out in the heat, with the home side batting on and peppering the boundaries, before skipper Tom Russ called his troops in on 9/281. Youngster Joel Mitchell (53) capped off an extremely promising season with a hard fought half century to finish the game, with the Swans ending on 3/106 before the game was called. Michael Wallace (24) and Ryan Eaton (23) also made runs for the Swans. It was more of a promising end to the season in the seconds for Jordan Wyatt, who cracked 102 in their second innings at Casey Fields despite already conceding on the first innings. The Swans lost in the thirds and fourths as well, in what was a disappointing end to the season. Meanwhile, in their Victorian Sub-District Cricket quarter-final, Noble Park truly felt the wrath of a fired up Bayswater unit on the weekend, with the Parkers simply demolished. Things were looking positive for the Parkers early on day one, with seamer Andy Berman (4/43) inspiring an early collapse, leaving the 'Roos 3/4 and in dire trouble. Travis Nightindale (90) was superb, fighting back brilliantly in terrific partnerships with Tyson Smith (26), Jack Pollard (22) and Josh Hudson (22), to guide the home side to a competitive 209. In the Mornington Peninsula's Provincial division, Pearcedale finished its season on a high, despite missing the finals. Taking on Crib Point, Pearcedale's openers were irresistible. Brad Trotter (80) and William Kennedy (75) combined for a brilliant opening partnership of 141. To Crib Point's credit, they were able to turn things around - taking the next eight wickets
for 69 runs and holding the Panthers to 8/210. It wasn't enough though as a ruthless bowling display from the Panthers - led by Jake Roberts (3/18) - dismissed Crib Point for just 133 runs. Langwarrin, meanwhile, solidified its place as the team to beat heading into finals with a win over Mornington. Sent into bat, Langwarrin struggled as early wickets fell, finding themselves at 2/3. Crucial innings' from Sam Prosser (31) and Taylor Smith (25) ensured a defendable total of 8/144 was reached. Mornington's Ryan McDonald (3/16) was a constant threat with the ball. Langwarrin's bowling attack - led by Sam Prosser (2/13), Adam Campbell (2/13) and Jake Prosser (2/15) - was too much for Mornington as they were dismissed for just 106. Lions and Demons run riot on the semi final stage By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely Tooradin and Cardinia are once again left on the outside looking in during WGCA Premier grand final week as Pakenham and Kooweerup showed, once again, they have all the answers when they need them most. At Denhams Road, the Demons restricted their famous old rivals from Cardinia for 178 on day one - a competitive, but hardly overwhelming score. Jess Mathers and Mark Cooper again took hold with the ball for Kooweerup, snaring six wickets between them, while Cardinia captain-coach Alex Nooy (60) and Ben Parrott (42) were forced to make the walk back to the sheds at the most inopportune times. A string of quick wickets through the middle and lower orders left Aidan Nooy (26 not out) to provide the last piece of resistance, but the Demons had the answers again. On day two, Cooper was simply devastating against the last WGCA Premier side he led. Particularly aggressive against the likes of Kallan Braid-Ball, Matt Welsh, and Dwayne Doig, Cooper (84) ensured from the outset that the Bulls couldn't get any legitimate look-in particularly with a steadfast Chris O'Hara (26) at the other end in their 81-run opening stand. From there, Lachie Ramage maintained his composure in a cool, calm, and collected innings of 30 while Chris Bright (27 not out) made good on his Sunday morning prediction that he'd bring up the winning runs with a six (at 4/179). Meanwhile, nearby at Rutter Park, a vocal crowd saw Pakenham once again prove a class above Tooradin. The Gulls were impressive at times through their day one innings, particularly during the partnership between Brenton Adams (55) and Aaron Avery (38) in the sweltering heat, but the cold hard reality remained - the side still couldn't see out its full 80 overs, dismissed for 198 early in the 78th. As he so often does, Lions skipper Dom Paynter stood up right when he needed to snaring 5/36 from a super-impressive 20 overs. Cavs step up to the plate Casey Basketball Association is working with several organisations to launch and implement a new community development program. The program is being designed to identify talented young athletes in the local area with a low socio-economic background and provide them with elite level training to help them reach their potential. A major step forward with the program was the recent listing of Oyiti Amum in the Casey Cavaliers Youth League team. He has come out of the Red Roo program - where all athletes are only permitted to join if they are enrolled in education, work or actively seeking work. Oyiti is currently working around the clock to help support the everyday life of his family. Recognising his need for support, Melbourne United centre Majok Majok and the entire playing group have banded together to support Oyiti and sponsor him for the upcoming 2018 Big V season. Oyiti is a hard-working, talented young athlete with a great attitude and strong determination. He fits the bill when it comes to the Casey Cavaliers' values, and the association looks forward to seeing what he can achieve on the court in 2018. Casey Basketball is actively seeking support from businesses that would like to get involved with the new community development program through funding to help reach their target. If the target amount is achieved, the program will run at its highest capacity. HAMPTON PARK BOWLS The Hampton Park Division 1, six-a-side outfit did the club proud when it won the Section 4 semi-final and followed that up with a win in the final. In the section semi-final Lou Soligo, Janice Collins and skip Marion Battaglia had a great 10-shot win (23-13) while Brian Diaper, Ron Beverly and skip Rob Woff did even better with a 17-shot win (29-12). The section final was played at Waverley Golf on a very good green against Pakenham. What a game it turned out to be. The result was not known until the last bowl was measured, with Hampton Park getting up by just one shot overall. Stuart Tokley, Ron Beverly and skip Rob Woff held on to finish with a draw (17-17) while Lou Soligo, Janice Collins and skip Marion Battaglia got up on the last end by one shot. Hampton Park 33 defeated Pakenham 32. MIDWEEK PENNANT The season is over for the Midweek Pennant Division 2 side, which finished sixth on the ladder with nine wins and nine losses. In their last game against the top side Mulgrave Country Club, the Parkers outplayed by a far better side. Ian Kitt, Toni Sutton, Helen Lambert and skip Denise Eastick had a horror day, going down by 22 shots (13-35), while Richard Pallett, Shane Collins, Andrew Brandolin and skip Neville Hendrie dropped a seven near the end to go down by nine shots (20-29). Geoff Ladner, Stuart Tokley, Ellen Smith and skip Christine Hendrie fought it out to the finish, missing by just two shots (20-22). Hampton Park 0-53 lost to Mulgrave Country Club 16-86. The Division 1 six-a-side outfit had a very good season, finishing second, and will be playing finals. They won 14 games, lost four and had two byes. Brian Diaper, Ron Beverly and skip Rob Woff led all day (26-17) while Lou Soligo, Janice Collins and skip Marion Battaglia also led from the start (24-16). It was a tough year for the Saturday Pennant Division 2 side with five wins, 12 losses and a draw. The Parkers finished seventh with five of their losses by eight shots or less. CRANBOURNE BOWLS Going undefeated for a whole season is no easy feat. Think of all the great AFL sides in living memory and try and come up with one side that has won every game throughout the season, and you will come up blank. But not Cranbourne's Side 4, six-a-side lawn bowls team, which has achieved what was thought to be the unachievable. This side has not lost a game for the entire bowling season and capped off the year by winning the semi-final against Dandenong Club on Saturday and then the Grand Final against Willow Lodge on Sunday to give them the Pennant victory. Skip Scott Di Piazza, handicapped by playing in a wheelchair, was simply outstanding during the year - inspiring his teammates to play at their best. In the finals new bowler Dennis Tomlin led the way and played like a seasoned veteran and was well backed up by John Forsythe, who was always on target.

The Division 4 side won six of their last seven games to come from the bottom of the ladder to fifth spot with eight wins, nine losses and a bye. This was a great effort by the Parkers' second side. Their last game was against Edithvale, in which they scraped home by just one shot. Val Simpson, Bill Webb, Marion Battaglia and skip Denise Eastick lost by 15 shots (17-32), while Vince Kovacic, Brian Diaper, Ron Beverly and skip Rob Woff got up by eight shots (22-14). Richard Pallett, Ian Kitt, Ellen Smith and skip Toni Sutton went down by seven Shots (15-22). The big winners for the day were Janice Collins, Dave Clarke, Stan Hatch and skip Ken Cobden with a 15-shot win on their rink (30-15). Hampton Park 14-84 to Edithvale 4-83.
Skip Rob Sorensen crushed the opposition all year and in the finals he was not holding back with a great display of leadership and very accurate draw bowling. His team was well led in the finals by Brian Turton and his second Frank Coulter played some great bowls that put the opposition under constant pressure at all times. Congratulations to the other bowlers who played in this side during the year and who also contributed to this great victory. The Ladies' Division 1 bowlers had a battle on their hands in the semi Final against Pakenham and at the lunch break they were looking at an upset loss, but they came back determined to play in another grand final and ran out winners in the end. With the disappointment of being runnersup in the past few years, the players really want to win this one. Cranbourne will now play off in the Grand Final against Edithvale on Tuesday.
