“I love that I get to be creative every day and help businesses really showcase who they are and what they stand for,” she says.

Cheryl chose the heraldic symbol of the bird when launching Martlette Graphic Design six years ago to provide high-quality designs on time for clients.

“We're known for keeping projects on track for clients,” Cheryl says That commitment won a category on debut at the 2017 business excellence awards.

“Winning Micro Business of the Year gave Martlette huge exposure to the Geelong businesses community,” Cheryl says The entry process also provided "fantastic feedback and useful, constructive advice".

Awards’ big launch The Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards has entered its 33rd year of showcasing local businesses epitomising outstanding performance.

An initiative of Geelong Chamber of Commerce, the 2018 awards officially launched last week with at North Geelong’s The Federal Cafe, Restaurant and Bar. Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief Bernadette Uzelac was excited about the awards’ new partnership with Deakin University.

D and Co Design creative director Kate Dewey loves the challenge of working with different clients.

Branding ‘success’ For Belmont graphic designer and brand strategist Kate Dewey nothing beats helping others achieve “their version of success.”

Whether working with media companies, politicians or timber providers, Kate relishes the challenge of meeting their design needs.

“I love when I’m working with a client and they say, ‘that’s exactly what we wanted, you’ve hit the nail on the head.’”

Kate started her own business, D & Co Studio a little over three years ago, after several years running a business with her then-hus-

band before they split.

She has more than a decade of industry experience but was “not financially savvy nor business savvy”, she admits.

“When you start your own business you don’t know what you don’t know.”

That was where the Geelong Business Excellence Awards came in.

Kate entered her business last year and made the finals of the Emerging Business category.

But meeting the judges and experts who gave “another perspective” was more important for Kate.

“It’s actually been a big growth process,“ she says.

“It really shines a light on what you’re doing incredibly well and things you can address and improve on.”

She looks forward to again getting great advice and a clear picture of her progress to date.

“And maybe an award - that would be nice!” she says.

Clothing company Oishi-m has continued its meteoric rise after winning the Geelong Business Excellence Award, moving to a new and improved Torquay headquarters.

“It’s been a really big year with the win,” says owner Miyo Fallshaw.

“We’ve put it all over social media and everything but it’s amazing how many people from everywhere have mentioned it.”

One of last year’s judges actually suggested the move, which to Miyo shows what the awards are all about - helping businesses grow.

“They said we might need to consider a bigger premises to accommodate our growth,” the Bellbrae mum says. “At first we thought ‘no we’re fine.’”

But her store got so crowded with customers and prams after the big win Miyo realised the judge “might be onto something.”

Winning the Retail Business award in her debut entry in 2016 gave Miyo and the Oishim team an in-depth look at “every facet” of her business.

And Oishi-m made so many improvements after its first entry it had to totally rewrite the application for its triumphant second attempt, Miyo explains.

The company makes the majority of its clothes in Australia - its biggest retail market.

While online business is thriving, Oishi-m’s new Torquay store attracts customers from all over Australia and New Zealand.

“We even had a customer fly into Avalon from Tassie for a new release, and then she got back on the plane once she bought her goods,” Miyo says.

How long have you been a lawyer for?

I've been practicing law for more than 40 years.

What are some of your achievements?

I've represented clients in a variety of matters, from the preparation of wills and powers of attorney to large, complex legal disputes involving large sums of money. I've successfully defended clients on charges including murder, manslaughter and corporate crime.

I hold a Bachelors of Jurisprudence degree, I'm a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Supreme Court of Victoria commissioner.

State creates jobs

The RIF provides public grant funding for four program streams: Visitor Economy, Productive and Liveable Cities and Centres, Enabling Infrastructure, and Rural Development.

Geelong will soon see more police on the streets, with an additional 29 police officers above attrition the rate due to hit the beat over

the next year as the Andrews Labor Government continues to deliver the biggest boost to police resources in history.

These 29 new officers come on top of 10 positions allocated last year to Geelong as part of the first deployment.

This also comes on top of 23 police custody officers working at Geelong Police Station, and 15 new officers deployed to Geelong and Bellarine police stations in 2015.

I am looking forward to seeing the nominations for the 2018 Deakin University Geelong Business Excellence Awards.

When the Indy last spoke to Christine in 2017 she had built two homes in Ocean Grove.

“This pool has two hoist systems, which allows guests to use the pool for therapeutic reasons or for fun,” she explains.

“Each time we build the homes in a slightly different way, based on guests' feedback.“ And guests are enjoying the pool if their testimonials are anything to go by.

“Last night was the first time (my partner Bruce and I) were able to have a swim together,” says Di Morrison.

“We’re so thankful for this experience. We both love the water but it's hard to find accessible ways to enjoy that together.

"These homes have been set up with heart.”

Great Ocean Stays is a National Disability Insurance Agency provider, with Christine advocating statewide for people with disability via speaking roles.

Gang attack on rail track

Mum’s dinner date for cure

A cure for cystic fibrosis (CF) would “mean the absolute world” for Belinda Narwar’s two youngest children Caden and Indie.

The Highton mother urged locals to attend an upcoming Geelong gala dinner, which has raised more than $100,000 for CF research over the past two years.

“We’re trying to do something to make it better for our kids rather than just sitting there and hoping,” she said.

Even the common cold could be dangerous for her two youngest children, who take 15 tablets and attend physio each day, Belinda said.

“We have to be careful attending parties and other social events,” she said.

Caden, 6, was only 24-hours-old when underwent his first major surgery for bowel complications resulting from CF.

He has had four operations since.

But Indie, 3, has coped better with the condition, thanks partly to her brother’s brave example. “Indie gets to see Caden and see how he deals with it - she just copies what he does,” Belinda said.

“He says, ‘come here Indie you’ve got to stand here and let the doctor do this.’ It’s nice that they’ve got that bond and can help each other through difficult times.”

By Luke Voogt Geelong women are carving new paths into male-dominated trades despite some businesses dragging their feet with “old-fashioned attitudes”, according to an industry advocate.

Geelong Technical Education Centre industry liaison officer Linda Kelly said some companies were barring women from work based on their gender.

“We still have some big organisations that say, ’no I’m not going to put a female on because they’re too much trouble.’

“It makes me think, ‘You’ve probably got a daughter or niece - why can’t they have an opportunity? Maybe they think their young apprentices are going to flirt - I don’t know.”

Companies often cited amenities as an

excuse for not employing women tradies, Ms Kelly said.

“I went to a Geelong spray painting company who said they would have to clean out their female toilets because that’s where they keep the old tins of paint. An electricity company said we only have portable toilets but we share our toilets with our brothers at home, so we don’t care.”

Women were also more resilient to workplace banter than some people thought, Ms Kelly said.

“But sometimes that banter gets a bit carried away.”

Some council and business workplaces needed to “move with the times”, Ms Kelly said.

Teen’s hair-razing challenge St Albans Park teen Bianca Grima will join thousands of Australians shaving their hair for leukaemia research next Thursday - a year since her grandfather died.

“On 22 March 2017, my grandfather, best friend and my number one fan, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep,” the 15-year-old said.

“My grandfather might not have passed from leukaemia, but he passed and now I understand how it feels to lose the one you love - to have your world ripped into pieces.

“I will be shaving my head, for those struck by the deadly illness of blood cancer and in support their families too.”

The Newcomb Secondary College student has raised $1500 so far and will shave her hair in front of her entire school.

Victoria Police have refused to specify when Geelong’s top cop will return from his threemonth absence following revelations of a dispute in the force’s command.

A spokesperson yesterday declined to comment on reports Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard had been entangled in a row with Assistant Commissioner Tess Walsh and another senior officer.

“Superintendent Gillard remains on sick leave at this point in time,” the spokesperson said.

“We will not speculate on when he might return. We are however committed to resolving this as quickly as possible.

“Victoria Police is working hard to resolve a workplace dispute involving three members of the management team in the western region of Victoria, which encompasses Geelong.”

The spokesperson declined to comment on the nature of the dispute.

According to reports Superintendent Gillard was under pressure last year to pull then Surf Coast Shire Mayor and senior police officer Brian McKiterick into line over the councillor’s opposition to flying the rainbow flag at the shire’s offices.

Supt Gillard’s reluctance to do so reportedly led to the row with the Assistant Commisioner.

Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay slammed Victorian Police Minister Lisa Neville for the Geelong police command “crisis” which had arisen from the dispute.

“The Member for Bellarine and Police Minister is overseeing this,” he said. “This is her job. This is her patch.“

Lara’s fever threat ‘real’

CCTV snaps ‘armed robber’ Police are hunting a suspected armed robber who allegedly held up a Point Lonsdale general store with an edged weapon on Saturday morning.

Witnesses told police the male entered the premises armed with the weapon around 8.30am.

He allegedly threatened an attendant and demanded cash until a delivery driver disturbed him when entering from the rear of the shop, policed said The male fled the shop through nearby school grounds, police said.

A planned Lara goat farm poses a "serious" risk of a Q fever outbreak among residents, Geelong scientists have warned.

The director of Barwon Health's infectious diseases department, Eugene Athan, said the chronic version of the disease had a five to 10 per cent mortality rate.

"The risks are small if the goat herd is free of infection, but still serious."

But the disease was easily treatable with oral antibiotics, Prof Athan said.

Prof Athan added the concerns of the No Nuchev Campaign, who have gathered more than 2400 signatures against the proposal, were "only legitimate" if the herd was contaminated.

Geelong microbiologist John Stenos said a "freak incident" could cause an outbreak in Lara.

"If it gets introduced it may be a problem," Prof Stenos said.

"The chances of the population around the farm acquiring the infection are quite small.

If you're more than two kilometres away the chances are very small. You're more likely to get it from the natural environment."

Prof Stenos worked at a goat farm in Meredith to help contain a Q fever outbreak in 2015.

"There were plenty of people who worked at the farm who contracted the disease but the spread to the general population was non-existent, to my knowledge."

Prof Stenos has previously worked with Nuchev, the company behind the planned farm in Lara.

The company had never developed an animal

vaccine because its goats had never contracted the disease - a prerequisite for developing a vaccine for a specific herd, Prof Stenos explained.

"They are monitoring the herd very closely," he said. "If it's not monitored it can become a huge risk but I think they're one of the few places I've worked with that have put in precautions before it appears. If they're sensible and have the right measures in place it shouldn't happen."

Q fever causes flu-like symptoms in humans and in rare cases can cause heart and liver problems.

Prof Stenos suggested Nuchev could fund human vaccinations for Lara residents as a gesture of goodwill.

Last week at City Hall Lara mother Leanne Rupene cried as she shared her fear that Q fever could be fatal to her one-year-old child, who has a heart condition.

Prof Stenos' colleague at the Australian Rickettsial Reference Laboratory, Stephen Graves, said people with existing health conditions had a higher chance of getting chronic Q fever.

"She has reason to be concerned - but that is true for most bacterial infections."

The Federal Department of Health recommends against vaccinating children under 15 against Q fever because there is no safety data on the vaccine for that age group.

"When the (human) vaccine was developed 30 years ago it was never tested on children (as it) was intended for farm workers," Prof Graves said.

"I've vaccinated plenty of children (against Q fever) - from my limited experience it seems perfectly safe to use."

‘Reunion’ of ’58 wedding Donald and Beryl Breguet still remember the day they got married at the Werribee Methodist Church on 1 March 1958.

“It’s like it happened yesterday,” Donald, 83, mused last Friday from the couple’s Lara home.

“There was a warm north wind,” added his wife, 79.

The pair relived the day as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last Thursday in Geelong - with the very people who helped them tie the knot.

Their whole wedding party, still alive, travelled from as far Swan Hill to help the couple celebrate their diamond anniversary at the Lord Nelson Hotel.

“I think it’s so fabulous, the oldest is 86,” Beryl said. “The flower girl was only two and now she’s 62!

“We laughed a lot because a lot of them didn’t know each other.”

“It was an absolutely wonderful evening,” Donald agreed. “Some hadn’t seen each other since the wedding.”

The couple first met in primary school, but were fated to meet again, Donald explained.

“There was a gap from when I first met her and when we got together,” he said.

“My best friend was Beryl’s cousin so it was inevitable our paths would cross.”

They began going to dances at Lara, Little River and Geelong and Donald kept Beryl company as she worked on her family’s farm.

“She had a hard life - she had to milk the cows, feed the chicks...” he said.

Donald’s car sweetened the deal, according to some ribbing from his friends.

“They used to joke, ’how could you resist a young bloke who had an Austin A40 convertible?’” he said.

The couple drove the car to the Carlton Hotel in Geelong for their wedding night and then up the coast to Adelaide.

“That was our honeymoon car,” Beryl said.

Donald worked at the Werribee water works and took extra jobs to “get ahead”. The couple went on to have four children, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

They moved to Clifton Springs in 1989 before shifting to Lara five years ago.

Donald credits their successful marriage to Beryl’s good nature.

“She doesn’t go off the handle,” she said. “In all the years we’ve been married we’ve never had a blue.”

Their advice for young couples was simple.

“Never go to bed angry with each other,” Donald said.

DOUBLE TAKE Geelong secondary students have hopefully enjoyed the irony in the title of a new program on the risks of underage boozy behaviour.

Melbourne’s The Alfred hospital delivered the cleverly-named program in local schools this week with the help of Barwon Health, ambos and police.

The Alfred’s Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth seems like an innocuousenough title at first blush.

That is until it’s presented as an acronym and becomes PARTY. According to Barwon Health, 400 local year 11 students enjoyed the three-day PARTY program this week.

Hopefully the message sunk in for the kids because it sure wouldn’t for any adult after three days of partying!

Ironic title aside, PARTY had a serious message for its young program participants.

And considering the number of needless tragedies to strike the local youth community in recent years - think road accidents, assaults, mental health impacts - it’s a message that needs to sink in deep.

“Trauma”, often associated with risky teenage business, accounted for two thirds of deaths in the 15-to-25-years age group, The Alfred highlighted.

“The consequences of taking risks can be lifelong, for the victims and families,” stressed The Alfred’s Dr Joseph Mathew.

So PARTY hard kids, but play it safe at the actual parties.

A team of Geelong researchers might have come up with a novel solution to the embattled recycling market after a unique technology trial in the Solomon Islands, of all places.

The Deakin University team overcame “cyclonic conditions and rain” to demonstrate they could use solar-powered 3D printers to turn plastic rubbish into important plumbing parts.

Apparently the Solomons are, err, flush with mismatched pipes, which causes all sorts of sanita-

tion and water-conservation issues.

But the Deakin team managed to print parts that fitted various requirements, turning “trash into treasure” while also striking a minor blow against the islands’ litter scourge. Nice work!

Now back from the jungle, maybe the researchers can turn their attention to our mounting mound of unwanted plastic courtesy of a downturn in Chinese demand for Australian recyclables.

Although, to paraphrase Jaws’ Police Chief Brody, they’re gonna need a bigger printer!

Meanwhile, and back onto public safety, Geelong's TAC HQ wants road users awake to the dangers of drowsiness.

The TAC this week urged drivers to stay alert this long weekend, traditionally a danger period with more traffic and motorists covering long distances.

“We’re imploring motorists to rest up the night before and allow plenty of time to get to their destinations,” said the TAC’s Samantha Cockfield.

“On a long road trip you should factor in a rest stop every two hours to swap drivers or recharge. If you’re feeling fatigued you start to lose focus but you can avoid a tragedy if you take a break.”

An extra 28 police will hit the streets of Geelong as part of 12-month rollout of 825 new officers, the State Government has announced.

Police Minister Lisa Neville announced the allocation alongside Premier Daniel Andrews and Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton on Monday.

“The safety of our local community is key and we’ve listened to police to give them everything they need - the resources, the technology and the powers - to keep the community safe,” she said.

The Geelong allocation included eight sworn police in specialist family violence roles, which Ms Neville said would free up other officers.

Police attend a family violence incident every seven minutes in Victoria, according to police statistics.

The deployment will begin in May, with the State Government expecting the last of the 825 officers to be working by April 2019.

The State Government has promised to fund 3135 extra officers over four years, describing the pledge as biggest recruitment effort in Victoria Police’s 165-year history.

Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay described the new police as “overdue” given the “explosion in crime in the region”.

“The allocation is still not enough and should have been closer to 40 more, on top of the 10 allocated last year,” the Liberal MP said.

“The latest police allocation is already not keeping pace with the population growth in the Geelong (and the) Bellarine (Peninsula).“ Mr Ramsay called for stricter sentencing, a measure backed by shadow police minister Ed O’Donohue.

Art and soul for Anne, 90

By Luke Voogt Anne Bell’s 85-year artistic journey began at age five with a special gift from her grandmother, Catherine McKenzie.

“At Christmas time I had a granny who gave me a tube of paints and off I went,” said the Belmont local, who will turn 90 during her latest exhibit.

Even at an early age, growing up in East Gippsland, Anne knew painting was her calling.

“I announced to a very startled pair of parents - who were very good farmers but far from any form of visual arts - I was going to be an artist,” she said.

“And that’s exactly what I’ve done.”

Her love of art grew during home schooling by correspondence and learning to spell words.

“If the word was cat you drew a cat beside it,” she said. “That kind of illustration starts something.”

Anne shone as a child prodigy at the Royal Melbourne Show, entering the adult pastel section after winning under 12 art prizes. “(I) took that as well!” she said. “It was quite a shock!”

She became a teacher but had to give up the profession for several years after the birth of her first child in 1955.

“I came through at the time when if you were pregnant, and you had even the slightest bump, you had to resign,” she said.

But she continued her artistic pursuits, selling paintings overseas and even to a ballistic missile engineer in Alice Springs, while her

husband worked there as a padre.

“I’m certainly not a grandma Moses!” she said.

“I’ve had more than seven years training (in art) - longer than the average GP!” But Anne has nothing but respect for modern medicine and the doctors who have kept her painting through cataract surgery on both her eyes.

“I couldn’t even hazard a guess how many paintings I’ve done - hundreds,” she said.

“You’ve got a modern 90-year-old here - I’ve never been busier in my lifetime. Oh wait - yes I have - when I had five children.

“I’m going to paint as long as my sight and my health carry me.”

She will display 56 paintings, many of them new, at Shearers Arms Gallery from 18 March to 15 April as the Geelong Art Society’s Artist of the Month.

The exhibition tells Anne’s life story in paint and shows her love for the unique landscapes of Australia.

“I know Australia very well,” she said. “My husband and I have caravanned all the main roads.”

But most of all, Anne hopes her story can get some support for her beloved Geelong Art Society.

“It’s a very, very valuable asset,” she said.

“We don’t get the coverage that footballers and sportspeople get.”

Age is no barrier to art or following a life passion, she adds.

“We’ve got a lot of interesting 90-year-olds doing things.”

LETTERS Green jobs powering city It was great news that Tango Energy, the retailer arm of Pacific Hydro, will open in Geelong and employing 87 staff (Geelong Indy, 2 March).

As a regional hub, Geelong could have a very important role in the clean-energy jobs boom that will enrich western Victoria with the Victorian renewable energy target.

Clean energy is the next industrial revolution and we need to get on board.

Tim Sinclair (Letters, 2 March) labelled environmentalists Luddites, yet it is so-called greenies supporting clean, modern energy sources like wind, solar and the new Tesla battery in South Australia.

Meanwhile, the Liberals support the 19th Century technology of burning coal.

Victoria’s Hazelwood power station was 50 years old when it closed in March, so who is the real Luddite, stuck in the past?

Hitting the gas I assume the figures of Alan Barron (Letters, 26 February) for an annual output of 1839.6GWh for the AGL-built gas-fired power plant were correct but could find no verification for his renewable-energy figure.

Stating that the cost of the coal-fired plant was one seventh that of the renewables was incorrect.

The gas-fired power plant will cost $295 million to build but require a constant supply of gas. Adelaide’s cheapest wholesale gas over the last five years was $.90MWh, so if the output is 1839,600 MWh and each MWh costs a rounded-up $1 in gas then the fuel costs are likely to be $1,839,600 per annum.

However, even energy companies concede that only about 50 per cent of energy from natural gas can be converted into electricity, so fuel costs effectively double to $3.7 billion.

Add in the cost of construction and the true cost of the energy generated becomes a fraction under $4 billion.

As for Mr Barron’s argument about average lifespans, a modern wind turbine lasts approximately 25 years, not 12.

Warranties of 20 or 25 years on solar panels do not indicate they will cease to operate after then. They do degrade but a modern solar panel can operate at 80 per cent efficiency after 25 years, with the latest expected to reach 96 per cent efficiency after the same period.

With continued research and improvement in renewable technology, there’s no reason to expect that solar and wind will not become even more efficient.

Strength in Community As paedophilia is popping up all over the place, I suppose it would be a good idea to boycott where it happens (Letters, 2 March), such as in hospitals, schools, the boy scouts and so on as well as religious institutions.

We may hope that the instance is small in every case compared to the number of good people, so such boycotts should not be necessary, or even sensible. A good strength in all these areas is what is needed.

Banks pay fair share Unlike Gary Oraniuk (Letters, 3 March), I have studied taxation law at tertiary level.

The basis for collecting income tax has been well-established by both constitutional and case law over 117 years.

If Mr Oraniuk has any evidence for his assertions I would be delighted to see it.

The banks are some of our better corporations in terms of paying company tax.

A lot of the avoidance and minimisation mechanisms available to other companies are not open to the banks.

Where’s the cheese objectivity?

I write in reference to Michael J Gamble’s letter in the 23 February Geelong Indy, headlined ‘Cheesed off at vegan fascists’.

Mr Gamble will have to forgive me if I discount his review of vegan cheeses as more than a little biased. His entire ramble seemed like more of an excuse to find something to be angry about rather than anything of any substance.

If Mr Gamble wants to be angry, has too much time on his hands, and owns a computer, all of which seems attributable to him, he should spend a little time looking into how that yummy cheese gets onto his plate.

Then perhaps he will find something worth being angry about.

I recently saw an upmarket store advertising a simple pram for $1869, on special. Spare me.

It was a nice-enough pram but hardly a good buy when I was able to purchase the same model in great condition from a local op shop for $40.

It amazes me so many mothers-to-be, many reliant on social welfare, are prepared to blow vast sums on prams when they can often be picked up for a song from various charities in and around Geelong, sometimes for nothing. It is not love but economic or financial stupidity.

Prams, after all, have, like children’s clothes, a very limited lifetime.

Australia’s custom of driving on the left came from our British heritage.

The Brits have driven on the left since Roman times but no actual law dictated it until it was needed for safe passage across the narrow and congested London Bridge in 1756.

Apparently drivers in America favoured driving on the right because horse riders and drivers of coach teams found it safer when passing others going in the opposite direction.

This stemmed from the majority being righthanded and the tradition of carrying a sword or gun on the left side.

In 1792 driving on the right was formally adopted at a turnpike in Pennsylvania. New York was the first state to approve this rule in 1804.

By the time of the Civil War in the 1860s right-handed driving was legal in every state.

Close to 20 years ago green activist and TV presented David Bellamy declared that global warming was the world’s biggest hoax. Immediately after the BBC announced he was banned from every program in the world, never to be seen again.

Climate of conspiracy Around 10 years ago an ex-CSIRO scientist was asked why we don’t hear scientists speaking out against global warming theory, to which he replied: “It would be detrimental to their job”. He was proven right with the suspensions or banning of Bob, Carter, Bjorn Lomborg and now Peter Ridd from universities around Australia, but the false predictions of Tim Flannery, Al Gore, Michael Mann and the like have never materialised and remain unquestioned.

Is science now nothing more than political?

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (the IPCC) has been exposed as an environmental activist group that has hijacked climate science for its own political agenda.

Historic temperature records have been removed and computer data continually changed in a process of “homogenising the data”.

William Connolley established himself as Wikipedia editor, creating or rewriting 5428 unique Wikipedia articles and removing 500 with which he disagreed on climate change.

Over 2000 Wikipedia contributors ran afoul of Mr Connolley and found themselves blocked.

Eventually he was removed as editor but was later reinstated only to continue his activities.

This is how climate science has been deliberately corrupted and any debate forbidden, which we never hear about in the media.

Bypass Batesford’s ‘dingbats’ I recently attended a meeting to discuss plans for the duplication of the Midland Highway from Geelong to Bannockburn.

VicRoads’ preference is to duplicate the existing road through the centre of Batesford.

The road is narrow and noisy, given the use of air brakes by big trucks to manage the steep descent. Heavy acceleration is then required to get up the other side.

The area is also home to sensitive parkland.

Having heard the concerns of Batesford residents, I took the matter to the Victorian parliament.

I have asked Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan to advise VicRoads to consider other options for the road duplication, including option five, a northern bypass of Batesford.

In essence, locals want the duplication away from the centre of their town.

Choir’s pint of difference

By Justin Flynn Punters will be able to grab a pint, leave their worries at the door and let The Choir of Man show take them on a pub journey like no other later this month.

The Choir of Man, coming to Geelong direct from the Adelaide Fringe Festival, is the latest production from Andrew Kay and Nic Doodson and the runaway hit of the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival It’s a high energy production set inside a British pub with a working bar and nine performers combining high energy dance, live percussion and foot stomping choreography with the extraordinary voices of nine singer musicians who perform everything from singalong classics to classic rock.

Production member Ben Norris, a two-time UK national poetry slam champion, said the cast was looking forward to getting to Geelong.

“We had the mayor of Adelaide at one of our shows and he said it was great, but will go down especially well and be an even bigger hit in the smaller cities and towns,” he told the Indy.

“I’m super excited to get to Geelong and see what you all think of the show.”

The Choir of Man features an everyman choir which performs a diverse repertoire including rock anthems, folk, choral and opera; all in a format that also combines song with slam poetry and an occasional break out of tap.

And yes, they serve real beer from the bar up on stage.

“We’re actually drinking non-alcoholic beer while we’re on stage, but the audience is definitely drinking real beer,” Norris says.

“We’ll all usually feel like a real pint after the show, though.”

PUB LAUGHS: The boys from The Choir of Man are on their way to GPAC. 178461 Audience participation, as you can imagine with a couple of brews under the belt, is encouraged.

“I’m not sure I was aware of just how much fun people can have during the show,” Norris says.

“We all bring something really different to the table. To perform alongside a tap dancer, opera singer and well-trained musical-theatre

boys, it’s just so different.”

Although Norris, from Nottingham, has an aunt who lives in Tasmania and he has been to Australia once, when he was 10, he says he not familiar with Geelong, but is looking forward to seeing our city.

“I must admit my Australian geography aside from the state capitals, is pretty poor so I’m looking forward to seeing more of the

country,” he says.

“The show looks like fun because it is fun.

You’d be hard pushed to find a group of blokes who don’t enjoy a pint and good dance and singalong at a pub - the whole thing is so infectious.”

The Choir of Man, rated PG, is choreographed by Freddie Huddlestone and will perform at GPAC on 22 March.

A positive approach to education is central to the philosophy of Torquay’s newest primary school, Lisieux Catholic Primary School. The school’s approach works to combine best practice teaching with an explicit focus on well-being.

Principal Dr Susan Ryan explained that while many schools have traditionally aimed for academic excellence as evidence of their success, a more holistic approach may be better suited to foster the flourishing of the whole person and equip them with skills for life “Unfortunately, in education today we have seen increasing evidence of psychological distress and mental illness in our children and adolescents and we know that young people have concerns about coping with stress, school, study and body image, even from a young age,” Dr Ryan said. “The great news is that research clearly shows that if we focus on well-being we will also see a direct impact on academic success. It’s a win-win formula.”

Dr Ryan explained that Lisieux is working in partnership with acclaimed psychology researcher Professor Lea Waters and her program Visible Well-being.

“This approach helps students and staff systematically build their own and other’s well-being and is built on the premise that when we feel good, we function well,” she said. “Our program is unique because as well as our ongoing relationship with the Visible Well-being program, we are seeking to provide students with lots of opportunities to connect with their local environment, which significantly impacts child development in every sense. It supports intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual growth; it supports creativity, improves self-discipline and reduces stress.”

Style meets new Sonata

By Ewan Kennedy Hyundai Sonata is due to be replaced by an allnew model in the first quarter of 2019, but the current one has received significant changes to see it through the intervening period. The importer has trimmed the range to just two models by discontinuing the Elite. Sonata is now offered in only in Active and Premium format.

A major facelift has given the Sonata a striking appearance. Its front end has a huge grille, sleek headlights and large daytime running light housings. The tail has received a sort of sporty treatment, with slimmer lights and a bold shape to the diffuser.

Though Sonata's sides remain virtually unchanged the trim around the window line has been modified to change the appearance somewhat.

Inside, changes are minimal with switches and buttons having a gloss piano black finish.

New-design steering wheels are fitted, with a sporty flat-bottomed unit in the Sonata Premium, the latter being the subject of our week’s test.

Satellite navigation with SUNA traffic updates is now standard in both Sonata models.

There’s a new in-dash 8.0-inch touchscreen, as well as and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, an upgraded AM/FM radio is used.

Aux and USB audio inputs are fitted.

The 2018 Sonata carries-over the engines from the superseded model. Sonata Active is powered by a 2.4-litre, naturally-aspirated engine which develops 138 kW, and 241 Nm of torque at 4000 revs. It drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic.

Sonata Premium gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that develops 180 kW, and 353 Nm. Maximum torque runs all the way from 1350 to 4000 rpm.

The turbo engine in the Sonata Premium sits beside a new eight-speed multi-mode automatic transmission. Driving modes are Comfort, Eco, Sport and Smart. The Smart setting automatically switches between the other three modes as the computer senses changes to the driver’s demands as well as road conditions.

The front seats are comfortable and provide the sort of support we like without being overly aggressive. The rear seat has good legroom and can take three adults if they don't mind a bit of shoulder rubbing.

Boot space is good at 510 litres and is reasonably easy to load. The back seats have a 60:40 split.

Hyundai Sonata offers all of the benefits of a four-door sedan in the way of ride comfort and a large boot. It’s up against some tough completion with the new Toyota Camry and others, so the local importer must be hanging out for the all-new 2019 Sonata.

Waterfront’s fishing fires ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers only had to venture down to Geelong’s waterfront to get stuck into some piscatorial action last week.

Pinkie snapper to 45cm started to school up in large numbers around any structure in deeper water. Casting out soft plastics was ideal, with Gulp 3” minnows very effective.

The odd large flathead was also taken as a welcome bycatch around the waterfront.

Whiting continued to be patchy along the whole Bellarine Peninsula but St Leonards still produced some quality fish over 40cm.

Squid were in numbers around St Leonards Pier. Anglers casting size three artificial jigs during the evenings had the best results.

Indented Head’s boat ramp was another great location to have a cast for a squid, again during the evenings.

Anglers who fished inside Swan Bay on the run-in tides had a ball boating numerous pinkies and flathead. Most tactics produced fish and once a school was located the action was fast-paced.

Fishing Swan Bay into the night produced gummy sharks to 8kg on fresh squid strips or salmon fillets.

Kingfish stole the show off Queenscliff, mostly in The Rip. Dropping squid baits down proved effective, along with working 150g to 200g knife jigs.

In the same area Australian salmon continued erupting on the surface in feeding frenzies, snapping up most lures that crossed their path.

Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, anglers boated southern bluefin tuna with a variety of tactics.

Trolling 4.5” white occy skirts around schools of fish worked extremely well, as did casting smaller-profile stick baits and soft plastics in white colours.

Bait fishing offshore produced reasonable numbers of pinkies to 50cm around reef sections in 10m to 15m of water. The odd gummy shark was taken around the same areas.

On the freshwater scene, Lake Bullen Merri continued dominating reports.

Chinook salmon remained on the bite for anglers fishing lightly weighted pilchard fillets, with the rainbow trout set to fire up as autumn advances.

Stony Creek was a great place to stretch the legs and go for a walk casting a Tassie Devil or spoon-type lure. Brown trout to just on 1kg were grassed but the monster redfin were harder to tempt.

The Lake of 1000 Casts, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, hosted increased captures of redfin. Soft plastics pitched on lengthy casts did the job.

Redfin remained a solid option in the Barwon River between Breakwater and Queen’s Park. Small hard-body lures were ideal for the task.

Next week could provide opportunities to fish locally for tuna, although Swan Bay should be exceptional for mixed bags of fish. Otherwise, keep an eye on the Barwon River estuary for elephant fish.

Bowlers eye finals Local Cricket, by Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club finds itself with one foot in the door of a long awaited finals appearance after posting a gutsy 8/312 against Dandenong last Saturday.

Winning the toss and batting, the Cats lost Tom Treble (4) early, but Mitch Reid (63) and Eamonn Vines (49) steadied the ship.

However, a flurry of middle order wickets saw the side slump to 5/161, and in desperate need of a substantial lower order contribution.

Enter Luke Inglis (53) and Brenton McDonald (85), who both batted resolutely to ensure the side had a competitive total.

So the batsmen have done their job, it is now up to the bowling unit to do theirs and propel the club into its first finals series in many years.

Geelong Cricket Association has one day of

its home-and-away season remaining, and in division one, with the top four already known, it's simply a matter of jostling for position now.

East Belmont look to have the toughest task to maintain its position as it attempts to chase down South Barwon's impressive 304.

Joel Davies (100) set up the Swans' huge total with a sublime knock, while Dave Lineen (4/55) toiled manfully for the Lions.

The home side's run chase will be made even harder knowing that star batsmen Sean O'Neill and Matt Lineker are both not playing.

But with a spot in the semi-final side up for grabs, expect some hungry batsmen lining up to prove they belong in the team.

In division two, Torquay looks to have sewn up fourth place on the ladder after making what looks like an unreachable 9/277 against Manifold Heights last week.

Joel Kitchen (103*) finally converted a good start to post his highest score of the season at just the right time. If the Tigers' bowlers can live up to their end of the bargain they will have earned their spot in the finals.

Highton though will be clinging to the hope that the Tigers falter and that it can chase down Bell Post Hills 221. Both of these outcomes seem unlikely, though.

And in division three, the main highlight in a round of dead rubbers was Geelong Wests Sam Loftus' incredible 222 from 223 balls against Waurn Ponds Deakin.

The veteran star showed he is still capable of plundering attacks, and while Thomson, and to a lesser extent Modewarre, have been taking all the headlines of late, the Rams have been quietly going under the radar and may just be priming themselves for a huge finals campaign at just the right time.

After and an impressive three road trips on the trot North Geelong Warriors will look forward to a first home round this Saturday against equally impressive Altona Magic.

Altona has continued to elevate its form from last season with a couple of big wins early against Werribee and Sunshine followed by a scoreless draw against Melbourne Victory last weekend.

Altona boats a highly experienced squad with Marco Pistinizi and Melvin Becket for midfield creativity as well as the additional support of James McGarry looming large.

Under the guide of coach Goran Lozanovski the Altona line-up will undoubtedly be a strong challenge for the Warriors.

North Geelong will look to continue its good form after another win away to Brunswick in hot and blustery conditions last weekend.

The match had an element of physicality where the bigger bodies of Brunswick tried to unsettle the quick movement of the Warriors when out of possession.
