Residents took a trip down memory lane during the 150th birthday celebrations in Cranbourne last weekend. There were lots of memories shared as former shire members, current City of Casey councillors, community groups and residents gathered at Greg Clydesdale Square on Saturday, 24 February. The event, which celebrated the 150th anniversary since the Shire of Cranbourne was proclaimed in 1868, included a historical photo display, performances, free activities, and a sausage sizzle. One of the attendees was Cranbourne resident, Peter Giles, who was a former councillor of nine years and the last Cranbourne Shire president before the amalgamation with Cardinia in 1994. "To serve at the time was a real privilege," Mr Giles recalled. "There was no political argy bargy. There was no politics involved in those days at all. We were a very, very well run council." Mr Giles said the amalgamation with the City of Berwick was a "pretty bitter pill to swallow" as Cranbourne was debt free and "kicking goals." City of Casey Mayfield Ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon said the anniversary celebrations were fantastic. "It was just such a really warm and local event. That's what loved about it most is that it was all about Cranbourne," she said. "We had a fabulous marquee tent set up and historic photos of Cranbourne - that's now going to be set up at the Balla Balla Community Centre to carry the legacy on." "We had some old shire presidents and shire secretaries and engineers. We had some great local talent too." But the event left some residents a little upset that more wasn't done to celebrate the milestone. Cranbourne resident of 60 years, Peter Kelly said there was only one marquee tent "that had anything to do" with Cranbourne's history. "Yes there was some music, some talk from some local councillors and a sausage sizzle, but that was basically it," he said, "It is such a shame that they (community members) weren't given the recognition they deserved on such an important occasion."

Shopping strip ambush By Cam Lucadou-Wells Workers and proprietors at a Hampton Park shopping centre fear for their safety after being nearly struck by "stray bullets" during an ambush shooting at a tattoo parlour. Star News believes that businesses have made an approach to force out the Nitro Ink studio - which has been linked to the Commancheros outlaw motorcycle gang - in the wake of the 22 February attack. In what police described as a targeted shooting, two armed men wearing balaclavas entered the studio on Fordholm Road and opened fire about 1.20pm. A 35-year-old man, believed to be a customer, was shot multiple times in front of five other staff and customers. As of early this week, he was in a serious, stable condition at The Alfred hospital, and the gunmen remained at large. Victoria Police's anti-outlaw bikie gang Echo taskforce is investigating. During the ambush, bullets blasted through the back wall of the tattoo studio into a neighbouring real estate agent and a law firm. At Blue Sapphire real estate, a bullet allegedly pierced a desk chair at head height as well as a filing cabinet. The manager was said to have left the chair just five minutes beforehand. Another bullet was described as travelling through the office of Hammersmith Lawyers, narrowly missing staff and ricocheting off the front entrance window. "Lucky is not the word," said a shopping centre worker - who did not wish to be identified. "We were blessed that nobody was hurt." The busy precinct includes a medical centre and two early learning centres - one hosted children as the stray bullets landed directly next door.

The incident follows an attempted 2013 bombing of Nitro Gym in Hallam, which is next door to a child play-centre. Traumatised staff at a neighbouring business in Hampton Park are said to have not returned to work since the latest shooting. A proprietor described a push by several businesses for Nitro Ink's landlord to evict the tattoo studio. Several other business owners described feeling unsafe and were supportive of the studio's departure. "You don't want to ignore signs of danger. This raises a real concern now," said another proprietor. "I was trusting the authorities allowed them to be here and watching them. But that's not

always the case." Nitro Ink has been indefinitely closed since the shooting. On its Facebook page, it posted: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the shop will be closed until further notice. "Please give us your patience as we will make it priority to get back to everybody. "Thank you for everyone's kind words and support." A spokesman for Cameron Real Estate, which oversees the tenancy, was asked about Nitro Ink's future at the centre. "There is nothing in writing from the tenants," he said. Casey Council statutory planning manager Duncan Turner said Nitro Ink was within

a commercial zone. Thus it didn't require a planning permit from the council, he said. A Victoria Police spokeswoman assured the public that police were "doing everything possible" to make the shooters accountable. She said local police were conducting patrols and "reassurance activities". "Victoria Police is not intimidated by OMCGs and we will not allow our communities to be. "We will continue its strong focus on any criminal activities associated with rival Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs. " Police understood the significant community concern in the wake of the shooting, she said. "Whilst we believe those involved are targeting each other, the indiscriminate nature of the attack clearly has the potential to endanger innocent members of the public." Cranbourneâ€™s good old times By Brendan Rees Graeme Facey remembers the time when milk used to be delivered on a horse and cart in Cranbourne. "It was a little country town and people still rode their horses up the main street," he recalled. The 79 year-old Cranbourne North was one of many residents who attended last Saturday's celebrations for Cranbourne's 150th milestone. He says his family came to Cranbourne back in the early 1860s and now has seven generations of family from the area. "My dad had moved to Melbourne so I was born in Essendon." Mr Facey says he enjoyed travelling to Cranbourne for holidays as a child. "I spent a lot of time here. Coming here and you could ride the horse - that was something I loved doing." He says he moved to Cranbourne in 1950, adding "it was very quiet little place really." "In the 1950 they were still delivering the

bread in a horse drawn bakers' cart." "Coming to live here, I caught the train every day to go to Oakleigh tech and that was the nearest tech school." He said watching the small town turn into a busy, booming suburb was staggering. "If you look at it all the development of Cranbourne into a huge sprawling suburb it is probably the most notable thing." There was still plenty of farm land between Cranbourne and Oakleigh, he says. "Years ago we would it very difficult to recognise almost any road other than just the geographical shape of it." Mr Facey remembers the old Melbourne Hunt club which was located on Narre Warren Road. "You could ride across all over the district across all the different properties." But these days, he cannot believe how everything has altered so much. He says the amount of traffic and housing is "remarkably different."

A few weeks back many were inspired by events at Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham. Well known sporting identity Eddie Lewis had his 45-year-old beard shaved by the equally-iconic Graham Treloar to raise money for breast cancer research as part of the Pakenham Cricket Club’s highly successful Pink Ribbon Lunch. A hard act to follow - but Cardinia Relay For Life organisers and participants did just that last Friday and Saturday. There were inspirational acts at every turn as people - young and old and from all walks of life - circled the oval for 18 hours to raise money for cancer research. Young Chairo student Danyal Diallo stepped up the pace and ran more than 100 laps over the journey, despite having a pronounced limp for the past 12 years from a hip displacement problem. He was there to help out a schoolmate whose father has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. I walked the last lap with John Carney - who has beaten prostate cancer and also had a more recent run-in with skin cancer. John was a bit sore and expecting a dressing down from his chiropractor, who recommended he give the event a miss. Those there in the wee hours would have noticed a few of the more senior members of the colourful Cancer Beating Fairies crew - Jack, Sue and John taking on the graveyard shift. Inspirational stuff all round. What a great event it is, Relay for Life - a lot of great people doing great things for others.

Highway works underway By Brendan Rees Works on the Western Port Highway and Robinsons Road intersection in Langwarrin South are underway. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan announced on Tuesday, 27 February that works had started on the $6.2 million upgrade to build a new two-lane roundabout. The upgrade, which is due to be completed mid-2018, would boost safety for drivers and

improve traffic flow, he said. Mr Donnellan said the new roundabout was welcomed news to the Langwarrin South community, which had campaigned for a safety upgrade at the intersection. He said in the five-year period to June 2015, there had been 17 crashes at the intersection, including seven serious injuries and two fatalities. "We've listened to what locals have had to say about safety at this intersection, now we're getting with this important upgrade,"

The Liberals have committed to deliver free flu vaccinations to children aged six-months to five-years on the back of a horror flu season in the Cardinia Shire. Locally, 104 children under five-years-old were diagnosed with the flu last year - a huge increase on the 15 cases reported the year before. Daniel Andrews’ Health Minister, Jill Hennessy, shunned the policy at the time, claiming the commitment was ‘half-baked and underfunded’ (Pakenham Gazette, 14 February) Just a few days later the Minister must have changed her mind, as the Andrews Labor Government announced it would deliver the Liberal’s commitment on free flu vaccinations. This is the right outcome for Victorian children. I hope that this will be an ongoing for the years to come and not merely a one-off, election year pledge. It is a shame that Daniel Andrews’ first instinct is to play politics and duck-shove responsibility to others rather than working in the best interest of Victorians. State award for helpers By Brendan Rees Four nights a week the Cranbourne Food Truck is out feeding the needy - whether it's rain, hail or shine. For their dedication in helping the community, volunteers from the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church who run the Food Truck were presented with the Premier's Volunteer Champions Teamwork Award during a ceremony at Government House on Sunday, 11 February. The annual awards celebrate volunteers from across the state. Secretary of the Cranbourne Food truck Chris Marsh said it was honour to receive the award on behalf of the volunteers. "When you get recognition like this then you know you're on the right track, you know you're doing the right thing," she said. "It's a formal pat on the back," she added. She said the truck only survived from the good will of the community. "If we didn't have the volunteers this truck wouldn't exist." The Food truck provides between 20-25 meals a night for the poor, disadvantage and homeless. "Even on days when it's bucketing down rain we go out, we go out on public holidays. Poverty doesn't take a holiday," Ms Marsh said. "It's not just the volunteers who work on the truck; it's people who donate food". Treasurer Karen Anderson said it was "pretty amazing for our little church to be recognised at Government House." "From where it started to where it is today

Riders make tracks to BMX A new state-of-the-art BMX track has arrived at Casey Fields. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett was joined by Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera on Sunday 25 February 2018 to officially open the $3.48 million project which also includes a new Sports Cycling Pavilion. The BMX track has a five-metre start hill with electronic start gate, four straights of exciting terrain and timing system. It also has floodlights which is a first in Casey, and meets state competition guidelines. It will be used by the Casey Wolves BMX Club, South East Bicycle Association, and Casey Cardinia Human Powered Vehicle and Cycling Club. The clubs have more than 500 registered members. Council contributed $2.11 million into the project while the State Government put in $1.21 million.

Pet rescuers converge Celebrity Gyton Grantley, host of Channel TEN's Pooches at Play is encouraging everyone to adopt at pet on National Pet Adoption Day.

Pet rescue groups will pay a visit to PETstock Cranbourne to help homeless pets find a home with a family that will love them forever. PetRescue Co-Founder, Vickie Davy said people would have the opportunity to adopt a pet that’s the perfect fit for them on National Pet Adoption Day which will be held at PETStock Cranbourne on Sunday 4 February 2018 from 10am - 2pm. “Pets of all types, sizes, breeds and ages will be available for adoption so everyone is sure to find their perfect match,” she said. “The rescue group can give you an overview of the animal’s behaviour and personality so you know exactly what you’re going to get”

Gyton Grantley, host of Channel TEN’s Pooches at Play, has thrown his weight behind the national campaign that encourages Australians to adopt rather than shop for pets. Mr Grantley, who grew up with pets and now looks after an adorable chocolate Labrador George, says that close to 40 per cent of homes have pets and hopes to encourage as many owners as possible to consider adopting their next animal, instead of purchasing. “Increasing numbers of Australians are realising there are tens of thousands of homeless pets out there waiting for someone to love them, and they’re choosing to adopt.“ Every year, approximately 200,000 healthy

pets find themselves homeless in Australia’s pounds and shelters - a statistic PETstock and PetRescue are determined to change. An Endeavour Hills student will trace the steps of Australia’s World War II service men and women. Gleneagles Secondary College’s Resi Santosa will join the Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize threeday tour to Canberra in July. Two teachers will take the students to sites of national significance including Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the National Archives of Australia and the Australian War Memorial. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said it was a wonderful opportunity for Resi to “learn about the service and sacrifice of our veterans”. “Our community is extremely proud that Resi has been selected to represent us on this study tour and I am sure he will return with a better understanding of our wartime history to share with his classmates and our community,” he said. The Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize is in its 15th year and provides a unique chance for Year 10 and 11 students to reflect upon the spirit of the Australians who fought for their country and the impact of war on society. Show is taste of regions By Brendan Rees From livestock, to cooking, crafts and vintage farming machinery - there was something for everyone during the two days of jam-packed fun at the 169th Annual Berwick Agricultural Show. Thousands of people poured into the Akoonah Park showgrounds to see dozens of exhibits last weekend. The event also featured competitions, demonstrations entertainment and food. For those wanting a taste of what life was like on the farm more than a century ago, there was a grand display of old water pumps, generators, and gasoline engines. Port Phillip’s Historical Machinery Society member Nick Fuller says it was important for children to learn about the region’s historic machinery. “These are made over a hundred years ago before they had power on the farms,” he said. “It is important to understand what people did years ago. Some kids don’t even know where milk comes from.” “Some of them (children) have never been to a farm; they don’t know what happens on a farm.” Drawing a large crowd nearby was the sheep show with the judging of short wool and long wool stud sheep. Berwick Show Society life member Mike Vallence, who has been involved in the sheep show since 1977, says it was vital that schools continued to be a part of the exhibition. “It’s great to see how many kids are here,” he said. “Without the schools running these agricultural sections then there’s nobody to take over and keep breeding sheep; that interest disappears.” The sheep show’s organiser’s Kane Hildred and his partner Bridget Lehy said there was about 160 sheep in the shed on Saturday and was passionate about giving the students from a variety schools a go. “It’s good to see them out here - these sheep are their pride and joy,” said Mr Hildred. At the cattle display, Loch farmer Noelene King proudly displayed her first prize winning Charolais beef cattle named ‘Huon Charnelle’ which took out a whopping four awards including Best Beef Inter-Bred Beef. “It’s pretty emotional. There’s a lot of effort that goes into it,” said Ms King. “They’re white so it’s cleaning them, clipping them; it’s a big thing.” She said the judges loved her cattle’s femininity: “They just said she was just so well put together.” Sixteen year-old James Barton of Mt Martha was thrilled to collect two beef cattle awards including Best Junior Handler and the Marty Alberni Herdsperson award. “It was good, especially after last night going back-to-back, that felt very good,” said James, who displayed his 23 month-old Charolais named ‘Hazledowns Miss Panache’. Not very often does a little one win it,” said Ms Garraway who won a $200 Horseland voucher and a rug. Ms Garraway also won the Supreme Pinto award. “It’s more special because I bred her as well. There’s a great bond with us.” Horse show judge Mitch Carrigan explained all Clydesdale and the stock horses “have to a temperament to do their job, so they’ve got to be calm, sensible.”

Alpacas were also a major attraction with families. Victorian Alpaca Youth Group member Bill Burnett said the event gave the opportunity for young people to build their confidence. “We’ve had some kids who had issues socially and when we’ve put them in with the alpacas and the confidence they’ve gain has just been amazing,” he said. “(It’s) helping them build a bond between them and the animal” He said the future of the Alpaca industry depended on today’s youth. “It’s training them up while some go onto

Father’s gift of son’s life By Brendan Rees Just a few weeks ago, Mark was fighting for his life at The Alfred hospital - desperate for platelet donations. The 56 year-old Cranbourne man had been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia - a blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow last New Year’s Eve. Mark’s daughter, Rachael Hallett says the Alfred Hospital ran out of platelets that her dad needed to survive in January. “His body wasn’t generating any platelets. His platelets were under 20 which means your body can spontaneously bleed and that’s what was happening,” says Ms Hallet. But after Mark’s friends, Paul and Laureen contacted 3AW, appealing to Melbourne men on-air to donate platelets, the blood bank was inundated with donations. “He revived several bags of HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) matched platelets; they saved his life,” Ms Hallet said. She says her dad woke up from his coma and was now doing well since he returned home on the 12 February. “There was a point in time where I didn’t think that I would have a dad for much longer so it was more than a relief.” Mark, who asked not to reveal his surname, underwent chemotherapy last month, which started well but ended with complications, Ms Hallet said. He was then put in an induced coma and placed on life support for 12 days. “I think it started with an infection somewhere and it snowballed from there,” Ms Hallet said. “There was quite a lot of different problems that all led to his airways being blocked and he couldn’t breathe very well,” she says. “We weren’t sure what was going to happen.” With a weak immune system, Mark’s platelet count continued to drop which made him more susceptible to bleeding.

The bleeding will fade away it’s just a matter of time to see if how much scarring they cause”. “He’s having what we hope is temporarily vision disruption at the moment”. Ms Hallet says her dad was one of the Alfred’s first bone marrow transplant survivors, more than 35 years ago. Since then, she said his health had been fine with no problems at all until around last Christmas when “he starting feeling a bit off”. “There’s still more hurdles. He’s still got a way to go but it’s definitely a lot more hopeful than it was at one point.” Ms Hallet says it’s most likely her dad will have to go through chemotherapy again. “Dad doesn’t currently need platelets but there are hundreds of people who do,” she says. “A lot of people don’t realise you can do more than donate whole blood“. Platelets and plasma donations are just as important, she said. “Leukaemia patients rely on these donations to survive”. Hero’s welcome for ex-PM Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott proved to be a crowd favourite during his surprise visit to Cranbourne last Saturday, 17 February, with many flocking to get a photo. Mr Abbot was in town to officially kick-start the campaign launch for Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans, ahead of the state-election this November. Ms Hermans said it was fantastic to have the former Prime Minister visit and speak to an enormous local audience. "Cranbourne has a lot of families who appreciate Tony Abbott's family values and respect his political tenacity and fair dinkum attitude," Ms Hermans said. Residents told Mr Abbott and Ms Hermans they were sick and tired with the crime wave that Premier Daniel Andrews had allowed to get out of control, as well as raising concerns about the rising cost of living. Kangan Drive a health hub St John of God’s new hospital in Kangan Drive opened to great acclaim on 18 January. The new hospital offers 202 beds, eight operating theatres and six birthing suites. With Casey public across the road and a host of other health providers in the area, Kangan Drive can now lay claim to being Berwick’s health hub. The new hospital boasts the region’s first Critical Care Unit providing a cardiac/high dependency service, along with the first catheter laboratory in the area. The unit is split into two areas of care - in-

tensive care and cardiac/high dependency care - and cares for patients who need to be monitored closely following major surgery or those who have become unexpectedly very ill. People who have experienced a cardiac event or who may require a higher level of care prior to transfer to a ward will also receive specialised care in this new unit. Along with the Critical Care Unit, St John of God Berwick Hospital has a dedicated rehabilitation unit within its new Kangan Drive facility. The unit offers services tailored to meet the

individual needs of each patient. Staff respond to the differing levels of physical function, depending on a patient’s health condition or their recovery needs from surgery. Focusing on orthopaedic and reconditioning rehabilitation services, these in-patient and out-patient programs aim to help people achieve maximum recovery and independence following surgery, accident or a major health condition or illness such as a stroke or cancer. The opening of these new units means the local community will be able to access these previously unavailable services throughout

Seagulls on the lookout By Nick Creely All Tooradin-Dalmore's Under 19 coach Daniel Conroy wants is young men who are willing to work hard and play for the jumper. The Seagulls, who have a long and proud history in the region, are battling for numbers ahead of the 2018 Under 19 season, with only half a squad locked in ahead of their opening round clash against Pakenham on 7 April. But Conroy; supported superbly by president Greg Kelly and his committee; are working stringently behind the scenes to not only fill a side, but bring in young men with great character. "The squad's currently at 12 confirmed, and it's not ideal with 16 sessions to go, but we'll keep battling through; we're working behind the scenes heavily and we'll do what we can and get boys to our club," he said. "They just have to get here, and they'll understand their not just a number; that's the biggest point I want to get across, Tooradin put in a lot of time with their juniors. "It might be a bit of dire straits at the moment, but I'm confident; we've got a great committee; I'm 100 per cent confident, behind the scenes we're working extremely hard." Kelly is also looking for help from neighbouring SEFNL clubs to help provide juniors, and was rapt with the support they're receiving to get a side up and running. "We've been speaking to other clubs in the area, and we've been on the phone to Shane Baker at Cranbourne and he'll do a bit of ruffling around for us, and see if there are any boys that are available to come down here," he said. "It's the same with Narre Warren; they're doing their best to find us some numbers. "It's not viable unless we've got three teams

"We're confident, and we'll make it; it'll definitely happen." Conroy hopes to create an environment that isn't about the wins and losses column necessarily, but about maturing young men and improving their chances of going on to senior football.

"Pushing forward, I want to implement the line coaches like seniors do, and just maturing them and trying to prepare kids for their footy future," he said. "Winning's great, but culture is the most important; I really want to develop these young guys coming through to play for the jumper; each club has those players that rock up and think they'll get a game, I want to bleed that out.

Their real Warrior spirit shines through By Russell Bennett The West Gippsland Country Week cricket side lived up to the Warrior nickname countless times over last week, creating their own piece of history in the process. Exceptionally led by inspirational skipper Dom Paynter and supported all the way by the likes of team manager Phil Anning, Matt Finch, Les Jones and Robert Dennis, the 13man playing group became the first in the history of the West Gippsland Cricket Association to win through to the VCCL Melbourne Country Week's top tier - Provincial. It's a feat that would have seemed impossible to many on the outside just over a year ago, with the Warriors then about to embark on yet another campaign in Division 3. But the seeds sowed in last year's successful campaign sprung to life this time around in a team that truly put the WGCA on the statewide map - as one of Victoria's top eight country leagues. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

No longer should the West Gippsland Cricket Association be considered as some smalltime minnow. Starting next season, they'll be going head-to-head with some of the most reputable country cricket leagues in the state - and they'll be confident they can push them all the way. The Warriors got off to a horror start on day one of their Division 2 journey last Monday - seemingly dominated on an inconsistent wicket by Bendigo. But they didn't bow their heads - instead digging their heels in and showing they were up for the fight. They went on a three-game winning streak against the South West in Ivanhoe, Sunraysia at Greenvale, and Shepparton at Essendon's spiritual home, Windy Hill, that took them to Friday's final and secured them a birth in Provincial next year. They even then had a very real chance of winning the second tier against the might of Ferntree Gully. If not for their opposition's superb batting depth, it could have been Paynter's main holding that trophy aloft

at the iconic Albert Ground. The week was littered with star turns by the Warriors - 118 runs at an average of 59 from Paynter to go along with seven wickets and some all-around brilliance in the field; 158 runs from Rob Elston including an unbeaten 80 in the final; and 115 runs and 14 wickets by Kooweerup star Mark Cooper. But everyone played their role - from top to bottom. Trio of local basketball clubs unite By Russell Bennett The Casey, Pakenham, and Sandringham basketball associations have partnered up to bring the local basketball community the 2018 South Eastern Junior Basketball Tournament. The competition will run across multiple venues, which may include Casey Stadium, Cardinia Life and Sandringham Basketball Stadium, and has already fielded entries from Casey, Pakenham, Sandringham, Dandenong, Westernport, Altona, and Phillip Island. There has also been significant interest from teams in Warragul, Sale, Wonthaggi, Shepparton, Southern Peninsula, Diamond Valley, Knox and Nunawading. The tournament is set to run over the Labour Day weekend - from 10-12 March - and will see some of the state's best young talent on display. It is expected that between 150 and 200 teams will be competing. It all came down to the clash between North Dandenong and Dandenong West at Lois Twohig Reserve. The Bulls surprisingly sent the Maroons in, and despite veteran Peter Atkinson (1/29) breaking through with the early scalp of dangerous opener Syed Mehmood (3), the home side had no trouble finding the middle of the bat. Despite the visitors looking to keep things tidy, strong cameos from skipper Nasrat Malikzada (37); who led from the front; and recruits Shehan Fernando (32) and Asfan Thajudeen (44), guided the Maroons to a commanding total of 8/177 off their 40 overs. Matt Collett (55) provided a lone hand as the Bulls tried in vain to stay in Turf 1, but were overpowered to be rolled for 108 inside the 35th over. Casey-South Melbourne put in a bitterly disappointing day two performance against Monash Tigers, going down outright at Casey Fields on Saturday. After conceding first innings points on day one, the Tigers resumed at 3/138, two runs ahead of the Swans' first innings total of 136. Dan Sartori (83) and Sam Taylor (68) wasted no time slamming on the runs, and eventually the Tigers declared on 8/248 in 49 overs, with Brendan Rose (3/53) and Jonah Serong (2/40) the multiple wicket takers. But the Swans couldn't show enough fight, rolled in just 30.5 overs for 99, in what was the club's second outright loss this year. Coach Prabath Nissanka didn't hide his frustrations at the performance, lamenting a lack of fight in his players. "It was a big disappointment to get out in one session," he said. "We needed to show more fight, but it's not easy when you're losing, but they have to keep their head high." With the Swans crawling to the end of the season, Nissanka said the group has positive discussions after the match about how they would move forward into the last game, and

their attitude heading into the off-season "I didn't say much after the game, I wanted them to talk," Nissanka said. "I asked them what they're thinking, and they admitted they didn't show enough fight with the bat. "They know what's wrong, and we just said we needed to keep our head high, move forward and finish the season well." The Swans will travel to play Camberwell Magpies in the final round of the home and away season, and Nissanka said he wasn't sure whether he would blood any youngsters, with the likes of James Long, Ashvin Adihetty and Niresh Drukeshkumar all with a sneaky chance of getting a first XI debut after showing some fantastic signs in the lower grades throughout the year. "It depends on the player, to bring in a youngster they have to do something," he said. "But there are a couple of players on the selectors' minds I think." Now it’s do or die for Cranbourne CRANBOURNE BOWLS This season has had more twists and turns than a Hitchcock thriller with Cranbourne having a shocker on Saturday, losing to bottom side Narre Warren by two shots. With one game to go for the season they now have to win the last clash against ladder-leaders Beaumaris to be guaranteed a finals birth. Fortunately, Side 2 had a good win against Mulgrave Country Club, Side 4 continued on undefeated for the season with a win against Willow Lodge, and the Ladies' team recorded another great win during the week, which lifted the spirits of club members after the game. In Division 2, Ron Lyfield and Lyndsay Coate were unable to play but tried hard from the sidelines to get the home team over the line with their encouragements. Unfortunately they could only watch another twist to the year unfold with Cranbourne losing by two shots on the final few ends. Skip Frank Byrne and his team put in another great performance, winning by 11 shots, and Skip Neil 'Buddy' Drummond and his team got up by 10 shots. The standout player of the day was Maree Taylor, who played her best game of the year. The team must now regroup and refocus and play Beaumaris as if this is the first week of finals. Cranbourne 72 lost to Narre Warren 74. This Ladies Division 1 side continues to be the benchmark of the competition with another great victory, this time at the expense of Blackburn by 16 shots and all rinks up. Skip Freda Farrall won by three shots, Joy McLisky won by six shots. and Sue Hudson won by seven shots.

In Division 3, Skip Graeme Wood put in a little extra training practice during the week that paid dividends, winning by eight shots, while Skip Sue Hudson and her team of Joe Byrne, Shane Morrison and Tony Collins won by 10 shots. With one more game to play at home next week this team is looking forward to playing finals the week after. Cranbourne 81 defeated Mulgrave Country Club 73.

In Division 5, the fairy tale came to an end this week with all rinks losing to Narre Warren and any faint chance of playing finals have gone out the door. Cranbourne 57 lost to Narre Warren 99. In Division 8, Skip Rob Sorensen and his rink of Brian Turton and Frank Coulter came back to win by six shots while skip Scott De Piazza and his team of Jess O'Day and John Forsyth were simply outstanding, winning by 17 shots. Cranbourne 50 defeated Willow Lodge 27.

A new synthetic green for Berwick Walker. In the past Berwick has hosted Bowls Victoria, junior and integrated competitions at the Manuka Road venue. The new green will strengthen the already fine facilities they have at the club for members and the wider local community. PENNANT RESULTS After looking particularly threatening during the day on Saturday, the weather held off - allowing matches to be played in reasonably good conditions with few exceptions. In some areas, no rain at all was recorded to interrupt play. HAMPTON PARK BOWLS MIDWEEK PENNANT It was another great week for the Hampton Park Bowls Club with three sides recording wins and one a near miss against top side, Beaumaris. It was a particularly tight game between Hampton Park and Cardinia Waters in Division 2, with only three shots deciding the result. Rhonda Diaper, Shane Collins, Andrew Brandolin, and skip Neville Hendrie went down by three shots (16-13) while Ray Wood, Toni Sutton, Helen Lambert and skip Denise Eastick missed out by one shot, 19-18. Geoff Ladner, Stuart Tokley, Ellen Smith and skip Christine Hendrie won by seven shots, 23-16, to give the Parkers an overall win as Hampton Park defeated Cardinia Waters 12-54 to 4-51. In six-a-side Division 1, another very good win kept the side in second place, and it will play finals. Brian Diaper, Ron Beverly and skip Rob Woff won by eight shots, 23-15, while Lou Soligo, Janice Collins and skip Marion Battaglia were up by 10 shots, 21-11. Hampton Park 14-44 defeated Berwick 0-26. SATURDAY PENNANT In a thrilling game against Division 2's top side Beaumaris, the Parkers won three rinks and went down by just four shots. Ian Kitt, Christine Hendrie, Gavin Wilson and skip Larry Simpson were outplayed on the day (1137). Val Moore, Helen Lambert, Chris Barnes and skip Steve Barnes got up on the last end to win by one shot, 18-17. Mat McLaverty, Neville Hendrie, Shane Collins and skip Mark Paton held the lead all day to win by five shots, 27-22. After winning an amazing 16 ends, Geoff Ladner, Sean McDonald, Andrew Brandolin and skip Warwick Hardy won by 16 shots - 30-14. Hampton Park 6-86 lost to Beaumaris 12-90 In Division 4, beating Pakenham on its home green was quite an achievement for the Hampton Park side. Lou Soligo, Dave Clarke, Stan Hatch and skip Ken Cobden went down by four (19-23), while Vince Kovacic, Brian Diaper, Ron Beverly and skip Rob Woff hung on for a draw (20-20). A strong finish by Richard Pallett, Janice Collins, Ellen Smith and skip Toni Sutton gave them a one-shot win, 18-17. Even though their lead was cut in half, Val Simpson, Bill Webb, Marion Battaglia and skip Denise Eastick still managed to win by nine shots, 30-21. On a sadder note, Mavis Kelly passed away on Friday evening at the age of 88. She was a much loved and respected member of the bowls club and will always be remembered for her outstanding work. BERWICK BOWLS Berwick Bowls Club, 'The Friendly Club', welcomed the City of Casey's Edrington Ward councillors Susan Serey and Tim Jackson last Saturday to begin finalising plans for the installation of a much-anticipated new synthetic bowling green at the club. The installation of the replacement green will take place after completion of works necessary to be undertaken to stabilise the embankment at the end of the existing green. The City of Casey is working with contractors to finalise details, however the club anticipates that all work will be completed sometime around May or June this year.
