Workers and proprietors at a Hampton Park shopping centre fear for their safety after being nearly struck by "stray bullets" during an ambush shooting at a tattoo parlour.

Star News believes that businesses have made an approach to force out the Nitro Ink studio - which has been linked to the Commancheros outlaw motorcycle gang - in the wake of the 22 February attack.

In what police described as a targeted shooting, two armed men wearing balaclavas entered the studio on Fordholm Road and opened fire about 1.20pm.

A 35-year-old man, believed to be a customer, was shot multiple times in front of five other staff and customers.

As of early this week, he was in a serious, stable condition at The Alfred hospital, and the gunmen remained at large.

Victoria Police's anti-outlaw bikie gang Echo taskforce is investigating.

During the ambush, bullets blasted through the back wall of the tattoo studio into a neighbouring real estate agent and a law firm.

At Blue Sapphire real estate, a bullet allegedly pierced a desk chair at head height as well as a filing cabinet. The manager was said to have left the chair just five minutes beforehand.

Another bullet was described as travelling through the office of Hammersmith Lawyers, narrowly missing staff and ricocheting off the front entrance window.

"Lucky is not the word," said a shopping centre worker - who did not wish to be identified.

"We were blessed that nobody was hurt."

The busy precinct includes a medical centre and two early learning centres - one hosted children as the stray bullets landed directly next door.

The incident follows an attempted 2013 bombing of Nitro Gym in Hallam, which is next door to a child play-centre.

Traumatised staff at a neighbouring business in Hampton Park are said to have not re-

turned to work since the latest shooting.

A proprietor described a push by several businesses for Nitro Ink's landlord to evict the tattoo studio.

Several other business owners described feeling unsafe and were supportive of the studio's departure.

"You don't want to ignore signs of danger.

This raises a real concern now," said another proprietor.

"I was trusting the authorities allowed them to be here and watching them. But that's not always the case."

Nitro Ink has been indefinitely closed since the shooting.

On its Facebook page, it posted: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the shop will be closed until further notice.

"Please give us your patience as we will make it priority to get back to everybody.

"Thank you for everyone's kind words and support."

A spokesman for Cameron Real Estate, which oversees the tenancy, was asked about Nitro Ink's future at the centre.

"There is nothing in writing from the tenants," he said.

Casey Council statutory planning manager Duncan Turner said Nitro Ink was within a commercial zone. Thus it didn't require a planning permit from the council, he said.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman assured the public that police were "doing everything possible" to make the shooters accountable.

She said local police were conducting patrols and "reassurance activities".

"Victoria Police is not intimidated by OMCGs and we will not allow our communities to be.

"We will continue its strong focus on any criminal activities associated with rival Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs. " Police understood the significant community concern in the wake of the shooting, she said.

City of Casey chief executive Mike Tyler's position will be formally advertised after he stepped down suddenly last week.

Mr Tyler had "mutually agreed" with Casey that "now is the right time to move on," according to a statement by the council on 21 February.

He left the job the next day.

In his place is acting chief executive Sheena Frost until a replacement is formally recruited.

Ms Frost is Casey's corporate services strategic director.

The council has stated it will advertise the vacancy in newspapers throughout Victoria as required in the Local Government Act. Two years ago, Mr Tyler's reign was extended for four years - until 2020.

The re-appointment was made by a previous term of councillors, who controversially chose not to advertise the $350,000-plus annual position.

Councillor Wayne Smith said the council would offer a public farewell function for Mr Tyler - as was befitting for his years of service.

"It's up to him whether he takes it up or not."

Speculation had swirled around Mr Tyler's tenure recently, intensified by his unexplained absence at a Casey general meeting on 20 February.

A closed meeting involving councillors and council officers followed that night.

Now there is speculation around his departure, given the lack of formal explanation about why he left.

Cr Smith stressed that Mr Tyler had not been "pushed" and that "there's nothing untoward".

"I don't want people to think that was not the case.

"There are always grievances between management and councillors but nothing out of the ordinary.

"It was a mutual parting. It was a good time

for him (to leave) and a good time for us."

Councillor Rosalie Crestani thanked Mr Tyler for his service and putting Casey in "good economic stead".

"He was a man of vast knowledge in the area.

"I'm thankful for his advice to me at times and wish him the best for the next chapter of his life."

Mr Tyler had served as the council's one and only chief executive for 23 years, overseeing a municipality that rapidly grew from 130,000 residents to more than 300,000.

He'd worked for Casey and City of Berwick for more than 36 years.

Now, Mr Tyler says it is time to move on and allow other leaders to shape the council's future direction.

"I am going out on a high," he said.

"I can look back with a lot of pride at what has been achieved and Council and I have come to a fair agreement."

A grandfather who was a live-in 'crop-sitter' at a cannabis grow-house in Hallam has been jailed for up to three years.

Van Vu, 50, was sentenced at the Victorian County Court on 15 February for cultivating a commercial quantity of a narcotic and stealing electricity.

Police had seized 111 plants weighing 15.89 kilograms during a raid of the Turanga Place house. The cultivation used 32,000 kilowatts of diverted electricity in two months.

Vu was described by Judge Trish Riddell as a "functional operative" rather than a principal player in the elaborate hydroponic-lighting setup.

But he was clearly trusted by others to produce the crop, and he expected a reward of several thousand dollars, Judge Riddell said.

The cultivation equipment and the electricity diversion were set up while Vu went on a trip to Vietnam in late 2016.

Five rooms in the house were using for growing the crop with the laundry, living room, bathroom and kitchen used for storing soil, pots, fertiliser and other equipment, Judge Riddell noted.

On his return, he tended the crops until his arrest during a police raid in January 2017.

The abode had been rented under his name for $2000 a month since September 2015.

Vu was not fuelled by addiction but the need for cash. He wanted to fund the relocation of his 14-year-old daughter from Vietnam to live with him.

Judge Riddell found no evidence that Vu was financially stressed at the time, but also nothing to suggest a "lavish lifestyle". It was also not clear how much it would cost to migrate his daughter.

Vu was a former refugee who fled from his post with the North Vietnamese army in 1987 and met his first wife in a Hong Kong refugee camp.

He had been previously jailed by the County Court for trafficking cannabis from a grow-house in 2010, Judge Riddell noted.

On that occasion Vu blamed his gambling problem. He no longer has an issue, he told the court.

Judge Riddell noted the need to not only deter Vu but the community from resorting to drug cultivation as an "easy fix" for financial problems.

"Although you were motivated to fund a better life for your daughter, you were doing so at the expense of other young people in the community by facilitating the cultivation of cannabis."

She said the number of plants were at the lower-end of a commercial quantity and the weight of the crop was below the threshold.

Vu's rehabilitation prospects were "guarded", she said.

He was jailed for up to three years with a 22-month non-parole period. His 391 days in pre-sentence detention was counted as time served.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE A few weeks back many were inspired by events at Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham.

Well known sporting identity Eddie Lewis had his 45-year-old beard shaved by the equally-iconic Graham Treloar to raise money for breast cancer research as part of the Pakenham Cricket Club’s highly successful Pink Ribbon Lunch.

A hard act to follow - but Cardinia Relay For Life organisers and participants did just that last Friday and Saturday.

There were inspirational acts at every turn as people - young and old and from all walks of life - circled the oval for 18 hours to raise money for cancer research.

Young Chairo student Danyal Diallo stepped up the pace and ran more than 100 laps over the journey, despite having a pronounced limp for the past 12 years from a hip displacement problem.

He was there to help out a schoolmate whose father has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

I walked the last lap with John Carney - who has beaten prostate cancer and also had a more recent run-in with skin cancer. John was a bit sore and expecting a dressing down from his chiropractor, who recommended he give the event a miss.

Those there in the wee hours would have noticed a few of the more senior members of the colourful Cancer Beating Fairies crew - Jack, Sue and John taking on the graveyard shift.

Inspirational stuff all round. What a great event it is, Relay for Life - a lot of great people doing great things for others.

‘Anne’s watch on crime

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Community safety and crime loom as key battleground issues for the state election.

One who will be watching keenly is Berwick mother 'Anne', a victim-of-crime featured by Star News in July.

She just hopes the political parties match their tough promises with action.

She and her 40-something daughter 'Beth' remain brutally impacted more than a decade after Beth was viciously stabbed and beaten unconscious by a man in her home.

It left Beth with a significant brain injury and permanently. It robbed her of "everything": her social life, her relationship with her kids, meaningful work, her ability to drive and her independence.

The perpetrator was jailed for a minimum of five years, but Anne says it ought to have been for life.

Anne lives in what looks to be a peaceful, tree-lined suburban street.

But recent home and car break-ins and the theft of a garden statue in the neighbourhood suggest otherwise.

It reinforces her feeling that crime is a growing problem, and has drawn her towards the Coalition's punitive law-and-order regime.

Its promises include tougher bail laws for violent, recidivist offenders and a 'one-strike and you're out' policy for accused offenders breaching bail.

It will also abolish concurrent sentences for violent repeat offenders and introduce mandatory jail for police car ramming.

In the past three years, the State Government has introduced tougher bail reforms, created offences for car jacking and home invasion, and restricted the use of community corrections orders.

A spokesman said the parole reforms had created the "toughest (system) in the country".

"We'll continue to make the changes necessary to keep Victoria safe."

"Changes to sentencing, parole and bail laws over the past few years made life tougher for serious offenders but also left fewer op-

Taking a jab at it The Liberals have committed to deliver free flu vaccinations to children aged six-months to five-years on the back of a horror flu season in the Cardinia Shire.

Locally, 104 children under five-years-old were diagnosed with the flu last year - a huge increase on the 15 cases reported the year before.

This is the right outcome for Victorian children. I hope that this will be an ongoing for the years to come and not merely a one-off, election year pledge.

It is a shame that Daniel Andrews’ first instinct is to play politics and duck-shove responsibility to others rather than working in the best interest of Victorians.

Ice driver’s freeway run

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been jailed after pleading guilty to an array of driving and drug offences across Victoria, including an erratic ice-fueled 148 km/h drive in a puddly emergency lane on the Western Freeway.

Tyson Timmins, 25, was told he was lucky he had not lost control of the 2006 Commodore when he hit the puddle at speed near Bacchus Marsh on 20 August, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court judge Jack Vandersteen said.

Police observed a huge plume of water sprayed by Timmins’ vehicle as it entered the puddle.

“You were driving in a manner that was incredibly dangerous,” Mr Vandersteen said.

Timmins kept driving until he stopped at a McDonald's in Sunshine West where police intercepted him.

They observed his blood-shot eyes, rapid speech, agitation and “slightly dirty” presentation. He tested positive to methamphetamine.

Earlier, a concerned driver had phoned triplezero about Timmins’ high-speed tailgating, lanesplitting and overtaking in the freeway’s emergency lane. At the time, Timmins’ probationary licence was disqualified. The car was towed away and impounded at the scene.

Last year, he was intercepted driving a Commodore with two bald rear tyres and cannabis in an interior compartment in Narre Warren South, the court heard.

He also pleaded guilty to the burglary of a Dandenong funeral parlour where he stole a roll of electrical cable as well as stealing tools from the back of a vehicle in Clayton in January.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing a power tool from a Box Hill real estate agent in broad daylight, fleeing from the agent’s receptionist.

Two Gumtree posts listing the tool for sale were reported by the victim to police.

He was on bail during the latter three incidents.

At the time, Timmins was in the grip of an ice habit, and under threat from lenders as he tried to pay back gambling debts, defence lawyer Cassie Heiser said.

Mr Vandersteen noted Timmins’ age, his lim-

ited criminal history and the impact of a recent family breakdown.

“You can see you’re clearly in a cycle of committing offences, most likely to service a drug addiction.”

Corrections Victoria assessed Timmins as suitable for a community corrections order, noting he was a high risk of re-offending.

His 12-month CCO includes supervision, judicial monitoring and treatment for drugs and mental health, as well as a ban on associating with three named men.

He was also sentenced to 27 days' jail, already served in pre-sentence remand.

His driving licence was disqualified for 15 months.

Sentence appeal as illegal driver runs out of chances

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has appealed a jail term for repeatedly driving while disqualified as well as breaching a family violence intervention order in bizarre circumstances.

The 39-year-old man pleaded guilty to five charges of unlicensed or disqualified driving and twice driving an unregistered car in Cranbourne, Glen Iris, Dandenong and Dandenong South last year.

He was also guilty of three counts of breaching the full intervention order that banned any contact with his ex-partner.

On 6 December, the man was arrested after attending Albion Hotel, Dandenong in the mistaken belief that his ex-partner was staying there.

He told a staff member he had seen the victim through the window as he walked past.

When told he wasn’t allowed to go to the upstairs rooms, he became agitated and yelled

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said the man could have made an application to vary the intervention order if he wanted to contact the victim.

The man replied: “I did apply but I can’t remember why I didn’t turn up.”

Ms Spencer said she needed to make it clear to the man and the community that repeated breaches - after previous court appearances were “unacceptable” and would lead to a jail term.

“You’ve been trying very hard in the last little while to get yourself on track and this (sentence) will set you back.

“If you are serious about your rehabilitation, you will be able to take up a community corrections order on your release.”

The man was jailed for four months followed by a 12-month treatment-based CCO. He was bailed to appear at the Victorian County Court appeal on 7 May.

His previous intervention orders were against his parents, who he now lives with in supportive circumstances, the court heard.

The man, who had been homeless during 2017, was dissociating from former peers, keen to stop drug-using and had started casual work.

He had since been removed from medication for drug-induced schizophrenia on the advice of his doctor.

“They (the parents) believe he’s starting to make changes in his life.”

Jail for carpenter

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former carpenter whose drug habit raged after his business collapsed has been jailed for a spree of disqualified driving.

Adam Grazotis, 29, was caught driving disqualified nine times and driving an unregistered car four times across Melbourne between June 2016 and November 2017, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard.

On the last occasion, in Paperbark Street, Doveton, Grazotis gave a false name to police to try to avoid having his friend’s car impounded, he claimed.

Prior to the court hearing on 26 February, Grazotis’s licence was already disqualified un-

til 2020 for refusing a drug-driving test.

Things “really began to fall off the rails” in Grazotis’s mid-twenties, lawyer Daniel Walsh told the court on 26 February.

At his career peak, Grazotis was hiring up to six sub-contractors.

Then at 24, he made a “business mistake” that left him owing significant penalty wages while a building project was delayed.

For 18 months, he virtually worked for nothing as he paid back the owed wages.

At 26, he lost his job after suffering a workplace injury falling off collapsed roof scaffolding, Mr Walsh said.

Grazotis’s use of meth and GHB escalated,

and led to offending, a jail term and a community corrections order in 2016.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said jail was necessary to deter Grazotis and other repeated disqualified-driving offenders.

“You were flouting the law ... and just driving regardless. That’s just not acceptable.”

Grazotis was jailed for six months with a CCO, but could expect longer jail stints if he reoffended in similar fashion, Ms Spencer said.

He was urged to start his rehabilitation and to accept assistance to find work during the corrections order.

Spirit of sacrifice An Endeavour Hills student will trace the steps of Australia’s World War II service men and women.

Gleneagles Secondary College’s Resi Santosa will join the Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize three-day tour to Canberra in July.

Two teachers will take the students to sites of national significance including Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the National Archives of Australia and the Australian War Memorial.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said it was a wonderful opportunity for Resi to “learn about the service and sacrifice of our veterans”.

Girl sexually assaulted on bus

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A male is wanted over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl on a bus at Hampton Park.

The male allegedly boarded the bus outside a Hampton Park shopping centre on Hallam Road just before 4pm on Saturday, 17 February.

Transit Safety Division detectives say he allegedly sat next to a 15-year-old girl, put his arm around her and sexually assaulted her.

The girl broke away from the male to sit closer to the driver, police say.

The male disembarked from the bus at a shopping centre on Overland Drive in Narre Warren about 4.20pm.

He is described as of Middle Eastern appearance, in his late teens or early 20s, 175 centimetres, medium build with slicked-back black hair and slight facial hair above his lip.

He was wearing a white Ecko-brand T-shirt with navy blue sleeves, beige pants and black shoes.

Police have released an image of a man who may be able to assist with their enquiries.

Mental health plan

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A new mental-health care model in Melbourne's South East is designed to reach those slipping through the cracks.

The services are described as more "person-centred' with improved care for people with mild, moderate or severe conditions.

According to South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network, the model will allow people to more easily step up or step down into different intensities of service.

There will be more accessible after-hours appointments and services will be more tailored to the individual.

"The new service models are truly innova-

tive and designed to reach people who have been missing out on the mental health support they need," SEMPHN chief executive Elizabeth Deveny said.

The services were launched after 18 months' consultation with consumers, carers, health professionals and service providers, she said.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the new services were in line with "best practice mental health guidelines".

"These services are flexible, with the consumer able to step up or step down to different intensity support as their needs change over time.

"It will now be easier than ever for local residents to access the right mental health service and have a single point of contact for support."

The services are targeted to people with Health Care Cards or who can't afford similar care, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, residents in aged care, people with perinatal depression and people who experienced family violence.

Galaxy of giving is author’s wish come true

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren South childrens author Wida Tausif has written a book on aliens, and is now looking to rule the galaxy - in a sense.

As a national finalist in Miss Galaxy Australia, Ms Tausif hosted a fundraiser morning tea that raised more than $700 for Make A Wish Foundation.

The foundation grants wishes and enriching experiences to seriously ill children.

Ms Tausif - an Afghan refugee who has overcome schoolyard bullying and become an advocate for human rights - said the event was a chance to give back to her community.

"Raising funds for charity organisations is the best part about pageants," Ms Tausif said.

"Organising a fundraising event was always on my childhood bucket list and Miss Galaxy made it happen."

The morning tea at Oakgrove Community Centre on 27 January included auctions, raf-

fles, henna tattoos and face painting as well as speeches by Casey councillors Rex Flannery and Susan Serey.

Ms Tausif released her latest book Aliens Don't Belong On Earth last year. It's a tale about an alien trying to lure humans away from Earth to a non-existent chocolate planet.

But ultimately the book reveals the value of friendship, respect and honesty.

The prolific author is working on a memoir of growing up as a refugee in New Zealand.

Ms Tausif has previously been crowned as Miss Intelligent at a recent Miss South Asian Australasia contest in Melbourne.

She fronts the national finals as Victoria's representative in Miss Galaxy Australia in March.

Ban won’t limit waste

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council says its recycling regime will be unaffected by a Chinese ban on the importing of certain waste materials.

Casey's waste and landfill manager Michael Jansen said the council's contractor SKM Recycling -which collects from home recyclebins - already produced recyclable product to China's new, higher standard.

SKM was developing additional processing facilities with the latest sorting technology, Mr Jansen said.

"The recent changes in China's recycling policies has not affected Council operations and we ask residents to continue recycling as normal.

"Collection services also remain the same" Casey's comments came before the State Government announced a $13 million assistance package for affected councils up to 30 June.

The Municipal Association of Victoria says after that date, all Victorians face extra rate rises of between 1.1 and 2.5 per cent to cover recycling costs.

"The priority for state and federal governments should now be on significant investment into our local recycling industry to help strengthen our system, and protect jobs and the environment," Mr Spence said.

Mr Spence urged households to continue recycling in the meantime.

"Follow your Council's instructions about what goes into your recycling bin.

"Also be mindful of your consumption choices, and buy products with recycled content to help close the recycling loop."

The government also announced a recycling industry taskforce to plan for the industry's "transition".

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey's unofficial 'Minister of the Arts' has been recognised for more than 40 years in the region's theatre scene.

Councillor Wayne Smith was recently inducted into the Lyrebird Awards' Hall of Fame - a prestigious award covering theatre in East and South-East Melbourne.

He was nominated by three Casey theatre groups - Cranbourne Community Theatre, BATS Theatre Company and Windmill Theatre Company.

Cr Smith first strode the boards when he auditioned for a high-school musical as a 12-year-old. Though he notes he was specifically directed to mime his singing parts.

He went on to be involved in committees, photograph shows and to be a regular member of audiences.

In recent years, he's worked as a Lyrebird Awards judge.

Susan Bergman, of Cranbourne Community Theatre, paid tribute at a Casey Council meeting on 27 February.

Cr Smith had earned the moniker of Casey's unofficial 'Minister of the Arts', she said.

"Without this person's tireless dedication over the last few decades ... the place of the arts within the City of Casey would not be as it is today.

"It is a source of absolute enjoyment to get the City of Casey's support over the past few years to do what we enjoy doing."

Ms Bergman said it was doubtful that facilities such as The Factory and the BATS storage and construction depot would have been built without Cr Smith's influence.

"These facilities helped to demonstrate how important the arts are and this has culminated in the jewel in the crown ... the $125 million Bunjil Place."

The healthy arts environment was attracting people to Casey, and helping it aspire to being Australia's most liveable city.

Cr Amanda Stapledon said Cr Smith had done much to introduce colleagues to the arts.

"Without him, the City wouldn't commit anything like it does."

Helen’s ‘last-minute’ win

By Brendan Rees Helen Raven made a last minute decision to throw some sheep in the back of her trailer to take to the Berwick Agriculture Show last weekend.

And she’s thankful she did because she took out the Supreme Champion Stud Exhibit award in the sheep show ring with her 20 month-year Hampshire Down Ram. “This is something really special,” she said.

“He’s not really in show condition; I just brought him down because I was coming down here to judge tomorrow (last Sunday).”

“I threw a few sheep in the trailer yesterday and brought him with me,” she said last Saturday, 24 February.

Ms Raven travelled from Henty, New South Wales, saying she was wrapped to win.

“It takes years to get sheep to get this result.

You might win here and there but to get something like this it takes years.”

“He’s a really wonderful ram. He’s also got a really beautiful temperament.”

“He needs a bit of condition on him because he’s going to Sydney next year.”

Ms Raven says she has about a hundred Hamphire Down ewes and about 50 Lincoln ewes on her farm.

She’s also passionate about educating the public about where their supermarket meat comes from.

“It’s nice to be able to pass on some of my knowledge to some of these school kids.”

“It (meat) doesn’t come out of supermarket shelf. I’m really passionate about that,” Ms Raven said.

“There’s such a divide between the city and the country.”

By Brendan Rees From livestock, to cooking, crafts and vintage farming machinery - there was something for everyone during the two days of jam-packed fun at the 169th Annual Berwick Agricultural Show.

Thousands of people poured into the Akoonah Park showgrounds to see dozens of exhibits last weekend.

The event also featured competitions, demonstrations entertainment and food.

For those wanting a taste of what life was like on the farm more than a century ago, there was a grand display of old water pumps, generators, and gasoline engines.

Port Phillip’s Historical Machinery Society member Nick Fuller says it was important for children to learn about the region’s historic machinery.

“These are made over a hundred years ago before they had power on the farms,” he said.

“It is important to understand what people did years ago. Some kids don’t even know where milk comes from.”

“Some of them (children) have never been to a farm; they don’t know what happens on a farm.”

Drawing a large crowd nearby was the sheep show with the judging of short wool and long wool stud sheep.

Berwick Show Society life member Mike Vallence, who has been involved in the sheep show since 1977, says it was vital that schools continued to be a part of the exhibition.

“It’s great to see how many kids are here,” he said.

“Without the schools running these agricultural sections then there’s nobody to take over and keep breeding sheep; that interest disappears.”

The sheep show’s organiser’s Kane Hildred and his partner Bridget Lehy said there was about 160 sheep in the shed on Saturday and was passionate about giving the students from a variety schools a go.

“It’s good to see them out here - these sheep are their pride and joy,” said Mr Hildred.

At the cattle display, Loch farmer Noelene King proudly displayed her first prize winning Charolais beef cattle named ‘Huon Charnelle’ which took out a whopping four awards including Best Beef Inter-Bred Beef.

“It’s pretty emotional. There’s a lot of effort that goes into it,” said Ms King.

“They’re white so it’s cleaning them, clipping them; it’s a big thing.”

She said the judges loved her cattle’s femininity: “They just said she was just so well put together.”

Sixteen year-old James Barton of Mt Martha was thrilled to collect two beef cattle awards including Best Junior Handler and the Marty Alberni Herdsperson award.

“It was good, especially after last night going back-to-back, that felt very good,” said James, who displayed his 23 month-old Charolais named ‘Hazledowns Miss Panache’.

Heath Hill took out the most prestigious prizethe Grand Supreme Led of the Show with her two year-old Shetland named ‘Moondara Park Whisper’.

“It was a privilege to win it. Not very often does a little one win it,” said Ms Garraway who won a $200 Horseland voucher and a rug.

Ms Garraway also won the Supreme Pinto award. “It’s more special because I bred her as well. There’s a great bond with us.”

Horse show judge Mitch Carrigan explained all Clydesdale and the stock horses “have to a temperament to do their job, so they’ve got to be calm, sensible.”

Alpacas were also a major attraction with families.

Victorian Alpaca Youth Group member Bill Burnett said the event gave the opportunity for young people to build their confidence.

“We’ve had some kids who had issues socially and when we’ve put them in with the alpacas and the confidence they’ve gain has just been amazing,” he said. “(It’s) helping them build a bond between them and the animal” He said the future of the Alpaca industry depended on today’s youth.

“It’s training them up while some go onto into being breeders themselves, others may do this for a short period of time.”

It wasn’t all about livestock with exhibitors from the art and photography section showcasing an impressive display of pastel, oil, drawing, water colour, landscape and portraiture artworks.

City of Casey Cr Rex Flannery said the event was important for people from non-farming backgrounds to gain a greater understanding of agriculture.

“I think it’s essential that we bring the local shows back to the community so we don’t lose the heritage of farming.”

Kangan Drive a health hub St John of God’s new hospital in Kangan Drive opened to great acclaim on 18 January.

The new hospital offers 202 beds, eight operating theatres and six birthing suites.

With Casey public across the road and a host of other health providers in the area, Kangan Drive can now lay claim to being Berwick’s health hub.

The new hospital boasts the region’s first Critical Care Unit providing a cardiac/high dependency service, along with the first catheter laboratory in the area.

The unit is split into two areas of care - in-

tensive care and cardiac/high dependency care - and cares for patients who need to be monitored closely following major surgery or those who have become unexpectedly very ill.

People who have experienced a cardiac event or who may require a higher level of care prior to transfer to a ward will also receive specialised care in this new unit.

Along with the Critical Care Unit, St John of God Berwick Hospital has a dedicated rehabilitation unit within its new Kangan Drive facility.

The unit offers services tailored to meet the

individual needs of each patient. Staff respond to the differing levels of physical function, depending on a patient’s health condition or their recovery needs from surgery.

Focusing on orthopaedic and reconditioning rehabilitation services, these in-patient and out-patient programs aim to help people achieve maximum recovery and independence following surgery, accident or a major health condition or illness such as a stroke or cancer.

The opening of these new units means the local community will be able to access these previously unavailable services throughout

Melbourne’s south-east corridor.

“We are excited to bring new services to the area that don’t currently exist in this capacity for Casey-Cardinia residents,” said Lisa Norman, CEO of St John of God Berwick Hospital.

“It’s an important community service that we feel will now adequately meet the needs of this region.”

Bulk billed nuclear medicine has been launched at Marina Radiology.

Housed in the flagship branch on Kangan Drive, this service has been designed around patient convenience and aligns with Marina's core values of improving community access to diagnostic imaging.

We broke a lot of traditional wedding rules.

We settled on a Sunday morning ceremony as it was cheaper and gave off a more relaxed vibe, and - gosh the horror - stayed together the night before.

The flowers I got off Etsy, the decorating I left to the venue and the photographer was someone I knew from work.

Don’t get me wrong, the wedding wasn’t without some hefty expenses.

The shoes, I did splurge on as I wanted to be comfortable, and I treated myself to some gorgeous blue earrings that made me feel a million bucks.

All in all, and despite expectations, planning turning out to be quite easy.

However, I did have one bridal crisis that was quickly adverted.

Three days before the big day, I decided my dress was just not right.

My ballgown styled Justin Alexander design, with its intrigue lace detailing while beautiful, just wasn’t me.

Fortunately, thanks to a quick trip to Fountain Gate I found something I was more comfortable in.

Who cares that it was ’off the rack’ and wasn’t ’bridal’?

When the day came, I was still a bride who married the man I loved.

The couple chose Oakridge wines, where they got engaged, for the special day.

It wasn’t any less special because we broke a few traditions or saved a bit of cash.

My advice to brides is simple - you do you.

Despite the pressures from family or friends, or the $50,000 weddings shoved down our throats in bridal magazines, there’s no wrong way to get married.

If you want the big white wedding, absolutely go for it, same for the destination wedding/holiday.

But don’t think there’s ever anything wrong with breaking a few traditions.

It’s what makes your day unique.

Growing up, I was never the girl who dreamt of the big white wedding.

In fact, I wasn’t even sure I wanted to get married.

But that all changed when I met my nowhusband Daryn.

Both going into the relationship with no plans to marry, I remember breaking down on his living room couch one afternoon upon realising that being his wife didn’t seem so bad after all.

But I guess what they say is true - when you know, you know.

Suddenly I wanted it all, and I wanted it all with him.

I could say I didn’t see it coming, but us girls, sometimes we just know.

But fate and family circumstances had other ideas, and just five months later on 19 November we tied the knot at the same location we got engaged.

Planning a wedding in such a short time was not going to be without its challenges, so thank goodness I was, as my friends put it, “the most chill bride ever“.

Never having had the Pinterest board of wedding ideas or an expectation of the “big day“, I had no preconceived ideas of what a wedding would be.

But I knew I wanted an intimate wedding we settled on a guest list of 30 - and I wanted

Shinners' pacy message

By Nick Creely Returning Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners has a message for their rivals ahead of the 2018 season; expect a fast, exciting and slick looking Magpies unit. The legendary Magpie is back at the club after leaving Kalora Park after a magnificent 2010 premiership, and admits the pressure is on his chargers to bridge the gap of 57 points that Berwick had on them in the 2017 grand final under Heath Black.

"There's a lot more expectation obviously because of where we finished last year," he said.

"When you get to a position last year where they fell short, there's definitely some pressure; Berwick were a great side, and realistically its 10 goals to make up which is a fair bit of work for us and the rest of the competition."

But as Shinners warns, the Magpies in the opening round clash against Cranbourne on 7 April will be new look, implementing a fast, youthful and more unpredictable brand of football which has been worked on with a prime focus on improving a key area.

"I was there most weeks watching (last year), and I was part of the general committee doing some stuff for the club, and the biggest thing I saw was that we weren't fit enough, and we didn't do a major pre-season," he said.

"In saying that, Heath (Black) did something right because all three teams made the grand final, so we're not far away, but it's just about bridging the gap; but the side Berwick put out in the seniors was very, very strong.

"You'll see a lot of youth in our side; there's an opportunity that wasn't there in the past, but I wasn't adverse to that last time I coached, we were young and quick; they'll get an opportunity and we'll have a good look at them.

"I'll implement what I want; there's not a lot of tinkering, but it's just about getting my message across, and how I want us to play; the

training drills, and our structures are a lot different from the last couple of years, but in saying that, the younger players don't know what was prior to this. "We'll be around the mark, and I'm looking forward to seeing our young blokes sink their teeth in; they'll make mistakes, but I'm not fussed about that."

Like every club in the competition, there's been plenty of player movement in the off-season, and the Magpies are no different.

The Magpies welcome in former VFL tall Trent Shinners, who played with Norwood in the Eastern league last season, as well as superstar midfielder Brad Scalzo back to the club from Warragul, while Liam Myatt is back to full fitness after a horrific knee injury. "We may have lost players, but we've recruited players back to our club that have played a high standard of footy; we're really fit, and our conditioning part has been good, it's just the game plans and the current trends that we're trying to pick up," Shinners said.

"We've lost some players; a lot of players between reserves and seniors have left, and they've decided to explore other avenues and play more senior footy, which is fair enough, but we've got 10 to 12 Under 19 players coming up, and there's room for those to come in. "Others have moved on, and the next generation are coming through; they've been on the button, a lot of the young boys haven't missed any training, so it's been good."

And Shinners said that the experienced group of Michael Collins, Ben King, Col McNamara and Dylan Quirk; who will captain the club again in 2018; will help balance out his talent youngsters, as they look to thrill the competition this season.

"Yeah we're pretty much set, I don't think we'll change much from now," he said.

"As a coach, grand finals are the pinnacle and I'm no different, but at the same time, when people watch us play, it'll be an exciting brand of footy, but we'll be young."

Their real Warrior spirit shines through

By Russell Bennett The West Gippsland Country Week cricket side lived up to the Warrior nickname countless times over last week, creating their own piece of history in the process.

Exceptionally led by inspirational skipper Dom Paynter and supported all the way by the likes of team manager Phil Anning, Matt Finch, Les Jones and Robert Dennis, the 13man playing group became the first in the history of the West Gippsland Cricket Association to win through to the VCCL Melbourne Country Week's top tier - Provincial.

It's a feat that would have seemed impossible to many on the outside just over a year ago, with the Warriors then about to embark on yet another campaign in Division 3.

But the seeds sowed in last year's successful campaign sprung to life this time around in a team that truly put the WGCA on the statewide map - as one of Victoria's top eight country leagues. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

No longer should the West Gippsland Cricket Association be considered as some smalltime minnow. Starting next season, they'll be going head-to-head with some of the most reputable country cricket leagues in the state - and they'll be confident they can push them all the way. The Warriors got off to a horror start on day one of their Division 2 journey last Monday - seemingly dominated on an inconsistent wicket by Bendigo.

But they didn't bow their heads - instead digging their heels in and showing they were up for the fight.

They went on a three-game winning streak against the South West in Ivanhoe, Sunraysia at Greenvale, and Shepparton at Essendon's spiritual home, Windy Hill, that took them to Friday's final and secured them a birth in Provincial next year. They even then had a very real chance of winning the second tier against the might of Ferntree Gully. If not for their opposition's superb batting depth, it could have been Paynter's main holding that trophy aloft

at the iconic Albert Ground.

The week was littered with star turns by the Warriors - 118 runs at an average of 59 from Paynter to go along with seven wickets and some all-around brilliance in the field; 158 runs from Rob Elston including an unbeaten 80 in the final; and 115 runs and 14 wickets by Kooweerup star Mark Cooper. But everyone played their role - from top to bottom.

Trio of local basketball clubs unite

By Russell Bennett The Casey, Pakenham, and Sandringham basketball associations have partnered up to bring the local basketball community the 2018 South Eastern Junior Basketball Tournament.

The competition will run across multiple venues, which may include Casey Stadium, Cardinia Life and Sandringham Basketball Stadium, and has already fielded entries from Casey, Pakenham, Sandringham, Dandenong, Westernport, Altona, and Phillip Island.

There has also been significant interest from teams in Warragul, Sale, Wonthaggi, Shepparton, Southern Peninsula, Diamond Valley, Knox and Nunawading.

The tournament is set to run over the Labour Day weekend - from 10-12 March - and will see some of the state's best young talent on display.

It is expected that between 150 and 200 teams will be competing.

The Maroons live to see another day

By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 & 2 REVIEW - ROUND 11 TURF 1 With the final four already set, there was just one thing to settle in the final home and away match of the Turf 1 season; who would be the final of the four teams to be relegated to Turf 2 in the association's restructure next year.

It all came down to the clash between North Dandenong and Dandenong West at Lois Twohig Reserve.

The Bulls surprisingly sent the Maroons in, and despite veteran Peter Atkinson (1/29) breaking through with the early scalp of dangerous opener Syed Mehmood (3), the home side had no trouble finding the middle of the bat.

Despite the visitors looking to keep things tidy, strong cameos from skipper Nasrat Malikzada (37); who led from the front; and recruits Shehan Fernando (32) and Asfan Thajudeen (44), guided the Maroons to a commanding total of 8/177 off their 40 overs.

Matt Collett (55) provided a lone hand as the Bulls tried in vain to stay in Turf 1, but were overpowered to be rolled for 108 inside the 35th over.

Veteran Shane Clark (2/23) was the pick of the bowlers for the Maroons.

In another shock result, Mordialloc lost the rights for a second chance after relinquishing top spot to Cranbourne at Ben Kavanagh.

Casey-South Melbourne put in a bitterly disappointing day two performance against Monash Tigers, going down outright at Casey Fields on Saturday.

After conceding first innings points on day one, the Tigers resumed at 3/138, two runs ahead of the Swans' first innings total of 136.

Dan Sartori (83) and Sam Taylor (68) wasted no time slamming on the runs, and eventually the Tigers declared on 8/248 in 49 overs, with Brendan Rose (3/53) and Jonah Serong (2/40) the multiple wicket takers.

But the Swans couldn't show enough fight, rolled in just 30.5 overs for 99, in what was the club's second outright loss this year.

Coach Prabath Nissanka didn't hide his frustrations at the performance, lamenting a lack of fight in his players.

"It was a big disappointment to get out in one session," he said.

"We needed to show more fight, but it's not easy when you're losing, but they have to keep their head high."

With the Swans crawling to the end of the season, Nissanka said the group has positive discussions after the match about how they would move forward into the last game, and

their attitude heading into the off-season "I didn't say much after the game, I wanted them to talk," Nissanka said.

"I asked them what they're thinking, and they admitted they didn't show enough fight with the bat.

"They know what's wrong, and we just said we needed to keep our head high, move forward and finish the season well."

The Swans will travel to play Camberwell Magpies in the final round of the home and away season, and Nissanka said he wasn't sure whether he would blood any youngsters, with the likes of James Long, Ashvin Adihetty and Niresh Drukeshkumar all with a sneaky chance of getting a first XI debut after showing some fantastic signs in the lower grades throughout the year.

"It depends on the player, to bring in a youngster they have to do something," he said.

"But there are a couple of players on the selectors' minds I think."

The club lost by just two runs in the seconds, with Ryan Eaton making 87 and Long scoring 67 as the Swans were bowled out for 262, and also lost comfortably in the thirds and fourths in what was a tough weekend all round. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

A brand new green Berwick Bowls Club, 'The Friendly Club', welcomed the City of Casey's Edrington Ward councillors Susan Serey and Tim Jackson last Saturday to begin finalising plans for the installation of a much-anticipated new synthetic bowling green at the club.

The installation of the replacement green will take place after completion of works necessary to be undertaken to stabilise the embankment at the end of the existing green. The City of Casey is working with contractors to finalise details, however the club anticipates that all work will be completed sometime around May or June this year.

Berwick Bowling Club is grateful of the support of the City of Casey and its representatives and also Berwick board and club members who were heavily involved in the preliminary

work and research required to reach this stage, namely Jeff Janetzki, Reg Rowswell, Rob Licqurish, Ken Graeber, Cliff Fothergill and Mark Walker.

In the past Berwick has hosted Bowls Victoria, junior and integrated competitions at the Manuka Road venue.

The new green will strengthen the already fine facilities they have at the club for members and the wider local community.

Narre keeps its finals hopes still alive

Parkers roll HAMPTON PARK BOWLS MIDWEEK PENNANT It was another great week for the Hampton Park Bowls Club with three sides recording wins and one a near miss against top side, Beaumaris.

It was a particularly tight game between Hampton Park and Cardinia Waters in Division 2, with only three shots deciding the result.

Rhonda Diaper, Shane Collins, Andrew Brandolin, and skip Neville Hendrie went down by three shots (16-13) while Ray Wood, Toni Sutton, Helen Lambert and skip Denise Eastick missed out by one shot, 19-18. Geoff Ladner, Stuart Tokley, Ellen Smith and skip Christine Hendrie won by seven shots, 23-16, to give the Parkers an overall win as Hampton Park defeated Cardinia Waters 12-54 to 4-51.

In six-a-side Division 1, another very good win kept the side in second place, and it will play finals. Brian Diaper, Ron Beverly and skip Rob Woff won by eight shots, 23-15, while Lou Soligo, Janice Collins and skip Marion Battaglia were up by 10 shots, 21-11.

Hampton Park 14-44 defeated Berwick 0-26.

SATURDAY PENNANT In a thrilling game against Division 2's top side Beaumaris, the Parkers won three rinks and went down by just four shots. Ian Kitt, Christine Hendrie, Gavin Wilson and skip Larry Simpson were outplayed on the day (1137). Val Moore, Helen Lambert, Chris Barnes and skip Steve Barnes got up on the last end to win by one shot, 18-17. Mat McLaverty, Neville Hendrie, Shane Collins and skip Mark Paton held the lead all day to win by five shots, 27-22.

After winning an amazing 16 ends, Geoff Ladner, Sean McDonald, Andrew Brandolin and skip Warwick Hardy won by 16 shots - 30-14.

Hampton Park 6-86 lost to Beaumaris 12-90 In Division 4, beating Pakenham on its home green was quite an achievement for the Hampton Park side. A strong finish by Richard Pallett, Janice Collins, Ellen Smith and skip Toni Sutton gave them a one-shot win, 18-17.

Even though their lead was cut in half, Val Simpson, Bill Webb, Marion Battaglia and skip Denise Eastick still managed to win by nine shots, 30-21.

On a sadder note, Mavis Kelly passed away on Friday evening at the age of 88. She was a much loved and respected member of the bowls club and will always be remembered for her outstanding work. Rest in Peace.

NARRE WARREN BOWLS Narre Warren's midweek Division 2 team still has a chance of playing finals after its win against Noble Park and a loss by the team above them. Only three points separates the two teams, and they must win their last game.

Against Noble Park at Fountain Gate, Geoff Ampt, Alan Mark, Keith Mark and Jim Millar won well (26-12) while Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, Wally Finlayson and Rod Lane won 15-12 in a close one. Arthur Fitt, Judy Naughton, Eric Sydenham and Wilma Stevenson went down 13-23.

Narre Warren (1) 14-54 defeated Noble Park (1) 2-47.

Also at Fountain Gate, Division 3 had a good win against Chelsea. Len O'Brien, Nick Filius, Rose Rasmussen and John Green won well (23-13) and Jen Sherry, Pam Uren, Micki Horton and Glen Cadman won 20-12. Pauline Kempf, Nancy Pugh, Truus Henneman and Peter Castricum just missed the win, going down 14-15.

Narre Warren (2) 14-62 defeated Chelsea (1) 2-40.

The still-improving Division 1 (six-a-side) had another strong game away against Waverley Golf. Stan Bulmer, Helen McCarthy and Andy Tobler drew 19-19, while Jeanette Cox, Jacqueline Moody and Paul McNamara went down 15-25.

Narre Warren (3) 1-34 lost to Waverley Golf (4) 11-44.

Saturday saw a change of fortune, especially for Division 2. Playing at Cranbourne they had a close win. Joe Selfridge, Wally Finlayson, Rod Lane and Cam Lee won 27-14 and Geoff Ampt, Eric Sydenham, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson won 25-15. Mark Groom, Carl Lapham, Graham Dodd and Jim Millar made a late comeback to go down 13-23 and John Wright, Percy Herath, Keith Mark and Zak Storm faded after the break to lose 9-20.

Narre warren (1) 14-74 defeated Carnbourne (1) 4-72.
