Courage aplenty there were many responders on that night, including eight from Monbulk CFA, four from Kallista-The Patch CFA, Emerald SES members and Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

"It was an extremely stressful incident. Everyone's got their own individual story; it's not a common job that you would expect to see," Captain Toender said.

At the time, Eli had been asleep in his bedroom when the storm hit, while his sister had been watching television in the loungeroom.

A 30m tree fell on the home about 9pm.

Emergency services arrived at the property just 10 minutes later, but Eli had passed away at the scene.

Eli's funeral was held in March 2015, where hundreds gathered at the Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn to say their farewells.

said the unit is proud of all those who responded on that night, including SES member Jim Paxton.

"During this event, he showed professional leadership skills and courage on the day when the Emerald Unit was called to assist at a rescue ... from a collapsed house," he said.

"Jim was the first SES member on the scene to support the CFA volunteers and Ambulance Victoria staff, and was acknowledged for his dedication to his community in a difficult situation."

The CFA Chief Officer's Commendation for Courage recognises service carried out under conditions that demand self-discipline without the thought of personal recognition, or for an act of bravery during dangerous circumstances.

Captain Toender said the commendations aren't widely presented and is a respected, prestigious award.

The Dandenong Ranges' finest were acknowledged on Sunday 18 February for services carried out under exceptional circumstances, with five CFA Chief Officer's Commendations for Courage being presented.

Both Monbulk and Kallista-The Patch CFA brigades received the commendations, in addition to individual recognitions for Monbulk CFA members Rohan Piesley and Daryl Owen, as well as Emerald SES member Jeff Paxton.

Operations Manager CFA District 13, David Rankin, on behalf of the CFA's Chief Officer Steven Warrington, presented the Emerald SES award.

The incident involved the tragic 2015 death of toddler Eli Marnock, 2, who was killed when a tree fell on his family's home at The Patch during a severe storm.

Eli's sister, Nicola, then aged 5, was trapped and injured during the incident, and the responders' efforts helped to save her life.

The scene they faced in February 2015 has been described as 'horrific', as the tree completely crushed the house, with concerned family members nearby.

Kallista-The Patch CFA Captain Peter Toender was one of the first to the scene and said it had left an indelible impression on many.

"At first, it seemed to be a benign call, but you never really know until you get there," Captain Toender said.

"But what we faced was the entire house disintegrated and the parents were extremely worried. All we knew was there was a little girl trapped inside. Unfortunately (her brother, Eli) the two-year-old died."

By Derek Schlennstedt There are cat cafes, dog cafes, even goat yoga, and now a collaboration between the Dandenong Ranges Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage and yoga instructor India Barnard has resulted in something that's both cute and cathartic.

For the majority of people as we get back into the rhythm of work and life, the motivation to exercise begins to wilt, but would working out in the company of adorable bunny rabbits give you a boost?

Fortunately, this is exactly what the Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage (RRO) in conjunction with Yoga Instructor and founder of The Generous Yogi, India Barnard is offering.

Unfortunately though, Bunny Yoga is currently only available at one location in Melbourne - a city in the midst of a rabbit overpopulation crisis.

"Pet rabbits are being abandoned in streets and parks across the city and the orphanage in conjunction with the Generous Yogi are hoping to shed some light on this plight," Dr Judi Inglis, founder of RRO said.

"I did some figures and we've taken in seventy four rabbits since November, and that's huge within three months and that's not including February."

"We're getting calls from Werribee, Bundoora, everywhere."

During the $31.20 hour class, 30 yoga members have to be particularly careful about where they put their feet as anywhere between 10 and 16 rabbits hop around the room, under posing legs and arms.

Now in its fourth session, India and Judi came up with the idea in the hope that classes would encourage people to adopt rescued rabbits and to raise awareness of the problems the creatures face.

"Basically I always wanted to animal yoga and rabbits are my favourite animal so I

"All the sessions so far have sold out ... I do very slow, very basic movements , no jumping, and it's all a bit bizarre.

"The bunnies relax, they do their little binkies (a happy rabbit expression) and jump on people ... the bunnies really love it and so do the people."

Of course India also promotes the need to take care of the animals properly and many of the bunnies in the classes are available for adoption.

"I promote good rabbit care and try to find them a good home ... we advocate that their up for adoption," said India.

"There's always a lot of people asking for adoption afterwards.

The yoga poses are done in several fenced off sections with each section containing a number of bunnies.

All the funds raised go towards the RRO and the next session will be held on Sunday 4 March at Mark Street Hall in Fitzroy.

Everyone is helping out

By Derek Schlennstedt After a 30 minute operation left Emerald resident Kate Arnott in a coma for three weeks, the hills community has rallied to help her family with the costs and hospital fees.

On 11 January, Kate (38) went in for a day surgery on her sphincter of oddi - a muscular valve that controls the flow of digestive juices through ducts from the liver and pancreas.

The relatively simple operation required a stent to be put in the valve, though there was a 20 per-cent chance of getting pancreatitis which Kate got.

The next few weeks, were described by her partner, Ellysa Arnott as a journey through the 'depths of despair,' and one which doctors even thought she might not live through.

"Unfortunately she got pancreatitis straight away after the operation," said Ellysa "She was in the ward for five days and then on the Tuesday she went into ICU. "By the Thursday of the next week she was incubated and put on a ventilator and from there it's been a journey of several operations and internal bleeding, and all sorts of things.

"The doctors thought she was dying."

The ordeal has not only impacted on Kate's family but the wider community with the Arnott family known throughout the Dandenong ranges and the hills community.

Though, hardest hit by the trauma and the likelihood of Kate never waking up was Jemima, Ellysa and Kate's seven-year-old daughter.

"Jemima turned seven on January 31 and had her party on Sunday, 4 February," said Ellysa.

"After her party we had to be realistic with her and tell her that Kate might not make it ... you're programmed not to hurt your child so to tell her that was very difficult and as a family to think we were all going to have to say goodbye to Kate was incomprehensible."

IN BRIEF Belgrave South robbery Police are appealing for assistance to identify a male in relation to an armed robbery at a supermarket in Belgrave South on 19th Feb at about 1.15pm.

The attendant was allegedly assaulted with a baseball bat and a hammer during the offence and required hospital treatment.

Tecoma station damage Police are seeking to identify a man following a criminal damage incident at Tecoma Railway Station on Saturday, 3 February 2018.

At around 1:50am, it is alleged a man repeatedly kicked and used track ballast to damage the MYKI machine and card readers at the station.

The damage caused during the incident totalled approximately $30,000.

Lysterfield larceny Between 7 and 8am on February 26, two vehicles parked at Lysterfield Lake were broken into and items were stolen from them.

Offenders have gained access to the car by breaking the windows with a brick or other solid object and have taken bank cards amongst other items.

Belgrave Police allege that a black or red vehicle with two males inside was seen in the area, and would like to talk with those individuals.

Drunk driver Olinda Police intercepted a drunk driver along Mount Dandenong Tourist Road on 25 February at 10:25pm.

The 33-year-old man from Olinda was seen driving erratically towards road works, where a traffic controller had to jump out of the way of the car.

The man was stopped by the road works which were being undertaken and police were called.

Olinda Police conducted a roadside breath test and recorded a reading of 0.116, double the limit.

Sergeant Andrew Herdman said the driver received and infringement notice and was also charged with exceeding .05 and careless driving.

The rescue crew On Saturday 24 a high angle rescue crew from Dandenong and a steep angle rescue crew from Monbulk responded to an involving a young boy who had fallen 30 metres down the Wilhelmina Falls in the Murrindindi Scenic reserve near Glenburn.

Also attending the incident were Marysville SES, Yea rescue, Glenburn CFA, Ambulance, Police and DELWP services.

Upon getting there a command structure was put in place and local brigades established a communications plan.

Each agency had a particular skill set which when coordinated all contributed to the overall best outcome for the patient.

The patient sustained minor injuries but was airlifted to the Royal Children's Hospital as a precaution and further scans were undertaken.

In this case, winch and transport was by HEMS.

Stop! Please don't bother seeing that knee surgeon until you've really attempted and followed through with a 'decent' physio rehab with.

The research I am going to present to you may be alarming, so have a seat.

As a young graduate in the late 1990s, we were drilled that knee arthroscopy 'clean outs' were a given for meniscal (cartilage) tears and degenerative or wear and tear, and that ligament reconstructive surgery was needed for cruciate ligament injury (ACL and PCL).

But all is not as it seemed.

For meniscus tears, less than six months old, studies recently found small results in favour of surgery compared with physiotherapy and exercise for up to six months.

'No' differences were found at 12 months and longer-term follow-ups for pain and function.

Add in the effects of general anaesthetic, risk of infection, time off work etc.

son to have surgery for a torn meniscus, is the presence of a mechanical lock or block in movement that wasn't there prior to the injury.

For degenerative or osteoarthritic knees, the evidence has been around since 2002 that arthroscopic surgery does not work.

More recent studies suggest for nearly all of these patients knee arthroscopy was no better than exercise therapy.

Knee replacement is the only definitive therapy, but it is reserved for patients with severe disease after non-operative management has been unsuccessful.

And the outcomes for surgery are always better combined with a pre-operative period of physiotherapy and exercise (pre-hab).

Similarly, the outcomes for ACL and PCL repair after two and five years post-injury is better for patients who undergo physiotherapy and exercise and have no surgery, or is delayed after a period of 'pre-hab'.

The only guidelines for having a knee reconstruction for ACL or PCL tears is if you participate in a high level activity that requires sudden stopping and pivoting (like AFL, netball, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics) or if you are experiencing ongoing subjective instability and pain.

For cruciate and meniscal surgery, there is no effect on developing arthritis in the future - the damage is done in the actual injury, though there is some limited evidence that surgery may actually worsen the likelihood of future arthritis.

By Peter Douglas Up-and-coming filmmaker Tadji Ulrich, 15, has taken out the coveted TropFest Jr prize for his short-film 'Outcasts Anonymous'.

Despite some incredible competition, the former Kallista Primary School student and Upwey local was awarded the top place at the world's largest short-film festival for junior entrants.

A panel of Australian screen stars selected Tadji's film from the prize, including Lincoln Younes ('Home & Away') and Sean Keenan ('Puberty Blues').

For the win, Tadji received a massive prize pack, including $1500 cash and a visit to an upcoming Australian film shoot, where he will meet the director and experience life on a film set.

Tadji said he never expected to win, although it represented a huge confidence boost to his budding career.

"I grew up watching TropFest and I could only ever image what it would be like to win.

I was in complete shock when I found out; I didn't even have a speech prepared," he said.

"This is my second film. The first was a nonnarrative film called 'I believe' ... but this is a mockumentary style film which I scripted and directed.

"This is the last time I can enter the Junior category, because I turn 16 this year."

'Outcasts Anonymous' has been described as a playful comedy follows a support group for supernatural beings, including a vampire, a ghost and a brotherly zombie duo, inspired by Taika Waititi's 'What We Do In The Shadows'.

TropFest Jr founder and executive chair, John Polson, described the film as "brilliant".

"It's awe-inspiring to see such young filmmakers tackling everything from light-hearted comedies to the real issues faced by kids and teens every day, with an incredible level of sophistication," he said.

"I have no reservations in saying that Tadji and the rest of these kids are really the future of filmmaking."

By Peter Douglas Community radio volunteers at 3MDR have been settling in to a new home, the heritagelisted Forest Park Homestead in Upwey.

After broadcasting for well-over 30 years, and from their temporary home in Emerald for 17 years, the many volunteers have embraced a new chapter in the station's history.

The team moved into the premises in December last year, re-establishing their broadcasting processes from Upwey.

The move, though, didn't come without great effort, according to station manager, Phil Ruck.

"Working bees and non-stop scrubbing have been the flavour of the month, with the administration team planning fundraisers in the future to recoup costs," he said.

"Hopefully, with this new space, we will be able to move away from the government

grants. We have all sorts of fundraising ideas, like in-house gigs or veranda parties."

With more than 90 presenters, and 100-plus volunteers, the station is reliant on community support.

One subscriber has donated and installed signage at the foot of the Forest Park Homestead driveway.

Meanwhile, the premises itself, a Victorian brick and weatherboard residence, is believed to have been the summer home of John or James Griffith, of Griffith Bros. Tea. In 1901, the brothers were growing and selling tea from a property in Melbourne's outer east, producing the nation's first home grown tea.

Neesy Smith, a volunteer producer, described the station's new home as 'total heaven'.

Musical gift for all

Much worse around than Billy

By Peter Douglas Nine local musicians and singers are offering a musical gift to help women and children experiencing homelessness.

After a successful event last year, the Sacred Stage charity concert will be held on Sunday 4 March, at 2pm, at the Sassafras Kennon Memorial Uniting Church.

Performer and event coordinator, Jacqui Rutten, said there would be plenty of entertainment for a variety of musical tastes.

"There are Irish folk songs, Celtic harp, Brahms songs, a Schubert sonata for viola, a viola and piano piece by Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin," she said.

"I am also premiering new compositions, including one called Lyrebird Song (bulenbulen) for voice and piano, compared here in the hills, at the forest edge with pen an paper."

Ms Rutten said this year Oxfam is also involved.

They will provide delicious homemade afternoon tea, while the money from the 'cuppa' and cake will go to Oxfam.

Harpist Elizabeth is set to entertain local audiences.

Carey Williams of Gembrook has again attacked Puffing Billy through his letter, 'Puffing silly' (Mail, 12 February 2018).

He is offended by the locomotives' 'repeated and triumphant whistling, penetrating great distances'.

Not only does Mr Williams not comprehend the importance of warning motorists of trains approaching level crossings, but then attacks the happiness of passengers and staff waving to motorists, most of whom wave back.

He complains about coal and smoke invading his nostrils.

Mr Williams, during your ever-so-brief and occasional encounters with our trains at level crossings, why not wind up your car windows, turn on the air conditioning, tune your car radio to music of your choice and contain your angst?

Mr Williams then attacks the 'numerous occasions the engine emits vile plumes of filth into the atmosphere we breathe'.

He then infers that it's part of the attraction to give our children a happy childhood at the expense of retreating glaciers and melting icecaps.

There are many other community attractions contributing vastly more noise and atmospheric contaminants than Puffing Billy.

The Albert Park grand prix and the Avalon Airshow are two that spring to mind.

But, I forgot, these events are far from Gembrook and would not rate a mention by our correspondent.

Fluoride worse than loco In relation to Carey Williams's letter 'Puffing silly' (Mail, 12 February 2018).

In reference to Carey's observation on Puffing Billy and its 'obnoxious, belching fumes' ... aren't we all who do our regular burn-off, weekly or monthly, combined, causing the same problem?

And, come to think of it, hasn't there been a massive increase in belching volcanoes, not seen before in our direct history?

But, more to my point, a subject that totally outweighs the above problems - in closer to home (in fact, in our homes as a necessity) - is fluoridated drinking water.

Whether you are aware or not, our basic commodity that we all rely on (water, which contains fluoride) is a neurotoxin and has been shown to cause arthritis, skeletal fluorosis, osteoporosis, cancer, pineal gland calcification and thyroid problems.

Hills hub is on its way

Site works have commenced on the highly anticipated Emerald Hills Hub. Initial works on the $6.63 million development involve fencing and signage installation, the identification and safe removal of asbestos from the materials used in the existing building, preparation and commencement of demolition works, and tree protections work with some minor vegetation removal.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Collin Ross said the project would rejuvenate the community space on the corner of Belgrave-Gembrook Road in Emerald and provide a much-needed upgrade to the facilities used by so many dedicated volunteers and community groups.

"This major new community hub will bring a range of existing community groups and activities under one roof," councillor Ross said.

"The new building will provide additional multi-purpose meeting and activity spaces for community use and give this vibrant hills community an equally vibrant space to share in and grow."

The project is funded thanks to $4.88 million from Cardinia Shire Council's Capital Works Program, a grant of $1.5 million under the Australian Government's National Stronger Regions Fund, and $250,000 from the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Group and Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group.

According to the shire, the Hills Hub project has been a collaborative effort between the council and the community-established Hills Hub Advisory Committee who have met monthly since February 2015.

The advisory group consists of a wide range of stakeholders including facility user groups,

Cr Ross said the council was grateful to all those who had helped drive the project.

"We are thrilled to hear the groups that use the facilities here are excited about the changes ahead and what possibilities and opportunities will open up for them and the community when the new building is complete," he said.

"During this first stage of site establishment, there will be a lot happening to prepare the site for construction of the new building.

"Council will be continuing to work with the advisory group and to communicate with the local community about the progress and any impacts of the project."

Get ready to reconnect Cire Services' Reconnect program is designed to offer extra support services for community members who are aged 17-64 and who have not been in full-time employment within the last 12 months and didn't finish year 12 or an equivalent qualification.

It is fully funded by the State Government, meaning that eligible participants get the support and assistance they require.

"In the current market being unemployed can be pretty tough, as is having to rely on public transport which can only compound the issue," Cire pre-accredited team leader Nina Bekker said.

"Feeling isolated and not knowing where to turn can really knock a person's confidence, this is where Reconnect can offer a helping hand."

The Cire Training Skills First Reconnect Program helps support eligible participants in many differing ways.

The program is individualised to each person and provides ongoing mentorship and support for up to 18 months.

"It is an individualised program so each person's journey will be different," Nina said.

"It can range from and include assisting with referrals and support to access other services such as mental health, legal, medical, Centrelink and housing. Reconnect can help expand the person's social networks and connections within the community, provide intensive support tailored to individual strengths and interests and help plan and achieve goals which could include being successful at gaining a learners permit to completing a short course or securing housing.

I proclaim this a failure Sunshine on Leith Starring George MacKay, Kevin Guthrie, Freya Mavor and Antonia Thomas Rated PG Structured around the songs of the band The Proclaimers, Sunshine on Leith is a spirited yet insubstantial Scottish musical from 2014, and was screened at the Healesville Memorial Hall by the Yarra Ranges Film Society (YRFS) on February 20.

Two British Army servicemen, Davy (George MacKay) and Ally (Kevin Guthrie), must weather various personal and relationship troubles after returning home to Edinburgh.

Sunshine on Leith has endearing, well-developed characters, beautiful cinematography and some funny moments. I also like the film's focus on independence and personal callings, and how it frames Ally's military service and his girlfriend Liz's (Freya Mavor) ambitions in medicine as equally valid.

However, there is very little sense of enduring conflict, and the musical sequences, while initially fun, become wearying due to how many there are (a whopping fourteen) in quick succession. The film also feels emotionally manipulative at times, placing an excessive level of the burden on its female characters to resolve their relationship problems.

The onus is not on Jean (Jane Horrocks) to live with her husband Rab's (Peter Mullen) past infidelity, as she wasn't the one who betrayed their trust, and Davy even repeatedly asks his girlfriend Yvonne (Antonia Thomas) if she wants to make things work in the climax, despite him being the one who refused to compromise. *The YRFS screens an acclaimed classic or foreign film every month at the Warburton and Healesville cinemas.

Monbulk chased down Knoxfield's 97 thanks to Chris Broekhof (3/17). In response, Tom Watson (45*) led the way as the Hawks finished at 2/98.

Ferntree Gully Footballers and Monbulk will face each other next week in the Decoite Qualifying Final, while Rowville and Lysterfield will do battle in the elimination final.

Powerhouses go head-to-head in some wild weather

By Chris Anderson Inconsistent weather hampered proceedings on the weekend for cricketers around the Yarra Valley, with dark skies and persistent rain affecting most games.

The big clash in the Yarra Valley's top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, was the first-versus-second clash between Warburton-Millgrove and Mount Evelyn being played at neutral territory at Woori Yallock.

After playing off in last season's decider, the two teams have once again been the clear frontrunners for the season.

The players certainly delivered on day one.

The Burras elected to bat first and initially battled through some disciplined bowling and some tough seeing conditions.

Star pairing Sean Humphrey (45) and David Lever (30) gave their side the perfect platform for a big score as they saw off a quickly deteriorating new ball.

Gareth Fraser (2/51) was able to breathe life into Mount Evelyn's challenge removing the openers; and with the score at 2/86 off 43 overs at tea, the innings was set for an intriguing innings.

With wickets in the bank, Warburton-Millgrove upped the ante and found scoring a little easier after the break.

A string of useful innings from Liam Barnard, Ben Lever, Tim McKail and Carl Morgan ensured a lift in tempo, while regular wickets, particularly to Chad Witherdin (4/54), ensured the final total would blow out to unchaseable proportions.

When stumps were drawn, the Burras had posted a commanding 8/245 on the back of a team performance with the bat.

The visitors also possess a potent batting line-up, and will be looking to develop their innings in a similar way.

Country week Along with local action this week, the cream of the Yarra Valley have been involved in VCCL Country Week action.

With a change to game structure and competition structure, the boys from the Valley looked forward to the challenge the week provides.

Unfortunately, the challenge was on another level as the Yarra Valley battled in each of the contests.

Day one saw former local legend Dan Mock take his brethren apart with a scintillating century leading Leongatha & District to 6/329.

The Valley boys battled gamely in chase in the back of Kane Jones' blistering 87, but their efforts were futile as the finished well short at 9/240.

Day two saw a contest with neighbours Ferntree Gully and District, and again the Valley were caught short against the eventual champions.

Ferntree Gully batted first and amassed an impressive 6/355 on the back of a Tom Boxell

century.

The Yarra Valley were never in the chase, despite solid contributions from David Lever (47) and Dean Oliffe (49), with their score closed at 9/166.

Batting first on day three against Shepparton, the Yarra Valley were looking for a change in fortunes.

The Yarra Valley cobbled together a useful total of 8/206, mainly on the back of a 78-run partnership between David Lever (55) and Kane Jones (49).

The total would prove to be well short as Shepparton reached the total on the 35th over with six wickets in the back.

Nick Bark gave his all to give the team some spark with 3/44, but his efforts were in vain.

That left the team in a precarious position for day four.

Under the new structure, they would face South West in a game to define who would

stay in Division 2 of the competition and who would slip back to Division 3.

With that at stake, the Yarra Valley produced their best performance with the ball of the week.

Battling to post a defendable score, the Valley limped to 9/138, far from an imposing total.

The bowlers, bitten by a tough week at the office, then produced when it mattered to bowl South West out for 104.

A victory that will ensure a place in Division 2 at next year's carnival.

Monbulk takes on Croydon as near-equals on ladder On Saturday, Monbulk 1, which were equal fourth on the ladder, played Croydon, which were third.

The prize for the winner was a finals place.

The weather conditions made bowling difficult, but both teams battled on.

The game was close up until the tea break with only one shot separating both sides, with Croydon having its nose in front.

After the break, Monbulk were able to gain a lead and led by as much as 10 shots.

Croydon rallied and going into the last end Monbulk led by one shot.

Eric Markham's rink gained a big lead early, but were pegged back in the last nine ends to win by five shots, 22 to 17.

Richard Cookson's rink fought hard and were holding game with 2 bowls to go.

However, the Croydon skip trailed the jack to give his rink a win by 2 shots, 20 to 18.

Andrew Bell's rink found the going tough all day eventually going down by 10 shots, 12 to 22.

Monbulk must now beat Ringwood in round 18 and hope that other results go its way

to make the finals.

Tuesday pennant saw Monbulk 1 taking on Eastwood Golf at home with a win meaning the team could move into second place on the table.

Monbulk established a lead early and was able to maintain a comfortable margin winning by 15 shots, 69 to 54.

Jim Bras's rink had a good day winning by 9 shots 25 to 16.

Andrew Bell's rink won by 7 shots and Eric Markham's rink went down by 1 shot.

Monbulk 2 played Upwey-Tecoma but were no match for the home side losing by 44 shots, 83 to 39.

Graeme Goller's and Eric Furby's rinks both went down by 16 shots and Ted Tratt's rink lost by 12 shots.

Monbulk 3 played the top side Glen Waverley away from home and were able to produce an upset, winning by 15 shots, 60 to 45.

Peter Francis's rink had a day out winning 18 shots, 26 to 8.

Ray Pike also had a good win by 7 shots, 12 to 19 and Lorraine McLaren went down by 10 shots, 15 to 25.

The championships, for athletes between 12 and 19 years old draws, the top athletes from around the state and further afield.

A third new model, the premium and sporty HiLux Rogue was styled by the Australian design team and developed in close collaboration with Toyota engineers in Thailand.

The dynamic and recreational styling of the Rogue is tailored to many markets around the world - another example of the strong capability that exists within Toyota's local operation.

Toyota Australia's product planning and development general manager Rod Ferguson said the HiLux project highlighted the local team's capability to develop engaging models that address the specific requirements of Australian buyers.

"Our team understands local customer usage and tastes, the extremes of our local environment as well as requirements for off-road use, unsealed roads and the challenges of dust and water crossings," Mr Ferguson said.

"They have developed these high-strength components and integrated them fully to build on the strength and durability of HiLux while maintaining the performance of key safety systems.

"For example, the Rugged X bash plate is made from high-tensile alloy, significantly improving protection from rugged terrain while minimising weight increase. Local engineering and testing also ensures it works in conjunction with the steel front bar and existing underbody protection."

Mr Ferguson said the project was a logical extension of the local team's work in producing the HiLux Tonka concept, unveiled in March last year.

He said the new models also benefited from the Australian team's extensive involvement in developing the current-generation HiLux, including suspension, underbody protection, tuning of electronic safety systems and 650,000km of local testing.

"It was natural for our team to focus on HiLux: it's Australia's best-selling vehicle and owners customise their HiLux more than any other model in our range," he said.

"In the spirit of the concept car, we've further enhanced the off-road toughness of the already highly capable HiLux. "Australian buyers will also appreciate the peace-of-mind knowing that these new vehicles have been developed to Toyota's rigorous standards, will be certified to Australian Design Rules and attract full warranty coverage," Mr Ferguson said.
