Pacing Cup set to shine By Russell Bennett The Cranbourne Harness Racing Club is set to shine for the running of the Decron Cranbourne Pacing Cup to be held during the night race meet on Saturday, 3 March. With a great night of racing and the Group 2, $50,000 Decron Pacing Cup as a feature, it's the perfect night to host a group of family friends or work colleagues. The atmosphere at Cranbourne is unique in itself, being a country cup in the outer southeastern suburbs of the city. "On a Saturday night they draw a massive crowd out there and the facilities are second to none, and this is why Cranbourne has won the right to host a heat of the Inter Dominion later in the year because they really are, along
with Ballarat, the regional leaders in Victoria in terms of facilities," Bonnington said. "It's always well-catered for when it comes to families and kids, and you get that up close and personal atmosphere being there. Last year we were run in conjunction with the thoroughbreds and that was a great night but even on its own it's a magnificent night with great facilities and great atmosphere. Two unbelievably lucky competition winners will experience the thrill of genuine horsepower in a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on the Decron Cranbourne Pacing Cup Night on Saturday, 3 March. The competition winners will participate in a three-horse, double-seater sulky race. Teamed up with professional drivers, they will compete in a real race, complete with pounding hooves in front of a big race crowd and live commentary. The race will be held under real racing conditions with the same strict safety standards applying. Drivers wear protective clothing including safety vests and helmets and all of this is provided as part of the competition package. SKY Racing personality Jason Bonnington has been involved in the race before against Simon Marshall, Daniel Harford, and Kevin Bartlett. He said he's back for redemption this year after things didn't exactly go according to plan last time around. "All I can say is that for anyone who's never done it before it's an experience they will not forget," he said. "It's a lot faster and a lot more hectic than they might be expecting. "It's safe and all the rest of it, but you really know you're moving. "You'll certainly get a real life experience the way you can't get in either of the other racing codes. City of Casey’s durable chief executive Mike Tyler has stepped down in sudden and mysterious circumstances. Mr Tyler had “mutually agreed” with Casey that “now is the right time to move on,” according to a statement by the council on 21 February. He leaves the job on 22 February, with no official explanation from the council of why there was a parting of ways. Mr Tyler had served as the council’s one and only chief executive for 23 years, overseeing a municipality that rapidly grew from 130,000 residents to more than 300,000. He’d worked for Casey and City of Berwick for more than 36 years. Two years ago, Mr Tyler’s reign was extended for four years - until 2020. The re-appointment was made by a previous term of councillors, who controversially chose not to advertise the $350,000-plus annual position. Now, Mr Tyler says it is time to move on and allow other leaders to shape the council’s future direction. He told Star News he had it in mind for some time that this would be his last year in the job but there had been on official decision until this week. The move into Bunjil Place late last year heralded the right time for Casey to move into new leadership, he said. Asked to describe his emotions, Mr Tyler said he was “very happy”. “I am going out on a high,” he said. “I can look back with a lot of pride at what has been achieved and Council and I have come to a fair agreement.” Mr Tyler leaves as the longest serving council CEO in Victoria, the only one remaining of the original appointees following the Jeff Kennett-inspired council amalgamations in the mid-1990s. He said he hoped his legacy would be considered the four major projects undertaken by Casey under his leadership - Casey Arc, Casey Race, Casey Fields and Bunjil Place - the latter the most ambitious infrastructure undertaking by a council in the country. He recalled being told by a manager when planning Casey Arc that the project would cost him his career. Mr Tyler said he had no plans - beyond training for triathlons - but his mind was not closed to any career opportunities that may arise. Speculation had swirled around Mr Tyler’s tenure in recent days, intensified by his unexplained absence at a Casey general meeting on 20 February. Continued on page 4

Surely, after preying on the underprivileged or disabled, the next lowest crime is to effectively steal someone's job. Because if you're the kind of low-life who steals a tradie's tools, for example, then that's exactly what you're doing. And it's not just the tradies. Often a family is hurt, too, as a partner at home and the kids are also deprived of an income. Then comes the impact on business itself, and on the other companies the victim deals with. When a business is put out of commission through vandalism or the like, the results are the same. And we hasten to point out that these offenders are not starving, they're not seeking food - just items of value they can transform into cash. If someone has decided on a life of crime, it seems a forlorn hope that they might have some regards and consideration for their victims. Nevertheless, stopping this rash of crime against business might be a good first step to slightly easing the pressure on everyone at a difficult time. And here's a challenge to the not so heroic buglars and thieves - build something, rather than destroy it. Put your lives on the line, and try to start your own small business. - Jason Beck

City of Casey Project Manager- Bunjil Place Close Out Projects, Mark Dibsdale said very strong winds last Thursday, 15 February caused a number of small roof cladding panels on the southern side of Bunjil Place to become dislodged and pushed back onto the roof. "The cause of the issue was a panel fixing, which has only been used on this particular section of the structure, which failed to hold in the gusty conditions," Mr Dibsdale said. "The roof has been made safe, engineers are investigating, and rectification works will be undertaken soon."
Blaze engulfs home A fire has gutted a single-storey house in Warneet on Tuesday, 6 February but luckily no one was injured. Emergency services were called to the Warneet Road address about 9am and found the house well-alight. Thirteen firefighters from Warneet, Tooradin and Cranbourne fire brigades fought the blaze and stopped its spread to surrounding homes. No one was home at the time and it's believed the fire started from the kitchen. Warneet Blind Bight fire brigade captain Hans Dekracker said the fire was contained by 11am but caused extensive damage to most rooms. "More than half the house is well and truly gone and the rest is water and smoke damaged," he said. "It got very hot in all the bedrooms paint

Graffiti crew leaves a mess A traffic collision between two vehicles including a graffiti removal truck resulted in the spillage of chemicals on a busy highway in Lynbrook on Friday, 9 February. Ten firefighters from Hallam and Hampton Park fire brigades responded to the incident on the South Gippsland Highway at about 11am. A Hazardous Materials Unit also attended to handle the chemical containment and cleanup. It's believed a drum carrying cleaning chemicals had split on the truck's load. The incident forced the closure of all northbound lanes on South Gippsland Highway near Evans Road. All lanes didn't reopen until about 1.50pm. Hallam Senior Station Officer Stephen Keating said in addition to the split chemical drum they had found another leak coming from the back of the truck. "After testing we were able to confirm that there was the water tank in the vehicle that had split as well." "We had at least one chemical drum that had split and two others lost their lids," he said. He said part of the highway was closed so firefighters could safely contain the chemicals. "It's an inconvenience to all the road users but better to be safe than sorry." No one was injured in the collision, he said.

Tradie gutted after theft By Brendan Rees A tradie has been left devastated after thieves allegedly stole his work trailer in Cranbourne East during the early hours of Tuesday morning, 20 February. Builder Steve Hillis, who runs his own business, Hillis Building Group, said he had left his trailer, worth $2000, parked at the front of work mate's house on Gwenton Avenue. He said the six-by-four, single-axle trailer was secured to a car with a padlock. "They've cut the locks and taken the whole trailer," Mr Hillis said. "It was a perfect night for it because it was nice and loud and windy." Mr Hillis was alerted by his work mate that his trailer was stolen, which is believed to have happened between 2am and 3am. "I'm getting over it to be quite honest ... You try and do the right thing, pay your taxes, build up at business and you get these pr****." Mr Hillis was left further seething as he had lost $8000 worth of tools that were also in the trailer. "It's a bloody inconvenience, you work a 50-60-hour week just to get on top, give your workers a job and income and this someone comes and knocks this off". Cranbourne police are investigating and were enquiring with residents for any CCTV footage. "We think it may have been around 3am when the reporting person has heard their dogs barking but they kind of put it down to the wind," Senior Constable Jess Brookens said. She said police were unable to take fingerprints from the padlock has it had been touched by the victim. No witnesses were also known at this stage, she added. Mr Hillis said it was the third time in threeand-a-half years that his business had been targeted by thieves.

The City of Casey will mark 150 years to the day since the Shire of Cranbourne was proclaimed with a free community celebration on Saturday 24 February 2018. The 150th anniversary event will take place in Greg Clydesdale Square, with historic displays, local performers, free activities, a sausage sizzle and more. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said the celebration would be an opportunity to commemorate Cranbourne's history and celebrate its evolution over the past 150 years. "When the Shire of Cranbourne was declared on 24 February 1868, it serviced a population of about 1,000 people made up of grazing and agricultural land and contained most of the Koo Wee Rup Swamp," Cr Ablett said. "It's a stark difference to the Cranbourne we know today; a large, growing and vibrant suburb home to more than 80,000 residents across Cranbourne North, South, East and West. "The 150th anniversary celebration is a

Thankyou, goodbye Yesterday I reached an agreement with council that now was an appropriate time for me to move on from council. I wanted you to hear this from me this morning rather than reading about it in a news release or article later in the day. I have been employed by council for 36 years; the most recent 23 as CEO of Casey. It has been an incredible journey, and one I look back on with both pride and happiness. Tomorrow (Thursday 23 February) will be my last day at Casey. When I was first appointed as CEO of Casey I stated that my aim was to make the new council the pre-eminent Victorian municipality. Those words have stayed with me, and I believe we have achieved that. So, too, does the council. As a town planner, what greater challenge and opportunity could there have been than to lead the fastest growing council in the state over the past 23 years. Our population has increased in that time by almost 200,000 people and the growth in our capital projects and our service delivery during that time has been phenomenal. The staff of council have been simply awesome; former Cr Mick Morland so often said that the staff are council’s greatest asset. He was right. The enthusiasm and commitment of the staff hardly wavered, and I know that there have been stresses and challenges along the way. There is no doubt that at the heart of our staff there is a commitment to serving the Casey community. For many, there is a passion for this which goes far beyond what might be expected. Investing in community facilities has always been one of my key objectives. Not only do facilities contribute so much to enhancing community life, they also contribute enormously to community pride. While there are numerous facilities that have

Cycling and triathlons are his passion and he will now have more time to pursue them. been developed over two decades throughout the community, there are four which I am particularly proud of: Casey ARC, Casey Race, Casey Fields and Bunjil Place. There are untold back stories about each - one I recall fondly in particular is being advised by a manager in the late 1990s (in what he thought was my best interest) that I should back off pushing for an aquatic leisure facility for Narre Warren or it would cost me my career! Of course Bunjil Place is the glittering jewel - a
facility that will meet community needs, provide massive community pride and at the same time is a wonderful working environment for many of our staff. I particularly love that staff at Bunjil Place rub shoulders with the community on an everyday basis in the foyer and the plaza. The financial plan which underlies the funding of Bunjil Place will continue to deliver benefits for decades. As I depart I am proud of what has been achieved, and perhaps more importantly how well the organisation is prepared for meeting the challenges ahead. The evolution of the organisation over the past three to four years with staff pitching in and embracing innovation, technology and agility has really set Casey up for a fantastic future. There has never been a time in Casey’s history where the stars are so well aligned. Casey is certainly the pre-eminent Victorian council, and I look forward to hearing about outstanding achievements into the future by the community, the staff and the council. Thank you to all of you for your efforts, commitment and support, and to many of you for your friendship. My immediate plans are to spend more time with my partner, Nat, and support her as her own career develops on the Gold Coast and to devote lots of time to cycling and running, and finally (after all these years) getting some stroke correction so that my swim leg in the triathlon isn’t the huge liability it has been. Of course my interest in cycling French mountains in the northern summer will continue, and in September I’ll have the World Championships in both Gran Fondo cycling (in Italy) and triathlon (on the Gold Coast) to train for. That’s going to be a really busy fortnight!

Mayor Geoff Ablett said Mr Tyler had strongly supported a significant capital works program with Bunjil Place setting a “new benchmark for suburban council facilities”. “It will be a long time until another council is able to develop such a facility. “Mr Tyler indicated he was proud of this achievement that council was able to carry out due to prudent and long-term financial planning.” In a statement, Casey Council described Mr Tyler achieving his stated aim of making City of Casey the “pre-eminent Victorian council”. Mr Tyler’s tenure was not without controversy. In 2013, he was spared conviction after pleading guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to breaching the Local Government Act by failing to properly disclose a conflict of interest to the council. The conflict of interest arose from a sexual harassment claim by a former council staff member against him and the council in 2011. It was confidentially settled during a mediated hearing at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal before Mr Tyler disclosed the matter to the council. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne said the CRRA had been surprised that Mr Tyler’s contract was renewed in 2015 given the breach. “We won’t be disappointed to see him go but we would like to know more about the circumstances about this mutual decision to move on.”

Toilet time at boat ramp By Brendan Rees City of Casey is calling on the state government to provide a badly needed toilet at a popular tourist spot in Warneet. Residents say it’s not an uncommon occurrence for boat users to be “dying for a pee” when returning to shore at the Warneet Boat Ramp. “It is something that is desperate for the area,” says Blight Bight resident and Captain of the Blight Bight Boat Club, Bob O’Connell. “Over a thousand people go out on the boat ramp on the weekend. Being out for six hours, I mean I’m busting myself to go to the toilet,” he said. Council unanimously endorsed a Notice of Motion by City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett at a Council meeting last year. Since then, a sign has been put up demanding the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) to install a toilet. Visitors have been forced to use the surrounding area as a makeshift toilet in what’s been deemed a looming threat to public health and hygiene. Cr Ablett held a meeting with residents at the boat ramp on Friday, 16 February, saying
there was an agreeance among those who attended that the problem was worsening. “The good thing is they all recognise we need something there. I really want to thank the people for coming out and putting their views forward,” he said. Cr Ablett urged the State Government to provide a solution at the foreshore which fell under the responsibility of DELWP. “Each week I hear of residents coming across pretty disgusting scenes, while disabled people and young children are often put in embarrassing situations through no fault of their own,” Cr Ablett said. “The closet toilet block is located approximately 200-300 metres from the boat ramp, which is too far to expect users to travel just to access public amenities.” “It’s also near impossible for people with a disability to access,” he said. Council has written to the Member for Bass Brian Paynter and Member for Hastings Neale Burgess, requesting their urgent support for accessible male and female toilets. A weekly bus tour of the Warneet foreshore which stops to have a picnic at the foreshore has struggled to accommodate tours due to the poor condition of toilets.
A push for a zebra crossing to be installed outside a retirement village in Cranbourne East has been knocked back by Casey Council. Proponent Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon says she will continue her fight for a pedestrian crossing on Rochester Parade - despite traffic figures not meeting Council requirements. She says the danger facing pedestrians at the location frightened her, particularly senior citizens from the nearby Hunters Green Retirement Village who frequently used the road to walk to a nearby shopping centre. “I don’t want to wait until an accident happens,” she said. Casey Council adopted a motion last December to investigate the installation of a pedestrian crossing on Rochester Parade. But after conducting a traffic survey on Rochester Parade outside the Hunters Green Retirement Village, the maximum number of pedestrians observed crossing the road in any one-hour period was only eight pedestrians and 236 vehicles. An overwhelming majority of vehicles were also observed driving at 46 km/h which was below the 50km/h speed limit of the road. A Council report noted that most pedestrians were occupants of the Hunters Green Retirement Village who walked to the Hunt Club Village Shopping Centre. “They (occupants) were all able to stage their crossing at the splitter island associated with the roundabout and no safety issues were observed,” the report said.

The cost of a flashing zebra crossing would cost Casey Council about $80,000-$100,000 to install - but is subject to approval from Melbourne Water as the road is considered an overland flow path. Cr Stapledon said: “It’s a lot of money but what kind of prices is there in investing in the safety of our residents.” “Our role as councillors is to stand up for the welfare and safety of our residents and I think we owe it to our seniors to make sure they are to remain as active as they can in a very safe way.” A report will come back to council in September.

I've just read in our local paper (Star Journal) an article that completely blew me away. The article on the front page of the paper (22 January) concerns a problem that I have as well as Mr J. Sarweh, Mr P. Romari and other local residents. Yes it's with our Casey (haven't got the money, or it would cost too much) Council. If you're a resident of Casey, trying to get something done is Mission Impossible. I've sent letters and petitions signed by every resident in Fugosia Street to have speed humps erected because drivers use it as a way to dodge the traffic lights at the intersection of Box and Paperbark streets in the early mornings and evenings, from 3.30 to 6pm. Yes, another rat-run is in the too-hard bas-
ket, which is bigger than most people think. Where did the money come from to build Bunjil Place (they spent millions of dollars on that building). Are the ratepayers going to have their rates increased to help pay for that 'Taj Mahal"? Surely while the Casey Council had their chequebook out to pay for Bunjil Place, they could have added $20,000 for speed humps in my street, and also for Mr J. Double trouble Dual citizenship has caused the resignation of many of the leading politicians.
The essence of Australian citizenship is the fact that over five million Australians are dual citizens. A very large percentage of these dual citizens have a right to vote and did exercise that right to vote. By extension the election of all the parliamentarians is illegal because they have been voted in by dual citizens. The government has two choices. One: To ban dual citizens from voting even though they may be Australian citizens. Two: To change the constitution by plebiscite allowing dual citizens to remain in Parliament and have the right to be elected to Parliament. The law cannot be right and wrong. A new $2.8 million two-storey building was officially opened at Lighthouse Christian College Cranbourne (LCCC) during a ceremony held on Wednesday, 14 February. The celebration included a performance by a group of Year 7 violinists in front of the school and the wider community. Guests included City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett, Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon and Leader of the Opposition Matthew Guy who participated in the cutting of the ribbon to mark the occasion. LCCC Principal Jacob Mathews said with about 100 new students starting every year, the school needed more space. “The school is growing rapidly with large classes and this new building has given the school room to expand and reduce the student numbers in each class,” he said. The building, which took just over 10 months to build includes 15 classrooms, a staffroom, an administration wing and student amenities. Mr Matthews said the project was completely funded by the school and without debt. He added more than 25,000 man hours were worked onsite and the building featured the school’s first lift. More 30 tonnes of steel was also used to create all beams and columns with three cranes being required during the building’s construction, he said. Speaking at the opening, Mr Matthews thanked everyone who had contributed to the building project and its successful completion. “To the parents of LCCC students, thank you for believing in the vision of this school and for supporting us with your prayers over the duration of the project and as we continue to expand.” “Our appreciation goes to the City of Casey Councillors, Victorian MPs, the media, pas-

School choir earns award

By Brendan Rees Students from Cranbourne East Primary School are hitting a high note with residents at a retirement village. The school choir which is made up of between 80 to 100 students from grade three to grade six, regularly perform for the senior citizens at Hunters Green Retirement Village who have developed a special connection with the children. In appreciation for their visits over the years, the Hunters Green Retirement Village residents association decided to present the choir with an appreciation plaque on Wednesday, 14 February. “They’re very entertaining and it’s just lovely especially in the retirement village, it’s nice to have some youth come in,” says the Vice Chair of the Hunters Green Retirement Village residents association, Anna Blyth. She said the committee members mentioned it would be nice to do something in appreciation for the choir’s efforts, who they say have such “bright, bubbly spirits”. “The choir director is so good with them. They really respond really well to what he’s trying to get out of these young people”. “It was a really nice experience and be amongst them. They’re so happy and polite,” she said. Cranbourne East Primary School Performing Arts Teacher Jason Beach said was a kind gesture for the retirement village to present the plaque. “The children love to sing and perform at school and can’t wait to head out into the local

He said the choir performs songs from the 50’s and 60’s to current day songs to cater for all kinds of musical lovers including kindergarten children to the elderly. “Over the past three years the choir has performed for their assemblies at school, live performances in front of the school and their parents alike.” “They have also gone out into the wider community by singing at kindergarten venues, shopping centres and retirement villages.”
A hoon driver has been spared conviction after spinning burnouts near cheering bystanders while his hands were off the steering wheel. Jacques Francois Gillian Jeanne, 26, pleaded guilty to dangerous and unlicensed driving after Dandenong Magistrates' Court viewed three minutes of video footage of the incident at Business Park Drive, Lynbrook in November 2016. In the video, Jeanne twice lets go of the steering wheel, holding up his hands as he spins a silver Hilux's rear tyres into shrieking clouds of smoke. "Hey mother f***er ... no hands OK, no hands OK," he says to a camera shot from close by. During the sequence, two males were filmed standing with their heads next to the ute's smoking tyres. They whoop and urge on Jeanne as the ute loses traction and leaves deep skids into the road. One of the cohort screams: "Let's go hit some corners! Gang, gang!" Defence barrister Anthony Schlicht said Jeanne had since "put his life back on track", accepting the incident was "foolish" and "foolhardy". Jeanne now worked two jobs including as a mechanic - which would make the mandatory loss of licence particularly onerous, Mr Schlicht argued. Magistrate Pauline Spencer had been dubious about defence's attempts to bargain down Jeanne's charge to careless driving. She said Jeanne was "showing off" while being videoed by others. It was that type of behaviour that was killing young people on the road. "What you were doing that night was dangerous and you certainly risked having something more serious happen.

"Unfortunately we see too often that a vehicle is a weapon in these cases." Ms Spencer said Jeanne's life was otherwise headed in a good direction, but for some prior traffic-related offences. "You have to put this behind you, put it down to youth, work hard and keep doing what you're doing." Jeanne was not convicted given he'd pleaded guilty, accepted responsibility and was a youthful offender, Ms Spencer said. He was fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for six months.

A Cranbourne P-plater was driving at twice the speed limit in Noble Park, police allege. The impounded the 22-year-old's car on Heatherton Road about 5pm on Friday 16 February. The Springvale officers allegedly detected him travelling at 119 kilometres an hour in a 60 zone. Winning out on diabetes Lynbrook resident Kerry Lambert was only 20 years old when she had to start injecting insulin. At the time, Kerry was pregnant with her first child, and the doctors initially believed she had gestational diabetes. However, one year after delivery, it was clear that Kerry required insulin for the rest of her life to manage her type one diabetes. Ms Lambert, now 71, was awarded with Diabetes Victoria’s Kellion Victory Medal at the Lynbrook Aged Care on Thursday, 15 February, for having lived with the disease for 50 years. The medal honours the lives of people who have lived with diabetes for many decades. Kerry remembers her initial difficulty in coming to terms with her diagnosis. “I was shocked as I had never heard of diabetes before,” she says. “In the beginning I found it very difficult as other people used to be wary of me and back away from me once they found out I had type 1 diabetes; they were unsure what it was or if it was contagious.” Today, diabetes is more widely understood, and Kerry acknowledges that people are far more educated and accepting of it. “Diabetes is not the end of the world. It can be a shock when you are first diagnosed, but there are ways you can manage and incorporate diabetes into your lifestyle. Find yourself a good doctor who can help you through the journey,” she said. Kerry is particularly grateful for the support of her own diabetes specialist, Dr Serge TangFui, whose kindness has helped her to accept her diagnosis.

Missionary trip eye-opener By Brendan Rees “They had tears in their eyes many times”. That’s how Pastor Phil Cayzer of Turning Point Church in Cranbourne East described the emotion of nine young people when they met children living in hardship in Africa. The year 11 students from the Lighthouse Christian College Cranbourne arrived home in January after spending four weeks providing aid to the children of Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Throughout their journey, the students provided relief to hospitals, visited schools and orphanages where they gave out gifts to children and hosted Sunday school groups at the local churches. Pastor Cayzer, who led the students on their first missionary trip with three other staff members from the church, says their lives will be forever changed. “We had a couple of young guys that were very shy but then to stand in front of a crowd of about 2000 and talk to them but they got used to it after the trip.” “They were incredibly changed,” he said. “They were able to inspire, they were happy to walk among the crowd.” He added his team was left in shock just by the simple act of handing out tennis balls to African children, which “nearly sent them crazy”. Some of the local kids had never seen gifts before such as toys, books, and coloured pencils, he said. He recalled visiting high schools in Kenya as a very powerful time as they had never had western visitors. “To actually just talk with us was a highlight of their education as well as finding out hearing what we do.” It was Pastor Cayzer’s fourth trip to Africa who says the students came back with wonderful memories and an awakening in their faith for God.
Lighthouse Christian College Cranbourne student Nyador Yual says her trip with eight other students to Africa was life changing. 177743 Picture: GARY SISSONS One student, 15-year-old Nyador Yual initially had trouble obtaining her passport months before the trip because she could not confirm her country of birth. “We found the problem was that she was actually not born in South Sudan; she was born in Kenya in a refugee camp because the family had to flee violence,” said Pastor Cayzer. He said she was unable to prove who her father was because he was murdered when her family sought refuge. Pastor Cayzer said the students took many things away from the trip. Running open concerts where the group drew large crowds was something the students highly enjoyed, he said. “Our guys put together dance routines because a number of them were from Samoa so they do Samoa dances; they also did some Africa dances”. He said the students also raised their own money to buy bags of flour, soup and rice for the patients at the hospital. “The hospital system is very different where they don’t have any care”. “So we would go in there and talk with them, encourage them, and then the main thing we could do is pray for them”.

Wayward Dees fall short By Nick Creely AFL WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 3 Inaccuracy, one of the biggest sins in football, saw premiership fancy Melbourne upstaged by Fremantle on Sunday, in a result that could shake things up as five teams remained locked on eight points. Hampered by a slow start, the Dockers found the four points via two impressive snap goals late by debutant Emily McGuire, ending the Demons’ unbeaten start to the season. But it wasn’t just McGuire’s snap goals that saw the Demons return across the Nullarbor disappointed, it was a wayward first quarter that cost them the chance to surge ahead in the game and provide a big enough of a gap. In the first term, the Demons couldn’t convert on the scoreboard despite their utter dominance, and despite Daisy Pearce (24 disposals) once again shining through sheer class in the midfield, once the ball got forward of centre, it was wasted opportunity after wasted opportunity. The Dockers clawed their way back in the second term to regain the lead, and in spits and spurts of momentum for both sides, the lead seesawed in the second half. With scores level 30-30 midway through the final term, McGuire iced the game with a brilliant snap from the pocket, sending the Dockers fans at Fremantle Oval into raptures. Mick Stinear didn’t hide his frustration at the wasted opportunities in the first quarter, but understands how difficult the competition is becoming “The frustration probably sinks in after the game, everything was going right, but just couldn’t convert on the scoreboard,” he said post-match. “We had to make the most of our opportunities, and Freo kicked six straight, so credit to them

Darling on the comeback trail By Nick Creely Aaron Darling will be entering this year’s TAC Cup season hell bent on making up for lost time. One of the hard luck stories of the 2017 AFL draft, Darling, 19, will return to the Dandenong Stingrays as a top age player in 2018 after recovering from a full knee reconstruction that ruined his 2017 season. Darling told the News his body is “100 per cent” heading into Round 1 against Geelong Falcons on Sunday 25 March, but won’t be rushed back in unnecessarily. “I’m kind of just ticking all the boxes and not really having my sights set on anything; it’s clearly good to have a goal at the end, but I just want to tick off each box as I go and see what happens,” he said. “I’ve been back at full training since the start of December so I’ve picked things up again really quickly.” The creative forward is also fully over missing out on the draft, even though he was part of the AFL Academy, but said he expects to mix some TAC Cup football with some VFL games as he pushes a case for an AFL spot in 2019. “I kind of knew coming into the draft that I didn’t have a great chance of going, and I hadn’t played much of late, so I’m just really excited to play,” he said. “I think the club will try and push me through the VFL early, either with Frankston or Casey, and hopefully push on from there. “I just really want to play footy.” But Darling said he’s learnt a lot from a year on the sidelines, saying he has found a new perspective on how to look at the game. “Even looking at football from a coaching side of things last year really helped, and I know my body a lot better now, so yeah, I definitely learnt a lot along the journey,” he said. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Hayley joins the team By Hayley Wildes The News sports desk is happy to announce Hayley Wildes as the newest addition to the team as a sports journalist. Hayley has long been involved with sport in the local area, including playing football and tennis. Her football journey began at Lang Lang Football Club in 2007, playing in the Under-13s, and continued to Cranbourne where she played eight seasons with the Eagles in Youth Girls and Women’s competitions. In 2016, Hayley was drafted by the Western Bulldogs in the AFLW competition and is currently playing in her second season with the team. Hayley has recently completed her studies at Deakin University in Burwood, graduating with a Degree in Sport Management, whilst majoring in Journalism. Having covered basketball and football at a local and national level, Hayley is thrilled to be joining Star News Group and is excited by the opportunity to cover all levels of sport in the region. Hayley is a basketball aficionado and diehard Boston Celtics fan who believes one can simply not have too much basketball in their life. New Blue Gee’s hard yards By Nick Creely As one of the most talented female footballers to come out of the South East Juniors, Beaconsfield and now Carlton AFLW youngster Georgia Gee is certainly creating plenty of excitement. The 18-year-old winger, taken with the Blues’ pick 12 in the AFLW draft, has been a junior star since coming to the Eagles as a shy kid, and has also been involved in the Dandenong Stingrays and Victorian rep programs. In the Round 1 clash against Collingwood, Gee made her debut in an eight-point victory in front of a monster crowd at Ikon Park, amassing five disposals and showing immense promise. She explained just what it meant to play AFL football for the first time, and her emotions before the game. “It was a massive privilege to pull the jersey on; before the game, I felt calm and collected, but I had a few nerves with such a big crowd watching, and it being my debut,” she said. “But it was very exciting; I was very, very humbled to be out there, and if I could re-live that experience all over again, I would.” Gee explained that her arrival into the big league has been a bit of an eye opener so far, but loves every minute of it as she builds towards something special with her teammates. “It’s been a massive step up from what I was doing last year; it’s been such an exciting experience so far, playing alongside Darcy Vescio, Tayla Harris and other girls, they’ve been great role models and I can’t get enough of it,” she explained. “It’s been pretty big (the step up) compared to the Stingrays; having the facilities Carlton have has been massive. “The pace is also such a big up from youth girls and TAC level; because I’m small, the
Beaconsfield's Georgia Gee is loving her time at Carlton. physicality was a big thing for me too, but I felt I adapted to it quite quickly and I’m hoping to get some more experience in.” Drafted as a winger having electrified crowds with her speed and clean skills, Gee has been working at expanding her game in another area of the ground. “It’s been different playing as a small forward, I haven’t really been on the wing so far this season; it’s definitely been a different experience playing around Darcy and Tayla and
trying to get some score on the board,” she said. “Obviously, it’s good using my speed and working around those guys; I’m looking forward to getting on the wing at some stage in my footy. “But getting another position under my belt is important, and they want me to be able to rotate between midfield and forward, so that’s probably the main thing and goal for this season.”

By Hayley Wildes The 2018 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championships are headed to Phillip Island this weekend. With the best of the best, including three-time defending World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea, headed to the Island, it promises to be a weekend full of high octane racing. Rea, who will be looking to take home the Phillip Island crown for the sixth time in the last seven races at the venue, acknowledged the new technical rules will play a role in evening out the field, but is looking to continue his domination of the sport. “The new regulations have tried to balance the field, which is a huge challenge for all the manufacturers,” said Rea, who hails from Northern Ireland but spends his off-season in Phillip Island. “Like always though, after three or four races most of the riders and teams will find their place in the championship - and I can’t see it being too dissimilar to last year as regards to who’s at the front and winning races.” Those new rules include his Kawasaki ZX-10RR being restricted to a rev limit of 14,100rpm - a 1,000rpm reduction from the 2017 season. Furthermore, if Rea’s reign of supremacy continues, he could be further handicapped in the form of 250rpm handicaps as the season progresses. “I don’t see it being a disadvantage at many tracks, because there are not a lot of places where we are in sixth gear the whole time. When we are, we might suffer a little bit.” Rea said. After an intense 2017 season that saw Rea become the first rider to win three titles in a row in the production-based series, he is now refreshed and ready to battle for a fourth consecutive title. “Everything is in place to win again, but there’s also a part of me that worries that one day I am not going to be that guy,” said Rea. “I can’t continue this forever, but I feel like barring any silly mistakes, and I remain healthy, we should be able to fight for the title until the very end.” With testing taking place this week at Phil-

By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 10 (DAY TWO) Berwick’s season is over, and Hallam’s is only really beginning. That was the consequence of the Bears’ hard fought loss to the Hawks on Saturday, as the Turf 1 top four is finally set in stone with just one round left to play. While there were always going to be fleeting moments of momentum with the ball, the Bears simply didn’t make enough runs on day one, and all the Hawks had to do was grind it out, and capitalize anytime the visitors strayed off a length. Resuming play at 0/13, the Hawks’ most experienced opening duo Ben Hillard (37) and Leigh Booth (38) were tested; as expected; but rode the tough wave early to set the home side on the right path. Both rock solid in defense, eventually Jarrod Goodes (2/47) found the spark, removing both Booth and the dangerous Jagveer Hayer in consecutive balls, both with excellent deliveries. It brought the Hawks to 2/61, and with a sniff of restricting them under their first innings total of 163. As he has for most of the season, Jordan Hammond (16) looked fluent, and combined with Hillard, managed to steady the ship before James Wilcock (3/56) entered the fray. In a tense spell, that had its moments of fierceness, Wilcock prized out Hammond, Kevin Kean (1) and eventually Hillard; trapped LBW; and suddenly the Hawks were falling apart with the score 5/95. But a steely resolve; one that will see the Hawks now enter finals as a genuine threat; saw Ryan Hillard (22 not out) rearguard the chase, and combined with Vishal Thind (36 not out), put on 47 ice cool runs to steer the home side to a result that has now shaped the season.

Casey-South Melbourne endured a tough day at the office against Monash Tigers on Saturday, with the Swans already conceding first innings points at Casey Fields. After an encouraging display by the Swans at Schramms Reserve against Fitzroy Doncaster last round, the developing team struggled against the Tigers after winning the toss and electing to bat. Quality Bushranger all-rounder Daniel Christian (2/26) got the ball rolling for the Tigers with the early wicket of Devin Pollock, and despite some fight by Michael Wallace (51 off 164 balls); who is enjoying a fantastic season for the club; the Swans once again lost clumps of wickets in quick succession. A wag at the end by Brendan Rose (18) once again saw the Swans lift their total above 100, with the home side scratching their way to 136. Dylan Hadfield (24) also dug in for the Swans, but collectively, the top six made just 88 runs between them as the Tigers dominated. Bowling with babies and great for greens By Nick Creely Bowls Victoria; in conjunction with VicHealth; have a launched a new project this bowling season - Mums on the Green. The project’s first program that under umbrella will be ‘Bowling with Babies’, hosted by the Narre Warren Bowls Club every Thursday in March from 10am. Women’s sport in Victoria received a boost last October, with VicHealth announcing $6.7 million in funding to 19 sporting organisations including Bowls Victoria in an effort to get more women and girls healthy and active over the course of the next three years. The program is designed to provide a safe and comfortable environment for new and expecting mums to get out of the house, meet cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Narre Warren is the latest club to get involved, with their program to launch on Thursday 1 March, after other clubs around Victoria implemented the program to immediate success, with nearly 100 mums and babies taking part across three weeks. Program manager Neil Gray is excited about what the program can bring to new mums, and said it is starting take off around Victoria. “We want to get mums out of the house, and into a low intensity sport; it is also a great opportunity for some emotional and physical support,” he said. “It’s a very laid back environment, and we just want to keep expanding.”
“We originally wanted eight programs by June, but we’ve now got 12, so it’s been extremely successful.” And Gray said that Narre Warren jumping on board opens up a whole new market for the south-east area and bowling clubs in general. “Narre Warren is the first in that area to get involved and it’s really exciting; it’s right next to the shops so it’s really ideal,” he said. “The club approached us, and have been really supportive of the program. “It’s also a massive benefit for clubs and opens a whole new market; clubs are basically empty throughout the day, and it’s a great opportunity for them to expand.” Any club that wants to host a program, can contact neilg@bowlsvic.org.au

Cranbourne on fire CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne has continued to ride a wave of success with all four sides once again recording wins on the weekend. After Saturday's game, Cranbourne chief Chris Griffiths praised the performances of the club's bowlers, adding: "The club is on a real high with all four Saturday teams winning again today and they all have a real chance of playing in the finals. "We are also pleased that the ladies team remains on top of the ladder with another great win and one of our midweek teams is also set to play in finals. This is the best result for our club in more than five years." Last time the Division 2 side met Cranbourne RSL they were outplayed, but playing at home this time it was sweet victory to the home side with all rinks getting up and winning by 38 shots and all 18 points going to Cranbourne. Skip Frank Byrne and his team of Gavin Wright, Garry Hunt, and Doug Boggie picked up an eight on one end which certainly helped them to record a nine-shot win. Skip John McKenna and his team was losing at the midway mark but fought back well to eventually win by 15 shots. Skip Neil Drummond got up by six shots and Skip Barry Thomas won by eight shots. Cranbourne 92 defeated Cranbourne RSL 54. A 37-shot win against Glen Waverley for the Ladies Division 1 outfit was another great result with all sides getting up to record victories. Skip Freda Farrall and her team of Maree Taylor, Joyce Pearce and Kath Dudink won by an impressive 18 shots. Skip Sue Hudson won by nine shots and Skip Joy McLisky won by 10 shots. Three of the Cranbourne ladies have been chosen to play for the district team and they include Lynne Wood, Sue Hudson and Isobel Partington. Cranbourne 78 defeated Glen Waverley 41. Division 3 Skip Gerry Dudink and his rink of Vic Butera, Nick Arnold and Roger Roscoe were simply magnificent, winning by 25 shots which was enough to record a 10-shot win against a very strong Oakleigh side playing away. A very modest Dudink said after the game "well yes, I had a pretty good game but my team mates were outstanding." Cranbourne 88 defeated Oakleigh 78. The Division 5 outfit was struggling at the start of the year, losing the first three games and struggling for most of the year but this has all turned around now. On Saturday at home against Berwick all rinks got up and they recorded a 54-shot win which was outstanding. Skip Gary Farrington and his crew of Bill Sherriff, Cheryl Wright and Harry Van Soest were at their best, winning by 18 shots. Skip John Kent - supported by Sofio Raiti, Mardy Tankard and Rob Dickson - also did very well, winning by an impressive 18 shots. Skip Brian Caddell won by four shots and skip Brian Grant and his rink of Barry Graham, David Brown and Ron Shields won by 17 shots. Cranbourne 106 defeated Cockatoo 52. Division 8 Skip Rob Sorensen and his rink of Derek Maguire and Frank Coulter were at their best against Pakenham, winning by 16 shots while Skip John Forsythe had a tough match but Scott De Piazza put in some very handy bowls to save the day. Cranbourne 36 defeated Pakenham 31.

As good as it gets for the Parkers HAMPTON PARK BOWLS MIDWEEK PENNANT It was as good as it can get over the past week for the Parkers, with all three sides recording wins. The Division 2 side enjoyed a commanding in over Berwick, 16-68 to 0-41. Geoff Ladner, Stuart Tokley, Ellen Smith and skip Christine Hendrie got up on the last end when Christine played weight, removing two opposition bowls to get the winning shot (1716). Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton, Helen Lambert and skip Denise Eastick won by 13 shots (27-14), as did Lou Soligo, Ron Beverly, Andrew Brandolin and skip Neville Hendrie (24-11). The Division 1 six-a-side outfit had a bye. Narre’s finals hopes dealt a real blow NARRE WARREN BOWLS Narre Warren's Midweek Division 2 finals hopes received a blow on Tuesday last week with a disappointing loss against another finals hopeful at Edithvale. Although making the finals is still mathematically possible for Narre, it will require the team to win all their remaining games while still relying on other teams to lose. Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, Keith Mark and Rod Lane's was the closest rink, going down 21-14, while Pauline Kempf, Wally Finlayson, Geoff Ampt and Jim Millar lost 24-15 and Arthur Fitt, Alan Mark, Eric Sydenham and Wilma Stevenson went down 34-10. Narre Warren (1) 0-39 lost to Edithvale (3) 16-89. Division 3 travelled to Berwick and also suffered a loss. Helen McCarthy, Nancy Pugh, Truus Henneman and Andy Tobler almost scored a rink win with a late charge, but drew 19-19. Runner-up was the local Narre Warren team of Keith Mark, Graham Dodd and Jos van Hout. Saturday was another disappointing day for three of the four pennant teams. Division 2 was at Fountain Gate against near neighbours Hampton Park. Exotic heart and soul By Derek Ogden When you’re on to a good thing . . . no need to tell Mazda that, the company, line with its Kodo - soul of motion - philosophy in which colour is a prime element of form, has splashed out on a new exotic exterior colour for its popular Mazda3. This follows the success of Soul Red Crystal in the top-selling CX-5 SUV. Since its debut, the colour has proven a fast favourite with customers, with around 22 per cent of CX-5s sold being in colour. Unfortunately, our test vehicle, a Mazda3 Maxx hatchback, was blue, so lacked some of the ‘soul’ imparted by the new hue. Not to worry. The mid-range model at $24,890, plus on-road costs, had much to offer. The Mazda3 range covers six models, all in hatchback and sedan, with two petrol engines, plus six-speed manual or automatic transmission. In a congested car market it takes more than keen pricing to climb above the crowd. Nobody knows this better than Mazda, so ignoring the above, the design of the latest Mazda3 is hardly soulless. A new front grille adds a touch of aggression. Mazda tells us the lower positioning of the Mazda badge and number plate holder hint at a lower centre of gravity. So there. There’s a newly-designed rear bumper stands for stability. Quite rightly, the driver remains the main focus of the cabin, although other occupants are not treated as second-class passengers. Meters have been simplified, a new steering wheel added and USB inputs have been moved to the centre console. The hatchback can take 308 litres in the rear cargo area, while the sedan’s boot capacity comes in at 408 litres.

A new hue is the icing on the cake for the best-selling Mazda. Mazda3 Maxx incorporates MZD Connect which puts cabin occupants in touch with the internet and provides access to social networking services. Control is via a 7-inch full colour touchscreen on the central dashboard and multifunction command controller, a knob on the centre console surrounded by related function switches. It offers Bluetooth hands-free phone operation, reception of short text messages, and internet radio such as Aha with access more than 100,000 broadcasts from around the world, even including the likes of BBC and CNN. Also featured are DAB+ digital radio, Radio Data System program information and satellite navigation. The screen also displays the reversing camera signal. The 2.0-litre petrol engine with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque is available on Neo, Maxx and Touring grades. The more
powerful 2.5-litre petrol engine, with 138 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, comes standard on SP25, GT and Astina variants. The 2.2-litre-D diesel no longer appears in the picture as sales were minimal. New safety technology; including smart city brake support-forward is now standard across the range, while Mazda3 Maxx and all grades above get SCBS-Reverse, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. Maximum power of 114 kW from the 2.0-litre motor turns up late in the rev range, at 6000 rpm, so the Mazda3 Maxx is in no hurry to get off the mark. In fact, with the pedals symmetrically placed to the left and right of the driver’s centre line, and a hinged organtype accelerator, driving is altogether an unhurried rather relaxed experience. The drive can be spiced up by means of the Skyactiv-Drive transmission, which enables the driver to move into Sport mode using the switch on the shift gate. This alters the engine
characteristics, shift timing and shift speed to provide stronger acceleration at the touch of the pedal. Well positioned A-pillars and side mirrors mounted on the doors give good visibility for the driver. Occupants also experience a quieter drive thanks to better noise, vibration and harshness measures. The new Mazda3 also offers improved handling and ride comfort, thanks to G-Vectoring Control that improves chassis balance by adjusting engine torque in response to steering inputs in a unified manner and optimise the vertical loading of each tyre to give smooth and efficient vehicle behaviour - plus electric power assist steering, damper and suspension enhancements.
