FEARS FOR LANDFILL JOBS

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Employees at Eumundi Landfill reusable goods recycling and sales facility fear they will lose their jobs after Noosa Councillors voted on Monday to switch contractors from Brite Side Industries to NSW-based Resource Recovery Australia (RRA).

For 19 years the Noosa Community Training Centre (NCTC) has provided training for thousands of locals and, trading as Brite Side, has operated the Reusable Goods Recycling and Sales Facility at the Resource Recovery Centre, using it as both an income stream and a training facility.

NCTC spokeswoman Glenda Lane is holding out hope that the decision Noosa Councillors make at this evening's Ordinary meeting will be to reverse Monday's vote and issue them a licence to continue running the facility.

Council called for tenders from not for profit organisations to operate the Reusable Goods Recycling and Sales Facility after a meeting last April determined the need for better outcomes.

Council said its aim was to improve the current recycling activities at the Eumundi Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre in line with contemporary waste and recycling management practices. Only two tenders were received.

Council officers recommended council award the tender to RRA after it rated more highly in its evaluation. Environment Health manager Wayne Schafer said RRA had included more initiatives in its tender.

Cr Frank Pardon argued in favour of Brite Side being given the chance to improve its operations with new council-proposed facilities which include the construction of on-site buildings and the sealing of a dirt storage area.

He said Brite Side had done a pretty good job and built social capital through its years of work and training and he was concerned at its ability to continue funding training

"Value for money for ratepayers has been terrific with the incumbent," he said.

Cr Joe Jurisevic questioned whether RRA practices in NSW where they have waste levies would be as effective in Queensland where they were untested.

However, the vote went in favour of council's recommendations.

Outside the meeting Ms Lane said some of the issues on which the decision was made were incorrect.

She said Brite Side had put forward numerous initiatives over the years and called for improved facilities but they had been rejected by council.

NCTC supervisors Col Rodwell and Greg Shallis who sat in Monday's council meeting were "absolutely shattered" to hear

their jobs would be taken by RRA when Mr Schafer told the meeting RRA would want to employ its own supervisors.

"We'll have to move on," they said.

One employee who didn't want to be named said there were 13 staff all over 50-years-of-age working on site.

"Everybody's been here 13-14 years. We don't know what we're going to do next."

"They have said we can apply for our jobs if we fit the criteria, whatever that means."

The worker said all employees had found jobs on site after training with NCTC which continues to train teenagers and over-45 year olds with a 75 per cent employment rate.

Noosa Councillors will make their decision on the selection at its Ordinary meeting this evening. ●

HEAVY FINE FOR TREE REMOVAL BY OWNER The illegal removal of five mature trees has cost a Noosa Heads property owner and a local contractor more than $20,000 in fines.

Noosa Council says the hefty prosecution on an Allambi Rise property owner serves as a warning to anyone considering removing trees without permission to expect a similar penalty.

In addition to the fines, council has

ordered the cleared are be replanted with mature replacement trees.

"Council won't hesitate to take legal action to protect trees and other vegetation, which contribute significantly to the unique character and biodiversity of the shire," Development Assessment manager Kerri Coyle said.

"On this occasion the removal of five

large eucalypts at the rear of the Allambi Rise property has created a break in the green backdrop of Noosa Hill, which the Noosa Plan seeks to preserve.

"The trees were also helping to stabilise sloping land, which is subject to slippage."

Ms Coyle said landowners should check with Council on 5329 6500 before removing trees. ●

UTELOAD OF STOCK IS TRASHED

BY MARGARET MACCOLL A whole ute-full of Queensland Government Travelsmart backpacks were dumped at the Eumundi Road Landfill facility on Thursday evening to the disgust of workers and residents.

Staff said they rescued several large cartons of the new backpacks, still in their new plastic wrappings, from the cardboard recycling section when they realised what they were and sent them to the recycling shop.

One employee said the store had given a boxful to a customer who was travelling to Fiji and planned to distribute them amongst schoolchildren.

"They'll love them," he told them.

Another customer who alerted staff to more backpacks in another section of the tip said he had just paid more than $20 in a commercial store for a similar quality backpack.

"The staff were as horrified as me at the incredible waste," he said.

DIGGERS DO IT FOR TURTLES

T

hey hit the beaches at dawn and dusk and are regularly seen digging in the sand but this activity has nothing to do with fun in the sun and all to do with giving our endangered turtles the best chance at life.

The Coolum and North Shore Coast Care northern beaches volunteers are a small and dedicated group of about 12 volunteers who are trained to record data on turtles whether stranded or nesting and to protect and monitor nests.

Group president Leigh Warneminde became aware of turtles nesting at the northern end of the coast and initiated the group 11 turtle seasons ago to look after turtles from Mooloolaba to Noosa. There were only five turtle nests then. “It was deemed insignificant,” she said.

Each year the volunteers travel to Mon Repos near Bundaberg for training and accreditation in order to perform their duties and collect data that is logged with Queensland Turtle Research for use by scientists and researchers.

Mon Repos supports about 50 per cent of the endangered loggerhead turtle nesting in the southern ocean. This year they expect more than 1300 nests or clutches of eggs will hatch.

So far this season that stretches from November to March there have been 47 nests, a steep increase from the 27 nests of eggs laid last year, with a large cohort in the Peregian, Marcus, Sunrise and Sunshine beaches.

Often the first the local turtle group knows about the existence of a nest is when they get a call from one of an army of beach walkers who alert the volunteers to tracks

that females make as they haul themselves up to the dunes during the evening to lay their eggs and back to the ocean.

The team organise themselves by location with the nearest travelling to the location to record the site with a GPS reading, map out the nest, protect the area with mesh and take sand temperature readings.

Leigh said our white sand beaches don’t retain the heat in the same way as the more orange sand at Mon Repos.

The nest temperature hovers about 27.8-28 degrees Celsius and has an effect on determining the sex of the turtle which sets our turtles apart from those in the north. While at Mon Repos the majority of turtles hatching are females our turtles are mostly male.

The latest clutch of hatchings is about to “run” as they call it when the young hatchlings make their way to the ocean.

“We don’t need to be there when they hatch. They manage to do that all by themselves,” she said.

However members of the group are particularly concerned about this clutch and have been taking it in shifts checking through the night to ensure the turtles safe passage to the sea.

The group knows they’re not the only ones checking that particular nest as a fox has also been eyeing it regularly, for other reasons.

It takes 60-90 days from the time the eggs are laid to hatching.

The baby turtles can sit under the sand for up to five days after they hatch. They have a yoke under their tummies they absorb to give them the energy for their run to the sea, Leigh said.

“The hatchlings go toward the brightest light on the horizon,” she said.

Sometimes humans get in the way of the turtles natural journey. The group’s research shows turtles will only lay their eggs on safe, dark beaches.

In one instance a turtle laid her eggs at Stumers Creek, Coolum Beach, in a perfect location on a darkened beach. That was before soccer season began.

Leigh said the babies hatched when the floodlights were shining on soccer practise and all the hatchlings made their dash up Stumers Creek toward the light.

The volunteers were working for hours to find them. They ended up picking them up in buckets to take them back to the sea, she said.

The hatchlings come out fairly quickly.

It can be just five minutes it takes to make their dash but sometimes there are stragglers.

Once the turtles leave the nest the volunteers dig it up to record the numbers of eggs, those that have hatched and the tracks left by the hatchlings. As the weather cools, the success rate of hatchlings diminishes.

Leigh said people wanting to watch the hatchlings should go to Mon Repos where there is a better chance of seeing them and

the ecotourism program set up is helping conserve the turtles through the funds it brings in and the education delivered to tourists.

Leigh said there was still so little known about the turtles and much more research to do.

“To do research on marine turtles it takes decades,” she said. “They can breed for 40-50 years.”

Some local turtles have been tagged recently in an effort to better understand their travels. They know only one in about 1000 reaches maturity. The hatchlings from our shores travel to South America where they stay for about 20 years before making their way back when they are about 30 years of age to lay their eggs.

Leigh said the fact turtles are endangered serves as an indicator the environment is in serious condition.

“I feel like they are the canary in the cage,” she said.

“They are such prehistoric creatures.

They’ve survived for thousands of years and

they’re very adaptable. It’s a wake-up call for me - if we can’t manage to sort them out we’re in trouble.”

In their efforts to improve the environment the coast care group does much more than work with turtles. With a total group of about 200 they conduct marine debris surveys, bush regeneration projects and provide community education.

Over the past six years they have planted more than 45,500 plants in the dunal system. They monitor and install nesting boxes for wildlife, conduct marine research on shells, fauna and geological formations and have produced conservation brochures.

They have lobbied against development on coastal dunal ecosystems and through their weekly working bees estimate they contribute about 200 volunteers hours a week to the community. In 2008 Leigh was presented with a Froggy Award in recognition of 10 years of biodiversity preservation.

When Bridget Muir of Cooroy changed her hair colour from blonde to brunette she didn't expect the social changes that followed. She explains what happened: As humans we judge people based on their appearance, especially their hair colour.

Having been a blonde for the vast majority of my life, it is incredibly intriguing to see how different social interactions are now with much darker hues in my hair.

People are attracted to sparkly and shiny things. Blondes are a genetic rarity and their golden locks cannot be missed. Blondes never go unnoticed as they enter a room. I am enjoying the invisibility that comes with "blending in" and being like everyone else.

Being blonde comes with a certain stigma. Many view you as "easy" and incredibly fake and stupid. Men would often tell me that they had a thing for blondes. It is strange that attraction can be so superficial and simplistic (although, I am guilty of this too. I do like a man with nicely shaped "guns"). Perhaps we are wired to like certain physical attributes in a potential partner based on our genetic makeup and this might be why some men actually do prefer blondes?

I feel I am granted much more credibility and my opinions are listened to as a brunette. I cannot begin to describe how frustrating it is to be laughed off or to have ideas dismissed and subsequently silenced.

my own makeup the biggest challenge.

As a blonde, I always felt overdone. Red lipstick always looked far too try-hard. Bold eyeshadow was out of place. As a brunette, you can't really go overboard. Darker locks complement bright shadows and red lips. I

am finding different coloured clothes work better with the darker hair too.

Who would have thought that a change in hair colour would lead to wardrobe and makeup modifications as well as being such a fascinating social experiment? ●

Police have charged two boys with armed robbery following an incident at Ebbw Vale on 10 February.

Police allege about 1.55pm, the two boys entered a service station on Brisbane Road and demanded cigarettes from a male staff member.

When the staff member refused, it is further alleged one of the boys threatened the staff member with a knife demanding cigarettes and cash.

The two boys fled the scene on foot.

Responding police located two boys nearby in possession of the alleged stolen property.

No one was injured during the incident.

A 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy both from Goodna have been charged with one count each of robbery with violence in company whilst armed.

The 2017/18 Christmas Free Holiday Buses between 26 December 2017 and 5 January 2018 cost $65,664 (excluding GST) and resulted in an increase in passengers using the service. There was an estimated 45,725 passengers carried over the 11 day period with each paying about $1.44. The services included six bus services, Council Cabs and the Boreen Point Tewantin Flexilink service. Noosa council attributed a reduction in car numbers for paid parking to the doubling of charges for the Noosa Heads Lions Park for 13 days (26 December - 7 January 2018). Despite the increase 3500 vehicles used the car park, which generated $70,000 with $25,455 of the parking revenue going to the TewantinNoosa Heads Lions Club. ●

Two women have a dream to keep alive a Noosa Junction book shop that is closing down after almost 30 years in the same location.

Claire Dargan and Catherine Fisk both work at the Written Dimension Book Shop and ABC Centre and believe there is still a place for a book shop in Noosa Junction.

"Noosa people have a passion for books," Claire said.

"I think the Junction can absolutely support a book shop."

For current owner Keith Moore who has run the business for the past nine years it will be the end of what he described as "an indulgence".

The businessman said with e-books, online shopping and online streaming, sales of books, DVDs and CDs were on the decline.

"It's a sign of the times for book shops," he said.

Unable to secure a lower rental Keith will shut the business on 28 February, but wishes his employees success.

"They both really enjoy working with books," he said.

GROWING INTO THE CLIMATE

Woolworths Noosa will be among the first stores in Queensland to be single-use plastic bag free from 4 April.

The move follows the company’s commitment to stop offering single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags to customers nationally by 30 June. Nationally, this will see the removal of 3.2 billion lightweight plastic bags from circulation.

In the lead up to 4 April, Noosa residents will begin to notice prompts in-store on the changeover date. Customers will have the option to bring in their own bags or purchase a range of reusable bag options starting from 15 cents. They will also have the option to drop plastic bags off in the REDcycle bin when finished with them, which will be available in-store from mid March. ●

With input from the Noosa community, Council is seeking to develop a plan that maintains Noosa's financial, ecological and cultural assets, well into the future.

Grant said the project would involve identifying potential future hazards and assets exposed to hazards and engage the

community in placing a value on assets.

Through an asset prioritisation council would categorise assets using a set of criteria including the cost and ability of replacement, its social and cultural value, scarcity of the asset and length of design life.

Grant said the first draft of the adaptation plan should be released for public comment mid-year. ●

In 2016, Noosa Council commenced a twoyear project to develop a Climate Change Adaptation Plan with a goal to gain a better understanding of the area's climate-driven risks to its assets and how to prepare for them.

Last Friday Council's climate change adaptation plan program coordinator Grant Hinner discussed the progress of the plan at Noosa Parks Association's Friday Environment Forum.

Grant said although the consequences of climate change seemed to be in the future the plan aimed to identify the risks and be pro-active to meet the needs of the communities and take advantages of opportunities including funding that might arise to implement mitigation actions. He said climate change adaptation would be included in all council planning schemes.

The state government last year released a climate adaptation strategy and would this year ramp up funding for adaptation on a sector by sector basis, he said. While keeping in line with state actions the council has statutory obligations to take into account natural hazards such as erosion, storm tides and determine risk assessments that are science-based.

BE WARY OF SCAM CALLS FROM FAKE TELSTRA EMPLOYEES

Carramar Aged Care Centre hosted Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt and Wide Bay MP Llew O'Brien on Friday to discuss its plans for extension, staffing, funding, its inclusive approach to living with dementia and the future of aged care.

Mr Wyatt said with the area's high proportion of seniors at 23 per cent compared to the national average of 15 per cent Noosa was ideally located to reshape the view of ageing and aged care.

"It's vital we change our overall mindset on ageing," Minister Wyatt said. "Seniors are now making great contributions to families, communities and commerce well into their 70s, 80s and, increasingly, to 100 and beyond.

"Safe, quality care is paramount but this is also about jobs of the future, with aged care already one of the nation's fastest growing employment sectors."

These criminals are very convincing, they will request you download a remote access software program like “Team Viewer” onto your computer. Once they obtain access to your computer, they will deposit money into your account and request you purchase iTunes cards or ask you to transfer the money to them using a wire transfer facility such as Money Gram or Western Union.

Unfortunately due to the remote access they now have, the money which appears they are transferring into your account is actually your own money which they have moved from one of your own accounts. Once you have transferred the money or given over the iTunes reference numbers, your money is gone with little to no chance of recovering it.

There are never any circumstances where a legitimate business or government department will ask for payment using an iTunes gift card or for your help to catch hackers. Quite simply, it is a scam. ●

BY RON LANE There can be nothing more encouraging at the start of football season, be it Union, Soccer League or A .F.L.then to stand at the boundary fence and gaze out upon a beautiful, well-kept and green playing field.

The remarks are always the same, "this looks great, couldn't be better, someone has done a great job." This can only be achieved after many long hours of hard dedicated work; and sometimes during our hottest of days.

Such were the remarks that were banded around the Noosa Dolphins Rugby playing field on Friday afternoon, when hundreds of mums, dads supporters and sponsors

gathered for the junior sign on and the socializing that always followers.

Good playing field less injuries, great setting for the season ahead.

However by Monday morning all had changed. Somebody, that is best described in the words of Club President Donald McKill, "as nothing but a low life" had driven a vehicle on to the playing field and in their moments of glory had performing doughnuts tearing up a field that had cost in the vicinity of $10,000 (done every two years) to completely relay and grass for the season ahead.

What does this act of sheer stupidity prove apart from the fact that the driver is definitely not the type of person we want

in our community. A large section of the ground now has to be relayed; top dressing fertilised and irrigated. Hopefully with a lot of loving care it will be restored to its former glory.

Apart from the dangers of uneven surface there is the time and effort required by a group of dedicated people to make the replacement a success; and let as remember that our players will be on the paddock on 24 February.

All groundsmen are invited to be alert to this lowlife, as this may not be a one of but the start of senseless vandalism of the lowest order; but as the president said, "We will definitely be ready for the season ahead." ●

The Noosa International Film Festival has opened entries for its 2018 short film competition.

The festival is calling for filmmakers from Australia and overseas to submit and welcomes films of any genre.

Last year the festival attracted over 180 short films from 31 countries.

"We accept films of any genre and welcome stories that excite, delight, inspire or make you think," Festival curator HollyPittman said.

The Noosa International Film Festival is open to filmmakers over the age of 18 and films will be judged across 10 prize categories.

"We screen short films of all forms from drama, comedy, animated, documentary, or experimental. Whether it is light hearted or thought provoking, all stories have a place at NIFF." Selected films will be screened publicly during the four-day festival in October.

Short films entries are limited to 20 minutes in duration and are being accepted through Film Freeway.

WHERE ARE SHAREMARKETS HEADING IN 2018?

Morgans’ Senior Analyst Tom Sartor provides his insights The market remains locked in a ‘Goldilocks’ scenario, where improving global growth continues to buoy investor confidence, while low inflation sees central banks in no hurry to accelerate interest rate normalisation. Healthy growth puts the world in a better position to deal with the next downturn, but we are not ignorant of prevailing risks, and we caution investors to remain vigilant as these ideal conditions for equity markets are unlikely to continue through 2018. The return of volatility in early 2018 emphasises this point.

Weighing up the geopolitical risks A number of geopolitical risks could affect trade and market instability in 2018, including UK talks to leave the EU, political gridlock and instability in Washington, tensions over North Korea’s missile and nuclear program and increased trade protectionism. While we don’t see a need for investors to be alarmed at this stage, investors should be prepared for at least some potential for an escalation of these risks. Leaving some cash on the sidelines is prudent at a time where significant risks stand on the doorstep.

A turning point for interest rates In 2013 the mere hint that the US Federal Reserve would end its unprecedented emergency measures caused investors to throw a ‘taper tantrum’, devastating Emerging Markets. Markets are currently pricing in a slower pace of interest rate rises and taking each increase in its stride. But this could all change if inflation surprises off very low expectations. Unemployment rates around the globe have fallen, with the US now sitting at where many officials deem to be in full employ-

ment. Higher interest rates usually signal a bull market, so investors should be prepared for a return to more normal levels of market volatility.

Australian market – needing an earnings catalyst The Australian equity market’s underperformance against its global peers still accurately reflects an economy that has failed to break decisively out of its post-mining slump. Low growth and low interest rates have made investing for yield a profitable strategy for much of the post-GFC period. We are starting to see limits to this well-worn strategy.

ASX 200 Industrials ex-Financials earnings per share (EPS) growth is forecast by Thomson Reuters between 4% to 7% over the next three years, falling well short of the 11% average over the past 15 years. The market may continue to lag global peers until investors get a clearer read on a genuine acceleration in the business cycle.

What does this mean for investors?

After a strong finish to 2017 the theme for 2018 remains one of cautious optimism. While conditions in the global markets are improving, it is important to remain conscious of the significant risks that could derail this scenario. We think active stock selection will be key to returns in 2018.

BIOSPHERE QUESTIONS REMAIN This week a group of people calling themselves concerned citizens of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve and surrounds responded to the questions put last week to Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Chair Dick Barnes.

They say there were some significant gaps in the information he provided.

"Our purpose is not to further demonise NBRF, which is still struggling for public understanding in its fourth year, but to attempt to show it can be aligned better with the community that Mr Barnes is keen to see as supportive rather than indifferent or hostile," they said.

1.Who was on the committee that selected the grant recipients?

Lawyer Clare Cartwright is designated as the independent chair of the grants sub-committee but there is a perceived conflict of interest here. The Cartwright family and law firm have long standing connections with the Noosa Parks Association, which unfortunately sits at the heart of the controversy surrounding the NBRF. The NPA is a significant recipient of NBRF grants.

2.What were the criteria?

Mr Barnes did not answer this question, merely stating that "the criteria (for grants) were well published on our website". Pretty low energy communication. He also said that "the

overarching purpose" of this grants round was "prosperity from protection" which, quite frankly, makes no sense.

3.Was the selection of the subcommittee final?

While it is said there was no

intervention in the grants subcommittee's decision, we need to look beyond this to whether high standards of transparency and accountability were evident in the process. After all, this was an undemocratically appointed

4.What did the NRBF do to ensure there were no conflicts of interest in making the selection?

At the first NBRF grants round, concerns about conflicts of interest were raised by one of our signatories, the then NBRF Executive Officer and Company Secretary, who was told not to be concerned as directors were well trained and able to avoid possible problems. Despite this, substantial funds have been - and are being allocated to organisations associated intimately with directors, including the chair. Simply stepping out of the room when a decision is formalised does not much remove a perception of conflict of interest.

5. Can you explain NBRF's finances?

We were told, when the original Noosa Biosphere Ltd (NBL) was dismantled with the onset of the newly de-amalgamated Playford Council, that the NBRF was established in its place to achieve a number of goals including to be separate from Council and to raise its own funds. It has to date consumed a large amount of money, how much exactly has not been shared with ratepayers but estimates are of up to $3 million. This is preponderantly provided by Council, from which the NBRF is legally separate but in reality totally dependent. In addition, much of this money has been spent outside the Biosphere Reserve, it has left the Shire. And we do not know how much 'free' support has been provided by Council staff at the expense of time spent on substantive Council projects.

6. How were NBRF's projects Bring Back the Fish, Keep it in Kin Kin, and Koala Mapping selected?

The merits of these projects are not the problem. The problem is one of power and agenda setting. Would a more democratically chosen Board free of perceptions of conflict have identified even more critical projects to fund? We do not know.

7. The NBRF has been described as a closed shop?

Mr Barnes failed to address this central question relating to the make-up of the NBRF - essentially an undemocratic body retaining total power of self-selection: hence "closed shop". Despite its recently established 'Big Idea' grants (which, paradoxically, are not the biggest grants, these are still to be announced), the NBRF has not supported wide collaboration within the Shire nor engaged with the many local organisations that would want to partner and participate in a Biosphere program. The more democratic NCBA - separated from NBRF but reliant on it for authority and funding - was clearly set up to remove community engagement from an NBRF established to be a "closed shop"and to keep the community at arms length. This has proved to be such a large problem that the NBRF is now feeling a strong need to communicate more effectively.

8. Is NBRF considering consulting the community on what they want from NBRF? Mr Barnes said 'yes' to consultation, admitting that, even after four years, there is limited community understanding of the Biosphere concept. The NBRF has failed to galvanise people, it has become an unstable and fragile organisation and it has served only to further divide a community which is in desperate need

of greater collaboration and unity and the synergies which flow from this.

9. How are you dealing with the community resentment of the Noosa Biosphere?

Mr Barnes states that the NBRF under his leadership has "an independence from the past". But it is tied to a Constitution which anchors it in the past because it ensures the NBRF can never open itself fully to the community. Noosa does not want an elite organisation that determines what is best for the rest of us; it wants a participatory organisation of democratic mood and structure which will bring us together not divide us. Part of this will involve addressing past conflict and hurt and instituting transparent and accountable governance.

10. Projects appear to have been very focused on the environment.

Does NBRF think the focus reflects the aims of a Biosphere?

Mr Barnes applies the word 'economy' liberally to existing projects but the economy - an essential part of a Biosphere - has so far gone missing in the NBRF's considerations.

The Biosphere concept was always intended by UNESCO to be constituted with a triple bottom line vision of community, environment and economy.

11. What does it propose for its strategic direction?

After four years, NBRF still has no vision, no clear objectives, no strategy and no key performance indicators. It has also resisted independent, external review - saying it has the skills to assess itself. In itself, those matters speak loudly of an organisation that is under-performing and is unwilling to

accept objective scrutiny.

12. What does the Biosphere want to achieve in its next 10 years?

The vision and strategy - when prepared and published - will tell us the answer to this question. Meanwhile NBRF states on its website that it is 'planning for achieving World Heritage listing by 2032'. What does that mean? What does it imply? Is this what the community wants? Would it not be prudent to have this conversation with the community first?

We end with a paragraph which Keith Jackson wrote in a letter to Noosa Today nearly a year ago: "If NBRF cannot establish an effective organisation which is understood, accepted and admired as an important community asset, and which is able to unify people and environment in the interests of building a better Shire, then it would seem to have no valid reason to exist."

LETTERS FRIGHTENING DRIVE IN LABOUR The thought of going into labour and having such a long drive to a maternity ward is frightening.

Not to mention someone like myself who has quick labours.

Sitting in a hospital (just to have a medical team on hand) while in the early stages of labour because you live a 45-minute drive away is so far from natural. Why on Earth is this even expected of a labouring woman who lives in Noosa?

Throw in a couple of everyday scenarios like peak hour traffic or a road accident to the mix, or if you have no car you can take public transport to the same hospital in one hour and 39 minutes just so you're there in time for when bubs arrives.

We are putting more pressure on our already clogged health system by having labouring women sitting in a bed when she could easily be at home.

We have the maternity wards still advising to stay home until you're well into your labour - this is not an option if you live in Noosa.

It is far too risky to stay at home while in labour as you may not make it to the hospital and that’s more strain on the amazing ambos of the coast who are already run off their feet too.

This is a simple fix for Noosa mums to be, just get us a maternity ward in Noosa Hospital.

SHORTCUT ADVICE As a past critic of the closure of the maternity department at Nambour Hospital and also the $10 million we were told was spent improving the emergency department at Caloundra Hospital to now see that it is only open in business hours. (Someone should inform accidents of the working hours).

So as an elderly but avid viewer of “One Born Every Minute" I can sympathise with any expectant mum not wanting to suffer any longer than is necessary and from what I have seen no two births are the same in duration.

(Even though I see every one as a miracle).

So may I assist by suggesting a trip I take.

I have driven again today (8 February) to the new University Hospital from Sunrise Beach entering the Sunshine Motorway at Peregian then exit it onto the Sunshine Motorway heading towards Sippy Downs at the Mountain Creek/Mooloolah River interchange.

I then take the left turn-off onto Kawana Way direct to the hospital - it takes me approximately 45 minutes both ways, not breaking any speed limits and missing the Nicklin Way peak hours traffic. Today was

Any delays on the Sunshine Motorway heading South from Peregian to Maroochydore can be avoided by using the Bruce Highway heading south and then exit at Tanawha using the Sunshine Motorway heading Eeast and then a right turn joining up with Kawana Way to the Hospital. But neither way would be really comfortable for an expectant mum.

Our ambulance drivers would be quicker but sometimes not always available (like yesterday) and it's not always for a birth. They can’t be there to take a mum for her checkups prior to birth.

All of our hospitals should have facilities for maternity services. After all is said and done it is for future Australians.

hill battle defending a situation that sees the elected Noosa Council handing over its responsibility for deciding on disbursement of ratepayer funds to a somewhat secretive, self-appointed and self-governing board.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX HITS The continuing surge in property prices on the Sunshine Coast, particularly the Noosa region, is great for home owners, and rental returns are also rewarding investors.

But a rental property is obviously subject to capital gains tax (CGT), which after 12 months' ownership is levied on half the net profit on its eventual sale.

The upsurge in Airbnb letting now raises an obvious question which I haven’t seen addressed; Is it short-term gain for long-term pain?

My understanding is that once a property becomes income producing it is classed as an investment property by the ATO and would therefore be subject to the same rules regarding CGT as properties which are permanent rentals.

This would apply proportionately if an owner was letting a room or an entire house

to temporary paying guests. I have no argument with that, or with moves by the Noosa Council to determine just how many Airbnb properties there are in our area.

Insurance companies would also apply a dearer premium if they knew a property was hosting paying guests, rather than being for private use, and it could open a whole can of worms with Centrelink if the owner is receiving a pension based on an asset/ income test.

So, do Airbnb or other holiday hosts who rent out homes during the lucrative peak periods, declare the income or do they pocket the cash in the hope they fly under the radar?

If most do the right thing, they could be in for a big shock when the home is sold and the taxman puts out his hand. A profit of say $500,000 on a reasonably upmarket home could see up to $250,000 added to the owner’s income and assessed accordingly by the ATO. If the profit runs into the millions, like some recent coast sales - Ouch!

MORE BIOSPHERE MURKINESS? With 2018 well underway we are waiting with bated breath for the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) to announce their 2017 grant decisions.

In 2016 the NBRF granted the Noosa Parks Association (NPA) project more than twice as much of our ratepayers' money than all other grant seekers together.

NPA lifetime member Noel Playford was a director on the NBRF board then. NPA president Michael Gloster is a director of the NBRF now. What steps has the Foundation taken this time around to convince us the NBRF can be trusted to make objective and fair decisions?

NBRF chair Dick Barnes said he was getting on with the job, free of “Noosa politics”.

We expect for this second grant announcement to come with a clear and simple breakdown of projects with funding amounts and the proponents’ name/organisation, so the community can make up their mind if this is the case.

REASON WANTED FOR DELAY As a person, who now approaching 85, I have been waiting for the Sundale development in Tewantin for some time. It will have the complete range of retirement and care, not available elsewhere.

My understanding is that is now being held up because one employee is not satisfied. That is not acceptable and should be determined by elected councillors. I understand the courts have already given instructions.

Please advise me why the hold-up?

Councillors are happy to write in the media that retirement homes are wanted, so why stop them. Perhaps the public should be advised why the delay.

GAMES A FIRST FOR SKIING ECUADORIAN When USC student Klaus Jungbluth competes in cross-country skiing at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, he will become the first athlete ever to represent his home country of Ecuador at the games.

In a story that could be likened to the 1990s comedy Cool Runnings, Jungbluth, 38, was an Olympic weightlifter but was forced to find a new sport after suffering a knee injury.

In 2012, the Ecuadorian - from the humid city of Guayaquil, which is just two degrees south of the equator - said he discovered he enjoyed using roller skis to train for cross-country skiing because it had low impact on his knees.

By July last year, in the middle of the 2018 Winter Olympic qualification period, Jungbluth arrived on the Sunshine Coast to start his PhD in Exercise Physiology at USC. "I've mostly been my own trainer since I started in 2012, but the PhD program has given me more knowledge and experience with the physiological and technical part of the sport," he said.

The USC student said it was an honour to be a flag bearer at the Winter Olympics, where he will be the sole athlete representing his country.

The father of four hopes to beat other athletes from Latin America who were

competing at the Winter Olympics.

"I am aware that I will be competing against people that have been doing this for their whole life," Jungbluth said.

"But for me the biggest goal has been already achieved, which is getting a spot at the Olympics." ●

A MUSICAL MUST The inaugural Pomona Music Muster will roll into town on 9,10 and 11 March as yet another fabulous fundraising initiative to save the Majestic Theatre.

TRANSPORT ON TOP OF TOURISM Transport was at the top of the agenda when Noosa Council and Tourism Noosa met on Tuesday to discuss Noosa's sustainable tourism.

Tourism Noosa's Board and CEO and Noosa Councillors and Council's CEO will be broadening the discussion by calling on input from business and community organisations and residents.

Tourism Noosa chairman, Steve McPharlin said a sustainable future for Noosa underpined their key goals, being to focus on value over volume by targeting high-yielding visitors, particularly from interstate and international markets, along with spreading

the benefits across our region.

"Tourism Noosa takes our environmental, social, cultural and economic responsibilities very seriously.

When working with our members to deliver actions to meet these responsibilities we also respect wider views from those not directly engaged in the tourism sector" he said.

"Noosa is very privileged to be home to iconic natural features like the Noosa National Park and Noosa Main Beach, which are here for all to share".

"We also recognise that visitors are one of the user groups that impact on local transport. We are therefore committed to

working with Noosa Council to help find solutions to ease Noosa's traffic congestion challenge."

"In a way, more money flowing into our local economy from tourists is a better problem to have than a shrinking local economy and lack of success," Mayor Tony Wellington said.

"I have attended a range of forums with other local governments lately, and the majority of them are desperately looking to increase visitor numbers, by any means possible. That's not our problem at the moment. We need to ensure that we continue to focus on value over volume, and

then successfully manage the outcomes."

"Tourism is an important part of our economy, and the benefits from its success flow on to residents across our Shire.

Internationally successful, Berlin-based Australian mezzo-soprano, Anna Smith, returns to the Sunshine Coast to perform her first hometown concert, "BERLIN AND BACK - Songs Of Love And Longing" on March 3 at the J, Noosa.

Anna, who will be in Australia next month to sing at the Brunswick Beethoven Festival in Melbourne, will reunite with acclaimed pianist, Stewart Kelly, to present songs from three of the greatest composers of the romantic era, Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. One of history's great love stories, the Schumann - Brahms relationship is one of passion, euphoria, tragedy and complexity. Growing up in a musical family, Anna attributes the fun and joy associated with her choral musical experience with Brisbane Birralee Voices and Australia's national children's choir, Gondwana Voices, as the drive behind her decision to study music.

After graduating from Good Shepherd Lutheran College and passing her Grade 8 singing exam with distinction, Anna was successful in her audition to study at the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University in Brisbane. This marked the beginning of the musical career she had set her heart on.

"I graduated with a Bachelor of Music Studies and moved to Berlin as I wanted to

become fluent in German," Anna said.

"I was inspired and captivated by this vibrant city and decided to stay and continue my music studies."

Anna earned a place in the Academy of the Rundfunkchor Berlin, the celebrated Berlin Radio Choir, and experienced working with world-renowned conductors and orchestras in famous venues. She completed a Master of Voice at the Universität der Künste (University of Arts), Berlin, specialising in German Lied, Oratorio and Concert Performance.

Her career highlights include singing with the Rundfunkchor in the staged production of St Matthew Passion, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of Berlin Philharmonie. She was also thrilled to be invited by conductor and Berlin Philharmonic violinist, Stanley Dodds, to sing Mozart's Exultate Jubilate

with the Sibelius Orchestra in the Berlin Konzerthaus.

Anna works successfully as a freelance singer in Germany, France, Belgium and The Netherlands. She is a founding member of the exciting sextet, GANZ A Cappella, which is made up of six singers from Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

She also loves working as a vocal coach with children's choirs in Berlin.

The romantic program of German song in Anna's Noosa concert on 3 March will showcase her beautiful voice as she leads the audience through the soaring emotions of this deeply personal repertoire.

MGMT kind of left the hipsters behind when they allowed the darker and more psychedelic elements of their work replace the instantly gratuitous pop melodies of tunes like Time To Pretend.

While the psychedelics took them to strange, freaked out proggy places many have yearned for the pop confection of their debut. Their latest drops the prog and takes more direct inspiration from all the various shades of '80s synth pop that reflected the gloom of Thatcher's Britain. In thinking about our current trials and tribulations, it is a nice point of comparison that provides the lads with an excuse to try on a little black eyeliner and embrace a goth shade of black. ●

Den of Thieves Starring: Gerard Butler

Den of Thieves is a slightly better than paint-by-the-numbers crime thriller currently hitting the multiplexes.

More than most, this film emphasises the cop/crim, two sides of the same coin argument.

Certainly, the cop crew headed by Gerard Butler look and act like bad guys, and seem to have more substance abuse problems than the crooks.

Their opponents are a crack ex-military bank-robbing crew who are making hay in LA, the bank robbery capital of the world, we’re told.

There are some worthy twists and turns in the plot, which raise it above the average crime flick. ●

IT'S THE REAL TASTE OF CHINA

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Chef James Wu is bringing his traditional Chinese customs to Sunshine Beach this year to celebrate Chinese New Year.

The Cantonese born chef of Embassy XO Restaurant will prepare a 10-course banquet of special New Year foods and has even contracted Lion dancers from Brisbane to perform.

James said his menu will include pork, duck and fish that are prominent dishes in Chinese culture at New Year.

"The star of the banquet is an array of food. There is always food on the table," he said.

He will also make sweets from his childhood including fried sesame dumplings and red bean soup.

James migrated to Australia with his family at the age of five and lived in Sydney

"In China the whole country shuts down for a week or fortnight," he said.

"At home the family gathers together and we have half a dozen dinners. It's the only time of the year we get together. Everyone talks about the year they had."

The drums and fireworks that accompany the Lion dancers will symbolically ward off the evil spirits and welcome in a prosperous New Year which in 2018 will be the Year of the Dog. The giving of money in red envelopes is also a tradition and brings with it good luck.

The Chinese New Year celebration begins on 15 February. The Chinese New Year banquet at Embassy XO Restaurant will be held on Friday 23 February.

SPICY BROCCOLI AND CHICKPEA PASTA

INGREDIENTS 350g wholegrain pasta or spelt pasta 350g broccoli, cut into small florets 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon rind, plus zest to serve 1/2 teaspoon dried red chilli flakes 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley, plus extra to garnish 2 teaspoons lemon juice 80g (1/3 cup) reduced-fat ricotta, to serve METHOD STEP 1 Cook the pasta in a large saucepan of lightly salted boiling water according to packet instructions or until al dente, adding broccoli for last 3 minutes cooking time. Drain, reserving 60ml (1/4 cup) of the pasta cooking liquid.

Return to pan.

STEP 2 Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Cook the onion, stirring occasionally, or 3-4 minutes or until softened. Add the garlic, lemon rind and chilli, cook for 1 minute or until

fragrant. Add the chickpeas, cook for 1 minute more.

STEP 3 Add the chickpea mixture to the drained pasta, with the reserved cooking liquid, parsley and the lemon juice. Season to taste, toss to combine.

Serve topped with the ricotta, extra parsley and lemon zest.

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Who could pass on spending Valentine's Day in Noosa with the Sweet Assassin himself, Adriano Zumbo?

Locale Noosa is hosting Adriano for a one time only Valentine's Day lunch inspired by the 7 Deadly Sins on Saturday, February 17, and the event is sure to be a gastronomic highlight.

Adriano is famous for his croquembouche and macaron tower, V8 cake, four years as a guest judge on the MasterChef series, and for his most recent series Zumbo's Just Desserts.

Adriano is also no stranger in Noosa though and is well known to Noosa locals for his Noosa Food & Wine events such as his delicious long table afternoon teas by the river, and on stage cooking demonstration in the village.

Locale Noosa owner Rio Capurso and head chef Andy Davies are looking forward to hosting the talented pastry chef for this enticing lunch.

"This lunch event is all about taking the romance of Valentine's Day to the weekend and indulging in seven unforgettable courses," Rio said.

"Our head chef Andy Davies has created an impressive menu with Adriano, with each of the seven courses representing one of the seven deadly sins."

"It's been fun to touch on the dark side of food when creating these dishes, while still keeping our focus on using local produce

During the 27 year olds amateur and professional career, she had the pleasure to represent her golf clubs, Emerald Lakes, Lakelands, RACV Royal Pines Resort and Links Hope Island, district (Gold Coast), and state (QLD). She was in the QLD State Training Squad for 4 years and a member of the QLD State Junior Team in 2008 which won the Australian Junior Girls Inter-State Series.

AGE NO BARRIER Congratulations to the youngest and oldest members of the club Wade Hart and Alan George. Wade is the 2017 Coolum Croquet Club Golf Croquet Champion and Alan is Runner Up. Wade also won the Club's Association Div 4 Championship Medal. A fantastic effort by both players.

At the age of 91 Alan is still a very active croquet player and current vice president.

Anyone interested is welcome to come along and try Croquet free of charge both for the initial sessions and for coaching.

FAMILY REMAINS THE KEY

BY HOLLIE HARRIS There is definitely no need for discussion for everyone agrees - the most important commodity for success in junior sport is definitely, the Family. Last Friday afternoon at 4pm at Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union Club this commodity was indeed very obvious; the mums and dads were everywhere.

At the sign on desk they were lined up to fill in the necessary paperwork. Then down on the field they were two deep at the club tent to pick up their players kit.

This involved the players' jersey, shorts and socks. Out on the field behind the tent those little Dolphins who had helped complete forms and received their players kit, which they quickly handed to the mums and dads were having the time of their life by kicking the footy around with visiting Wallaby and

Reds player Izac Rodda.

Recovering from recent shoulder surgery Izac was happy to be in attendance. "This is a sort of light duties," he said, "I still have a couple of weeks of physio to do on the shoulder so a kick of the ball, run around with the little fullers and sign their footy jerseys is just the right thing."

To officially open the proceedings Club President Donald McKill welcomed everyone and in doing so acknowledged the presence senior sponsor Ray White representative Geoff Van Wackem and also visiting Wallaby Izac Rodda: and also the fact that this season the Madill Motor Group has come on board. "One of the aims of our club is to create a good environment for both our coaches and children. As today is about our juniors, and they are our future, I would like to

introduce their President Rob Frey."

In his welcome to families, sponsors and supporters Rob Frey said, "This role up is very encouraging and I thank all the parents for being part of our club. It is great way for families to meet each other and all the kids. I would like to thank our major junior sponsor Doonan Sand & Gravel whose name is proudly printed across the front of the jerseys. I am sure that our little junior players will do us proud."

This Friday 4 pm. 16 February same place, the second sign on will be conducted and with some 200 already signed all indications are for a great 2018 season.

LET'S PADDLE OUT FOR BILLY When master surfboard craftsman Bill Wallace departed the mortal shaping bay last spring, he not only left a gaping hole in the lives of all of us who loved his old school manners, his sense of fun and his indomitable spirit, he all but closed a chapter of our surfing history.

Only his lifelong friend, colleague and elder (by a year) Gordon Woods survives Billy from the decade between the end of World War II and the introduction of the Malibu "shortboard" at the Melbourne Olympics of 1956, and it's been many a year since Gordon glued a frame for a toothpick or ran a planer down a plank. Billy was recognized by his peers as the master of the toothpick, both in construction and in riding them (he was an Australian and, curiously, Victorian champion paddler).

Together with Gordon, the late Bill Klymer and Joe Larkin (who we lost a few weeks before Billy), Bill Wallace represented the pantheon of Australian wooden surfboard builders, whose achievements have been recognized and revisited in recent times by Noosa's Tom Wegener.

But beyond his important place in our surfing history, Bill was a much-loved local (since 1973) who still paddled his surf ski at the rivermouth at dawn until quite recently, and remained a vibrant part of local surf culture. I've told the story many times

The following morning, heading out for a day of surfing, sipping lattes on Hastings Street and discussing colonoscopies and stents with my retired mates, I walked past the home office - it's hard not to, being between the bedroom and the dunny - saw the resignation letter, ripped it up and threw it in the bin, and sat down and started writing this column. (And for the pedants out there, yes, I work on Saturdays and pay myself time and a half, whatever that means.)

last occasion in which Noosa surfers will gather to remember Bill, but it's the festival's celebration of one of its iconic figures, and of a life well lived, so let's make it the biggest and the most joyous.

Redundant columnist unfires himself In the wake of the recent shuffling along of too many mates and colleagues, well-meaning friends and even family (who should know better) have suggested that I slow down, stop to smell the roses and all those other codes for "retirement".

I note with interest that many of those contemporaries who promote this course have worked at the same place most of their lives and have recently accepted "voluntary redundancy", which is a term quite foreign to me, but I take to mean "piss-off money".

While I was pleasantly surprised when the French government chucked a healthy chunk of change at me when I left my employer in that country after just five years, in Australia I've worked mostly for myself over nearly half a century, so redundancy is difficult to negotiate and not terribly financially viable. Nevertheless, the other Friday afternoon I decided I couldn't take myself any more, threw the towel in, wrote a long letter of regret to myself, placed

before, but it's worth a reprise: In 1998 at the very first Noosa Festival of Surfing, Bill (riding a toothpick) was our poster child and we held a wonderful tribute dinner at Bistro C in his honour. The following year, on the day that visiting Hawaiian surfing elder Buffalo Keaulana was to lead our traditional opening ceremony, the everrespectful Buff explained that he could not do so unless accompanied by our own surfing elder.

Well, who else? I'll never forget Buff and Billy (or "William" as Buff preferred) hand over hand carrying the koa bowl containing the waters of the world to the shoreline to join them in Laguna Bay. Now it's time for us as a united surfing community to celebrate the life and honour the memory of Bill Wallace. The Wallace family has joined forces with the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing for a memorial paddle-out during the opening ceremony at 4.30pm on Saturday, March 10, at First Point, Noosa.

We are asking all surfers to join in this, and all who own a Wallace surfboard of any vintage, to grab it off the rack, or carefully extract it from pride of place on the wall, and bring it down to the festival site to display throughout the afternoon, and maybe paddle it out.

SOME WINS, AND SOME LOSSES TOO

BY RANDALL WOODLEY With the weather at last clear and warm, all the Tewantin-Noosa Cricket teams were keen to play matches last Saturday. As usual this season there were some outstanding performances and some disappointments.

The Firsts struggled without some top players, Seconds had a great win and Fourths lost by one run.

FIRSTS The team was depleted with top run scorer Ben Gear being released to play for the Scorchers and other first graders out with injury. Playing Caloundra at their home ground, TNT lost the toss and were asked to bowl in the 50 overs-a-side match. Things started well with Robbie Payton snagging one of their openers in the second over. Surprisingly, James Beesley, the season's Englishman in the team was Robbie's opening partner and showed some real skills in getting swing and lift off the wicket. He bowled 9 overs and took 2 for 23. Caloundra then lost wickets at 36, 41 and 68 but some good middle order partnerships slowly built their score and at the end of 50 overs they had registered 8 for 218. Best of the other bowlers were Robbie Payton 2-30 and Rowdy Thomson 2-40.

TNT began the runs chase after lunch but as has happened all season, wickets tumbled regularly. Captain Jacob Dennien held the innings together for some time but he was out for 22. Jarrod Officer looked like posting a big score but was bowled with a "jaffa"" for 49. Late in the innings Reid Campbell hit his best score for the club and remained not out on 43 and put on 41 with Robbie Payton for the eighth wicket.

None of the other batsmen contributed and eventually the team were all out for 160.

Next weekend the team travels to Gympie for a two-day match.

SECONDS The team were at home at Read Park and were playing Burpengary who won the toss and batted first. They 46 NOOSA TODAY

A good partnership progressed them to 79 before a fiery spell from Cody Wright (2-29) wiped out both of the set batsmen.

Reece Langan chimed in with 2-37 off 8 and combined with Jason Toohey to trouble their middle order. At 6-103 off 25 overs, TNT were hopeful of restricting them to 150. A fifty run stand off 8 overs halted those delusions and the Burps finished on 9 for 177. William Gear took 3-27 off 8 to be the pick of the bowlers.

For the first time this season Chris Wright (27) and Reece Langan (18) got off to a solid start to be 49 off 10 before both openers fell in the space of four balls. Darcy Morgan (8) and Kent Tomsett (26) steadied the ship to 85 before both were out in quick succession, to leave TNT teetering at 4-86 off 20. Then veterans Kent Officer and Jason Toohey set about the task of building the innings, playing patiently. They put on 50 before Jason was surprisingly caught on the boundary for 17. Next to bat was

teenager Harrison Lea and he supported Kent to move the score along to 143 off 34.

Now needing 35 off 6 overs the fingernails were getting shorter. The 35th over was dominated by Harrison who plundered a six and a four to take 12 off the over and relieve the pressure.

Unfortunately Harrison was out with three overs to go and TNT needing 12.

Another quick wicket and the home side were 7-165. Will Gear joined Kent and together they posted the necessary runs to win the match. Kent Officer remained not out on 41 and Gear 11. A great win for the team as they head for the semi-finals.

THIRDS- Unfortunately the match against Maroochydore started badly with some of the junior cricketers arriving late for the match. The understrength TNT side could not contain the Swan's batsmen and they compiled well over 300 in their 40 overs. TNT were able to muster only 90 runs in reply with Tony Watson and Giles Cunningham the best of the batsmen.

FOURTHS The match at Dale Officer oval against Caloundra was a case of the one

that got away for the team. So close, yet .....

Winning the toss and batting first, Caloundra started slowly losing 2 wickets early. Boundaries were proving hard to come by on the slow outfield after the recent rains. A strong 3rd wicket partnership and a flourish in the tail helped Caloundra to a respectable score of 8-149. Wicket takers for TNT were Luke Anstey 2-19, Justin Talbot 2-32 and Graham Chaplain 2-27 with youngster Cooper Lea chiming in for 1-3 off 1.

TNT's start was slow with some tight bowling from the Caloundra openers. Adam Bean having his first crack at opening was eventually run out on 13, with all of the first 7 batsmen reaching double figures. Scorers were Nev Kratzmann 11, Craig Moore 10, Shane Gissell 15 and Cooper Lea adding a valuable 11. But it was fourteen years old Max Cooper who top scored, finishing on 40 not out. It came down to the last over when 7 runs were needed to win. However, the TNT batsman could only score 5. A loss by one run was hard to take. â—? noosatoday.com.au

CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON IS ON The championship season for our surf clubs is definitely now under way.

In preparation for the Australian Surf Rowers League carnival at Elouera this weekend last Saturday two masters, two junior girls and one junior boys boat crews travelled to Noosas North Shore for a five hour training session which included ins and outs and some distance work.

Under the control of sweeps David Tomba and Mick Gardner crews trained in meter surf, while on the beach some parents travelling as a support group were in attendance. As a break from the ridged boat training sessions some board and ski paddling was included. This weekend's carnival is rated as the second biggest boat carnival next to the Australians. In by gone days Elouera Beach has been noted for big surf, so we wish all involved the very best.

The weekend was very busy, with the Sunshine Coast Branch Championships being held in small surf at Mooloolaba.

Sunshine Beach Coach Josh Minogue said, "For us it was a great carnival overall with some outstanding results from our young people. For us a third in the men's Open Taplin Relay was outstanding; five of our six boys were u/17. This is our best result in this blue ribbon event in well over a decade."

Saturday saw Sunshine win the u/14 Iron Man with a great performance from Killian Carrel and the u/14 girls' surf teams took first and second with all of their eight finishing in the top ten.

The carnival saw yet another outstanding result from Ruby Nolan who won the Open Womens Surf Race and the u/17 Iron Woman.

If this young lady continues as is, she will be one to watch at the Australian Titles. Another girl to watch is Olivia Emanuel who won the

u/17 ski and then finished third in the open; all achieved at just 16 yrs. of age. Yet again for the girls in the u/14 Female Iron Woman Freya Wilson finished second and team mate Francesca McKinley finished third.

For the Noosa Club Head Coach Darren Mercer is indeed very happy with the overall performance right through from the juniors to the masters. "For us the overall results are very pleasing in particular from our u/14s right through to the older ages and

the opens. On Saturday with windy chop conditions and a small dump the u/14and 15s went well. In the team events it was good to see our club once again fielding an open March Past Team an event which has been a tradition for many years; in fact they finished third in the open."

However in the teams Noosa was unable to contest the Taplin relay due to work commitments of some team members. One young member who is starting to draw

attention is Nick Sloman. Sloman aged 20 a new chum to the club, won the open surf race and this plus other prior achievements definitely makes him a swimmer of note.

Recently Sloman won the Australian Open Water 10kl Championship Swim in Adelaide and also one of the major open water swims at the recent Noosa Milk & Co World Swim Series. This definitely marks him as a possible future Commonwealth and Olympic swimmer. â—?

JACK MANGROVE

PLENTY OF OFFSHORE ACTION TO BE HAD What a swing in the weather, plenty of quality fish have been taken this week with some great species taken from the beach, river and of course offshore. Starting off with the river; flathead are in great numbers throughout the lower reaches of the river, wriggler tail soft plastics have been really working well with some outstanding lizards landed. For the bait anglers small fish baits like white bait, hardy heads and small pilchards have also been deadly on the flatties, make sure that you fish your baits on small gang hooks this will increase your hook up rate dramatically. There have been good reports of diamond, big eye and Giant trevally on the high tides around the river mouth, Tewantin and the first Ski Run. These fish have also been responding very well to surface lures, fishing at dawn or dusk with a high tide you will give you greater chance of hooking. Whiting have been in good numbers through the whole system with Weyba creek, the Frying Pan and the Bar area producing good numbers of fish.

Worms have been the best bait but peeled prawns and live yabbies are claiming their fair share of the bounty. Mangrove Jack are still being caught in the system with the noosatoday.com.au

deeper holes and heavy structure accounted for most of the captures. Live baits are always the best bait for these cranky red critters. If you can't get access to live bait, fresh strip baits of mullet or bonito will have the jacks feeding. Mud crabs are in good numbers with plenty of quality bucks taken over the last week, set your pots in the deeper holes near mangroves, for the best results; fresh or frozen mullet with a hint of tuna oil gets them in the pot.

Sunshine reef has been fishing well for grass sweetlip, venus tusk fish, squire and coral trout. Some thumping great trout have been caught on live baits, with the tusk fish and sweetlip being taken on pilchards and squid. There are plenty of pelagic's around at the moment, long tail And Mack tuna are still belting bait schools on the closer grounds. There is also still plenty of quality Mackerel hanging around on most of the reefs off the Sunshine coast, they are taking large trolled baits like whole bonito, slimies, pike and larger pilchards. North Reef has produced good catches of maori cod, tusk fish, sweetlip and a few nice size pearl perch out on the wider grounds. Barwon Banks are supplying quality snapper, red throat

emperor, and pearl perch with most fish taking pillies, fresh mullet fillet and local squid. Red Throats have been biting before sun up so get out early to avoid missing out. To the South closer in reefs such as Gneerings, Coolum and Murphy's reef is seeing jew, pearl perch, grass sweetlip and moses perch.

The beaches around Noosa have been fishing well with odd large flathead in the close gutters. Bream have also been in the close gutters, these fish will increase in size and numbers as the weather cools. The producing tide has been a run in, with first thing the morning the better period. Prawns and small strip bait like mullet and bonito have worked well. . The eastern beaches have been fishing well for Whiting with worm and pippies claiming some good fish.

Dart are still chewing hard with the larger fish biting at the top of the tide. A few jewies have shown up later in the evening with the best time to fish before moonrise, live mullet have been the undoing of these great sport fish.
