A Doveton man is fighting charges of stalking a neighbour, lighting a fire that threatened houses and barricading himself inside his booby-trapped abode.

Alexander Kraskov, 44, appeared on video link during a failed bail application at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 12 February.

He denies an alleged “course of conduct” that included weeks of racially abusing and throwing stones and glass bottles at the female neighbour and her house in Golden Court.

The terrified neighbour had moved out and put her house on the market as a result, informant Acting Sergeant Greg Pajor told the court.

On 23 September, the neighbour was allegedly awoken at night by the smashing of her bedroom window.

She reportedly saw Kraskov outside, throwing things at her house while taunting and laughing at her.

After she called police, a large fire was allegedly started outside and spread towards her house.

Another neighbour frantically tried to extinguish the blaze while Kraskov allegedly rode a bicycle up and down the street and yelled racial taunts.

Emergency services extinguished the blaze as Kraskov barricaded himself inside his house, the court heard.

Police, believing there were man-traps protecting the front yard as well as the home’s windows, negotiated with Kraskov but did not risk arresting him. They left the scene, arresting him as he walked down Rowan Street more than two weeks later.

On his stroll, Kraskov was carrying a marine flare, a metal pole and a large amount of syringes, the court heard.

Inside his house was a form of “man trap”, Sgt Pajor said.

It consisted of an unloaded gun on the floor, which was connected via nylon string to behind the front door.

Bottles of suspected fuel were allegedly found throughout the “filthy” and “cluttered” house.

After the house was given the all-clear by the police bomb unit, detectives seized a crossbow, a martial-arts sword and spear gun from the hallway, the court was told.

Kraskov had drug issues and an “extensive” criminal history including armed robbery, deceptions, handling stolen goods, weapons, drugs, serious assaults and escaping prison, the court heard.

He’d also failed to answer bail and breached suspended sentences, Sgt Pajor said.

“He is an incredible risk to neighbours and the broader public.”

Kraskov applied to be bailed to a close relative’s home in Drouin.

That relative had been victim of an assault and threats from Kraskov and had taken an intervention order against him in March 2017, the court heard.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen questioned why police took more than two weeks to arrest Kraskov despite his alleged risk to the community. If bailed, he’d be supported by CISP - treatment that was inadequate for Kraskov’s needs, Mr Vandersteen ruled.

Kraskov was remanded to appear at a contested hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 14 March.

Court slam dunks ‘ban’

Blind school fights for more students

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Berwick juniors coach has dealt a second legal blow against a basketball organisation in what he says is a fight to clear his name.

Josh Henshaw, who coaches Outlander Outlaws junior teams, was awarded an injunction to lift an 18-month suspension imposed by Basketball Victoria's tribunal for alleged misconduct.

Basketball Victoria was further ordered to pay for Mr Henshaw's legal costs in a ruling at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 February.

Magistrate Mary-Anne MacCallum found it was reasonably arguable that the tribunal ban was "significantly disproportionate".

"Until the court has the opportunity to hear all of the evidence, the ban should be entirely lifted."

She also ruled against Basketball Victoria for its hearings officer denying Mr Henshaw's requests for an adjournment due to a bereaved witness being unavailable.

The tribunal's refusal to grant Mr Henshaw an appeal hearing was arguably oppressive, she found.

"I am satisfied that the plaintiff has a prima facie case against the defendant."

Mr Henshaw has served six months of his now-lifted suspension - which banned him from coaching and attending basketball stadia.

He told Star News he was relieved he could again watch his children play basketball, drive them to their games and support the Outlaws at matches.

"It's been a stress on my wife and family," he said.

"The sole purpose was to protect my reputation, my children's reputation, my business involvement in the sport and any other future opportunities I can potentially progress.

"If I have an intention to coach or be part of the sport, I can't have aggressive charges on my resume that shouldn't be there."

Mr Henshaw said he wanted an apology to him and his family for the "inappropriate treatment", adding that the Dandenong Basketball Association had denied his wife a coaching position during the saga.

He said the question of damages was still open.

"It depends on what the lawyers find is appropriate to resolve the matter."

The decision follows Ms MacCallum recently granting an intervention order against Dandenong Basketball Association referees adviser Allan Manhire for harassing Mr Henshaw.

The order sparked an internal review by the DBA into its policies, procedures and training of staff.

Ms MacCallum ordered Mr Henshaw and Basketball Victoria to mediation by 9 April.

When asked for a comment, Basketball Victoria however issued a statement indicating it was prepared to fight the matter in court.

"The preliminary hearing and the substantive matter will come back before courts in May and accordingly it is inappropriate for Basketball Victoria to comment at this time."

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The state's only specialised school for blind children is fighting a campaign for survival, says its founder.

Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired lacks students and lacks funds, according to a state regulatory audit.

It has until 20 February to respond to education regulator the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority or risks being shut down.

Founder Alan Lachman called on Education Minister James Merlino to step in and secure the school's continuing registration.

Mr Lachman says the school has suffered from an unsupportive Department of Education and Training that has not referred a single state school to Insight .

Instead it had allegedly blocked referrals and acted as a "competitor", he said.

The department seemed to prefer blind students stayed in mainstream schools, despite the State Government pledging $2.4 million over three years to Insight.

"We don't have the students because we can't get the students."

The purpose-built school has a capacity for 100 students. plus three mobile classrooms to visit other schools.

Specialist-trained staff and aides - with a team of transcribers - teach in braille and alternative print formats.

They also make use of assistive technologies, a sensory playground and customised desks and equipment.

Despite more than 500 registered blind

Alan Lachman is putting Insight's plight in the spotlight. 177499 and vision impaired students in Victoria, the school has an enrolment of just nine children.

"It is completely ludicrous, so I've orchestrated this campaign to put this in James Merlino and (Premier) Daniel Andrews's faces," Mr Lachman said.

"Unless they want to go to taxpayers to say we've invested $2.4 million into Insight and now they don't care about their investment."

Mr Lachman, a businessman who founded the Berwick-based school, said the school was equipped to give students life skills and a "better chance" than in the mainstream.

But it required "cultural change" within the Department.

"The education department is in a state of denial about the future employment prospects

of these kids.

"If the prospects were good, we wouldn't exist. I wouldn't have done this.

"If nothing's done, the great majority of these kids will not get work."

Education Minister James Merlino said there was still funding currently available for the school.

"The independent VRQA regulator is currently reviewing the school.

"However, let me be clear, we will continue to support the operation of this school and its students."

A Department spokeswoman said it was "inappropriate to make further comments at this time" while the VRQA awaited Insight's response.

Red Roo’s work-like approach to progress

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Earn or learn ... that's the advice being given to Red Roo's irrepressible team of basketballers about to hit Casey Stadium this weekend.

Coach and director James Kerr instills a work ethic to the young men who have won a swag of national titles.

He implores his charges to enrol in study or work a job. And he's urging his older players get their driving licences and gain independence.

"You've got to get to work or actively look for work. That's part of being on the team."

He has personally invested his time and resources into the team based at HOOPS 24/7 Dandenong over the past four years.

Now he's helping some players find that valuable foot-in-the-door to their first job.

He tells them to be leaders and help turn around the "negative press" surrounding the South Sudanese community.

In the meantime, the club has grown to 50 players spanning five teams - Under 16s to Open Mens. They're a tight-knit and successful team.

At the recent South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Association titles, the Under 20s team won Red Roo yet another trophy.

The Under 18s came runners-up.

Mr Kerr said his program - and its success could be replicated and expanded across Melbourne as a cost-effective way of engaging young men. Despite making overtures to Victoria Police and Greater Dandenong Council, Mr Kerr has been unable to get their support.

"With all the money that the Government has spent trying to tackle anti-social behaviour, what has it solved?"

Mr Kerr said there was demand for Red Roo to start an Under 14s team but for a lack of available courts. His dream is for the team - with the support of benefactors - is to give the players the best opportunity.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk It’s easy to have tremendous sympathy with the victims of crime - not least because there are currently so many of them in our community. When it comes to easing the fearrs of actual and potential victims, police of course have a role to play, as does the justice system and the courts in general. But some members of our community, rightly fearful particularly of crimes against the person, now seem to be testing the boundaries of self-defence.

Firstly, they need to understand that bodily harm from crime remains far more rare than ordinary thefts and crimes against property.

And secondly, that a vigorous response on their part, if not tempered, has the potential only to inflame the situation.

Much of the fear comes from the most extensive reporting of crime the nation has ever seen. In print, on the airwaves and in blossoming social media, the old theme of “if it bleeds, it leads” has never rung more true.

All these outlets are delivering what their viewers, listeners and readers want.

The danger comes when community members then over-estimate the actual prevalence and effects of crime in their communities. And what we can never allow is for good-intentioned citizens to take the law into their own hands.

The concern, always, is that an enthusiastic over-reaction can put the purported victim in a position of facing charges themselves. Every citizen at all times retains the right to self-defence - but the concern comes when well-intentioned amateurs potentially go rogue, with devastating results for all concerned.

As in all such matters, the desires of self-styled vigilantes to act for the good must be tempered with a realistic grasp of their limited legal freedom of action.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former Coles staff member has been ordered to perform 400 hours of community work after misappropriating nearly $75,000 from two supermarkets.

Accounts officer Wendy Philp, 45, had been employed by the supermarket giant for 28 years before it was discovered she stole about $45,000 during nine bulk-charge orders at Coles Springhill supermarket in Cranbourne in 2015 and 2016.

She also pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $30,000 from a Patterson Lakes outlet through bulk-charge orders and over-paying herself with unauthorised higher-duties and back-

pay in 2016.

She had initially denied wrongdoing when interviewed by Coles' head office on 14 March 2017.

Her job was terminated the following day.

The court heard that Philp had undergone significant trauma over the past 13 years, dealing with extreme family events which Star News has chosen not to detail.

Philp, a single mum, had also felt aggrieved by working hours of unpaid overtime. After spending so long with the one company, she felt she was "worth a bit more than that", her lawyer said.

She spent the stolen money on "household

expenses" and her children, the lawyer said.

She had since secured an accounts job without access to cash and bank accounts.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said a psychological report tendered to the court gave no insight into why Philp's stole the money.

Philp's moral culpability was high, significantly breaching her employer's trust and exploiting her knowledge of banking systems, he said.

In sentencing, Mr Vandersteen said there was a need to generally deter other would-be offenders.

She was ordered to pay Coles back the stolen $74,839.68.

Warring couple hit roadbump in relations

The case was adjourned until 13 March for a psychological assessment on the man.

By Brendan Rees Parents say it's important for their children to walk to school but only a third think it's safe for them to do so.

New figures from the LiveLighter public health education campaign revealed one in four parents say a lack of safe routes or personal safety were reasons their children did not walk or ride a bike to school.

The campaign's survey of 2000 adults also showed 64 per cent of Australian children were driven to school most days.

This is despite more than 50 per cent believing it was important for children to be able to walk to school without adult supervision.

City of Casey delivers the largest school crossing program in Victoria with 190 crossings and provides more than 11,400 hours of pedestrian crossing supervision per year.

Casey manager safer communities Caroline Bell said the City of Casey promoted the health and community benefits of walking to school.

"It provides a range of positive outcomes including physical activity, neighbourhood awareness, and community connections and reduces the traffic congestion by having less cars on the road at those peak times," she said.

"We encourage safety around schools, through our innovative program, Think Safe, Act Safe, which provides a combined traffic enforcement and education program around identified schools who are in need of extra support to manage pedestrian safety."

"School Crossing Supervisors provide and promote safety for children, and other road users, around the school precinct."

She said council also promoted the Victorian government annual Walk to School Program.

A bizarre crash has occurred between two vehicles both part of a property dispute between two Casey ex-partners, a court has heard.

One of the vehicles had been driven by the ex-husband to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, where he claims it was stolen.

Two weeks later, the car was involved in a crash with a second vehicle in which the exhusband was a passenger.

Police were called to the collision where the ex-husband and the driver of the ‘stolen’ car had got into an “altercation”, the court heard on 12 February.

The driver claimed the ex-wife gave him the ‘stolen’ vehicle to pick up a trampoline.

Both cars were registered to businesses owned by the ex-wife.

They remain impounded by police as the former couple contest ownership of the ve-

hicles, worth about $70,000.

The dispute is part of a background of alleged family violence and intervention orders between the former couple.

On 12 February, the ex-husband appeared in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on charges of breaching an order by approaching, phoning, emailing and texting his former partner over the past six months.

Often the man requested to talk about the relationship. He had also threatened to selfharm in front of the wife and children, the court heard.

“My final words for 2017 are I still love you,” he allegedly told her.

He had been remanded in custody for several days just after being released from an involuntary stint at Casey Hospital earlier this month.

John Glazebrook's letter (Berwick Star News, 1 February), is correct about the wasting of ratepayers’ monies on junkets by City of Casey Councillors. In the same issue of your newspaper is a report about a campaign “Commit to Casey", a campaign that will cost the Casey ratepayers anywhere between $1-$2 million.

On Saturday the 10 February the Berwick Star News Facebook page shared a story about two men who were on the run from police after overturning an allegedly stolen car at the front of a home in Cranbourne on Friday the 9 February. It is believed a man driving a stolen car crashed into a road sign on Monahans Road just after 9am. Police arrested a male on Monday the 12 February.

‘Vigilantes’ raided

By Brendan Rees A group of Cranbourne East residents infamously featured on national media have denied claims that they are vigilantes or part of a ‘No Fear’ gang.

It comes after police raided two properties following the airing of an A Current Affair (ACA) feature on Monday, 5 February which showed residents using deadly weapons such as a compound bow and nunchakus to protect themselves against a spate of burglaries.

Cranbourne Police Sergeant Graeme Pearce said a pair of nunchakus was among “multiple items” seized at one property on Tuesday evening, 6 February.

He said a Cranbourne man; aged about 50 years old was summons to court at a later date for weapons offences. Another male, he said, “had nothing of interest” to police.

A resident, Dion Watling, said he owned a compound bow but was “disgusted” by claims he was a human-hunter.

“I have a compound bow to go out rabbit hunting and deer hunting. That’s it. It’s not for turning around hunting humans.”

“If I was in fear of my life and I saw blokes coming towards my house with weapons, I would go for a butcher’s knife, a compound bow, whatever I’ve got to deter them,” Mr Watling said.

“If my life is in danger I will kill the b****** if I was left with no other alternative.”

“I’m not a violent person; never have been.

I don’t want to use it (compound bow) and I dread the day that I have to.”

Mr Watling, who was taking legal action against ACA, said the ACA producer Luke Mortimer even tried to push him and the other neighbours in getting “together like we’re a big gang.”

Mr Watling said police raided his house on Tuesday evening, 6 February but they did not seize any items.

He said he patrolled the streets at night because of the lack of police presence but adds “I don’t carry any weapons with me.”

“We’re ringing the police and they’re not turning up. We do have people here that are petrified.”

Another resident named James, who asked not reveal his surname says he was made to look like a “buffoon” after displaying his nunchaku skills for the ACA cameras.

He said he only armed himself after having a puppy stolen from his property in recent months.

But he added police had seized his nunchakus on Tuesday, 6 February.

“People who watch A Current Affair are actually becoming stupider by watching the program,” he said.

A neighbour named Mel, who also asked not reveal her surname, says the ACA story was a “joke”.

“They cut out the bits to make it seem a lot different to what it is,” she said.

“There’s no gang activity, we don’t group up at night and go walk in the street and all of that.”

Support for cancer crew

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Alan McTaggart felt the time was right to start giving back to fellow cancer survivors.

The illness is years behind the 27-year-old Endeavour Hills operations manager.

But he has jumped into support his high school buddy Daniel Margariti taking part in next month's cancer research fundraiser Casey Relay for Life.

Mr McTaggart has also committed himself to helping Mr Margariti's patient support group Young Adult Cancer Support (YACS).

"For a long time I'd wanted to give back," Mr McTaggart said.

"When Daniel approached me, I thought it's my time to shine and get on board."

YACS gives young adult patients - who often feel isolated from peers - the chance to meet, talk and go out for fun.

It even reaches interstate, hooking up young people on the messenger app Hangouts.

Mr McTaggart had overcome his illness before reaching young adulthood. But he certainly knows something about the patients' journey.

At 13, Mr McTaggart was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. He overcame the illness after two and a half years of chemo.

He remembers the patients who didn't make it while he was in hospital, and feels fortunate.

"It's just good to know they (YACS participants) are getting the support they need."

However, his self-esteem took a hit while he was ill.

His appearance changed dramatically through the hair loss from chemo and the weight gain from steroids.

"I felt behind everyone else. I felt like they were on the bus and I was late to the bus stop."

Students at his school treated him with kid gloves. Though motivated by kindness, their behaviour made Mr McTaggart more uncomfortable.

"One day a student didn't know who I was and made a remark about my weight.

"I felt good about that because I was being treated normally again."

Already shy and self-conscious, he kept to a tight circle of family and friends. His doctor told him if he stayed positive, he'd beat the illness.

"I just wanted to get through it."

He now has a full-time job, a mortgage and is playing in a band Cloud Castles.

In a way, cancer prepared him for a life in business.

"Because of my illness, I've wanted to do things on my own and not rely on my own."

Bold business school plan With astonishing haste, Casey Council is set to push for an ambitious, specialist business school to open its doors by 1 July.

The council is seeking to create the Casey School of Business with the help of Federation University and business partners.

In a motion approved by councillors on 6 February, the school is described as filling a niche for school leavers between high school study and business degrees.

It would also teach on the challenges of running a small business - especially within the enterprise's first 12 months - and help Small, Medium Enterprises expand their

workforces.

The school would also provide lofty research and development into future economic activity such as digital disruption, sustainability, international trade and public private partnerships.

Under the fast timelines, Casey will seek a memorandum of understanding with Federation University by 30 April.

The motion was authored by an absent Cr Sam Aziz, and presented by Cr Gary Rowe.

"We've got to start moving some date parameters so things don't drag on," Cr Rowe said.

Casey will also prepare a report within

weeks assessing its economic development partnership with Cardinia Shire Council.

It will examine the partnership's costs, the "distribution of responsibilities" between the councils and its future potential.

"We cannot afford to stagnate," Cr Rowe said.

"We can't allow anything that will drag us backwards or stagnate everything we are looking forward to achieve.

"Cr Aziz is keen to make decisions to optimise performance of this group in the critical area of economic development."

Cr Damien Rosario, who supported the concept, queried the feasibility of the 1 July

deadline given the school's "innovative and extensive" mission.

Federation University's deputy vicechancellor Professor Andy Smith confirmed the university was working on a MOU with Casey to deliver a "wide range" of business programs.

Professor Smith said the Federation Business School would continue to be the University's only provider of business programs and courses in Berwick.

Rates pop up Rate-reminder notices have started popping up on mobile phone screens near you.

Starting from this month, about 16,000 digital reminders are being sent to Casey ratepayers who opted to pay the full invoice by 15 February.

The reminders have included an online link to either pay the bill or apply for an instalment plan. Casey chief financial officer Andrew Davis said the trial was a "friendly reminder", part of an effort to ease the pressure on ratepayers.

"Council is aware that the notion of paying rates can be accompanied by some stress, and these reminders, as well as the option to pay through instalments will hopefully ease some of that pressure," he said.

"This is the first instance that Council has trialled a mass text message reminder of this scale, and we are pleased with the outcome of this so far."

What is something people don't know about you?

I grew up on a dairy farm on the Mary River near Kenilworth in Southeast QLD. My parents were Dutch migrants and we travelled to Australia on a Lockheed Super Constellation chartered by the Australian Government. It took four days to make the journey. As a five year old I still remember the huge flames erupting from the rear of the engines.

What was your most memorable moment?

Apart from the usual such as getting married to my wife of 45 years and having four children and 12 grandchildren, my most graphic memory was watching my 3 year old brother, my mother and Grandfather fall through the ice as they took a last walk on the canal before departing for Australia. I watched as they finally found my brother and tried in vain to revive him. His little coffin was placed in our lounge and I remember almost being envious that he was now in heaven with Jesus.

What would your last meal be?

I would have loved to be at the fulcrum of history - the crucifixion of Jesus and to witness the universe changing events that took place that day. Probably a long way back with the other disciples as the history of the world changed forever.

For it's incredible compassion and respect for the dignity of the poorest in society I can't go past Call the Midwife.

That's easy - The Bible, especially the Gospels.

Telling a joke to half a dozen colleagues and my former College Professors and getting the

punchline wrong so it made no sense.

Also at school I was initiated by having my face planted in a cow pat but I accepted that as par for the course. I managed to win most academic awards, win every running race except the 100 yards dash and become a House Captain but I also led a gang of shanghai (slingshot) wielding boys in our constant gang battles. O the joys of a country school with 45 minute Little Lunches for playing endless games of cricket.

Urologist Philip McCahy often gets asked what urologists actually do.

Once he has clarified that no, he does not deal with brains and nerves (which he says often happens), he explains that his work actually involves looking after the body’s “waterworks".

“Basically, urologists deal with the surgical aspects of the urinary system - kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostates in men, urethra, and the male sexual organs,” Mr McCahy said.

“This covers a lot of ground including urinary tract stones ... urinary infections, continence issues and cancer of the various organs.

“Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosed in men, and cancers of the bladder and kidneys are amongst the top 10 cancers diagnosed in either sex.”

Mr McCahy explained that the good news about most of these cancers is that they generally have a good prognosis (unlike cancers such as stomach and oesophagus), but they must be diagnosed early and be under expert urological review.

“There are also highly specialised areas such as paediatric urology, surgical reconstruction following major surgery, gender reassignment or inherited conditions and the treatment of erectile dysfunction and infertility,” Mr McCahy said.

Ed’s simple gesture

By Russell Bennett For the next little while, Pakenham cricket legend Eddie Lewis may just be unrecognisable to generations of locals.

On Saturday at Toomuc Reserve he sat still as the hairs from his bushy, white, iconic beard blew away in the breeze all thanks to another iconic Pakenham figure, Graham 'Uncle' Treloar.

Eddie hadn't been seen without a beard for over 45 years, but that all changed on Saturday as part of the Pakenham Cricket Club's Pink Ladies Day to raise awareness of breast cancer and funds for the McGrath Foundation.

Hundreds of ladies gathered around the RL 'Cracker' Jackson Stand on Pakenham's front oval to watch Eddie do his bit for the cause as his stunned family watched on.

"I felt a bit rough at stages, but we got there," Eddie said after the shave, which was a key component of the cricket club event that raised a staggering $10,487 for the McGrath Foundation.

"When the beard was half off and I felt that side of my face, I thought this is a bit of a worry!"

After the shave, back in the rooms, Eddie admitted he became emotional - particularly when presented with a Mark Knight caricature of him with his beard.

"I was talking to a lady who'd gone through breast cancer and she just about had me in tears," he said.

"I just said 'I'm only shaving my beard off you've gone through the hard yards. "Whether my beard grows back or not isn't a major drama, but you've got to go through life getting tests all the time which is always a worry in the back of the mind'."

The many feature race conquests of Fernando Bale, which was also trained by Andrea Dailly, included country cups successes at Bendigo and Traralgon.

Mossimo Bale’s Cranbourne triumph continued the sensational start to his champion father’s stud career.

We haven’t had as many group winners lately compared to a couple of years ago, so this is a really nice feeling, and it’s even more special because he’s a son of Fernando Bale,” Andrea Dailly said.

The complexion of the $47,000 to-thewinner Cranbourne Cup changed dramatically with the scratching of superstar Up Hill Jill, which saw Traralgon Cup hero Poke The Bear, another son of Fernando Bale, trained by Seona Thompson, start $2.40 favourite from box eight.

Kate Gorman’s Monster Fish, runner-up to Poke The Bear in the Traralgon Cup and then again in the Cranbourne heats, was the $4.40 second elect from box two, while Mossimo Bale was an $11.10 outsider from box six after a 30.26sec heat victory at his Cranbourne debut.

Striving to go one better than at Traralgon, Monster Fish was best to begin and led Mossimo Bale rounding the first turn, while punter’s fancy Poke The Bear was awkwardly positioned, trapped wide outside reserve Jesaulenko.

Monster Fish and Mossimo Bale broke clear down the back and Mossimo Bale wore down the gallant Monster Fish in the home straight to score by 1.41 lengths in 30.12 seconds, at an impressive 14 from 30 strike rate, with a luckless Poke The Bear rattling home to finish third.

“He isn’t in the same league as Fernando Bale was but he’s a very good dog, and when he settled second behind Monster Fish I was just hoping he’d be strong enough to run him down, and he was,” Dailly said.

“We call him Batman at home because of the markings on his face, and he’s a little bit more playful than what Fernando Bale was.

Fernando was a pure professional and it’s great that his pups are doing so well and that breeders are using him.

“The Wheelers are still breeding litters but not as many as they used to. It’s great that we can still win the odd big race together.”

While young trainer Kate Gorman was frustratingly denied a breakthrough Group success with Monster Fish for the second time in succession, she received $14,000 consolation as a result of Monster Fish being crowned the Gippsland Carnival Champion.

It wasn’t all bad news for Poke The Bear’s trainer Seona Thompson either, as earlier in the night $1.20 favourite Azkaban took out the $10,000 to-the-winner Backmans Supplies Victoria Cup over 699m, while Big Bubbles, prepared by John Martinovic, claimed the $5000 winner’s purse in The Van Echteld over 311m.

Matt’s in Golding touch

By Nick Creely Beaconsfield captain Matt Golding is in the midst of an individual season that could almost go unrivalled in Dandenong District Turf 2 history.

As the Tigers try to push off their rivals and secure a finals position this season, Golding is leading from the front with both bat and ball, with his numbers staggering, and his influence unquestionable.

The 24-year-old Englishman who is contracted to Devon County in England, is in his third season as a Tiger, and is not only ploughing runs at an alarming rate, but is bamboozling some of the top bats in the league with his relentless bowling.

On Saturday, Golding crafted a masterful 112 against Parkmore Pirates at Perc Allison Oval; his third century of the season to date; to take his run tally to an astonishing 578 at 72.3 in just 10 games.

His centuries have been against Lynbrook (113), Lyndale (107) and now Parkmore, while he has also feasted on Narre South (57) and Fountain Gate (80).

In the DDCA Twenty20 cup, Golding also made strong knocks against North Dandenong (70) and Springvale (57), and made 171 at 42.8 in four digs.

With the ball, Golding has been just as incredible, taking 36 wickets at 11.6, including 8/34 and 5/84 in the very same match, one of four five wicket hauls this year.

"I try to just do my thing, stay in my zone and try not to change too much; it's been pretty remarkable, but there's no real secret," Golding said of his season to date.

"I'm just trying to lead by example, I want to take that on and be a leader for the club."

Golding has a unique take on his approach to cricket, and said that no matter where he plays, whether it is back home, in Australia or other places around the glove, his approach is the same, and it's certainly working.

"I'm a firm believer that at the end of the day, it's just cricket; you need to adapt to conditions and situations, I don't really buy into different pitches, weather and conditions; you still have to bat, and face the ball, and if you're confident it should all fall into place," he said.

"It's similar with my bowling, I just try and bowl good balls, lead from the front and try not to be too greedy; it's kind of all fallen into place."

"I want the rest of the team to be looking at me and know that I'm trying to do the right thing, and set the example; I believe if I'm doing something stupid, it'll reflect on everyone else, so my mindset is to try to do the right thing, and play as a captain should," he said.

His stellar knock on Saturday against the Pirates; who sit in third spot; wasn't without its difficulties, but Golding tried to simplify the situation as much as possible, all with the mindset of keeping the rivals outside the top four from making a late run at the finals.

Hawks skipper Steve Gilmour elected to field at Hallam Reserve and despite a solid start to openers Jordan Cleland (11) and Darren de Souza (9), Gilmour (3/29) brought the undoing of the pair, taking three wickets in a matter of balls.

Experienced duo Matt 'Cheeks' Chasemore (64) and Nathan Pilon (41) rebuilt the ship, with Pilon playing the aggressor and Cheeks playing the occupier, and the pair put on 63 runs to level out the first session.

Young gun Jordan Hammond (2/37) then managed to trap Pilon in front with a searing delivery, and once again the Bears lost a clump of wickets to be 8/124.

Chasemore remained steady despite the middle order collapse, defending solidly on the good balls and cashing in on anything loose to pull out his trademark pull shot, and partnered with a more restrained Jarrod Goodes (17 off 65), the two rode a wave of Hawk momentum to pull their side out of a hole.

After putting on a grinding 38 runs, the Hawks rallied late to remove both Chasemore and Goodes to bowl the Bears out for 163.

It left 11 overs for the home side to bat through, and despite some pressure filled moments, experienced openers Leigh Booth (9) and Ben Hillard (3) were rock solid to finish on 0/13, leaving the Bears with plenty of work to do early on day two.

Down at Casey Fields, a sensational performance from an emerging Cranbourne has Dingley in danger of ending the round on the bottom.

Eagles stalwart Cam Kelly (4/9) was the engineer of a stunning bowling performance, skittling the lowly Dingoes for just 48 in 30.3 overs, with only three batsmen reaching double figures.

Without regular opener and coach Matt Hague, the Dingoes were made to look second rate by Kelly and his band of bowlers in Tim Fathers (2/14), Steve Miller (1/16) and Josh Dinger (3/9).

At stumps, the Eagles raced to 5/133.

Heinz Southern Districts also had a day out at Park Oval against premiership favourites, Buckley Ridges, racking up an imposing first innings total.

Batting all day, the Cobras made 290, with Adam Semmens (89) and the ever reliable Michael 'Slick' Davies (73 not out) slicing eight sixes between them.

Narre Warren also enjoyed another impressive weekend, with young gun Imran Laghmani striking his second century in a row to put North Dandenong to the sword.

A more resilient Magpies outfit were sent in at Sweeney Reserve, and once again it was Laghmani (113) and Janaka Liyanabadalge (55) that steered the home side in the middle order, with the pair putting on 120 runs, only a week after sharing a 204 run partnership.

Laghamani struck 15 elegant boundaries and a maximum in a cruisy innings as he starts to take the DDCA by storm, while Liyanabadalge played a second fiddle, as the Magpies scored 268 in 74 overs.

Mordialloc, meanwhile, continue to snarl at the right time of the year, and finished day one against St Mary's in a strong position.

The Bloodhounds made 197, and took a late wicket to leave the Saints 1/2 at stumps.

Swans seriously test the Lions' mettle

By Nick Creely For a day and a half, the young Casey-South Melbourne side certainly took it up to the benchmark of the competition, and they almost walked away with a memorable victory.

While the Swans lost at Schramms Reserve in the Saturday/Sunday clash to reigning premiers Fitzroy Doncaster, it made two great strides in its season, climbing off the bottom of the ladder and showing enormous fight and pride.

Big Trent Lawford (4/55) struck early, removing both Dev Pollock (2) and Luke Manders (6), to expose an inexperienced middle order into the fray.

Michael Wallace (22) and Chris Benedek (37) did a fine job in getting the scoreboard ticking over, and put on 42 runs to set up a decent platform.

But the wicket of Benedek; courtesy of consistent spinner Ejaaz Alavi (3/32); also brought the undoing of Lachlan Sperling (5), Wallace and then Dylan Hadfield (11), and suddenly the Swans were 5/84.

Youngster Joel Mitchell (55) and pace bowler Brendan Rose (62) then got together, combining resilience with class, to spend some valuable time out in the middle, and the pair put on a brilliant 92 run stand.

The pair both crossed their maiden first XI half centuries, in a milestone for the two talented players, as the Swans reached a competitive 211.

The Lions were shaky on day two, with Rose (2/38) and Jackson Fry (1/34) taking three early scalps as Nathan Lambden (leg) missed with injury, and suddenly the Lions were on the back foot at 3/13.

Skipper Peter Dickson (90 not out) oozed class and eventually the Lions fought to a hard fought four wicket win, with Lawford (42 not out) helping guide the home side to victory.

But Swans coach Prabath Nissanka was proud of his troops for fighting tooth and nail; especially with the bat; and almost clinching the upset of the season.

"But we weren't good enough to beat them, but lots of positives to take out, for sure."

Those positives; according to Nissanka; were that of Brendan Rose and Joel Mitchell; who are part of an exciting future at the club.

"He (Rose) batted so well; if he had a couple of wickets to bat with, he would have actually scored a century," Nissanka said.

"Joel has a lot of talent, we all know that; he can play 360 degree shots, but it's about spending more time in the middle, and that is something we work with him, and talking to him very often about how he will build an innings.

"This is a young side, I was expecting a tough year; as long as they learn from their mistakes, and start learning to build an innings and get bigger runs, that will be good for our future."

Warriors are set to rise

By Russell Bennett The West Gippsland Warriors will take a mixture of youth and experience into their assault on Division 2 of the VCCL’s Melbourne Country Week next week.

More than half of this year’s 15-man final squad are returning players from the group that emerged victorious from Division 3 last year.

Skipper Dom Paynter and vice-captain Aaron Avery will once again be joined by Mark Cooper, Chris Bright, Rob Elston, Josh Lownds, Ben Spicer and Jason Williams while Tooradin star Tom Hussey has also joined the mix.

While a number of other, experienced players were unavailable for selection this year, WGCA Country Week coordinator Phil Anning said he and the selection panel are “absolutely rapt” with the final squad.

“Dom had a good chat to the young blokes in the side on Sunday and told them to just enjoy the experience,” Anning said.

“We’re really looking forward to taking Nick Sadler, Mitch Cammarano, Mitch Thomas, Tyler Clark and Kallan Braid-Ball.

We just think that those five young blokes will bring some youthful enthusiasm, and they’re in good form too so they’ve deserved their opportunity to go.

“Once we knew some of our more experienced players were unavailable for whatever reason, we had no hesitation in going down the path of taking some of those kids.

“When you’ve still got a blend with blokes like Huss (Hussey), Dom (Paynter), Robbie (Elston), Wombat (Bright), and Coops (Cooper) it’s a good mix and I think the boys will equip themselves really well.

“They played a very important part last year in getting us up into Division 2 so it’s really good that they want to come back and

cement and consolidate our position in Division 2 for years to come. In the past we’ve been promoted and dropped back pretty quickly the next year or two, so what we want to do now is consolidate our position in Division 2 and really give a good account of ourselves.”

The Warriors will open their campaign on Monday at Yarrambat against Bendigo and District before also taking on the South West Cricket Association at Ivanhoe, and Sunraysia at Greenvale.

Good times roll at Narre NARRE WARREN BOWLS The good times have continued at Narre Warren Bowls Club, and not only for the Pennant results. The state titles continued recently and Narre Warren, Casey Bowls District and Peninsula Casey Region Novice Ladies singles champion Pauline Kempf made it through to the Victorian state final, to be held in Bendigo in April.

Starting with the final 16 players at Mulgrave Country Club, Pauline remained calm and won her three pressure matches 21-16, 21-18 and 2119 to progress to the final two left in the draw.

Midweek Pennant continued on Tuesday with two teams at Fountain Gate. Division 2 played Cranbourne RSL and continued its strong form, just outside the top four. Arthur Fitt, Alan Mark, Eric Sydenham and Wilma Stevenson continued their good combination for a 30-8 win, while Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, Keith Mark and Rod Lane won 19-18. Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, Geoff Ampt and Jim Millar fought hard all day and narrowly went down 23-16.

Narre Warren (1) 14-65 defeated Cranbourne RSL (1) 2-49.

Division 3 was also at home against Cardinia Waters. Len O'Brien, Nancy Pugh, Truus Henneman and Peter Castrucim took the lead early and were never headed to win 28-7, and they were backed up by Stan Bulmer, Nick Filius, Rose Rasmussen and John Green, who won 24-13. Pam Uren, Pauline Kempf, Micki Horton and Glen Cadman's rink was close - going down 18-12.

Narre Warren (2) 14-64 defeated Cardinia Waters (2) 2-38.

The improving Division 1 (six-a-side) travelled to Edithvale for an honourable loss. Jeanette Cox, Diane Peterson and Paul McNamara went down 23-19 and Helen McCarthy, Graham Peterson and Andy Tobler went down 22-14.

Narre Warren (3) 0-33 lost to Edithvale (5) 14-45.

Saturday was a better day for Narre Warren's Pennant teams with three of the four teams winning. Division 2 travelled to Edithvale and suffered another minimal loss (by 10 shots).

Joe Selfridge, Wally Finlayson, Rod Lane and Cam Lee's rink was the only winning rink, 1914, while Colin Groom, Eric Sydenham, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson just missed, going down 16-14. Mark Groom, Carl Lapham, Geoff Ampt and Jim Millar went down 17-12

The Division 5 outfit was one of two winning teams at Fountain Gate. They played Ferntree Gully. The rink of Arthur Fitt, Zade Bulmer, Peter Lister and Norm Hosmer was the strongest, winning 24-11, while Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, David Wilkinson and John Green won 28-16. The other two rinks also won, with Wima Haringsma, Alan Mark, Stan Robinson and Geoff Miller triumphant 22-15 and Graham Dodd, Tracey Storm, Jim Kempf and Ralph Devonshire winning 20-16.

Narre Warren (2) 18-94 defeated Ferntree Gully(5) 0-58.

Also at home was the Division 6 side against Mulgrave CC. Nancy Pugh, Michael Graham, Brent Grigg and Craig Moore led the way with a 29-12 win, while Sharon Bull, Helen McCarthy, Peter Castricum and John Zanon held on to win 16-14. The rinks of Stan Birkett, Pauline Kempf, Paul McNamara and Peter Groom (25-21) and Stan Bulmer, Rose Rasmussen, Micki Horton and Glen Cadman (20-13) both had small losses.

Narre Warren (3) 14-79 defeated Mulgrave CC (10) 4-71.

Division 7 was at Carrum, and also had a win. Darren Moore, Brian Hall, Diane Peterson and Andy Tobler had a strong 29-12 victory and Len O'Brien, Graham Peterson, Denise Peeler and Laurie Baker (18-17) also won. Dawn Baker, Margo Worsley, Arlene Peters and John Uren held on for a 18-18 draw, while Jacqueline Moody, Joe McGuire, Dermot McConville and Leo McGeary went down 18-15.
