Weather conditions played a huge role in ensuring local traders did well from the holiday period.

"Great weather helped, not too hot, not too

wet, a good mix of days that were perfect for shopping, for the beach, wineries, water parks etc," Mr Simons said.

The Olive Pit's Michael Dowsley said business had been steady.

"It was good," he said.

"The days fell just right and extended the season that little bit longer and the weather played a big part as well."

Summers in Ocean Grove and the Bellarine are enticing for many visitors.

So many smiles on dials Disabled Surfers Association lived up to its motto of 'Smiles on Dials' on Sunday February 4.

Nearly 80 participants and dozens of generous volunteers made the event a resounding success at Ocean Grove main beach.

The smiles on everyone's faces, from participants to volunteers and carers, was the highlight of the morning.

DSA is an organisation that seeks to provide an inclusive experience for all people with any disability to enjoy the rush of riding a wave.

Fair's new venue

By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove Primary School's annual Apple Fair has moved to a new venue.

The popular fair will be held at Ocean Grove Park this year after the school's oval was unavailable due to extensive upgrading.

"We're moving here because of the money we raised from past years has gone towards our new oval and it won't be ready in time," OGPS teacher Rebecca Martin told the Voice.

The fair attracts thousands of fun seekers and Ms Martin said organisers were hoping for another bumper crowd.

"Last year was our most successful year ever," she said.

"We're hoping to beat that this year. If it's successful, we'll consider moving it there permanently."

The OGPS oval has been upgraded with new synthetic turf, a soccer pitch, retaining wall and has been reseeded.

The move to the park was an easy decision.

"They've been fantastic to work with," Ms Martin said.

The fair will be held on Friday 9 March from 4pm to 7pm and will feature rides, music, food stalls and, for the adults, beer and wine. It's also Labour Day on the Monday

and organisers are hoping to capitalise on holidaymakers coming to the Bellarine for a long weekend.

Mascot Pip will make an appearance and the students are very excited.

"They donate lucky jars and we have an amazing parent committee who do everything," Ms Martin said.

"We're still asking for donations for our silent auction, so call the school if you can help.

We hope the 2018 Apple Fair is going to be the best yet."

Post mortem required The results of a post mortem will be needed to determine the death of an Ocean Grove woman, who died in the early hours of Australia Day. Samantha Kelly, 41, was rushed to hospital around 5.15am on 26 January, but died on Friday morning.

Homicide detectives were called to a Conran Drive home to investigate the death.

The circumstances over the death of the mother of two remain unclear.

No charges have been laid over the woman's death.

A large crowd of locals gathered at Ray Menzies Oval to watch Essendon Football Club's open training session today.

Around 500 footy fans were treated to a training session from the Bombers, who held a training camp in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads this week.

After the session, players mixed with fans for autographs and selfies.

Memberships and merchandise was for sale and the Bombers gave a massive thumbs up to the hospitality they received from locals.

Woodlands Preschool is gearing up for a big 2018.

The Wyatt St kinder held a meet and greet picnic at Ocean Grove Park on 8 February with a healthy turn out to start the new year.

The preschool has big things planned including a new name and new logo.

The preschool often gets confused with Woodlands Daycare and a slight name change is in the pipeline.

The front of the preschool is being renovated. Extensive landscaping is taking place as well as the installation of a garden and a new coat of paint.

The preschool is in its 42nd year and will hold an open day in March.

Rivals to support pink stumps cause Ocean Grove's most spirited sporting rivalry will be put aside for the same worthy cause in the coming weeks.

Ocean Grove and Collendina are fierce opponents on the cricket ground, but both clubs are proudly supporting Pink Stumps Day. Pink Stumps Day is an initiative by the McGrath Foundation to raise money for breast cancer.

The third day of the annual Sydney Test

match has grown into a huge day for the McGrath Foundation's cause.

And the Grubbers and Cobras, have committed to raising funds to help provide breast care nurses for patients.

Ocean Grove will hold its day on 17 February at 1.30pm at Ray Menzies Oval, Shell Rd. The club is encouraging women to attend the event, which will include an afternoon of food, drink and fun.

Collendina's Pink Stumps Day will be held on 24 February at 3pm at Collendina Recreation Reserve. Tickets are $20 and there will be live music, drinks and raffles.

Both A grade sides will use pink stumps and bails and wear Pink McGrath Foundation caps on the day.

Grovers toss and turn

Power outages in Ocean Grove and across the Bellarine Peninsula ensured an uncomfortable night's sleep for many on 28 January.

Many Ocean Grove homes were without electricity during the sweltering conditions from about 7pm until around 11pm.

A second power outage was reported in many areas from just after 11.30pm until 4am.

Some residences didn't have power until after 7.30am.

The peninsula baked as the mercury failed to drop below 30 degrees until the early hours.

The power outage meant households had to swelter through the night without air-conditioning.

Woolworths Ocean Grove was affected and had to dispose of most of its refrigerated prod-

ucts overnight.

Belly Bowls on The Terrace also had to dispose of refrigerated products and was forced to close its doors on the Monday, but reopened the following day.

Around 50,000 households were affected across the state.

Affected locations included Ocean Grove, Wallington, Drysdale, Curlewis, Mannerim and Marcus Hill.

Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said it was the highest peak demand ever recorded in Victoria on a Sunday.

Energy providers blamed fuse faults and unprecedented demand for the power outages.

Local shines on the slopes

Farewell to a gentleman Ocean Grove is mourning the loss of one its true gentlemen.

William Peter was better known as Bill and was a life member of the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association.

Bill played cricket with Ocean Grove for many years before moving on to umpiring. In fact the two umpires who officiate in the BPCA B grade grand final each season are awarded

the Bill Peter Medal.

Bill was known as a friendly and jovial man, who loved cricket and was a true gentleman.

A funeral was held to celebrate the life of Bill on Monday 5 February at St Peters Anglican Church, Ocean Grove.

A wake followed at the Ocean Grove Cricket Club on Shell Rd.

Barwon Heads local Jakara Anthony competed in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea.

The 19-year-old was the 2014 Junior National Mogul Champion and made her World Championships debut at Sierra Nevada in March 2017, pacing 12th in the women's event with a solid 75.45 in the round of 18.

Now a regular on the moguls world circuit, Anthony is starting to move through the ranks and is cementing herself as an 'athlete to watch'.

In January 2018, she stepped up to a career best in Deer Valley, Utah, USA making her first Super Final, finishing 5th overall.

Anthony was born in Cairns, but now calls Barwon Heads home and rose to prominence at the New South Wales Institute of Sport.

A multi-talented sports woman, Jakara was the swimming and athletics female age champion in high school.

Melbourne-based television news journalists Christine Ahern and David Woiwod were among hundreds which took the ocean swim plunge in Ocean Grove on Sunday.

Ahern, who works for Channel Nine's The Today Show, and Woiwod, a journalist with Channel Seven and correspondent for Channel Seven's Sunrise breakfast show, were first time participants of race.

The competitive and keen ocean swimmers happily gave the Bellarine-based Australian Day long weekend swim the tick of approval.

"First time I had done it - a lot harder than I thought it was going to be," said Woiwod, a former Life Saving Victoria employee.

"It is a beautiful beach here (at Ocean

Grove) lovely conditions - a great event it is only in its second year and it is definitely catch on and it is going to be one of the big ones on the coast."

Ahern said the Ocean Grove SLSC Open Water Swim Festival was a great concept and looks forward to seeing it grow.

"I thought it was absolutely beautiful - the water was wonderful ... ..it is a great event and great feel it will be around for years to come," Ahern said.

This summer both Ahern and Woiwod have competed at the Pier to Pub in Lorne, the Portsea-based Swim Classic and the Australia Day Swim in Brighton in Melbourne.

In 2002, mother of four Robyn Casey, from Ocean Grove, visited Kande Beach on the shores of Lake Malawi, Africa.

Robyn was immediately confronted and challenged by the poverty and societal conditions that were impacting the local people but at the same time was amazed by their warmth and resilience in spite of these conditions.

Mphatso Children's Foundation came from Robyn's awareness that children in this district were often going for up to three days at a time without a proper meal. Initially Robyn began a small nursery school in Mkuonda Village to ensure that the primary school aged children in the village received a nutritious meal each day and a pre-school education. From this small start in 2004 Mphatso has grown and now feeds and educates over 1000 children a day through 12 nursery schools, and is now spread along a 40km stretch of Lake Malawi.

Following the success of Mphatso's carboot sale in October 2016 where $4000 was raised, it is now planned to become an annual event.

The sale will be held at the Wave Baptist Church on Saturday 3 March from 8.30am to 1.30pm. Cost is $20 per site.

Mphatso now employs over 60 local staff in Malawi and runs numerous programs alongside the nursery schools including a baby feed-

Ocean Grove Bowling Club's Community Bowls competition is open to businesses, clubs, community groups and individuals for four Mondays in late February and March.

The competition has been a big hit in the past and provides a fun few hours of entertainment, allowing participants to to socialise while learning the game of lawn bowls.

Teams consist of four players (male, female or mixed) and cannot have an experienced bowler. You may enter as many teams as you want and you don't have to have the same players each week.

Prizes are awarded each week to the winning teams and the premier team at the end of the competition will receive the Ocean Grove Voice trophy.

Cost per team is $68 per night (or $17 per player), which includes a meal after the game.

It's a terrific opportunity for members of the community to enjoy a fun evening so get your entry from reception at Ocean Grove Bowling Club. Entries close 19 February.

Iconic beach race takes two Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club's annual RTY Edgar Rip to River event is on this Sunday.

The race was postponed from 6 January due to extreme heat and rescheduled for 18 February. All entries from the original date are automatically carried over to the new date.

The Rip to River is made up of four events: 10km Classic Run (start time 8am Point Lonsdale Beach below the lighthouse)

10km Walk (start time 7.30am Point Lonsdale Beach below the lighthouse) This is an unmarshalled event, so no places are awarded.

Four years.

In response to the continuing commentary from dog haters, aren't you getting bored of this conversation?

Really, first world problem don't you think?

Focusing on how negative dogs are. You dog haters wouldn't be popular in Europe where dogs are respected and even allowed to stay in your hotel room. Dogs have been around a lot longer than us. They have four legs for a reason, they need double the time of walking/ running. If you dog haters keep going on about your aversion of dogs then just stay at home and whinge to the goggle box. No one is really listening anymore. Blah blah, or even better, get a dog, probably the only friend you have.

Why did you want to become a volunteer surf lifesaver?

I did the Surf Ed program when I was younger and really enjoyed it. It was the people and it was way of spending time down at the beach and I decided to join to be a surf lifesaver.

I always have my hat and then I like to talk to the patrol captain first before setting up the flags and stuff to make sure they are in the right spot.

Favourite holiday destination?

Probably somewhere like Queensland, it is pretty sunny all the time and there is good surf.

Cars and birds don't mix I've spent the major part of the last fortnight in Bermagui, NSW, so fortunately I have some Voice readers to thank for keeping me informed of some great sightings around the Bellarine.

By the way, Bermagui was its usual fabulous self, and I managed to add a few birds to my list, including a cicadabird, black-faced monarch, Jacky winter and channel-billed cuckoo.

I've been going to Bermagui for years, but before I went this year I emailed the local bird group (Far South Coast Birdwatchers or FSCB), and I received a lovely email back with some tips on the best places to find birds in the region. I particularly loved Brogo Dam and the Bermagui State Forest. I managed to get my daughter's car stuck on a steep drop on the Bermagui Lookout when I was chasing whitebellied sea Eegles, and the back wheel was 2 feet off the ground, so I've officially decided that birdwatching and driving does not go well for me and I've been banned from my daughter's car. Now back to reality and work and no sea eagles or lookouts.

The first email I received was from Martin from Ocean Grove, who wrote about hearing and seeing eastern koels around his garden since 2010, and he has reported the sightings on Birdline Victoria. In 2010 he first noticed a female eastern koel sitting on a TV aerial on Richard Avenue. It was broad daylight and the bird did not mind at all being looked at, and it turned up there regularly, so Martin just took it for granted as one any of a number of unusual birds that Ocean Grove attracts.

During the next season the koel turned up again, and it was completely calm and did not fly away. It then shifted to trees at the back of Bellevue Drive for several seasons, but took to calling loudly in the early morning and evening there, and Martin also heard and saw it early one morning in trees near Woodlands Drive. It also would call from the Yellow Gums block before it had any of the new houses on

it. Martin said that last year the female koel did an unusual thing. In daylight it did two circuits of his house, as if to orientate itself, and then flew away, and wasn't seen again. Lynne and Martin both heard a koel this year in the Bellevue area. It was lovely to read Martin's historical account of the appearance of an unusual bird to our region, and I appreciated his emails, and await further installments.

The next email I received was from Karen, who noticed a few purple-crowned lorikeets in Marlin Drive in a flowering gum tree. She also saw the same species of lorikeet in Halibut Avenue. The purple-crowned lorikeet is not as common as the rainbow and musk lorikeets, but can be seen around the Grove, so great that Karen saw them. The purple-crowned lorikeet has bright-green upperparts and is pale blue below. It has a patch of purple on top of the head, and the face has a patch of red in front of the eye and a yellow patch above the beak. The underwings have a prominent red patch, while the undertail is yellow. I'm on a mission to see a little lorikeet, as I don't have this bird on my list, so I might have to hang around Marlin Drive. Thanks for the email Karen.

I then received an email from Robin Spry who is a great birder from the Bellarine Birdlife group. She noticed an all-white swan (as distinct from a normal black swan) at Swan Bay, Queenscliff, and this bird was described as a black swan (leucistic). I'm not (at all) an expert on bird coloration, however leucistic coloration means that there is a lightening or abnormal presentation of the normal coloration in a bird. I went to Swan Bay to check out the bird, and sure enough there was a very beautiful white swan surrounded by hundreds of black swans - an amazing sight. Thanks Robin for the report and sighting.

I then received an email from Kevin, who photographed a Pacific golden plover at Barwon Heads. The Pacific golden plover is a migratory shorebird, and Kevin's photo was a beauty.

When I went to Swan Bay to see the white black swan, I checked out the little egret colony at Queenscliff. They are beautiful birds and there were a few juvenile birds flying around, which was great to see. I also drove past McLeods Waterholes in Drysdale on my way to night shift, and I did manage to see the white morph grey goshawk that Margaret Alcorn reported on the Victorian Birders page on Facebook. I think white birds were the theme for the week, and the white morph grey goshawk was the icing on the cake.

I promised a Voice reader about a year ago that I would let her know if I saw any nankeen night herons. I have lost her email address as I have changed emails since then, so if she would like to email me, I would like to let her know of a few recent sightings.

There are a few hooded plover chicks around the Bellarine, so please take notice of signs on the beach, and keep dogs under control. Much appreciated.

Stanic, Walder save game Under 17 (Round 8): Ocean Grove 5/217 (cc) def Torquay 105 and 18 Ocean Grove produced a dominant performance in Round 8, defeating Torquay outright.

Skipper Flynn Hardiman won the toss and decided to bat. Ocean Grove kept the pressure on all day finishing with 5/217 from their 50 overs. Harry Tregenza top-scored with a hard hitting 84 that included 13 boundaries. He was well supported by Noah Cunningham (28) and Brad Walder (35). Louis Beale (20 not out) and Matt Stanic (26 not out) added some valuable late innings runs.

In reply Torquay struggled to score due to accurate bowling and tight fielding by Ocean Grove. They were dismissed for 105 in their first innings, with the wickets shared among the bowlers. Flynn Hardiman was outstanding with the new ball, taking 1 for 2 from 3 overs. The other wicket-takers were Louis Beale (1/13), Nathan Scarpa (1/16), Jake Wilson (1/18), Will Richardson (1/12) and Lachlan Murnane (1/1). Ocean Grove enforced the follow on and Torquay collapsed to be all out for 18 in their second innings. Flynn Hardiman was again outstanding, taking 1/3 from 4 overs, while Harry Tregenza capped off an outstanding game taking 2/1 from 1.2 overs. The other wicket-takers were Matt Stanic (1/12), Noah Cunningham (1/0 from 2 overs) and Louis Beale (1/2).

The outright win moves Ocean Grove to 5th position and gives them a real chance of playing finals if they can maintain this level of performance.

Under 17 (Round 9): Ocean Grove 6/181 def Highton 141 Round 9 saw Ocean Grove hosting Highton at Ray Menzies Oval. Highton won the toss and decided to bat, but were restricted to be all out for 141. It was a good bowling and fielding display from Ocean Grove, led by captain Flynn Hardiman, who finished with 2/30. Lachlan Murnane also bowled well, picking up 2/22, while the other wickets were shared by Matthew Stanic (1/11), Bailey LeMaistre (1/22), Louis Beale (1/18) and Brad Walder (1/1). In reply Ocean Grove were in some early trouble at 2/16, but a fine partnership of 87 between top-scorer Matthew Stanic (63) and all-rounder Brad Walder (41) put Ocean Grove on top. Late contributions from Rory Monteith (13), Louis Beale (13 not out) and Nathan Scarpa (10) ensured that Ocean Grove passed Highton’s score, finishing on 6/181. The win puts Ocean Grove into the top four on the eve of the Finals, and a bye in the final round should ensure that they will get their chance to play Finals cricket.

UNDER 15s Collendina played host to Barwon Heads in this must win round 9 two day clash. The Cobras’ prospects for playing finals are becoming increasingly unlikely with two rounds left and a 12 point gap behind fourth place. Any loss in these last two rounds would spell the end of any final hopes. Barwon Heads won the toss and elected to bat. This proved to be a good move as the first wicket didn’t fall until the score was on 112. Max McLachlan removed the dangerous Wil Snookes to finish with the figures of 1/26 off eight overs. There were only two other wicket takers for the Cobras with Diesel McNeil taking 2/48 off eight overs and the stand out performance off the morning from Nick Gibbon who took 4/28 off seven overs. At the end of the first morning’s play the Seagulls made it to 9/220 from 49 overs. If the Cobras want to play finals they will have to put in one of their best performances of the season with the bat to chase down the opposition’s score.

Xavier Norman and Izaak Terhorst opened the batting but the opening stand only lasted 14 runs when Norman was dismissed for five.

The score soon plummeted to 3/26 and the Cobras were in trouble. Nick Gibbon came to the crease to join Terhorst and they put on a steadying 50 run partnership to get the score to 4/76 when Terhorst was dismissed for a great 39. Brodie Muscat made a solid contribution of 30 and Ollie Northam was good with 18 but the standout was Nick Gibbon with a fine oceangrovevoice.com.au

UNDER 13s Round 8 vs Torquay White Great game spoilt a little by rain on the second day. Torquay took the honours with 173 runs matching the Cobras 126 run total.

by Noah Jeffrey(17) and Harrisyn Wingrave (17) but just not quite enough from the lower order. Angus Peters managed the conditions the best with two wickets and Fraser Stow got

his first U13 wicket on debut.

Round 9 vs Drysdale Stratton The boys travelled to Drysdale for a terrific game. Drysdale batted first and finished the day on a healthy 93 runs but the Cobras put six wickets in the book. Great catches by James Devine and Ned Badrock and a couple of terrific runouts set up a close game. The Cobras then battled along to be 5/59 for their first 26 overs with Harrisyn Wingrave (8) and Ted Farrell (10) holding out a disciplined Drysdale bowling attack.

The Cobras started the second day shaky with a couple of early wickets but Jack Every (28no), Alex Gibbon (15no), Oli Terhorst(13) and Monty Jufermans (10) dug deep to post a terrific 156 run total.

The boys then cleaned up the last Drysdale four wickets to win the game by 31 runs. Once again it was the catching that was the highlight. Ted Farrell starred with sticky hands in the slips and James Devine showed us again why he’s the safest hands in the outfield. Georgie Every added another two wickets to his ever growing season tally.

OG bowlers bag T20 victory Ocean Grove has bowled its way to a fifth T20 premiership, defending a miserly total of 109 in the grand final on Sunday.

Linden Giuffrida and Tom Kent stared with the ball for the Grubbers, who bowled out Barwon Heads for 70 to clench the trophy.

Giuffrida took 5-23 from his four overs to win the Daryl Burns medal for man of the match, while Kent chipped in with 3/18 of four overs.

Ocean Grove had few standouts with the bat after Barwon Heads bowled them out for 109.

Jackson Kent made 31 off 29 at first drop, while Huon Bertino smashed 27 off 17 at number seven, batting with the tail to give the Grubbers some hope. Barwon Head’s Sam Schaller took 4/10 off four overs.

Local hosts ‘deliver win’

By Mark Heenan Perth golfer Hannah Green credited her Ocean Grove host family for an equal third place showing during the Vic Open at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links this month.

The LPGA rookie, 21, finished at sevenunder alongside English golfer Georgia Hall with their tally of 285 and was six strokes adrift of winner Minjee Lee (279) and runner-up Karis Davidson (284).

It was a stunning result for Green and her best finish at the Vic Open.

Green said her stable grounding and support from Ocean Grove locals Ian and Cynthia Berry made it enjoyable at the picturesque course.

Ian and Cynthia Berry, current Ocean Grove Golf Club members, have been host family to Green for the last four years whilst the Vic Open was on.

Green’s partner Jarryd Felton, a professional golfer from WA, has resided at the Berry household during the event.

“I did not want to miss this event - I was very keen to come back and play and stay with my host family - it is a great event and I have really fond memories,” Green told the Voice.

well. I asked for a host family and yeah I have stayed with them ever since - they have always invited me back.

“We have a really good relationship - so that’s nice.”

It was eventful lead up to Vic Open. Green arrived on the day before event began as she flew in from the Bahamas where she had competed.

The only concern was when she turned up to collect her bags at Melbourne Airport and the star player’s golf clubs and luggage had gone missing.

“I arrived at nine o’clock in the morning on the Wednesday and my clubs and luggage didn’t show up until 7pm that night,” Green said.

“I was in the same clothes for a long, long time - I was just stressed to even make the flight.”

Unlike previous years, Green did not have as much down time to take in Ocean Grove’s coastal surrounds but said it was nice to be back.

“I like the atmosphere and you are so close to the beach - the sunsets and sunrises we have had - it has been really nice,” she said.

Linton to lead Grubbers Star onballer James Linton has been named captain of Ocean Grove Football Club for the coming season.

Linton is in his third year with the Grubbers and already has two Damian Clark best and fairest awards to his name.

"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity and can't wait for the season ahead," Linton said.

Matt Caldow and Kaiden Long will be vice-captains while Andrew Jarvis, Luke Cartelli and Justin Carey round out the leadership group.

Busy time for our livesavers It has been a busy few weeks for the Ocean Grove SLSC team.

On top of one of the busiest seasons patrolling their home beach, over 30 of the younger members of the team ventured north to Sydney for a three days of racing against the best in the country.

Competing in the Manly and Freshwater Open carnivals and the Nipper Nats over the last weekend in January, the team returned with some great results.

On the back of this success, the older members of the club took to the water again at Lorne in the Victorian Master’s Championships. Masters racing is always a popular event, and over 30 clubs were represented, with the Ocean Grove team gaining a few places on last year to finish a close fought third.

Then, on the Sunday, the seniors of the team hit the waves at Lorne for the biggest carnival of the summer to date, with more

Grubbers crack ‘fortress’

By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove A Grade claimed bragging rights over cross-town rivals Collendina with a drought breaking 37-run win to consolidate its top four spot on Saturday 10 February.

The Grubber victory ended the Cobras dominant undefeated run at the Snake Pit - the last time Collendina lost at their home fortress was against Drysdale at the start of 2013/14.

Only six points separates the top five teams as Barwon Heads (36 points) jumped into fourth after they knocked off ladder leader Anglesea (42 points), while Collendina maintained second spot (40 points) and Ocean Grove (39 points) moved into third and Drysdale (36 points) was relegated to fifth.

Ocean Grove coach Paul Jubber said it was a season defining win after their semi-final clash last year was tied as higher ranked Collendina earned a grand final berth and claimed the coveted BPCA title.

It was a double celebration after Ocean Grove won the Bendigo Bank BPCA T20 Big Bash final against Barwon Heads at Barwon Heads on 11 February, the next day.

“I think it is a bit of a monkey off our back beating Collendina – they have had the wood

over us at least three or four years at least,” Jubber told the Voice.

“To actually win at their home ground I reckon speaks volumes for where we are at as a club and we are at as a team.

“We are really excited beating them here.”

The brother of Jubber, all-rounder Sam Jubber, 34, proved a masterstroke with 4/23 from 17 overs.

He claimed the vital wickets of Nathan Walter (65) and Cobra prolific run scorer Ben Ricardo (16).

“Nathan (Walter) was looking pretty good at the time – we felt if we could get Nathan out we were a genuine chance to win the game of cricket… Sam (Jubber) was mighty and I was really pleased with his two (bowling) spells,” the Ocean Grove coach said.

Grubber gun bat Michael Kenneady (99) shared in a match-winning 110-run fifth wicket partnership with Mick Thornton (41) on 3 February.

Sam Jubber who contributed 47 with the bat on day one, said it was nice to play a role in the win.

“I think they (Collendina) haven’t been defeated here for a long time – so it was very good to be that team to defeat them,” he said.

“It was really about everyone doing their job, I was lucky enough to be the bloke to be getting a few poles (wickets).”

Ocean Grove’s first innings score of 236 proved a bridge too far for the Cobras to climb.

Ace Collendina bowler Charlie Lamb who took 10 wickets in his side’s outright victory over Queenscliff in Round 8, was unavailable and did not play.

Experienced Cobra bowler Jye Hearps was the leading wicket-taker with 3/60 from 21 overs, while Collendina coach Corey Walter (2/65) and all-rounder Andy Higgins (2/36) took two wickets apiece.

This Saturday Ocean Grove faces Jan Juc in their two-day game at home, while Collendina travels to Portarlington to take on the Demons.

Ocean Grove B Grade claimed an outright victory against Collendina in their two-day clash at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval on Saturday.

Batting first Collendina were all out for only 53 from 37.3 overs on day one as Grubber Matt Bellingham ripped the Cobras apart and finished with 5/17 from 15 overs.

unbeaten on 68 not out.

The Grubbers won by an innings and 11 runs after the home side bowled out Collendina for 73 in their second dig from 49.5 overs.

Billy Foord Englesman was the chief destroyer with 5/16 from 11.5 overs, while Matt Bellingham claimed 2/9 from 14 overs.

Ocean Grove’s C Grade win over Collendina made it a trifecta of victories for the Grubbers at the Bellarine Secondary College Ocean Grove campus.

Grubber batsman Zac Henderson was the standout with the bat after he finished on 122 not out on day two.

Batting first Collendina were all out for 126 from 36 overs despite a gutsy knock from Craig Jeffrey who finished on 84 not out.

In D Grade games Ocean Grove (5/153) won with five overs to spare against Barwon Heads (7/148) after their 40 over per side one day game at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve. Collendina (80) D Grade lost by 64 runs in their one-day clash against Inverleigh (144) at Inverleigh Recreation Reserve.

Boardriders go retro to kick off 2018 with tropical style The New Year kicked off in style for 13th Beach Boardriders Club with the Annual Australia Day Retro Comp sponsored by Tropical Doom.

With the dress code being ’Tropical Retro’ and the boards of choice being pre-1980 single and twin fins, there was an eclectic mix of both clothing and boards, including a Shane Country, a couple of very nice Klemm-Bells, a Pat Morgan and a couple of Michael Peterson shapes.

It was fantastic to see so many old and new members and it was especially great to see the club’s original president Lee Middleton there casting a critical eye over the classic boards he so loves.

The competition out in the water was fierce although the waves weren’t great, with well over 60 participants taking part and special points and prizes awarded for speciality manoeuvres including head stands and coffin rides. This year’s competition held a twist in that after Round 2 surfers had their boards selected for them by means of a spinning wheel, oceangrovevoice.com.au

which at times caused some controversy.

With the barby churning out snags all day, great Aussie rock blasting out from the stereo, fun waves and plenty of beach activities to keep everyone entertained a great day was had by all.

The six-man final was contested between Sim Collier, Shawn Todd, Lucas Crowden, Danny Dales-Sutton, Henry Hutchins and Makani Storey with Dales-Sutton holding off the more experienced crew to take the win.

The day finished with a massive presentation and Doom Fest Party, with amazing performances from Zuma, High as Hell, Jelly Mammoth and DJ Earl going into the wee hours.

Golf club going strong

By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove Golf Club is keen to spread the word that it is still very much a viable commodity on the local landscape.

The club lost several unhappy members when it underwent a major course change from 12 holes down to nine, but has reported strong growth during the summer season. The course was changed after a risk assessment was carried out, which found that around a dozen cars had their windscreens damaged from stray balls flying over Wallington Rd. "Over a period of about two or three years

we probably broke a dozen or so windscreens of cars," golf club president Peter Cullen said.

"Younger members were upset with the changes and wanted to go to a longer course.

We had a vote and 66 per cent of members wanted to change the course to nine holes from 12, but to make the holes longer. We lost about 20 or 30 members because of it."

However, Mr Cullen said the new course had been given an overwhelming thumbs up from golfers.

"Since we've opened the new course, we've had nothing but positives and not one nega-

tive comment about it," he said.

"We're never going to be a Curlewis, 13th Beach or Barwon Heads - we're a small club in the heart of town and we cater to people who just want a good round of golf."

Mr Cullen said the club was exploring the possibility of relocating the toilet block in front of the clubhouse.

"We're looking at setting something up out front with some umbrellas and barista coffee and giving people views over the river instead of having to look at a toilet block," he said.

The club is holding a special day of free golf

on Sunday 4 March to spread the word that it is still going strong. Tee off time is 8am and bookings are essential on 0434-077 543.

"We're inviting anyone to come down to have a free game of golf and a few drinks and a sausage sizzle," Mr Cullen said.

The club is also keen to promote its course to younger golfers.

"For the first time in many years we don't have any junior pennant sides," Mr Cullen said.

"We're looking for junior members and we'll be doing a bit of work at the local schools in that regard."
