Finding purpose

By Casey Neill Glenn Munso says his new book will help former drug addicts to rebuild their lives.

The Cranbourne personal trainer behind Hallam's Youth YOU Program turned to his own history with drug abuse to write I Quit Drugs Now What.

"I stopped drugs but I still felt depressed, I still felt anxious," he said.

"I hadn't fully healed within.

"I hadn't added value or purpose within my life."

He launched the book on Saturday 27 January and said it was already selling well.

"It talks about a stage of recovery that people do go through," Mr Munso said.

"It's to help people find that purpose back in their life, so that they're not going back down the path of relapsing and back into that cycle of drugs."

He said it could help them to align their values with their actions and environment.

"They're sort of lost because they have no purpose, they have no identity," he said.

Mr Munso said readers could learn how to heal and move on from relationships and actions in their past.

Last year he released Drugs Do Not Discriminate and toured the country to promote it, share his story and hear from others.

"We had really good feedback from the first book," he said.

"I spoke to a lot of leaders who overcame their drug addiction.

"They never relapsed, they never went back.

"They changed their identity, they stopped being a drug addict."

Their stories also helped to shape his latest release.

"This year we're definitely going to be touring all around Australia again," he said.

Ambos answer call Ambulances are responding to Greater Dandenong calls for help almost a minute faster than this time last year and the state average, new figures show The Victorian Health Services and Ambulance Victoria Performance Data for quarter two 2017-2018 also reveal that Dandenong Hospital performed better in the three months to the end of December last year than the previous quarter.

The State Government released the data on Thursday 1 February.

In Greater Dandenong, 88.1 per cent of ambulances arrived within 15 minutes for code

one emergencies for the period. This was up from 83.2 per cent a year earlier.

State-wide the average was 81.4 per cent, up from 76 per cent.

The average time for an ambulance to reach the scene of a code one emergency in Greater Dandenong over the same period improved from 11 minutes and 29 seconds to 10 minutes and 45 seconds.

The state figure was 11 minutes and 42 seconds.

It treated 73 per cent of category two patients within 10 minutes of arrival at the emergency department (ED), up from 65 per cent in the previous quarter.

The hospital treated 67 per cent of all ED patients within the benchmark time in the report period, up from 61 per cent in the previous three months.

Half of the hospital's ED patients received treatment within 22 minutes - better than the 26-minute median in the previous three months.

Donations helping desperate Rohingya Dandenong and Springvale's Rohingya communities are rallying to support their displaced friends and relatives.

They've formed an action group with support from refugee and migrant settlement agency AMES Australia.

They plan to send a container filled with clothing to Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh, where about 650,000 Rohingya have taken refugee since last August.

The Rohingya are a persecuted Muslim minority from Myanmar.

Melbourne Rohingya community leader Majid Abdul said many people were in desperate situations without enough food and medicine.

"Many of them left with just the clothes there were wearing when the military came," he said.

"When the military moved in and my village was attacked, I lost contact with my family.

"They ran into the jungle and hid from the soldiers for two weeks.

"They said 'it was not safe in the village and we had to hide'.

"My mother, sister and brother fled but a lot of my friends were killed.

"My family's farm is now controlled by the military and they are growing the rice for themselves."

Mr Abdul said his family was in Cox's Bazaar.

"I've spoken to them there by phone and I'm happy and relieved they are safe. But they are living in bad conditions in a small shelter," he said.

"Some members of our community have lost their whole families and are under stress so we are trying to support them also.

"And there's still people being killed so we are trying to work out other ways to help."

United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Commissioner Filippo Grandi said the Bangladesh government, charities, volunteers, the UN and non-government organisations were working to provide assistance.

"But much more is urgently needed," he said.

Police arrested a woman in Noble Park over a haul of drugs, cash and slingshots.

The Dandenong Divisional Response Unit members executed a search warrant at a Noble Park home about 10.20am on Wednesday 7 February.

No one was home at the time, but investigators seized a large amount of cash and what is alleged to be large quantities of ice and heroin, and two slingshots.

They arrested the 57-year-old woman in a car park on Corrigan Road, Keysborough, about 2.30pm that day.

She is expected to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court charged with possessing a commercial quantity of methylamphetamine, trafficking and possessing heroin, possessing methylamphetamine, dealing property suspected to be proceeds of crime and two counts of possessing a prohibited weapon.

Murder charge court date Noble Park man Dragan Stevanovic will face court in May over the death of his wife.

Homicide Squad detectives charged the 71-year-old with murder on Friday 2 February.

Emergency services were called to an address on Dunblane Road about 10.50am that day.

They found a 65-year-old woman deceased. She was later identified as Radmila Stevanovic.

Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday evening that Mr Stevanovic told a friend he’d killed his wife about 9.40am.

The friend then went to a pharmacy and told the pharmacist, who called triple-zero.

Police arrested Mr Stevanovic a short time later at a park near his home.

He’s due to appear at a committal mention hearing in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday 28 May.

Thieves stole a car from Keysborough and torched it in Dandenong days later.

Greater Dandenong CIU is investigating the theft and fire.

Senior Constable Blake Gilbert said thieves took the grey 2006 Holden Commodore sedan from a 7-Eleven on Cheltenham Road about 6.05am on Monday 29 January.

They set it alight in Alexander Avenue on Thursday 1 February.

Police have footage from the fire scene that shows at least one Caucasian man.

Few passions run as deeply in the Australian psyche, as does our endless national love affair with sport.

If we could channel our love of team and ball sports into almost anything else, what kind of country could we be?

World domination would surely beckon.

But there can be a dark side to this obsession. And without referring directly to any current case in the media, we would make the point that some over-eager people involved in children's sport on the sidelines could afford to calm down.

Attend any reasonably sized children's weekend sports event, and you'll be confronted by some very ugly parents and the occasional ugly club official.

Yes, the true result is always on the scoreboard - but some of these people can't seem to read it.

White line fever takes over, and all of a sudden, sheep stations are at stake.

Parents who find themselves in this situation should take care, lest they create the next "superbrat" ... and yes, a couple spring to mind ... of Australian sport.

The ultimate irony is that, almost without exception, our children are not like this. They're there to play the game, and winning it can be incidental.

Take an example from your children, people. Channel your passion for good.

And realise that their weekend sport is not an opportunity for you to re-write history as the champion you never were.

Car fall fine

Tip mound is rising

Andrew Nugent lives near the former Clarke Road landfill in Springvale South and asked the question at the Monday 29 January Greater Dandenong Council meeting.

He said he'd lived in the area for 12 months and large trucks had been "pounding their way along Springvale Road" daily.

"The road near the corner of Clarke Road had to be resurfaced due to damage caused," he said.

"The amount of dirt is now covering the entire length of Rowan Road and higher than the two storey homes across the street.

"I do not mind that the tip is being filled to create parkland but just how high will Mount Springvale be? Enough is enough."

Mr Nugent also said he was worried about the types of dirt being dumped, and drainage issues in the event of a large storm.

The EPA's southern metro manager, Marleen Mathias, said the Clarke Road site became an unlined landfill in the late 1970s.

It operated under an EPA licence from 1982 and closed in 2003.

Ms Mathias said the Clarke Road Developments owned from 168 to 222 Clarke Road and ESG Dingley owns the remainder, from 98 to 100.

"Current works primarily relate to rehabilitation works, including the placement of material to shape the landfill to final contours," she said.

She said the works were to be completed by the end of the year, and would make the land suitable for use as open space and ensure water could effectively drain from the site.

"The current owners are required to minimise impacts on the local residents during rehabilitation and also as part of ongoing management of the site," she said.

Ms Mathias said the EPA had not recently received any pollution reports.

Footy lunch breaks fund-raising record Greater Dandenong businesses raised a record $13,000 for charities at an annual footballthemed lunch.

Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce vice president Roy Sanderson handed $9000 to Make-A-Wish Australia and $4000 to the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation on Wednesday 7 February.

He's also the chamber's Grand Final Charity Lunch chairman.

The event was held on Wednesday 27 September last year at Southern Golf Club and featured former Collingwood legend Dane Swan as the guest speaker.

Guests heard stories from Swan's time on and off the field, and participated in live and silent auctions and a raffle to raise cash.

A Dandenong mechanic was convicted and fined $40,000 after a car fell and crushed a man.

Birch Automotive pleaded guilty to two charges associated with failing to provide a safe system of work, according to WorkSafe.

A court heard that the victim was a visiting mechanic to the site.

He was talking to a Birch Automotive employee beneath a hoist holding a Holden sedan on 12 September 2016.

The car slipped and fell onto the victim when the hoist arms moved.

He suffered a broken hip, eight broken ribs, a fractured sacrum (a bone in the pelvic area), broken collar bone and a heart tear.

The car also struck the employee, but he managed to jump clear without injury.

WorkSafe investigated the incident and found the hoist did not have its support arm locking mechanisms engaged to stop the car from slipping off.

WorkSafe operations and emergency management head Adam Watson said the incident was a terrible example of a trauma that could have been avoided through safe working procedures.

"Incidents like this just should not happen," he said.

"The dangers associated with hoisting heavy items such as cars are obvious and workplaces performing these kinds of tasks need to develop plans to ensure work can be done safely, communicate these to all staff and insist that they are followed.

"Staff should also to be properly trained so that they can recognise the dangers in the work they do."

The company was also ordered to pay $3500 in costs.

The popular volunteer-run festival celebrates all things Dutch, with their famous pancakes, music and dance being some of the highlights at the event.

Long-time festival volunteer George Uliig said the event was important for the local Dutch community to keep in touch.

“It’s a fantastic event,“ he said.

He has been involved in the event’s organisation since it started in 1975.

Highlights include traditional folk dancing, a carnival, traditional games for children and the Victorian Police Show Band.

Trusty creeks were home The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.

Our explorations from the other side of the McCrae Street bridge took us past the Kidds Road bridge heading north.

This makes us sound like a smart bunch of explorers in short pants, but in reality we did not know at that age which was north, south, east or west, for when we were in the dense bush, most of the time we could not see the sun.

So, when on an adventure, we followed our trusty creeks.

One of the first things we had learned was that they would all lead us back to central Dan-

One day when we were skinny dipping in one of our swimming holes that were in and near the Police Paddocks, this old bloke came wandering along one of the tracks, and stopped to talk to us.

When we were kids we considered anyone with a moustache or beard as old.

He was dressed in clothes that made him look like a cross between Robinson Crusoe and

Dr Livingstone.

He had a long walking staff which Nipper reckoned was a broken vaulting pole.

I thought it was a waddie for snake bashing.

He was carrying so much gear he looked like a one-man band.

He was lost, but he had a compass that could have navigated the Queen Mary liner.

This was the first time we had seen a compass.

Jinnie thought it was a small sundial.

The old bloke was wearing a stained pith helmet, so Nipper thought he may have been an off-duty cop from Oakleigh or somewhere.

We also thought he may have once been in the Indian Army.

He must have been a bird watches as he had a pair of field glasses hanging from a strap around his neck.

We started to direct him back to Heatherton Road, but he said he had come along Study Road, so we had to give him different directions.

When we decided this thing he had was a compass, Nipper said: “Well it did not do him much bloody good. He still got lost.”

As young explorers, we had already followed the Dandenong Creek out past Wellington Road to Scoresby and discovered the Corhanwarrabul Creek where Caribbean Gardens and Lake Tirhatuan are today.

The paddocks south of Heatherton Road, we entered from the gravel and grassed rivulets of the unmade end of David Street by crawling under a barbed wire fence and cutting through the open paddock that ran below the large clay pit of the hillside which supplied the clay for the Ordish Fire Brick Company on Stud Road.

The University of Melbourne-led ReminiSing study will allow people with dementia living at home and their family members or carers to join a singing group.

During the 20-week study starting in March, the Remini-Sing group will meet weekly to sing old favourites and new songs, and learn how to use music at home.

Austin Health piloted the research model last year and preliminary results indicated great benefits for the people with dementia.

University of Melbourne research fellow Dr Jeanette Tamplin is leading the study and said the most surprising thing about pilot was the great benefits to carers, too.

"The carers of people with dementia all commented on the inclusiveness of the group and the fact that they felt so supported and understood.

"They got so much joy out of doing something together with their partner/mother/father or whoever they were there with."

Uniting AgeWell is seeking participants aged 60 or older who have been diagnosed

with dementia, and a family member or carer.

Once selected, participants will be randomly assigned to either a Remini-Sing group or a control group.

Health and wellbeing assessments will be completed with each participant before the study and at weeks 10 and 20.

Uniting AgeWell special projects manager Carol Fountain said that when people living with dementia went to a day centre for respite, quite often they didn't have the capacity to share what happened on their day out.

"This program allows the carer or family member to share something meaningful and introduce music they enjoy to each other, as well as the rest of the group," she said.

Singing groups will be held at Uniting AgeWell's Community Services, 1312 Heatherton Road, Noble Park, and some other locations.

Bailed on a short leash A young man accused of a violent assault and robbery of a female has remained on bail after being caught trafficking drugs from home earlier that day.

Police unsuccessfully applied for Shok Adutmou's bail to be revoked at a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 5 February.

That morning, Adutmou was arrested during a police raid of his Dandenong North home.

Police alleged in court that they found evidence of trafficking including 23 zip-lock bags of cannabis weighing about 32 grams.

A large amount of unused deal bags, scales and two mobile phones with trafficking-related texts were also found.

At the time, Adutmou was on bail on other matters, appearing at court the week before for allegedly shoplifting.

He is also charged with a vicious assault and robbery of a female in October, in which the victim's face was severely damaged.

Police informant Detective Senior Constable Ben Oliver, of Greater Dandenong CIU, argued to the court that Adutmou was an unacceptable risk of reoffending and endangering the public.

Detectives were also investigating Adutmou - but had no evidence to charge him - over the robbery and twice-assault of a man in Dandenong at Christmas, the court heard.

The victim was allegedly bashed and robbed of his phone and wallet by six African males in Halpin Way on 24 December.

The same group then allegedly dragged the victim out of his home and bashed him into an

induced coma on Christmas Day. Det Sen Const Oliver said the investigation could take up to a "couple of months".

A defence lawyer said medical enquiries still had to be made about Adutmou's acquired brain injury as a result of a fatal car crash.

"Having him go to an adult prison without knowing what the underlying issues related to his offending behaviour ...

"We do not know what damage it could do."

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Adutmou's alleged cognitive impairment didn't seem to fit with his trafficking activity.

The trafficking was not "high-end" but there was "a feel of a continuing criminal enterprise".

He said police had "correctly" bailed Adutmou themselves after charging him for the October assault.

In granting bail, Mr Vandersteen noted Adutmou's young age, brain injury, support from Youth Justice and YSAS services, the investigation's likely delays and his TAFE studies.

Mr Vandersteen deferred sentence and ordered him to appear at court on 8 February to check he was going to school "as you said you would".

"If there was more evidence of involvement in (the December offending), the approach of the court may have been very different.

"He's going to be returning (to court) quite regularly, every couple of days from now on."

The bail conditions included reporting three times a week to police, a night curfew, not associating with co-offenders and Youth Justice supervision.

INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon rice bran oil 4 fresh shiitake mushrooms, inely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 2cm piece fresh ginger, peeled, grated 60g spinach, chopped 1 tablespoon chopped fresh garlic chives 250g chicken mince 1 tablespoon oyster sauce 1 egg, lightly beaten 30 gow gee wrappers

METHOD 1. Heat 1 teaspoons oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and cook until softened.

Add garlic and ginger and cook until fragrant. Add spinach to pan and cook until wilted. Remove from heat. Stir in chives.

Set aside for 15 minutes to cool.

2. Transfer spinach mixture to a bowl. Add mince, oyster sauce and egg. Season with salt and pepper. Mix to combine.

Place 1 gow gee wrapper on work surface. Spoon 2 teaspoons mince mixture onto 1 half of wrapper. Brush edge with a little cold water. Fold wrapper in half to enclose illing. Press edges together to seal and pleat to secure.

3. Place a large steamer lined with baking paper over a wok or saucepan of simmering water. Cook dumplings, in batches, for 10 to 12 minutes or until tender and cooked through. Transfer to a plate.

Opportunity knocks

By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong could soon drop opportunity for celebration.

Councillors unanimously agreed to consider a new tag line for the municipality at the Monday 29 January council meeting.

Cr Roz Blades suggested the move, explaining that the City of Opportunity slogan had been in place without review since 2006.

"One thing people love about the city is the number of celebrations we have," she said.

"I think it makes people joyful."

She would like to see the City of Celebration take opportunity's place but requested the council look at other options, too.

Her successful motion will prompt an internal review into whether City of Opportunity is still relevant and appropriate, and a report detailing alternatives.

Cr Sean O'Reilly said it was good to reassess from time to time.

"We always hope that the City of Greater Dandenong will be a city of opportunity going into the future," he said.

He suggested that any change should be phased in "so that we don't have to throw out old stationery and so on, so that we're not wasting anything".

Cr Blades acknowledged that the tag line appeared on municipal entry signs, council equipment, and more.

"The report will naturally outline the benefits and dis-benefits of any change and make preliminary suggestions of options that council might consider," she said.

Before the City of Opportunity, Greater Dandenong was Melbourne's Second City.

"City of Opportunity has served this city well," Cr Blades said.

"It has been and remains a most apt tag line.

"But in 2018, the question may be asked, is there a more relevant tag line for this great city that can similarly and more appropriately advance the interests of the city, its people and its businesses into the next decade?"

Councils cut costs together Greater Dandenong joined forces with the Cardinia and Yarra Ranges shires to save money on maintenance and give back to the three communities.

The trio together awarded a building maintenance contract for the next three years.

Greater Dandenong Council CEO John Bennie said working together cut the tender costs by about $50,000.

"We have also strengthened our bargaining power by working together," he said.

"The successful tenderer has committed to giving one per cent of the total revenue generated from each council back to the community in the form of grants or sponsorship.

"They have also agreed to employ at least two homeless or disadvantaged people from each council area, ensuring at least six longterm unemployed have ongoing work."

This innovative procurement process is a finalist in the LGPro Awards for Excellence to be held later this month.

Mr Bennie said councils were looking at innovative ways to save money in light of the economic climate and following the introduction of rate capping.

"All three councils were able to deliver better outcomes for their local communities," he said.

"We have been able to maintain the high standards of service delivery our community expects, while also saving money."

The idea to collaborate during the tender process came from a meeting between the South-East Melbourne councils about 18 months ago.

Anti-sky rail claims under fire

"I was shocked and disappointed to hear that a motion of solidarity and support for African communities within Greater Dandenong failed to gain any support at the council meeting last week.

It was a substantive motion, but its overarching purpose was, and I quote, "to affirm that Greater Dandenong residents from an African background are valued and respected members of our municipality".

In light of the racial vilification directed at people of African descent over recent weeks, in response to media framing of youth crime, this is an absolute failure of a council that represents the most culturally diverse constituency in the state.

Let me repeat, not a single councillor supported this motion put by Councillor Matthew Kirwan. According to local media, one councillor said he didn't support the motion because it was a state-wide issue.

According to the 2016 Census there were 1766 residents in Greater Dandenong from Sub-Saharan including many from Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan.

This represents one of the most substantial constituencies of African descent in the state.

What sort of message does this send?

In reference to the article Rising sky rail ‘unites’ city under the banner Year in Review – Newsmakers (15 January), it is amusing to see some of the premature proclamations that were made at that time.

Donald Trump would probably be contemptuous of Cr Tim Dark’s claim that the sky rail would build “a wall between two sides of Noble Park”.

It is planned to have plenty of space between the two sides of Noble Park, including a new road! Who knew, Cr Dark?

As for Liberal candidate for Mulgrave Marie Davenport’s ridiculous claim that the open space beneath the sky rail would be flooded with drug addicts and dealers, I think this claim has to be based on Ms Davenport’s prejudiced view of Noble Park having hordes of drug addicts and dealers.

Noble Park has its fair share of drug crimes but nowhere near that of the inner suburbs.

Anyway what drug dealer wants to operate in a well-lit “open space”?

Maybe the sky rail will not exactly “unite” Noble Park, but on evidence the pluses will far out way the negatives with this project.

As a resident of Noble Park for close on 50 years, I am pleased to see us getting a fair share of infrastructure spending.

Super load's Dandy journey The giant generator dubbed the 'super load' made its way through Dandenong on Friday 2 February with only a slight hiccup.

A VicRoads video covered the 256-tonne generator's journey from Traralgon to the Port of Melbourne, including its stint on the Heatherton Road EastLink overpass at Noble Park.

"Climbing up the hill it lost a bit of traction," a spokesman said.

"We had to add the third truck up the front to give him that extra power to just boost it up and tow him through."

The super load will make its return trip in November following maintenance in Germany.

The council will conduct face to face surveys at four parks to create clear plans for open space areas, sporting facilities and playgrounds.

On Saturday 17 February, there'll be sessions at Burden Park in Springvale South from 9am to noon and Parkfield Reserve in Noble Park from 1pm to 4pm.

There'll be surveys at Warner Reserve in Springvale from 9am to noon on Saturday 24 February, and at Frederick Wachter Reserve in Keysborough from 1pm to 4pm that day.

Anyone who can't make the face to face sessions can visit greaterdandenong.com/futureofparks or email futureofparks@cgd.vic.gov.au to contribute.

Boom gates are gone Construction teams have dismantled the red and white boom gates, bells and signage at the Corrigan, Heatherton and Chandler roads rail crossings.

Trains will start running along a 1.5 kilometre section of elevated rail from Thursday 15 February.

The new Noble Park railway station will open the same day, though works will continue through February and March to complete the fit-out.

Buses will replace trains between Westall and Dandenong railway stations in the meantime.

There'll be a community thank-you day at Ross Reserve from 9am to noon on Saturday 24 February featuring kids' rides, a free sausage sizzle and information about the project's next phase.

When I was in Year 12 I had no idea what I wanted to do next.

I considered being a teacher but I recall very clearly telling my friends, “If I ever end up being a teacher I will never teach anyone younger than Year 10 and I’ll never become a school principal”. I think God had a bit of a chuckle when my first principalship was at a primary school where I taught every class from Prep to Grade 6 every week!

Why Year 9?

Since Beaconhills College became the first school in Victoria to establish an on-campus, specialised Year 9 program more than 20 years ago, other schools have followed suit.

Various adaptations of Year 9 programs are now commonplace. But as we prepare to open our major new Year 9 Centre at our Pakenham Campus in 2018, I have been reflecting on what really sets our program apart.

Year 9 at Beaconhills is a ‘bespoke’ program. For the past 20 years, we have developed the key elements – Personal Best, Common Good, City Experience and the challenging Outdoor Education program – to really give students some unique and life-changing learning. Learning that matters.

This program was founded on research showing that around Year 9, young people tend to disconnect from their school work and families and focus strongly on their peer relationships. It’s a transitional time, where they’re learning about their own identity and place in the world.

At a time when young people can disengage from learning, what better way to re-ignite their interest than give them a term to develop a project that is their personal passion (Personal Best)? At a time when teenagers can become selfabsorbed, what better to discover the joy of altruism and empathy by handing out small gifts to people on Melbourne’s streets (Random Act of Kindness), or raising money for a charity organisation (Common Good)?

How a horse can help out

By Casey Neill Riding for the Disabled in Doveton is “not just a pony ride”.

Volunteer Gloria O’Connor has seen riders make remarkable physical, social and mental improvements during her 15 years with the Myuna Farm-based therapeutic riding group.

She reached out to the Journal News, desperate to encourage new volunteers.

When a reporter stopped by, a rider named Luke was sitting up straight on horseback.

Vice-president Rick Beeby pointed out foam blocks on the sidelines.

“Someone with very poor core muscle strength actually puts their elbows on that and they gradually learn to lift their head up,” he said.

“When Luke started he couldn’t sit up at all.

He had no core strength.”

Riders generally have a one-hour session each week.

“We work out a program based on the rider’s needs,” Mr Beeby said.

“We have riders who need side walkers, and riders who ride independently.

“We focus on their abilities and how we can develop those abilities.”

Luke’s mum, Sue Williams, has watched his core improve during his 10 years in the program.

“He’s got cerebral palsy and cortical vision impairment,” she said.

“He’s not blind but the message takes a while to get through.”

Scoliosis causes him to “sit crooked” in his wheelchair, but horse riding helps him to sit up straight.

“When he knows he’s coming he’s all happy.

He loves being on a horse,” Ms Williams said.

“He can trot. He’s very relaxed on the horse.”

Sue helps out the group on a Thursday afternoon.

“At some stages we can have a lot of volunteers and in the blink of an eye have not many,” she said.

“The coaches are all getting older.

“In five years’ time, it’s scary.”

Coach Coosje Dubach is the group’s president.

“There is a big need for us to have people training as a coach,” she said.

“We provide all the training.

“You need to be able to ride a horse these days. In the past you didn’t.

“We can train anyone who’s interested.

“Basically the minimum is half a day. Preferably one day a week.

“As a coach you have to make sure everyone is safe - side walkers, riders, horses.”

Ms Dubach also welcomed volunteers willing to care for the horses on weekends.

RDA Doveton volunteers lead a rider around the ring.

“People who are working but still would like to do something, they can join our roster,” she said.

“That could be only once a month if they like.

“We have morning and afternoon feeding and we check the horses out then.

“We have a few people who work and do that, mostly people with a bit of horse experience.”

There’s also a need for committee members.

“A few new young energetic people would be fantastic,” she said.

Barbara Caulfield is training to become a coach.

“I finished work to look after my family and wanted to do something during their school time and I’ve always loved horses,” she said.

“After the first few months I was approached to do the orientation to coaching.

“I’ve done that, I’ve just qualified for that, which means I can go to level one.”

Ms Caulfield’s studies have included reading books and running classes under supervision.

“I’m not working anymore but I’m very much part of a team,” she said.

“At work I used to have lunch breaks with my mates and I have that here too.

“I think it’s a really important part, that sense of community.

“I also get my kids involved.

We’re part of the feeding roster.

“I bring my kids and I make them get their hands dirty and wheelbarrow all the hay around - even when the weather’s not good and they’d rather stay at home.”

Help for special needs kids The Timmermans Method is a holistic approach to increasing the capabilities and functioning of children with special needs.

The method was originally started in 1962

by Tim and Claire Timmermans and is carried on by their son Chad Timmermans. The method now uses a combination of many different techniques to get the best results for children and their families.

Having carried on from the work of his parents, Chad is now a specialist in early childhood development, paediatric rehabilitation, and brain-injury recovery.

Aside from being a registered applied psychologist and accredited exercise physiologist, Chad has also studied many forms of paediatric therapy including INPP reflex integration, the Therasuit method, water therapy, Delacato sensory therapy, Brain-net method, nutrition for brain-injured children, vision therapy, whole body vibration, myo-fascial release, anti-spasticity therapy, early childhood intelligence, Cuevas Medek Exercises (CME) and education methods, feeding therapy, and many other strategies.

Since its founding, The Timmermans Method has worked with hundreds of brain-injured children from Australia, New Zealand, and Asian countries, with remarkable results.

"Children who could not see became able to see, read, and write," Mr Timmermans said.

"Children who could not crawl became able to walk and even run. Deaf children learned to hear and communicate verbally. Others learned to feed and dress themselves. There are some children that made it to a mainstream school education, including secondary and even university."

A charity trio will share the funds raised at next year's Take a Swing for Charity golf day.

The Settler's Run Golf and Country Club in Botanic Ridge will host the annual SEBN event on Monday 26 February.

SEBN manager Sandra George announced that Cornerstone Contact Centre, Avocare and WeCare Community Services in Dandenong North would benefit from the golf round, auctions and raffles.

She said the event was entering its ninth year and had raised more than $300,000 for local charities.

Cornerstone Contact Centre CEO Stephen Barrington said the proceeds would this time help to fund 1000 hygiene packs for the homeless.

"Basic stuff that we have in our cupboard every day," he said.

It will also pay for backpacks loaded with

stationary "so kids can go to school on an equal footing" and breakfast clubs.

"Secondary schools seem to miss out," Mr Barrington said.

So the charities will set up clubs for at least three high schools over the next 12 months.

He said students were turning up to school hungry because there was no food at home.

"That has an impact on their learning," he said.

That impact ranged from concentration to behaviour and social skills.

"We want to be able to give children a better start," he said.

Mr Barrington said Cornerstone, Avocare and We Care shared more than 40 years of experience.

He said they would be coming together monthly with other charities.

The Critical Care Unit, which became operational last week, has become home to the region’s first intensive care unit and provides a cardiac/high dependency service, along with the first catheter laboratory in this area. The unit is split into two areas of care— intensive care and cardiac/high dependency care and caters to patients who may need to be monitored very closely following major surgery or for those who have become unexpectedly very ill.

People who have experienced a cardiac event or who may require a higher level of care prior to transfer to a ward area will also receive specialised care in this new unit.

Along with the Critical Care Unit, St John of God Berwick Hospital is expanding its services to include a dedicated rehabilitation unit within its new Kangan Drive facility as well.

The unit will offer services tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient and will respond to the differing levels of physical function, depending on a patient’s health condition or their recovery needs from surgery. Focusing on orthopaedic and reconditioning rehabilitation services, these in-patient and out-patient programs aim to help people achieve maximum recovery and independence following surgery, accident or a major health condition or illness such as a stroke or cancer.

The opening of these new units means the local community will be able to access these previously unavailable services throughout Melbourne’s south-east corridor.

Dandenong Dermatology Centre has been providing dermatology care and laser therapy to the area for many years.

The centre is headed by Dr Peter Fergin, Dr Olivia Milne and Dr Stephen Gilmore.

The trio were recently joined by Dr Rebecca Nguyen.

Laser treatments are provided by dermatology and cosmetic nurse Marie Lebrasse. Marie has many years of expertise with laser treatments and techniques. She regularly updates her laser knowledge and skills and adheres to all new standards and regulations.

Dr Fergin says that with summer over, now is the perfect time to repair the freckles or pigmentation that appear on exposed skin on the face, chest and hands.

“Photo rejuvenation is one of the newest therapies in laser, and gives great results with minimal down time.

“Photo rejuvenation with radio frequency technologies applies small amounts of heat safely into the dermis leading to remodelling of collagen and elastin, which, in turn, leads to plumping of the skin.

“The epidermis also tightens giving the treated skin a smoother, more youthful appearance."

THREE … ways to save energy

What is something people don’t know about you?

This question makes me laugh! There are many things people don’t know about me, as I believe everyone needs some mystique about themselves. We don’t have to lay our souls bare on the table for everyone to view and analyse.

While people may be critical about me, often I would like people to realise that my life’s experiences have made me the person I am and what I will reveal is that I network well.

What was your most memorable moment?

Of course top of the list is the birth of my children and grandchildren. This would be followed by some of the wonderful moments in my younger life, like being a Queen’s Guide and just knowing that some things that I work behind the scenes at now brings much pleasure to many people.

What would your last meal be?

Food is subjective, but now all I want to know is that it is home grown or organic and not full of chemicals. So just plain good food, grown locally on non-contaminated land.

What do you love most about where you live?

I didn’t grow up in this area, but I love the memory of the old City of Springvale and City of Dandenong which sadly we are losing.

Working on the Noble Park Centenary from 2007, I grew to appreciate the proud history of this suburb and sadly that is being whittled away by over development and, dare I say it, sky rail!

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

I would just like to witness some good news stories ongoing. Unfortunately we are being surrounded by such sad circumstances daily that I realise I very rarely really laugh any more.

Life is so fast-paced that great moments get very quickly overshadowed and swallowed up by the next event or function and we no longer have time to sit and appreciate what we have around us and the basic things of life. If I could

What is your favourite television show?

I am sick of all these reality TV shows presently as there is no other choice on free to air TV. Maybe a variety show where you were entertained and laughed along with the cast. Bring back reruns of The Graham Kennedy show, Don Lane show and even The Midday show with some very clever skits.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

I can’t think of any off the top of my head, maybe because I have never wanted to dwell on them. There have probably been plenty of “oopsy“ moments but as they say, if we don’t make mistakes we can’t learn from them, so I can’t say I have locked any particular moments in my memory bank. Sorry to be so boring, but

that’s life like it or lump it!

At school I ... ... never really left school! I believe schools are a great environment if students and parents will give it a chance, and a safe haven for many of our students in today’s environment.

They say you never realize what you have until it’s gone so it’s the friends you make and the reunions in later years. I had my photo taken with a past governor general while decorating sponge cakes for his afternoon tea!

What ONE thing would you change about your suburb?

If we could turn back time I would reinstate all the bulldozed schools and fill them with happy students, plant the magnificent river red gums that were ripped out unceremoniously to make way for elevated rail, bulldoze all the over-sized mansions that now occupy what was great farming land - land that should have been retained to feed our growing population - and I would make sure every young family could afford a home for themselves.

Thunder ready to strike

By Nick Creely Being the underdog is a tag that Dandenong Thunder is looking to relish, as they make preparations for a return to the top flight of NPL football in 2018.

With their opening round clash against competition pacesetters, Bentleigh Greens, to be played on Thursday 22 February, the Thunder have been put through a gruelling preseason, all with the aim of representation their region with pride.

And under new coach Andy Vargas; who is bringing a fresh enthusiasm to a club renowned for its immensely strong culture; the Thunder are quietly confident they can shock teams.

"One of the reasons I wanted to take up the opportunity is because of how the club and the players operated, so it's been a challenging pre-season, because it's a long pre-season in the NPL," he said.

"There's definitely a shift in intensity, and application; it was a fantastic achievement to get the club back into the top flight of NPL, but it's another level, you're coming up against some real powerhouses in the state.

"We're coming in with a bit of an underdog tag, which is fantastic, and I think if we play with that characteristic, teams will know they're in for a competitive game, week in and week out.

"We have to have the attitude that we're playing for a final every game, and I'm lucky I have some great people around me and we're all on board and focused on the challenges ahead."

The Thunder has been fortunate to retain most of its core group; including star striker Brandon Barnes; while they have managed to pouch some players from rival clubs, such as

"At the moment, I'm happy where we're at; it's been a focused and progressive preseason, and we are just looking to get ready for the first game.

"We've added some players, and we've got

some availability still on the list to add two or three players, so we've got some aces up our sleeves.

"We're still chopping and changing, but we've maintained our core list, so we're pretty happy with how we're tracking."

The Thunder also got the exciting opportunity to test itself up against Chinese Super League powerhouse Guanghzhou R&F, with a friendly match played between the two clubs on Sunday 11 February at George Andrews Reserve.

Thunder president Adem Tehiri said it's a massive year for the club both on and off the field, who are looking to obtain as much support as they can from around the region.

"We're trying to strengthen our commercial opportunities for our major sponsors, and anybody else that comes on board with what they can provide," he said.

"We're also working alongside the Dandenong City Council in organising a long term development plan for our overall reserve and especially for our mini-roos and girls at the soccer club.

"Girls soccer is growing fast, especially in the south-east, and with the W-League, and that's one area we are working hard on.

"We want to attract more girls to play the game."

As for the club's NPL side, Tehiri explained the goals ahead of what is a landmark season for the Thunder.

"We're pretty stable at the moment, and our main focus as a club is to consolidate ourselves back into the NPL in 2018," he said.

"And we hope everyone in the surrounding Dandenong is proud of us, and gets behind us, as we embrace the community and welcome everyone to the club."

Little club is at the heart

By Gerry Carman, Buckley Ridges legend Buckley Ridges, the little club in Pultney Street that has been at the heart of grassroots cricket in the region for generations of players, has notched a score to be proud of: 90 not out.

The Bucks, or 'Ridges as the club is known, was among the founding clubs of the Dandenong District Cricket Association and expects to have a large turnout of former players and officials at its 90th anniversary celebrations at Park Oval on 17 February.

The history of the club - which could well share its name with a very successful first-class team in Sir Lanka called the Nondescripts, because of its cramped clubrooms that until recently were shared not just with the DDCA administration (which it continues to do) but with the umpires association and Dandenong District Junior Football League - is replete with high achievement.

The boys in blue have not only won seven Turf 1 or equivalent premierships since the start of the DDCA in the 1931-32 season (only Springvale South has done better, with eight T1 flags), but its top women's team won five premier (first division) flags between 1990-91 and 2002-203.

This is a proud record that cannot be matched by any club not just in the DDCA but across Victoria (and possibly Australia) because Buckley Ridges was unique in fielding both men's and women's teams through the grades to elite level long before the current vogue began. (The women subsequently went on to win five more flags as Dandenong between 2003-04 and 2012-13 and this year aligned with the Dandenong Premier [district] club.)

Buckley has also been runner-up in T1 or equivalent (the top grade was known as Premier or "A" grade until it switched to Turf 1 in 1962-63) seven times and finished third 12 times, which means a "podium" finish 26 times at the highest level - unmatched by any other DDCA club. Next best is St. Mary's with 22 top three finishes (seven T1 flags, eight runner-ups and seven third placings), followed by Springvale South with 18 (eight T1 flags, seven runner-ups and three third placings).

Buckley also has an unmatched record in winning the DDCA's T20 competition seven out of the 11 years that it has been contested.

Along the way it has also been Melbourne metropolitan champion twice - in fact, will be playing at the MCG on February 20 for the Victorian title - as well as winning the inaugural Knox Tavern eight-a-side competition that was open to all-comers.

Buckley has also had the best player in the DDCA competition (Wookey Medalist) four times in the modern era - Ian Campbell (198889), Dean Maynard (1995-96), Shane D'Rozario (2006-07) and William Butler (2008-09).

And, current Buckley champion Daniel (DJ) Watson holds two DDCA records, each an astonishing performance: the highest individual score in a grand final, 188 not out against Mordialloc in 2012-13, when rain interruptions spread his herculean effort across three days of play; and the highest score in a T20 match, 193 not out against Springvale South in 2007-08.

Buckley's wider success across all grades is remarkable given that it is not only small in numbers but is the only stand-alone club in the association in terms of its name: It does not have the advantage of carrying the name of a suburb, which has its own drawing power.

(St Mary's and St Brigid's St Louis are the other exceptions, but they have traditional links with a church/school in their respective areas.)

The little club takes its name from its first benefactor, Fred Buckley, who donated land for a ground for the club at the corner of Bloomfield Road and Isaac Road in Noble Park (now housing); he also donated land for the Noble Park Football/Cricket club in Moodermere Street.

After World War II Buckley Ridges moved first to a site in Pope's Road before settling in a shed (dubbed The Manor) near the entrance gates to Shepley Oval in Dandenong, and played on Wilson Oval, before moving to shared premises in what remains its present clubhouse.

Buckley won its first T1 flag the season World War II ended, 1945-46, with another in 1947-48, followed by the only grand final tie, against High School-RSL in 1952-53, with back-to-back flags in 1958-59 and 1959-60.

A 50-year hiatus followed and it wasn't until 2009-10 that Buckley won its next T1 flag under the captaincy of Paul "General" Franks, followed in 2012-13 under skipper Marc Calkin.

Daniel 'DJ' Watson is one of many champions to emerge out of the club. 173951 over points allocated to a player resulted in the club being ruled ineligible to contest the finals.

The fact that Buckley has not only survived the vagaries and vicissitudes of time but continues to be successful at the top level is a tremendous credit to the little community club and its dedicated "family" of members, from players to office bearers and helpers.

A lifelong passion for greyhound racing has Vickie Nolan well prepared as she begins her new role on the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club committee.

Nolan grew up with greyhound racing. Her parents, John and Mary Cohen, trained a team of greyhounds at their family home and Vickie and her twin sister were an important part of the team from a young age.

"We grew up on acreage in Rye and was always helping mum and dad train them. We used to walk them before school and after school, and used to help with everything from trialing, racing, feeding, grooming - everything really," she said.

"Back when we were growing up, it was very much a sport for hobbyists and families. We used spend afternoons with family and friends coursing down at Lang Lang, it was a great social event and a lot of fun.

"We used to go to Sandown, Cranbourne and Olympic Park a lot too. I remember com-

ing to Sandown Park in the days when the old 44 gallon drums were down below, and we'd be waiting for dad to drive us home. We'd be there with a can of raspberry soft drink and packet of chips. I have some fantastic memories from those days."

Nolan became a member at Sandown a little over 5 years ago and in that time increased her involvement in the club. She's a member of the all-female 'Shades of' syndicate which races a number of greyhounds prepared by lady trainers, and has been an enthusiastic supporter of a number of the club's major events. The opportunity to share her passion for the sport and to introduce new people to the sport via ownership was a major motivating factor in deciding to join the Board.

"My sister owned a dog called Disco Gambler. He was the runt of the litter and no one wanted him so my sister bought him with a guy from the footy club. He won over every distance, had a lot of success with him. We had a lot of good times with him because all the guys at the

Rye footy club used to come up to Sandown to bet him. There were lots of winning photos plastered over mum and dad's garage with all of us, everyone would just jump in the photo and there'd be about 20 people behind the dog.

That's an area I'm really keen to help grow, to get more syndicates and families involved.

Barker staying put Dandenong Rangers captain Lucas Barker is going nowhere for SEABL18, with the star playmaker re-signing with the club for the upcoming season.

Barker led the Rangers superbly to a SEABL grand final in 2017, in which they eventually lost in a nail biter to Mt Gambier 92-85 last September. It was a stellar year individually for the skipper, who also represented the Australian 3x3 Men's team at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup, in which his side finished with an impressive bronze in the tournament.

But on the Dandenong courts is where Barker truly shined, averaging 14.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 5.5 assists to lead from the front in a season that was so close to a championship. He is simply thrilled to be able to once again wear the green uniform with pride.

"It's always great coming back to play with a club you grew up playing for", Barker told Dandenong Basketball's website.

"I'm excited about coming back to play with an awesome bunch of guys, and to play for the great coaching staff we have here, led

by Darren Perry."

That hunger to go one step further with the Rangers in 2018 was the main driving force to getting Barker to put pen to paper next season, and hopes a fresh looking side can be the catalyst for a championship.

"After coming so close last year, I expect to be right in the mix once again", Barker said.

"We will have some new faces, but have the right mix of veterans, experienced players, and young fellas that'll make us competitive."

In other signing news for both the Men and Women sides, WNBL youngsters Kiera Rowe and Rebecca Pizzey have put pen to paper for the SEABL season, while star recruit Tayla Roberts; who has dominated the SEABL for several years; will also turn out for the Rangers in a coup after a strong WNBL season.

Eagles soar Cranbourne emerged victorious in the recent Knight's Cup, an Under 15 round robin tournament held by the Dandenong District Cricket Association.

On Sunday 4 February, the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club hosted nine other fellow DDCA clubs, with five clubs competing in each pool and playing each other in 10-over per side matches.

The weather was glorious in Melbourne on the day, and the cricket was extremely competitive, with some of the brightest young stars currently in the DDCA showcasing their big futures in the game.

The top side from each pool then played each other for the Knight's Cup, which is a well renowned junior trophy.

This year it came down to Cranbourne and Berwick Springs, with the Eagles winning comfortably by eight wickets.

Coming into the match, the Eagles and Springs won all four of their pool matches in dominant fashion, so both teams were full of momentum and ready to swing from the start.

The Springs batted first and compiled a competitive total of 3/54 of 10 overs, but the Eagles steadily chased the runs down, passing the opposition in the ninth over and with eight wickets left in the shed.

Tritt Tritt is a bit fit - and learns that experience counts

By Mick Floyd Exciting staying prospect Tritt Tritt registered an impressive victory in his city debut at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

Tritt Tritt began cleanly in his first start from the 595m boxes, however his lack of experience from the start showed as he swung wide through the first turn. Settling third out of the straight the first time, Tritt Tritt didn’t hesitate to take advantage of a gap between leaders Barcali and He Shall Fred on entering the back straight, powering to a lead he wouldn’t relinquish and scoring a determined victory in 34.39 seconds. It was his seventh victory from just 10 starts.

Trainer Brooke Ennis was delighted with her charge’s performance, not just with the time, but the manner in which he achieved it.

“I was really happy with him, being such a young dog he pushed through well. He looks like he’s going to be a nice dog,” she said.

The run came just a day after Tritt Tritt, or ‘Buckets’ as he’s known at home, turned twoyears-of-age. He burst onto the scene in November 2017 by winning his first four starts by a combined margin of 20 lengths, but despite him showing enormous potential early in his career, Ennis has been patient with her young chaser and will continue to take that approach confident that Tritt Tritt will improve in time and over more ground.

“He just lacks that little bit of pace early,” she said.

“He generally gets out well but just doesn’t have the early speed to get going so I think he’ll be better suited over the trip.

“We’ll just keep him going through his grades and slowly step him up. The 600m races are what we’re aiming for at the moment but hopefully we can get a nice stayer, he seems nice and strong.”

Ennis and her husband Jamie have enjoyed considerable success in greyhound racing, in-

cluding numerous Group 1 victories. However Thursday’s victory was particularly enjoyable for Ennis, not just because Tritt Tritt is the son of her former champion My Bro Fabio, but because Ennis was there the day he was born.

“I whelped the litter and reared him, and being out of Fabio makes it all a little bit special,” she said.

“We’ve been lucky to have a lot of success on the track, but when you do all of the work from day one it does make it a bit more special.

I like to do the breeding and rearing, it’s great to see them grow up and get to the races.”

Tritt Tritt’s emergence also continues an amazing run for owner Matthew Sheahan. A plumber by trade, Sheahan has enjoyed success as a part owner of a number of prominent Ennis chasers including TAB Melbourne Cup finalist Matt Machine and Galactic Diamond match race winner Zipping Angus.
