The annual country show season gets off to a cracking start this weekend with the 2018 Stanthorpe Show.

With the sweltering conditions we've been experiencing of late around these parts expected to moderate somewhat in time for the weekend it's a great opportunity to get out of the house and head to the Stanthorpe Showgrounds.

Our country shows are likewise an opportunity for our agricultural producers to show off their best, whether it be livestock or horticultural produce, and they're a reminder of the vital role agriculture continues to play in this region's economy - given we are home to some of the most productive farmland anywhere in Australia.

None of these events would happen without the hard slog of armies of volunteers - and the Stanthorpe Show is no different.

So much goes on behind the scenes in the lead-up, during the running and in the aftermath of our local shows, so it's important to acknowledge the role our volunteers play in making them possible.

Hats off to the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society ahead of the weekend - and to all of our region's other show organisers.

HATCHERY SOON TO OPEN

SPORTS FIELD MOWING CUT BACK

BY JEREMY SOLLARS A meat chicken hatchery at Allora capable of hatching close to a million birds a year is scheduled to be officially opened on Monday 12 February, a company newsletter has stated.

The Brisbane-based Darwalla Group is building the hatchery on Bradfield Road just east of Allora, with the site the cause of local controversy due to it being located on the Dalrymple Creek floodplain, and local concerns about the handling of an estimated 7.8 million litres of wastewater annually.

"The Allora hatchery is in its final stages of construction and the anticipation is building up for our commissioning and start up," the company's December newsletter states.

"The 19th of February will be the day the first eggs are set and first chicks to be hatched on the 12th of March.

"A major milestone was achieved (late last year) with the installation of a generator at the Allora site.

"All Darwalla Staff will be scheduled to visit the hatchery on the 23rd and 24th of January, prior to the hatchery being fully operational.

Darwalla has several breeding, hatching and feeding facilities in south-east Queensland - including on the Southern Downs - and produces meat or 'broiler' chickens for the Queensland and interstate market.

At full capacity the Allora hatchery will be capable of hatching an estimated 800,000 chicks a year.

Eggs will be incubated for 21 days and hatched day-old chicks will then be delivered to Darwalla's 'broiler farms', where depending on gender - male chicks grow faster - and size they will be grown out between 30 and 60 days before being transported to processing facilities.

GRAINX COURT COSTS: $100K AND COUNTING

BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council’s legal action against Allora’s GrainX continues to drag on and local residents continue to suffer through noise and dust impacts from the grain handling facility.

GrainX and the council are due to sit down tomorrow, Friday 2 February for an ‘alternative dispute resolution’ mediation session with the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland in a bid to avoid a fullblown court hearing.

The council has alleged GrainX is in breach of approval conditions relating to noise and landscaping and lodged court action against the company in September last year.

A specialist consultant commissioned by the council has stated in a court affidavit there is a range of physical measures GrainX could implement to reduce the noise of grain transfer from conveyors and silos on the site, after testing found the noise “significantly exceeds” acceptable levels.

But residents of Herbert Street and other nearby streets remain adamant the dust issue is glaringly missing from the council’s

court action and have detailed its impacts along with the noise - in more than a dozen individual court affidavits.

They remain critical of the efforts of MWA Environmental - the consultants engaged by the council - to measure the dust nuisance, saying dust ‘collectors’ they installed at a number of Herbert Street residences were not industry best practice, consisting of basic funnels. They claim far more accurate technology is readily available in the form of digital data collectors, like those used by consultants Parsons Brinckerhoff to measure dust levels from the Yangan quarry in 2016.

The Free Times asked the council why the dust issue had been left out of the court action against GrainX but a spokeswoman said the matter is a current legal one “and therefore detailed comment cannot be provided”.

However a report to this week’s general meeting of the council stated that “council’s environmental consultant is continuing to monitor the site for dust levels”.

“At this time, monitoring has failed to demonstrate that dust emissions exceed environmental standards,” the report stated.

GrainX at Allora. (File image) The report to councillors from the council’s planning department also states that the cost to ratepayers of court action against GrainX to date is “estimated to be around $100,000” but does not estimate the final bill.

The Free Times has also made numerous attempts to seek comment from both GrainX and MWA Environmental and no responses have been received.

Depending on the outcome of tomorrow’s court mediation session the council’s legal action is next listed for a review in the Planning and Environment Court on Thursday 22 February. ●

Sporting fields in Stanthorpe will no longer be mown by low-security female prisoners from the 'Women In Custody' program.

The Women In Custody program is based at the Numinbah Correctional Centre in the Gold Coast hinterland but locally is overseen by the 'Warwick Work Camp Community Engagement Committee'.

The Committee decided in November last year that from February this year it would scale back its mowing at Stanthorpe sports facilities - including the CF White and Sullivan Ovals - to mowing of the areas surrounding the playing fields such as spectator, clubhouse and amenity areas.

The Stanthorpe Sports Association wrote to Queensland Corrective Services Minister Mark Ryan seeking an explanation for the decision, but is yet to receive a reply.

The Free Times asked the minister's office for comment but was referred to the Corrective Services Department, with a spokesman saying, among other things, that: "community service is an important opportunity for low security prisoners to make reparation to the community and develop valuable employment skills".

The Free Times then sought comment directly from the Community Engagement Committee but our enquiry was referred back to the same departmental spokesman, who re-issued the statement above.

The Stanthorpe Sports Association applied for the Women In Custody program to mow its playing fields - at the Southern Downs Regional Council's suggestion - after a dispute with the council in late 2016 over mowing and maintenance conditions in its council lease.

Sources have suggested that as mowing the surrounds of the playing fields is a council responsibility the Women In Custody program will be saving the council money in that regard. ●

WHY FIX WHAT ISN'T BROKEN?

he Southern Downs Regional Council could be close to making a decision on the potential leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards, as industry discussion continues over the controversial proposal.

The Free Times understands local livestock agents attended a meeting with council officers and representatives of the council's 'preferred tenderer' just before Christmas.

The council announced in September last year it had selected a preferred tenderer following a call for expressions of interest earlier in 2017, but would not disclose their identity.

The Free Times has been given information relating to the operator involved - not based in Warwick - and has asked them to confirm if they are the

preferred tenderer but to date has not received any response.

What we can reveal is that agents at the meeting in December were provided with an indicative schedule of the fees the operator may charge, and they are significantly higher than those currently charged by the council - to the tune of around 50 per cent.

At present cattle vendors at the Warwick Saleyards are charged a flat rate of $8.15 per head, plus an infrastructure levy of $1 per head, and sheep vendors are charged 70 cents per head and an infrastructure levy of 30 cents per head, all inclusive of GST. The operator understood to be the preferred tenderer could charge a sliding scale of 'yard fees' based on how much cattle and sheep are sold for.

Many have also been critical of the possible move to lease out the Warwick Saleyards on the basis that it returns an annual profit, or its income at least offsets operating costs.

Warwick cattleman and vocal public critic of the leasing plan Noel McConville said this week if the plan went ahead it would "probably be a death blow for the Saleyards as producers know it to be now".

"Toowoomba and Dalby will undoubtedly be delighted as the increased fees and charges at Warwick will lead to a substantial increase in their yardings," Noel said.

Also of concern to local agents is the affiliation fee the new operator could charge, listed in their schedule as an "agent turnover fee" - meaning agents' businesses would be charged the equivalent of 15 per cent of their total annual turnover every year.

In some cases, that figure could represent the annual wages of at least one full-time employee, if not more, depending on the size of the business.

"This action by the SDRC is of no surprise to me - the councillors and their advisors made their decision to obtain a temporary monetary gain by either selling or leasing the Saleyards in early 2017 and have had no intention whatsoever to listen to producers and ratepayers and other interested parties on this very important issue.

"This has been the case in other centres such as Gracemere, Tenterfield and Casino when similar leasing schemes were adopted.

"I have been reliably informed that Emerald's yardings have increased considerably as a result of the Gracemere increases in fees and charges.

"Tenterfield and Casino have experienced similar downturns.

"They no longer have weekly sales and have changed to fortnightly yardings. One does not have to be Einstein to see the same outcome for the Warwick Saleyards (if an) outside enterprise takes control.

"Saleyard dues may initially remain the same but new fees will be introduced such as weighbridge and other charges that have been in other privatised facilities.

Transparency questioned The council has consistently stated the next step in the process is for its Saleyards Advisory Committee to make a recommendation on acceptance or otherwise of the preferred tenderer's offer.

A spokeswoman told the Free Times in December the Committee was expected to meet next in January but this has been revised to February, with no specific date yet publicly released.

Mayor Tracy Dobie has also made it clear the Warwick Saleyards are "not for sale" and councillors will have the final say over its future, and could opt to reject the tender offer and continue to have the facility directly managed by the council.

Local producers were stunned when the council released a survey seeking their views on "the future of the saleyards" in November last year - well after the moving to the 'refined tender process' with the preferred tenderer.

The council said it received around 100 survey responses but has not made them public to date.

The Saleyards Advisory Committee is partly made up of rural industry representatives whose current identities remain unclear, due to the suppression of the minutes of most of the committee's meetings last year.

The Free Times sought to obtain the minutes of several confidential meetings of the committee through Right To Information (RTI) last August but the council refused to make them public.

The Saleyards Advisory Committee first met in December 2016 when it discussed the leasing option, along with the potential demolition of the Warwick Saleyards and the building of a new $15 million facility nearby.

That initial meeting was made up of Deputy Mayor Jo McNally, Cr Rod Kelly, Les Fraser of Frasers Livestock Transport, former Saleyards management committee chair Graham Kirkland, Andrew Williams of Elders and David McIvor of McDougall and Sons.

It is unknown which of these members remain current due to the later minutes having been suppressed, but the May 2017 council general meeting minutes noted that George and Fuhrmann agent Blake Doro had been invited to join the Saleyards Advisory Committee, which replaced the former saleyards management committee.

BULLYING A 'HOT BUTTON' TOPIC

Mayor Tracy Dobie. what RANGE members and others in the community adamantly believe is freedom of speech and expression.

Cr Dobie has not been specific about the identities of her detractors, nor has she referred to specific online comments or other instances of bullying.

But RANGE group spokesman Andrew Gale believes the bumper sticker may be something which has rankled the mayor in the past, conceding it could be seen by some as "low-brow", but also defending the group's right to freedom of expression.

At least one RANGE member has been critical of the bumper sticker on the group's Facebook page, but Andrew Gale is adamant it was not produced in poor taste, is an example of "satire" and has to be seen in the

overall context of legitimate public opinion relating to the current council.

"The mayor has also made comments about 'keyboard warriors in little dark houses' active on social media locally," Andrew said.

"The term 'keyboard warrior' implies that someone is commenting anonymously or using a pseudonym - no one commenting (on the RANGE Facebook page) has been anonymous, they've all been commenting under their own name."

Others commenting on the RANGE Facebook page have pointed to repeated allegations of a bullying culture within the council workforce itself, although Cr Dobie has likewise repeatedly denied there have been any official internal bullying complaints made by council staff.

A local resident's action group has defended circulating bumper stickers poking fun at Mayor Tracy Dobie, who claims to be the victim of bullying by some in the community.

In August 2017 the Southern Downs Residents Action Group ('RANGE') printed bumper stickers with an effigy of the mayor's eyebrows and a quote, 'I don't know what it actually means'.

The quote is a reference to a comment made by the mayor at a public meeting in Stanthorpe last August called by the community to discuss the potential leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards and the council's controversial Invasive Pest Control Scheme (IPCS).

Cr Dobie made the comment in relation to a motion of no confidence in the council passed at the meeting, which followed a similar public meeting held the week before at the Freestone Memorial Hall.

The mayor has been vocal on the issue of bullying - in particular online 'cyberbullying' - in recent weeks following the suicide of The Scots PGC College boarder Amy 'Dolly' Everett in the Northern Territory in the first week of January, with Dolly's family having stated the 14 year old was the subject of merciless online bullying.

But Cr Dobie has been criticised both for appearing to be seen to be garnering personal sympathy in the wake of the Dolly tragedy, and for being over-sensitive to

engaging in online bullying - including what she claims are personal attacks on her - and she believes they are "having a negative effect on our community", describing comments as "filth".

"These people believe they can write whatever they want about other people," Cr Dobie states in her 'Mayoral Minute'.

"They do this repeatedly and their intention is to cause distress to the person they are targeting.

"The problem is the people who take this action, particularly on Facebook, don't think they are doing anything wrong.

"I am not talking here about children or teenagers. I am talking about adults: parents and grandparents who are deliberately engaging in cyber-bullying.

"I believe it is time to take a stand.

"Over the last two years I have been a target of cyber-bullying by a small number of individuals: on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

"They have persistently attacked me by making statements that are cruel and meant to hurt.

"I have ignored these people and their bullying behaviour because they have no credibility and what they say doesn't affect me or influence the decisions I make.

"But after recent events, I have come to the conclusion that by ignoring their actions I am sending a message that it is acceptable for them to behave in this disgusting manner.

"I read what they posted during the period following the death of Amy Everett.

"These people do not see themselves as bullies. They believe they are just expressing their opinions. But when they do that repeatedly and with the cruel intention to cause distress and harm to others; then they are bullies.

"I anticipate that by me bringing attention to their actions, these bullies will become

harsher in their attacks on me personally.

"Let them do so. Their bullying behaviour will be even more evident."

The mayor has vowed to take "a series of actions" in coming weeks to raise awareness about online and other bullying, leading up to a planned 'National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence' on Friday 16 March.

Mayor Tracy Dobie is very vocal at the moment on the issue of bullying, including online 'cyberbullying'.

True, it is a 'hot button' topic right now, both in this community - particularly in the wake of the suicide of Scots boarder Dolly Everett - and nationally. The mayor claims she herself has been the target of online bullies who she says have made personal attacks on her about her appearance and her stance on local issues.

The question is, to what extent are politicians - local, state and federal - 'fair game' when it comes to public commentary, online or otherwise?

And is it OK for community members - or to describe them another way, 'voters' - to poke

fun every now and then at their elected representatives?

I haven't seen any evidence locally that any line has been crossed in relation to the mayor.

There's been a bit of what might be called 'undergraduate humour' but that's been born out of a sense of frustration felt by many in this community over some of this council's actions and decisions.

Politicians need to develop a pretty thick hide given the nature of their role. We are not living in North Korea, where one can expect to be sent to a labour camp - or worse - for daring to criticise their 'Dear Leaders'. This is a democracy, and public freedom of speech and expression remains central to that democracy. â—?

Warwick Showgirl Quest entrant Jessica Jones is holding a 'colour run' fundraising event this Sunday 4 February at the Warwick Showgrounds.

The event is a five kilometre run/walk where entrants will be coloured with five different colours at five different stations throughout the course.

There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks available on the day - come as a family, group or individuals, you can walk, jog, run or mix it up.

BACK TO THE FUTURE IN OZ CRICKET If you can hit a cricket ball hard and far enough in this day and age or bowl a ball on a sixpence you don't need to audition for Eddie Maguire's "Who wants to be a Millionaire". Get yourself noticed in T20 cricket and you can find yourself an instant millionaire courtesy of the IPL auction.

Just ask Hurricanes sensation D'Arcy Short who has gone from relative ambiguity to a sort after commodity in the IPL almost overnight.

While the usual suspects will be receiving enormous pay checks for their six weeks of cricket on the sub continent, Short ($775,000 - Rajasthan Royals) is one of a number of up and coming stars who will receive a big boost to their bank balance. Another is Australian pace bowler Andrew Tye ($1.40m - Kings XI Punjab) who impressed against the Poms in the recent ODI game.

An offer of $1.86m from Kolkata Knight Riders is sure to help Chris Lynne recover from the injury that forced his withdrawl from the Aussie ODI squad and he will be banking on staying injury free. Topping the auction was Englishman Ben Stokes. A $2.4m contract from the Rajasthan Royals will go a long way towards soothing the disappointment of missing the Ashes tour. Now he needs to navigate the British legal system and ensure he gets a passport to India and not somewhere else.

It's all a little mind boggling and perhaps as some are saying, "Out of Control".

Someone who was not out of control in the past week was Roger Federer the master. There are truly not enough superlatives for this player who continues to amaze and entertain. It was difficult just as an onlooker not to be affected by the raw emotion he showed after winning major no 20 - the first man to reach that milestone.

His love of the game is as obvious as his acknowledgement of the history of the game and the work of those who have gone beefier him. A true champion in every sense of the word.

Nationally and locally sports men and women and volunteers across the country were last weekend acknowledged for their contribution to sport and to the Australian way.

While we say good luck to those who will earn the big dollars in the upcoming IPL, we congratulate recipients of Australia Day Awards for simply competing and ensuring sport continues and thrives across the nation. They are the people who ultimately allow those at the top of the tree to harvest the riches and their contribution should never be forgotten or overlooked.

MARYVALE CONDAMINE WRAP UP THIRD CARNIVAL WIN The Maryvale Condamine team are celebrating after their first win at the Australia Day Cricket Carnival in Warwick since 2010. It is the team's third Australia Day victory having also won in 2005.

It was a back to the future final to wrap up a sensational weekend of cricket as Maryvale Condamine went head to head with Bears Smalls X1 Bears have been playing in the carnival for more years than most of them care to remember were making their first final's 14 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Maryvale Condamine made it three Australia Day carnival successes after a win over Smalls Bears. Their previous wins were in 2005 and 2010. appearance in 12 years. As Captain Peter Rutledge put it, "It's not a bad result consider our ageing roster."

No surprise that the Maryvale Condamine side was heavily weighted with Bourke's, with the regulation five or six family members in the team.

A combination of a solid batting performance and some fine bowling saw Maryvale who batted first come away with comprehensive win in the final. Pat Bourke (36) top scored for Maryvale and had plenty of support. Tom Bourke contributed (30) and some lusty hitting and quick running between the wickets by Michael Bourke late in the innings set Bears Smalls a 165 run target.

It was bad news for Bears early in their innings when opening bat Smart was dismissed for a duck in after facing just four deliveries. Byrnes followed soon after and with the score at 2/5 some drastic action was required.

Chris Killorn joined opener Jason Rutledge and together they put on a tidy partnership but it was some big hitting from Jason Rutledge that sparked plenty excitement.

Rutledge smashed four sixes off one over from McConnell who the previous week in Warwick fixtures was almost unplayable.

Rutledge was dismissed by Michael Bourke but not before scoring 37 runs from just 21 runs. Unfortunately Bears could not continue the onlsaught and the bowling attack finally got the better of the batsmen.

Michael Bourke bowled well and proved economical taking three wickets. Will Gordon was also solid taking 2/16 and it was all honours to Maryvale Condamine.

The iconic Australia Day Cricket Carnival once again proved a huge success with old friends, families and regular visitors coming together to celebrate in a carnival atmosphere.

Teams from across the border, as far north as Goomeri and the Scenic Rim joined all the regular suspects.

President of the Warwick Cricket Association Michael Bourke said during the presentations that 600 players and supporters had taken part in the three day T20 carnival which also catered for a social competition for the not so serious teams.

Bourke thanked the carnival sponsors for their continuing support of the carnival which rates second behind only the famous Gold

Fields Ashes in Charters Towers.

It was a three-pete for the winners of the Social competition, Digglers who defeated Sel's XI in the final. The Grayson brothers, Luke and Mark were instrumental in Digglers victory. Mark Grayson taking a hat-trick while brother Luke remained not out 49 after batting through the20 overs.

Bourke thanked the organising committee, the club's vice-presidents and the volunteers for their help over the three day weekend.

The carnival would not be possible were it not for the hard work of a small army of volunteers.

Club secretary and Umpires Co-ordinator Greg Payne put in hours of work pulling the carnival together. Pitch Doctor, Brian Miller and his side kicks Phil Willing and Scott Young did a great job in to keep the wickets and grounds ship shape over thee three days of the carnival - no mean feat.

Manning the bar, always an important job at any Australia Day Carnival I have attended were Neil and Chris Cantwell and David Walker while Phil and Marilyn O'Brien were again on canteen duty.

Let's not forget the Umpires without whom there would be no play.

Greg Payne hustled up a posse of Umpires and despite being busier than a one armed juggler co-ordinating the weekend Payne was himself was out in the centre all weekend and along with Maurie Ryan did the final game.

No doubt after organisers take a deep breath and a week or so to recover, preparations will begin for Australia Day 2019.

Congratulations to all concerned on another successful carnival.

TOWNSEND TRIBUTE Golfers playing the Stanthorpe course will now be able take a moment to relax, consider their game and recall the contribution of David Townsend to the club when arriving at the fifth tee. Before a ball was hit on Saturday at the Stanthorpe Golf Club there was a moving ceremony held honouring the late David Townsend.

Viv Thouard led the ceremony in which a beautifully crafted iron bark bench was dedicated in memory of the late club stalwart. The ceremony was well attended by David Townsend's family friends and club members. The bench seat is located under the shelter at the fifth tee is a genuine work

of art. It is sure to be popular with players and visitors.

The 4BBB Stableford that followed the dedication ceremony attracted a bumper field and was sponsored by the RSL Golf Group.

As players returned to the clubhouse, a tied result looked inevitable until Matt and Nikki Waterworth returned a score of 46 points to take an outright win. The pair scored 24 points on the front nine which put them in a strong position. They then sealed their win coming home with 22.

A count back was required to determine the runners up. Peter Gibney and Alan Kerr got the nod with 43 points. Stan Spencer and Ian Pickering also returned 43 points but settled for the run down.

Others players featuring in the run down were Linda Kelly and Aaron Simmers (42pts) and Neta and Viv Thouard (42pts).

Trevor Ludlow collected the pin shot at three and Keith Green collected the rest at 12 and 17. The Ladies' pins went to Lyn Ludlow at three, Nikki Waterworth at 12 and Helen Jones had best approach at 17.

Pro-pins were claimed by Matt Waterworth at 1/10 and 5/14 and Luke Reardon at 9/18.

Matt Waterworth also collected the birdies nest at 14.

As members are aware annual subscriptions are now due. The 2018 fixture programme booklet is also available at the club and contains a lot of information and is well worth reading.

This week the club will hold the February monthly medal and putting competition. It is a single stroke event sponsored by Dixon Homes. There is time sheet available at the club house and tee off time is from 11.30 am.

Players are reminded to be at the clubhouse at least 20 minutes prior to their tee time.

THREE BUSY DAYS ON THE RANGE It was a busy three days of competition on the Bosnjak Range as shooters took advantage of the wide ranging program over the long weekend with something to suit everyone.

The Australia Day Practical Match, which involves handgun, rifle and shotgun timed events held by was well supported.

The revolver competition was won by Glen Holmes who outscored Tom Donald and Dan McCosker.

Peter Russell took the honours in the Pistol shoot ahead of Max McDonald and Wal Shepherd.

In Saturday's competition Richard White scored best in the Service Pistol Centrefire category. Finishing in second place was Wal Shepherd while Michael Dudgeon rounded out the placings.

Monika White won the Rimfire event out shooting Tom Donald and Peter Russell.

It was Ray Dudgeon who was on song in the Benchrest Rimfire relegating Wal Shepherd and Ross Jackson to the minor placings.

Ross Jackson turned the tables on the field in the Sporting clays with a win over Terry Fairbanks and Tom Donald.

Sunday's results could be considered a "Whitewash". Both Service Pistols events went to the White family.

It was a win to Monika White in the Rimfire event outscoring Lynne Shepherd and Ray Dudgeon.Not to be outdone it was Richard White who tasted success in the Centrefire. Scott Cobon heads into the staging area to prepare to ditch his bike and start the run leg after completing five laps of the big circuit in the Stanthorpe Australia Day Triathlon. and the Apple and Grape Mt Marlay Fun Run on March 3. (Not sure how much fun it is running up Mt Marlay but I can attest to it being a good event).

Another classic Australia Day feature is the Camille Cantrel Classic swim relay event.

The relay event is based on consistency with team elimination based on how close they can swim to their original time. The 2018 relay saw a mix of young and old competing in the

six teams.

Victors were the Cobon Team of Scott, Susie and Nicola Cobon who in the final were a mere 37 secs off their first swim time.

Stanthorpe Swim School's Gail Smail said the event is unlike any other relay with an emphasis on consistency.

HEAT AND LONG WEEKEND KEEP NUMBERS DOWN With another day of extreme heat there was only a small turnout for last week's Association Croquet games. Joy Newman and Val Shephard played Grace Howard and Effey Russell. Val Shepherd has had only limited experience in this form of the game and played well. She scored a good break of three consecutive hoops also making several good hoop shots.

Despite her good form honours went to Howard and Russell with an overall win of 22-15.

Andrea Denkewitz and Carol Verwey played a close singles game. Both players had good breaks in the game but it was Denekwitz who came away with a win in the game. The final score 26-18 Gateball numbers also fell victim to the looming long weekend and hot conditions.

Andrea Denkewitz and Grace Howard took on Margaret Dickenson, John Draper and Joy Newman.

GOOD CONDITIONS, GOOD NUMBERS, GOOD GOLF Ideal conditions and a long weekend were a perfect recipe for another great field to enjoy Sunday Sporters in Stanthorpe. Ray Thorn claimed a win with another regular Sporter Angelo Maugeri laying claim to the runner's up spot. It was Paul Armstrong who returned the Best Gross of the round and also claimed the Pro Pin. The Run-downs went to John Rawlings and Marg Locke. Mark Lynam nailed the Pin Shot on the third. Not satisfied with their golfing results Angelo Maugeri and John Rawlings also took home a meat tray each. With another long weekend ahead and plenty of visitors, friends and relatives back in town for the Stanthorpe Show, Sporters organisers are hoping for another good roll up on Sunday with tee off at the usual time of 7.30-8.00am.

FIERCE COMPEITTION OF PERFECT GREENS A keen group of Golf Croquet enthusiasts enjoyed some fierce completion last weekend on the smooth and very green greens in Stanthorpe. First to victory was Justin Liddy (13) who scored some well-placed long shots, against the opposing team of Elaine Brown (4) and Sharyn Roser (5). The combination of Di Wren (8) and Shirley Page (5) proved too strong for Bev Sullivan (6)in their game.

In the next shortened games, Shirley Page (4) teamed up with Justin Liddy only to be narrowly beaten By Di Wren who was the first to score the total of seven.

In the remaining game Elaine Brown had a narrow win over 7.Bev Sullivan (4) and Sharyn Roser (2)

TRI-ATHALON SUCCESS The Australia Day Triathlon in Stanthorpe once again proved to be a great draw card with over 100 competitors and plenty of supporters up early on Australia Day for the event.

Dan Cuthbert, event organiser said the numbers who lined up were a far cry from the handful of nominations received early in the week; but as seems to be the norm today, a flurry of late entries were received and numbers swelled to 120.

With events to suit all ages and levels of fitness organisers were pleased to see 23 children among eh starters.

The event included a swim leg in the Stanthorpe pool, a bike ride where some of the participants found the going up the McGlew Street hill past the Stanthorpe High School tough going for the five circuits and finished with a run along Quartpot Creek.

Stanthorpe Police officer Dan O'Dea was on hand with the speed gun and the fastest time clocked down the McGlew Street stretch was a touch over 44klm/hour.

While finishing rather than winning was the main aim of many of the competitors there were some standout performances.

The Open Men's was taken out by B Butler in a time of 37.25. The Open Ladies winner was J Costanzo (48.58). The popular team's event went to thee Gaskell-Kay group (38.55).

The Under 12 Girls event was won by E Petrie (31.10); the Under 12 boy's winner A Waterworth (24.00). Winner of the Under 12 Duathalon was R Charles (15.39).

Many of those who took part in the triathlon are expected to line up in a few weeks for "That Dam Ride" on February 25
