From aiding fellow men with their mental health to building shelters for native wildlife, it’s no wonder Les Jacobs was named 2018 Cardinia Shire Senior Citizen of the Year. The Bunurong Men’s Shed Pakenham’s president is renowned for having a way with people. His work through the Men’s Shed has not only given Mr Jacobs a way of giving to the community, but has also been said to have saved a few lives. As he put it during the shed’s fifth birthday celebrations in October, the group “is more than just fixing furniture”. “We’re very much focused on men’s health, looking after one another,” Mr Jacobs said, adding that the group prides itself on the ability to discuss and promote health and wellbeing without “shoving it down members’ throats”. Currently operating out of Meadowvale Retirement Village, the shed’s informal setting plays a big role in offering comfortable spaces for chats and a work area where men can gather without feeling any pressure to open up. Mr Jacobs said when men worked together, they started talking - it just came naturally. The success of the environment Mr Jacob has been instrumental in developing speaks for itself. “Two guys have said they no longer feel suicidal. That’s no small feat,” Mr Jacobs said. Men’s shed members aren’t the only ones to benefit from Mr Jacobs’ bright ideas. Mr Jacobs and his men’s shed members have made ramps to assist older residents who struggle to climb stairs, possum and bird boxes to protect native wildlife, and wooden training horses for Riding with the Disabled. It’s this service to the men’s shed and greater area that has seen Mr Jacobs receive the prestigious award. It may have been the community’s way of saying thankyou, but to Mr Jacobs, it was the community who needed thanking. “I’ve had success and pleasure doing these things for the community,” he said. “I do don’t it for the recognition; I just do what I do.”
