IS CODEINE THE NEW DRUG TIDE?

BY MARGARET MACCOLL About 10 people a week face charges on illicit drug-related issues in Noosa.

From today codeine can no longer be obtained without a prescription from a chemist and already thefts of codeine have gained the attention of Noosa Heads Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

Noosa Heads CIB Detective Sergeant Tim Byrnes said codeine was stolen during three unsolved break-ins late last year at pharmacies at Sunrise Beach and Marcoola.

But by far the drug causing most police concern in Noosa is ice while others in use locally include cocaine, the party drug ecstacy, cannabis and to a lesser degree heroin.

"It's naive to think you can eliminate drug use, however, I believe that compared to some other regions throughout the State the Noosa region has a lower incidence of drug associated crime", he said.

According to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation crystal methamphetamine or ice is very addictive, can make people feel

more alert and confident and stay awake for days at a time. There is no safe level of the drug often made in backyard labs in varying levels of purity and it affects everyone differently. Frequent ice use can cause psychosis, aggressive and violent behaviour and long-term effects include weight loss, trouble concentrating and sleeping, anxiety, depression, violence, heart and kidney problems and increased risk of stroke.

Det Sgt Byrnes described ice as "a scourge in any community".

"There's a clear connection between the use of ice and violent tendencies of users and because of the drug's addictive nature users are committing crimes to fund their drug habits," he said. "I would estimate at least a third of all crime has some connection with illicit drug use. When we respond to violent crimes we often find illicit drug use as a factor. Many serious violent crimes investigated by police often have underlying drug issues present."

Ice users are found in every regional area and all walks of life from teenagers to

mature citizens and across a broad range of occupational groups.

"Drugs impact on people's lives in so many negative ways," he said.

"Any family who has an ice addict would know how destructive ice can be, not only for the user but those close to them. For rehabilitation to occur there has to be a real concerted effort. We find the use of illicit drugs can lead to mental health issues and the deterioration of mental health creates complex problems. And mental health issues can be exacerbated by illicit drug use."

Det Sgt Byrnes said the Sunshine Coast CIB targeted drug suppliers, working in collaboration with other local, state and federal law enforcement bodies to achieve their goals.

He encourages any local residents with information in relation to illicit drug supply and use to contact CrimeStoppers on 1 800 333 000, where they can pass on information, anonymously if they so wish.

Drug offences have almost tripled from about 200 cases in 1997-98 to almost 590 cases in 2015-'16, before dropping to about 490 in the latest financial year.

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Filming starts this week as part of a project developed by Noosa Community Dance Artist Gail Hewton to make dance a more accepted domain for older people and to showcase their talents, abilities and contributions.

The project titled 'In a Different Space' and with funding from Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) will include a film, which Gail plans to submit to several film and dance festivals, and a photographic collection.

Among her participants are lifelong dancers Jack Floyd, 101, and Jacqueline B’Nay known as Jonny, 92.

“Dance is most often seen as the domain of the young and it’s time such perceptions and expectations are changed - dance is possible for everyone including older people and those with mobility restrictions and issues,” Gail said.

“The histories, contributions, abilities, talents, personalities, creative flair and value of older people are often invisible, undervalued and overlooked.”

Performing as Floyd and B’Nay, Jack and Jonny were the highest paid dancers in the

UK post WWII and have a rich history to tell.

“We danced with Judy Garland, Micky Rooney, Danny Kaye and the Jackson 5,” Jonny said. “We worked with them when Michael was a little boy but even then he stole the show.”

Jonny started dancing as a four-year-old.

She studied ballet with Madam Espinosa in London before taking up acrobatics and combined the two during a sister act she performed during WWII in England.

Jack’s career began in the 1930s with a tap dancing act he performed with his father.

“He wanted me to learn to dance. I wasn’t that keen,” Jack said. But after he lost part of a finger in a factory job he found he was quite good at tap dancing.

During the war Jack spent six years with the AIF based in Crete and Libya but when the war ended he found there was no entertainment work in Australia so he headed for London, putting an ad in the paper for a dance partner.

Jonny replied.

“We danced all around the world,” Jack said. “King George VI and Queen Elizabeth came especially to see us.

“I think we’d do exactly the same thing

In the 1950s Jack brought Jonny to Australia where they continued to perform, finding the introduction of television forced then to alter their style to suit a small studio.

They retired from performance in 1957 and opened the Floyd and B’nay School of Dance, turning out many successful dancers.

The couple are excited to be involved in Gail’s project which involves filming of participants in places including a theatre and a bath which hold significance to them.

as a dancer, choreographer, educator and producer and five years ago established RIPE Dance (because dance Really Is Possible for Everyone), working with oversixties. hey call it the George Bass Marathon, and it is rated the toughest surf boat race in the world; seven unforgettable days of rowing. Seven days of rowing on the ocean in an open surf boat.

Now for the first time in the clubs proud history of boat racing, the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club entered the George Bass Marathon. Despite not finishing in the top three, they finished with what boat sweep Shane Rattovich described as a truly outstanding performance.

"For a crew of first timers it was a great effort they did their club proud; and when you considering they are a crew of veterans with an average age of 55 years, it makes their performance one to remember."

Shane, who is a former old boy of Noosa now living in New Zealand, returned to his old club to take part and in doing so took his place in the crew as sweep. The crew for each days racing would consist of the sweep and four rowers.

"This year 2018 with the Noosa Surf club celebrating its 90th year of service to the community, it was indeed fitting that this team of boatmen accepted this almighty challenge to participate in what can only be described as the toughest event of all," said Noosa Governor John Little.

The total team involvement consisted of a sweep, eight

rowers, support team of two plus helpers.

In the information brochure it was described as, "an event where personal challengers are met and lifelong friendships are formed as part of the George Bass Marathon family."

The preparation for the crew known as the Condors, took months of training; not only rowing but also road work and weights. This was necessary for not only body fitness but also to develop a mental attitude that would prepare them to cope with anything that mother nature could throw at them; heat, rain, sunburn, mountainous seas, blue bottles and fatigue.

"With the possibility of being confronted with such, a positive and tough mental attitude is of the utmost importance," said the sweep.

rowers of the day; on board they also carry extra food and water. The support rowers may be changed around as many times as required.

"Despite being listed as a marathon the changeover of crewman enables us to row at almost race pace. This however only serves to add to the toughness of the event," said Steve Hatton, "a marathon at race pace."

When a changeover is called by the sweep, the duty boat is positioned some 100 meters to the front and the relief rowers' drop into the water. As the surf boat reaches them, those to be relieved leave the boat, slide into the water and assist their relief to pull themselves aboard. "On days 1, 5, and 7 a total of eight rowers can be used and on the other days six," explained rower Steve Hatton.

Normally once practiced it was simple. However on day 2, a huge problem surfaced. Blue Bottles.

"Big clusters of them," said Mick Curwen, "and they were big and their tentacles were long; not like the little ones we see at home." While Noosa relief rower Gerard Broersen was floating waiting for their boat he was stung and as he changed with John Jenkins, Jenkins was also hit by the long tentacles. "Not a happy scenario," said Mick, ''but when you do the Marathon these things happen." ''Day 3 the ignition switch on our support boat snapped," said skipper Steve Freckelton, "so a changeover was not possible. The same crew rowed the full 22kl," Then on day 5 Mother Nature presented another problem when a rather large shark surfaced next to the boat and stayed with them for some distance. ''It came as a real shock," said Steve Porter. "One minute all was well the next there it was, right next to the boat. However this time we were lucky because there were no rowers in the water waiting for a change over."

The support crew for Noosa was Steve Freckelton and Joel Tweedy and in the words of rower Steve Hatton, "Their role as our support team was vital and it was spot on; we couldn't have asked for better."

Then after seven days it is all over. ''The blisters are counted, the sharks are gone Blue Bottle scars remain and the fatigue slowly begins to fade; it's time for the journey home," said stroke Chris Beaufort.

When asked would they return in two years, they all looked at one another and in typically Aussie fashion, our Noosa Condors answering with a laugh, "My bloody oath mate, we're going back; this is just the start" Speaking on behalf of all team members Mick Curwen added. "To all of those who supported our fund raising raffles and groups who stepped forward as sponsors, you made our success possible. We can't thank you enough."

Like all major sporting events the Marathon has had its ups and downs. However "in 1986 the Commonwealth Bank came to the party with a contribution of $20,000; then two years later the entries for the race reached 26. Then in 1990 a race budget of $400,000 was achieved and a record 38 crews heard the starters' gun: then in the late 90s 11 female crews also took part and surf ski competitors made their appearance."

We now live in an era where pride tradition and loyalty is being slowly eradicated. So to our Noosa Condors; Jenko, Haddo, Mickey, Scruffy, Chris, Gerrard, Jingles, Wazza and Ratto, your loyalty goes back many seasons, your pride is beyond question and your belief in tradition (69 years of boats in Noosa) goes without saying. Where did it all start? The concept for this event came into being when the early explorer Surgeon Commander George Bass in 1797, took a boat crew of six rowers to explore and chart sections of the East Coast of Australia.

Little did he realise that 178 yrs. later(in 1975) twelve surf boats rowed by Australian lifesaving, plus a crew from Atlantic College in Wales, would use his charted course as the bases for a surf boat race; a race to both honor his name and commemorate his achievement., It was in 1974 that it became the brain child of Bega newspaper editor Curly Annabel. "However on discussing the concept with friends they thought he was mad; as a result no support was forth coming. It wasn't until some months later that NSW Secretary and Cronulla boat sweep legend Nick Dixon took up the cause and the challenge. The rest is now history." ''Held every second year with a New Years Eve start, the race commences at Batemans Bat and finishers at Eden," said Rattovich. "For each of the seven days the distance covered is different; first leg being 27kl,and the following six being 19, 22, 24,35 (the longest leg), 27 and the final leg into Eden 22kl.

Each day we start the race in deep water between markers at the back of the surf break. The finish line would also be between markers beyond the break at the allocated beach."

After leaving Batemans Bay they have nightly stop overs and their starting beaches for the next six days were; Moruya, Coila Beach,Narooma, Bermagui,Tathra and Merimbula.The finish line would be Aslings Beach Eden.

For the race each crew is covered by a support boat and the role of this craft is of the utmost importance. Each boat is manned by crew of two Noosa club mates plus the relief

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Junction’s successful business Lexis English may be forced to shift unless it can find a suitable location to meet the needs of its international students.

General manager Ian Pratt said the school, which teaches English, had enrolments of about 2000 international students annually and injected about $20 million a year into Noosa’s economy.

“There’s no building stock available.

There’s been no development in the Junction since the '70s and '80s,” he said.

“You can’t put international students in 40-year-old buildings.”

Ian said the school needed a modern, 1000 square metre space and were looking at all options but under the council’s current planning scheme building something was unlikely.

Ian said the school had been in talks with council.

He said while Lexis wasn’t ready to pull the plug from its headquarters in Noosa, it needed to make a decision soon on its future.

Students come to the school mostly from Western Europe, but last year 100 nationalities were enrolled to study and they stayed in the Noosa area.

Established in 2004 as an English language school in Noosa Junction, Lexis has grown with five locations in Australia and three in Asia, training more than 8000 students annually. ●

Year 11 student Lola Toetzke and Prep student Emely Weiler are not related but do have two things in common - both were welcomed as new students on the first day of school at St Andrew's Anglican College, and both originate from Germany.

Emely relocated with her family from Germany in late 2016 and Lola is on a sixmonth exchange and staying with a host family, touched down in Australia just this week.

"I am excited to meet my teacher and my classmates, to make new friends and play at the school playground," Emely said.

Emely is already loving the beautiful beaches, sun and blue skies, as well as many different animals she has seen at Australia Zoo and in her own backyard.

"I can't wait to learn about writing, reading, nature and science at Prep," she said.

Lola said she was looking forward to meeting her new peers and familiarising herself with the area and Australian lifestyle.

"I'm most excited to get to know the school; how it works and its culture," she said.

THEY ALL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME The Clare family wanted a lifestyle change when they set off from Bolton in England about a decade ago for Australia and they found it in Noosa.

They travelled right around the country before discovering the perfect destination at Peregian Beach.

“It’s a million miles away from Bolton.

It traditionally has cotton mills because it rains so much,” Yvonne said.

On Australia Day Yvonne Clare became the last one in her family to gain citizenship, having missed out two years before when she went home to visit her sick mother while the rest of the family pledged their allegiance.

Siya Prakash was very excited to see her mother, Sini, obtain citizenship as she and her father Moses already have.

Siya and Yvonne joined 21 other people from the UK, Germany, Brazil, India and the United States who became Australian citizens.

Also among them were Anthony and Aine who came to Noosa in 1994 backpacking as boyfriend and girlfriend.

“She always wanted to come back,” Anthony said of his now wife, so the couple and their two children now call Australia home.

The citizenship ceremony was attended by family and friends and presided over by Mayor Tony Wellington. ●

SOFTBALL’S LOCAL LEGEND Thirteen years ago Richard Wakeham was running a panel beating business but when his youngest son started playing softball it changed his life in unexpected ways.

He made the Queensland team and seeing them train Richard found out the local players weren’t being taught the same technical skills needed to excel.

So he started coaching them himself and the results speak for themselves, with several Noosa players now in state and national teams.

Richard is now president of the Noosa District Softball Association. He spends Monday to Thursday afternoons training young players who travel from across the shire and further to participate.

Friday afternoons he trains the upper leagues, Saturdays and Sundays are also taken up with softball and once a month he runs an Academy class.

Why does he do it?

“I just love the kids,” Richard said.

This week Drysdale Funerals selected Richard as their first Local Legend, an initiative they began this year to recognise an exception member of the community.

Richard was nominated to be a local legend by a mother of one of the players.

Music workshops are a great way to better health.

On Monday Drysdale Funerals local managers of Nambour and Noosa Julie Priddle and Lisa Stanners presented Richard with a $1000 cheque for himself which he aims to use to attend the national competition and a $1000

for the club.

Lisa said it was heartening to recognise someone who didn’t seek the limelight and was directing children toward an activity to make a positive difference in their lives. ●

Soldier Songs, a program developed in the US by father and son musicians Kevin and Dustin Welch is now helping defence force serving and ex-serving men and women in Noosa heal from trauma through music.

National program director Tasha Lawton said the program was initiated after Kevin discovered how much veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury improved.

“He could see an improvement in their mental capacity. They came off medication and were less violent,” she said. “They were telling stories through songs and starting to heal.”

The program, run by volunteer instructors, operated last year at Walton Guitars, led by guitar teacher Arron Bool.

A group being led by Barleyshakes frontman Alan Kelly is now looking for participants to be involved.

HIGHEST HONOUR GOES TO EVONNE In her tennis career Noosa Heads resident Evonne Goolagong-Cawley was twice ranked the number one player in the world, won 92 pro tournaments, was a finalist in 18 Grand Slam events winning Wimbledon twice, the Australian Open four times, the French Open once and was runner up four years in succession at the US Open. She represented Australia seven times in the Fed Cup winning in 1971, '73 and '74 and was Australia's Fed Cup Captain from 2002-'04.

On Friday she added a Companion of the Order of Australia, the nation's highest honour, to her long list of credits which include an MBE, AO, Australian of the Year and Australian Sportsman of the Year and the IOC Women and Sport Trophy for her services in those fields.

She was recognised with an AC for her services to the game as a player and ambassador, and her work as a role model and advocate for young Indigenous Australians.

Since 2005, Evonne has run the Goolagong National Development Camp for Indigenous girls and boys. Using tennis as a vehicle to promote better health, education and employment, the program has awarded school scholarships, produced university

Since 2012, under the auspices of the Evonne Goolagong Foundation and in conjunction with the Australian Government, the Dream, Believe, Learn, Achieve program has conducted Tennis Come and Try Days nationwide giving access to Goolagong State Development Camps which in turn feed into the GNDC. ●

AWARD A PRIVATE CELEBRATION

BY MARGARET MACCOLL It wasn’t the welcome he expected when Noel Playford turned up to the Noosa Australia Day celebrations on Gympie Terrace to discover the citizenship ceremony wasn’t there and there was no official recognition of local Australia Day Honours recipients.

The former Noosa mayor said he celebrated with family and friends after being recognised in the honours list with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant services to local government in Queensland and to the community.

Noel said he attributed his acknowledgement largely to leading the Free Noosa campaign to deamalgamation and the outcomes achieved over the past 20 years working as chairman of both Local Government Mutual and WorkCare, in all cases working as part of a team.

He said Noosa Council was now in a better financial position than the majority of councils in Queensland, sustainable into the future and in a better able to manage development in a way Noosa could maintain its quality of life.

“Instead of feeling they were part of a very large bureaucracy in the Sunshine Coast Council people feel they are listened to, are closer to their elected members and can influence

Noel said he and wife Diana had moved from Noosa Shire to Raby Bay to help out with their three grandchildren but he missed his Tewantin house overlooking the river and the couple continue “to spend as much time as they can up here”. ●

with Cherry Bright

Name: Cherry Bright What is your occupation?

I am the President of the Majestic Theatre Pomona where I am organising some fabulous events for 2018 including regular silent films on Pomona Market Day, Valentines Day with Andrea Kirwin and Tappas and the Pomona Music Muster.

We have introduced 'Cheeky Tuesdays' for groups of 20 where we show a silent movie which is followed by an old fashioned sing-a-long around the piano.

In my spare time I teach Ukuleke. I have taught over 200 people how to play ukulele since I started 2014. It's a hoot.

I love performing with the Cherry Ripes Musical comedy duo. We perform at festivals, concerts, shows and have just started to do children's parties. We have a ball getting the audience involved and having fun.

Drinking alcohol and wasting too many brain cells. So glad I gave up two years ago and getting my brain back.

A delicious vegan curry..

Taking my own show on tour and singing all the songs I have written since giving up drinking.

What is the most important thing in your life?

Several things: 1. Getting the Majestic Theatre in Pomona

up and running successfully; 2. Seeing my 33 year old daughter happy in her life; 3. Keeping healthy with a clean plant based diet; and 4. Singing and entertaining with humour and a message for people to take home to think about.

GUIDE DOG FOR THE BLIND DOG For decades guide dogs have been helping blind humans navigate their world, so it makes sense they could do the same for their own species.

And that’s exactly what has happened since Maureen and Vic Jakes of Cooroy Mountain brought home a Labrador puppy named Abbi a year ago when their dog, Pippa, then 7, began losing her sight.

Family friend Helen Lawson said the much-loved family pet was diagnosed by a specialist veterinarian with a genetic condition, generalised progressive retinal atrophy.

The family was told surgery was not an option and she would be blind within 12 months.

“Although it was clear that Pippa was bumping into objects more frequently as her sight deteriorated, her instincts, guided by sound and smell, helped her navigate around her familiar surroundings and even find her bright yellow ball,” she said.

The couple decided a companion would enhance Pippa’s quality of life and in searching for one of similar size and breed they found Abbi.

Helen said the pair hit it off straight away with Pippa accepting the newcomer within a week while letting her know the yellow ball was hers alone.

Abbi will fetch balls though and even lies on her back allowing Pippa to take the ball from her mouth, she said.

Abbi has taken on the role of protector

and constant companion.

“Abbi and Pippa walk shoulder to shoulder when coming down the stairs, and while the pair are playing outside, Pippa is aware of Abbi’s nearness,” Helen said.

“Abbi accompanies Pippa when she moves to a favoured spot for a quiet rest, and then again later for a cooler stretch out on the kitchen tiles or to the upstairs office.

“Initially, the young puppy tried to muscle in on Pippa’s food bowl but she quickly became protective and instead, guarding it for Pippa became the norm.

Abbi now clears up any crumbs only after Pippa has finished.”

Helen said the family had identified some of the established communication shared between the dogs. When Abbie adopts a certain stance and wags her tail Pippa will move toward her, she said.

Abbi has also alerted Maureen and Vic to snakes outside the house through her alert body stance and refusal to venture past the door.

Helen said despite Pippa’s blindness she still managed to navigate the family property through her senses, familiarity and her understanding of the meaning of human commands such as 'careful’ enabling her to accompany the family while walking offleash on their morning outings around their acreage property.

Helen said “adding their guide dog to a blind dog had been a marvellous and successful venture” for them all. ●

TOGETHER, CHANGE CAN BE MADE When I’m out and about, people commonly ask: ‘How can an independent MP effect change?’ Good question and I’m excited and looking forward to sharing how over the coming months we together can tackle some of Noosa’s challenges. It’s the collective effort that can most effectively identify issues, develop initiatives and help find solutions.

On the whiteboard back at the electoral office is a simple statement - ’How We Can’.

It’s a little over six weeks since our small team occupied the office at Noosa Civic.

It’s been hectic, invigorating and humbling all at once. A big thankyou to everyone for your overwhelming support, especially to the generous ‘shares’ from our amazing artists whose brilliant works are on display, showcasing Noosa’s spirit, intent and reminders of what is most important.

Among the hundreds of emails and the constant stream of people calling there are clear and serious challenges expressed.

People often find it hard to negotiate the confusing and at times frustrating processes of government agencies. The most difficult cases are those already in a legal process as we are not able to be involved. At these times at least we can offer a human face to what can seem a mechanical process.

Some residents may be confused about whether their issue is the responsibility of Noosa Council or whether it is a state or federal matter. Unfortunately, State MPs can’t get involved at other levels of government and even Ministers are unable to interfere in these other processes unless

they involve state laws and regulations. Rest assured, here at the office we will always assist and refer you to the appropriate level of government, and let you know who the contacts are.

Other questions raised have concerned the State Government’s role in our community. The state receives funding from its own sources and federal taxes to provide and maintain state assets such as schools, main roads, health, infrastructure, services and programs. As a state member I take your collective voice into the discussion about what is to be funded and what policies and legislation Queensland should pursue.

Here in Noosa, our office researches, studies and prepares positions on those community issues that has been identified as a priority for funding. As you can imagine, every MP is advocating on behalf of their community, so our ‘Noosa axe’ must always remain sharp. For individual issues, I work through the relevant departments and at times the minister, to discuss how situations can be addressed, and then we work through the process.

The hot election topics including Beckman’s Road and the TAFE campus will be reported on after I meet with the relevant ministers in Brisbane during the first sitting of parliament, which isn’t far away. Other issues brought forward since then are either in progress, gathering information or tagged for research and community discussion through the pilot Noosa 360 project.

DANGER OF DOGS We have read on too many occasions of dog attacks on our beautiful beaches and within our wonderful shire. Unfortunately, on Australia Day at approximately 9.10 at Sunshine Beach, we became another of these statistics when Reggie our Cavalier King Charles puppy of six months was set upon by a black and white English Bull Terrier (or very similar looking). As this dog was taken off the lead, it immediately pounced on Reggie grabbing him by the right side of his neck in literally a death grip. As Reggie started to lose consciousness, we managed to get this dog to release him. The person with this dog, who spoke with a heavy German/Austrian accent denied ownership saying it belonged to a friend. He admitted that this dog was unregistered but was only a puppy of 10 months.

We wonder if this dog was learning the art of attack. We are so fortunate that Reggie wasn't shaken by the neck or crushed. He would not be alive if this had happened. We are deeply and eternally grateful to all those wonderful people who offered assistance and especially to the lady that cuddled Reggie in her towel.

This special person took photos of both dog and man so may I please ask if she can send them to this newspaper or via Cavalier Sunshine Coast Facebook page or Noosa Dogs Facebook page. We need to identify this dog before it kills a beloved pet, or maybe it could be a child next time.

DEMOCRACY AT WORK Further explaining the events reported in the article, 'Protest vote causes ripples' (Noosa Today, 25 January), my vote in council not to defend a legal challenge to an earlier council decision to close down a swim school was neither a protest vote nor a challenge to democratic process.

I cast a legitimate vote upholding my right as a councillor not to support a motion put before council, a motion I disagreed with.

This vote was consistent with my earlier objection to a narrowly won council decision to close the swim school, a decision I believed was unfair because it did not allow all relevant evidence to be considered.

Debating and voting are all part of a democratic process in which opposing views are encouraged to be aired and pursued, not stifled.

I accept and respect the ultimate decision of council to defend the appeal, but I do not agree with it because I believe the original decision to allow further evidence was wrong.

That's democracy at work.

NBN SUPER-SIZED This week we received notification of the proposal for NBN fixed wireless facilities in our area, Weyba Downs. Similar facilities are also proposed for Verrierdale and Doonan but it appears that in Weyba Downs we'll be getting the super-sized version.

It could be assumed that NBN Co has decided to accelerate its roll-out as its deadline looms by using fixed wireless systems in areas where there is no good reason for not rolling out cabled installations.

But first to the proposed development in Weyba Downs.

The tower will be within the boundary of 22 Wills Road. It will not be a typical monopole type arrangement but a 'lattice' tower, like a TV station broadcast tower. Why? Because the proposed tower is 50m tall. Yes, you read right. Fifty. Metres.

To put that in a scaleable perspective that's roughly equivalent in height to a 15-storey building. The tallest thing in the area right now would be the occasional tree of about 15m.

Now, I'll make it clear, I don't believe anyone in the area is anti-NBN. We presently suffer with truly appalling ADSL1 connections that demonstrate just how backwards our nation is with regional infrastructure.

This is about the appropriate facilities for a given situation and a 50m tower in a near flat area is just absurd and obscene in equal measure.

This tower will be visible literally for kilometres around, from the lake and in fact likely from the other side of the lake!

It will have a totally unacceptable impact on the visual amenity of a truly beautiful area.

Now here's what is perhaps one of the most absurd aspects of this.

To build the tower in the proposed location NBN Co will have to run high quality cable down Eumarella Road then turn right into Wills Road just as Eumarella transitions to a residential section. After travelling 250m down Wills Road it will then head back roughly to the west for 300 or so metres before travelling 50m up the tower.

This same length of cable would extend more than halfway down the residential section of Eumarella Road or Charlotte Drive.

Point being if they are running new cable into the tower it would likely be cheaper, although slower, to run cable around the streets and connect homes the right way!

I won't even go into the potential EMR risks of having a high-power broadcast tower that will be blasting out 24/7 in such close proximity to residential properties.

I believe that this proposal is not about deploying the best and most appropriate service for the area or the community or the environment.

It is about NBN Co meeting their dead-

lines. These towers must be rejected and our small communities must receive NBN by wire. If NBN Co cannot provide this then the existing exchange and lines should be upgraded to good quality ADSL2.

LACK OF EDUCATION It seems that Lexis English, one of Noosa's oldest (1989) and pre-eminent educational institutions, may be on the verge of making a decision to leave the shire for another location. Apparently a key reason is that zoning limitations prevent the provision of appropriate accommodation that would enable it to effectively operate. If Noosa does lose this business, it will be a severe blow and a discredit to a community that has long talked about diversifying its economy without having noteworthy success in doing so.

Lexis English, which each year teaches the intricacies of the English language to thousands of young people from overseas (2400 last year alone), is just the type of clean, green, low impact, export-oriented business that suits Noosa so well. Yet, in a place where sustainability is a buzzword - and where the establishment an Institute of Sustainability is being investigated by Noosa Council, it appears councillors are unable to establish the basic building blocks which would make economic diversity and sustainability possible.

The council's incapacity to create suitable conditions for larger businesses like Lexis English, together with its imposition of often draconian and unreasonable limitations on small business, demonstrate a remarkable reluctance to negotiate win-win solutions in favour of saying 'no'..

This Playford-Wellington Council has now had four years to demonstrate that it is capable of taking a balanced, strategic and community-facing approach to its role. After all this time, residents are no wiser about where Noosa is headed, there being no genuine vision enunciated for this wonderful place. Instead there is piecemeal decisionmaking, often inimical to the best interests of a harmonious, prosperous and truly sustainable community. This has to change.

NO TO BIOSPHERE In the last few months the Noosa biosphere foundation has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, with a lot of their projects credibility questioned, and more recently, the very embarrassing saga over the 'Bring back the fish' fiasco.

A lot of Noosa ratepayers are questioning the purpose of such an organisation, and have compared it to a massive black hole ab-

sorbing millions of dollars of rates, for hardly any tangible returns ... but does Noosa need a biosphere foundation? Personally I don't think so.

At present, the NBF's job is basically to accredit projects for diverse environmental groups, and reward great ideas and concepts with financial grants, a job that the council itself could do, and by doing so, saving ratepayers money.

Even though the eight directors involved on the board of the NBF are voluntary, there are costs involved in running such a foundation, a cost that the Noosa council can hardly afford.

By abolishing the NBF, the Noosa council would make themselves more responsible and accountable to their community and become really in charge of their own destiny .... or is that too scary?

THE BLACK LAGOON Residents and visitors attempting to visit the beautiful Castaways Beach at Access 42 are currently confronted with a stretch of dark black water about a metre deep at the base of the expensive aluminium stairway.

This poses a choice - do you wade across unable to see the creek bed possibly containing anything from broken glass to submerged logs or even stonefish, which have been prevalent in Sunshine Coast waters? The present expanse of ponded water resulted from the big king tides a couple of weeks ago, so the presence of marine creatures is certainly a possibility.

Some take the risk, others are deterred and seek the next available access and for many, that will be an unofficial overgrown track across the dunes just north of the stairway.

No doubt the official response will be that there are other safe official beach access tracks to the north and south, but Access 42 is closest to the safe underpass below David Low Way and our Noosa Council must have realised this when they decided to construct the impressive aluminium stairway at a reported cost of more than $85,000.

So at various times during the year, sometimes for weeks or months at a time, the stairway remains a very expensive white elephant.

But the fix should be easy and inexpensive. The obvious quick fix would be to reopen the existing mouth, but council officers have informed me in the past that while they can do this at Burgess Creek and the creek at Sunshine Beach, they do not have State Government approval to shift sand from the mouth at Castaways Creek, crazy as that seems.

Another obvious solution would be to spend a few dollars more and extend a low walkway several metres out from the base of the stairway and across the creek bed.

Mother Nature meanwhile is attempting its own fix by carving away into the sand bank just upstream of the stairway, slowly cutting its own way back to the sea where the mouth was originally, but this could take anything from years to one big flood. A front end loader could do the job in a couple of hours, but that's a no-no, according to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, which cites a possibly threat to the "pristine wetlands" upstream.

Well, the wetlands survived years ago when the creek ran out to sea where it is attempting to carve its way now and the waterway then was much more pristine than the Singapore Daisy and noxious weeds which line the banks now.

Red tape rules over common sense and white elephants prosper under the status quo - apparently.

These are the predictions for 2018 from Master Builders Queensland.

The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show a swing towards new construction of stand-alone housing rather than units.

In the year to September house construction commencements increased by four per cent, while unit commencements dropped by a whopping 40 per cent.

On Sunday 4 February, PetRescue affiliated rescue groups will pay a visit to PETstock Noosa to help rescue pets find families that will love them forever. The initiative aims to raise awareness of pet adoption as part of their National Pet Adoption Day. Actor Gyton Grantley, Underbelly star and host of Channel TEN’s Pooches at Play, has thrown his weight behind the national campaign that encourages Australians to adopt rather than shop for pets.

Gyton, who grew up with pets and now looks after the adorable chocolate labrador George, says that close to 40 percent of homes have pets and that he hopes to encourage as many owners as possible to consider adopting their next animal, instead of purchasing.

“The tide is turning when it comes to pet adoption thanks to the hard work of rescue organisations and the passionate people behind them,” Gyton says.

“Increasing numbers of Australians are realising there are tens of thousands of homeless pets out there waiting for someone to love them, and they’re choosing to adopt.

“But there’s still a lot more work to do. I’m encouraging Noosa locals to attend National Pet Adoption Day at PETstock Noosa to learn more about local rescue pets and maybe even meet some beautiful pets up for adoption,” Gyton says.

“We want even more people to take the next step by adopting a pet in need and if people are unable to have a pet in their life, then we urge them to educate others on the benefits of adoption and fostering.”

Every year, approximately 200,000 healthy pets find themselves homeless in Australia’s pounds and shelters - a statistic PETstock and PetRescue are determined to change.

PETstock chief executive officer Shane Young says if just one in five pet seekers chose to adopt a pet instead of shop, we could end pet homelessness in Australia.

“Our goal is for every rescue pet to find their forever home, and we’re getting closer,” he says.

“PetRescue figures show the adoption of pets is increasing year-on-year, demonstrating how saving every homeless pet in Australia is possible, but we still have a way to go.”

“Last National Pet Adoption Day saw more than 500 pets find forever homes and we’re hoping to increase on this figure in 2018,” Shane says.

PetRescue co-founder Vickie Davy says people may be surprised by who they find at National Pet Adoption Day. “’Pets of all types, sizes, breeds and ages will be available for adoption so everyone is sure to find their perfect match,” she says.

“The beauty of adoption is that people can adopt a pet that’s the perfect fit for them. The rescue group can give you an overview of the animal’s behaviour and personality so you know exactly what you’re going to get - great for those wanting an animal but who may not have time to raise and train a young puppy or kitten.

“Adopted pets are filled with unlimited love, affection and gratitude for their new homes.

They make great lifelong companions and can teach valuable lessons to children on the importance of responsibility and empathy.”

Before joining their forever family, adopted pets are de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated and treated for parasites, as well as having undergone a comprehensive veterinary assessment.

The event for National Pet Adoption Day is on this Sunday, from 10am-2pm, at PETstock Noosa, Homemaker Centre, 18 Thomas Street, Noosaville. ●

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Sirocco Noosa is famous for its modern Australian take on dishes of the Mediterranean and Middle East.

Try their succulent lamb meatballs with a spiced tomato sauce - so popular they can't be taken off the menu. The Moroccan inspired braised pork with melt in your mouth crackling, although a new edition to the menu, is already receiving rave reviews.

Sirocco are now taking bookings for the Tastes of Sirocco event, featuring a threecourse banquet on Friday the 2nd of March starting at 6pm.

Tuesday through to Saturday's are a must do with their lunch specials. The dishes offered as part of the popular $28, two-course lunch special (entree and main) are created and changed monthly based on produce seasonality. Some of the more popular specials, such as the seared scallop in the half shell with cauliflower puree, crisp pancetta, are making a follow up appearance on the seasonal menu.

Also new for Sirocco is the Early Bird Dinner. They understand that sometimes lunch may not be possible and don't want anyone to miss out on their delectable lunch specials, so the lunch special menu is now available as an early bird dinner from 5pm to 6pm Tuesday to Friday.

Great for parties and a hit every time, this easy entertaining recipe offers an Italian twist on the traditional cob loaf dip. Just perfect to feed your friends, family or a crowd.

INGREDIENTS 1 cob loaf 5 cherry tomatoes, quartered 5 stuffed green olives, sliced 100g pepperoni salami, sliced or cut into thin strips 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 red capsicum, deseeded, finely chopped 2 tablespoons tomato paste 375g sour cream 320g (4 cups) coarsely grated tasty cheese Chopped fresh continental parsley

METHOD STEP 1 Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan forced. Cut the top third from the cob loaf.

Scoop out the bread inside (in one piece if possible), leaving a 2cm thick wall. Set the top and inside bread aside.

STEP 2 Place the loaf on a baking tray and spray with oil. Bake for 20 minutes or until crisp. Slice the reserved top and inside of the cob and place on a tray along with the tomato, olive and 20g of the peperoni. Spray with oil. Bake for 5-10

minutes or until the bread is crisp.

STEP 3 Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and add the onion, garlic, capsicum and remaining pepperoni. Cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the tomato paste, sour cream and cheese and stir until melted.

STEP 4 Fill the loaf with the cheese mixture. Top with the roasted tomato, olive and pepperoni.

Sprinkle with parsley and serve with the bread.

This guide is about getting practical, getting down to business. What can parents, teachers, professionals and other people who work with kids do every day to build happy, healthy, resilient kids?

How can parents foster resilience in their kids?

Support your kids to be more independent, give them safe healthy challenges, don't be afraid to remove the training wheels and let the ride. Let them lose at board games, at sport, so they learn how to deal with disappointment and if they fall, let them pick themselves up rather than doing it for them. The point is, kids learn from

experience and it can help them.

What are the benefits of fostering resilience in children?

Mental health problems start early, half before the age of 14. If we can get in early, teach kids some basic skills through parents, teachers and others, we know that we can prevent a lot of those mental health challenges later in life and we can also build a generation who if they do become mentally unwell, they can cope, they can recover quicker.

Are kids today too soft?

I think the trick is to find the balance between nurturing your children, loving them, protecting them, but also giving them safe and healthy challenges, safe and healthy challenges are actually what kids need. We cannot wrap our kids too much in cotton wool. It will not help them as adults, it will not teach them the skills to be able to bounce back from the life adversities that will inevitably happen to us all. â—?

Building resilience starts from day one, and the skills can be learned by all children including our most sensitive little ones, new research has found.

Parents and professionals who work with children can help kids develop resilience by creating safe challenges, encouraging supportive relationships and teaching them to think positively, according to new findings from beyondblue.

The research has been used to develop everyday strategies that can be applied in kindergartens, schools and at home to foster resilience in all children.

To coincide with the start of the 2018 school year, beyondblue is launching webbased tips for parents and a new practice guide for professionals, called Building Resilience in Children aged 0-12.

"Most of the existing research about resilience seems to focus on developing this skill during adolescence rather than the early years and through primary school, so we wanted to fill this gap," beyondblue CEO Georgie Harman said.

"We know that half of all lifetime mental health issues emerge by the age of 14 and experts agree that increasing resilience among children aged 0-12 could potentially prevent mental health issues during childhood and later in life."

Strategies found to help develop resilience in children include: Talking about feelings - encouraging children to discuss their feelings can help them better understand, and regulate, themselves.

Supporting independence - simple challenges can help them develop strategies to cope when they feel uncomfortable. Don't be afraid to remove the training wheels and let them ride.

Building closeness with family and friends - knowing they are loved helps build self-esteem.

Promoting healthy thinking habits positive thinking can be learned and used to overcome routine mental obstacles.

The strategies are based on a 12-month research project lead by the Parenting Research Centre and Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth. The project reviewed academic research and generated expert consensus on resilience concepts. This research was complemented by consultations with parents, children and practitioners from around the country.

The work aimed to produce practical, evidence-based strategies for parents and professionals working with children, including early childhood educators, teachers and maternal child health nurses.

The Building Resilience in Children aged 0-12 guide contains specific phrases and scenarios that professionals can apply to help build resilience in their students. It can be downloaded free of charge from the beyondblue website: beyondblue.org.au/ resilience-guide For parents, beyondblue has added simple, practical tips to its Healthy Families website: healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/ resilience "With a strong new evidence base, this material will help professionals and parents navigate the overwhelming volume of information about resilience that is publicly available," Ms Harman said.

The research was funded by beyondblue and major partner Future Generation Global Investment Company (FGG).

FGG CEO Louise Walsh said the company was focused on delivering longterm funding for projects that would deliver meaningful impact. COMMUNITY UPDATES FRIDAY FORUM Farmers are custodians of about half of Australia's landmass. We're all familiar with alarming price rises after major events like cyclones or heatwaves, but Australia's farmers have a long and proud tradition of innovation and adaptation when challenged by extreme weather. Climate change is ramping up the severity of the challenges but many farmers are taking climate change action into their own hands.

Verity Morgan- Schmidt, now a Sunshine Coast local, grew up on a West Australian farm. She will be guest speaker at Noosa Parks Association's first Friday Environment Forum on 2 February. Ms Morgan-Schmidt is CEO of Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) and a passionate advocate for transformation. She will describe how FCA is putting farmers front and centre in creating climate solutions.

A WILD WELCOME Are you interested in animals and wildlife? Do you have four hours spare a week to volunteer?

The wildlife Centre at Eumundi is looking for volunteers to help out with feeding, cleaning and preparing food for their wildlife in care. And right now they are still busy with loads of patients that arrived in spring and are still not ready for release, and they could do with more help.

There are several shifts a day, each with different duties, however they would like to hear from anyone who can regularly commit to a four-hour shift.

The Bennett brothers were sent in to open the second innings and with Alex the only wicket to fall, managed to chase the 30 runs required for outright victory with Nick finishing on 16 and Darcy Morgan 6.

The win lifts the team into 5th place on the ladder and within reach of the top 4, with a testing match at home next week against 2nd placed Burpengary.

Play eventually got underway an hour late after a rain delay to put an extra level of tension into what was always going to be good game. After Nambour's lightning start last week, some tight bowling by Tewantin held the visitors in check until the openers were removed before the 10th over to be 2/32 thanks to a Kieran Dunning inswinger. Nambour produced some good partnerships, but with consistent bowling they were never able to get away and wickets fell steadily. With Nambour inching towards the target, wickets were getting more crucial and a series of strategic bowling changes were made at one end while Will Gear toiled away at the other with a spell of 12 overs, 1/29 including 4 maidens. A missed stumping of Nambour's top scorer as he approached his 50 provided a break for the visitors.

With 3 wickets in hand and only 40 runs to win, Tewantin stuck with the plan to tie up an end and attack from the other.

The plan worked with the attack effectively shutting down the scoring in the last 5 overs, with Will Gear picking up the last 3 wickets to finish with 4/65. A thrilling final 4 overs cheered on by a vocal crowd that was building due to the late finish, saw momentum shift back and forth until the super sub took a spectacular one hander to trigger the celebrations with just 3 runs to spare. Fourth grade started where they left off, chasing 180 as Nev Kratzman returned to the crease to steadily add to his total.

Batting with Naveen Chand, he was eventually caught on 29, with the score on 73 and the heat starting to take its toll on fielders, batsmen and umpires alike. Naveen batted with great control before falling lbw for 24 to have Tewantin 4/95 and the game delicately balanced. Craig Moore looked settled before holing out square of the wicket to a one handed catch for 20 with the score 5/104. A swashbuckling 10 from Rupert Kain and the pressure was on at 6/115.

But it was the reliable bat of Luke Anstey, ably assisted by Shane Gessell that steered Tewantin to within reach of the win, just 5 runs short at the tea break. The total passed shortly afterwards, and Luke and Shane combined for an 80 run partnership, to wrap up first innings points at 7/195 with Shane adding 37. Enter Justin Talbot, who wasted no time in settling in before he and Anstey took to the bowling and combined for a 140 run partnership to put the game beyond doubt, with Talbot hitting 2 towering 6s and 11 x 4s. Luke Anstey on 99 looked set to bring up his century as he smashed a cover drive, only to be caught by the second one handed catch of the day to end up one run short of his ton. The final score 8 dec for 335 puts the team just behind the 2nd placed Palmwoods securing valuable bonus points with the decisive win. ●

Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club Premier sevens teams played two games over the Australia Day Weekend.

Saturday 27 January - Round 4 saw both premier 7 teams hosting opposition teams.

Division 1 Section 6 hosted Red Hill in a top of the table battle. Jay Dawe fought hard in a game against an undefeated singles player, he claimed a win again 31-24. A new fours combination were valliant against strong opponents and the game was a close finish with a narrow loss by one shot, 20-21.

The pairs team played a competive game and were against strong opposition with the result 9-17 not showing the true grit of the game.

Division 3 Section 7 went up against Glasshouse. Danny Crameri had a loss 15-31, though the final score doesnt reflect the hard tight game played by both players.

The Fours played great together being led well by Glen Whyte, all four performed well to record a 17-16 win. A new pairs combination worked well with a 27-16 win.

Sunday 28 January - Round 5. Division 1 Section 6 hosted Coolum Beach in what can be considered a local derby. Jay Dawe fought hard against a strong coolum singles player in a 36 end match, the final score 24-31 against Jay doesnt show the true grit of the game. The fours once more gave a very worthy performance and went down 19-26. The pairs team combined strongly to get another win for themselves 22-15. The wind played a part with a swirling wind.

This team had two losses over the weekend by rink scores 2-1.

Division 3 Section 7 went on road trip to Scarborough. Danny Crameri once more came close but went down 27-31. The Fours had to make last minute changes with player unavailability and the final result 6-27 showed they had not played together in that combination. The pairs side remained unchanged over both weekend games and they came close to another win but just lost 17-19. This side had a mixed result and won 2-1 on Saturday but lost 3-0 on Sunday.

In summary at the half way point of season, Div 1 have a 3-2 win / loss record and Div 3 are 4-1.

MONEYPENNY’S OWNER REVS IT UP

Noosa resident racing driverand owner of Miss Moneypenny's, Ben Walsh, has been confirmed in the driver line-up to race in next weekend's Bathurst 12 Hour, driving with the U.K factory Ginetta team in their GT4 car.

The Bathurst 12 Hour event, held at the world famous Mount Panorama Circuit, is considered one of the most elite and gruelling endurance events on the International motor sport calendar. The event attracts the top teams and drivers from all over the world, including many of the best Australian V8 Supercar drivers.

Walsh, owner of Miss Moneypenny's Restaurant and Bar on Hastings Street in Noosa, will be partnering up with the British Ginetta Team factory driver flown in especially for the race. Ginetta are a Britishbased manufacturer, with a rich history of over 70-years constructing some of the most competitive GT racing cars in the world.

Apart from Ginetta, the GT4 class has attracted international entries from manufacturers such as Mclaren, BMW, Mercedes and Aston Martin. This will be

Walsh's first ever attempt at an endurance race of this distance.

Walsh said: 'This opportunity to race with such a competitive team in their factory car is amazing. It will be my first ever endurance event of this type so I am faced with new challenges that I must adapt to extremely quickly. The 12-hour race, even though it is an extremely long endurance event, is treated as a sprint race from a drivers perspective. The cars are built so well these days that we really will be racing on the limit, flat out for the 12 hours. I've had to focus heavily on my fitness in the offseason so I can meet the rigorous demands required to lap Bathurst competitively for such extended periods of time in the car.

We have a competitive package and we are going there with the goal of standing on the top step of the podium at 5.45pm on Sunday afternoon.'

Walsh tested successfully last Tuesday at Queensland Raceway with the Ginetta team, quickly achieving competitive lap times in his very first outing in the car.

The Bathurst 12 Hour will be televised live on 7 Mate from 5.30am until 6pm Sunday 4 February. ●

This program offers netball games for the 11 years and older participants, modified netball games for the 8-10 year olds and netball skills for the 5-8 year olds in NetSetGo. As an accredited NetSetGo centre for the past 10 years our NetSetGo coaches have a wealth of experience in providing a junior entry level netball program. The program has been developed to provide the youngest netballers with the best possible learning and playing experience to develop a lifelong love of the sport.

competition, Noosa Netball also runs 2 seasons of the ladies indoor competition.

This competition provides competitive games for ladies 14 years and over of all skill levels - there are even teams with Mums & Daughters playing together!

Sunshine Beach State School winning team.

Sunshine Beach State School have successfully defended their state title at the Brisbane International 2018. They are the first state school in Queensland to complete back to back titles in the primary schools competition. The three day competition, which starts with regional trials in August brings together Queensland's best primary school tennis teams to compete at the Brisbane International where the students have the chance to play along side some of the world's best players. The Brisbane International Schools State Finals is a mixed team competition for all Queensland primary schools.

Sunshine Beach remained undefeated throughout the competition and ended as clear winners on day three to be crowned 2018 State Champions for the second time. Teams play in a round robin format to decide the final groups before the competition heats up. Each team consists or 4 or 5 players. Each tie consists of four singles and 2 doubles.

Sunshine Beach made it to the top pool on day 2 with 3 victories on day one of the competition. The teams that Sunshine Beach would eventually have to compete against in the championship pool were Brisbane Boys College, Somerset College, Marymount 42 NOOSA TODAY

Sunshine Beach were in a strong position going in to the competition thanks to the fact that both Christian Caldwell and Maison May had remained in the team from last year. Playing in the number one position again, Christian won an amazing 16 matches out of 16 and Maison also helped anchor the team with an equally impressive 15 out of 16 match victories playing as the number 2. The pair remained undefeated in the doubles throughout the competition putting the team in a commanding position in each tie. The team also included Callan Paul, Pia Walpole and Brooke Terrell.

Callan and Pia constantly stepped up their intensity and effort in the singles matches and managed to win enough matches and games between them for the team to pull through.The team has been coached by Nick Caldwell from the Noosa Tennis Academy.

The program for Sunshine Beach was started four years ago as a way for the Noosa Tennis Club and Academy to link with the local state school. Cameron Porter of Sunshine Beach State School has been very supportive of the program and is constantly developing the skill and agility of the players through their PE classes. ●

With the Reserves winning the premiership and the Seniors finishing runner up in 2017, the club is super excited about season 2018. Playing in the QFA Division 1 competition, the Seniors and Reserves compete against teams from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The Colts (under 18) are set for a big year playing against teams from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane and with a core group of players already training hard in preparation for the year ahead.

The Juniors contain competitions for

under 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 in youth boys and Under 13 & 15 in you girls. All junior matches are played on the Sunshine Coast.

The Noosa Tigers AFC also run an Auskick program for children just starting out to play AFL and also a Special Needs program for people with a disability.

Now that it's February and the tumult and the shouting have died down - well, a little bit at least - I'd like to share with you a couple of glimpses into a more restful Noosa, long gone and much lamented, that I found last weekend during a fruitless search through my digital files for something quite important.

This is not so important, just a timely reminder of why we came here in the first place. The words are from the personal diaries of artist Donald Friend, a rascally rascal who, like the Noosa he describes, is long gone and much lamented. And forgive me if I've used some of it in this space before, but if so it's worth a reprise: 1-9 August 1966, Noosa: In a little wooden cottage on stilts built right on the beach. There is no sound but the persuasive lulling of the waves breaking in long white lines. Beautiful sun-drenched empty days by the sea - or not empty, full of pleasant purposeless activities - walks along the rocky coast, talking and talking ... swimming, hours of sunbaking ... at night a few drinks at a pub on top of the hill, and early to bed to sleep deeply, and occasionally waking to hear the snoring sea.

The photo I've chosen to accompany it is from the splendid collection at Noosa Library Service/Picture Noosa, and is one of the first photos taken using a drone, then

known as a light plane with a man holding a camera out the open door. It's from a decade before the Noosa that Friend describes, but you get the feeling.

And please note that at the rivermouth at the bottom of the frame, which is now the top end of the Noosa Woods, there are no public dunnies in evidence. Despite the recent rash of posts on social and local media for a dunny block every hundred metres or so, this is the way it should remain. Dunnies are ugly and we have enough. I know that our demographic is the oldest in the civilised world, with all the problems that involves, but if you are worried about the alleged paucity of public conveniences, just follow this three-point plan: · Go before you go · Hold it in · If all else fails, walk about 300 metres from any point in the Woods and you'll find one

EMILY SHINES IN CHINA I mentioned last week that Noosaville junior sensation Emily Lethbridge was looking good at the ISA World Titles in Hainan, China. Well, she not only looked good, she delivered the goods, making the repechage final and finishing sixth overall against the best women longboarders in the

world, milking the soft lefthanders of Riyue Bay for all she was worth.

I shared a few fun waves at First Point with Em's shaper and mentor Josh Constable last weekend, and he commented that she was improving at a rate that was almost frightening, taking on technical advice like a sponge, and applying it in every heat she surfed. And she still has years to go as a junior, so without putting the mantle of expectation on Emily's shoulders, she's off to a flyer in world longboarding, and good luck to her.

The ISA world title went to California's Tory Gilkerson, who clawed her way into the final and then picked the best set waves, such as they were. And while Em was the only local athlete representing at the pointy end, Noosa boardbuilders were front and centre, with Emily on a Josh Constable Creative Army, of course, and third-placer Honolua Blomfield, the reigning world WSL champ and a member of the Classic Malibu team, riding her CM shaped by Peter White at Noosaville.

Surf season has arrived, and not a moment too soon While the anticipated Coral Sea action on the points hadn't really kicked in at the time of writing, there was pretty clear evidence that the motion in the ocean was moving the right way, and the longer term

I'm always fascinated by the way it just all clicks in sometime in mid to late summer. The wind swings east-south-east, scudding showers and brief squalls give the surface conditions a bit of a touch-up and the moisture intensifies the humidity.

What drives this is the oscillation of tropical weather systems, which I've vaguely understood for decades, but I'm indebted to Swellnet's Craig Brokensha for drawing a mud map and giving it a name.

For the season of waves that we are hopefully about to have, we must give thanks to the increased activity of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) which moves eastward across the tropical latitudes, increasing and decreasing its momentum as it goes, and has just crossed into the Coral Sea while conveniently entering a significant uptick of activity. Yew! While the MJO doesn't guarantee offshore tropical lows - the engine room of our best swells - it brings sustained instability to the region, increasing the likelihood of tropical storms that will engender swell.

How long the MJO will hang around is another matter. Hopefully a couple of months, or at least until I get back from the Back of Beyond this weekend. ●

This weekend, the Noosa Summer Swim Festival celebrates its fifth birthday with seven ocean swims over two days at Noosa Main Beach.

The scenes on the start line tell the story - it isn't lined with typical 'athletes'. In the 1.0km short course event, there are often three generations swimming together - kids, parents and grandparents, that's rare in any sport.

This Summer there will be two generations of one family that may be familiar - the Klim's.

Michael Klim is one of Australia's most successful swimmers of all time. He is a world champion, a world record holder and a three-time Olympian with medals from all three Olympic Games, including two gold medals. In 2018, the Klim kids, Rocco, Frankie and Stellar, will be on the start line alongside their Dad. "The kids have seen my photos from

Noosa each year and asked when they get to come along!"

"We'll finally all get to swim together at Noosa this weekend - I can't wait!" says Michael.

It's also becoming a tradition for past Olympic swimmers like Libby Trickett or Michael Klim to line up themselves for a swim, then present a current a batch of Olympians with the annual trophies, like Chelsea Gubecka, Jess Ashwood, or Jarrod Poort.

NIGHT FISHERS REAP REWARDS all been prime baits.

Consistent winds are proving difficult for anglers in smaller craft to head to venture offshore, larger craft are heading out and concentrating their efforts around the closer reefs. Sunshine has produced some lovely coral trout as well as sweetlip and large cod.

Large Spanish mackerel have been cruising around the main reef system at Sunshine.

Trolling hardbodies or fishing slow trolled live yakkas or slimies on a stinger rig is proving popular options. Larger craft did the run up to North reef with cobia, maori cod, pearl perch, venus tusk fish, spanish and spotty mackerel all on the menu.

In the fresh water, the Yabba and Kingham arms of the Borumba Dam have been seeing some exciting saratoga action. An early morning fish with surface walkers, and small shallow divers in bright colours has claimed some nice fish. Blades have been working well on the bass in the deeper parts of the dams, while the surface bite has come from around the edges early morning and late afternoon. ●

Terrace stretch, dog beach, Tewantin boat ramp and river mouth. Fresh mullet strips and salted bonito seems to be working best.

The Trevally in Woods Bay have been in good numbers, fish were feeding on the surface and where happy to take darker coloured poppers and surface walkers. We are still see seeing good quality muddies caught in pots set in deep water near the mangroves and left in for at least one full tide. Fresh bait is a must!

Beach angler have been getting some great fish over the past week after the big swells, there are good gutter all up the beaches, try to concentrate your efforts around the top of the tide. Dart, whiting and bream as well as tailor and smaller jew have all come from the gutters along Noosa's North Shore. Smaller baits like worms and prawns have been good through the day with plenty of dart and whiting on offer. The Noosa River has again been the saviour of a lot of anglers as the winds still seem to be at that annoying 10 to 15 knot mark. This is just enough to keep a lot smaller craft from venturing out and sticking to the river.

The Noosa River mouth has been fishing well for large flathead on the run out tide, live baits like herring and poddy mullet have claimed some monster females. Flathead have also been firing in the channel in Lake Cooroibah as well as the deeper section at the mouth of the lake have seen some quality fish landed. Drifting whole fish baits like frogmouth pilchards and hardy heads has been successful. Using live baits and large strip baits fished late into the night around heavy structures has been producing some outstanding mangrove jacks. Fishing the run out tide after a warmer than usual days seems to be the pick of the times to chase these fish. There have been some good whiting taken from around the Dog Beach and Munna point areas. Bream have been in good numbers right throughout the system.

NO CANDID CAMERAS ON THE BEACH As we earlier stated it has been a happy and safe festive season; good weather plenty of sun and safe surfing on all our three beaches.

However there is one thing that should be noted regarding visits to our beaches; that is cameras.

When one pays a visit to our beautiful beaches, alone, or with family or friends, it is only natural that some will want to take photos; particularly of our beautiful scenery.

If by chance you are alone and have a big camera hanging around your neck it would be a nice courtesy to take a moment and introduce yourself to the duty lifesavers or lifeguards.

Letting them know your purpose and your actions will be appreciated.

Show respect to all and appreciate their privacy and in particular when visiting Noosa, where public showers are located just behind the beach and young families are bathing little ones.

Please enjoy the beauty of our beaches but above all, respect the privacy of other people and in particular our young families.

Last weekend was a very busy time for our competitors.

Down south there were the annual Australia Day carnivals at Manly and Freshwater and in our own back yard the big one at Maroochydore.

At Sydney beaches the Noosa boat crews performed well.

At Manly the two u/19 girls crews the Drongues and the Scrub Turkeys made the final with the Drongues finished second and the Scrub Turkeys fifth. The u/19 boys made the semifinals.

At Freshie the two girls crews tied for second place and the boys finished fifth in the finals after fouling on the turning

cans. Both sweeps Mick Gardner and Dave Tomba agreed they were very happy with the results and are looking forward to the titles.

Over the last couple of seasons Mother Nature has not been very kind and Noosa has been getting less surf.

Therefore it is absolutely imperative that our young lifesavers travel to open beaches for the experience of competing in big seas.

This is an invaluable part of their ongoing training.

Last weekend Noosa and Sunshine travelled to Maroochydore for their annual Murphy Homes Maroochydore Classic and in big surf the performance of their lifesavers was outstanding.

For Noosa the highlight was Lana Rogers winning the Open Iron Woman in big surf, a win that will no doubt do wonders for her self-confidence; and 3rd in the open swim was a major plus.

Another highlight was Noosas win in the women’s Open Taplin Relay. Their dominance in this event this season will be a major boost for both the state and national titles.

Another highlight for Noosa was their second in the open mens surf team. “All our teams u/15, 17 and 19 boys and girls did exceptional well,” said Coach Mercer.

Sunshines performance was similar.

Outstanding was Ruby Nolan first in the u/17 Iron Woman and surf race.

A first in the u/17 girls Taplin was really outstanding and in the u/15 boys iron man a second place was well deserved.

Great weekend for the youth of both clubs: well done to our coaches, Darren Mercer Noosa and Josh Minogue Sunshine. ●

BY HOLLIE HARRIS In all the excitement brewing about the return of waves to our points over the last week, I couldn’t resist getting in on the talk.

Sickies were planned in advance and work went on hold for a lucky bunch who can do it, in the pre-empt of good things to come. The best part? Schools back, holidays and long weekends are over and we would finally get our car parks and waves back, just in time, right? Pfft!

By the look of things, the good word perhaps was spread a little far afield as surfers arrived in hordes to pack out the Noosa Points.

Monday saw swells up to about 4 ft.

With fresh SE winds, it’s been points only and improving as the tide drops out. This all adds up to one thing here in Noosa - car park bedlam and waves so crowded it’s nearly impossible to catch a ride. You need a paddle machine, a heck of a lot of patience and arms like tree trunks to have any chance at snagging a wave.

That pretty much left me out of the game.
