Nervous wait on livelihood

By Brendan Rees A Berwick couple are waiting nervously to find out whether their allegedly stolen trailer was damaged in a towing business fire - only days after it was recovered in Hallam.

Courtney Hill and Clay Tharle say it was "a huge sigh of relief" to be reunited with their trailer on Tuesday, 23 January after it was allegedly stolen earlier this month.

The trailer, which was used for the couple's lemonade business, Lemon-Aid was found by police at a Hallam address and towed to Berwick Towing Service on Enterprise Avenue, Berwick.

The trailer was allegedly taken from a factory carpark in Deblin Drive, Narre Warren

during the earlier hours of Friday, 12 January.

But the state of the trailer remained in limbo after a fire ripped through the towing centre on Friday, 26 January.

Just days before the fire, an elated Mr Tharle said they had not been confident of getting the trailer back until they received the good news.

"It means the world now. To get that back is just a huge sigh of relief," he said."We ended up going last week and buying another caravan. We were just going to turn it back into our lemonade stand."

Earlier this week Mr Tharle said they were yet to find out if their trailer was damaged in the fire.

Police and CFA crews from Berwick, Hallam, Dandenong and Bayswater were called to

the towing centre fire at about 5.50am where it's believed at least two cars were damaged.

A CFA spokesperson said "multiple cars were alight," adding the fire was contained by 7.15am.

Berwick CFA First Lieutenant Peter Obeth said the factory filled up with thick black smoke causing a lot of damage.

"Once we got in and squirted a lot of water around and knocked it down, it was a little bit easier to see what was going on."

He said no one in the building at the time of the fire but added there were multiple cars parked inside.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined and police are investigating.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Hatt from the

Southern Metro Crime Unit said the damage was unknown and they were in the process of speaking to witnesses and looking at CCTV footage.

"There are no real answers for us or anyone else at present," he said.

"As far as being a criminal act we simply don't know. We can say a lot more until we know exactly what's going on" Berwick Towing Service declined to comment on the incident.

Police are also investigating the theft of the trailer where it's believed two cars were caught on CCTV from a business in Deblin Drive at the time the trailer was allegedly stolen.

Casey launches campaign on roads, rail

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council has entered the 2018 state election fray with a plea to vying political parties for $2.7 billion in roads and rail in the South East.

Under a 'Commit to Casey' banner, the council is lobbying for an extended Cranbourne rail line and for $1.2 billion in road upgrades.

The council claims soaring traffic volumes and slashed public transport budgets have made Casey's roads among the state's most clogged.

As part of the campaign - during what's tipped to be a tight election - the council has launched a website for visitors to send a pre-form email, and request a bumper sticker or a placard.

Mayor Geoff Ablett said the investment would create more than 18,000 jobs, better link homes and employment precincts and inject

$1.5 billion into the local economy.

"Fixing roads and extending rail will create jobs, improve access to essential services, ease cost of living pressures and help the local community and economy thrive," Cr Ablett said.

"Investment in Casey infrastructure is well overdue, this can't go on, and urgent action is needed."

Resident Mark Seels, in backing the campaign, said it was "great to see Council standing up for Casey families".

"Too many families spend too much time stuck in traffic each day - all they want is to get where they need to go safer and sooner."

Casey's roads wish-list includes extending Dandenong Bypass to South Gippsland Freeway, upgrading Pound Road, Greaves Road and

O'Shea Road and eliminating the Remington Drive level crossing.

Other proposals are finishing the duplication of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and BerwickCranbourne Road as well as extending Thompsons and Glasscocks roads.

The campaign has a tighter focus than the council's advocacy during the 2014 state election.

During that poll, the council backed the thenLiberal Government's plans for East West Link and Port of Hastings.

It also lobbied for funding for Bunjil Place, youth mental health services, bus and road upgrades, and creating jobs in Casey-Cardinia.

"The (trespassers) are treating it as a drop-in centre effectively "It's just a nuisance and a blight on the local landscape. We've agitated for some time for something to be done."

Mr Hewitt proposes a hub for services such as indigenous childcare, youth and indigenous vocational training in its stead. It would be a valuable addition to a precinct of shops, eateries and community education services - and a short walk from Narre Warren railway station, he argues.

Most of the anti-social issues appear to occur at night but Mr Hewitt has confronted youngadult loiterers "leering at little kids" in the playground.

On one occasion, the men responded by trying to jump the playground fence, forcing Mr Hewitt to lock the centre's doors.

"Our concern is the potential (harm) not the actual.

"We have no control over what's happening over there - and it's not necessarily socially appropriate."

Several years ago, the former facility was touted as a potential mosque and community centre by the Hazara group, the Etrat Institute of Australia. It was however effectively abandoned in 2014 when Etrat's plan was rejected by Casey Council due to an abject parking shortfall.

Mr Hewitt has made unsuccessful attempts to contact Etrat since. "If you can't use it, sell it," is his advice.

Casey Council has been considering compulsorily acquiring the site since September 2016.

Casey spokesman Gerard Scholten said the council was undertaking a community-service needs study in Narre Warren to identify whether the property needed to be acquired.

Casey had previously cleaned up graffiti of an "offensive nature" and responded to graffiti reports.

My parents feared they were losing me when I was just 2 days old. It was a horrendous scare because they'd lost the baby just before me.

May I have three please?Getting married to my beautiful wife, becoming a Dad to my 6 priceless treasures & graduating from Harvest Bible College.

3. Congratulations on receiving an Australia Day award. How did this feel to be a part of the awards ceremony?

Thanks. I had mixed emotions. I felt surprised, fortunate and blessed. Hats off to the Hon Anthony Byrne and his entire Holt office for putting on such a fantastic event for the community.

4. What's the best thing about being a part of the Gethsemane Church?

Being able to share God's love throughout the community and being able to help others exercise their capabilities and reach their full potential.

5.Where did you learn to sing and play the guitar?

I'm self-taught. I watched my Dad play his guitar when he sang with my Mum. 6. Were you overwhelmed by the support from the support after organising the inaugural Clyde Christmas last year?

Absotively, Posilutely!!!! In fact, it still hasn't quite sunk in as such. It's refreshing to know that there are so many awesome folk out there who are keen to support a good cause.

7. What is your favourite book?

The Bible.

8. At school I... was not always a happy chappy but did the best with the resources available to me.

9. If you could play in any sporting event around the world, what it would be?

The Australian Open or the Olympics (Swimming).

My own concert in 2011. PURELY for the fact that my children joined me on stage.

Blackmail fail, jail for Sale

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hampton Park man may soon be released from jail for blackmailing a Dandenong panel beater, a car theft and illegally possessing stolen high-powered rifles in September 2016.

Elijah Sale, 20, threatened to tie up the panel beater, throw him in a vehicle and burn down the factory if a ‘debt’ of $50,000 wasn’t paid within a month.

Sale told the victim that he knew where the victim lived.

Sale had been enlisted by a man who had just been released from jail for stealing a

$30,000 ‘debt’ from the same panel-beater.

Over the next three weeks, Sale re-visited the factory, phoned the victim and even spoke to the victim’s mother at the victim’s home.

“In effect, you stood over him for a person imprisoned for similar conduct,” Victorian County Court judge Mark Dean said during sentencing on 29 January.

Sale was arrested soon after visiting the workshop in a freshly-stolen Audi A5 vehicle.

Police found photos on Sale’s phone of him bearing four fire-arms stolen in an aggravated burglary.

The photos were dated one hour after the

burglary.

Sale – who was 18 at the time of his arrest – was entitled to be sentenced as a young offender who required supervision and rehabilitative support on his release from jail, Judge Dean said.

However, he was found to be no longer fit for youth detention, having served his remand in an adult prison since his arrest.

He also had a lengthy history for armed robbery, weapons charges, intentionally causing injury and car theft despite the Childrens Court’s attempts to help him reform.

Sale had below-average intellect and a substance abuse disorder that made him

vulnerable to being lured into the blackmail, Judge Dean noted.

The talented boxer and AFL footballer was from a large Samoan family, with his parents and siblings in full-time work.

“It’s clear you have the support of your family,” Judge Dean said.

Sale was jailed for up to three years and three months with an 18-month non-parole period. His sentence will include his 489 days in pre-sentence detention.

Sale was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Beaconhills offers shining light on community service Beaconhills College's history of generosity has earned it a Casey Australia Day Award.

The school's students volunteered 2200 hours to community service last year, earning the title of 2017 Casey Community Group of the Year.

Their good deeds are too long to list. But they include raising $50,000 for the cancer fundraiser Relay For Life, cooking muffins and for Berwick Vinnies Soup Van and donating solar lights to East Timor.

Students also donated 850 kilograms of rice and pasta - enough for 5000 meals - for Feed Melbourne, made tactile picture books for Insight School for the Blind and Vision Impaired and gave to Casey North CISS's winter coat appeal.

"Kids learn and appreciate by taking action themselves," says the school's citizenship and

service head Clare Tuohy.

"It's very easy to put your hand in your pocket and give $10 or $20 but it's not the same as putting your hand in."

It was wonderful the school was recognised as a local organisation that cared about the needs of others, Ms Tuohy said.

"It's a great opportunity to bring to life the college values of compassion, empathy, and respect," she said.

"Our dream is that every member of our community whether it be staff, students or parents give back to their community in some way."

She said the award inspired the college to undertake even greater deeds.

"In particular, I'm learning more about my local community in Casey and Cardinia.

"There's a great need in our local community."

Cranbourne Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision in Hampton Park last month.

Police say a silver Nissan patrol and a silver Mitsubishi ASX collided at the intersection of Hallam Road and Warana Drive at about 2.20pm on Monday, 18 December.

Police have released a photo from the scene of the crash and hope a witness, pictured wearing a pink top and dark pants, and talking on her mobile phone can contact Cranbourne Police to assist with their enquiries.

Ms Krester said council staff are investigating the cause of these sound quality issues and hope to have it rectified soon.

Yogini helps with out-of-class tangle

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The karma train has arrived fortuitously for stricken customers of a closed-down Narre Warren South yoga studio.

Several customers claim to have paid up for membership and a yoga retreat just days before Now, Yoga studio at Amberly Park shopping centre suddenly closed its doors.

There seemed little recourse for customers - the business's phone, internet and Facebook sites are disconnected, its premises vacant.

On the front door is a notice for more than $13,000 in rent arrears addressed to the studio's tenants Melise Weatherlake and Tony Simpson, with letters from Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal pushed under the door.

To the rescue came Mandala Mindfulness yoga teacher Jacqueline Powell - with an active philosophy of "loving kindness".

Her studio has offered free classes and a free yoga retreat to the students as well as a helping hand for the unemployed studio teachers.

So far up to six customers have made enquiries.

"I thought it's really not fair for (the customers) paying money to do a good thing for themselves, and for that to happen.

"Even if no one takes up the offer, at least I can put a smile on their face.

"It's nice to shine a light. It's not all bad out there."

The offer comes at some personal cost to Ms Powell. "But if I can afford it and have means to do it, why not?

Accused ISIS supporter A Hampton Park disability pensioner accused of funding Islamic State fighters in Syria has reappeared briefly at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

Isa Kocoglu, 43, allegedly sent almost $4000 via PayPal and bank deposits to the cause in 2013 and 2014.

On 29 January, his lawyer told the court they would test digital evidence extracted by police from Mr Kocoglu’s electronic devices.

Mr Kocoglu has been charged with providing support to a person engaged in hostile activity in Syria. The maximum penalty, if found guilty, is 10 years’ jail. He was bailed to appear at a committal hearing on 13 July.

Ms Powell took up yoga six years ago after taking time off work to overcome stress and anxiety.

"It just allows me to function at 100 miles an hour if I need to. It makes me more relaxed, calmer and energetic."

She now teaches the craft together with meditation, while holding a full-time job in property development.

A man and two women have been arrested by police in Narre Warren as part of a gun-and-drug trafficking investigation.

Police allegedly seized firearms, ammunition, drugs, cash, a motorcycle, a Holden Club Sport and other miscellaneous items during a raid of a Narre Warren property on 30 January.

A 24-year-old Narre Warren man was charged with offences including trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine, being a prohibited person possessing a firearm, two counts of motor-vehicle theft and possessing proceeds of crime. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 31 January.

Positive young role model

Selfless acts

By Brendan Rees Ray Bell has devoted his selfless service to the Casey and Cardinia community for almost two decades.

But little did he expect to be awarded the 2018 Casey Senior Citizen of the Year during the Casey Australia Day Awards Ceremony.

"It was unexpected but there are more deserving people around. It's been a bit overwhelming" he said.

The Berwick resident has been volunteering tirelessly with CHIPs (Christians Helping in Primary Schools) for the past 18 years.

He has mentored children, driven buses, sailed boats for the Sailabilty program, taught children robotics and English as a second language, and provided technical assistance for Christmas activities.

About six years ago, Mr Bell says he got his

bus licence when a 24 seater bus was donated to CHIPS. "We work with 60 odd schools in the Casey Cardinia area," Mr Bell explains.

"Usually on a Monday I got to a school and pick up a bus load of kids and we take them to Phillip Island and have a day the adventure resort."

"On a Wednesday we take another school to Lysterfield Lake, we do sailing there. And I help with the program once we're there."

Mr Bell also teaches computer skills to older adults and assists his local church in community work, and is a lifelong learner, particularly in the areas of science and the environment.

"I feel that I've got these skills and it makes sense to share them with other people," he said.

"You get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing people get the advantage of having these lessons."

Katherine Morgan is one not to shy away when it comes to helping her community.

And she loves making a positive impact on people's lives - young or old.

The 21 year-old was named the Casey Young Citizen of Year during the Casey Australia Day Awards presentation at Bunjil Place on Friday, 26 January in recognition of her service to the community.

"I was honoured to win the Young Citizen of the Year Casey award. I wasn't expecting it however I am very grateful for it," she said.

The Beaconsfield resident volunteers with Arise Community Church in Lyndhurst where she supervises and teaches young people.

From taking kids to sports events, to activities in the mountains, trips to the snow, bush walks and wildlife and nature education field trips - Ms Morgan ensures she is always there.

"We go out to different locations in Victoria.

That gets them out to travel and do something exciting with other kids," she said.

"We also do working bees which mostly is the adults and the teenagers."

She says they go to people's houses in South East Melbourne and help with gardening and general household cleaning.

"They get super excited, so it's always a new experience for them and they get to meet new people."

But without the help of others, she says she wouldn't be able to achieve as much as she does.

"There's so many other people that help me do the things that I do - not for the acknowledgement.

"I do a lot and might organise a lot but I wouldn't be able to do it if I didn't have those other people helping me. It's a team player job."

Ms Morgan has worked full time as a disability support coach at Wallara organisation for the past four years.

She says she originally planned to be a primary school teacher but after working one year at Wallara, Ms Morgan knew she had found her calling.

"I love it. I was actually really close to my grandparents and lived with them."

"I actually requested to work with senior age clients. There was a job opportunity available for me there, so really happy."

When she is not doing this, she also gives up her holidays to volunteer in different countries supporting disadvantaged communities by donating food, clothing, money and time.

OAM for a dream-catcher

By Brendan Rees Cranbourne grandmother Joan Vosen never imagined her passion for helping young people achieve their university dreams would one day add an OAM to her name.

But the 76 year-old, who today was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia as part of the Australia Day honours, has well deserved the title.

Having worked at Melbourne University for the past three decades, she received the award for her service in education.

"It's very humbling, it's wonderful," Ms Vosen said. "I'm very, very honoured. It was thrilled to be nominated."

"I just wish my parents were alive - they were very community minded. They would be thrilled," she said.

For the past 12 years, Ms Vosen has been dedicated in her role as the state administrator for the Victorian Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee, which offers outstanding university students the opportunity to receive a scholarship for post-graduate studies.

"I just take my job very seriously. I absolutely love it and I feel that I've helped very clever young people in some very small way."

The scholarship application process can be quite long and daunting but Ms Vosen says she's always willing to help applicants.

"I always try to put myself into someone else's shoes and make them feel as comfortable as I can."

By the time the final interviews come around she says she gets to know applicants on a personal level: "We might be travelling this road together for three or four months."

She recalled a time when she helped a young man who had to borrow someone's suit after ripping his own.

"I was tugging at the sleeves of his suit," she says. "The next interview, I said 'please give me your suit pants and I'll get them mended.'

Anyway, he ended up being a Victorian Rhodes Scholar."

Few have given as much to Dandenong Basketball Association as stalwart basketball administrator and referee Ron Burgess.

As a ‘labour of love’, the Cranbourne East 80-year-old has ploughed in up-to-12 hour days as president and basketball manager.

His time in the sport spans 68 years, including at national and state league levels.

Mr Burgess receives due recognition for his service, announced as a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2018 Australia Day Honours List.

He is renowned as a long-serving referee and lead referee coach in the National Basketball League, officiating in the 1981 NBL Grand Final between Launceston Casino City and Nunawading Spectres.

Basketball Victoria, Dandenong Basketball Association and Dandenong Basketball Referees Association have bestowed life membership.

Mr Burgess started playing the sport when Australian basketball was in its “rough and ready” infancy in 1949.

That was when one of the few local venues was - incredibly - on the first floor of the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne.

A safety net had to be erected to catch players in case they fell over the mezzanine handrail.

He opted for basketball over the all-persuasive Aussie Rules partly because of his skinny build.

“I was one of those kids that got to the front for milk at school at 10 o’clock in the morning.”

A number of hard hits on the footy field delivered by student-cum-trucking magnate Lindsay Fox confirmed his choice.

He met his wife Lesley through basketball, while he was refereeing womens games in Kensington.

Singing for support A Noble Park aged care centre will host a new study into singing.

Uniting AgeWell is looking for people in the South-East to be involved in the project about the therapeutic benefits of singing groups.

The University of Melbourne-led ReminiSing study will allow people with dementia living at home and their family members or carers to join a singing group.

During the 20-week study starting in March, the Remini-Sing group will meet weekly to sing old favourites and new songs, and learn how to use music at home.

Austin Health piloted the research model last year and preliminary results indicated great benefits for the people with dementia.

University of Melbourne research fellow Dr Jeanette Tamplin is leading the study and said the most surprising thing about pilot was the great benefits to carers, too.

"The primary aim of the pilot was to support people living with dementia in the community," she said.

"The carers of people with dementia all commented on the inclusiveness of the group and the fact that they felt so supported and understood.

"They got so much joy out of doing something together with their partner/mother/father or whoever they were there with."

Uniting AgeWell is seeking participants aged 60 or older who have been diagnosed with dementia, and a family member or carer.

Once selected, participants will be randomly assigned to either a Remini-Sing group or a control group.

Health and wellbeing assessments will be completed with each participant before the study and at weeks 10 and 20.

The popular children's writer congratulated some of the top bookworms taking part in Summer Reading Club in Casey and Cardinia Shire.

"If we can jumpstart a life-long love of reading then I'm there," he said.

"Events like Summer Reading Club foster a whole new generation of readers and we need even more events like this."

About 800 children from eight Casey-Cardinia Libraries branches took part in the 201718 event.

Libraries chief executive Chris Buckingham said the event encouraged young people to read for enjoyment, not just for school.

The club is a free national program led by the State Library of Queensland.

The singing study is for people with dementia and their loved ones or carers. with dementia went to a day centre for respite, quite often they didn't have the capacity to share what happened on their day out.

"This program allows the carer or family member to share something meaningful and introduce music they enjoy to each other, as

well as the rest of the group," she said.

Singing groups will be held at Uniting AgeWell's Community Services, 1312 Heatherton Road, Noble Park, and some other locations.

A vibrantly-painted piano has been installed in Bunjil's plaza as part of the Play Me, I'm Yours event across Melbourne.

Working on the instrument were five artists from Casey Aboriginal Gathering Place: Joy Sellars, Heather Kennedy, Lucille Boothey, Natasha Smith and Greg Matthews.

Each of them were assigned the various panels, sides and seats for decoration.

Another piano decorated by MacKillop Family Services has been stationed at Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne.

The event is presented in partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne and City of Casey.

It runs until 4 February.

Holt residents honoured the Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne.

By Brendan Rees The 2018 Holt Australia Day Awards were presented at the Day of Nations celebrations in Hampton Park today, with a large crowd of families and friends turning out to support the recipients.

Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne honoured 27 outstanding individuals and seven local organisations for their contribution to our community on Australia Day. Many in the crowd waved their Australia flags as they cheered on their unsung heroes.

During his speech, Mr Bryne said the Australia Day Awards was an opportunity for the community to recognise those who contributed their time and energy to do valuable volunteer work.

“Australia Day is a wonderful day when we can recognise those people who contribute to the community and make our community a better place,” he said.

“I congratulate all those receiving a Holt Australia Day Award for their exemplary community spirit and endless hours of volunteer work making our community a better and safer place to live.”

“These people do not get the same accolades as celebrities in the media but in their own quiet Australian way they do tremendous work and make other people’s lives better,” said Mr Byrne.

The Australia Day Awards were an opportunity to recognise people like Aaron Grant who has volunteered tirelessly on the committee for Cranbourne Public Hall.

Mr Grant said he was absolutely wrapped to be presented an award.

“I love what I do around the community and the fact people acknowledge it, makes me more determined to continue”.

LOCAL GIFT DRIVE BRINGS HOPE TO NEEDY FAMILIES ONCE again the local community got behind the Parklea Gift Drive initiative, donating hundreds of Christmas presents, and bringing joy to so many disadvantaged children in our local community.

Throughout December, locals generously placed a variety of gifts and toys under Christmas trees at Arena Shopping Centre and Timbertop estate sales suite.

The 2017 gift drive was the most successful to date, as Arena Shopping Centre’s large donation boxes were consistently refilled with an abundance of gifts and toys.

By Nick Creely AFL WOMEN’S LEAGUE 2018 PREVIEW - ROUND 1 MELBOURNE v GWS GIANTS Saturday 3 February, Casey Fields, 5.05pm TV: Foxtel, AFL app It’s only days away from the second season of AFL Women’s, and for Melbourne, it’s just about building their momentum, and ensuring they are ready to fire.

The Demons; coached by Mick Stinear once again; were inconsistent in 2017, and despite possessing some of the most elite talent in the competition, finished third on the ladder, missing out on the grand final by just 16.3 per cent after drawing level on points with eventual premiers, Adelaide.

They kick start their season at home in Cranbourne; against the GWS Giants; a side that finished bottom of the ladder and struggled with a lack of genuine scoring power, finishing with an average of just 22 points per game.

Comparing that to the Demons; who managed to average 37 points a game; and there is a clear difference in class and scoring prowess.

But last year, the Giants won just one game,

coincidentally against the Demons, in a match where they were restricted to a horribly inaccurate 1.9 The Demons will already be one it’s brightest young talents for the season, with emerging forward Ainslie Kemp rupturing her ACL in a training mishap.

Kemp played four games for the Demons in the opening season of the competition, and will be sorely missed in the forward line.

But apart from the unfortunate injury, the Demons enter Saturday’s clash raring to go, and are ready to unleash a more energetic and confident game style.

Boom recruit, and local Cranbourne star Bianca Jakobsson, is also expected to play in defence this season, with the switch to the backline during the pre-season adding an elite marker to that area of the ground.

LAST TIME THEY MET: GWS Giants 3.2(20) defeated Melbourne 1.9(15) at Blacktown ISP Oval KEY PLAYERS: DAISY PEARCE is the most complete player in the competition, and the Demons skipper will once again be a crucial factor through the midfield with her class and elite football brain, and was comfortably their best player last season.

JESSICA DAL POS who is a teammate of Pearce’s at Darebin in the VFLW competition, is a player the Demons must shut down and an asset for the Giants. If the Demons; as expected; are too comfortably have the Giants’ measure, ensuring Dal Pos doesn’t relish in the clearances will make the four points a formality.

Warriors mighty in final battle for valhalla dream finish

By Russell Bennett While the West Gippsland Warriors’ under-21s side were unable to record a dream finish to this year’s Neil Wright Shield campaign, the young team showed throughout the tournament just what it meant to be a part of a cause bigger than its own.

Punching well above their weight throughout the competition, the Warriors advanced to Sunday’s final at Schramms Reserve in Doncaster against Southern Bayside, who they’d defeated in last year’s tournament.

But Southern Bayside had their measure this time around - first defeating them in Round 3, and then again in the decider.

Unlike the preceding rounds of the competition, Sunday’s game was held as a Twenty20 clash due to the predicted scorching weather.

Batting first, Southern Bayside amassed an imposing 2/209 from their 20 overs with three half-centuries from Rahul Shanmugam (79), berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Elliott Bradley (74 not out) and William Kelly (50 not out).

Shanmugam was particularly devastating consistently clearing the front foot and going large towards the nets on the leg-side boundary next to the scoreboard.

He ultimately came unstuck to a great catch just inside the midwicket fence but was already given three lives to dropped catches prior to that.

Bradley and Kelly followed his lead late in the innings, taking the Southern Bayside beyond 200.

In the West Gippsland reply, stand-in skipper Travis Wheller (filling in for Zac Chaplin) and regular Cardinia team mate Matt Welsh opened the batting and looked to put the foot down from the outset, but this just wasn’t the Warriors’ day as Welsh (22) was forced to retire hurt after painfully dislocating his kneecap.

Despite the best efforts of Welsh, Upper Beaconsfield’s Kulith Rabel, Merinda Park’s

Mitch Thomas, and Pakenham’s Jack Melbourne, the Warriors were dismissed for 117.

Still, this was a tournament from which the young West Gippsland players should hold their heads extremely high - with two wins over the might of the Mornington Peninsula, and another over Ringwood District.

Coach of the Warriors, WGCA legend Greg Bethune, said: “The group was sensational.

They did the little things well, and they took pride in playing for West Gippsland”.

Bethune added that the learning experience from the tournament would prove invaluable to the players.

“They’ve got the ability - it’s just how they can adapt to any situation,” he said.

This year’s Warriors side was a particularly young crop, with the bulk of the list under 20.

Though the Warriors didn’t have a player selected in the team of the tournament, Thomas was the leading wicket-taker with 11 scalps while Wheller and Welsh both scored in excess

of 100 runs.

Bethune was also particularly impressed with the group’s trio of glovemen - Cardinia’s Ben Parrott, Upper Beaconsfield’s Jack McHale, and Tooradin’s Ned Harrison - and the leadership shown by both Chaplin and Wheller.

“I’ve coached a lot of the boys before and they just stay true to themselves and push each other to deliver,” Bethune said of the group.

“Everyone had a moment doing something inspirational, and they dared to be brave.”

Bethune also thanked Stephen Pearson, who was a key force behind the side throughout the tournament.

Patto undecided on fate

By Nick Creely As Dandenong chase the ultimate glory in Premier Cricket - premierships in both one day and two cricket - this season may very well be the last swansong of one its finest ever players.

Darren Pattinson - the big, bustling quick who famously made his test debut for England in 2008, may retire at the conclusion of the Premier Cricket season, but it's definitely not due to a lack of form.

After taking four years of elite cricket to focus on his greyhounds, the Pearcedale trainer, who also played 62 first class games, returned to the competition this season, and has taken 22 wickets at an average of 15, including a man of the match performance in the Panthers' one day flag against Carlton, but hasn't decided whether his body could handle any more cricket after this year.

"I've been bowling well, the ball's been coming out pretty good," he said.

"I was a bit worried at the start of the season that I might be past it, but it's coming out really well at the moment.

"I'd like to think (I can keep playing next year), but it's really hard at 38 years of age it's a week by week proposition for me at the moment with my body." While Pattinson will leave a hole of experience at the club when he hangs up the whites, he said the talent within the club is as good as it's ever been.

"We've got some really quality bowlers at the club, and at the end of the day, I don't want to be holding anyone back," he said.

"If I feel I am, I will definitely step away and move on. "We've got some young bowlers playing in the seconds and the thirds, and they will all play ones- I've been here now for 18 years, and this is the best bowling group for a long time, and the best groups of batsmen we've had.

"We've predominantly been a bowling club, and the batsmen in the twos are getting the job done, so we've got depth all over the grades."

By Russell Bennett After an ego-crushing wooden spoon in 2017 and lack of committed players, the St Francis Xavier 'X-Men' have undergone a rebuild both on and off-field in an aim to once again be a power club in the VAFA. With a new president and new committee brings a confidence that 2018 will be a big year for the club.

New president and 2015 premiership player Wayne Delaland is both excited and nervous about how far the group can go.

"Having been at the club for seven years (and 100 game player), I have experienced the highs of premierships, multiple finals appearances and the lows of league demotion, lack of playing numbers and a wooden spoon in 2017," he said, honestly. "We are a proud club and have a history of success."

The 2017 season left a sour taste in the mouths of many, especially with Delaland.

"There are certainly parts of the club that we didn't handle well and this attributed to low morale and poor results," he said.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about being a first-time president. There are many parts of the role I'm yet to learn but my committee and I will accept the challenge of getting us back to finals and higher divisions.

"When we won the Division 4 premiership in 2011, the club had strong leadership at all levels; president, committee, coaches and playing group. If we are going to return to that level of success, I knew we had to get the best people to the club, from a coaching and committee level."

The first change came with new coaching appointments in both grades. Scott Mackenzie was appointed senior coach, having built successful teams at Hallam. He has brought new blood and a real sense of belief to the XMen and is very clear on his goals for the club, particularly being so passionate about player development.

"Scott is a great communicator and we know he has the ability to develop players at all levels," Delaland said.

"The club believes Scott can make good players great, and work with our young group to develop them into senior footballers.

Most coaches will focus on the players they can bring with them, whereas Scott is eager to work with our core group of players, most in the age bracket of 24 to 28-years-old."

Josh Lafranchi has taken up a senior assistant's role alongside Mackenzie after coaching the X-Men in 2017. With a decorated playing career in local leagues, he will work closely with player development.

David Antonielli has returned to St Francis as reserves coach, having won a best and fairest at the club in 2011.

With the club averaging 40 players at preChristmas training sessions, the signs are looking promising for 2018.

"Our training numbers are increasing and there is a real buzz around the club," Delaland said.

"This level of excitement hasn't been felt since our 2011 (Division 4) premiership year.

"We are seeing a mix of new and existing players, which brings a confidence that the XMen are finals bound once again."

The club is also seeking new sponsors and would welcome a conversation with any interested businesses. The X-Men are looking to revamp their club with upgraded playing facilities and clubrooms and any support would be appreciated. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Swans taught harsh lesson

By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne quick Jackson Fry summed it up perfectly in the wake of a horror day for the club on Saturday, with Footscray needing only six more wickets to achieve an outright victory.

The Swans batted for just 47 overs on day one of its clash after being sent in at Casey Fields, losing 14 wickets and scoring just 123 runs for the day.

"Really good sides, and really good players, go on with it and get the job done, and we can't do that this year," Fry said after a tough day for the club.

While there is a clear experience difference between the 18th placed Swans and the fifth placed Dogs, the Swans lasted just 90 minutes of the first session before being bundled out for a lowly 61.

Hamish Winter-Irving (2/23) and Jonah Koch (3/20) controlled proceedings with the new ball, with youngster Austin Heldt (0) edging the ball into the sticky gloves of Dylan Kight (five catches) in the first over, setting the tone.

Michael Wallace (4), Lachlan Sperling (4) and a more defiant Dev Pollock (13) all fell to some clever bowling, with Sperling and Pollock forced into false strokes through some movement off the pitch.

Despite Luke Manders (21) looking classy in his return game, with some cracking drives that netted him five boundaries, his dismissal at the hands of Lucas Dredge (5/17) sparked an almighty collapse that saw the Swans lose their last five wickets for just 11 runs.

The Dogs lost Matt Underwood (6) early in the chase, but carved boundaries at an alarming rate, declaring after just 46 overs with the score ticking over to 7/231.

The Swans had 24 overs left to face for the day, and were left red faced as they were quickly 4/30.

"Very disappointing, there is probably not many positives to take out of that day's play; being sent in and being knocked over in 22 overs makes it a disappointing day for the club," Fry said.

"Hopefully we can fight back; avoiding outright will be tough, but we'll put our best foot forward and try and end the game on a high."

Now the Bears are hanging on to their position in fourth by a thread, as challengers emerge to pinch a finals spot from under their feet.

After winning the toss and batting, Bears quick James Wilcock (1/25) struck with the first ball of the match, removing steady opener Brendan Morris to put the Bloodhounds immediately on the back foot.

Ian Daniel (32) - fresh off a stunning, record breaking knock the previous week, combined with young star Jakob Woinarski (38), building a partnership of 49 runs before an edge off the bowling of Cory Bevan (1/12) brought the end of Daniel.

A mixed bag for Narre

For the second time this season, Wilma Stevenson's Narre Warren Division 2 team had a heartbreaking one-shot loss.

Leo McGreary was a picture of concentration for Narre Warren.

Division 5 headed to Fountain Gate and turned their recent form around with an eightshot win over Willow Lodge. Glen Cadman, Ernesto Vergara, David Wilkinson and John Green scored best with a 21-13 win; and Michael Graham, Peter Castricum, Alan Mark and Stan Robinson won 19-16. Jim Kempf, Tracey Storm, Jos van Hout and Ralph Devonshire (15-16); and Stan Bulmer, Colin Groom, Geoff Miller and Norm Hosmer (20-22) both

win 24-14. Arthur Fitt, Wayne Grimsey, Paul McNamara and Andy Tobler also won (20-14) but Diane Peterson, Sharon Bull, Graham Peterson and Brent Grigg went down 14-34.

Narre Warren (3) 16-88 defeated Waverley Golf (3) 2-70.

Division 7 had to give a walkover due to having an insufficient number of players available.

Berwick puts on a show BERWICK BOWLS Shepparton Park arm bowler Ross Higgins and rising star Max Goldsmith (Mulgrave Country Club) have teamed up to take out the 2018 Bowls Victoria Integrated Pairs tournament.

Higgins and Goldsmith triumphed in the event hosted at Berwick Bowling Club and sponsored by Travelling Jack Bowling Supplies, winning a tournament which attracted a record number of entries.

An impressive 47 pairs took part, up from 42 last year and 20 entries in the first year in 2012. This year included 10 new bowlers with a disability who had not previously taken part.

Bowls Victoria was glowing in its praise of the Berwick Bowling Club and had special thanks for Mark Walker, Jeff Janetski and Kay Crook, who made sure every detail was in place regarding the greens, the clubhouse, the catering and the service from all the volunteers from the club that were on hand to assist with umpiring and anything else that was required on the day.

NARRE WARREN BOWLS Narre Warren's Midweek Pennant bowls teams had another mixed day, including a strong win, a bad loss, and a bye.

The Division 2 team headed to Fountain Gate to face Berwick and had a very good 43shot win. Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, Alan Mark and Keith Mark lost their first two ends before going on a scoring spree, winning 17 of the last 19 to win 33-6.

Geoff Ampt, Judy Naughton, Eric Sydenham and Wilma Stevenson won 10 of the first 11 ends on the way to winning 23-7. Between the two rinks they only lost 10 of the 42 ends played. Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, Philip Howard and Rod Lane had the tough game and drew 20-20.

Narre Warren (1) 15-76 defeated Berwick (4) 1-33.

Division 3 headed to Cranbourne RSL and suffered a big loss. Paul McNamara, Pauline Kempf, Rose Rasmussen and Geoff Miller lost 10-25; while Truus Henneman, Nancy Pugh, Nick Filius and Peter Castricum (18-31); and Pam Uren, Andy Tobler, Micki Horton and Peter Groom (11-40) also lost.

Narre Warren (2) 0-39 lost to Cranbourne RSL (2) 16-96.

Meanwhile, Division 1 (six-a-side) had a bye.

For the second time this season Narre Warren's Division 2 team had a heartbreaking one-shot loss to Berwick. Joe Selfridge, Philip Howard, Rod Lane and Cam Lee did everything they could with a 23-9 win, helped by Mark Groom, Eric Sydenham, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson, who won 18-16. However Geoff Ampt, Carl Lapham, Peter Hayden and Keith Mark (13-21 loss); and John Wright, Wally Finlayson, Percy Herath and Zak Storm (16-25 loss) could not find the extra shots required.

Narre Warren (1) 4-70 lost to Berwick (3) 1471.

The tournament features pairs in which one must be a bowler with a disability. It's a unique event that focuses on inclusion, with bowlers with a disability who enter able to team with a clubmate, friend or family member.

Berwick was ably represented by David Warner and John Horwood, and Campbell Walker and Steve Ellard. The club's teams both made it through to the quarter finals stage.

PENNANT - SATURDAY 27 JANUARY Conditions for Pennant Bowls last Saturday were on the hot side to say the least. Faced with high humidity and scorching temperatures, some bowlers found the conditions very challenging.

Berwick hosted four matches on home turf and came out winners on all four contests. Of the away games there were some very close matches with the 2s going down by only three shots. Only the 8s managed to come home victors after their match played at Beaumaris.
