There are some amazing people within our community and this year’s Australia Day Awards proves exactly that.

Dandenong Ranges residents representing both the passion of youth and decades of experience are among a select few in the Yarra Ranges whose contributions to their local and wider communities have been recognised with Australia Day awards.

Amongst those inspirational people were stand-outs Beverley McAllister OAM from The Patch, who received the Yarra Ranges Shire’s Mayor’s Lifetime achievement award in recognition of her dedication to the Dandenong Ranges Music Council, and Greg Boland, awarded with a Medal of the order of Australia for his substantial service to the community of Melbourne in community development.

The shire Australia Day awards held at Montrose Town Centre on Australia Day recognise and reward members of the community who have a consistent record of excellence, have made outstanding achievements in their field, and/or have contributed significantly to the growth and development of the region.

This year’s recipients are nothing short of inspirational and are among a diverse range of award winners from across the shire whose contributions to making their communities a better place in which to live has been a pervading desire.

For Beverly McAllister, the lifetime achievement award recognises nothing less than what can be described as a lifetime dedicated to improving access to music-based programs. It was Ms McAllister who in 1976 helped start a journey that’s trajectory would create opportunities to thousands of music lovers and result in the creation of the DRMC. Upon receiving the Yarra Ranges Shire’s Mayor’s Lifetime achievement award, she said she was humbled and surprised and that it had made her reflect upon the past 42 years of the DRMC and all that they had accomplished.

“I had absolutely no idea; it’s not something you think about ... It’s a lovely surprise,” she said.

Music, dance and history

By Derek Schlennstedt While thousands of Victorians marked Australia Day as a day of celebration, hundreds of Hills residents came together on Friday 26 January at Belgrave's Brothwick Park to instead commemorate a day of survival.

Showcasing a blend of Aboriginal music, dance, food and stories, the 11th annual Belgrave Survival Day once again celebrated Indigenous culture and the survival of Australia's First Nations People - as well as reminding residents why it has become such an enduring event of the Dandenong Ranges.

A cast of hundreds came to show their respect and solidarity with Lyster Ward Councillor Mike Clarke opening the event.

Speaking to the Mail, Councillor Clarke said he felt very strongly about 'restoring Aboriginal rights and entitlement to land,' and commented on the success of the Belgrave Survival Day event, "I'm just so proud of this community which gets behind it and shows their interest in aboriginal history and concern for the lack of support, and the lack of recognition," Cr Clarke said.

"This to me is an important event for recognition and to see a community turn out like this means we need to do something about it."

Tim Kanoa, who was MC said in its eleventh year, the event continues to attract more and more people and spoke of the day's significance.

"It's in its eleventh year now and ultimately just by the numbers of people turning up, the kids running around, families sitting on the trees, it's relaxed atmosphere  - people are enjoying it, it's great."

because this is their country, but also all the other mobs who have fought hard to maintain a strong culture of existence here in Australia against what we would call adversity."

Today is about making sure we are at the forefront on an important day for the country and that our culture is alive and our heritage is strong."

That strong culture and heritage was certainly shown with various indigenous musical performances taking place throughout the day.

Though, music was just one part of the afternoon event - a Welcome to Country and traditional smoking ceremony was also conducted by Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson,

followed by traditional dances.

To end the day it was Gawurra Gaykamangu a Yolngu artist hailing from Milingimbi (Yurrwi), North East Arnhem Land, whose songs performed in his own language of Gupapuyngu pointed to the spirit and nature of his island home and made a poignant reminder of the significance of what 'home' means.

‘Crushing’ results on cars

By Derek Schlennstedt Two people have been arrested in an anti-hoon operation on Wednesday 24 January, when police executed four warrants across parts of Melbourne, including Ferntree Gully.

The operation was part of Taskforce Regarder which comprises a team of detectives, highway patrol members and intelligence officers working to disrupt hoon gatherings and gather evidence against highly organised offending groups.

The arrests come after the crushing of eight vehicles on Friday 19 January that were seized by police following hoon-meets.

One of those vehicles was a grey Holden

sedan which was crushed after a 23-year-old Belgrave South man was charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury.

The man was convicted in June 2016 where he was fined $1500 and had his licence cancelled and disqualified for 12 months.

Det Insp Daly, said that Victorians engaging in this type of hoon behaviour will face the full force of the law and that those taking part should take notice of the cars that are being crushed.

“My message to those that want to participate in this type of illegal hooning and skid activity is have a look at the crushed cars in today’s news, because that’s what’s going to

happen to your car if you want to do this sort of thing,” he said.

After the morning’s operation, two men have been arrested in relation to planning and organising intentional high-risk driving between June and September 2017.

A 22-year-old Bentleigh East woman and 22-year-old Endeavour Hills woman have also been charged with conduct endangering serious injury, incitement; hinder police and a number of high risk driving offences.

Detective Inspector Mick Daly said the offenders were looking at serious criminal charges, including conduct endangering serious injury.

“Police have no tolerance for people who plan, organise or engage in deliberate, risky behaviour at hoon meets,” Det Insp Daly said.

“These irresponsible people, including the event organisers and drivers, place their lives and the lives of others at serious risk.”

“Today the focus was for four search warrants regarding organising the illegal street hoon activity, we’ll be alleging that the four organisers did just that - they organised people to gather on mass, and participate in these illegal and highly dangerous activities.”

IN BRIEF Search for person who left items at police station On 17 January, a number of items were placed at the front doorstep of the Monbulk Police station.

The items included folders containing paperwork, and police are interested in speaking to the individual who dropped the items off.

Kallista Deli break-in Sometime between 9.30pm on 21 January and 6.50am on 22 January the front glass door of the Kallista Deli was smashed.

The door was smashed as part of a break-in, with police reporting that unknown persons have then entered the premises and taken a small quantity of money.

Crime scene officers attended the scene and Monbulk Police station is seeking any information relating to the incident.

If anyone knows or heard anything they are urged to contact Monbulk Police station on 9756 6266.

Police are seeking any information relating to the theft and have released details of the vehicle in the hope that citizens may have noticed it or seen it recently.

The vehicle is a custom designed Nissan Patrol wagon, which has been modified to a single cab tray ute and has a converted Holden V8 engine in it. The vehicle is valued at $45,000.

Arrested, interviewed and charged On 16 January, a 40 year-old male from The Patch was arrested, interviewed and charged for criminal damage.

He is alleged to have damaged the Monbulk National Australia Bank front door on 8 January.

It is alleged the male damaged the glass front door, when he kicked it.

The man was released pending summons and will appear at court at a later date.

Car pursuit called off On 12 January around 9.50am, Olinda police were travelling to Monbulk when they attempted to intercept a green Subaru on Baynes Park Road, Monbulk.

The vehicle took evasive action to avoid police, and was being driven dangerously, causing police to disengage from the pursuit.

The green Subaru Liberty was lost in the vicinity of Camms Road, Monbulk, and police allege it had stolen number plates.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Olinda police on 9751 1241.

Custom Nissan Patrol stolen On 10 January sometime between 9.30pm and 5.15am on January 11 a custom Nissan patrol was stolen from along Monbulk Main road.

Tecoma man arrested at Knox A 42-year-old man from Tecoma has been charged with being a prohibited person carrying an imitation firearm and six counts of resisting arrest.

It is alleged he was seen walking around Knox shopping centre with a firearm on 19 January.

Footage of the arrest was released by nearby citizens who videoed the incident which clearly shows a heavily tattooed man wearing a wig being arrested by several cops at one of the cafes in Knox.

The man has been bailed and will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 11 July.

Meanwhile, other major recipients include Healesville environmentalists Bob Anderson, founder and recently retired president of the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters, who was honoured with the 2018 Citizen of the Year, and Peter Hannaford, founder of the Judith Eardley Save Wildlife Association, who received the 2018 Environmentalist of the Year.

Gruyere CFA volunteer, the late Don Bigham was recognised for his outstanding contribution across a number of organisations with the Ian De La Rue Award for Community Leadership.

At the younger end of the spectrum, 17 year-old Hannah Mahoney is Yarra Ranges Shire’s Young Citizen of the Year, recognised for her leadership and community work in Upper Yarra, and the Ken McIntosh Memorial Award for Young Environmental Achiever of the Year went to Brock and Ben from Belgrave for their involvement in the Environmental Education for Kids! (EEK!) program. The Mooroolbark Umbrella Group (MUG) which has worked to improve Mooroolbark for the past 15 years was also recognised as Community Group of the Year.

In addition, certificate recipients included Geoff Brown from Mount Evelyn, Ian Townsley from Mooroolbark, Maureen Halit, from Millgrove and Lyn Hannam from Warburton.

When honouring the awardees Mayor Len Cox commended the recipients for their efforts in helping to create a better Yarra Ranges.

“These inspirational people come from many different backgrounds and have different lifestyles, but are driven by the same goal - to make the Yarra Ranges an even better place to live,” Mayor Cox said.

“Between them, our recipients have given their communities more than 150 years of service.”

As founder of Friends of the Helmeted Hon-

eyeater (FoHH) 28 years ago, and as president for 20 of those years Bob Anderson is certainly one of those recipients spoken about by Mayor Len Cox, and Bob has led and supported FoHH members in their work across the Yellingbo recreation reserve.

Bob, awarded the 2018 Citizen of the Year has been a driving force for the group, overseeing hundreds of volunteers, donating thousands of hours to the cause of improving habitat for the critically endangered Victorian bird emblem and raising awareness of the bird’s plight.

Though, he commented that there was a personal sense of achievement, he said overwhelmingly it was about what had been achieved as a collaboration of many people and groups.

“It’s great ... but I would rather it was for the Friends,” Bob said when asked about the award.

“When I think about all the volunteers, all the groups and think about world-wide volunteers, it makes you feel a little better in this strange world of ours.

“When I look back and see what the organisation has been able to do, the wonderful nursery which now employs five people, our education program ... one example of where we’re going, and what has happened over the years is that we have two pairs of birds that have produced lots of fledglings in an area where they have not been for many years, and where we have had no influence, such as supplementary feeding.

“That’s what we hope will happen across the Yellingbo Conservation Area - that the birds do it themselves and that we have protected the habitat to enable that to happen.”

One doesn’t need to look far from our own community to see the impressive individuals who have significantly improved many aspects of the Yarra Ranges ,and this year as part of the Australia Day awards at Montrose another ten people coming from England, the United States of America, India, South Africa and Zambia will become Australian citizens and part of this great community and call the Yarra Ranges home.

Bye bye pines with Rob Bast, chainsaw carving champion

What is something people don’t know about you?

I like to restore old hurricane lanterns and tools, but mainly old tools. So getting all the rust off, replacing handles, giving them a good sharpen that sort of thing; it’s a bit of fun.

What has been your most memorable moment?

The birth of my boy.

What would your final meal be?

I’d have to say a feed of Japanese. Love it, sushi and all that.

What event, past, present or future would you like to witness?

The big bang would pretty cool to check out, see where it all started.

What is your favourite movie?

Probably crocodile Dundee; the first one of course.

What is your favourite book?

It’s a series of books actually; it was Australian

bushcraft by Ron Edwards. It was basically a series of books with interesting places around Australia, old tools, old skills, so that we don’t lose sight of the past.

What five guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

My wife and I do this all the time and we have a list of ten people so I’d have to say Billy Connolly, Hugh Jackman, Dawn French - but only as the Vicar of Dibley of course, Michelangelo, and David Attenborough.

What is your overwhelming passion?

Creating things, it’s the chainsaw carving, metal sculpting, some leather work, restoring tools, making things from scratch is what I really enjoy doing.

What are you working on right now?

At the moment, some sculptures for Manningham City council.

THREE … plants that attract native bees

Sweet Bursaria (Bursaria spinosa). A shrub that grows to about two metres and has masses of white flowers. Just sit back and watch the little critters, including butterflies, make a bee-line for this one!

Golden Everlasting (Xerochrysum bracteatum). Along with its “sibling” Sticky Everlasting, this is another plant that is dual-purpose - native bees and butterflies love these bright and beautiful yellow daisy-like plants, also called ‘paper daisies’.

Grey Parrot Pea (Dillwynia cinerascens). A real show-off with its orange, red and bright yellow native pea flowers, bees, and their friends the butterflies, can’t go past them!

The removal of exotic weeds at Richards Reserve at Montrose will continue this week, following 500 towering pine trees being removed in May 2013.

Pinus radiata continues to be one of Council’s significant weed threats with winged seeds and pine needles that fall to the ground and supress native species, stopping them from establishing.

Richards Reserve has regenerated with feathered friends, possums and echidnas returning to call the Montrose site home.

Yellow tailed black cockatoos have returned to feast on the seeds of blackwood trees. The native plant Cherry Ballart has naturally appeared and Eastern Rosellas have been spotted since the removal.

More than 6000 native indigenous plants from volunteer based nursery Candlebark, were planted by Council employees, contractors, environmental volunteers, schools and families over the past few years.

The Friends of Richards Reserve and Montrose Environmental Group have supported weed control and planting works. Mount Evelyn Christian School and Montrose Primary School also participated in planting.

Mayor Len Cox said the trees were removed five years ago after requests from residents and environmental volunteer groups, Council’s Trees and Bushland teams.

“The 24 trees being removed this week are from an area within the reserve that has better quality vegetation which needs protecting, next to the oak tree and picnic seat,” Cr Cox said.

“Continuation of the project will maintain the reserve’s biodiversity values, part of which involves removing exotic weed species.

“Council will continue to invest in removing the trees to ensure that native species can re-colonise and that the reserve is maintained for everyone to enjoy.”

Retired inspector’s OAM

By Derek Schlennstedt ‘Them and us’ - the term was often the prescribed description of the yawning gap between police and Aboriginal relations, and reflects a period where the relationship between Aboriginal people and police in Australia included harsh treatment and seemingly excessive sentences.

Though enduring legacies have been left by previous police officers and Aboriginal Elders, whose desire it was to improve and break down the barriers between police and Aboriginals.

One of those police officers with a desire to implement positive change in his community was Greg Boland, from Emerald.

He was more surprised than anyone when on Australia Day he received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service and development of community programs to improve Aboriginal and police relations in the 1980s and ’90s.

Mr Boland who said he was surprised and truly honoured to receive the prestigious medal, which recognised his contributions while Inspector at Dandenong Police station.

“At the time, in 1988 there was a Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody ... there was nothing formal with Victoria Police, so I created an order to look into alleviating deaths in custody,” he said.

“I worked with the Aboriginal Elders out in the Dandenong area and from there things developed and grew, and I ran a number of Aboriginal and police youth camps.”

With over 1200 Aboriginals in and around the Dandenong area at the time, it was Mr Boland’s desire not only to reduce deaths in custody, but also to assist Aboriginals in the legal processes surrounding imprisonment.

‘Operation Comforting Hand’, a program of Mr Boland’s own design was just one of many introduced at the Dandenong Police unit to

give indigenous people special consideration for bail over minor offences - mindful of the trauma of incarceration.

His determination and contribution in ensuring Aboriginals were helped rather than hindered has earnt Mr Boland a number of accolades over the years including a Winston Churchill Fellowship (to research international policing reconciliation practices).

Though the OAM is a much appreciated award, Mr Boland said the real rewards were the results which showed that for the Dandenong district no Aboriginal deaths in custody were recorded while he was inspector. The station was set as an example for many other police units around Australia.

“I’ve always looked at things in that I knew that I was never ever going to change the world dramatically, but if I could just chip away a little bit, I knew that I could improve things,” he said.

“I knew there needed to be an improvement in the relationship between Aboriginal people and the police.

“It was almost like there were two sides - them and us and so that needed to be improved.

“I saw that we needed to break down the barriers, and from that I worked with a lot of Aboriginal Elders ... I have a lot of respect for the Aboriginal community.”

“I know I’m not going to change the world but by identifying there’s an issue somewhere, we can chip away at it and hopefully improve things.”

Education boom exciting One of the best parts of my job as Minister for Education is to travel much of the state and see work underway to construct new schools and upgrade old ones.

When you are making a $2.5 billion investment to upgrade more than 1200 schools and build 56 new ones across the state, supporting almost 5000 construction jobs for Victorians, there is a lot to see.

Across my electorate of Monbulk there have been 21 school maintenance and upgrade projects. These include major upgrades at Monbulk College and Upwey High School.

When I turned the sod for construction at Monbulk College last year, I met with staff, students and parents who were just so excited

about the new and exciting learning opportunities that the new facilities would provide.

And the upgrade at Upwey High School has been done in consultation with local community groups including the Dandenong Ranges Music Council and the local basketball clubs

ensuring that these upgrades benefit not just the school but the local community as well.

Mooroolbark East Primary School and Mater Christi College have also received funding for upgrades.

But unfortunately, it hasn’t always been like this in Monbulk.

In fact, between 2010-'14 not a single dollar was received by schools in Monbulk for capital upgrades.

Four years is a long time for these schools to go without investment, so when I talk about having to play catch-up, this is what I mean.

I note recent attempts by various MPs to rewrite history and wash their hands of responsibility of their time in government, but the

facts are the facts and zero projects versus 21 is a significant difference.

Just ask these schools.

But it’s not just in the seat of Monbulk where our government’s investment is making a difference.

In the neighbouring seat of Gembrook, our government has delivered on our election commitment to upgrade existing schools like Emerald Secondary College.

In addition to this funding the Victorian School Building Authority is currently working with the school to deliver maintenance improvements.

And we’ve also built a brand-new primary school in Officer, which opened this year.

Trees brighten ugly end of town In relation to the article ‘Thunderbox needs a spark’ (‘Mail’, 16 January, 2018), I can only hope that if the toilet block next to the new Emerald Hub is to be retained, the adjacent mature trees will also be preserved.

They are the only joy in an increasingly ugly ‘east end’ of town, especially since the pines at Worrell Reserve were felled.

As for ‘extensive community consultation’, the first I heard of it was six weeks ago, when a sales rep visited the store I manage in Mulgrave.

She had dropped into a similar business in Emerald, nearby the Hub site, and relayed to me that the staff were extremely unimpressed to have only just been informed of the plans.

They were equally concerned about the fate of the trees.

‘Brekky’ before honours

By Peter Douglas The Cockatoo community enjoyed a rousing Australia Day breakfast at the beautiful Alma Treloar Reserve on Friday 26 January.

With loyal community members heading out in droves to enjoy an early breakfast, a huge audience gathered to enjoy the official ceremonies.

Among those representing the community were members of the local Scouts, Emerald SES and the Cockatoo CFA, with the latter forced into a mid-ceremony exit to attend an emergency call-out.

Community leaders also joined representatives from Cardinia Shire Council, Gembrook MP Brad Battin and La Trobe MP Jason Wood, who led the Affirmation.

During his speech, Mr Battin expressed his passion for the day and his commitment to see Australia Day remain on 26 January.

“Australia Day is important for everyone to celebrate, whether you’re a First Australian or one of our newest Australians; whether you were born here or not,” Mr Battin said.

“However, we’re seeing a bit of a tradition at the moment where some people are saying we shouldn’t be able to celebrate Australia Day the way we want. “(But) everyone, including the community here at Cockatoo, deserves that place to celebrate; we deserve to celebrate our volunteers ... those who’ve been and built our country, whether it was the First Australians or the new Australians who have come through.”

Meanwhile, the first to gain widespread praise was Cockatoo Young Citizen of the Year winner, Blake Howden.

The young winner said volunteering for your community was a great way to give back.

“G’day ... thanks for having me,” Blake said.

“I started off with the Cockatoo Conservation Group, which has taught me a lot about

plants and the environment, and how you can give back to your community.

“We’re always looking for volunteers and I recommend you give it a go.”

Among Blake’s volunteer work also includes with the local fire-wise garden and the Cockatoo RSL. Interestingly, Blake’s mother, Rachelle Mechielsen, was the next on stage, accepting her Cockatoo Citizen of the Year award.

Ms Mechielsen said the Cockatoo community had quickly become her home.

“I arrived here, ironically, on Australia Day six years ago, with a young family and a dodgy marriage,” she said.

The Senior Citizen of the Year honour went to Marilyn ‘Maz’ Golden, who has been involved with upkeep of the community hall, the op shop and offering child-care services over many years.

The RSL Christmas Lunch, and it’s mantra that no-one should be alone at Christmas, was awarded the Community Event of the Year honour.

Steve Utting and Carol Thompson accepted the award on behalf of the RSL. Musicians Ayden Gadsden and Meaghan Nelson provided entertainment, while ’Pattsy’ revved up the crowd during a rendition of ’Waltzing Matilda’.

“But what I found was a community full of opportunity and welcoming smiles. So my kids and I jumped straight in.”

Among Rachelle’s involvements have included with the local tennis club, the Country Market, the Roads Action Group, and with the Cockatoo Primary School and the Emerald Secondary College.

She even started a local fire-guard group.

“Cockatoo feels like a great big family where, sure, people grumble and bicker ... but, in truth, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

That’s probably true for many of you here today,” she said.

“Cockatoo is now where my heart calls home.”

Their creativity on display

By Derek Schlennstedt The creativity of VCE students from across the Yarra Ranges will be on display in two monthlong exhibitions, through Council's annual VCE Showcase.

The 11th annual showcase will feature an exhibition at Mooroolbark Community Centre's Red Earth Gallery, opening at 6pm on Thursday, 15 February, and another at Burrinja Gallery opening the following night.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said the exhibition was a chance to celebrate the work of talented young artists from local schools, who created pieces in painting, drawing, photography and mixed media.

"Every year, we see incredible artworks made by homegrown artists on display at the VCE Showcase, and this year will be no different," Cr Cox said.

"The works on display are as vibrant and diverse as the people who make up our community, and there are plenty of different works to see.

"I encourage everyone to come along to this wonderful event, and drop in on the opening night to see the artists with their works."

Artist Tahlia Hayes' work, To Be Human, explores the rituals that govern people's day to day lives through photographs.

"Whether we realise it or not, we as humans rule our lives with rituals and habits," Ms Hayes said.

"They are the processes that bring us comfort and familiarity and a sense of order to our lives. Although fundamental, they can remain private and can be looked over.

"With this work, I aim to show the viewer the beauty of ritual and, as a result, the beauty of being human."

Picnic and performance for summer music show

Dan Sultan will wow crowds at Burrinja Theatre in April as part of his statewide tour.

By Derek Schlennstedt Cardinia Shire Council's annual Summer Music Series is fast approaching, with free familyfriendly concerts held at Emerald Lake Park every Sunday throughout February.

The concerts feature local and visiting performers and are held in the park's bandstand.

Also part of the Summer Music Series for 2018, the Cardinia Cultural Centre will host a bonus show featuring the talented Whiskey Dram and Cardinia Civic Concert Band from 4-6pm on Sunday 4 February at the Cardinia Cultural Centre amphitheatre.

Though, School holidays will have ended there is still another month of summer ahead, with lots of fun to be had at the weekly Positive Music drum circle and four great performances at Emerald Lake Park.

Sultan of swing is the thing

To prove that the hard working Melbourne musician recently announced that he will be hitting the road for a run of intimate theatre shows throughout regional and metro centre and be stopping in at the Burrinja theatre on Friday 13 April.

Though, leaving his incredible band at home, the Solo Tour will see the Melbourne musician strip things back to basics - just Dan, his piano and guitar and resonant voice.

Red Moon Session will see the Melbourne musician teaming up with friends Camp Cope, A.B. Original, Dave Le'aupepe from Gang Of Youths and Meg Mac to rework a selection of songs from Killer.

Sultan said of the project, "I can't wait to hear the reworked versions of my songs from some of my favourite artists."

Greatest Showman? Not The Greatest Showman Starring Hugh Jackman, Zack Efron, Michelle Williams and Rebecca Ferguson In The Greatest Showman, American showman P.T. Barnum (played by Hugh Jackman, a gifted showman himself) rises from rags to riches through charisma and a keen instinct for show-business, only for hubris to bring down his entertainment empire.

Unfortunately, the film's plot is severely unfocused, and Barnum's development unravels in the climax.

For a film that espouses the self-respect and sense of community that Barnum supposedly gave the 'freaks' in his circus show, it feels pretty disingenuous how very few of these performers have any meaningful characterisation - and the film glosses over the real Barnum's frequent gross exploitation of his performers.

Barnum's eventual reconciliation with his performers, after side-lining them in favour of

opera singer Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson), feels unearned, as there is little sense of Barnum learning from his mistakes.

While impressively staged, most of the musical numbers feel rather repetitious or even contrived. Jenny's soaring ballad about all the fame in the world being 'never enough', which reflects Barnum's greediness to his own momentary shock, rings hollow when you realise that Barnum would have had to approve the song before her performance.

The pacing is uneven, rushing through large tracts of Barnum's life and offering easy solutions for his financing and romance woes, and the ending flip-flops between Barnum reviving the circus for the sake of his performers and letting it go to raise his family.

Despite its lavish presentation and perfectly-cast star, The Greatest Showman is a regrettable dud.

Sherriff pulls rank against Magpies The Basin's Jake Sherriff ran rampant against Belgrave in a restrictive bowling display against the Magpies.

Sherriff claimed 7/29 from 13.3 overs to help keep Belgrave to 109 at Belgrave Reserve, not allowing the home side to impact the scoreboard with the willow.

Not to be outdone with skilful bowling performances, the Magpies hit back to have The Basin 5/62 at stumps.

Steve Devenish was as hot as the Melbourne weather with the willow against Knox Gardens.

Devenish scored a classy 144, assisted too

by David Devenish with 47, to help the Sharks post 9/289.

For the Falcons, Adam Wild proved pick of the bowlers with 3/67.

Upwey have already claimed first innings points against Mountain Gate.

Cameron Wheeler was at his best against his former club, taking 6/22 to hold the Gators to 61.

The Tigers surpassed the total with ease,

Upwey-Tecoma footballers will soon have an improved football ground and their neighbours will have peace-of-mind.

In November, 2017, Yarra Ranges Council endorsed the 2018 Capital Development Program in, providing more than $100,000 in grants to not-for-profit groups to improve sport and recreation facilities and support active participation.

As part of that grant Upwey Tecoma Football Netball Club (UTFNC) received $20,575 in funding for netting for behind their goalposts, which are being relocated to maximise the oval’s playing area.

Club President, Mal McKern, said that the nets would ensure that footballs going through the goal posts would be easier to retrieve and would not leave the reserve.

“By moving the goal posts about 10 or 11 metres anti-clockwise, it gives us another two metres on the length of the ground and creates a better position for viewing and for the new lights,” Mr McKern said.

“But by moving the goal posts we needed the netting, because balls are going towards peoples’ homes. We couldn’t move them without looking after the neighbours.

“We’re a not-for-profit, so everything we do,

we pay for ourselves - we have a lot of fundraising activities during the year, but the grant makes it exceptional.

“We can do things that benefit everybody for the future.”

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, congratulated the club on its successful Capital Development Grant application.

“Our sport and recreation groups are made up of volunteers, who work tirelessly to give young people and adults the opportunity to get active and connect with their community,” he said.

“The work being done by the Upwey Tecoma Football Netball Club will help in transforming the Upwey Recreation Reserve to a community hub and a sporting area that will be the envy of teams around the state.

“I’m proud that Council is able to support our sporting and not-for-profit groups through these programs and look forward to seeing the finished project.”

The Upwey Tecoma Community Recreation and Sports Hub (UTCRASH) Pavilion is also currently being constructed at the Recreation Reserve, as part of Council Capital Expenditure Program and is expected to be opened on Saturday 24 March.

Monbulk bowls results

So close for some

By Jamie Strudley A big week of athletics was highlighted by the performances of club athletes at the Little Athletics Victoria Multi Event Championships, held at Casey Fields over the weekend.

Day 1 saw Zoe Clarke (U9 Girls), Steph Van Bemmel (U10 Girls), Tiara Willis (U11 Girls), Wilber Davidson-Tuck (U11 Boys), Tayleb Willis and Camden Hewitson (U15 Boys) competing.

Tayleb and Camden have their seven events spread over two days, while the remainder completed their five events on the one day.

Standout performance came from Zoe Clarke, missing third place by just two points, eventually finishing fourth.

Tiara Willis was also close to a medal finishing fifth in her grade.

Steph finished 22nd out of 75 U10 Girls, while Wilbur was 50th out of 67 U11 Boys who finished.

After day 1 Tayleb was sitting in sixth place only a few points ahead of Camden in 11th.

Thursday night was a latest round of Little Athletics with a great turnout of excited athletes.

Some very strong performances were recorded, partly due to the competition provided by parents who were invited to compete with their children.

The night ended with an open All Comers Mile race which attracted 29 athletes.

First male was Harry Norman in 4.58.5, while the leading woman was Laura Yorke in 6.50.2.

Some mixed results for Monbulk bowlers.

Tuesday pennant saw Monbulk 1 which is in third place take on fourth placed Mooroolbark at home.

Monbulk were able to take control on two of the three rinks and won by 31 shots, 75 to 44.

Andrew Bell's rink won by 25 shots, 32 to 7 and Eric Markham's rink won 32 to 12, by 20 shots.

Peter Koomen's rink trailed for most of the day losing by 14 shots, 11 to 15.

Monbulk 2 played at Croydon and found the going tough losing on all rinks to go down by 23 shots, 42 to 65.

Graeme Goller went down 13 to 24 and Dick Coppin lost by 11 shots 12 to 23. Eric Furby had a close battle going down by one shot 17 to 18.

Monbulk 3 travelled to Ferntree Gully and came away with a very good victory by 13 shots, 66 to 53.

Lorraine McLaren's rink were the stars of the day, winning by 16 shots 29 to 13.

Peter Francis won by 7 shots 21 to 14 and Ray Pike's rink went down by 10 shots 16 to 16.

Saturday pennant had Monbulk 1 travelling to Heathmont with some confidence they could have a victory.

However, Heathmont had other ideas and won convincingly by 35 shots, 102 to 67.

Andrew Bell's rink was the shining light winning by 6 shots, 19 to 13.

However, Richard Cookson's and Eric Markham's rinks lost by 14 shots each and Brian Smith went down by 13 shots.

Calais added to history The National Museum of Australia has acquired one of the last vehicles to roll off the Holden production line before the Elizabeth factory closed on 20 October last year, marking the end of Australian-made car manufacturing.

The National Museum is committed to collecting objects for the nation, which represent key elements for Australian society and culture.

Holden unambiguously falls into this category as an iconic brand, which for decades has symbolised freedom and independence for millions of Australians.

The Holden Calais, which on Wednesday 24 January joined the museum’s collection, is a four-door sedan manufactured at the General Motors Holden factory in Elizabeth, South Australia, on 13 October, 2017.

The vehicle joins the museum’s historic Holden collection, which includes the 1946 Holden Prototype Car No.1, built by American and Australian engineers in Detroit, which became the definitive model for millions of Holden cars.

Essington Lewis’s 1948 48-215 model Holden (also known as the FX) is believed to be the first Holden sold commercially.

It was delivered to industrialist Lewis (18811961) on the eve of 24 February, 1949, a day before the first Holdens were released for sale to the general public.

National Museum director, Dr Mathew Trinca, said although it was sad to see the end of local car production, the museum was proud to include the vehicle as part of the story of car manufacturing in Australia.

“This modern vehicle, which has an Australian-made 3.6l V6 engine and the latest technology, is the perfect bookend to the Museum’s Holden collection, which spans over 70 years,” he said.

“Built for Australian conditions, the robust and economical Holden family sedans captured the public imagination when they first rolled off the assembly line in 1948. Many saw this as evidence of national maturity, proof that Australia had escaped its pastoral beginnings and embraced the modern industrial age,” Dr Trinca said.

By 1958, Holden sales accounted for over 40 per cent of total car sales in this country and one million had been sold by 1960.

Holden chairman and managing director, Mark Bernhard, said the Calais donated o the museum “celebrates the Holden manufactur-

ing journey and the special place Commodore holds in the heart of many Australians.

“The pride, passion and quality of workmanship delivered by our people at Elizabeth has meant our last Australian-build cars, including this Calais, with its engine proudly made by Holden at Fisherman’s Bend, and with hundreds of other components drawn from Australian automotive supplies, are the best and most technologically advanced vehicles ever made by Holden in Australia,” Mr Bernhard said.

“There is no finer automobile to sit alongside the 1948 Holden prototype in the museum’s collection. We’re proud to make this donation to celebrate our manufacturing heritage.”
