The Fire Patrol Unit and Mt Evelyn CFA were called to a burn-off on Sunday 7 January despite the fire danger period having already commenced.

Following a day of total fire ban on Saturday 6 January, Yarra Ranges Police have made it clear that they will not tolerate any illegal burn-offs over the fire danger period.

In a post on Yarra Ranges Eyewatch, Yarra Ranges Police said that they will take a 'zero tolerance approach' to residents burning off during the prohibited fire danger period and confirmed that four people had recently been charged on summons after being caught burning-off during prohibited times.

The post stated that a 64-year-old Narre Warren East man, a 58-year-old Sassafras man and a 26-year-old Mt Evelyn man were interviewed in relation to illegal burn-offs.

A 27-year-old Millgrove man had also been interviewed about another illegal fire.

"Please be aware that burning off is prohibited throughout the Shire of Yarra Ranges and police have a zero-tolerance approach to those who flout the ban," the post read.

Sergeant Bridgette De Chirico at Yarra Ranges Police said that any illegal burn-offs would be taken very seriously and that people caught burning off could face severe consequences.

"We are having a problem with people burning-off during The Declared Fire Danger Period," Sgt De Chirico said.

"People need to be aware that if they are burning outside of the conditions allowed under the CFA act, in the fire danger period or on a day of total fire ban they may be prosecuted in relation to offences regarding that."

"If that fire escapes they may be liable for very heavy offences."

During the fire danger period Police also have on duty a Fire Patrol Unit which patrols areas of high-risk and is able to respond quickly to illegal burn-offs.

The unit also monitors and liaises with local CFA stations and Leading Senior Constable Peter Hamilton at Mt Evelyn Police said they would continue to monitor and patrol areas for potential arsonists.

"The Fire Patrol Unit is a proactive initiative in the Yarra Ranges Shire where two units get around in a marked four-wheel-drive through bush tracks and walking tracks making it aware that the police are out there looking for potential arsonists." Lead Snr Const Hamilton said.

Hub’s ready to roll

By Bonny Burrows and Peter Douglas After numerous hold-ups during the planning phase, the Emerald Hills Hub looks set to begin construction early this year.

At Cardinia Shire Council’s December meeting, council announced the appointment of MelbCon to construct the multi-million dollar hub, which signals a huge step forward for the highly anticipated project.

Upon completion, the Hub aims to connect a range of community services.

These include health and counselling services, a radio station, an arts space and local tourism; all aiming to support Emerald and surrounding communities.

While acknowledging the lengthy delay, Ranges Ward councillor, Leticia Wilmot, said many stakeholders needed to be consulted due to the magnitude of the project.

“This process has been quite a long one and a very detailed one, dating back 12 years,” Cr Wilmot said.

Cr Jeff Springfield, who is also an Emerald resident, said, as a community member, he was looking forward to using the building.

Among the community groups expected to be included in the Hub are the Men’s Shed (about 50 members) and the Emerald U3A (about 330 members).

The facility will be located in a renovated Emerald library and Mechanics Hall precinct and a new building.

The adjacent Worrell Reserve is expected to be a construction site “for a couple of years” while works are carried out.

Fellow Ranges Ward councillor, Deputy Mayor Brett Owen, said about 20 community groups have been meeting regularly in relation to this project.

“This is one of the biggest engagement processes the council has undertaken,” Cr Owen said.

Operation Roadwise Operation Road wise came to a conclusion on January 7, 2018 with results showing the majority of drivers within the Yarra Ranges were doing the right thing.

Over the holiday break Yarra Ranges Police were out in force as part of a 24-day blitz to take dangerous, impaired and irresponsible drivers off our roads.

During the blitz, over 13,000 drivers were breath tested.

Of those 13,000 driver 44 were identified as being alcohol or drug impaired and another 600 driver received various offences.

Yarra Ranges Highway patrol Sergeant Dave Mcilfatrick said it was still disappointing to see that many driving under the influence.

"It was good to see the majority of drivers doing the right thing but disappointing to see so many impaired drivers putting others at risk on our roads," Sgt Mcilfatrick said.

“Emerald and the hills community deserve this building. It will be a quality building that has access for all, which is really important.”

Cr Owen acknowledged there had been some community concern about the way the project was handled, and the design that was chosen, but he was “confident this was the best way forward”.

Initially, the community had been given four design scenarios to vote upon, with the endorsement of Design Scenario 4 announced

in September 2015.

Scenario 4 supported a ground floor hall in the new facility, as well as the demolition of the old hall.

The architect had developed the design scenarios after extensive consultation with the Hub Advisory Committee.

From the responses received, Scenario 4 gained the most support (98 votes), with Scenario 1 (75 votes), Scenario 3 (32 votes) and Scenario 2 (30 votes) all gaining some backing.

‘Tide turns towards democracy’

By Peter Douglas In the wake of the planning process surrounding the Hills Hub development, Emerald resident Julie Buxton has announced the establishment of a local group that promotes “good governance”.

TiDE (Trust in Democratic Engagement) aims to advocate at local level, through working with individuals, community groups and local council.

The group’s mantra is that when local government features transparency and accountability, as well as access to quality information, the result is improved outcomes for the community.

Ms Buxton said TiDE’s first point of call was an evaluation of the consultation process around the Hills Hubs development.

Ms Buxton said the group had question marks over the process.

“Financial arrangements around the ownership, management and cost of use of the new building were not publicly disclosed or debated.”

Ms Buxton acknowledged there was consultation, which centred on an advisory committee comprising “mainly councillors, groups associated with the Hall precinct and the current tenants”.

“While their work and feedback would have been an important part of the process, it largely excluded the wider community,” she said.

Ms Buxton also questioned the results of an online survey, which was used to select the final design.

“It is questionable whether 249 people out of a possible 7000 in Emerald and surrounds is a reasonable representation of community sentiment about this project,” she said.

“I find it hard to believe that only 249 people in Emerald are interested in this issue.”

Ms Buxton, though, did acknowledge the difficulties surrounding such a major project.

“It’s a complex development and these things take time to work out,” she said.

“But whenever publicly acquired funds are used, there needs to be absolute transparency around the use of those funds.”

Two Ferntree Gully men, both 18, were rescued from Patterson River at Carrum beach on Saturday 6 January, as temperatures soared beyond 40 degrees.

Carrum Surf Life Saving Club said the men were extremely lucky, with the rescue coming after scheduled patrols were due to finish at 6pm.

Despite pleas to stay away from Patterson River on that day, the two men were swept into the Patterson River channel.

A lifesaver with a tube secured them until the inflatable rescue boat was able to rescue them and return them to shore.

Carrum SLSC Club Captain, Catherin Paulsen, said the rescues came despite several warnings from lifesavers.

"We've arranged for big warning signs to be placed here, we speak with beachgoers," she said.

"However, people continue to swim here.

Even, on Saturday, after they've seen others swept away in a current and rescued, they swim in the same place."

Tradie trailer theft Belgrave Police are seeking information regarding the theft of a trailer and tools from Janesleigh Rd, Upper Ferntree Gully between the 12 and 13 January.

The trailer was displaying plate X51406 at the time of the theft and is black in colour.

Police car rammed A 55-year-old man has been charged following an incident in Kilsyth overnight on 7 January.

Police attended Regina Street following complaints of an alleged fight about 10pm.

It is alleged he rammed a police car and drove at members before confronting police with a machete.

The man was sprayed with OC before being arrested.

The police members were physically uninjured in the alleged assault.

with Roger Boness, President at MT Evelyn RSL

What is something people don’t know about you?

I’ve been involved in water sports most of my life. When I was at high-school I used to teach children to swim on the holidays at The Middle Brighton baths - I used race in Port Phillip Bay too. I still try and keep active.

What has been your most memorable moment?

The most memorable moments are the collective moments, the moments when you participate in the community sporting groups, in community forum in community initiatives.

I suppose most memorable are my memories of growing. I can remember walking to school when I was 4-years-old. We had to make our own toys; we had those skills to be able to make wooden billy karts. We’ve come through an era of great development and great technology improvement - it been amazing to see the changes.

What would your final meal be?

I’ve thought about this quite a bit, when i was conscripted into the Vietnam War we often had discussions in the field of what meal we’d like if we returned home, mine was always lamb loin chops, mash potato, peas and gravy.

my children are well cratered and cared for.

That’s something I’d like to ensure as there’s too much struggle in the world at the moment, too much bickering and too many controversial discussions going on.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on a couple of things, first getting the garden back in shape. It’s been neglected and has become overgrown as last year i spent most of my time travelling, so nature is trying to reclaim my plot. The other thing I must do is to write my book on conscription I started it and stopped it and started and stopped it again and this time when I start I must conclude it.

What is your favourite book?

I’m a fiction man; any good story suits though I used to like the Famous Five and Secret Seven books by Enid Blyton. When I was younger we had to go to the bed at a certain time and turn the lights off and the only way I could continue to read those books is to go to the toilet and turn the light on.

What event, past, present or future would you like to witness?

The thing that’s on my horizon at the moment is that within the next fortnight and for the first time ever I’m going to become a grandfather.

That’s something we’ve been planning for, and something that we’re really proud of and something that’s going to change our lives, so I’m looking forward to that.

What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

I’d invite St Kilda AFL captain Darryl Baldock, my friend James MacDonald; he can talk about world history at any level, Neville Clarke, he was my immediate army boss- he’s an academic and has received notable awards in that regard - we had enthralling talks in the jungle and we still keep in contact, David Attenborough, Julia Gillard, and of course my friend Anthony McAleer.

What is your favourite television show?

What is your overwhelming passion?

My passion is to make sure that when I depart

Walk for Sunshine

By Kath Gannaway Liane and Tony Drummond’s return to the Yarra Valley over Christmas is part of a lifechanging tragedy, and a life-affirming 10,000 walk for change.

Liane’s only son David took his own life a year ago. It was the catalyst for their ‘Walk for Sunshine’ aimed at raising awareness around suicide which she said was the leading cause of death in males aged 16 to 45, and the second in males 46 to 54.

The couple had lived in Emerald and Yarra Junction and worked respectively in community health and community education in the Yarra Valley before moving to Chillingham on the New South Wales/Queensland border a few years ago.

David, whose nickname was ‘Sunshine’ was just 28 and Liane said he had struggled with mental health issues and a mental health system which failed him.

“I thought this is not okay, I don’t want another Sunshine to have to struggle with the system as it is when they are so vulnerable and so unwell,” Liane said.

Working in general health care she had assumed that there would be similar access to care available, but found the gap is huge.

So far they have walked 2000 kilometres, taking it in turns to walk and drive each day, updating the shocking and growing suicide statistics on a chalkboard on the side of their Walk for Sunshine van.

Their conversations along the way are raising awareness of the incidence of suicide, particularly male suicide which accounts for 75 per cent of those who take their own lives, but it is also about gathering the stories of others to take to Canberra.

“Currently mental health accounts for 14 per cent of the burden of care, but it only gets seven per cent of the funding.

“We’ve heard so many tragic stories of people being discharged, over and over again and unless there is a movement advocating for change, I can’t see it changing.”

The Drummonds are encouraging people to share their stories not only on the road as they pass through their communities, but on their Walk for Sunshine facebook page.

They plan to arrive in Canberra in Mental Health Week in October and, hopefully, meet with the Prime Minister and others who have the power to effect change.

“It’s not just my story Mr Prime Minister, it’s a collective story, and it’s not okay, is the mes-

sage we want to deliver,” Liane said.

Each story however is tragic, each story is devastating - and it’s not just the numbers that make it a national tragedy.

“I don’t want anyone else like my David to go through what he went through,” she says.

“He should have got better care, and, I don’t want any other mother to go through what I am going through.

“There are just no words ... you are completely overwhelmed and shattered.”

Seven young CFA members in the Dandenong Ranges were last year rewarded for completion of a defensive driving course.

Thanks to the Anthony and Travis Hall Memorial Driver Education Fund, the young members had the chance to participate in the Level One Defensive Driving Course and last year's fund marked its 19th anniversary.

In that time Upwey CFA has helped assist the fund to deliver over 100 successful drivers courses to new drivers volunteering with CFA stations around the hills area.

To acknowledge their achievement, awards were presented to Krissy Dundas (Montrose CFA), Holly Bast (Macclesfielsd Brigade), Rory Ratten (Cockatoo CFA) Lachlan Diprose (Sassafrass-Ferny Creek CFA), Brad Carlton (Belgrave Heights and South Belgrave CFA), Sarah Anderson (Menzies Creek CFA) and Jay Stortenbecker (Upwey CFA).

The memorial fund perpetuates the memory of Anthony and Travis Hall, who were aged 15 and 13 respectively when they were killed in a road accident in Cockatoo in January 1995.

Both boys were enthusiastic members of the Upwey Junior Fire Brigade, with Anthony being the Junior Captain at the time of the accident. The fund is designed to remember Anthony and Travis in a way that is beneficial to the community.

Since its inception the fund has received tremendous support from local fire brigades and local residents and Upwey CFA member Peter Marke said the Upwey CFA station has also extended their reach to other brigades.

"This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Travis Hall fund and in that time it has delivered over 100 successful drivers courses with the help of Murcott's Driving Assistance," Mr Marke said.

Thunder box needs a spark To Cardinia Shire Council and Cr Brett Owen (Ranges Ward).

Firstly, let me congratulate the council and the Hills Hub Committee on a great job in getting the project to the current stage where it will be commencing the building of the Community Hub in Emerald early in 2018.

I understand that there has been extensive community consultation, which is great.

However, I have only just learned that the extremely disgraceful toilet block next to the Hub will be retained.

I am at pains to understand why this eyesore would not be demolished and incorporated into the new building?

It is ugly, in a poor state of repair, dirty and an embarrassment in what is otherwise Emerald’s vibrant, bustling community that attracts thousands of tourists each year.

This toilet block, along with the one on the Puffing Billy Park, is always dirty and does not meet the community standards expected of today’s public.

It detracts from all of the other good work that has been done to promote our gorgeous town.

Could you please give me some feedback on the reasons for keeping this dilapidated

toilet block and for any plans for improving or replacing the one on Puffing Billy Park.

Little town with big heart December was a big month for Monbulk - the Community Carols event and the collection outside Woolworths raised $1100 for the annual Act for Peace Collection.

This money goes towards education for girls in some of the poorest countries in the world.

Just a few coins in the collecting tin from many will make a difference.

December also showed us the new street decorations.

A group has worked very hard all year to raise money to buy decorations.

Each year, the street looks more like Christmas.

The addition of the hanging baskets was a big winner and it was great that the whole street was decorated.

Council call

By Derek Schlennstedt Fix the roads, improve community consultation and processes surrounding building plans and permits: that's the message from 500 residents to the Yarra Ranges Council.

Last year the State Government of Victoria surveyed 500 residents in a 20 minute phone conversation asking about service area, customer contact, and key areas of improvement.

The results show only a marginal improvement of just 2 points on last year's satisfaction survey.

Though, the total score of 60 also shows that Yarra Ranges' community consultation and engagement satisfaction was on par with other interface councils - the average score being 59 and 60 respectively.

These interface councils include a group of ten municipalities which form a ring around Metropolitan Melbourne and are among the most rapidly growing communities in Victoria.

Despite being within the average for the state, residents key concerns included community consultation, the quality of roads, and processes around building plans and permits.

According to the survey, the topic of planning and building permits received a performance index score of 46 - the lowest score for Yarra Ranges Council services - and significantly lower than the State-wide average of 51.

For planning and building permits services 26% of residents rated Council performance as 'very poor' or 'poor'. On the topic of unsealed roads Yarra Ranges Council again performed undesirably though the current score was a two point improvement on last years and was significantly higher than the Interface group and State-wide averages of 45 and 44.

Yarra Ranges Council CEO, Glenn Patterson said he was pleased to see Yarra Ranges Council was above average in many aspects and said that Council would look to address the indicat-

ed areas in need of attention.

"While we're performing above the average in areas such as unsealed roads, our residents have told us that several areas still need attention," he said.

"In our Planning Department, we'll be continuing to roll out ePlanning and fast track services to improve customer experiences and satisfaction in this area, and service reviews across the organisation are helping us to innovate and bring our work in line with community expectations."

At the other end of the spectrum; Waste Management, Emergency and Disaster Management and Art centres and Libraries were the top three performing areas for Yarra Ranges Council all scoring above 65. Mr Patterson said the survey gave Council a good opportunity to regularly review their performance.

"We provide more than 120 services to more than 150,000 residents over 2500 square kilometres and community feedback is important for us to measure how we're tracking," Mr Patterson said.

"These satisfaction surveys, along with our Customer Expectation and Customer Experience Surveys, help us to figure out where to make investments to improve the services we provide to residents and ratepayers."

The survey also addressed what the council should pay particular attention to over the next 12 months according to where the importance of a service exceeded the rated performance by more than 20 points.

These priorities included: Unsealed roads with a margin of 27 points between rated importance and performance, Making community decisions with margin of 26 points, Planning and building permits with a margin of 24 point, Slashing and weed control with a margin of 22 points, Local streets and footpaths with a margin of 21 points and finally Consultation and engagement (21 points).

Mass dumping under the guise of the Hard Waste collection has caused problems in the past.

Hard waste prize incentive While residents are springing into action across Yarra Ranges to get their hard waste out for collection, some lucky residents will be springing into a free action adventure at the end of the collection for following the rules!

In an effort to encourage residents to check what can and can't be put out, the Council is offering the opportunity to win incentive prizes including a balloon flight, a family Segway tour and a white water rafting trip for households that tick all the boxes.

In 2017, Council issued 2100 Notices of Non-Compliance for homes that placed inappropriate or excessive items out for the annual Hard Waste, Bundled Branches and Metals Collection.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said that Council officers reported a higher incidence of dumped rubbish across the municipality during the collection period, which runs from mid-January until the end of March.

"Currently, there is little incentive for people to check what is okay to put for collection, which leads to frustration when some items aren't collected," Cr Cox said.

"We've seen that this can lead to people dumping rubbish illegally, which costs ratepayers about $250,000 each year.

All homes will go into the draw, including those not placing items out for collection, unless issued with a Notice of Non-Compliance for their hard waste.

Items such as fuel tanks, gas bottles, tyres and springs, oil, aerosols and paint are often placed out for collection in hard waste, despite not being eligible for pick-up.

Acids, fuels, cleaners and other chemicals can be disposed of through the Detox your home mobile collections organised by Sustainability Victoria. Phone 1300 363 744.

‘Yanking’ on chain

By Peter Douglas Two of the finest international chainsaw carvers to compete at this year’s annual Australian Chainsaw Carving Championships have an advantage over the competition.

Their secret weapon?

They’re staying with their new Aussie mate and reigning local champion, Rob Bast.

So Mike Ayers and Jeff Samudosky needn’t look too far for advice, after flying out from the US recently to stay with Bast at his Wandin North property, before the SkyHigh Mount Dandenong event.

Crowds will travel from nationwide to see the displays of carving prowess from Tuesday 16 January until Sunday 21 January.

During their stay, Mike said he would also use the opportunity to see parts of the country, which includes a trip to Tasmania; while, Jeff a keen surfer - is heading down to catch some waves at Torquay.

Bast said the trio had become close friends after meeting on the international carving circuit.

“They wouldn’t be here if they weren’t elite at what they do ... they do some great Midwestern stuff; they do great bears and wolves.

They’re up there with the best,” he said.

“Chainsaw carving is such a huge sport in the US. There wouldn’t be too many fairs where there’s not a chainsaw carving competition happening.”

In addition to the Australian competitors, this year there will be three US competitors in total, with one coming from Japan and another from Canada.

Competitors carve for five days.

Emerald Library visitors punch above their weight division when it comes to being charitable, donating in excess of $2300 of gifts and non-perishable items for the 2017 Forgiving Tree Appeal.

The total proved an invaluable contribution towards the overall total of $20,000 of items raised from Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) during the appeal, which went towards helping local charity partners.

Beginning in the lead-up to Christmas last year, the initiative invited residents to contribute items and have any library fines waived, in acknowledgment of their generosity.

The initiative proved to be enormously well supported.

CCL Chief Executive Officer, Chris Buckingham, said the generosity of library members was inspiring and library staff were delighted to be able to pay it forward by wiping the slate clean for members willing to give back to their community.

From 1 January, people who are late returning goods will also have the opportunity to make a donation to the library.

The group is presenting a free show at Burrinja for children which is described as an interactive music and dance performance taking place in the beautiful and serene Burrinja sensory gardens.

Made up of contemporary dancer Dani-Ela

Kayler, musician Toni Main and director Gene Holland, the performance explores the everyday world through movement, storytelling and sound.

"We create our works purely through improvisation and play; we bring the themes and ideas into the space and work on the floor together as a team to generate the material," Director Toni Main said.

"It's a really exciting turn-around for this particular show, we really immerse ourselves in this space and then we invite the kids that come along to the show to see the work,

which will be in the theatre and then to also experience the gardens we designed the work around."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a beautiful and consistently enthralling film marred by flimsy character development.

The Rebel Fleet, led by General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) is in deep trouble, pursued relentlessly by the First Order Fleet and unable to escape to light-speed. Meanwhile, the gifted Rey (Daisy Ridley) approaches Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), a self-exiled Jedi Master, urging him to help the Rebellion and teach her in the ways of the Force.

The Last Jedi does an exceptional job of maintaining taut suspense through the entire run-time. The film immediately establishes a clear threat and sets up logical goals for the characters to pursue against this threat. Despite frequently cutting to calmer scenarios, such as a whimsical escapade in an alien casino and Rey's sombre introspection on Luke's island, the film constantly reminds us of the dire situation the Rebellion is caught within.

Unfortunately, while the characters are engaging and the performances are universally excellent, the development is very weak.

Disillusionment and setting aside the past to make yourself anew are major themes of The Last Jedi, but for all its portentous build-up, the characters don't really change. Even after shocking revelations come into play and their respective sides are upended, Rey and antagonist Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) remain static; they still want to save and destroy the Rebellion (respectively), just as before.

The Last Jedi is a riveting and intensely suspenseful film, but has a disappointing lack of character development.

Athletes back into action

By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics welcomed back all its Little Athletics athletes after a well-earned Christmas break.

It was obvious Father Christmas looked after everyone with lots of smiles, energy and eagerness.

The club had a few key officials away but it was great to see some parents step up to cover various roles.

These roles are fun, including starting, timing and recording.

If you are interested in learning how to do any of these roles, especially starting, talk to Michael or Graeme.

The morning was a quick program with all events finished by 10.30am.

There were many exceptional performances and races.

The seniors competed in Round 11 of AV Shield split between Lakeside Stadium on Fri-

day night and Nunawading on Saturday afternoon.

Both programs were affected by stormy weather.

The club had many athletes competing, further enhancing the chances of teams making the final on 10 February.

The start of the championship season is fast approaching with LAV State Multi Event Championships, EMR Region Championships (for Under 9s to Under 15s) and Athletics Vic-

toria Open and Junior Championships.

The club encourages all athletes to consider entering in championships; they are fun, challenging and certainly not as scary as some may believe.

Monbulk in a convincing win at home Round 11 of Tuesday pennant saw Monbulk 1 take on Ferntree Gully at home and they had a convincing win by 27 shots 68 to 41.

Andrew Bell’s rink won 19 to 8, while a terrific team effort saw Eric Markham’s rink win by 18 shots 32 to 14.

Peter Koomen’s rink went down on the last end by two shots.

Monbulk 2 had a closely fought game at Boronia, winning by five shots.

Eric Furby won by nine shots, Dick Coppin by three shots 18 to 15 with Graeme Goller’s rink going down 11 to 18 by seven shots.

Monbulk 3 found the going tough at Noble Park, losing 47 shots to 64.

Peter Francis had a good day with his rink winning by three shots 19 to 16; Ray Pike went down by two shots in a nail-biter and Lorraine McLaren’s rink lost by 18 shots 7 to 25.

Saturday pennant resumed on the weekend with Monbulk 1 finding the going tough at Bayswater.

At the break, only one shot separated both sides but with the rain coming down the home side was able to draw away and win comfortably 67 shots to 105.

Andrew Bell’s rink went down by seven shots, Eric Markham’s rink lost by 15 shots and Brian Smith went down by 24 shots.

Richard Cookson’s rink provided the highlight of the day winning by eight shots, 23 to 15.

Monbulk 2 consolidated their position at the top of the ladder with a convincing win over Mount Waverley 83 shots to 24.

Lorraine McLaren won 32 to 8, Peter Francis 27 to 9 and Eric Furby 24 to 7.

Monbulk 3 faced another finals aspirant in Blackburn and they went down on all rinks by 38 shots, 76 to 38.

Doug Elliot lost by 16 shots 7 to 23.

Ray Pike lost by 17 shots and Alan Brooke lost by five shots.

Americans crack cricket

By Derek Schlennstedt Belgrave Cricket Club welcomed some international visitors on 11 January when around 30 students from Elon University in North Carolina visited to play and learn about the great game of cricket.

The students were visiting Australia for three weeks, as part of a program by Allawah Travel and Training, which specialises in fullyguided travel and adventure activities for University students.

Andrew Peacock, Director of Allawah Travel and Training said though the student had played some backyard cricket while on their three-week trip he wanted to introduce them to a sport they knew very little about.

“We chose cricket rather than AFL due to the time of the year but also because even with AFL they see it a little bit like Gridiron, whereas cricket is completely alien to them ... teaching someone to bowl is pretty hard,” he said.

On the day the students were introduced to the sport with a short history of the club and where the sport came from, before being given the opportunity to practice in the nets for a T-20 match.

It wasn’t long before many of the students had the hang of it and despite some early cricket balls being lost into the bush behind the nets, the students quickly took to the game.

Elon University Student Julia enjoyed the experience though admitted that bowling over-arm felt extremely unnatural.

“It’s weird, it’s really weird ... it’s a very abnormal feeling and is the opposite to what you learn in baseball so it’s like retraining your brain to throw overarm,” she said.

For the Batters getting the hang of the grip angle and understanding where the ball was going to bounce was ‘harder than it looked’.
