Heat on region’s firebugs A name-and-shame campaign is targeting suspected local firebugs to stamp out “reckless and deliberate fire behaviour”.

The Crime Stoppers initiative follows a spate of suspicious blazes including a 70-hectare grassfire at Mannerim this week and a Christmas Eve arson attack on the Torquay home of former Big Brother contestant Heath Tournier.

The three-month campaign would publicise names and images of suspected fire offenders before targeting other criminals in later stages, said Crime Stoppers Victoria general manager Cathy Rhodes.

“Over the next three months CSV will name a number of wanted people and seek to identify a number of alleged offenders police want to speak to in relation to crime committed in Geelong and the surrounding area,” Ms Rhodes said.

“The community will be urged to review the images we release and report what they know confidentially to Crime Stoppers in a bid to help solve crime in the area.

Ms Rhodes urged public support of the campaign, which launched in Geelong with the support of police and local fire authorities.

Geared up for vintage days

By Luke Voogt The smell of coal and steam will entice lovers of vintage engines and turbines to Geelong Classic Truck and Machinery Show this weekend.

Organiser Chris Quirke was looking forward to a big crowd at Geelong Showgrounds as he geared up this week for the annual celebration of old-school contraptions. “The show’s renowned for having the biggest and best display of restored working vintage machinery and tractors in Australia,� he said. “It attracts people from all over the country and even quite a few enthusiasts from overseas.�

The Newcomb truck driver’s obsession with all things mechanical began as a teen “leaning over the fence at the Geelong Show.� “I used to come and spend four days there,�

the 30-year-old said. “You see all the wheels spinning and things that do some of the most amazing tasks, and you just become hooked.�

This year’s machinery show would feature 15 fully-operational steam engines, 12 permanently-installed oil motors and an interactive section for youngsters, Chris said. “The kids can come and have a build - it’s all hands on. They can make all sorts weird and wonderful things.�

A vintage tractor pull would thrill crowds for a fifth year in a row, Chris said. “Some 70 tractors take part in this not-tobe-missed event demonstrating the pulling power and torque of the machines that worked the land over the last 100 years.�

Chris was also on the lookout for new engines for the show. “If you have a special piece of machinery in your shed we’d love to hear from you.�

Former victim Pippa takes on the bullies

Geelong councillors should defy Andrews Government "gagging" and call for the removal of their state-appointed monitors, a former mayor has urged.

Stretch Kontelj was “appalled” to learn of the ratepayer-funded monitors when he returned to Geelong over Christmas.

“If I was on council there would be hell to pay,” he wrote to the Indy before flying back to work in the UK. “This is intolerable and a sign of a Kremlinstyle State Government intent on instilling fear and gagging the City of Greater Geelong.”

In September 2017 then Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins announced that monitors Jude Munro and Peter Dorling would "guide” Geelong's new democratically elected council.

Dr Kontelj questioned what the “so-called” monitors were monitoring given that none of the returned members of the council sacked in 2016 were “found to have committed any wrongdoing”.

“The mayor and the democratically elected councillors must, on behalf of the citizens of greater Geelong, stand up to the State Government,” he said.

Dr Kontelj said councillors were also frustrated with a new media policy initiated before their return.

“What is the point of elected councillors if they can’t speak to the media on issues of concern and importance of constitutes.”

Ms Hutchins’ successor, Marlene Kairouz, said the monitors would remain until 2020.

“Monitors will continue to help restore the services and good governance the people of Geelong deserve,” she said.

Coalition MPs and former mayor Daryn Lyons have also taken aim at the appointments.

A recent Archibald Prize exhibition in Geelong was worth $6 million to the city’s economy, according to City Hall.

More than 58,000 people visited the exhibition at Geelong Gallery, with nearby local hospitality venues acknowledging a consequent increase in business, City Hall said.

Drysdale’s Pippa Swanwick has taken her anti-bullying crusade online following years of campaigning.

“I just want people to be able to stand up for their rights and be safe online,” the 29-yearold said. “It's a safe site where you can leave comments up and the people can relate to the stories.”

Pippa, who has Down syndrome, has been a passionate supporter of the cause since high school in Melbourne, where she experienced bullying firsthand.

“I was discriminated against because of my disability,” she said.

“They spread rumours about me - I felt pretty sick and left out.”

Pippa's friends and her partner, Paul Matley, who she met at her 18th birthday party, were among her biggest supporters, she said.

“He supports me in my anti-bullying and so does my best friend.”

Proud mother Pat Trowbridge described Pippa as “a very strong-willed young woman” “She knows where she is and where she wants to go,” Ms Trowbridge said.

“People always say to me, ‘She’s so independent, you’ve done such a great job’.

“I didn’t really have a choice. From the time she was born she just wanted to be out there with the kids and do the same things.”

Pippa's family enrolled her in a specialneeds school after she became a victim of “classic teenage-girl exclusion“ in years seven and eight, Ms Trowbridge said.

Friends will become enemies when Geelong's Ivana Kabab, named for her favourite delicacy, squares off against the nation's sassiest drag queens this month.

Ivana will show no mercy as she whips out the stilettos in pursuit of the Miss Gay Australia International crystal crown - even against old friends.

"It gets bitchy - everyone is after the crown because it's so sparkly," said her Point Lonsdale alter ego Nicholas Gerardi.

The 29-year-old hairdresser described Ivana as "a classic beauty with a touch of trashiness".

"She just likes to be a crowd-pleaser. She's Switzerland neutral - she doesn't get involved in other people's drama."

Nick started dressing in drag in 2007 after finishing high school and performs regularly at

a Melbourne pub.

"You go from your normal self to this totally different character in the space of a few hours," he said.

Nick debuted in the pageant in 2016 and will hit the stage again at St Kilda Town Hall on 27 January to entertain 500 spectators.

"I do hair and drag for a living, so there's more pressure for me to bring my A hair, face and game to the stage," he said.

He will promote Hair With Heart, which raises funds for needy children, and GASP, which supports young LGBTQI people, during the pageant.

Nick said knowing more about GASP "would have made things a hell of a lot easier" when he was bullied at high school.

"High school (can be) horrible for some people - especially those identifying as gay.

The TAC has warned against raising the speed limit on the Princes Highway “lightly“ despite a recent public survey which overwhelmingly supported the measure.

TAC road safety director Samantha Cockfield said any proposal to increase speed limits must not increase the risk of death or serious injury to drivers.

“We understand why some road users favour increasing speed limits, however, as decades of research has shown us, such measures should not be taken lightly.”

State Roads Minister Luke Donnellan instructed VicRoads to undertake a review investigating a 110km/h speed limit on the Princes Freeway between Werribee and Winchelsea.

The review followed a survey in which 80 per cent of 1900 respondents voted to increase the limit.

Ms Cockfield said increasing the limit was a matter of weighing the safety risks against the benefits.

“Increasing the speed limit to 110km/h on this stretch of the Princes Freeway would save roughly five minutes, not accounting for traffic conditions.”

Ms Cockfield said comparing the Princes Freeway between Werribee and Winchelsea to rural freeways was “problematic”.

Roads like the Hume Highway, which has a 110km/h limit, normally carried less traffic and had less lanes.

“Much of the Princes Freeway between Werribee and Winchelsea operates more like a metropolitan freeway in that it has three lanes and much higher traffic volumes.”

“This adds to the complexity of lane-changing manoeuvres and creates a far more hazardous environment for motorists.

“The right speed limit for one road is not always the right speed limit for another.”

Mr Katos commissioned the survey and has been a vocal supporter of increasing the speed limit on Princes Freeway.

“What a win,” the member for South Barwon wrote on social media on Thursday.

“VicRoads to conduct a speed limit review thanks to my campaign and to your responses to my survey.”

Locals took to Mr Katos’ page to voice their thoughts, with the majority supporting the proposal.

“Every other major road in Australia is 110km/h so this one, being the newest of them, should definitely be 110km/h,” David Allwood said.

Others voiced their opposition to the proposal saying it would increase accidents and their severity.

“For the relative time saved it is not worth the increased accident risk - people can’t avoid running into each other at 100km/h,” Kim Wallace said.

“It will only be worse at 110km/h when they are still trying to text, do make up or even shave.“VicRoads’ Emma Miller-Olsen said the authority reviewed speed limits on a case by case basis and solely based on traffic volumes.

“To ensure the continued safety of motorists and to address community concerns, a speed limit review on these roads will be undertaken once all the new flexible safety barriers have been installed.“

DOUBLE TAKE Australia and the USA have a long history of fighting battles on beaches, but the Wieland Shield is a friendly rivalry.

Now in its 25th year, the event pits the best surf life savers from Victoria and California against each other.

One of the more interesting stories to come from the event was that of two-time Olympian Azad Albazari, who was born in Saudi Arabia, competed for Syria at the Olympics and now lives in the US where he is a Los Angeles County Lifeguard.

“In California, our beaches are long with many lookout towers along them. Here, there are so many bays and headlands - it’s so pretty," Azad wondered.

"Thanks for the unreal hospitality from one surf lifesaving club to the next - definitely great times.“ Certainly Azad is a humble gentleman, which, to many, might put him at odds with his country’s president.

A donation drive with a difference spared GAWS’ 70-odd resident doggos from a ruff time on Saturday as the mercury reached a scorching 42 degrees.

Each pup paddled playfully in their own private wading pool thanks to the efforts of dog-loving locals.

“They were splashing around having a great time,” said the centre’s Jody Dickson.

“They really did need all the cooling off. It gets quite warm in the pens.”

The animal welfare centre collected 60 pools while Leopold Bunnings customers chose sausages over hotdogs, chipping in the last 10.

GAWS dog Max couldn’t get enough of his new pool on Wednesday.

“He needs a bit of training but he’s a lot of fun,” Jody said.

He certainly entertained the Indy’s photographer, who struggled keep the perky pooch in one place long enough to take a snap.

“He’s a bit of goofball too. He’s very playful with the other dogs - he loves them,” Jody added.

The happy hound is searching for a new human to love too, but Double Take reckons he might prefer an owner with a backyard pool.

Crime Stoppers said “recklessly causing a bushfire” included disobeying fire restrictions, leaving campfires unattended, burning off without a permit, or using hot tools or machinery that emitted flames or sparks on total fire ban days Penalties for causing a bushfire include up to 15 years imprisonment or fines over $36,000.

The maximum penalty for arson resulting in death is 25 years’ imprisonment.

The campaign coincided with expectations of an “above-average fire season”, said the CFA’s local assistant chief officer, Rohan Luke.

The initiative and its timing underlined the “need for extreme caution” this summer, he said.

“Last weekend’s extreme weather conditions further highlight the need for vigilance, care and responsible behaviour.”

The campaign also reflected the CFA’s “zero tolerance” of fire threats, Mr Luke said.

“A fire started at any time of the year (and) which damages someone else’s property is a crime.”

The campaign, in conjunction with Geelong Police, began with a focus on fire but would widen next month include other crimes, said Acting Superintendent Geoff Colsell.

“Later focuses will include outstanding offenders wanted on arrest warrants and unsolved crimes including robbery and assault,” he said.

“Please support and follow this campaign by reporting anything you know confidentially to Crime Stoppers.

“This collaborative campaign forms part of Geelong Police’s overall efforts to ensure our community is safe and feels safe at all times.”

Tayla immersed herself in music after high school and became her "own person" again, writing several original tracks.

She has sung and played guitar since age 8, drawing inspiration from her dad's band.

"I used to follow him to the recording studio and I'd practice while they were practicing."

She has also raised money for the Maude Rural Fire Brigade, Relay for Life and the homeless in Geelong.

Tayla Meddings' musical battle against mental illness has earned her a nomination for a statewide award.

The Bell Post Hill teen will feature in the Victorian Young Achiever Awards after helping to raise more than $6000 from charity concerts and trivia nights.

"Music can definitely change people's lives for good," the 19-year-old told the Indy this week.

"I suffer from mental health issues as well, so it was really amazing to use my talents and passion to help other people."

Tayla helped found the Geelong Music Community Collective last year following the suicide of Audioslave front man Chris Cornell.

"I grew up listening to his music and I sing a few of his songs," she said."It was a real shock to hear that someone who shares the same talent and same mindset would do something like that.

"My father's band and I decided to get a few bands together and do a tribute."

The collective's 50 musicians have since performed tributes following the deaths of Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington, Cornell's close friend, and David Bowie.

Tayla raised money for Geelong's IMPACT mental health centre after growing up with anxiety and depression.

"I've had it since I was about 13 and I really struggled with it growing up - especially through school," she said.

"I grew up without my mum so a lot of my songs show that."

Tayla struggled to fit in at school - so she changed the way she acted, dressed and looked.

"When I did fit in I changed who I was and that was quite scary," she said.

Dumpers reach new lows

By Luke Voogt The "worst dumping ever" at the Salvo's North Geelong store has prompted local traders to call for increased security measures.

Peter Anderson, who owns a nearby car wash, was furious after litterers again dumped mounds of household items and clothing at the store on Monday.

"This is an absolute disgrace," he said. "It's affecting the businesses out here. I've had stuff blown onto my property."

Mr Anderson accused the Salvos of "deliberately shifting" the problem to ratepayers by building a fence around the around the property.

He blamed the fence for recent dumping in the street, which he described as the worst he had seen at the site.

Illegal dumping has long plagued the store and in 2016 was costing the Salvos about $125,000 a year to clean up.

But the fence forced council to take over much of the clean-up, Mr Anderson said. "(The Salvos are) quite happy to put thousands of dollars of cost onto the Geelong ratepayers."

He urged the charity to install lighting, surveillance cameras and signage or hire a security guard.

"I spent the money on my video surveillance and equipment like every other business in the area. Why don't they?"

Mr Anderson said a meeting with Geelong council representatives and store management a few weeks before Christmas failed to resolve the problem. "(The Salvos are) happy to do anything so long as it's not at their cost."

Nearby store manager Jason Arnel described one instance of dumping last November as the worst he had seen.

"They need to do something because it's

Mr Arnel agreed the fence at the store had worsened the dumping but said the Salvo's had a "right to do to protect their property".

Geelong council regularly removed "truckloads" of rubbish from the site, Mr Arnel said.

But the Salvo's Aife O'Loughlin said staff and volunteers often arrived early to clean the mess and make sure the store could open on time.

"It would nice if they didn't have to," she said.

"We can't just leave the goods there. We

have an obligation to make sure it's clean and safe for the people who are shopping."

The store was worst-affected by illegal dumping of the Salvos' outlets in Geelong, most likely due to it being large and in an industrial area, she said.

"The vast majority of that's people who are trying to donate and think they are doing a good thing."

But dirt, grime and weather damage rendered most of the goods unsellable, costing the Salvos thousands instead of supporting its community programs, she said.

Eastern Beach offers the cleanest swimming this summer, according a new report on water quality at bayside beaches.

The iconic venue topped the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) report on forecast water quality for beaches around Port Phillip and Corio Bay. The top-placing gave Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula a clean sweep of the top four, with Portarlington, Queenscliff’s Santa Casa and Drysdale’s The Dell the next three on the list.

St Leonards finished seventh, leaving local beaches filling half the top 10.

The Mornington Peninsula’s Safety Beach, Sorrento, Dromana, Portsea and Rosebud rounded out the top 10.

Beaches closer to Melbourne failed to rate a mention.

The EPA’s Andrea Hinwood said waterquality “performance” was based on forecasting data provided to the public through EPA’s Beach Report service, updated twice daily during summer.

Bay ‘pest scare’ for coast The Indy reported in December that the discovery of undaria in southern Port Phillip Bay raised fears the kelp could be about to spread offshore but authorities were confident it remained inside the heads.

The marine pest outgrows native seaweed, taking over territory and damaging the habitat of marine animals and other indigenous plants.

Parks Victoria said the latest inspections at Apollo Bay gave “hope that control efforts, education and the natural health of the marine environment are containing the marine pest”.

The department initially feared that the kelp had invaded a nearby marine sanctuary.

“We’re pleased to report that diving at Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary was like taking a tour through a botanic garden. The diversity of native seaweeds was stunning and there was no Japanese kelp visible,” said Parks Victoria’s Jonathon Stevenson.

He urged divers and anglers to report any potential sightings of undaria.

The department was also working with boating groups to raise awareness about the role of vessels in spreading the kelp.

“Pests like Japanese kelp can compete with native algae for space and can lead to a loss of suitable habitat for a range of marine species,” Mr Stevenson said.

Authorities hope they have contained a noxious marine pest to Apollo Bay’s harbour after battling it at one of the region’s premier dive sites late last year.

Parks Victoria investigators reported “no visible spread” of the Japanese kelp, undaria, after receiving unconfirmed reports of outbreaks at two sites outside the harbour.

Authorities have been battling to contain the pest at Apollo Bay since 2009, with Port Phillip Bay the only other outbreak site in Victoria.

Last year divers launched eight missions to clear the weed from Pope’s Eye, an iconic recreational dive site off Queenscliff.

New council, same issues The former Geelong council administrators’ track record of non-achievement and entrenched practice of throwing ratepayer’s money at consultants apparently will continue under the new regime.

Ratepayers should note that any desire or action to reduce council’s huge debt and to improve the transparency of transactions will also be lacking in the current team of newbies and oldies. I would be glad to be proven wrong, however.

I predict more of the same: state Labor watchdog control, debt escalation, decisionaversion syndrome, a passion for employing consultants, a lack of accountability, and councillors falling back to doing their own thing when in damage control.

An example of decision-aversion syndrome is the Beach House. I doubt that any private business would let that venue sit vacant for 21 months.

Examples of doing their own thing include the administrators choosing not to file their required final report and hiring a futurist who banked a large ratepayer-funded cheque.

How did Geelong benefit positively from the actions of the highly-salaried, part-time administrators? Media talkfests, PR shoots, junkets, meetings with consultants and egostroking by certain local journalists aside,

Also, a federal investment in a low-cost housing program could provide jobs in construction while helping working couples and single parents into their own longer-term homes.

Locally, rather than a continuance of New South Wales-centric focus and expenditure, a Turnbull Government investment at and international accreditation of Avalon Airport would provide a catalyst for an open-ended regional tourism, hospitality and fresh foods export jobs bonanza.

Akmal in-tent on comedy

By Luke Voogt IN TENTS COMEDY: Akmal Saleh will perform at Wonderland Spiegeltent in Barwon Heads this month.

One of Australia's best-known comedians, Akmal Saleh, confesses his first stand-up routine was a fraud.

"I'm ashamed to admit this," he told the Indy ahead of his upcoming Geelong show on 21 January.

As a teen Akmal was obsessed with deadpan comedian Steven Wright - so he decided to "borrow" 10 of the American's jokes for his onstage debut.

"I killed it - it was so brilliantly written I couldn't go wrong. People were shaking my hand and buying me drinks after."

A few months later, following some stern words from the venue operators, he debuted his own material.

"That was much harder, of course," he said.

Akmal cut his teeth in the "rough" Sydney scene, performing for boisterous crowds and buck's and hen's nights in pubs.

"People would get really drunk, sit down and watch just to heckle the comedians."

The Egyptian-born comedian performed as 'Peter' in the early 90s, so "people would think I was white".

"There must have been 50 Peters when I started doing comedy. Arabs weren't as popular as they are today."

Now Akmal is known Australia-wide by his first name.

He likened his "gradual" fame to the 'boiling frog experiment', where a frog is boiled so gradually that it (reportedly) fails to perceive its danger and dies.

"I just want to make it clear I haven't tried this experiment before," he added.

Despite his fame the occasional punter still mistook Akmal for someone else. One woman thought he was a former neighbour.

"She asked if I'd seen (another neighbour) and I said 'yeah he's a meth dealer now'. I

made it all up.

"Another girl thought I was in her Salsa class. I must have a forgettable face."

Akmal became religious at age 14 when his father died, but soon after discovered the darker side of the church.

"I saw so much hypocrisy and corruption. It was all about money."

Disillusioned with religion, he filled the void with comedic legends like Eddie Murphy, George Carlyle, Paul Hogan, Rowan Atkinson and John Cleese.

"It became an addiction," he said. "I was never good at school but I could remember Monty Python by heart."

Early in his career Akmal had a lucky break befriending and touring with iconic comedian Jimeoin.

Performing in theatres was like "flying first class" compared to the Sydney pub scene which was more like "where the luggage was kept", he said.

"You've got a captive audience, no one is selling drinks and they really respect you."

The 53-year-old said comedy and a lack of children had kept him young.

"You're allowed to be silly and childish for longer," he said.

"I know people in their 30s who look older than me because they've got children. I think 'sucked in you should have thought about that before you had kids'."

He recently quit radio, after almost a decade as a presenter, to get back on the road.

"I was earning really good money but I left that because it was killing my stand up career," he said.

Akmal will perform in Wonderland Spiegeltent, Barwon Heads, at 9.15pm on 21 January.

"The tent is a really beautiful venue - it's an experience just being in there no matter who's on," he said.

Bard botany Magic, revenge and romance play out in the summer evening when the Shakespeare’s The Tempest comes to the Geelong Botanic Gardens this weekend.

The play tells of the tale quarreling survivors of a terrible shipwreck who wash up on a lonely shore.

The survivors come across the remote island’s enchanter Prospero (Bruce Widdop), who raises his staff and summons the spirits of the sky, creating a mighty tempest.

The embittered Prospero, the Duke of Milan, plots to restore his beautiful daughter Miranda (Sorcha Breen) to her rightful place using illusion and manipulation.

Ozact’s cast bring the legendary playwright’s story to life among the ornate fountains, statues, trees, ferny glades and lawns of the gardens.

The group has performed at the gardens for a decade, which Widdop described as a superb match for Shakespeare’s plays.

“We are excited to bring The Tempest back as our production for this season’s tour of Shakespeare in the Great Outdoors,” he said.

Widdop directs The Tempest as well as playing the lead character.

He joins the cast of Andy Delves, Matthew Young, Michael Davidson, Kyle McDonald, William Lark, Luke Ingham, Eleanor Ruth, Kira Burnett and Lisa Widdop.

“This production is full of suspense, high drama and broad comedy, embellished with exquisite costumes, and beautiful music,” he said.

The play runs at the Geelong Botanical Gardens from 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

For Sarah Grace teaching acting is more than just preparing Geelong’s next TV stars - it’s about inspiring self-confidence and creativity.

The long-time film and TV actress loves seeing children come out of their shells.

“Some kids come in and at first they’re really shy,” she says.

“After couple of months we’re like wow!

They have so much to offer just being their creative and quirky selves.”

After 11 years teaching six days a week, Sarah’s students still surprise her and her team.

“They are always amazing with what they come up with,” she says.

Grace Acting Studios specialises in giving kids the skills and confidence to star onscreen.

“It can be anything from green screens to acting out a drama or comedy,” Sarah says.

With 20 years working in theatre, commercials and Australian dramas like Blue Heelers and Neighbours, Sarah knows how to help youngsters take their acting further.

Improvisation sessions and acting challenges prepare the studio’s 430 students for any role they take on.

“We try to simulate what to expect so when they go up for an audition they’re ready to go,” Sarah said.

“It’s really rewarding seeing them go into all areas of the industry.”

Students get to act on a professional TV set, operate video cameras, complete voice overs for cartoons and commercials and explore green screen special effects.

Sarah is a qualified primary school teacher and her acting courses complement the Victorian Curriculum.

In a year in which Australian SUV sales have overtaken those of traditional passenger cars for the first time the launch of the Kia Stinger was welcome news for keen drivers.

Because, as sensible and practical as SUVs are, with a few exceptions they don’t provide much driving enjoyment.

It’s no coincidence that the arrival of the Stinger has coincided with the demise of Ford Falcon and the switch from local production to importation of Holden Commodore and Toyota Camry. Quite clearly Kia Australia has seen an opportunity to bring in its highest performance vehicle.

Stinger combines excellent performance with cruising comfort in a body that attracted admiring looks wherever we went during our fortnight behind the wheel.

Back in 2006 Kia pulled off a major coup by recruiting the renowned German designer Peter Schreyer from Audi as its chief design officer.

One of his earliest moves was the creation of a new corporate grille known as the Tiger Nose that in various guises has been a feature of every Kia model over the past decade.

Behind the grille there’s a long, low bonnet with air vents on either side reminiscent of the now-departed Holden Monaro, together with side vents.

The entry level Stinger S gets 18-inch alloy wheels, the higher spec Si, GT-Line and GT models get 19-inch. All models come with chrome coated quad exhaust pipes.

Stinger is a rear-wheel drive five-door hatch with a sleek profile that could easily be mistaken as a coupe. It comes with the choice of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol or 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol and three equipment levels, tagged S, Si and GT-Line in the four and GT in the six. A few Holden and Ford punters did ask if there would ever be a V8. Sadly … no.

We recently reviewed the 2.0-litre GT-Line and this week’s test is on the V6 GT. Despite Stinger’s fastback styling headroom in both front and rear is good, though a bit of ducking and weaving is needed for taller occupants to get inside. Rear legroom is good by courtesy of the car’s 2.9-metre wheelbase.

Stinger GT gets Sports Nappa leather appointed seats with a GT logo. All models have powered driver’s seats enhanced in the GT with lumbar support, thigh extender and position memory.

The boot is wide and flat but without much height. Capacity is listed at 406 litres with the rear seatbacks in place and up to 1114 with them folded.

Kia Stinger come with the choice of two turbocharged petrol engines, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol that produces 182 kW of power, with maximum torque of 353 Nm running all the way from 1400 to 4000rpm. The 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 has peak power of 272 kW, and a big 510 Nm torque from 1300 to 4500rpm.

Both engines drive the rear wheels through Kia’s in-house eight-speed multi-mode automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted shift paddles.

All-wheel-drive is available in some overseas markets, as is a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, however at this stage there are no plans for either to come to Australia. Nor is there a manual gearbox on the horizon.

Standard safety features across the complete Stinger range include seven airbags; ABS brakes; stability and traction control; hill start assist; rear parking sensors; rear view camera; active bonnet lift system; LED daytime running lights; automatic headlights; two IsoFix child seat anchorage points; and impact sensing auto door unlocking.

Added features on the mid-spec Stinger Si are autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assist, as well as front parking sensors and driver attention alert.

The Stinger GT uses an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen mounted at the top of the centre fascia.

Rather than relying entirely on touch commands, with the distraction that these can often entail, a number of the most commonly used features are accessed through old-style push buttons situated below the screen.

As befits its spot at the top of the Stinger range the GT gets a 15-speaker premium Harmon/Kardon audio system powered by an external amplifier. Speed dependent volume control is a neat feature. Bluetooth pairing is simple and quick allowing access to both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The satellite navigation system comes with 10 years of updates for both SUNA traffic information and MapCare.

There are USB and Auxiliary inputs recessed at the bottom of the front console directly alongside a storage space that’s designed for smartphones. The GT and GT-Line models also provide for wireless phone charging.

Entry and exit is surprisingly easy given the Stinger’s low profile. We needed to set the driver’s seat to its lowest setting but once ensconced the seat is comfortable and supportive thanks to the GT’s adjustable bolsters.

The view out of the rear mirror is restricted by Stinger’s long, low angled rear window but that’s the norm in cars of its ilk.

The difference in performance between the 2.0-litre four and the 3.3-litre V6 was surprisingly small which is as much about how good the smaller engine in the lighter (1693 kg) car is, rather than any deficiency in the larger (1780 kg) car.

In normal urban conditions or in motorway cruising the difference between the engines is barely noticeable but the extra grunt of the V6 does make a difference in winding and hilly terrain.

As with all Kia models local engineers have been heavily involved in the tuning of Stinger’s suspensions to suit both Australian conditions and driver preferences.

Finals push begins after wobbly start LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club enters the second half of the Victorian Premier Cricket season very well placed to make a genuine push for finals, an achievement that looked impossible after the Cats lost the first three games of the season back in October.

The Cats sit in seventh spot on the ladder following a nail biting 6-run win over the Monash Tigers before the break, a crucial win in setting up their run home. With 12 rounds of a 17-round season already completed, the sides destiny is in their own hands.

They will be looking to extend their winning run tomorrow when they begin a two-dayer against Camberwell Magpies to be played over the next two Saturdays. Camberwell have been one of the stronger sides in recent years, but are languishing in fourteenth place currently, meaning the cats can kill the hopes of one of their main dangers for a finals spot with a solid performance here.

Geelong Cricket Association also resumes with a round of one-day games, and with just five games remaining in division one, a cliffhanger end of to the season ensues.

North Geelong showed why they are the team to beat, comfortably disposing of East Belmont last round, the Magpies sitting undefeated on 42 points.

However, the next four sides on the ladder all

Grovedale have worked their way up to second spot, and they take on Lara who are fifth, but only percentage separates them.

The Tigers appear to have a more star studded line up, but the form of Andy Hughes has been the catalyst for Lara to become a genuine threat, as his team mates feed off his good form and find some of their own.

Lara are always hard to beat at home, and will take some beating, but Grovedale haven’t won the last two premierships for nothing, and deserve to start narrow favourites.

In division two, while Bell Park have stolen all the headlines for the past year and a half, Bell Post Hill have quietly gone about their business this season, and have managed to work their way up to first position at the break.

It is the fight for the fourth finals spot that look most intriguing though, as Torquay and Highton both sit 6 points outside with 24 apiece.

Interestingly, they play each other tomorrow in a game that could almost be a considered an early elimination final, as the loser will struggle to get back in touch.

Torquay have really troubled some quality teams so far, but Highton appear to be the most likely to make a run into March, and should win here.

And in division three, Alexander Thomson look like the only team that might be able to push on of the top four out, but if they can’t lift a level or two and defeat Geelong West tomorrow, this years finalists might already be set.

The Vikings showed they are capable of anything last season, making a sensational late run to come from the clouds and nab a finals berth at the very last minute. But they look thinner this campaign, and a dramatic form reversal would be needed for history to repeat itself.

Woods’ niece to play open The niece of 14-time men’s major champion Tiger Woods will compete in Barwon Heads' Oates Vic Open next month.

Cheyenne Woods’ would play her first Vic Open for a share of $650,000 in prizemoney, organisers announced.

They said the open's "unique appeal" and a co-sanctioning agreement between the Ladies European Tour and the ALPG Tour would deliver "one of the strongest women’s fields seen on Australian shores in 2018".

“I’ve heard quite a bit about the Oates Vic Open from girls I know that have played and I’ve heard so many good things,” said Woods.

“Last year I tuned into the live stream of the playoff between Sandra (Gal) and Mel (Reid) and I could just tell it’s a great event.

“I made sure to put it on my schedule and this year I’m so glad I’m able to play.”

The 2018 open would be the first time 27-year-old Woods had played a professional event with alternating men’s and women’s groups, she said.

“It’s something that has definitely stood out in the past when people have talked about it and how well that combination works.

“It’s a really interesting aspect to the event and I’m looking forward to playing alongside the men’s tour.”

Woods will chase her second crown on Australian soil after trumping current Australian number one Minjee Lee at a 2014 RACV Ladies Masters.

Iconic swim’s set to excite Olympians, Cats players and an array of celebrities will hit the waves with more than 5000 swimmers on Saturday in the iconic Pier to Pub. After a nail-biting finish last year Olympic champion Mack Horton returns for a third attempt to see if he can finally beat seven-time winner Sam Sheppard.

Italian Olympic 1500m gold medalist Gregorio Paltrinieri and Syrian dual Olympian Azad Al-Barazi will also swim in the star-studded event.

In the women's event World Ironwoman Champion and six-time winner Harriet Brown returns to defend her title, with Australian junior champ Lani Pallister expected to make it a tight tussle.

Competitors from 11 countries will take on the iconic swim with ages spanning 75 years.

The youngest competitor, Zac McInnes, who turns 12 on the day, will join 87-year-olds Dorothy Dickey and Keith Peter in the water.

The Lorne Pier to Pub is in its 38th year and is the largest ocean water swim in the world.

The 1.2km course starts at the Lorne Pier and finishes on the foreshore in front of the Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club house.

Volunteers of Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club organise and run the event.

The event began in the 70s, when members of the club dared each other to dive from the pier and swim through Louttit Bay to Lorne foreshore, before attending the Lorne Pub. Australian swimming legends and Olympic gold medalists Kieren Perkins and Daniel Kowalski are among the previous winners of the event.

Australian salmon at times erupted on the surface in feeding frenzies, with three-inch gulp minnows landing fish to 1.5kg when cast into the commotion.

At other times the salmon were taken by anglers trolling along Alcoa Pier.

The spoil grounds off Sands Caravan Park produced numerous pike and pinkies, again on soft plastics.

Squid were still available too over the grass beds in 3m to 4m and along the Curlewis Bank, with size three Yamashita jigs doing the trick. Whiting snapped up pippies and mussels on the same ground but out a little deeper.

Around the corner, St Leonards remained the Bellarine Peninsula’s hot spot for King George whiting. The Bourke St area had fish over 40cm on the chew.

Fishing amid decent tidal flow in the evenings with pippies or tenderised squid top baits worked well on the whiting.

Swan Bay’s channel produced some huge silver trevally along with pinkie snapper and flathead. Fishing into the night on a run-in tide with pilchard and salmon baits led to captures of gummy shark around 6kg.

The Rip fired up for kingfish, with knife jigs working well on fish to more than 8kg. Notable, southern bluefin tuna were also seen in The Rip, although only one was boated.

Bell Reef and Queenscliff Pier were very productive land based locations for squid, with larger 3.5 size jigs working best.

Kingfish were also a target offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Fish from legal size to 5kg were the most common, although larger fish were cruising around.

Fish were holding in various locations from Charlemont Reef to the back of Point Lonsdale in 40m. Trolling white skirted lures with a fresh squid strip did the trick, along with jigging and working soft plastics down deep.

Andrew Delica and I took a run out from Point Lonsdale, boating six kings around 65cm in 40m with soft plastics.

Also, gone Fishing Charters’ Chris Vasilevski guided clients onto some well-conditioned snapper and kingfish offshore from Point Lonsdale.

The Barwon River estuary gave up bream over 40cm to anglers fishing with live Bass yabbies. A few mulloway were encountered too, with casting soft plastics or fishing fresh squid baits preferred methods.

Whiting and smaller salmon were common captures toward the front of the system.

Port Fairy and Portland held school bluefin tuna in solid numbers. Trolling lures like a Samaki Pacemaker 140D or a small threeinch skirted lures accounted for fish to 30kg.

Lake Purrumbete remained the place for a trophy brown trout, either downrigging Tassie devils or fishing mudeye under a float along the east bank. Smaller rainbow trout were taken on lure around the weed banks at first or last light.

Next week should be worth fishing for kingfish offshore, either though the Barwon River or The Rip, while snapper should be still available at Clifton Springs. Freshwater fishos could head west, where Lake Purrumbete fishes well during summer.
