MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Well, the Christmas and New Year shenanigans are over and for the Southern Free Times crew - refreshed and reinvigorated - it's back to business for 2018. We'll be continuing to bring you the 'SFT' in its full-gloss format, and we expect a year of further growth for our region's only genuinely free news publication. Weather-wise it's been something of a rude awakening for the region in the new year with a few wild storms, but we're resilient types around here and we're used to dealing with extremes of the weather. And the hope is that some sustained rainfall may be coming our way. Once again in 2018 the Southern Free Times will be striving to bring readers comprehensive, grass-roots coverage of local issues and events, and we won't be backward in coming forward when it comes to asking the tough questions. We'll also continue to cover issues from the rural sector in our monthly feature 'Rural Links' - keep an eye out for the January edition in next week's paper. And once again, we look forward to the continued support of our valued advertisers - the great businesses in our region with whom we are proud to partner and which help to make this a terrific part of the world in which to live. Warwick and Stanthorpe received around a third of their average January rainfall in the first week of January as the region was hammered by storms over the Christmas and New Year period. But despite the activity in the heavens levels in some of our major water storages are still well down, with Warwick's Leslie Dam at just 13.3 per cent at the start of this week, with 14,121ML in storage compared to its full capacity of 108,250ML. At the time of printing of the Free Times this week the Southern Downs and Granite Belt were still sweltering through top temperatures in the mid to high 30s, but cooler conditions and the chance of rain was forecast for this weekend. Recent hail in the Stanthorpe area fortunately missed the region's apple orchards but strawberry and vegetable growers did sustain some damage, but are expected to bounce back fairly quickly. A young Warwick girl who was injured in a wild storm which ripped through campsites at Leslie Dam on New Year's Eve received only minor injuries, contrary to what was reported by other media outlets. Her father told the Free Times this week she had "a sore wrist and some lower back pain" after being struck by a falling gazebo during the storm but had recovered well. As at time of printing this week, so far in January Warwick had officially recorded 31.4mm of rain, as against the longterm January average of 85.3mm, while Stanthorpe had received 28.1mm, compared to a long-term average for the month of 96.9mm. Police are continuing to investigate after a five-year-old boy was accidently shot on a rural property at Cottonvale north of Stanthorpe on Tuesday afternoon of last week. The boy remains in Brisbane's Lady Cilento Children's Hospital after two rounds of surgery on a bullet wound to the face. A hospital spokeswoman today told the Free Times on Tuesday of this week that the boy had come out of intensive care and was in a stable condition, having previously been on the critical list. It is alleged that the boy was accidentally shot by an older cousin late on the afternoon of Tuesday 2 January. A Queensland Police Media statement

released last Friday stated that "preliminary inquiries indicate around 4.30pm (on Tuesday) two boys were in a shed when one of the boys accessed an unsecured firearm". "The firearm discharged and the boy sustained a serious injury to the face. "The weapon involved is registered to a Queensland firearms licence holder. "Inquiries are continuing as to how the weapon came to be unsecured and circumstances surrounding the incident. "Police urge licence holders to be mindful of their obligations under the Weapons Act to store weapons safely, ideally in a locked gun safe." It remains unclear if any weaponsrelated charges will be laid as a result of the incident. ●

Maranoa MP David Littleproud has been named Federal Agriculture and Water Minister after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced a re-shuffle of his Cabinet shortly before Christmas. Mr Littleproud has only been in federal parliament for around 17 months and his promotion follows the dumping from Cabinet of former Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester. It is understood Mr Chester's removal from Cabinet is payback from recently re-installed Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce, after Mr Chester refused to support Mr Joyce's pick for the Nationals' deputy leader, Senator Matt Canavan. Queensland Nationals MPs had also reportedly demanded a second Queenslander in Cabinet, with four Nationals MPs from Victoria in parliament and eight Nationals-aligned MPs in the Queensland LNP. Mr Joyce is also understood to have pushed strongly for greater representation for northern Australia in Cabinet and he and Mr Littleproud are understood to be close political colleagues and personal friends. Mr Littleproud recently announced he and other Queensland LNP MPs would campaign at future elections as 'Nationals', to emphasise their commitment to representing regional and rural Australia. Mr Littleproud was one of only four MPs who voted against same sex marriage earlier this month.

Deborah and Marjorie with their marriage celebrant Erica Bailey. Cover picture: Deborah and Marjorie Adams are set to say "I do" - and this time it'll be official.
FINALLY, THEIR TURN TO SHINE BY JEREMY SOLLARS Deborah and Marjorie Adams have a simple mantra for life and love - “Life’s too short not to be happy”. The pair may well be the first same sex couple in the Warwick area to tie the knot - on the first Saturday in February - since the federal government made same-sex marriage legal in December. Their impending official union will be in some contrast to a ‘commitment ceremony’ they undertook back in 2009 in Las Vegas - complete with an Elvis impersonator celebrant - but like many same-sex couples they thought the ‘real’ day might never come. Despite our local Maranoa electorate being one of only a few around the country to return a majority ‘no’ result in last
year’s same sex marriage survey, Deborah and Marjorie say they’ve had nothing but support and blessings from the local community throughout their relationship, now in its 11nth year. The Free Times caught up with the happy couple in recent days and they spoke both of their journey together and their relief at finally being able to officially say ‘I do’ including being able to enjoy the same legal status as married heterosexual couples. Being gay isn’t always easy, and for Deborah and Marjorie the road to each other’s hearts was a long and at times a bumpy one. Both of them have been down the marriage path before - with blokes - and their relationship has cost them dearly when it comes some members of their own families.
But the pair - who met online in 2007, despite living in Warwick and Allora respectively at the time - are resolute in their view that life is far too short not to find happiness with one’s true love, and they are adamant they have no regrets. “We talked over the internet for a while, and then one day I said to her, ‘Well, you can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk? I think we should meet’,” Marjorie recalls laughingly. “We met for a coffee at Warwick’s Gardens Galore, on the sixth of February, 2007,” Deborah said. “It was a Tuesday. She walked in the door and I said to myself, ‘Yep, you’re the one’. “I knew it right then and there - it was love at first sight.” “We’ve had an absolute ball,” says Marjorie.
“We’ve travelled, we bought a house together - for us, being together is like the last piece of the puzzle.” Deborah readily agrees, saying it’s important to “live how you want to live”, and she believes other gay people trapped in ‘traditional’ marriages need to likewise follow their own hearts, whatever the fallout. “Life is too short - you’ve got to be happy,” she says. “When I was married before I felt like I was living a lie - it was different for our generation, you had to keep up appearances. “But it’s not what true happiness is about. “I think this present generation and the ones to follow will be more accepting, more open-minded.” ●

PLANS FOR THE 'BIG DAY' Deborah and Marjorie - who recently officially changed both their surnames to ‘Adams’, mainly because it’s easy to spell and starts with an ‘A’ - will wed in their backyard on the big day next month at 5pm, witnessed by a small gathering of close female friends, most of whom are straight. “I think our straight friends are more excited about it than the gay ones are,” Deborah laughed. “It’s going to be casual, obviously there’s a serious side to it but we want to make it light-hearted as well. “We’ve picked out rings and outfits and we’re writing our own vows.” The wedding will be a “sunset beach theme” and the couple will enjoy a seven-day cruise to Cairns for their honeymoon, before coming home and getting back to “work and reality”. They acknowledge that in the same way as marriage is not the choice for many heterosexual couples, it’s no different for many same-sex pairings. “It’s the same for both - sometimes people don’t want to get married for all kinds of reasons, maybe they’ve been burnt before and are hesitant,” Marjorie says. “You can’t just assume that every same-sex couple is going to take that step, even now it’s legal.”
'THE OFFICIAL BIT' Doing the honours for Deborah and Marjorie will be Warwick-based Marriage Celebrant Erica Bailey, who says the couple were her first enquiry and booking since the law changed - and could well be the first same sex wedding in Warwick, if not Maranoa - and has fielded enquiries from two other local same sex couples who are "still getting themselves organised". Erica herself had a daughter, now deceased, who was gay, and she remembers when she had to explain to her 80 year old father that his granddaughter would be "bringing her girlfriend home to visit". "All he said was, 'Is she happy?', which I thought was wonderful," Erica said. "The law may have changed but there is still a lot of bigotry out there - my family and I were staying in a caravan park recently while holidaying and I got talking to a woman who was also staying there, she was a child psychologist. "She started going on about how kids from same sex relationships are 'mucked up' and all this other rubbish. "I just held up my hand and said, 'Lady, I'm not listening to this'.
Maranoa MP David Littleproud voted in line with his electorate's 56 per cent 'no' result in the same-sex marriage survey late last year, one of only four federal MPs to do so.
· Since the Australian marriage law was changed on 9 December 2017, same sex couples wishing to marry are required to lodge their Notice of Intent to Marry with a registered celebrant/religious minister no later than one month before their wedding day, ie Same Sex Marriage was legalised on 9/12/17, meaning the earliest the wedding could take place was last Tuesday 9 January, 2018. This is for all couples. · The law change has involved an alteration to the 'monitum', or the legal definition of marriage. It now reads - "Marriage according to Australian law is the union of two people to the exclusion of all others voluntarily entered into for life".

$1.2 MILLION WASTEWATER UPGRADE BY JEREMY SOLLARS Items discussed during a confidential session of a special meeting of the Southern Downs Regional Council held on the Friday before Christmas included the awarding of a contract for design and construction of a new water treatment plant for Wallangarra. Councillors at the special meeting held in Warwick on Friday 22 December voted in favour of granting a contract worth more than $1.2 million to Sydney-based firm Microfloc Pty Ltd to build the new Wallangarra treatment plant. The existing treatment plant located near Beehive Dam, the town's principal water supply, is understood to be in an extremely poor state of repair and has been so for some years, at least since the amalgamation of the former Warwick and Stanthorpe Shires in 2008. An earlier resolution passed at the December general meeting of the council on Wednesday 13 December had the contract set at $1,497,273 before GST, but the council appears to have located some $270,000 in project savings, amending the Microfloc contract at the special meeting to $1,227,273. The minutes of the meeting do not specify the nature of the savings or any reduced scope of the project, but do refer to savings "(located) through the deferral of other capital items in the existing Water and Wastewater Capital Works Program". The new treatment plant is expected to
be operational by April of this year. Wallangarra residents have told the Free Times they currently pay $552 per year for their town water supply, and council general rates on a quarter-acre block in the small border town with a population of just several hundred are around $2800 a year. Ratepayers in Wallangarra also pay $512 a year to be connected to the town's Common Effluent Disposal (CED) sewage and wastewater treatment system, which is likewise understood to be in a state of
disrepair, with household waste blockages commonplace. The Wallangarra CED was constructed in the early 1990s by the former Stanthorpe Shire Council at a cost of more than half a million dollars, as a 'Work for the Dole' project. It was installed to prevent septic sewage leaks which were a common occurrence in Wallangarra. Under the CED scheme households have a septic tank which is connected to a central network. Solids
remain in the household tank but the wastewater is transported by the network to a series of seven storage 'ponds'. A council statement released on Monday of this week said water supply and quality had "not been compromised" by a lightning strike on the existing Wallangarra water treatment plant on Boxing Day. The plant is being operated manually until repairs are completed. ●

COUNCIL HOSES DOWN POOL FEARS BY JEREMY SOLLARS
Visit us every day for the latest news and like us on Facebook
Fears are held that the council wants to close regional pools to force more visitation at WIRAC. be run by local operators, rather than larger commercial interests from outside the region, which local swimming insiders say would in any case be unlikely to take on the running of small country pools. Michael and Gail Smail who run the Stanthorpe pool this week told the Free Times they intended to put in a second tender, and Allora lessee Bill Lacy said he is "considering my options". Current Killarney pool lessee Andrew Fidge declined to comment at this time on his plans. The formal vote to reject the tenders from the existing pool lessees was taken during a confidential session of the December general meeting of the council held on Wednesday 13 December. The motion was moved by Cr Neil Meiklejohn - who also happens to be the patron of the Warwick Swimming Club, based at WIRAC - and seconded by Cr Rod Kelly,

"Southern Downs Regional Council did not receive any conforming tenders for the management of the Stanthorpe Pool, Killarney Pool, and/or Allora Pool. "All of the tenders Council received were non-conforming and lacked key information that would impact Council's decision making processes. As a result, Council officers will consult with each of the parties that submitted a non-conforming tender and feedback will be provided on what is required to submit a conforming tender. Council will then readvertise the tender in early 2018. "In early November, during the tender process, Council issued a Request for Tender (RFT) addendum, indicating to potential contractors it had decided to accept nonconforming tenders. "In its December General Meeting, Council resolved to not accept the non-conforming tenders it had received because not only were they non-conforming, but they deviated significantly from benchmark requirements outlined in the initial tender specification. "In addition, all the submissions were nonconforming, meaning there was not at least one conforming submission which could be applied as a benchmark tender. "Southern Downs Regional Council is not in a position to give preferential treatment to any one party. "Council will welcome tender submissions from current pool facility operators, as well as from all other parties interested in making a relevant submission that is in keeping with tender specifications." ●

The Southern Downs Regional Council says it has no plans to permanently close the Stanthorpe, Killarney or Allora public swimming pools, after rejecting new tenders from all three current lessees in December. Speculation is rife in local swimming circles that the council has a long-term plan to close the three pools to force more visitation to the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC). The council rejected new tenders from the existing lessees on the basis that the documents were "non-conforming" to council's operational standards, which are understood to include future equipment replacement at potentially significant cost to lessees, and onerous standards of general maintenance, all of which could make the pools commercially unviable for a small local operator. The current four-year leases run until the end of March and the council has said it will issue a fresh call for new tenders sometime in "early 2018" but is yet to specify a date. A council spokeswoman told the Free Times this week that "while no date has yet been finalised, the tender process will reopen in the early part of this year." "The swimming pools will continue to operate as per normal, closing in March for the duration of winter and reopening at the end of September," the spokeswoman said. Residents in all three towns are furious that the original tenders were rejected and are demanding that the pools continue to
with no councillor voting against it. The same motion also included a clause enabling the council to "manage and operate" the Stanthorpe Fitness Centre, formerly the Stanthorpe YMCA, for the next 12 months "or of a lesser period should an alternative contractor be identified". It also contained a clause enabling the council to likewise take over direct management and operation of the Allora, Killarney and Stanthorpe pools "should there be no conforming tenders or suitable contractors identified through the further Request for Tender". The council has wasted no time in rebranding the former Stanthorpe YMCA as the Stanthorpe Fitness Centre, having in the first week of January disabled the former Stanthorpe YMCA website and creating a new 'Stanthorpe Fitness Centre' Facebook page, which states the facility is "under new management". COUNCIL DEFENDS ITS ACTIONS A statement released by the council after the December meeting and vote said the purpose of the "swimming pool tender process" is to "deliver the best possible outcome" for ratepayers. "Council must follow Queensland's Local Government Act 2009 in relation to all aspects of procurement and have regard for the Sound Contracting Principles outlined in the Act," the statement said. "As part of the tender process, interested parties are required to respond with a conforming tender.

NEWS MISCONDUCT HEARING Charges against former Warwick Credit Union director Jim Lindsay have again been mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court. Mr Lindsay has been charged with official corruption and misconduct in relation to his role as chief executive officer of Ipswich City Council, from which he has been stood aside. He resigned as a board member of Warwick Credit Union last September. His matters were mentioned in the court on Tuesday of this week and have next been adjourned to Monday 26 February. ●
LAND OF OPPORTUNITY The Southern Downs Regional Council at its December general meeting resolved to endorse a community consultation program for its draft Economic Development Strategy. A statement said the Southern Downs Region "has the potential to increase its contribution to the Queensland Economy". "The region is well located, being two
hours from Brisbane and at the junction of two highways, with ample land that is appropriately zoned, access to water and very safe and liveable communities," the statement said. It said there are three goals in the Economic Development Strategy •Increasepopulationby10percent by2020 •Attract$300millionofinvestment by2020 •Attract1500newJobsby2020 "Those sectors targeted by the strategy include agriculture, the region's primary industry; food processing; health and aged care; transport and logistics; education and tourism," the statement said. Portfolio Councillor for Economic Development and Mayor Tracy Dobie said that the formulation of this strategy "highlights council's commitment to the economic growth and job opportunities for the entire region". "Council is striving for more investment, more jobs, more visitors and more residents," Cr Dobie said.
"Assisting existing businesses to expand and attracting new businesses to come into our area is a key function for council's Economic Development Department." The Draft Strategy will be up on the SDRC website in the coming days. Community members, businesses and organisations can are invited to send written submissions to mail@sdrc.qld. gov.au ●
HOLIDAY BLOCKAGE The Southern Downs Regional Council is blaming a blockage in its sewerage pumping system over the New Year's weekend on 'non-flushable' material being flushed down local loos. A council said staff fixed a "major blockage" of both pumps at Warwick's Market Square sewage pumping station. The pumping station, located off Billabong Street near the Condamine River, is Warwick's major sewage pumping facility and fortunately on this occasion no overflow ended up in the river. The council has reminded town
residents of the "three P's" - pee, poo and (toilet) paper", which it says are the only things which should be flushed down a toilet. According to the council the things you shouldn't flush away include •Wetwipes-theydon'tdisintegrate when flushed, even the ones labelled as 'flushable'. •Hairballsfromhairbrushes-these clump with all the other nasties in the sewer and can cause blockages. •Cottonbuds-they'remadeof plastic and can sneak through treatment filters and hold up the treatment process. •Cottonwoolballs-theystaylikewet clumps and can add to blockages. •Facialtissue-it'sdesignedtostay together when wet and absorb moisture, so takes longer to break down in the sewer system. •Dentalfloss-itgetstangledinthe equipment. •Tamponsandsanitarypads-the council says these are a big contributor to blockages in the sewer network as they're designed to absorb liquid. ●
FOCUS ON … Live Local, Shop Local
CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT IS POWERING ON The major redevelopment of Warwick's Rose City Shoppingworld has entered its final phase in 2018. Local shoppers can look forward to the completion of the $40 million Shoppingworld redevelopment by Brisbanebased owner the McConaghy Group - and the much-awaited opening of the new Coles supermarket - both scheduled for March. Most of the major work is hidden from public view behind hoardings and panels, both external and internal, including work on a new underground carpark which will provide 60 extra spaces, and a new travelator being installed near the new Coles site. The underground carpark will have an access ramp off Fitzroy Street, which recently re-opened to traffic, albeit currently under traffic control. A new mall and entrance way at the corner of Fitzroy and Palmerin streets will be another major feature of the centre's overhaul and the final touches are now being put on a new 'spire' above that area,
as passing motorists and pedestrians would have noticed of late. Inside the centre new businesses have been opening what seems like almost every other week - recent newcomers include Priceline Pharmacy, Pets Domain and Subway. Other 'new starts' to keep an eye out for in weeks to come include the new 'Bread Factory' outlet - near Rose City Fruits and Rose City Premium Meats, adjacent to what will be the new Coles - along with a new news agency and a barber shop. Strandbags is expected to open in new digs next to Sanity this month. Warwick Chamber of Commerce president Julia Keogh told the Free Times late last year the Chamber had been "pleased to see the uptake by local CBD businesses in relation to Sunday trade opportunities". "With the busy festive season upon us, increased trade, increased employment opportunities and increased choice will provide positive benefits to our region," she said. ●
Rose City Shoppingworld centre manager Jason Gard and marketing manager Louise de Lissa.

THE SPIN
A LOOK BACK AT BIG 2017 IN SPORT Here we are back in 2018 and looking forward to another exciting and interesting year of sport locally nationally and internationally. I hope that everyone had a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year break and that Santa was kind to everyone. It will come as no surprise to readers that I have spent a good chunk of the Christmas break watching the Aussies go about decimating the Poms on the cricket pitch. As good that has been the state of the Melbourne Cricket Ground wicket for thee Boxing Day Test made for a disaster and one of the most boring Tests I can recall for a long number of years. Before we get our teeth into Spin, Sport and 2018 it is time to take a little meander down memory lane and look at some of the stories that made 2017 a smorgasbord for the sporting enthusiast. 2017 YEAR IN REVIEW JANUARY Warwick hosted another successful Australia Day Cricket Carnival. Stunned Mullets made it three wins on the trot and six title in total when they took out the final of the Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival. Lachlan Gross figured prominently in Stunned Mullets win. No surprise he was named Player of the Final. The Australian Open Grand finals were a privilege to watch as two of the giants of the game went head to head. Federer and Nadal. Federer the winner in a game where you didn’t want wither player to be beaten. The Ladies final did not disappoint as the William’s sister turned on a master class. Sarina Williams confirming later in the year she was in fact pregnant with her first child when she won the tournament; making her win even more significant. The Scorchers added another BBL title to their collection. The competition broke all records and exceeded the expectations of everyone. Dave Warner edged out his captain Steve Smith as the AB Medalist for 2017 clinching back to back AB medals. Meg Lanning won her third Belinda Clark Medal. FEBRUARY Champion jockey Darren Gauci took racing by surprise announcing his retirement. The Gauch took up a position as an apprentice jockey coach alongside Matt Pumpa at Racing Victoria. Locally it was another busy season for the Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association Inc. As the restocking drew to a close fishermen and women were pleased to hear another 13000 Silver Perch fingerlings had been released. The overall number of fingerlings released into our waterways and impoundments to 230,000 for the season. Warwick shooter Dan Johnson made it three wins in succession when he won the prestigious Robin Loy memorial shoot at the Warwick Clay Target Club It was a similar result to the 2015 memorial when Dan shaded John Lee by a target to win. The Warwick Wolves kicked off their 2017 membership campaign with successful sign on days at Rose City Shopping world and the clubhouse at Queens Park. Rep cricketers from Stanthorpe and Warwick had no joy in the finals of the Mitchell Shield and Dud Davis Shield. Stanthorpe were beaten by Lockyer in the Mitchell Shield final and Toowoomba proved too smart for Warwick in the Dud Davis Shield final. 14 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

'Day One, Ball One' at the Adelaide Oval - one of the highlights of the year for the cricket faithful. On a more sombre note we said goodbye to one of the true characters of Cricket former Test Umpire Low Rowan. Rowan spoke of cricket as his life’s joy. Rowan was tough and uncompromising but he was nature’s gentleman. MARCH Maryvale finished at the top of Warwick Condamine Cricket table and Minor Premiers but in a thrilling grand final match went down to the Warwick Hotel Colts. In a game that had more twists and turns than a game of snakes and ladders both sides had their chance. Warwick Hotel Colts Cameron Peterson was named Man of the Final and received the Walsh Medal. He was also named WCA Player of the Year capping off a great day. Lachlan Gross was presented with the Max Thorley Memorial Shield as Colt of the Year. Motor racing enthusiasts were revving up for a the return of Drag racing and round One of the JP Racing Dragfest Series. The NRL season got underway and after only two rounds the Titans were on the mat floored by injuries. The Hayne plane was out of service grounded for several weeks after an ankle injury cut short his flight. In FNQ the Cowboys were coming to terms news Matt Scott was out for the season RSL held their nerve in the grand final of the Stanthorpe Cricket competition to claim a nine run win and wrap up the premiership. South’s Jordan Lanza was named Player of the Final. The Inglewood Roosters picked up from where they left off on 2016 winning the Border Rugby League pre season round robin competition at Macintyre Oval. The Women’s AFL competition proved a winner and in a thrilling final the Lions girls went down to Adelaide. The game went down to the wire with a kick on the siren giving the Lions one last crack at a win but it was not too be. APRIL THE Queensland Polocrosse season kicked off with an action packed program of events. Warwick’s Cunningham Polocrosse Club hosted the Cooper Cup showcasing the trans-Tasman rivalry with hard-fought games. At the Stanthorpe Golf Club, the annual Maureen Bates Memorial Day Golf Day proved popular. Members of the Stanthorpe Golf club joined Sunday Sporters and visitors. The Pacific nations treated fans to style of expansive and exciting rugby league rarely seen in week to week NRL games. The curtain came down on the annual NSW City Country game with City taking bragging honours in the finale. Sydney FC capped off a stellar season with a nail biting win over a brave Melbourne Victory in the A League grand final. After weeks of uncertainty the BRL 2017 competition kicked off with games in Killarney and Stanthorpe. Killarney opened the season with a 22-14 win over Tenterfield and in Stanthorpe the young Gremlins were no match for the reigning premiers Inglewood. Allman Park hosted the RSL Memorial Day. In a tip to some real racing history jockey Cyril Small of Vo Rogue fame rode a winner the memorable Vo Rogue colours. Small was at his best winning on the Fusi Fox. The arrival of members of the Hodgson clan numbers swelled at the Wallangarra Golf Club for the annual Frank Hodgson Memorial Trophy, “The Runner Trophy“. Steve Hampstead was the eventual winner and was extremely proud to be presented with the unique trophy that means so much to Wallangarra golfers. JUNE Raffa Nadal notched up his 10th title at Roland Garros. Surely a record that is unlikely to be broken. Nadal continued his dominance on the clay court. Alex Popyrin became the first Australian
to win the junior title at Roland Garros. The Queensland selectors made some tough but necessary selection decisions for Origin Two after the Maroons lack lustre performance in game one . While the Queenslanders concentrated on “beating the Blues“ It surprised some when it was announced the NSW Origin side had based themselves at the Casino - wonder if they bet on red? The Maroon’s defied the odds and some pundits - never underestimate the power of the Maroon jersey. The Titans continued to be a team in disarray with an unbelievable injury list taking its toll Titan’s Coach Neil Henry must have been left wondering what he had done to deserve such bad karma. The Cowboys and Eels headed to NT but there was no joy for Eel’s supporters after a JT master class . Pakistan lifted the Champions Trophy at Lords in the final against India. As the Australian cricketers prepared to tour Bangladesh in August and with an Ashes series looming the dispute between the Players and Cricket Australia continued. The Men of League Foundation celebrated 15 years of caring for the men, women and children of the rugby league community. On the international stage the Kiwis took home the Auld Mug, the America’s Cup. JULY The Horn Pacquiao battle of Brisbane was an amazing display of courage talent determination and self-belief. The back story made it all the more special and is now written in blood in our sporting folklore. Queensland supporters will basking in the success of the Mighty Maroons and an amazing 2017 series win for quite sometime. Even Blue’s supporters have begrudgingly acknowledged the amazing efforts of the 2017 Maroons. In local golfing circles Mark McCosker won the Finch Cup. Another large field of bowlers and beginners hit the green at the Tannymorel Bowls club for Round three of the popular Tanny Classic. Construction of anew equipment shed and additional awnings saw some games at the Stanthorpe Croquet court were disrupted. The Tenterfield Tigers celebrated the annual Aub Gillespie Day with a win over the Gremlins. The makeup of the TRL top six was up in the air with just three rounds of competition left to play. AUGUST At the business end of the NRL season cracks were beginning to appear and there were upsets aplenty with the cellar dwelling Knights putting the Dragons to the sword. Street Orienteering hit Warwick and Killarney as the Bullecourt Boulder Bounders extended an invitation to runners to join them in a series of street orienteering events. Talented Warwick Netballer Caitlin Skaines received an invitation to join a group of emerging Netballers at four day camp in Caloundra after catching the selector’s eye at the inter-district finals and the state age championships. At Stanthorpe Sporters stalwart Jim Mitchell, who has been around the sand traps for quite a while finally nailed a win in the Sunday competition. Wattles enhanced their 2017 premiership credentials with a win over Highfields last week. The Stanthorpe Gremlins hosted the second of the double header games in the 2017 .The Inglewood Roosters defended the Patron’s Cup. In a gutsy effort they scored in the dying seconds of the game after Tenterfield blew a 24 nil early lead. Few predicated the farewell to Usain Bolt would not have a happily ever after ending however Bolt went down to the villain, two time drug cheat Justin Gatling and then suffered a calf injury in his final race. Athletics followers around the world were saddened by the news that one of our greatest ever athletes Betty Cuthbert had lost her long battle with illness. The Stanthorpe football Association held their Night of Nights presentation evening at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Life Membership to Ballandean Club and Football Stanthorpe stalwart Neil Newman. The mighty Winx , showed her true grit and amazing ability to gobble up the field in the straight in her comeback win at Randwick. It was win no 18 on the trot With two NRL rounds to play the Melbourne Storm had the Minor Premiership signed sealed and delivered. In other NRL news, the dogs were barking the mail, the village drums beating the tune but still it was a shock to many when the Titans CEO announced the immediate sacking of Coach Neil. The Inglewood Roosters were cock a hoop on Saturday after securing back to back grand final wins after their success in the 2017 BRL grand final. The Tenterfield Tigers fell at the final hurdle making it to yet another grand final. Player of the Year was Inglewood captain Brent Osborne SEPTEMBER Once considered minnows on the world stage, Bangladesh posted their first win against Australia last week. United won a thrilling Stanthorpe Football grand final hosted for the first time by Ballandean.
In an unusual turn of events even the referee was feeling the pinch. Michael Ho was forced to retire with a leg injury. The day was a great showcase of local football talent. Competitors from as young as 10 to 85 made up the 180 Orienteers from across Australia and a contingent from overseas navigated their way through the Amiens forest for the Orienteering Qld Championships. Organisers of the Mallet Players Come N Try Day at the Stanthorpe Croquet facilities were pleased with the number of prospective players who attended their open day on Saturday. They came they tried and they enjoyed. The Ballandean Billycart Bash notched up another success in 2017. Keeping the win “in house” in the open event was Ballandean State School Acting Principal, Sue Evans racing one of the stable of Haynes Racing Carts. Little Athletics held a successful sign on day in Stanthorpe The best and brightest of the AFL attended the Brownlow Medal Dusty Martin started as short as Winx in a mid week maiden and the mail was spot on Warwick Drag Racing Association played host to the VW drag racing weekend now in its twelfth year. The event has grown into Australia’s premier VW motorsport weekend. The Kangaroos and Jillaroos both notched up wins of their PNG rivals OCTOBER The NRL and AFL seasons drew to a close in a magnificent weekend of finals. Richmond’s Brownlow medallist Dusty Martin was named Norm Smith medallist Billy Slater showed us just a touch of how hard he has worked to get back to his superstar best when emotions spilled over after winning the Clive Churchill medal. The Stanthorpe Bowls Club hosted the inaugural Churches of Christ Classic on Friday with many visiting bowlers joining the locals on perfectly prepared greens. Teams played a new format - Fast Fours -rolled out for the first time in Stanthorpe. At Bathurst Warwick product Matt Campbell took up the co drivers spot beside Shane van Gisberg in the Red Bull Motor Racing car 97. Campbell recovered well from an early scare and showed plenty of fight and ticker and a legion of local supporters dared to dream for the 23 year old. The Socceroos finally booked themselves a trip to Honduras after a nail biting win over a very brave Syria. Rain threatened to disrupt the Warwick Turf Club’s signature event the Warwick Cup Meeting at Allman Park. Grafton galloper Bel Flyer franked his good recent form to land a win in the Cup. Stanthorpe golfers teed off in Pink for Breast Cancer Research.’ The event was disrupted by the weather. Only a handful of water logged competitor finished the entire 18 holes.
CASEY O’CONNOR
The opportunity to hear Jeff Horn World Champion boxer speak at a luncheon organised by the SDRC and perhaps even the possibility of meeting Horn in person was an opportunity too good to pass up and one of my highlights in 2017. Horn’s simple message “Aim High. After months of hard work it was heart break for the Stanthorpe Jockey Club when rain ruined what promised to be a successful Stanthorpe Cup meeting. Jockeys declared they were not satisfied the surface was safe and elected not to ride. Stewards abandoned the meeting. Three Granite Belt identities were chosen to carry the Commonwealth Games Baton - rewarded for their services to the community and to sport in the district. Steve McEvoy, Angie Sims and Michael Hayes will be flying the flag for the locals. Winx’s won an historic third Cox Plate win and like Black Caviar before her has dragged the crowds back to racing in droves. The Rugby League world and sporting mourned the death of Matt Callender. The former Channel Nine boss of NRL succumbed to brain cancer and was the man behind the Beanie for Brain Cancer round this year which raised almost $2 million for research into the disease. NOVEMBER Corey Brown and Rekindling saluted the in the Melbourne Cup handing 24-year-old Joseph O’Brien his first Cup in the infancy of his training career Trouble was brewing in and around the BRL football clubs with several AGM’s put on hold for lack of support from volunteers. On the big stage the Rugby League World Cup got underway. The Tongan and Samoan sides added colour and spark to the competition and their pre game rituals enough to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. PNG proved to be great entertainers. Rumours surfaced the Hayne plane would be jetting into the eels hangar before the end of the year - of course denied by all involved. The local cricket seasons kicked off with South’s in Stanthorpe and Maryvale Condamine in Warwick showing good early form. The Stanthorpe Croquet courts were back in action after players took some time out while the court underwent some maintenance. Players returning to play four disciplines of the game. The final round of another popular Tanny classic was decided. Brett Grayson claimed the crown after and despite his claims there is no truth in the rumour that the win has earned him a guernsey at the GC 2018 Commonwealth games. Teams from Warwick, Clifton, Toowoomba, Dalby and Chinchilla filled all ten of the Warwick Tennis Association Courts as players took part in the final of the South Tennis League played in the exciting Fast 4 format. Warwick was
represented by two teams. The Aussie cricketers got the Ashes series off to a great start with a comprehensive win over the Poms at the Gabba and it looked like it would be a long trip for the visitors. DECEMBER Maryvale headed into the Christmas break undefeated in the Condamine Cricket competition. News that the Border Rugby League would not form for the 2018 season is a body blow to our local communities who have followed their football teams through heady days of success and darker days of uncertainty. It is a blow for the many volunteers over the years who have given much time and effort to the competition. Stanthorpe won back the Wickets O’Connor trophy after a fine performance against the Queensland Cricketers Club Over 40’s side. Alan Cameron wound back the clock to pick up the Stanthorpe Players man of the Match Award. Steve Hampstead put his name on the Mug of Mugs with a win in the December event at the Wallangarra Golf Club The second Ashes Test, the day night Pink Ball test proved a big winner for Cricket Australia, fans and the Aussie cricket side. Now two up and off to the WACA and MCG hoping to keep the record intact. Adelaide Test a “must do’ for all cricket fans. The Rugby League World Cup culminated with wins for both the Jillaroos and Kangaroos. The Jillaroos made sure they sent their retiring stars including Killarney’s Steph Hancock out with worthy World Cup win. Cooper Cronk announced his retirement from representative football. We will not see the Cronk Smith and Slater show again. Matt Campbell has put in the hard yards in motor sport and is now reaping the rewards. The young Warwick driver signing a new deal with Porsche that will see him remain with the team for the coming year. The Hayne plane finally left the Gold Coast runway and received clearance from air traffic controllers to land at Pirtek Stadium. Good luck with that Eels fans. Warwick Turf club hosted another successful and popular Boxing Day meeting with many using the meeting as an opportunity to catch up and connect with family and friends. The famed Boxing Day Test proved a fizzer with the wicket a disaster. The Poms at least salvaged a draw but disappointing for the 200,000 spectators who purchased tickets. Questions will have to be answered re “that Pitch“ 2017 has slipped by and all the ups and downs are but a memory. It’s time to look forward to all that 2018 has to offer as we celebrate a wonderful series win by the Aussie cricketers - in particular Steve Smith don’t get too comfortable. The BBL final is around the corner the ODI series about to start and the NRL season only weeks away. Are you salivating? I am.
