An arson attack is something that could break many business owners, but thanks to the unwavering support of the local community, the Heritage Springs Cafe came out of the June 2017 incident stronger than ever. Their demonstration of strength and true community spirit in the face of devastation is why the cafe and its supporters have been named the Pakenham-Officer Star News 2017 People of the Year. The cafe made headlines after it was firebombed by three men, who entered the premises, sprayed accelerant through the shop, and set it alight just before 2.30am on Sunday 11 June. When owner Thida Lim arrived to open at about 7.15am she found her premises cordoned off by police who told her the shopping centre would not open until further notice. She said nothing prepared her for what she saw when the police arson squad gave the allclear about 1pm and allowed her inside. According to Ms Lim, every drawer was open and the tips jar was gone. “I was shocked and completely devastated,” Ms Lim said. “It was clear the people who did this were looking for money.” Despite having to fork out over $170,000 of her own money to repair the charred interior and shattered windows, Ms Lim believes the business is stronger for it. But she admits she wouldn’t have made it through without the support of her “beautiful” local community. Thida and her husband Kim moved to Heritage Springs almost four years ago when they bought the Heritage Springs Cafe, and since then they have become much-loved locals. In the days following the attack, 200 mums from the neighbouring Heritage Springs Primary School paid the caf¨¦ owner a visit, showering her with hugs and messages of support. “There were lots of cuddles and hugs. I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I cried,” Ms Lim said. Having to fork over $170,000 of her own money to cover repairs of the charred interior and shattered windows, Ms Lim was initially worried about how she was going to pay bills and put food on the table. But in an admirable display of community
