MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It is well documented that people on holiday behave differently than they do in their normal lives. And it’s not a modern day phenomenon.

Throughout history there have been reports of artists travelling to escape the banality of their urban lives, to seek inspiration or spiritual awakening or appease their restlessness.

As they shrug off their work responsibilities and release their inhibitions holidaymakers have been known to take risks they wouldn’t normally.

Twice in the past few weeks we have been met at the Peregian Beach roundabout by cars travelling around it the wrong way, seen cyclists all over the roads and footpaths and witnessed people taking selfies anywhere and everywhere.

Having a few drinks and going swimming has also gotten a couple of tourists into a bit of trouble.

I guess it is the silly season.

BY MARGARET MACCOLL The biggest prawn haul in seven years has brought income to Noosa prawners and rescued a Noosaville fish market from closure but will not halt research into sustainable prawn populations in the Noosa River and Lakes system.

Sea Queen Marine Products owner Norm Fiumara said if the prawns hadn't arrived this year they "would have been broke" "We haven't had prawns from the river since 2011 since they had floods," he said.

"In about a week we've got about three tonne out of there. Some they are getting are a pretty good size. We're trying not to get the smaller ones. We want them to come back. We want them to grow."

Norm said they used to get 60 to 70 tonne from the river but he wasn't complaining.

He said the prawns may run for another week or three months but were hard to predict.

He said once out of the river the prawns would grow in the waters in front of Noosa main beach from the National Park to Noosa North Shore and by April would be beautiful and sweet and good for cooking while the current catch would be used for bait. Fisherman Sean White said they had catching prawns throughout Noosa's river and lakes.

Retired fisherman Trevor Clarey said the recent rains had provided the ideal conditions for the prawns to thrive and predicted conditions over the week would be ideal for both commercial and recreational prawn fishers and previous runs had drawn fishers from Caboolture to Gympie.

Trevor said mother nature having restored the prawns to the river would save the taxpayers from investing in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation's proposed research into prawn stocks.

However in a statement prepared by NBRF chairman Dick Barnes, Noosa Parks Association president Michael Gloster and The Thomas Foundation's Rowland Hill they say they "are committed to seeing sustainable prawn populations in the Noosa River and Lakes system".

"While heavy rains can provide temporary spikes in catch, overall local prawn catches are well down," they said.

"According to historical records, high catches attracted an unsustainable level of trawling in the early 1960s. In 1961, what was a bumper year for prawners,

up to 40 trawlers on Lake Weyba and Lake Cootharaba netted 400,000kg of prawns. After two decades, the average annual catch dwindled to just one-tenth of the peak raising concerns for overexploitation and the sustainability of prawn stocks in the Noosa lakes.

"Prawn catches are helped by healthy estuaries receiving peak freshwater flows from healthy catchments, as well as strong fisheries management.

"As a consequence, the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation has allocated funds to restore estuary health with 14 new oyster reefs, repair catchments with tree planting by Noosa Landcare and a small grant for the University of Queensland to research the drivers and threats to local prawn productivity." ●

STRONG TOURISM SEASON AS BEACHES FILL Noosa has had one of its strongest summer seasons on record with many tourism operators across a selection of industries including accommodation providers, restaurateurs and tour operators reporting solid booking right through to the Australia Day long weekend.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said while official visitor numbers from Tourism Research Australia for this period wouldn't be available for a few months, Tourism Noosa's members as well as the Noosa Visitor Information Centre in Hastings Street have reported strong visitation, with last minute requests

"Solid visitation for Noosa is set to

continue over the oncoming months with a range of key events bringing interstate and international visitors to the region," he said. "The Noosa Summer Swim now in its 5th year kicks off the events calendar in early February followed by the Noosa Festival of Surfing in March which brings competitors and spectators from across the globe in March.

"As we continue to welcome visitors to Noosa over the summer season, it is great to remember that nearly $900 million is injected into our economy from visitors, making tourism the largest economic contribution to the Noosa region, helping to retain and create local jobs." ●

Noosa police say despite the crowds in the Shire most people have been well behaved.

Senior sergeant Ben Carroll said there had been a couple of noisy parties and a few disturbances but most people were just enjoying a relaxing holiday in the good weather.

There have been a couple of incidents of note.

Police have charged an 18-yearold Yandina man with stealing and assault occasioning bodily harm in company after two youths entered the 7-11 store at Noosa Junction and left with some pies.

The man was arrested and released on bail to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday 1 February.

Snr sgt Carroll said police were continuing to search for another person whose identity they knew and they were being helped with their inquiries by a 16-year-old.

Police said a 7-11 store employee was left with a sore back and abrasions following the incident.

Police have charged a man and a woman following investigations into the alleged theft of livestock last month.

Police allege on December 7, a 28-year-old man and a 20-yearold woman entered a property on Panna Road, Beerburrum and stole a quantity of live chickens and live pigs.

They allege on the same day, the pair entered a property on Male Road and stole 13 chickens.

A 28-year-old Yaroomba man and a 20-year-old Ashgrove woman have been charged with two counts each of entering a premises and committing an indictable offence, one count each of stealing and one count each of stealing an animal that is stock.

They are due to attend the Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday 23 January. ●

Travelling through Costa Rica with Metallica is surely something any young bloke would only dream about. Bobbing around in the ocean and chasing waves with the original kings of metal doesn’t happen to everyone, but it happened to Jake Donlen.

A far cry from Sunshine Beach High School and busting it in the trenches as a young plumber making ends meet, Jakes life has taken some serious lunges toward the stars and he is not taking a moment of it for granted.

Videographer, artist and all round creative heavyweight, Jake Donlen has filmed Michael Franti in Bali and shared time with John Butler Trio with his company Runamuk Visuals. He’s brought old walls to life, skate parks into the future and inspiration to those who know him.

The guy has an infectious vibe. You get the feeling that he really gets what it’s all about - life. I guess that’s what

Living by the motto ‘cast your own shadow,’ Jake had aspirations, but as a young guy, he was on a very different path. Surfing and mucking about with mates around Noosa was fun, but he needed to pay the bills and began plumbing.

Casting his shadow would have to wait.

“I was a very average plumber. I was good with the theory and I could dig a big old hole, but didn’t want to know about it. So many creative talented kids stumble into paths for financial stability and peer pressure,” he said.

Digging everyday eventually took its toll on his body and when his wrists blew out, his parents bought him a camera.

He could finally show others what was in his imagination.

“It was an Alod Hi8 camera for $100 at cash converters; That camera has seen some funny times with our little crew.

“I took it everywhere I went. I started documenting everything we did - Sunny Coast version of Jackass really. I

loved capturing and recording memories.

But Jake was about to step into the darkness for a while.

In 2005, Donlen’s world stopped, along with his heart.

“I was at Noosa one weekend and out with mates. I sat down at Hastings Street and felt like I was dying. My heart was pounding out of my chest.”

Falling in and out of consciousness, he knew something was really wrong.

“I’d been partying pretty hard, so everyone thought I was just partied out and we went home.

“Turns out I was in the middle of a massive cardiac arrest and we didn’t know it.

After making it home, Jake crawled into the bedroom and lay on the floor. His heart stopped. He was 25.

Jake’s partner woke to find him unconscious and began CPR. Care Flight had to defibrillate him and with no response each time, the chance of survival lessened. It was on their eighth attempt that against all medical odds, Jake’s heart began working again.

“Wade Goodall, is one of my best mates. One of the most innovative surfers of our time, and a character that I have grown up with not only as good mates but as a peer. We did a lot for each other.”

And one of those things was Billabong. Wade called Jake while his was recovering from his ordeal and propped him for a job with Billabong Australia. He began working for the surf brand icon and filmed his first real surf movie for them - Passion Pop. He went on to become Billabong Australia’s surf photographer for several years and worked with some of surfings biggest legends such as Laurie Towner, Ryan Campbell, Lee Wilson, Jordy smith, Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson, Taj Burrow and Occy. Jake shot sunrise to sunset and had begun to cast his own shadow.During his time with Billabong he filmed Occy Tribute, Passion Pop, Creative Destruction, Still Filthy, Inside the Junior Series, Alive in Tahiti and Tropical Punch.

Eventually he came home to Noosa to be with his father who he would lose to cancer a few months later.

“Billabong stood by me and let me work externally from Noosa - I have a lot of respect for Andrew Flitton for this reason.

“My dad was a special man - the sort of man that would bring you a smile just by smiling at you. He still has one of my favourite styles in the water (surfing) that I have ever seen. I miss the man every day.”

RV LIFE He was young and healthy, but had somehow suffered a type of cardiac arrest that is almost always fatal. Doctors warned his family that there was a good chance he would have serious brain damage when he woke up from his coma.

A specialist later told him that there is only a one and fifty thousand chance of living through it.

“The doctors said I was a complete freak of nature.

People just don’t survive this.” But he had.

A young guy just starting out in life was given a second chance at it. With an adventurous spirit, and a million pictures in his head this cheeky, big hearted artist would fight his way through anxiety and darkness to put the pieces back together.

Sometimes, it just takes a mate to nudge us in the right direction and after months of struggling with his recovery, a friend created a life-changing opportunity for Jake.

With over 10 years spent in the surf industry, Jake knew he wanted to work for himself. Runamuk Visuals (RV) was born.

“It’s entertainment for the people who don’t care about information and figures of the industry, but more so the riders and artists who wave the flags of these companies.”

Although RV was steady to grow, the multi-media production company has really hit its stride in the creative world with a brand that is real, edgy and super cool. It feels like a tapestry of Jake in way. For businesses with the same vibe, Jake has become a bit of a master at capturing something very unique and special for them. His unmistakable style is larger than life on sky-high walls and buildings. The Sunshine Beach skate park has had an RV revamp as has Jake’s favourite local haunt the Village Bicycle.

His filming is understated. It feels old worldly while also feeling ahead of its time. The way Jake captures images in film is quietly beautiful. He nails a raw street vibe and you can’t help but genuinely enjoy watching an ad reel you

would normally skip over. It’s got heart, it’s got punch.

“Our viewers are the young, creative, fresh and real people of the boarding, art and music world. The kids that think with their own heads not the neighbours. The reason why our viewers are such is because we know them, we surf with them, work with them, party with them. We are young, talented, motivated, passionate and always moving forward.”

A dad of two littlies, Jakes motivation to take his vision to a whole other level is now fuelled by love.

“I want to create a brand that I can hand down to my kids, even if they want to choose a different path.”

Filming for Red Bull and Monster Energy is good for business, but casting his own shadow isn’t about the big bucks.

“Going to Mission Mexico that is the most meaningful use of my skills I have seen. It is an orphanage in Tapachula run by Noosa locals. They have saved the lives of 50-plus kids by taking them to the ocean and teaching them to surf.

“It was a purposeful and passionate project and one that I have never reached again. A good friend of ours saw the video, and when we returned to catch up, he asked me to find out what they need.

“Two weeks later a VHS case arrived at the mission with $78,000 in it. That man was Mike Callahan - a man that changed the lives of 50 kids. Kids that had seen their families murdered with machetes. It was massive that project. I think about it a lot,” said Jake.

Fuelled by his experiences with anxiety, Jake is inspired to forge meaningful projects with RV in the future.

“My anxiety was a really dark phase. No one talked about it back then. I didn’t know what it was. I put a lot of pressure on myself. I don’t do that to myself anymore, it just doesn’t matter in the scheme of things.

“I want to work on projects with heart - one in particular is film project about Mental Health. I’ve lost a best mate to suicide and I have battled insomnia and anxiety throughout my career. Anxiety is the realest force I have felt since first falling in love. It’s real. Reach out to those you know if they seem a little off their game - a phone call can change their life.

“I feel like I’m here to do something with purpose,” he said.

“I’m going back to taking jobs for the love of it, I want to lift the clothing side of the brand and paint a hell of a lot more walls,” he said.“I want to do a project about street people too. To shine a light on a dark place - that’s really important to me now.” ●

NEWS CRUSADE IS ON Queensland Koala Crusaders will take a step forward in involving the community in koala conservation with the introduction this year of Koala Community Rescue Awareness Initiative Workshops.

QKC president Meghan Halverson said the first workshop would include findings from a report on Noosa's koala status conducted by Dr Jon Hanger from Endeavour Veterinary Ecology and Professor Peter Timms from the University of the Sunshine Coast under the Richard Branson Koala Conservancy.

She said in 2018 the workshops, run as part of the Noosa Council Community Grant Programs, would provide an overview of local initiatives in the Noosa Biosphere and Sunshine Coast regions to facilitate the training and involvement of our community in Koala Conservation.

TAG WILL TELL Last week Turtlecare turtle volunteers and Sunshine Coast council conservation officers placed a tag on a female loggerhead that will relay its movements via satellite over the next 12 months.

The turtle, one of many loggerheads that lay their eggs annually on Sunshine Coast beaches, made her way up Shelly Beach to lay 139 eggs.

As part of an ongoing research project into turtle behaviours and habitat Sunshine Coast Council, in collaboration with Dr Col Limpus from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, will be tracking the turtle to track her travels in between nesting seasons.

Council Conservation Officer Kate Hofmeister said council and TurtleCare volunteers were excited and proud to be partnering with Dr Col Limpus in his 50th year of turtle research in Queensland using innovative GPS trackers.

The tag will track the movements of the turtle providing valuable information for council staff and researchers. ●

Paramedics had arrived and the helicopter also landed to give any necessary support; one was eventually taken to hospital. At the completion of the rescue it is sad to relate that the lifesavers were subjected to foul mouth drunken abuse by one of the men just rescued; and guess what-- it was Christmas Eve. To Lachie Lansdown, John Reeves and David James--Happy New Year boys, you did our community proud.

In Noosa's lead up to Christmas the carnival results indicate that things are looking good for the forthcoming State and National Titles. In early December Noosa's

performance at the North Wollongong carnival in which their girls once again showed the way, their results were indeed very encouraging. Their performance in the Taplin event which Noosa won and the overall performance of the u/17 boys were in the words of Coach Darren Mercer, "A great result against top competitors from all over the east coast." Well done, a great lead up and all the best for the season ahead.

Sweet-talk amongst the team was the return of Coach Darren Mercer to the competition arena. When a ski team got caught one short the old man took the challenge and in his home turf showed the young ones he still has what it takes; great display of team spirit from the club coach. â—?

going to the other three. They were easily 100 mts. out and in a state of panic with one being unconscious. As I swam closer I could see that one of the men was sitting on the back of his unconscious mate using him as a safety devise. He had panicked and was in fear of his life.''

As luck would have it Wave Runner19 Jet Rescue Ski, driven by lifesaver David James, entered the Bay and immediately assisted with the floating men, taking two to the beach. By this time the unconscious patient had sunk.

"I dived under to grab him and get him up and onto the sled behind the ski which had just returned; he was in a bad way foaming at the mouth. On returning to the beach we did several minutes of compressions draining the water from his

How many times have we in the lifesaving movement advised our beach goers of two major dangers; one is bathing at the very beautiful but unpatrolled Alexandria Bay and the other is that alcohol and swimming in big surf does not mix.

Well as unbelievable as it may seem, right on Christmas a group of men ignored both warnings and in what can only be described as an arrogant and totally irresponsible act of stupidity, became well and truly intoxicated and then proceeded to go swimming at the Alexandria Bay (A Bay) in the late afternoon.

As luck would have it Lachie Lansdown a 21-year-old veteran Sunshine Beach lifesaver, on patrol at Sunshine, had permission to do a roving ATV, (All Terrain Vehicle), courtesy patrol into A Bay. His reason was twofold: to check the beach situation and also familiarise his new patrol mate John Reeves, with the procedure of the roving patrols.

Parking the patrol vehicle and walking towards the beach they suddenly spotted a group of six people four of whom were in the water some 100 mts. from the beach in big trouble; and one appeared to be unconscious. However as they ran across the beach heading for the surf they became aware of many empty beer bottles; it was obvious that they were about to risk their lives on this dangerous unpatrolled beach for a group of drunks.

Cooroibah artists Vaughan and Karen Robinson struggled to believe they were the winners of a brand new, gleaming Nissan sports car when they collected it from Harvey Norman Noosa last Friday.

Vaughan bought an LG Super UHD TV from Harvey Norman Noosa about six months ago, enabling him to go in the draw for the Nissan 370Z Coupe valued at $66,836.

"I had an old LG plasma TV and it stopped working so I came to Harvey Norman to get another one," Vaughan said.

His entry almost didn't happen with the reluctant local talked into putting in his entry.

"The lady was trying to get me to fill in the form," he said.

Fortunately the form went in and Vaughan forgot about it until Debbie from Harvey Norman rang.

"I got this phone call from Harvey Norman. Karen had a frig getting fixed and I thought it was about that. I said, what did you say? It's weird when someone tells you you've won a car," he said.

"I'm getting used to it."

While Vaughan said he was happy with his old 4WD Toyota the smile on his face when he took his new Nissan for a test drive spoke volumes, and Vaughan's wife Karen embraced the win saying she had always loved sports cars.

Darryl Homan and partner Leonie Bowd of Doonan will be jetting off in April on a $28,000 world holiday visiting China, Hong Kong, Egypt, Jordan, Italy, England, Mexico and the US. To win the competition Darryl spent just over $50 at Harvey Norman Noosa to go into the draw to win the trip for two to the Seven Wonders of the World.

Researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast are looking for drivers aged 60 years and over to be involved in a study into hazard perception.

USC Senior Research Fellow Dr Bridie Scott-Parker said her team would use a state-of-the-art driving simulator and other methods to assess how senior motorists view possible road hazards.

"A combination of age-related driving and health factors can contribute to the road safety risks associated with ageing and driving," Dr Scott-Parker said.

"My earlier simulator-based research found some changes in the situation awareness of senior drivers compared to middle-aged drivers, so this study will explore the nature and magnitude of these changes in this skill that is critical for safe driving.

"Situation awareness involves accurately detecting hazards in the environment and understanding these hazards.

"Using this information, drivers can then predict the nature of how these hazards may change and impact upon the safety of not only the driver, but also other road users."

Dr Scott-Parker said people who are aged 60 or over and drive at least two hours a month could volunteer for the research project.

She said each participant would be asked to complete a survey and have their view of a real roadway recorded on a GoPro camera during everyday driving for one week.

A SURE BET The Bruce Highway has forever been and will continue to be an accident prone motorway. It's a poor man's Autobahn.

So an ongoing "Bruce Toll" Lottery would build it to world class standards and guarantee its maintenance and upkeep forever and a day. The simplest solutions where you can kill two birds with one stone and spend the rest of your working/ retirement days travelling from point A to B safely is worth a couple of dollars to win a million at the same time.

Why this year? Why now has Melbourne's Flinders St Station become a prime target for 'ice addicted revenge?' These aren't our people doing this, these were forced out of their homes, migrated to a strange environment and obviously struggling.

I get it. I too as an Australian kid struggled, my family could not spoil me, there were no provisions to. But I don't want to bomb my neighbour because of that fact.

My country once contained peaceful, safe, happy dwellers, most hung over the BBQ. The kids hung out on the street, our clothes hung out on the line.

But we weren't hung out.

My only question in all this is: These 'kids' haven't the education, finesse or money to orchestrate the importing of the very ingredient they need to make their drug of choice.

So who is? It comes out of China. We, as a society need to question more so what is going on above the glass ceiling. Who's importing the product, how is it getting into our country and what is the intent for doing so?

We'll never be privy to that answer.

How come such a lethal drug has manifested so profusely on our streets? Let's not point the bone at our police, they take orders from above. Let's look at our Police Minister, the Government he serves and question their intent of allowing such 'self-inflicting genocide' to occur. All Political Parties are a privy to this, we the people just aren't invited.

There is a lot more going on than what meets the eye. Don't listen to media, they're puppeteer-ed like our foot police. As there is in Aged Care, a hierarchy controlling things so high above that we on the ground level aren't privy to but suffer due to their hierarchical silence as they pocket independent riches off the weak or the worker.

LOOKING FOR A RETURN The local Noosa prawn trawlers have been harvesting prawns from our magical Noosa River System this last week.

One day's catch was 1.8 tonne alone from only two boats.

The document on page 2/7 of the http:// noosabiosphere.org.au/posts/bringing-fishlife-back shows an amount of some $485,434 allocated (in part) for "Restoring prawn stocks in the Noosa river and lakes".

Given Mother Nature has done her job for us, Can we have that component of the Noosa Ratepayers hard earned $485,434K returned to our public coffers.

BAD TASTE There are some truly sadistic kids around and I believe it's due to bad parenting.

My quiet afternoon contemplation and chai latte was interrupted by primary school aged children who set up a cruel game of baiting a mindless scrub turkey with bread.

The two children lured the turkey towards them with each morsel of bread, until

it was within easy reaching distance. They then brutally grabbed the bird by its wings and it flapped around in a panicked attempt to free itself. It was horrific to witness.

I looked over at the children's parents for intervention and was disgusted to see them laughing!

I glared at the children as I stood up and walked towards them, readying myself to take action (as their parents obviously didn't care). I was just about to use my angry teacher voice, but my moving into "their space" coupled with a death stare was enough for the children to realise that their actions were abhorrent and spectators in the park were not approving of their heinous behaviour.

The turkey was released and the children squealed with delight as it ran away.

I lost my appetite for the chai and decided to leave the park. I was obviously in very bad company.

WHAT A MESS We came across a dog owner on Saturday morning at north Sunshine Beach with his dog who had just done his business (poo) in the sand and we kindly pointed out what had happened.

His reply was ... I'M NOT PICKING IT UP - IT'S A DOG BEACH - YOU DON'T HAVE TO - THE WAVES WILL CLEAN IT UP. We asked him again but he was adamant it was not his responsibility.

This is the type of tourist you don't want.

A few hours later a young family came down to the beach and was greeted with this mess in the sand - a present from the man.

BY TESSA MAPSTONE SET among a backdrop of rolling hills, green countryside and looming volcanic rock peaks 30km inland from Noosa Heads, Cooroy is a hinterland gem.

Once at the heart of the hinterland, Cooroy was first settled by timber millers in 1885, and the completion of the railway station in 1891 set the stage for the thriving timber and dairy industries to come.

In recent decades it was transformed into a farming and rural residential hub.

Now greenfield developments are providing new housing, cater for a growing demand for a quiet life and more affordable housing within the region.

Inquiries about property in and around the town have been increasing from buyers from Brisbane and the southern states, and while prices have been increasing steadily, Countryside Realty Noosa principal Robyn Kildey said properties here were still offering great value for money.

“Buyers are attracted to Cooroy for the sense of community,” she said.

The event is a fundraiser for their upcoming tour of Japan (February). Hobo Magic will be supported on the night by The Royal Artillery, The Unknowns, Cloacas and Dear Doonan.

Hobo Magic sling out a unique brand of old-school inspired psychedelic rock 'n' roll madness, with love of all things groovy and heavy. The talented trio kick out fresh sounding jams, spawned from the embers of the kings that riffed before them and strive to take the listener on a journey through uncharted places of the mind.

After their debut self-titled EP release and subsequent Australian tour in 2015, Hobo Magic have riffed and tripped around many of Australia's clubs, pubs, bedrooms, skate parks and warehouses, ripping out their style of heavy grooving mayhem. The acclaimed act has supported such International heavyweight bands such as Earthless, Elder, Lecherous Gaze, Red Fang, Kadavar, Radio Moscow and The Sword, leaving ringing ears and smiling faces in their wake.

2017 saw Hobo Magic record and release their eagerly anticipated second EP 'The World Today' to rave reviews, touring some of the country's best live music venues with diverse and exciting national and international touring acts,

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said as well as getting creative and making the most of all that delicious leftover food, residents would be saving time, money and the environment.

"Council's Living Smart Love your Leftovers campaign was launched in November with the aim to help residents see food waste in a different light," Cr McKay said.

"Food waste is estimated to cost the Australian economy around $20 billion each year.

"Nationally, consumers throw away around 3.1 million tonnes of edible food a year while another 2.2 million tonnes is disposed by the commercial and industrial sector.* "When you consider how much unnecessary waste is going to landfill every year, this is really alarming."

Cr McKay said council was committed to helping Sunshine Coast residents maintain their celebrated lifestyle by implementing the new Environment and Liveability Strategy over the coming years.

"This strategy includes our commitments

to share with the 'love your leftovers' community so you'll always have different options to feed your family without needing to leave the house or fork out lots of money."

Cut each chicken breast through the middle horizontally to make 4 thin fillets. Place the sesame seeds on a large plate. Press 1 side of chicken in seeds to coat.

Step 3 Spray a large non-stick frying pan with oil and heat over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken, seed-side down, for 2 minutes or until golden.

Turn and cook for a further 3 minutes or until cooked through. Set aside to cool slightly.

Thickly slice.

Step 4 Meanwhile, steam the peas and broccoli until tender. Combine the tamari, tahini and honey.

Stir until smooth.

Step 5 Divide the rice, peas and broccoli among bowls.

Top with the chicken and watercress leaves and drizzle with the tamari dressing.

Beyondblue chair Julia Gillard has welcomed the Commonwealth Government's two-year funding extension for the beyondblue National Education Initiative to 30 June 2021.

Today's announcement by Federal Minister for Health, The Hon. Greg Hunt MP, follows the June 2017 grant of $52.7 million over two years for beyondblue to deliver the groundbreaking project.

The National Education Initiative will support early learning and school communities - school principals and teachers, service managers and staff, parents and carers - to support the mental health of Australian children and young people from the day they enter the education system to the end of year 12.

The new initiative is currently in the development and design phase and will be available free to all early learning services and primary and secondary schools from August 2018. beyondblue is leading the initiative with the support of Early Childhood Australia and headspace.

Ms Gillard said the Commonwealth Government's decision to now commit four years of funding to the initiative is a significant contribution to seizing the opportunity to build the most mentally healthy generation of young people we have ever seen.

"Minister Hunt attended beyondblue's December Board Meeting and showed in those discussions a deep knowledge of what is needed in mental health and a personal commitment to change. Today's announcement demonstrates the Minister's

action orientated approach to mental health and a much-needed longer-term perspective on funding," Ms Gillard said "Knowing the Minister is so invested in seeing the National Education Initiative succeed gives beyondblue an even greater determination to create a world class initiative for early learning services and schools.

"And we know when children and young people are mentally healthy they do better at school.

"The beyondblue National Education Initiative will support busy early learning services and schools to set kids up to thrive, and provide a how-to guide and easy access to training, lesson content and services. We want educators to know what to look out for when kids start to struggle and where to turn for help, and how to look after their own mental health," Ms Gillard said.

Research shows one in seven children in Australia has had a mental health disorder in the past 12 months and half of all mental health issues emerge before the age of 14.

The beyondblue National Education Initiative will provide online and on-theground information, support and advice on how to promote and maintain good mental health practices among staff and students. It will also help schools to support those experiencing a mental health issue and provide crisis support in the event a secondary school community experiences a suicide.

Ms Gillard said schools and early learning services can and do play a powerful role in nurturing good mental health and in the prevention and early intervention of mental health issues. â&#x2014;?

POMONA GALLERY EXHIBITION

CRICKET BACK WITH A BASH

BY RANDALL WOODLEY The Sunshine Coast Cricket Association fixtures resumed last Saturday. The four local teams played and ended the day with mixed results.

FIRSTS. A brilliant century by Jarrod Officer was not enough to overhaul the Caboolture Snakes target of 263 in their 50 overs match. Playing at Read Park on a good batting wicket and fast outfield, the visitors won the toss and batted first. The TNT openers bowled tightly without success and the Caboolture openers gradually built the score at about 4 runs an over. The Snakes put on 124 before the first wicket fell to Cody Rzeszkowski. Then Bear Gear took the wicket of the competitions top runs scorer with his first ball and bowled the other opener with his fifth ball. TNT were back in the game. However, although the wickets kept tumbling the scoring rate increased. Eventually Caboolture were all out for a very competitive score of 263 in the 49th over. Best bowling figures were to Ben Gear 2-23, Jarrod Officer 3-37, Cody

Batting after lunch the TNT innings started disastrously with 3 wickets, including a run-out, falling in the first 6 overs. TNT finished with 215. Next week the team travel to Glasshouse for a 50 overs match.

SECONDS. The team travelled to Caboolture, optimistic about a good performance. TNT chose to bat first and Chris Wright and Alexander Bennett opened up with a cautious start against the swinging ball to be 0-25 off the first 12 overs. After the fall of Wright's wicket, another teenager Darcy Morgan entered and the pair combined for a solid partnership to be 1-48 off 20 at the first drinks break. The team ended their 40 overs at 9- 131. Alex Bennett top scored with 37, Darcy Morgan 32 and Harrison Lea 19. It had been good to score with traditional shots so TNT felt they were in with a chance.

However, some ineffective bowling let all the pressure slip and after a few dropped chances off their sloggers, they scored the next 80 in 11 overs to win the game comfortably.

THIRDS. Playing Caloundra at Dale Officer oval the team won the toss and bowled first. Although the bowlers made use of the moving ball, Caloundra were able to register 201 off their 40 overs. It was one of the team's least disciplined bowling performances and the obligatory dropped catches let the opposition get away. Best bowling performance was from Cody Wright 3-35. Harry Wilkinson took 1-38 but he had at least 4 dropped catches off his bowling. TNT's final score of 136 was not good enough on the day.

FOURTHS The team had a long hot drive to Burpengary and batted first. The TNT boys adapted well to the conditions and after 40 overs had posted 150 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Best scorers were Luke Anstey 36, Craig Moore 22, Jonno Reynolds 18 and Nev Kratzmann 15. Tom Green, 12 no. and Justin Latimer, 8 no. batted together for the last 8 overs for a valuable 22 run partnership to give the total some respectability. ●

BY HEATH COSTELLO Vale: Edward "Teddy" Smith - Life Member Edward Smith (Teddy) passed away 28 December 2017, He was few days short of his 97th Birthday which would been on New Years Day. Condolences to his family on their loss.

Most around the club would know late last year that Ex-President Gary Moss had a quadruple bypass due to blockages in his coronary arteries. Gary is recovering well at home. Gary spent many years on the men's bowls committee including Games director for Three years & President for four years. On behalf of all at club, we all wish him a speedy recovery and a very healthy and happy new year. Thanks to Gary's close friend Bert De Koster is keeping all updated.

Premier sevens kicked off with two teams of seven players and a reserve representing the club in two divisions. Division 1 Section 6 travelled down to Salisbury in Brisbane to take on Tarragindi. Jay Dawe kicked of the afternoon in the Singles winning 31-13.

The fours were next and after being behind by as much as 10 shots after 15 ends. All four players lifted their game and won the last six ends to take the game 19-18. The pairs team played a very competitive game but lost. Division 3 Section 7 had a home game against Bramble Bay. Results were Singles win for Danny Crameri 30-20, The pairs took it too an extra end and won on the last ball 17-16. The Fours went down narrowly 21-24. This weekend Div 1 are at home to Pacific Paradise and Div 3 will travel a short distance to play coolum Beach at Coolum Beach. ●

IN IT FOR THE LONG RUN Endurance runners, Cassie Cohen, 22, and Jackson Bursill, 24 arrived in Noosa on Monday making the halfway mark in their 4000km journey from Cooktown to Melbourne to support refugees.

The pair were welcomed by members of Noosa Welcomes Refugees and Buddies Refugee Support Group when they arrived at Noosa National Park about 5.30pm.

Gabby Sutherland and Angela Mercuri of Buddies which advocates for just and compassionate treatment of refugees presented the runners with a cheque for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC).

The pair are raising funds form ASRC and aim to highlight the remarkable stories of refugees who have made Australia home.

Cassie and Jackson set off from Cooktown on 23 November. ●

Apart from the fact that they have such cool names Ocean, Barron, Reef, Summer etc the most notable thing about competitors in last week s WSL World Junior Championships at Kiama on the NSW South Coast was that so few of them were Australian. In the men s division only five of the 36 starters were Australian, which may have something to do with WSL s global representation laws, but the telling thing was that only two of our boys won their first round heats in typical Aussie beach break conditions. SURF DROUGHT STRIKES Noosa surfer and collector Gary Clist is one of a small club who can say they’ve lived in Noosa for half a century. (I’ve only been here a shade over half that, so it’s touch and go I’ll ever get there!)

So when Gary tells me that this holiday season and the last have produced the worst surf in 50 years, I can but believe him. I would have said 28. But whichever way you look at it, Huey has dealt us some crap so far, and the end is not in sight.

I can remember as a young grom growing up on a very different stretch of coast, there would be similar flat spells during the long summer break, and to relieve the boredom we’d skateboard in the empty school quadrangle, or wax up the tin bottoms of our sandboards and take to the dunes. And then, after a few days, or a week at worst, a southerly buster would sneak up the Tasman and unleash, and we’d cart our heavy boards around the headland past the sewage works and surf the protected righthand point until the grey skies began to clear, the wind would swing to the north and we’d have perfect conditions for our home break - a north wind pushing spray off the back of a south swell beachie.

It should be like that in reverse right here, right about now. And it will happen, if we keep the faith. Right Huey?

champion Peter Townend, has officially turned Chinese, as this photo taken at a press conference for the Chinese National Championships attests.

PT, one of the original Coolie Kids and founder of the Bronzed Aussies, has always been a flashy dresser, so he may have done it for the Star Trek uniform, which will probably fade to his trademark pink. Or he may have been tortured!

But seriously, PT is going great guns as national coach for the Peoples Republic, preparing a team of quite new surfers for participation in the first Olympic surfing event in France in 2020. He tells me in a mail that the stoke is already there and the skills not far behind. Meanwhile, his new job has seen him clock up 183 international flights in 2017, giving him more than enough points to get himself to the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing in March, where we’re hoping he’ll present

a special anniversary screening of Big Wednesday.

Andy tells me this sign went up on the M1 just before Christmas. Now that the Noosa World Surfing Reserve has been approved and we are working towards its dedication, it’s time we started thinking about doing the same in a prominent position on the Bruce.

We could hold a competition for best artwork within the local arts community, and even let you enter! As long as you don’t get too funky with those depth perception tricks.

The Annie Effect My friend Annie Grossman, Peregian’s (and possibly the world’s) best bookseller, is not

one to let the grass grow under her footpath, so scarcely out of the silly season, she kicks off the 2018 literary program with a pretty special event. Annie’s Books will launch Peregian Springs local Taryn Bashford’s first novel, The Harper Effect, with a chat show on the footpath with Taryn and a bunch of young female sporting champions (a major theme in the book) from 6pm next Thursday, January 18.

At least I think it’s Taryn’s first novel. I went on her website to do some research but only succeeded in confusing myself with novel titles. Anyway, Taryn seems to have been exceedingly busy and successful, and this young adult novel is being published in all major English-speaking markets.

But to get back to the launch, The Harper Effect deals with the trials and tribulations of a young girl who wants to become a tennis pro against all odds, including (spoiler alert) guilt at having nicked off with her sister’s boyfriend. Taryn will be in conversation with Kristina Lane (state U18 tennis captain), and triathlon champs Annelise Jefferies, Jane Larkin and Chloe McLennan, all of whom are budding teenage stars and none of whom (to my knowledge) has nicked off with a sister’s boyfriend, but are sure to have interesting insights on the pressures of achieving sporting success.

LEAGUE LEGENDS READY TO ROLL IN International Legends of League (ILOL), in conjunction with Noosa Council, Aaction Traffic, Hangloosa Noosa and Vac-king Vacuum Excavations last week announced that former State of Origin and Australian Test players will return to Noosa this year for their charity rugby league match.

The event will build on last year’s success with some of the biggest names in the game including Petero Civoniceva. Scott Prince, David Shillington, Ben Hannant, Kevin Campion and Nathan Friend on the field at Pirate Park on Saturday 3 February and proceeds going to several beneficiaries.

The Noosa event is the first of seven ILOL will host in regional centres throughout Queensland and NSW during its hectic 2018 program.

A select group of players will arrive in Noosa during the week of the game for community events and school visits. All players will be here Friday 2 February for a corporate day encompassing a bowls day with sponsors as well a dinner at Villa Noosa. Tickets are on sale with early bird group bookings to also receive a signed commemorative jersey.

The main event will be the 44th International Legends of League at Pirate Park on Saturday 3 February. The charity rugby league event will see many former State of Origin and NRL players take the field in a rugby league exhibition match between The Hangloosa Noosa Australian team and the Vac-King Vacuum Excavations Noosa All Stars.

Legends of League will return to Noosa this year.

Whilst the main game will be the feature event of the day, rugby league fans will be treated to a great afternoon of football including women’s games and girls games,

a Pacific Nations team and Noosa playing in grades including Under 16, 18’s, Reserve Grade and A Grade. Gates will open at 10.30am, the first game will kick off at

HOT TIMES WHEN WHITING ARE BITING The increase in air temperature has really pushed the water temperatures up in the river and with clean water and high tides there are plenty of larger whiting back on the chew. If using bait, live sand worms, yabbies and soldier crabs are perfect, for those keen to try surface fishing or sight casting. Early Morning conditions have been perfect with light breezes perfect to put a ripple on the water which gives those big elbow slapper cover and brings them up onto the banks to feed. . Trevally are still in good numbers around the lower reaches, fishing Woods Bay, the back of the Noosa Sound and Munna Point have seen some great results using surface lures in the low light with micro jigs and soft plastics working well as the sun gets a little higher in the sky. Flesh bait like cut pillies and mullet strips have worked well on bream, flatties and trevally. Make sure to use lighter fluorocarbon leaders to improve you bite rate. Jack are really on the chew with some large fish taken over the last few weeks, fishing into the night has been the key with live baits and large strip baits seeming to be the way to attract a red dog. The crabs are also up and walking, deeper holes near mangroves seem to be the best areas to set your pots, mullet as always seems to be the prime bait.

The one good thing about all this hot weather is it seems to have really brought on the mackeral. Good numbers of big spanish have been caught around Sunshine Reef, Halls Reef and Jew shoal on a range

of slow trolled dead baits including bonito, pilchards and slimey mackerel.

Using a squid skirted gang hook rig has been worked well. Spotted mackeral are responding a wide range of slugs around the 30 -40 g mark. Keep an eye out for that bird activity and cast to the edges of the schools of bait, let your slug sink as the bigger fish are often a little deeper. For those fishing the bottom we are seeing some quality trout and sweetlip, angler that are fishing hard to the bottom using a size 10 ball sinkers and 7/0 hooks with fluorocarbon leader are seeing the best results. North reef and the Reefs off Double island have also been fishing extremely well with moses perch, some big hussar, snapper, tuskies, Maori

cod, moses perch, and pearl perch all hitting the decks.

On the beaches; with the reduction in swell and light morning breezes has allowed for better casting distances. Using fresh baits including worm, mullet and yabbies has got angler onto some good fish. For those fishing at night the good evening tides have some quality jewfish taken while using live baits and heaver tackle. For those making the trip across to the Noosa North Shore take the first cutting and head down to the river mouth which has been working well for flathead trevally and whiting.
