VicRoads decided to temporarily reduce the speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h before it was permanently dropped to that limit last November. “It’s a tragedy but that’s the only reason the speed limit has changed. It was City of Casey who jumped on our case as well and supported us,” said Pastor Cayzer who also worked with the Lighthouse Christian College community in successfully lobbying for the speed change. “It is still a road, there are still ongoing safety issues but at least this has decreased the pressure, it’s been very good,” he said. “No matter what speed restriction you have at the front, when you have a drunk un-licenced driver speeding down the road no sign is going to stop him.” Pastor Cayzer said traffic had increased massively as housing developed in the nearby Mayfield estate and Junction Village. “There’s so many cars entering the road. All of those have had numerous accidents over the years.” “It just makes logical sense that it’s 80km/h,” he said. “It’s not only good for us - it’s good for the whole community.”

As with many Pastors, Phil Cayzer is doing whatever he can to help people in need and 2017 was no exception. The pastor at Turning Point church in Cranbourne East was instrumental with his wife Norma, also a pastor in opening Pixel Play Centre and Cafe in Cameron Street, Cranbourne last September. They pair saw an opportunity to connect families as well as Work for the Dole participants in helping with the cafe’s construction. “It’s not only a place for the parents but it’s training for future employees,” Pastor Cayzer said. “We’ve had people come back to us and tell us as a result of working with us they’ve gone on to get full time employment.” He said a number of employees were hired through the DVJS Employment Services program which helped place people with a disability into the general workforce. “A number of them we have employed through the program now we’ve kept on as permanent employees because they’ve come so far,” the Star News 2017 Person of the Year explains. “It really gets me excited to think that we’ve changed somebody’s life. “One came back and said ‘I’ve just put a deposit on my house now.’ That really gets me excited to think that we’ve changed somebody’s life that’s now going to be different for a long time.” By September, Pastor Cayzer recalled his wish coming true after campaigning for seven tireless years for VicRoads to reduce the speed limit outside the school gates of the Lighthouse Christian College in Cranbourne East. But he says it came at a cost when a double fatality struck on the highway in August last year. A mother and daughter were killed on the South Gippsland Highway at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 9 August as they were leaving

Revamp for sport centre The City of Casey has celebrated the official opening of the KM Reedy Reserve Cricket Pavilion renewal following a $750,000 upgrade to the Hampton Park facility. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett unveiled the revitalised sporting pavilion on Sunday 17 December, and said he was proud to see Council deliver a state of the art facility for the community. "Council has been working closely with one of the facility's key user groups, the Heinz Southern Districts Cricket Club, to ensure we deliver exactly what our sporting clubs require. "These recent works have delivered a wonderful facility for the community, which residents can access to enjoy a wide range of sport, recreation and leisure activities." The redevelopment included renewal to current change rooms, additional new amenities and a third change room for away teams and the reconfiguration of existing layout, new public toilets, and a kitchen renewal including new cooking equipment, cabinetry, benches and kitchen storage. Internal and external office storage space as well as a new air conditioning and heating system and glass sliding doors in a communal space were also installed. Cr Ablett said the redevelopment demonstrated Council's commitment to ensuring that all members of the community had access to a variety of sporting and recreational facilities. IN BRIEF Police hunt robber on the run Police are hunting for a bandit following an armed robbery in Cranbourne North on Sunday 7 January. Police were called to a convenience store near the intersection of Elizabeth Street and the South Gippsland Highway about 1.20pm. Investigators have been told a male allegedly threatened the attendant with a hand gun and made demands for cash. The male left in a Mercedes Benz which was involved in a collision with two vehicles on Hallam Road. The car was then dumped on Coral Drive, Hampton Park before the male fled the scene. Police recovered an imitation hand gun from the dumped vehicle. No injuries have been reported to police in either of the incidents. The offender is perceived to be of African appearance, about 163cm tall with a slim build and was believed to be bare foot. Police are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Male takes off with bike Police are searching for a man who allegedly stole a bike at Cranbourne Railway Station on
Wednesday, 4 October 2017. At around 1:30pm a man removed a blue coloured 'Giant' mountain bike from the bike rack located on platform 1 and left with it. Police have released a CCTV image of a man whom they believe may be able to assist in their inquiries. The man is perceived to be Mediterranean in appearance with a skinny build and black, short straight hair. He was wearing a grey coloured 'Adidas' t-shirt, dark coloured shorts, white socks and black runners. If you know something, say something. SE Water fined for sewage spill South East Water (SE Water) will be fined nearly $8000 by Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) after sewage spilled from a faulty pipe joint to a roadside drain on the South Gippsland Highway at Tooradin. SE Water was alerted to the spill by a member of the public on 10 October, but it’s estimated that the spill could have started some 28 days earlier. The spill flowed into the road reserve drain and also impacted three surrounding properties. EPA expects water corporations to be able to quickly identify failures in their networks to ensure sewer spills can be swiftly managed to minimise impacts on local communities and the environment. Once aware of the spill, SE Water immediately contained it, repaired the pipe and undertook a clean-up operation of the drains and affected properties, including the removal of about 1.3 million litres of water from the area. SE Water has also installed two new alarms on the pipeline as a result of the spill to identify any future potential leaks.

Building a safer community in Cranbourne By Brendan Rees Camms Road Shopping Strip in Cranbourne is set to receive a makeover following a funding announcement from the State Government to help cut down on crime. Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera visited Camms Road on Tuesday 19 December, announcing $177,000 in Public Safety Infrastructure Funding which will allow Council to undertake improvements to revitalise the Cranbourne precinct, with Council to also contribute more than $37,000 to the project. Over the next year the space will be redesigned, with new lighting and better signage to be installed to attract more people to the area. There will also be a new footpath and new kerbs installed with upgrades to seating and seating nodes, improved amenities and the replacement of rubbish bins and a bicycle rack. The project has received funding through the latest round of Public Safety Infrastructure Fund

A former Pakenham milk bar owner has been jailed after pleading guilty to 33 charges of sexually assaulting boys in the 1970s and 1980s. Kim Richard Harvey, 63, also lived in Noble Park and Cranbourne while he wrought “havoc” on 15 children, Victorian County Court judge John Smallwood said during sentencing on 20 December. Harvey, married and aged between 20 and 35 during the offending, plied his victims with booze, lollies and pornography. He pressured them, prevailed upon them. On several occasions, the boys woke up to find Harvey molesting them - sometimes after they’d passed out from drinking in Harvey’s home. The charges included three counts of buggery, performed either while the boys were showering or asleep. He breached the trust of parents, often preying on dysfunctional families without a present father figure. Some of the boys complained, but their claims were dismissed by their families at the time. On one occasion Harvey threatened a boy to maintain silence, Judge Smallwood noted. Harvey had been previously convicted in 1975 for similar offending in the Scouts movement. He claimed he had been sexually abused himself in the Scouts. Judge Smallwood observed that it was a “sad tale but true” that often offenders like Harvey had been sexually abused as children. In turn, Harvey’s victims were led to question their own sexuality, were struck by selfdoubt, lost self-worth and suffered depression and relationship troubles. Often a “sexually abused child is never a happy adult”, Judge Smallwood said. Harvey’s plight is now one of isolation. His children and friends had “disowned” him. He’d had no visits while serving 517 days in pre-sentence custody and “the reality is, you most certainly never will,” Judge Smallwood said. The offending was “pre-planned”, “predatory”, spanned between 1974 and 1989, and was motivated by Harvey’s own sexual gratification. It justified a significant prison term, but Judge Smallwood took into account that Harvey may not survive beyond his incarceration. Harvey was ordered to provide a DNA sample, and will be listed on the state’s sexual offenders register for life. He was jailed for 12 years, four months with a minimum non-parole period of eight-and-ahalf years.

Parents are being warned not to leave their children in cars this summer as new statistics reveal Cranbourne rates as one of the top 10 postcodes for ambulance call outs to kids stuck in vehicles. Concerning new data shows Ambulance Victoria responded to 1,696 callouts across Victoria in the year to August, with the vast majority being cases involving toddlers and babies left in cars. On average, four kids a day are being put at risk of serious heat-related injury or death by being left unattended in parked cars. A new State Government campaign, which features AFL legend Matthew Richardson aims to make people aware of the potential dangers of leaving children in hot cars. Kidsafe and Ambulance Victoria will work with the State Government in The Never Leave Kids in Cars campaign to increase awareness and remind parents just how easy it is to underestimate the time it can take to run a quick errand. Childrens' body temperatures rise three to five times faster than an adult's, meaning they are at greater risk of life-threatening heatstroke, dehydration and organ damage when left in the car and will see advertisements run on television, radio and social media. In Victoria, it is against the law to leave children unattended, with offenders facing fines of up to $3900 or jail for six months, or both. Crime statistics featured prominently throughout the Cranbourne News in 2017 but it was in March that the state's official statistics had then Casey Mayor Sam Aziz "heartbroken." "We've lost the battle," Cr Aziz declared in response to Casey's crime rate which had soared during 2016. According to the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA), reported offences in Casey went up 12.5 per cent on a per-capita basis (15 per cent on raw figures). It was higher than the state wide per-capita crime-rate rise of 10.2 per cent. "I was a bit more than surprised by the (latest statistics)," Cr Aziz said at the time. "I was heart-broken. There is very much a human side to these statistics." The data showed there was equivalent to 40 assaults, about 55 burglaries and about 150 thefts a week. In her defence, Police Minister Lisa Neville said police were making more arrests than ever as part of a crime crackdown across the state. In April things did not get better as Casey had been confirmed the home invasion of the capital in Victoria for 2016, when the latest official crime statistics were published. Fast forward to December and incredibly the CSA revealed crime rates in Casey had fallen for the first time in five years. There was massive falls in reported burglaries and break-ins (18 per cent), thefts (17 per cent) and robberies (21 per cent), however crimes-against-the-person continued to rise. Ms Neville said aggravated burglaries – a "high-harm" crime that caused fear in the community – had dropped for the first time. She attributed it to police strategies and tactics and additional police "starting to make an on-going significant downward trend" in crime.

By Brendan Rees The Lighthouse Christian College in Cranbourne East and the wider community were left devastated last August, after a mother and daughter were tragically killed in a car crash outside the school's gates. Teenager Xinyu Yuan, 14 and her mother Ma Li Dai, 44, died on the South Gippsland Highway at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 9 August as they were leaving parent-teacher interviews at the Cranbourne Lighthouse Christian College. Turning Point church, parents and staff at the school organised a petition to change the speed limit in the wake of the tragedy, gathering more than 3600 signatures. VicRoads then decided to reduce the speed limit from 100 km/h to 80km/h on the South Gippsland Highway as a temporary measure on Friday 8 September whilst undertaking a safety review of the scene. The decision came as a great relief to the Casey community with then-Mayor Sam Aziz saying it was "long overdue" and was hopeful that it would mark a change in the safety conditions. By November, the community's feedback was instrumental when VicRoads announced they would permanently reduce the speed limit to 80km/h. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett was relieved VicRoads and the State Government had listened and responded to the community's calls. The man accused of killing Ms Dai and her daughter Xinyu appeared at Melbourne Magistrate's on 24 November.

The inaugural Casey Cardinia Housing Summit was held on World Homeless Day on Tuesday 10 October 2017 after figures revealed City of Casey was ranked second among 15 Melbourne suburbs where rental affordability had plummeted. With more than 140 in attendance, there was a wide variety of speakers who presented at the summit including academic experts and service provider organisations. City of Casey then-Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said the summit was an effective way to come together and hear about issues around housing and homelessness and how organisations could better work together in this space. Figures from the Council for Homeless Persons showed affordable rental houses in Casey plunged from 70 per cent in 2007 to just 13 per cent a decade later. Cranbourne Salvation Army Support Services were struggling to cope with the demand as more people sought their help. Star News also spoke with a resident named Andrew last October who said he became homeless after being made redundant in 2014. At the time, Andrew, who asked not to reveal his surname, said he was living in a rear shed at the Salvation Army Community Support Centre in Cranbourne. WAYYS Cranbourne Executive Officer Leanne Petridis also said the waiting list for public housing in Casey was more than 20 years with those on the priority list waiting up to three years. City of Casey, in partnership with the Shire of Cardinia will discuss hosting the housing summit as an annual event.

Residents of the new Belmond Estate in Clyde were left reeling in March last year as they were caught up in a massively delayed NBN connection. Households were told they would receive satellite phones as they had nearly non-existent mobile phone reception. When residents first started to move into the estate late in 2016, they were told NBN Co would have their phone and internet switched on by 1 December 2016. That date had been continually pushed back with residents told they could expect to have fixed line telecommunications in the estate by 8 May 2017. MP for La Trobe Anthony Byrne worked with households in the estate to help get them connected but said it wasn’t until they protested in the streets that they were heard. He also attributed the delay to construction challenges relating to the 7.8-kilometre fibre haul required for connection. Residents were left feeling bitter after a statement was made by both NBN Co and Telstra that there was no likelihood of them receiving any compensation for their time with no
fixed or mobile services. Representatives from Telstra and NBN Co faced up to a group of about 30 angry Belmond residents in the office of Holt MP Anthony Byrne on the night of Tuesday 14 March. Residents shared their stories of being unable to conduct business or keep in touch with family and friends because of the lack of service throughout the estate during the meeting.

Former Casey mayor Mick Morland’s legacy loomed large, months after his tragic death. There was a 1000-strong gathering to farewell the popular, larger-than-life figure at a funeral service at Berwick Church of Christ. None could believe the esteemed councillor, OAM recipient, Liberal Party member, Rotarian and football clubman’s sudden passing - after being struck by a car on an evening walk in June. Mourning friends, family and colleagues were determined to aptly pay lasting tribute. So the Mick Morland Memorial Grant was created - funded from money donated at the funeral as well as by City of Casey and the Casey-Cardinia Foundation. The grant’s first recipient was Casey Basketball Association to start a wheelchair basketball competition at Casey Stadium. It seemed a perfect project to receive Mick’s blessing, his wife Kay said.
“Mick loved and cared about people,” she said. “He was never happier than when he was helping someone.” That was a common theme in the many tributes that flowed for Mr Morland from family, sport, politics, council and Rotary this year. Reveren Ineke Giles told of Mr Morland’s message to a Narre Warren North Christmas service in 2016. Christmas was about love, Mr Morland said. “It’s about giving someone a hug. “It’s about telling your partner, children, grandchildren and your friends that you love them.” A fanatical Richmond Tigers supporter, Mr Morland’s coffin was draped with a Tigers scarf. It was carried out to the rousing anthem We’re From Tigerland. Who knows what role Mick played in the Tigers’ Grand Final win three months later?

New crossing push By Brendan Rees and Cam Lacadou-Wells A petition with more than 160 signatures from the Lynbrook community has sought a supervised school crossing at a busy highway in Lynbrook. The push comes after a concerned resident witnessed a truck running a red light just as a young girl was about to cross at the South Gippsland Highway and Lynbrook Boulevard intersection. The witness account was posted on the Lynbrook Social Page. "There was a large outcry, and in conjunction with Cr Smith, a petition was started to get a crossing supervisor," said head petitioner and Lynbrook Residents Association president Jason Wood. "There were many posts about trucks constantly running the red turning light at the intersection, and even a few videos of this posted." Mr Wood said one of the residents approached Suez Waste Management and J.J. Richards and Sons. "Both companies were very receptive," he said. "Suez produced a flyer to hand to all trucks going into their facility." He said the push for a crossing may be difficult as the site had to meet VicRoads requirements. "The problem is most parents do not let their children use the crossing due to how dangerous it is. This leads to an excess of cars at the school." Casey Council voted to accept the petition of 164 signatures which was tabled during a council meeting on Tuesday 5 December. Casey Cr Wayne Smith said the intersection was dangerous and trucks from a neighbouring tip had been caught on video going against the lights, and the drivers were subsequently identified by the tip operator.

He added Casey Council successfully lobbied against a dangerous bus route created by State Government and PTV so children didn't have to cross the intersection. He said parents in Lynbrook also wouldn't let their children cross the road because of the risk it posed. Cr Damien Rosario said the intersection was "plagued by problems for a very long time". "There's definitely driver behaviour that needs to change." He said two children died in a "pretty horrific" car crash at the intersection, adding a safety camera at the intersection raised almost a million dollars in one year. Cr Rosario said Casey Council successfully
lobbied VicRoads to brighten the traffic signals and install yellow signs ahead of the intersection. Lynbrook Primary School principal David Payne said the school definitely supported the proposal. "It has been reported to me a couple times over the past five years by motorists that there had been children who had close calls." "We have one thousand children attending here. Tomorrow is not soon enough as far as child safety goes." VicRoads data from 2016 revealed there were four serious injury crashes at the intersection, however none of these incidents involved pedestrians. A report will come back to council in March, 2018.
Hardware giant Bunnings will build a new store in Clyde North in 2019, after snapping up a 3.77-hectare site within developer MAB Corporation’s $150 million Element Park business and retail park. The new 16,600-square-metre DIY warehouse will anchor stage one of MAB Corp’s 38-hectare project, paving the way for a proposed retail centre including showrooms, leisure and food and beverage stores. Bunnings plans to build the new store at the junction of Thompsons and Berwick-Cranbourne roads, Clyde North. Bunnings is the first to be announced in MAB Corporation’s latest 38-hectare business park, paving the way for a proposed retail centre including showrooms, leisure and food and beverage opportunities. The Element Park retail and business park is set to bring an additional 700 permanent jobs to the City of Casey, in addition to 150 construction jobs. Development manager at MAB Corporation Ian Parry said having such a significant retailer join the development was a catalyst for the next phase of the area’s development. “With Element Park, we’re thrilled to be able to service the growing south-east region with amenities, play an active role in job creation and ultimately contributing to the region’s growth.” “Furthermore, we are seeing significant interest with Stage one selling out within two weeks from release and record land sales at Element Park in excess of $300 per metre square. We will soon release new retail and industrial precinct opportunities in the new year,” he said. Infrastructure works at Element Park are set to commence in early 2018, with completion anticipated for early 2019 prior to the completion of the Bunnings Warehouse.

Sweet smell of success By Rebecca Skilton The bright colours and quirky characters adorning the packaging of Wizz Fizz is a sight most Australians are instantly familiar with. However, what they might not know is that the sizzling sherbet is proudly Australian owned and produced locally by Hallam based company Fyna Foods. Wizz Fizz is an Australian confectionary icon whose origins date back 70 years to 1947, when Marjorie and Arthur Campbell begun their home-based jam business. As Fyna Foods current CEO Gillian Powell explained, it was while the Campbell’s were making their jam that Arthur noticed “a bit of a gap” within the confectionary industry that would ultimately alter the face of Australian sweets. “When you’re making jam you’re boiling up fruit at a very high temperature; not unlike how you make lollipops,” Gillian explained. “So Arthur thought, well okay we’re making jam, let’s make lollipops. So they started making lollipops and he decided that the lollipops needed something in them to give them a bit more taste so he developed a recipe for sherbet to put inside the lollipops.” So popular was the sherbet amongst Arthur’s workers, it was suggested that the fizzy powder be bagged and sold separately; ultimately leading to Wizz Fizz’s original products Hoppy Pops and Ring Fizz. “The Hoppy Pops were one of our early products where you had a lollipop that dipped into the sherbet,” Gillian said. “Then there was ring fizz which was a plastic ring with a lolly pop on it and you would drip the ring in the sherbet.” Nowadays, the Fyna Foods name has expanded to include brands such as Superior Liquorice Co, Big Boss Candy sticks, Fads Fun Sticks, Pink Lady Superfine Chocolate, Ballantyne and Australian Bush Friends chocolates. The once back-yard business has grown exponentially, now employing around 88 individuals and another 10 to 20 casuals depending on the time of the year. And while the Fyna Food story begun in Yarra Street Abbotsford in the 1940s, it was later moved to a new facility based in North Fitzroy in the 1970s before finding its current home in Hallam in 2001 where it was “able to accommodate all areas of manufacture under the one roof, storage of raw materials and finished product, research and development, and state of the art manufacturing equipment“. Yet despite its brand additions and facility upgrades, Gillian maintains that Wizz Fizz has continued to claim the title of the biggest seller, with the Hallam factory producing around 50,000 sachets of Wizz Fizz per day, roughly equating to over 15 million packets per year. So what is it that’s made a small pack of sherbet last well over half a century? “I think Terry (Campbell, the current Fyna Foods Chairman) puts it quite well; because it’s a fun, interactive product,” Gillian said. “You eat it off a spoon and whether you tip the spoon upside down, it’s interactive ... there’s nothing else like it.” However, regardless of its longevity, Gillian admitted that Wizz Fizz and co haven’t been without their ups and downs, having faced both a heightened sugar awareness in the community and the challenges brought on by choosing to manufacture products locally. “We don’t advocate anyone eating sugar every day because it’s not good for them,” Gillian said. “But (Wizz Fizz) is a part of fun and it’s a part of parties and we want to be a part of every party and that’s our motto - it’s not a party without Wizz Fizz.” While the company has joined the Be Treatwise campaign, there are no signs of the Wizz Fizz era coming to an end, with Gillian confirming that sales of Wizz Fizz as a brand - including Wizz Fizz Sherbet, Wizz Fizz Cones and the other Wizz Fizz brands - increased by

In the market we’re competing in, there’s a lot of cheap stuff coming in from overseas and so we compete against those - so the
overall challenge is maintaining our sales sufficiently so we can invest in our factory. And that is probably our key challenge in our business - because we want to invest back in our factory and our people. “And Terry and the family, Arthur especially, like employing people,” Gillian explained. “Arthur got great satisfaction out of employing Australians and I know Terry feels very much the same way. Connecting over a cuppa By Brendan Rees A new community cafe in Cranbourne is serving up more ways to connect women, make new friends and have fun. A Women’s Friendship Cafe celebrated its official launch on Wednesday 13 December at St John’s Community Hall in Cranbourne, opening its doors for all women with the motto: “busy women, busy lives, a small conversation can change a whole day”. Women’s Friendship Cafes Community Liaison for Casey and Cardinia Elaine Smith
said the launch proved to be successful with more than 40 women of all ages, cultures and abilities celebrating a “lovely space” to make friends and be themselves. She said women spoke about their personal experiences and hopes for the future. “We are a volunteer activity - women helping women, building a community and supporting each woman to take the next step in her life. “Cranbourne is such a growing place with new families coming each week. “We need to find a way to all come together
and find local friends of all cultures,” she said. “We can become isolated at home, maybe with little children, maybe without a car, maybe we don’t know our neighbours. Women’s Friendship Cafe is a place where we can come to make friends.” Ms Smith said the cafe allowed women to have a sense of belonging and also enjoy activities such as arts, craft and sewing. “It is my deepest wish to see Cranbourne as a place where we feel safe and we can see friends when we pick the kids from school or go to the shops.”
One participant named Margie said: “It is a chance to meet other cultures and feel part of the local life.” The group meets during school terms each Wednesday from 10am until noon at St John’s Community Hall, 27 Childers Street in Cranbourne. Christmas cheer for kids By Brendan Rees The Christmas spirit has spread to Cranbourne after the Aiding Casey Foundation (ACE) got a very welcomed $1000 donation gift. Cranbourne’s Inner Wheel Club was proud to present the cheque at the club’s 25th anniversary at the Blue Hills Retirement Village in Cranbourne on Monday 11 December which was attended by more than 35 people. Cranbourne GP Dr Leon Shapero set up the foundation in 2014 which aims to encourage, support and help educate local teenage students. Dr Shapero said the foundation was grateful to receive the $1000 cheque which would help
visually impaired children with glasses as well as providing them with food. “Certainly we’re very thankful to the Inner Wheel Club for their generous donation,” he said. “The money for the foundation that is raised or donated goes 100 per cent to the children. “They will be used in the next 12 months to assist our program of feeding hungry kids in high schools of Cranbourne, particularly to help the provision of free glasses to kids with visual impairment.” He said the foundation arranged free eye testing for children at schools and clinics. ACE Foundation board member and Casey
councillor Amanda Stapledon said: “This is an amazing achievement by some hard working women who quietly go about helping so many in our community.” Cranbourne’s Inner Wheel Club President Carol Mulvogue said the ACE Foundation was important in helping children. “It’s a worthwhile charity. They need all the help they can get.” The Inner Wheel Club will host a trivia fundraiser evening on Saturday 24 February at the Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne at 7pm. Warriors on the rise By David Nagel Selectors for the West Gippsland Cricket Association have announced a talent laden 28man squad for Melbourne Country Week, to be held from Monday 19 to Friday 23 February this year. The Warriors will compete in division two of the elite country carnival after defeating Warragul in a tense division three grand final at Preston City Oval in early February last year. Chairman of selectors Mick Torney, captain Dom Paynter, and his deputy Aaron Avery presented the squad to country week coordinator Phil Anning just prior to Christmas, with those selected now having until Friday 19 January to advise of their availability. Anning is hopeful that last year’s success will lead to a strong show of support from the players this year. “We understand it’s a huge commitment for the players, but we’re hopeful the opportunity to be part of the possible promotion to division one will entice the cream of the crop to represent the association this year,” Anning said. “There are so many good players in the WGCA, so it’s a tough job for the selectors to the pick the squad, but we’re confident we’ve picked a very good squad with a lot of allround talent. Obviously it would be great to repeat the success of last year, but it’s going to be tough against some pretty stiff opposition.” The Warriors begin their campaign against Bendigo - relegated from the top-tier Provincial division last year - at Yarrambat on February 19, before taking on South West at Ivanhoe and Sunraysia at Greenvale on days two and three respectively. The Warriors form part of the gold section of division two, with Ferntree Gully, Leon-
gatha, Shepparton and Yarra Valley competing in the four-team green section. The top two teams from gold and green will then meet in semi-final action on Thursday, with the two winners to compete in the division two grand final at Plenty Valley on Friday 23. Anning said the squad had the perfect blend of youth and experience, with several criteria leading to selection. All 12 players who represented the association on grand final day last year return, with some youthful talent and some wise heads sure to strengthen the composition of the squad. “We’ve tried to find a balance of being loyal to those who helped us earn promotion last year, and have performed well over the journey, and rewarding players who have been in pretty good form for their clubs,” Anning said. “We’ve picked four players under 21 in Zac Chaplin, Trav Wheller, Mitch Davey and Tyler Clark, but players like Brad Miles and Troy McDermott will bring plenty of experience to the table. Cavaliers add a touch of class By David Nagel The Casey Cavaliers will be confident of bridging the gap on the top four teams in the State Championship Men's Division in 2018 after the recent addition of two key signings. The Cavs - who finished fifth behind Ringwood, Knox, Waverley and Eltham last year have strengthened their roster with the signing of guard Jorden Page and forward Matt Dolan. Page comes to the club after a successful time in the collegiate system playing NCAA Division 1 for St Mary's. The 27-year-old will also bring a wealth of experience from his time in the Queensland (QBL) and South East Australian (SEABL) Basketball Leagues. Donlan has also seen a successful time in the collegiate system playing NCAA Division 1 for Youngstown State University, where he was a major contributor in his senior year playing off in the March Madness tournament. After a short stint playing in the LEB Gold League in Spain for Huesca, Dolan has decided to return to Victoria to continue his basketball career with the Casey Cavaliers and contribute to the team's success. Both Page and Dolan are also committed to
contributing to the club off the court, helping to develop basketball in the community and within the region. The pair will also contribute to the Cavs constantly evolving and expanding junior program. The two additions will complement the core group of returning players, including 2017 imports, Brandon Polk and Raheem Lemons, who both return in 2018. The signings of Page and Dolan follow on from some encouraging news from the Cavs' Women, who gained the signatures of division-one stars Tanarly Hood and Billie Lucas just prior to Christmas. Hood is coming off the back of a stellar season with Latrobe City Energy, winning the league MVP and being named in the All-Star 5. Hood averaged 22 points and eight rebounds with the Energy and shot at 40 percent from the field. Lucas brings a successful culture to the Cavs after helping the Chelsea Gulls take out the Division One Women's Championship last year. She averaged 18 points and eight rebounds per game after being named in the All-Star 5 in 2016. The Cavs will look to bounce back strongly from a poor 2017 where they won four games to finish in bottom place on the ladder.

Heat cancels the cricket By Nick Creely
League MVP Tanarly Hood has been a massive signing for the Cavs in the off season.
Extreme heat across Victoria on Saturday forced the return of local cricket after the Christmas break to be abandoned. With the temperatures soaring over 40 degrees in some parts of the state, local competitions such as the West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA), Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA), Warragul District Cricket Association (WDCA) and the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) all implemented their heat policies. According to section 2.1.1 of the WGCA’s Local Laws, “At 11am on match day, should the Melbourne forecast as released by the Bureau of Meteorology be 40 degrees or more, then all senior games for that day shall be abandoned.” All games scheduled for Saturday were deemed a draw, with each team awarded six points each. However, on Sunday, Kooweerup and Clyde played off in the Premier Division, while Devon Meadows and Cranbourne Meadows did battle in the District Division. These matches were not impacted as a result of the heat policy on Saturday. The DDCA took a slightly different tact, with the games postponed until either Sunday January 21 or Sunday 28 January, depending on ground availability. The association decided to delay the decision until Saturday morning, in hope that the maximum temperature of 42 degrees might be late enough for matches to conclude, with the majority of turf games pushed back by two hours, while all synthetic competitions within the DDCA were called off in Friday in anticipation of the heat. Instead of commencing play and waiting to see whether the temperature hits 40, the DDCA decided to reschedule rather than start matches that would not have reached a result if play had started. Temperatures soared to as high as 44.5 at Hopetoun in the North West, while Melbourne reached almost 42 degrees, making it the hottest day since 13 January, 2016. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Ruthless Demons on top By David Nagel An opportunistic Kooweerup (1/186) has extended its lead at the top of the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division with a crushing nine-wicket victory over Clyde (8/184) at Lineham Oval on Sunday. With Saturday's portion of round nine cancelled due to oppressive heat - and six points awarded to the idle teams for a draw - the Demons and Cougars squared off for the only 12 points up for grabs for the weekend. And for the second time in four days the Demons were absolute clinical. Backing up an impressive run-chase against Pakenham in the Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup on Thursday night, the reigning premier's toporder was once again on fire. Captain-coach Mark Cooper (72 not out) and champion opener Chris O'Hara (58) - who compiled a 117-run stand against the Lions in the shortest form of the game - were up to their old tricks, with a 134-run partnership that made a difficult chase look easy. Cooper has now made 378 runs at the imperious average of 126 and looks set for one of the great seasons of an already glittering career. Chris Bright (28 not out) joined forces with his skipper to complete the job at hand with nine wickets and 29 balls left in the tank. After an impressive start to the season the Cougars have now lost five on the trot and have failed to make a mark against the best teams in the competition. Who’ll maintain the rage? By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - THE SEASON SO FAR There are still so many burning questions ahead of the second half of the Dandenong District's Turf 1 season, with up to seven teams well and truly in the hunt for premiership glory. A case can be made that Springvale South and Buckley Ridges lead this well clogged up race, while the might of last year's premiers, Mordialloc, remain a constant threat, while Berwick possess a glittering list that is capable of tearing anyone apart. But then there is surprise packet St Mary's, who have come up from Turf 2 and made a splash. After defeating Cranbourne and Dandenong West in the early stages of the season, the Saints finished the year on a high by defeating Berwick and Dingley just before the Christmas break. Also of particular interest are the positions of Heinz Southern Districts and Hallam, both waiting to pounce on any slip up from the current top four from here on in. It's a tight race to the top, and this weekend provides another golden opportunity to cement their standings or perhaps make a statement to the competition. But just who has the steel to maintain the rage for the entire season? It's also likely to be a close count for the Alan Wookey Medal as the champion player of Turf 1, with the likes of Daniel Watson (Buckley Ridges), Leigh Booth (Hallam Kalora Park), reigning winner Steven Spoljaric (Springvale South), James Wilcock (Berwick), Dinuk Hettiarchchi (Dingley) and Michael Davies (HSD) all displaying phenomenal consistency for their respective sides.
