By Derek Schlennstedt If there is one organisation that represents the resilience and community spirit synonymous with the Dandenong Ranges, it's the Upwey-Belgrave RSL Sub-branch.

Earlier this year the community branch- affectionately known as the 'heart of the hills' looked to be on the brink of collapse after falling victim to substantial thefts.

Though their survival and capacity to flourish in the face of overwhelming odds is why UpweyBelgrave RSL and all their supporters have been named in the Mail's 2017 Issue of the Year.

Faced with the dire reality of closure, the Mail reported in January 2017 on the plight of the Upwey-Belgrave RSL, when it was found that Marion Mills, a previous Treasurer at the RSL had stolen a substantial amount of money from the organisation.

Over an almost three-year period - from 26 November 2010 to 5 August 2013 - Mills made 80 fraudulent payments totalling $28,918.

Though a News Corp report suggested the RSL was left in the red to a figure of around $400,000 after Mills failed to pay bills or staff superannuation.

With thousands of dollars lost, the Mail reported in April that the RSL Sub-branch had made an announcement confirming that they would continue on until at least the end of 2017, though their future looked dubious. Instead of giving up and shutting the doors or succumbing to the appeal of poker machines, members of the committee of management called on the community to join their fight for survival.

"This is not your average RSL; it's also a community and social hub," Ms Ashton said.

"There's a sign near the door which reads, 'You enter a stranger but once', and it's true.

"The patrons know the staff by name, and often vice-versa, and being a member here is like belonging to a big extended family."

On April 24, 2017 The Mail reported that Marion Mills pleaded guilty to obtaining financial advantage by deception and was sentenced to four months in jail, wholly suspended for two years - Mills was also ordered to pay back the stolen funds back at $50 per week Despite its hardships over the past year and a difficult start to the year, the RSL remains an enduring part of the Dandenong Ranges, much

thanks to its support from the community surrounding the Dandenong ranges.

Every year its importance in the Dandenong Ranges as a welcoming hub for residents and returned servicemen alike is shown by the thousands who turn out to its Anzac Day service.

Those thousands also rallied in support of the RSL and were crucial in ensuring that it remains an enduring presence in the Dandenong Ranges.

Though President David Eaton said the RSL is not out of the woods yet the fight is far from over and he said they would continue to fight to ensure the RSL remains a pokie-free branch and ensure that it retains that welcoming atmosphere which has earned the RSL its place as 'the heart of the hills".

And join the fight they did, with RSL member Annie Ashton, acknowledging the immense support of the surrounding community who rallied to retain what patrons acknowledge as the 'heart of the hills'.

Spurred on also by a rejuvenated bistro - as well as assistance from local politicians and the Healesville RSL Sub-branch - the Dandenong Ranges community threw its weight behind the popular icon.

On Sunday 6 August when the Sub-branch held a special event that called on the community for support the Mail spoke to RSL member Annie Ashton who said visitors turned out in record numbers with many signing up for membership on the day.

'Ticket or tow' zone

IN BRIEF Cars hit by rocks Emerald Police are appealing for information in relation to a series of incidents where rocks were thrown at cars near the Puffing Billy Railway crossing in Emerald along Belgrave-Gembrook road.

Police report that they have been called to over a dozen incidents where rocks thrown from offenders have caused 'thousands of dollars' worth of damage to vehicles driving along Belgrave-Gembrook road.

The incidents usually take place early in the morning around 2am on the weekend.

It is believed offenders are picking up sizeable rocks from the Puffing Billy tracks which they are then throwing at cars driving along Belgrave-Gembrook Road.

Police are urging anyone who experiences a similar incident in the vicinity of Emerald to immediately contact triple 000 so they can respond.

Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity near the location or has any information relating to the incidents is urged to contact Emerald Police on 5954 0200 or ring Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00

By Derek Schlennstedt Over the Christmas holidays - and much to the disbelief of many locals - a ticketing machine has mysteriously arisen in the township of Olinda.

For $2 per hour, you can park in the spaces provided in the car park located off Parsons Lane, behind Pie in the Sky. The Mail spoke to local residents Margaret who said she was concerned that this may be the start of something more.

“It was a bit of a shock to find it there,” said Margaret, who has lived in Olinda for 18 years.

“It does make you wonder where it is all going to end,” she said.

“Up until now everyone has put their signs out to say Mangana parking only or Cafe Olinda parking only, but now it’s getting serious and someone has put up a ticket machine.”

According to Yarra Ranges Council the paid parking meter in Olinda is owned and operated by private business owners and an estate agent for one of the private landowners said that there were two landowners involved in the machines construction and implementation.

Though, the estate agent assured The Mail that the ticket machine is only part of a threemonth trial which has only been constructed as a result of people using the car spaces and going on bushwalks or leisure activities for the entire day rather than visiting the shops.

Yarra Ranges Council said that as it is a private owner car park it is also the responsibility of the owner to enforce the parking restrictions as council officers will not.

“Council officers do not patrol this private car park to enforce parking restrictions,” Acting Director of Environment and Engineering, Elissa Blake said.

“When parking in a private car park that is appropriately signed, a motorist enters into a contract with the operator.”

Police car rammed

Over the Christmas holidays a ticket machines has been constructed in an Olinda car park.

Current restrictions on the parking lot include a sign which details that the car park has three hour parking between the times of 7am and 7pm and is also a ‘Tow Away Zone’.

Though the parking meter has created heated discussion, it is also part of a wider discussion regarding parking problems within the popular tourist town.

Resident Margaret said that on weekends it

almost becomes impossible for locals to venture into town or to even get off the mountain.

“On a Sunday there are thousands of people here, and they drive around and then drive off because they can’t get a park ... it’s difficult getting out of our own town to get off the mountain,” Jan said.

“It’s extremely concerning on a high fire danger day.”

Welcome Christmas gift for Emerald SES

By Derek Schlennstedt After years of attending incidents in a 15-yearold storm truck that offered only the bare essentials in safety, Emerald SES finally received a Christmas gift from Santa that will help improve their capacity to assist the community in times of need.

That Christmas gift came in the shiny new form of a Mercedes Benz storm truck dubbed 'Emerald storm 1' which will replace the previous and out-dated model.

Officially one of the hardest-working SES teams in Victoria, the Emerald unit ranked first in the state in 2016 for attending call-outs for assistance.

Emerald SES Controller, Ben Owen said the new truck would help immensely in their ability to respond to call-outs and offered a variety of modifications which would help in getting to incidents and providing support.

"Being a truck that is brand new and not

15-years-old it has a lot of better technology and safety features, which we never had on our previous truck," Mr Owen said.

"It comes with ABS brakes, anti-skid, all the modern safety features including airbags … we now have an on-board power system which can help to set up scene lighting and within a minute of getting to an incident we can light up the entire area."

"It's definitely a faster responding vehicle so in those times of need we can be there."

Previously the unit was attending scenes in a 15-year-old truck that had very little in the way of safety features.

The AWD Mercedes Sprinter was partially funded by the State Labor Government who provided $100,000; though Emerald SES unit has also spent several years funding the other $100,000 through community fundraising events.

"We've been raising money for three or four years now," Mr Owen said.

A 55-year-old man has been charged following an incident in Kilsyth overnight on 7 January.

Police attended Regina Street, Kilsyth following complaints of an alleged fight around 10pm.

Police allege that a male rammed a police car and drove at members before confronting police with a machete.

The man was sprayed with pepper spray before being arrested and no police members were physically injured in the alleged assault.

Maroondah Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged the Kilsyth man with 13 offences including conduct endangering life, two times assault police, possessing a controlled weapon and theft of motor vehicle.

New scam involves 'Centrelink'

The SES unit at Emerald was clearly on their best behaviour last year with Santa delivering a new Storm truck for them to attend incident with. of the community without which it would have been impossible to obtain the truck.

"The community support has been tremendous and we would all like to thank those people along the line who have bought a snag, or left a donation note - it all comes back to getting this equipment on the road so we can assist our community when needed."

In the past week Belgrave Police have received three complaints from elderly residents in relation to a scam involving "Centrelink".

On three separate occasions callers have rang residents stating they are from "Centrelink" when they have no affiliation whatsoever with Centrelink.

Police report that they then manage to coax and persuade the person that they owe Centrelink money and if they don't pay they will be arrested.

The callers manage to talk the person into going and buying Apple ITunes vouchers sometimes to the value of $400 each.

They are given instructions to call them back after they have obtained the ITunes voucher and to pass on the code on the back of the voucher to the "Centrelink" caller.

Belgrave Police urge residents to contact with, parents, grandparents and neighbour or anyone elderly that these calls are Con-Artists.

2017 - THE YEAR THAT WAS Belgrave Hub on track for 2018 opening.

Twenty one months since the sod turning and construction is progressing well at the Belgrave Community Hub site in time for the expected completion by mid-2018.

In March 2017 Yarra Ranges Council reported they would enter into a lease agreement with Inspiro over the to-be-constructed Belgrave Community Hub facility which will provide essential community health services to the region and help respond to a high demand for allied health, family and children services, and dental services.

At its 28 February meeting, council unanimously supported the move, which set in stone a 10-year joint agreement, with options for four further 10-year terms.

The $9.673m hub will provide purpose built accommodation for visiting specialist services such as mental health, public dental services and services for people experiencing family violence.

Burnham Beeches heats up.

The decision by celebrity chef and developer Shannon Bennett’s to develop the historic Burnham Beeches site continues to create controversy within the Dandenong Ranges Community throughout 2017.

At the forefront of that controversy was the proposal to remove 13 of the 22 beech trees that comprise the Avenue of Beeches in Sherbrooke as well as an incident involving helicopters landing at the location without any permits.

An independent planning panel meeting held in December covered many of the residents concerns ranging from safety in the event of a bushfire, and inadequate response to heritage values, traffic and parking, environmental and landscape impacts, excessive scale and inadequate application information.

The owners of the Sherbrooke site, celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and business partner Adam Garrison, are seeking to significantly redevelop the site, including the restoration of the Norris Building.

The 30-year-old’s multi-sporting career has seen her travel from her roots in Mount Evelyn, to the country town of Yea, to across the globe in Ireland, before bringing it back full circle to play AFL for Collingwood in the AFL Women’s League where she will return to play for in 2018.

The Independent panel meeting gave the opportunity for both sides to put forward there position to the panel, and will prepare their recommendations in early 2018.

Blue building is no more.

The iconic Upper Ferntree Gully Visitor Information Centre dubbed the ‘blue building’ closed its doors in June 2017 after Yarra Ranges Tourism announced the decision following a decrease in visitors.

Following a detailed review of the ongoing viability of the centres, Yarra Ranges Tourism determined a significant decline in the number of visitor inquiries and a rise in online bookings by visitors to the Dandenong Ranges had driven the decision to cease operations at the Upper Ferntree Gully Information Centre.

Having been vacated by volunteers as well as Dandenong Ranges Taxi service who had been a subtenant at the site, there still remains

Puffing Billy puffs into the future.

The popular Puffing Billy railway is steaming into 2018 after the Andrews Labor Government announced a funding boost of $8.2 million on 10 November, 2017.

Puffing Billy Railway Station announced that the funding boost will be used to improve facilities and create a new discovery centre at Lakeside Station that will be utilised as an allweather venue and give a significant lift in visitor experience. Just as importantly, it will be a kick-off point for the second half of the railway.

Construction on the discovery centre is expected to commence before the end of 2018 and be completed by late 2020.

2017 - THE YEAR THAT WAS

Hundreds of residents around the Dandenong Ranges dressed up in their spookiest costumes for the very first Halloween on the Green which was held on 28 October 2017, at the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve.

The Mail attended the Belgrave Lantern Festival in June where thousands of residents from the Dandenong Ranges took to the streets of Belgrave with their homemade lanterns.

In August The Mail spoke to Axel Axelrad, a 97-year-old Olinda resident, who created arguably the most infamous Puppet in Australia, Ossie Ostrich.

Veteran Walling Ward councillor Len Cox was chosen to lead Yarra Ranges Council as mayor for 2018 after he was elected to the position on Tuesday 14 November 2017. Cr Tony Stevenson was elected to take on the duties of deputy mayor.

Senior power lifter Robert Frost 68 from Monbulk went to Tasmania to compete in his second Masters Games.

2017 marked an end to the iconic Ferntree Gully Information Centre.

Sadly in September 2017 a farmer in The Patch lost 22 of his 36 sheep after dogs attacked his flock.

Construction is progressing well at the Belgrave Community Hub site, in time for the expected completion by mid 2018.

What is something people don't know about you?

I'm an avid fan of Star Trek, I love it. I like the originals but to some degree all the others ones are good too.

What would your final meal be?

I like my food but I would say a nice bowl of cherries and raspberries.

What has been your most memorable moment?

"Probably the birth of all three children, they've been around for some time now and they're still my three best friends."

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

I'd like to see the day when all our left over bushland is preserved into national park so that future generations will be able to see the countryside as some of us older people saw it in the past. Younger generations born today need to be able to see Australia the way it was many years ago, because it is disappearing more and more.

What book are you reading, or the last book you read?

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson; I learnt a lot from that book.

What four guests, past or present, would you invite to a dinner party?

Kevin Rudd, Rupert Hamer, Bob Brown and Nelson Mandela, What is your favourite television show?

Star trek of course.

What are you looking forward to in 2018?

I've been councillor some time now and my great strong burning interest in local government is to try and keep our environment intact, and keep it looking as good as possible and so that's a very strong interest for me.

We've got a good council and that makes it a lot easier for a mayor and I'm looking forward to working with them and helping the people in our municipality.

Primary gold Silvan Primary School was recently presented with a gold certificate after winning the Platypus Education Group Elastic Band Challenge, preventing plastic from ending up in our waterways.

The school managed to collect the most elastic plastic bands from car parks, playgrounds and around the home to protect the platypus who often end up entangled in them and don't survive.

About 600 school students took part in the challenge from 10 participating Yarra Ranges schools.

Deputy Mayor and Chandler Ward Councillor Tony Stevenson said the students had collected 1,885 bands which averages out to 47 bands per student.

"We are very proud of the efforts of these students to protect the platypus, a much-loved Australian icon, and our environment," Cr Stevenson said.

"This generation of budding conservationists are certainly leading by example."The Platypus Education Group program is supported by Yarra Ranges Council's Community Development Grants program.

What is your top priority at the moment?

I'm looking forward to continuing all the major jobs that council has on at the moment, there are some really quite good ones at the

moment and I'm looking forward to council continuing to work closely with each other and our residents so that we continue to talk to and help them at all times.

By Derek Schlennstedt A couple from Kilsyth celebrated New Year's in a different fashion as they welcomed in the first child to be born at the Angliss Hospital in Ferntree Gully just 40 minutes after New Year's.

Kirri Mort and Dean Hunter, of Kilsyth welcomed in Charlie, their first child at 12:40am on January 1.

The little bundle of joy had impeccable tim-

ing and was born precisely on the day he was expected, weighing a healthy 3.8kgs.

"His due date was 31 December, so when I started thinking I was in labour; 'I thought surely not, babies don't come on their due date,'" Kirri said.

"He pushed over into 40 minutes the next day."

The couple admitted that they were quite chuffed when they heard that Charlie was the

Kirri said she was delighted to have Charlie on New Year's and said she wouldn't have wanted to spend it any other way.

"It was certainly different to most New Year's; it was good though and was such a special way to bring in the New Year," she said.

Residents of the Dandenong Ranges will have noticed the new traffic lights installed at the intersection of Rutherford Rd and Burwood Hwy. The newest addition means there are now three traffic lights on Burwood Hwy between Glenfern Rd and McNicol Rd and some residents are concerned that it may exacerbate traffic flow leading to Tecoma.

Though VicRoads has assured locals that the new lights are only there to be used by Ambulance Victoria who are stationed along Rutherford Rd. "The new set of lights will only be activated in emergencies, allowing ambulances to turn onto Burwood Highway as quickly and safely as possible," VicRoads Director Operations of Metro South East Michael Barker said.

"VicRoads has worked closely with Ambulance Victoria and the Yarra Ranges Council to determine the most appropriate location for these new lights."

In December 2016 council passed a motion for Ambulance Victoria to build a station at 5 Rutherford Road, Tecoma with the proposal aiming to deliver optimal ambulance response times and modern facilities for paramedics and staff.

The proposal also included construction of a single-storey building, a new 3.5m wide accessway, a second driveway and eight car spaces.

Since then VicRoads has approved the installation of traffic lights on Burwood Highway and reiterated that the lights will only be activated when an ambulance needs to turn onto Burwood Hwy to provide safe and efficient access.

While not yet operational the traffic signals are expected to be turned-on in early 2018.

Once they are turned on signals will remain green unless triggered by an ambulance.

Scrap wood sounds good

By Derek Schlennstedt An outer east guitar manufacturer has utilised sycamore trees from along Monbulk Rd Kallista - which were originally cut down by Council to build sonorous and unique acoustic guitars.

Yarra Ranges Council removed the trees last year as part of bushfire mitigation works to ensure access to roads during an emergency and to protect biodiversity by reducing weed invasion threats caused by the sycamore’s winged seeds.

Council contributed $90,000 to removing the sycamore trees from Monbulk Road after receiving funding through the National Bushfire Mitigation Program.

Though, around 20 of the sycamores received a new lease on life when guitar builder Karl Krauss recycled the wood to create his guitars.

Mr Krauss, who creates guitars at Bayswater, reclaimed the sycamore trees that would otherwise have been chipped on site.

He then aired and dried the wood for six months to create stunning Cole Clark guitars with the very first guitar sold within just 12 hours after completion.

Mr Krauss, who contacted Council after reading a news article about the tree removal, said sycamores were traditionally used for cellos and violins, though could also be utilised in guitars.

“Different combinations of wood make different sounds,” Mr Krauss said.

“Sycamore wood sounds like something between Queensland maple and local Blackwood.

“The sycamores from Kallista were about 500 to 600mm in diameter so the trunks were quite big.”

Making a guitar takes up to three weeks from time the wood has dried, to the components being cut, joined, bent and internal bracing installed.

“We have 28 people here creating the guitars here at Bayswater, it’s quite a production line,” Mr Krauss said.

“We offer to remove trees from private

properties from gullies and all sorts of places.”

The tree removal was part of a fire mitigation program as sycamores are known for shutting out the undergrowth meaning the growth of native species is supressed and eventually lost.

Council’s Bushland team partnered with

VicRoads, Parks Victoria and the Community Weed Alliance for the Dandenongs to deliver the project.

By removing the tree native plants are able to re-establish themselves, providing habitats for local birds and mammals.

Chainsaw in hand for art

By Derek Schlennstedt SkyHigh Mount Dandenong is once again gearing up to host the annual Australian Chainsaw Carving Championships, from 16 to 21 January 2018.

Now in its fifth year, the event showcases the immense talent from 10 of the world's finest wood carvers, with both male and female entrants from Australia, Canada, USA, and Japan competing in this year's competition.

Crowds come from across the country to see the astonishing display of artistic prowess as the carvers wield their chainsaws to turn a log into an amazing work of art.

This year's theme is 'The Garden' and the entrants have 5 days in which to carefully hone their sculpture using three different saws provided by event sponsor STIHL. On the sixth and final day of the event, the carvers spend the morning speed carving, after which the winners of the competition are announced.

Last year's winner Rob Bast, a self-taught carver from Wandin in Victoria's Yarra Valley, competes all over the world and was looking forward to carving locally at SkyHigh as well as pitting his talent against the toughest competition the championship has ever seen.

"It's always really good fun and good to catch up with the local crew," he said.

"It's the only really competition we have in Australia, and this year there's people coming from all over the world … there's more people every year, which is al-

ways great for the competition."

Taking place over five days carvers will spend seven hours every day preparing their masterpiece.

On the final day of the event, they will spend the morning speed carving, after which the winners of the competition will be announced.

Handling a Stihl chainsaw, Rob will spend around 35 hours carving his masterpiece from a large Cyprus or Cedar tree.

Though the carvers are able to prepare designs and finalise types of wood, Rob said circumstances can always change and last year he was forced to change his design at the last minute.

“We try to get everything set up as possible, though I had a design last year, and then it changed and I only finalised it before the competition.”

Despite this Rob still went on to win the 2017 competition after he recreated the infamous ‘over the edge scene’ in ‘Man from Snowy River’ immortalising it in wood.

The carvers all compete for cash prizes on the day, but their sculptures will also be available for purchase at the conclusion of the event on Saturday 20 January 2018.

Reserve named for Jeanne

By Kath Gannaway "A 20 hectare piece of prime bushland in Macclesfield has been dedicated to the life's work, and the memory, of Healesville wildlife champion, the late Jeanne Wilcox.

The land, purchased with funds raised by the Judith Eardley Save Wildlife Association (JESWA) where Jeanne had volunteered for 15 years, will provide additional habitat for the critically endangered Helmeted Honeyeater.

Members of Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FoHHE), Parks Victoria and DELWP, joined JESWA volunteers and members of Jeanne's family on 7 December, 2017, to celebrate the purchase of the land and to formally dedicate the land as the Jeanne Wilcox Reserve.

In what was described by FoHHE president Bob Anderson as one of the quickest land sales in conservation history "no governments involved" he quipped, he thanked the family of the late Willy Veit who had owned and cared for 'Bilagal' for the past 20 years.

The rare piece of bushland came up for sale as part of Mr Veit's estate and the family were thrilled to be able to keep its conservation status.

Mr Veit's daughter Tania Kirby said her father was a passionate farmer and conservationist.

"He was heavily involved in landcare and spent quite a bit of time here keeping weeds out and keeping it in pristine condition.

"He was always just happy to keep it for conservation and to have this kept as a reserve ... well, he would be as pleased as punch," she said.

"The whole family is very happy with this outcome."

JESWA chair and friend and colleague of Jeanne, Peter Hannaford, said everyone at the Wildlife Centre was grateful that the land to be known as the Jeanne Wilcox Reserve was to be part of the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve.

"The reserve will commemorate Jeanne's wonderful work for the environment and wildlife," he said.

"We are a small number of volunteers who have grown older not old together," he said, adding that the volunteers were links in the chain that had seen a business supporting wildlife flourish.

He paid tribute to Jeanne saying she was the 'heart and soul' of the centre who made it a special place.

She was also an astute business woman and tireless worker.

"Throughout her 15 years and 40-hour weeks at the shop Jeanne made more than enough money to single-handedly pay for the reserve that appropriately bears her name," he said.

Jeanne's son Danny, on behalf of the family, said his mother would be honoured if a little miffed at all the fuss!

"Really, mum would love it," he said.

"She always wanted to live in the bush, and that's where she is now we'll always have a place where we can come and see her."

Platypus populations are suffering because of the use of opera house nets.

Push to protect platypus Setting 'opera house' nets to catch yabbies is not only inhumane, it may be illegal, with hefty penalties attached.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is urging the public not to use opera house nets in Victorian public waters these Summer holidays after 13 platypus deaths this year from drowning in illegally set opera house nets in Victoria.

DELWP Senior Wildlife Investigator, Mike Sverns platypus are an iconic Australian species that are declining.

"To lose 13 platypus in one year is tragic," Mr Sverns said.

He said it is illegal to use opera house nets in, or near Victorian public waters.

"These nets trap and prevent air breathing animals such as platypus, rakali (water rats), freshwater turtles and aquatic birds from escaping."

"This summer holidays we are encourag-

ing Victorians not to use enclosed yabby traps such as opera house nets and only use platypus safe alternatives such as the hoop or open top lift nets."

As an incentive to report the illegal use of opera house nets the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA Australia) is offering a $5000 reward for information leading to the identification and conviction of anyone involved in the drowning death of a platypus with an enclosed yabby trap.

Under the Wildlife Act 1975 there are various penalties associated with taking or being in possession of protected wildlife or using prohibited equipment with maximum penalties of more than $38, 000 and/or 24 months imprisonment.

Kids on tour at Burrinja

By Derek Schlennstedt Take part in a range of free activities at Burrinja as part of their holiday program and discover the fun of contemporary art and design.

This summer, enjoy Burrinja's annual NGV Kids on Tour activities that feature for all of January.

Shapes in Space is one of those activities and features a multi-functional activity that allows children to explore modalities of creativity.

The activity provides a space for children to engage with objects and people in responsive and creative ways.

Aptly named Shapes in Space the props are tactile and multi-sensory allowing children and people of all ages and abilities and levels of mobility to engage with the activity.

The activity area also responds to the climate change biennale by exposing children to the possibilities of creativity without outcome - exploring the ephemeral.

The activity has no set outcome allowing for conversation around objects and possessions and issues surrounding waste and consumption.

By creating an activity where children can explore creativity without creating a drawing, painting, college or other document and without documentation the child will be encouraged to use their own imagination to create shapes in space.

Cars catalyst for catch-up

By Kath Gannaway Now in its ninth year, The Wandin Custom Car and Bike Show has established a reputation not only as an outstanding display of vehicles, but as a popular mid-week get-together for friends and families.

The Rotary Club of Wandin, supported by numerous local motoring businesses, the Wandin Bendigo Community Bank and other community organisations, runs the monthly show from October through to March.

All roads lead to the Wandin East Recreation Reserve on the third Wednesday of each month as hundreds of pre-1985 cars and multi-generational bikes file through the gates and make their way onto the showground.

Owners and enthusiasts mingle with those who have a more casual appreciation of the eclectic collection of horsepower, chrome and glossy paint jobs.

Starting at 6pm and running through to 9pm, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with the local CFA providing a barbeque and wood-fired pizza and refreshments also on offer.

The entry fee for cars and bikes if $5 with gold coin entry for patrons.

The event supports the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal and local community organisations.

The 2018 show dates are January 18, February 15 and March 15.

Cream of junior cricketers With extreme weather extending the break for senior cricketers across the Yarra Valley, the cream of the Valley's junior crop take centre stage for their upcoming representative carnivals.

Annually during the summer school holidays, Melbourne's most talented junior cricketers pit their skills in the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union (VMCU) representative carnivals.

The YVCA has a proud history in the competition playing in many finals and taking out multiple titles. This year's competition involves a series of preliminary matches which act as qualifying for a knockout finals series.

The best of the Valley have been put through their paces with a series of training/ selection sessions, plus a series of Region 8 games against Ferntree Gully, West Gippsland and Mornington Penisula Cricket Associations rounded out a solid preparation for the competition.

After some nervous moments, the teams were selected, and caps presented, at a formal presentation at Coldstream Cricket Club before the Christmas break.

The Under 12 Girls have already completed their qualifying games in the Claudia Fantone Shield finishing in tenth position.

With many of the girls just beginning their cricketing journeys, they found the competition tough, but the learning experience enjoyable. The team consisted of Briana Parker (Launching Place), Natasha Vassallo (Gruyere), Ameilia Kuth (Launching Place), Pearl Saurine (Warburton-Millgrove), Holly Robins (Mt Evelyn), Ella Amore (Launching Place), Eliza Owen (Launching Place), Alisha Beers (Gruyere) and Samara Kuth (Launching Place). Caitlin Parker of Launching Place gave the girls great guidance as coach of the team. With girls' cricket going through dramatic growth, the future of this team looks bright.

The Under 12 and 14 Boys teams kick off their campaigns on Monday, and their competition consists of five qualifying games, plus finals across two weeks. Competing in the Josh Browne Plate, the Under 12 team will be coached by Stuart Parker (Launching Place) and Chris Handasyde (Healesville) with the team represented by Baylin Spencer (Woori Yallock), Billy Thurlow (Hoddles Creek), Cody Anderson (Healesville), Dan Potter (Mt Evelyn), David Carvill (Launching Place), Dylan Walker (Warburton-Millgrove), Harvey Smith (Seville), Hudson Semple-Hetherton (Warburton-Millgrove), John Thurlow (Hoddles Creek), Joshua Handasyde (Healesville), Lucas Parker (Launching Place), Luke Pearse (Yarra Glen), Raph Lever (Healesville), Riley Cameron (Healesville) and Ryan Thompson (Warburton-Millgrove). With their home games based at Queen's Park, Healesville, the team are looking for a big two weeks of competition. Training and selection will begin shortly with the hierarchy keen to consolidate their position in Division 2 of the competition after finding it tough going in last year's competition.
