but more importantly presented a business case they believe was viable and garnered a commitment from the Warburton/Yarra Junction Bendigo Community Bank to kick in $100,000 for equipment should the facility stay open.

Before the year was out, AdventCare announced they would redevelop the facility and left no doubt that this was an outcome driven and made possible by local people.

In October 2017 the first stage, 19 fully compliant resident rooms with ensuites, a new lounge and courtyard and a general upgrade was opened - and residents could hardly wait to move in.

to turn around a decision by the Victorian SDA AdventCare Board in August 2016 to close the facility with just a few weeks notice.

Closure seemed inevitable ... until the people of Warburton just said 'no' and vowed to find a way.

The community rallied and Save Warburton Aged-Care Group (SWAG) set to work to convince AdventCare that as a community they could make it work.

While SWAG chairperson Peta Godenzi urged the group to be positive, she warned AdventCare that the problem would not go away ... and as a community, they kept that promise.

They gathered 1800 signatures on a petition,

2017 was the year that 'People Power' paid off.

In Warburton and in Healesville, community members reaped the benefits of actively railing against the threatened loss of vital services, and came out in force to inspire a better future.

The opening of the 'new' Healesville Hospital in February and the opening of the first stage of the AdventCare Aged Care Facility in October came about only through people standing up in numbers and refusing to accept that 'others' know better the needs of their own communities.

The Healesville Hospital campaign started with a firey meeting in November 2012 attended by 30 people and quickly gathered momentum to a ground-swell public meeting that saw The Memo Hall packed with more than 280 people just weeks before Christmas.

That meeting resulted in the formation of SHHAG - Save Healesville Hospital Action Group, a voice for the Yarra Valley's health needs and the backbone of a hard-fought and long campaign.

The group raised $80,000 for a case study and continued to engage the community with more public meetings and unrelenting lobbying across all levels of government to get the new $8.8million facility that was opened on 6 February.

The Yarra Valley would not have the hospital it has today with a new operating theatre, a six-chair dialysis unit, and a range of primary and palliative care services, along with the Yarra Valley Community Health Service without people power.

In Warburton, the road to retaining the much-loved, community-built AdventCare Yarra Ranges aged-care facility was more collaborative, but equally driven by locals who were determined to do whatever was needed

Inspiration from the Heart

He said he was extremely grateful to Mike for what he had taught him, and to the Heartland community which welcomed him into their church and homes.

"Our partnership and friendship that this guy has given, teaching me how to manage projects and helping me a lot with my communication ... I can't thank him enough," he said.

In March, Roland will be qualified and earning a sustainable income, along with his preaching and other community work.

It's part of his vision for lifting his community from a subsistence living to one where others like him have opportunity.

"If you have a degree in my village, people use you as an example and inspiration. They will say 'if Roland did it, why can't I'.

"It takes time to make a difference, and even if you're younger and you have your elders, you can tell them that leadership is not about age, but about knowledge and experience, and about vision and determination," he said.

He describes the opportunity to live a very different lifestyle from the extreme poverty of his village as something that he can take back and build on.

"Before this experience, I always feel empty, but now I have had this kind of opportunity and I can say it is enough," he said.

"I am very satisfied with what I have done now."

Roland Bayawan is the first of his community to do tertiary study and to travel to a country outside of the Philippines.

The 28-year-old from a small village in the Mindanao Island Group of the Philippines was a guest of Heartland Church in Yarra Glen recently, and returned to his community to share and build on his experiences.

Mike Baimbridge, a former pastor with Heartland who hosted Roland's visit, told the Mail this week that Roland was only home a short while before the island was lashed by the tropical storm 'Tembin' in December.

He said while tragically many lives were lost in the storm, Roland's village in the highlands was, thankfully, relatively unscathed.

Roland first met Mike during a visit to the island as part of a pastors' group.

Heartland has partnered with the village for six years implementing a number of sustainable projects starting with a small piggery which provided funds for some land to grow bananas, rubber trees and corn, leading to setting up a canteen in the local school, food parcels and building a co-op making affordable rice and other commodities available.

Mike recognised Roland as a leader.

He didn't start school until he was nine, and was going up into the mountains to get rubber to support his family, including eight siblings.

Mike said he had moved from an extremely subsistence lifestyle to running the projects as businesses, speaking in two or three churches and heading up youth work with three or four hundred people under him.

Along with his pastoral work, Roland is studying nursing and is very much aware of the power that has to inspire others.

Elite female cyclists here

Chez Monde's traditional white Christmas was a wonderland winner in the 2017 'Deck the Heales' Christmas window display.

The annual competition hosted by the Lions and Rotary clubs of Healesville and supported by Yarra Ranges Council aims to create a festive atmosphere in the main street and engage the business and wider community in celebrating Christmas.

Lesley Grigg from the Lions Club said the seven judges, a mix of Rotary, Lions and community members, had a tough task in choosing a winner from the 23 entries, a dilemma reflected in the awarding of no less than six equal second and six equal third prizes.

Chez Monde, however, was a stand out winner and owners Julie Lawson and daughters Cherie Brown and Natalie Pye, couldn't have been more delighted.

"With no official Christmas decorations in town, we wanted to do our bit to make the town a bit more Christmassy," said Julie and thought we would create something a bit magical with a white Christmas theme, lots of lights and elves and fairies," Julie said.

All three play an active role in the business through their art and jewellery and the Christmas window was another family activity which they said they had enormous fun putting together.

"We would really like to thank Rotary and Lions and the local community for supporting us," Julie said.

Ms Grigg said two special awards were presented, one to Monda Lodge who received a Certificate of Community Excellence which was presented with a basket of Christmas goodies for each of their three houses, and the Ezywear Shop for their Christmas Wishing Tree, a Healesville High School Leo's (Lions) Club initiative where customers made a gold coin donation to hang their wish on the tree.

The Jayco Herald Sun Tour will return to the Yarra Valley with elite cyclists competing on Tuesday, 30 January, for the inaugural Women's Herald Sun Tour.

The 123.5km race will begin in River Street, Healesville, at 10.30, before travelling through Yarra Glen, Gruyere, Woori Yallock, Launching Place, Yarra Junction, Wesburn, Warburton and Don Valley, before finishing back in Healesville at about 2pm.

Visitors will be able to take part in a free community ride on the course during the day and see cyclists come back through Healesville during the first loop of the race.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said Healesville would host a prestigious field of elite women riders from Australia and overseas.

"We had huge support from Yarra Valley residents and local schools when we had the tour come through in February 2016, with residents packing the start and finish line in Healesville to cheer on the riders," Cr Cox said.

"I'm proud that Yarra Ranges Council will be hosting the tour for another year," he said.

"Council is a strong advocate for female participation in sport and Council is pleased to be home to the inaugural Women's Herald Sun Tour."

River Street and Green Street between River Street and Maroondah Highway will be closed between 5am and 5pm on the day of the race and neither Coronation Park nor River Street carpark will be accessible.

Victoria Police will be running a Rolling Road Closure along the route and delays of between 15-30 minutes can be expected.

The annual Hard Rubbish collection times have been changed to accommodate the race and residents can visit yarraranges.vic.gov.au/ myneighbourhood for collection dates.

By Kath Gannaway A giant billboard in River Street, Healesville, has again brought home to locals the tragic disappearance of 22-year-old student Tej Chitnis.

Tej's family have been searching for him since 27 April 2016 when he was last seen by them at his Burwood East home that morning before setting off in his silver Golf car.

Their desperate search centred around Healesville and the Yarra Valley after a signal from his mobile phone indicated the phone was last located in the Healesville area.

His car was captured on CCTV at the Green Street and Maroondah Highway intersection on the day he disappeared.

The plight of Tej and his family has touched the hearts of Healesville people with the family never giving up on seeing their son and brother again.

Thieves who stole $500 worth of electrical equipment at Woori Yallock on New Year's Eve may have to answer to a higher authority than the courts if they are caught. The thieves broke into the Presbyterian Church on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road on 31 December stole a computer and a television.

Sergeant Tom Wilkinson from Warburton Police said thefts from community organisations are always disturbing.

Deadly nets not on Setting 'opera house' nets to catch yabbies is not only inhumane, it may be illegal, with hefty penalties attached.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is urging the public not to use opera house nets in Victorian public waters these Summer holidays after 13 platypus deaths last year from drowning in illegally set opera house nets in Victoria.

DELWP Senior Wildlife Investigator, Mike Sverns platypus are an iconic Australian species that are declining.

"To lose 13 platypus in one year is tragic," Mr Sverns said.

He said it is illegal to use opera house nets

in, or near Victorian public waters.

"These nets trap and prevent air breathing animals such as platypus, rakali (water rats), freshwater turtles and aquatic birds from escaping."

"This summer holidays we are encouraging Victorians not to use enclosed yabby traps such as opera house nets and only use platypus safe alternatives such as the hoop or open top lift nets."

As an incentive to report the illegal use of opera house nets the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA Australia) is offering a $5000 reward for information leading to the identification and conviction of anyone involved in the drowning death of a platypus with an enclosed yabby trap.

Reserve named for Jeanne

By Kath Gannaway A 20 hectare piece of prime bushland in Macclesfield has been dedicated to the life's work, and the memory, of Healesville wildlife champion, the late Jeanne Wilcox.

The land, purchased with funds raised by the Judith Eardley Save Wildlife Association (JESWA) where Jeanne had volunteered for 15 years, will provide additional habitat for the critically endangered Helmeted Honeyeater.

Members of Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FoHHE), Parks Victoria and DELWP, joined JESWA volunteers and members of Jeanne's family on 7 December, 2017, to celebrate the purchase of the land and to formally dedicate the land as the Jeanne Wilcox Reserve.

In what was described by FoHHE president Bob Anderson as one of the quickest land sales in conservation history - "no governments involved" he quipped, he thanked the family of the late Willy Veit who had owned and cared for 'Bilagal' for the past 20 years.

The rare piece of bushland came up for sale as part of Mr Veit's estate and the family were thrilled to be able to keep its conservation status.

Mr Veit's daughter Tania Kirby said her father was a passionate farmer and conservationist.

"He was heavily involved in landcare and spent quite a bit of time here keeping weeds out and keeping it in pristine condition.

"He was always just happy to keep it for conservation and to have this kept as a reserve ... well, he would be as pleased as punch," she said.

"The whole family is very happy with this outcome."

JESWA chair and friend and colleague of Jeanne, Peter Hannaford, said everyone at the Wildlife Centre was grateful that the land to be known as the Jeanne Wilcox Reserve was to be part of the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve.

It was a particularly poignant dedication following Jeanne's death in June 2017, and the imminent closure after 17 years of the Wildlife Centre.

"We are a small number of volunteers who have grown older - not old - together," he said, adding that the volunteers were links in the chain that had seen a business supporting wildlife flourish.

He paid tribute to Jeanne saying she was the 'heart and soul' of the centre who made it a special place.

She was also an astute business woman and tireless worker.

"Throughout her 15 years and 40-hour weeks at the shop Jeanne made more than enough money to single-handedly pay for the reserve that appropriately bears her name," he said.

Jeanne's son Danny, on behalf of the family, said his mother would be honoured &ndash; if a little miffed at all the fuss!

"Really, mum would love it," he said.

"She always wanted to live in the bush, and that's where she is now - we'll always have a place where we can come and see her."

While these communities have shown they will 'man up' when the things held most dear to them are threatened, it's rare to have people show up in big numbers to support a new enterprise, as happened with the launch of Healeville CoRE (Community Renewable Energy) in July 2017.

More than 225 turned up at The Memo and voted resoundingly for a renewable energy future.

The meeting followed several months of planning by the CoRE steering group, but the response to what is essentially a project aimed at making Healesville a solar energy-driven town, was overwhelming.

Cr Fiona McAllister described the community response, along with Yarra Glen's push for solar energy and Warburton's Hydro project, as "a very determined ground-up push for change with communities taking matters into their own hands."

A working group formed on the night, the group was incorporated and continues to work to make solar energy affordable and accessible and to promote and educate on a more sustainable energy future.

In a letter to the Mail in the early days of the Healesville Hospital campaign, a resident urged people to continue to support those who had taken on the role of representing the community.

After attending a community meeting she admitted to her 'shame' at not playing a more active role.

"I'm ashamed, that I have attended only one SHAGG meeting. I 'meant' to go and rationalised my absence (who would miss one lone person?).

"These amazing people are representing us.

How can our presence not be important?

"As our representatives they need community input and support.

"We owe them our presence at meetings to validate their efforts, to encourage and reinvigorate them, and to keep up the momentum," she wrote.

"Their unpaid efforts are for us, and for future generations."

2017 ... it's done and dusted now, but on reflection it was far from uneventful as the pages of the Mail recorded.

It was a year marked in stories and photos of achievements of young and old, celebrations of lives well-lived and loved-ones sadly missed, awards, ongoing campaigns and new ones, trauma on our roads, local perspectives on national issues such as SSM, the NBN, NDIS, Assisted Dying Bill and off-shore refugees, festivals and milestones, sport, conservation storms (that is conservation and storms!), devastating house fires and heart-warming community responses, stories of bravery and resilience &hellip; and the odd 'quirky' tale to entertain.

The year started sadly with the sudden death of Gruyere CFA stalwart Don Bigham.

We said goodbye also to too many 'elders',

among them Mel Gowing, centenarian Myra Healey, Jeanne Wilcox, Peter Kimberley, Kevin Ford, Ted Gramlich, Bob Armstrong, Betty Warner, Carmel Fox and Lorna Brown.

The death in May of Healesville High School teacher Sue Contarino (Tanner) whose 'Walk With Me' campaign to raise awareness of ovarian cancer saw more than 500 people walk in February, hit hard. As did other young lives lost.

But the young also provided inspiration and joy. Bianca Kennedy from Launching Place and Lilia Corbett, 13, from Yarra Glen were celebrated as 'triple-zero heroes' for their part in saving the lives of their father and sister respectively. Music students wowed audiences playing with Orchestra Victoria's On The Move program, Coldstream Primary students made history chartering the first Yarra Ranges' Early Act Club (junior Rotary) and Healesville's Jayden Crozier received an United National internship.

2017 - THE YEAR THAT WAS Major developments were in the news with Aldi's plans for a Healesville store finally getting the go-ahead after agreements were reached at a VCAT hearing in August, the Warburton Hydro project, and a proposed tourist park in Coldstream was also given the green light in March with Yarra Ranges Council giving its blessing to the proposal.

A $4.4m retail/apartment complex flagged for Healesville's main street drew fire from objectors with the developers left in no doubt that heightism is an issue, while in Warburton Yarra Ranges Enterprise Centre's (YREC) future came under threat with the proposed government sell-off of the land it has occupied for 17 years.

Haining Farm also continues to be in the news with the local community up in arms about plans to revegetate the Don Road as part

of the Yellingbo Conservation Area. That battle is far from over!

Healesville Kooweerup Road was again tragically in the news with three fatalities prompting a call by emergency services for work to be done on the road. The speed limit was lowered from 80km/h to 70km/h, and surface work done.

Stories that made us smile! The mystery of the missing (or found shoes) ... perpetrator, a local fox! The perennial big cat stories, things got a bit too hot when the Herb & Chilli festival van burst into flames and, ewe guessed it, Lachie Pitman and friends' Variety Club Bash team "Sheep Assist Wool Save Ewe" in action ... with guest navigator, the Mail's own Derek Schlennstedt on board for a no-holds-baaaad assignment he will never forget!

What is something people don't know about you?

I'm an avid fan of Star Trek, I love it. I like the originals but to some degree all the other ones are good too.

What would your final meal be?

I like my food but I would say a nice bowl of cherries and raspberries.

What has been your most memorable moment?

"Probably the birth of all three children, they've been around for some time now and they're still my three best friends."

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

I'd like to see the day when all our left over bushland is preserved into national park so that future generations will be able to see the countryside as some of us older people saw it in the past. Younger generations born today need to be able to see Australia the way it was many years ago, because it is disappearing more and more.

What book are you reading, or the last book you read?

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson; I learnt a lot from that book.

What four guests, past or present, would you invite to a dinner party?

Kevin Rudd, Rupert Hamer, Bob Brown and Nelson Mandela, What is your favourite television show?

Star trek of course.

What are you looking forward to in 2018?

I've been councillor some time now and my great strong burning interest in local government is to try and keep our environment intact, and keep it looking as good as possible and so that's a very strong interest for me.

We've got a good council and that makes it a

lot easier for a mayor and I'm looking forward to working with them and helping the people in our municipality.

What is your top priority at the moment?

I'm looking forward to continuing all the major jobs that council has on at the moment, there are some really quite good ones at the moment and I'm looking forward to council continuing to work closely with each other and our residents so that we continue to talk to and help them at all times.

I note with some concern the procrastinating debate concerning the future use of the land cornering on Green Street and River Street in Healesville.

This land now known as 'The Green' is also contiguous with the shire public car park.

This land has been owned by VicTrack since 1889. It was granted to what was the equivalent of VicTrack at no purchase cost by the Right Honourable John Adrian Lewis Hope, the Governor at the time.

The land has cost the current VicTrack nothing and never has. As in many cases of Victrack land they have received rent for many, many years with no outgoings. In fact, a VicTrack officer told me many years ago the real estate department of VicTrack was the only department making a profit.

The land has become valuable not because of anything VicTrack has done or created, but because of inflation over 100 years and the development of housing and commercial properties in Healesville.

This parcel of land will play a very important role in the future of Healesville potentially as a speakers' platform or a passive rest area for people to rest, as I have already noticed.

I am sure of one thing, with Aldi coming soon, we don't need any more shops, nor do we need any more coffee shops!

Finally, the land over 100 years has cost VicTrack nothing therefore it will lose nothing by transferring the property to the people via the Yarra Ranges Shire.

Sign mania The main street of Warburton has recently had yet another kerb-side sign bestowed upon it to join the multitude of signs declaring "ALCOHOL FREE AREA" (whatever that means).

This one bears the legend "ROUGH SUR-

FACE NEXT 1km". As the surface appears much as it has for years - relatively smooth except for a little fraying at the edges, I can't understand why the sign has been put there.

Is it anticipated that the surface will deteriorate in the future to the extent that it becomes rough and erecting a sign is cheaper than fixing it?

And over the road at the entrance to Thomas Avenue is another new sign, this one depicting a bus in a red circle with a red line through it. Neither I nor anyone else has ever seen a bus down there - probably because no bus driver in their right mind would contemplate doing it. So what's this one for? Is an onslaught of deranged bus drivers expected any day soon?

Love the pane I do miss the Christmas street decorations as we drive through Healesville, but would like to congratulate all the shop owners who went to the trouble to create beautiful Christmas windows.

Also the home owners who lit up their houses creating an exciting, festive atmosphere.

Some of the shop windows were incredibly beautiful and looked particularly stunning as you drive through at night.

I was really proud to take my nephew and his children, visiting from England, on an evening walk along the main street and they were delighted to see the trouble that some of the shops had gone to to make their Christmas windows.

They were very impressed also with the house in Don Road that each year seems to get bigger, brighter and better.

Thank you for making our drive home in December so delightful.

Jeff’s back to roots

“I’ve played here with different bands and it’s just a really relaxed, casual kind of groove,” Mr Jenkins said.

“It’s what I love about music on a Sunday ... it’s a great spot, with fantastic views, there’s cool music happening and you’re in a winery could life get any better?”

Tour de Force

By Seth Lukas Hynes Star Wars: The Last Jedi Starring Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and Mark Hamill Rated M May The Force Be With You Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a beautiful and consistently enthralling film marred by flimsy character development.

The Rebel Fleet, led by General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) is in deep trouble, pursued relentlessly by the First Order Fleet and unable to escape to light-speed. Meanwhile, the gifted Rey (Daisy Ridley) approaches Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), a self-exiled Jedi Master, urging him to help the Rebellion and teach her in the ways of the Force.

The Last Jedi does an exceptional job of maintaining taut suspense through the entire run-time. The film immediately establishes a clear threat and sets up logical goals for the characters to pursue against this threat. Despite frequently cutting to calmer scenarios, such as a whimsical escapade in an alien casino and Rey’s sombre introspection on Luke’s island, the film constantly reminds us of the dire situation the Rebellion is caught within.

Unfortunately, while the characters are engaging and the performances are universally excellent, the development is very weak.

Disillusionment and setting aside the past to make yourself anew are major themes of The Last Jedi, but for all its portentous build-up, the characters don’t really change. Even after shocking revelations come into play and their respective sides are upended, Rey and antagonist Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) remain static; they still want to save and destroy the Rebellion (respectively), just as before.

The Last Jedi is a riveting and intensely suspenseful film, but has a disappointing lack of character development.

Cars catalyst for catch-up

By Kath Gannaway Now in its ninth year, The Wandin Custom Car and Bike Show has established a reputation not only as an outstanding display of vehicles, but as a popular mid-week get-together for friends and families.

The Rotary Club of Wandin, supported by numerous local motoring businesses, the Wandin Bendigo Community Bank and other community organisations, runs the monthly show from October through to March.

All roads lead to the Wandin East Recreation Reserve on the third Wednesday of each month as hundreds of pre-1985 cars and multi-generational bikes file through the gates and make their way onto the showground.

Owners and enthusiasts mingle with those who have a more casual appreciation of the eclectic collection of horsepower, chrome and glossy paint jobs.

Starting at 6pm and running through to 9pm, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with the local CFA providing a barbeque and wood-fired pizza and refreshments also on offer. The entry fee for cars and bikes if $5 with gold coin entry for patrons.

The event supports the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal and local community organisations.

Rotarian Warwick Bisley said the club took over the event last year and as a result of their first year made a donation to the hosptial of $20,000.

“Other funds raised were predominantly used for project supporting youth in the Yarra Valley,” Mr Bisley said.

Exciting times for the Girls'' Under 12 team.

Cream of junior cricketers

By Kath Gannaway With extreme weather extending the break for senior cricketers across the Yarra Valley, the cream of the Valley's junior crop take centre stage for their upcoming representative carnivals.

Annually during the summer school holidays, Melbourne's most talented junior cricketers pit their skills in the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union (VMCU) representative carnivals.

The YVCA has a proud history in the competition playing in many finals and taking out multiple titles. This year's competition involves a series of preliminary matches which act as qualifying for a knockout finals series.

The best of the Valley have been put through their paces with a series of training/ selection sessions, plus a series of Region 8 games against Ferntree Gully, West Gippsland and Mornington Penisula Cricket Associations rounded out a solid preparation for the competition.

After some nervous moments, the teams were selected, and caps presented, at a formal presentation at Coldstream Cricket Club before the Christmas break.

With many of the girls just beginning their cricketing journeys, they found the competition tough, but the learning experience enjoyable. The team consisted of Briana Parker (Launching Place), Natasha Vassallo (Gruyere), Ameilia Kuth (Launching Place), Pearl Saurine (Warburton-Millgrove), Holly Robins (Mt Evelyn), Ella Amore (Launching Place), Eliza Owen (Launching Place), Alisha Beers (Gruyere) and Samara Kuth (Launching Place). Caitlin Parker of Launching Place gave the girls great guidance as coach of the team. With girls' cricket going through dramatic growth, the future of this team looks bright.

The Under 12 and 14 Boys teams kick off their campaigns on Monday, and their competition consists of five qualifying games, plus finals across two weeks. Competing in the Josh Browne Plate, the Under 12 team will be coached by Stuart Parker (Launching Place) and Chris Handasyde (Healesville) with the team represented by Baylin Spencer (Woori Yallock), Billy Thurlow (Hoddles Creek), Cody Anderson (Healesville), Dan Potter (Mt Evelyn), David Carvill (Launching Place), Dylan Walker (Warburton-Millgrove), Harvey Smith (Seville), Hudson Semple-Hetherton (War-

burton-Millgrove), John Thurlow (Hoddles Creek), Joshua Handasyde (Healesville), Lucas Parker (Launching Place), Luke Pearse (Yarra Glen), Raph Lever (Healesville), Riley Cameron (Healesville) and Ryan Thompson (Warburton-Millgrove). The following players have been recognised for their excellent skills; Lucy Sinnott (Wandin) and Taylah Darvell (Mt Evelyn) in the Under 14 Girls, Hayley Fry (Healesville) and Georgia Parker (Launching Place) in the Under 16 Girls, Caitlin Parker (Launching Place) and Ari Taylor (Coldstream) in the Under 18 Girls, and Daniel Ebbels (Healesville) in the Under 14 Boys. To be selected to play in the state's highest underage competition is a phenomenal achievement.

The Valley's best Senior cricketers are also beginning their preparations for the VCCL Country Week competition being held in February. With a host of changes to the delivery of the competition, the squad are looking forward to finalising their preparations over the next month. Rick Bean has been reappointed as coach of the team, whilst Mt Evelyn gun all rounder Kane Jones has been appointed the captain of the squad. Training and selection will begin shortly with the hierarchy keen to consolidate their position in Division 2 of the competition after finding it tough going in last year's competition.

Healesville for Cup The Healesville Racing Club is gearing up for a big day on Saturday, 13 January, with thousands of people expected to come along and take in the picturesque surroundings, with the running of the 2018 Sutton Grange Healesville Cup. It's a real family fun filled day out with loads of free kids' activities including Kelly Sports Australia who will be conducting lots of fun and games for the children. As a bonus the first 500 kids through the gates on Saturday will receive a great Country Racing summer kids pack with loads of goodies.

There will be six action-packed races kicking off just after 1pm, with gates opening around at 11am.

The family-friendly format is a new way to just turn up and enjoy tennis and could also be a great warm-up to the two-day 2018 Healesville Tennis Club Open.

It’s the Stinger you need In a year in which Australian SUV sales have overtaken those of traditional passenger cars for the first time the launch of the Kia Stinger was welcome news for keen drivers.

Because, as sensible and practical as SUVs are, with a few exceptions they don’t provide much driving enjoyment.

It’s no coincidence that the arrival of the Stinger has coincided with the demise of Ford Falcon and the switch from local production to importation of Holden Commodore and Toyota Camry. Quite clearly Kia Australia has seen an opportunity to bring in its highest performance vehicle.

Stinger combines excellent performance with cruising comfort in a body that attracted admiring looks wherever we went during our fortnight behind the wheel.

Back in 2006 Kia pulled off a major coup by recruiting the renowned German designer Peter Schreyer from Audi as its chief design officer. One of his earliest moves was the creation of a new corporate grille known as the Tiger Nose that in various guises has been a feature of every Kia model over the past decade.

Behind the grille there’s a long, low bonnet with air vents on either side reminiscent of the now-departed Holden Monaro, together with side vents.

The entry level Stinger S gets 18-inch alloy wheels, the higher spec Si, GT-Line and GT models get 19-inch. All models come with chrome coated quad exhaust pipes.

Stinger is a rear-wheel drive five-door hatch with a sleek profile that could easily be mistaken as a coupe. It comes with the choice of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol or 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol and three equipment levels, tagged S, Si and GT-Line in the four and GT in the six. A few Holden and Ford punters did ask if there would ever be a

V8. Sadly … no.

We recently reviewed the 2.0-litre GT-Line and this week’s test is on the V6 GT. Despite Stinger’s fastback styling headroom in both front and rear is good, though a bit of ducking and weaving is needed for taller occupants to get inside. Rear legroom is good by courtesy of the car’s 2.9-metre wheelbase.

Stinger GT gets Sports Nappa leather appointed seats with a GT logo. All models have powered driver’s seats enhanced in the GT with lumbar support, thigh extender and position memory.

The boot is wide and flat but without much height. Capacity is listed at 406 litres with the rear seatbacks in place and up to 1114 with them folded.

Kia Stinger come with the choice of two turbocharged petrol engines, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol that produces 182 kW of power, with maximum torque of 353 Nm running all the way from 1400 to 4000rpm. The 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 has peak power of 272 kW, and a big 510 Nm torque from 1300 to 4500rpm.

Both engines drive the rear wheels through Kia’s in-house eight-speed multi-mode automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted shift paddles.

All-wheel-drive is available in some overseas markets, as is a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, however at this stage there are no plans for either to come to Australia. Nor is there a manual gearbox on the horizon.

New Kia Stinger is a large sporting hatch with plenty of style. child seat anchorage points; and impact sensing auto door unlocking.

Added features on the mid-spec Stinger Si are autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assist, as well as front parking sensors and driver attention alert.

The GT-Line and GT variants get a 360-degree camera; electrochromic door mirrors; blind spot detector; rear cross traffic alert; dynamic bending light; and high beam assist.

The Stinger GT uses an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen mounted at the top of the centre fascia. Rather than relying entirely on touch commands, with the distraction that these can often entail, a number of the most commonly used features are accessed through old-style push buttons situated below the screen.

As befits its spot at the top of the Stinger range the GT gets a 15-speaker premium Harmon/Kardon audio system powered by an external amplifier. Speed dependent volume control is a neat feature.

Bluetooth pairing is simple and quick allowing access to both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The satellite navigation system comes with 10 years of updates for both SUNA traffic information and MapCare.

There are USB and Auxiliary inputs recessed at the bottom of the front console directly alongside a storage space that’s designed for smartphones. The GT and GT-Line models also provide for wireless phone charging.

Entry and exit is surprisingly easy given the Stinger’s low profile. We needed to set the driver’s seat to its lowest setting but once ensconced the seat is comfortable and supportive thanks to the GT’s adjustable bolsters.

The view out of the rear mirror is restricted

by Stinger’s long, low angled rear window but that’s the norm in cars of its ilk.

The difference in performance between the 2.0-litre four and the 3.3-litre V6 was surprisingly small which is as much about how good the smaller engine in the lighter (1693 kg) car is, rather than any deficiency in the larger (1780 kg) car.
