Traders’ alliance counts

BY PATRICK LAVERICK More than 50 businesses have joined forces in an informal traders group designed to help businesses prevent crime and promote Pakington Street as a shopping destination.

Buster’s Bar and Grill owner Buster Herman says the group is reluctant to call itself a traders’ association because of the hurdles involved in formally organising.

“The reason they don’t want to set up a traders (association) is that it’s a cumbersome thing, there’s a few hoops you have to jump through,” he said.

“Most of the people down here are running businesses, we don’t have time

to do that sort of stuff, so it’s more about jumping on the coat tails of either the (West Geelong) traders, or reigniting this one and finding someone who’s got the time and inclination to do that.”

Pakington Street had a traders association some time ago, but Brown’s Mensland manager Cameron Brown said the old association lost momentum due to declining participation.

“People were voluntarily paying a membership fee and as those numbers started to dwindle, there was a lot of work being done to benefit everybody but only a few people were paying for it.”

Voice on Pako reported in August that

traders were urged by police to form a group to fight rising crime rates.

Police advised traders to co-operate after a spate of robberies and break-ins earlier in the year along Pakington Street.

“When the spate was on, every time my dogs barked I’d be up and looking, and I’d jump in the car and just do laps behind the shops hoping to catch them,” Mr Herman said.

“But it just put everyone on edge, the business owners couldn’t sleep, they were terrorised, basically, some of the residents were too.”

In a meeting earlier this month, Mr Herman said police and council advised

the group to report crimes, no matter how small.

“One thing that we discussed was that people don’t like to ring triple-zero because it’s only graffiti or they only tried to get in but they didn’t, but then if you don’t report it, people are oblivious to it becoming more common.

“There might be an offender that lives close by that’s being an opportunist or something, so it was making people aware that you ring triple-zero and say it’s not urgent, I don’t need an ambulance but this is what’s happened and then it’s in the database,” he said.

Creative approach to the street life

BY PATRICK LAVERICK Sam Hamilton has been in Pakington Street only six months and it’s already paid off after winning $500 in a competition to help make the street safer and more desirable.

The manager of Earth to Life, who also holds a marketing degree, said he looked at what other shopping strips were doing to improve their image.

“My ideas were basically a big combination of things that I’ve seen from travelling around and seeing what works for towns and streets.”

He suggested a number of ways to add culture and create a buzz around the shopping strip, including live music events, art installations and twilight markets.

“I’m really supportive of anything creative like art and music, I’m really passionate about that stuff.

“Maybe some live music and events and statues and maybe some murals and paintings and I think the street’s great for the shopping side of it and the cafes, there’s a great structure there, it just needs a bit of tender loving care on the outside.

“I feel like if you can harness people’s creative passion you can give them the chance to do what they love and that energy’s going to come through to the street.

“If you can put a few nice artworks on some blank walls and give it a bit of colour then it’s just going to attract people to the street.”

The competition was put together by a traders group to improve safety and amenity after a string of robberies earlier this year.

looking at new ways to breathe life into the street.

“Sam had made a really good entry; you could kind of hear his passion

coming through and his enthusiasm coming through in the entry.

“There was a lot of good ideas, a lot of shared ideas, everyone wanted to push

the idea of street art, more creative type of things, I think that Geelong West has a bit of a reputation for being very close to a Melbourne lifestyle.”

Pakington Street is set for a security upgrade after securing a state grant.

Grant to raise security awareness

BY PATRICK LAVERICK The State Government has awarded a $10,000 community safety grant to Pakington Street to help reduce crime along the shopping strip.

Business owner Niki Nurnaitis applied for the grant earlier this year with the help of Geelong Council, with the money to be spent on raising awareness about crimes and training retailers.

“Most of the money will go to education and literature, training retailers

presenting a united front - it was shown down there that it reduced crime significantly.

“We’re hoping the same will happen here,” Ms Nurnaitis said.

Buster’s Bar and Grill owner Buster Herman said the best way to guarantee the same success was for every trader to follow the advice from police.

“They have kits with the ‘no cash left on premises’ stickers and advice to put the till at the front door.

“Everyone has to be on board - if

Police and council have held a number of meetings for businesses to discuss crime prevention strategies, using the example of a strategy used by traders in Ocean Grove.

“We had a bit of a spate here earlier in the year, people were feeling terrorised.

“I had residents coming here in tears, one lady in particular came in and said she put a security door on the front door, but they got in through the garage, out the back.

“She’s on her own, her husband had recently died, they ransacked the place and she’s gutted, she was in tears.”

“It’s a wonderful event because it’s working with different organisations within the Geelong West community.”

The carols will feature performances by local harpist Peter Roberts, the St John’s School Choir, The Acabellas, Rebecca and Eva Hay and OneCare’s very own choir.

to the community that had helped them, and had been busy rehearsing, Corrie said.

“They have actually owned it,” she said.

“We’ve been here for just over eight years and developed our own little community.”

BY LUKE VOOGT SCHOOLS, businesses and community groups have combined in Geelong’s west to bring Christmas cheer to the city’s most needy in a first-time carols concert.

Carols in West Park, on 3 December, would be the first event of its type, according to Geelong West Neighbourhood House’s Pam Virgona.

“It’s certainly the first with the partners involved,” she said.

The volunteer-run neighbourhood house joined with St John’s Lutheran School and Hodges Real Estate for the event, to collect food for OneCare Geelong.

“It’s got a lovely community feel,” Pam said. “There are only a few blocks separating these different organisations.”

The organisations spent six weeks planning the free event in the “jewel of the crown in Geelong West”, and Pam was keen to get locals along.

“We don’t want it to be Carols by the Bay or Carols by Candlelight,” she said.

“We just want it to be grassroots bring a rug, bring your picnic basket and most importantly bring the kids.”

The carols had originally been set to go ahead on 26 November but storms forced organisers to postpone the event until 3 December.

“It was just too risky,“ Pam said. “I was sitting at the park in the car watching the lightning.”

OneCare’s Corrie Inei called on locals to bring non-perishable items to the event, to place under the organisation’s Christmas tree at the West Park rotunda.

School’s out, the sun is sizzling and summer is here. It’s a perfect time of year to get out and about to enjoy the great outdoors. But summer also brings with it higher UV levels and the need to be SunSmart. Two in three Australians will develop some form of skin cancer by the time they’re 70 years of age, so it’s important to slip, slop and slap to reduce your risk. But with so many sunscreens on the market, which one should you choose?

Different types of sunscreen he ingredients in sunscreen protect your skin by either absorbing the sun’s UV radiation, or relecting it away from the skin. Both can be effective and safe if used properly. Choose a sunscreen that is labelled ‘broad spectrum’ – these offer protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Some products may be labelled as water resistant or lasting for 4 hours, but you should always reapply sunscreen at least every TWO hours, and more frequently if you’ve been swimming, sweating or towel drying. Make sure to use enough sunscreen when applying – about seven teaspoons for a full body application. Most sunscreens should be applied 20 minutes before going outside.

Care on every plate Pasquale Di Maio started a gluten-free fish and chip shop in his home suburb Highton, now he’s taking the Aussie favourite upmarket on Pakington Street.

The Voice on Pako got a taste of his latest venture in this month’s Q&A. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am 35 years old and I live in Highton with my wife and business partner Millie, 19-month-old son Frankie and dog Simba. I was born in Naples, Italy, so it’s safe to say that my love for good quality food has stemmed from there. I enjoy getting out on the bike and Netflix marathons. I also enjoy cooking, experimenting with new recipes and mastering dishes that my coeliac wife hasn’t been able to enjoy in years.

What makes your store different to the multitude of fish and chip shops in Geelong?

We’re all about fresh food, cold beers and good laughs. I wanted to cater for people with food intolerances and people that just simply didn’t like fish.

Does your family have a history working in the food industry?

My mother-in-law is an exceptional cook but apart from that, there’s no family history.

What got you into the business?

I started off with a fish and chip shop and really enjoyed the work. It was something I felt I could take to the next level and this venture was the next step in accomplishing that dream. I wouldn’t say that opening a shop on Pako has always been the dream but now that I’m in it, I can say that I am absolutely living the dream.

What attracted you to Pakington Street?

I’ve always loved the cosmopolitan atmosphere that Pakington Street has to offer. There’s something on the street for everyone - restaurants, cafes, boutiques, you name it!

What did it take to get your store open for business?

It took us a good six or seven months to

get it up and running by the time we fit out our kitchen and got through all the hurdles of setting up a new hospitality establishment. There were definitely lots of unexpected ‘surprises’ along the way but we were grateful to have the expertise of my father-in-law Santo, who did a lot of the hands-on work.

How exciting was it to open the store?

We opened the store on Melbourne Cup Day. There was a long anticipated wait for the opening so we were overly excited on the day. I was thinking, “geez we’ve poured our heart and soul into this venture, I hope our customers are as excited as what we are about our food”. It was a huge relief when our first ‘real’ customer came through the door.

How’s business going?

The locals have been great. It’s definitely been even more fun than I’d initially imagined. Experimenting with different dishes, meeting new people and not knowing what each day will bring has certainly kept me on my toes.

Who would you like to have dinner with, alive or dead?

Marco Pierre White would be my choice, particularly if he’s cooking the dinner.

Who wouldn’t want to share food with the godfather of modern cooking?

When to wear sunscreen?

Extended exposure to the sun’s UV radiation causes sunburn, damage to the skin and can lead to skin cancer. But too little UV and you’re body doesn’t get the chance to develop enough vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones, muscles and overall health. As a general rule, from September to April when UV levels are often 3 and above, most people require only a few minutes of sun exposure for their vitamin D needs. You should wear sunscreen if you plan on being in the sun for 5 minutes or more, especially in the middle of the day when UV levels are most intense.

Other forms of sun protection Sunscreen should never be used as the only form of protection from the sun. Remember to cover up with sun-protective clothing, wear a hat and sunglasses and seek shade whenever possible.

What about the kids?

Children have more sensitive skin which may be irritated by some chemical ingredients. Look for sensitive or kid’s sunscreens which have either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide – these are less likely to cause skin reactions. As for babies, their skin is extra sensitive and can burn easily, so it is recommended that infants under 12 months of age are not purposely exposed to direct sun when UV levels are 3 or above. If adequate clothing and shade are not available, use a sensitive formula on small areas of skin.
