‘Sarahs, Michaels’ targeted for blood

By Luke Voogt Sarah and Michael have emerged as the most common blood donor names in Geelong as the city’s Red Cross fights to meet Christmas demand.

“Michaels are just nice people,” said Michael Cammaroto as he gave blood.

The St Albans Park auto worker was one of three men of the same name who donated on Monday.

“It’s something I can do that takes an hour of my time every couple of weeks and it helps a lot of people,” the 56-year-old said.

“The nurses are very helpful and look after you when you’re there. It’s not painful at all.”

The long-time donor, one of four Michaels in his extended family, urged Geelong residents to give blood.

“It’s not much (effort) considering what

lives you can save,” he said.

Blood Service spokesperson Leigh Johnston said Geelong Red Cross urgently needed 206 local donors between 26 December and 3 January.

“No matter what your name is, we would love to add you to our life savers list.

“We’re asking people to factor a blood donation into their holiday plans - what better gift to give at Christmas than the gift of life.”

Blood donations normally dropped off over the festive season, Leigh said.

“Many of our regular donors are away on holiday, so we are asking new donors to roll up their sleeves and give blood at this critical time of year.

“Many of us are looking forward to a wellearned holiday, but the need for blood never takes a break.”

Geelong’s council needs to spend nearly $12 million on IT upgrades over the next year, according to a consultant’s report.

Ernst and Young recommended the investment to “boost productivity, reduce costs and improve responsiveness to the community” amid a forecast $125 million debt legacy from Andrews Government administrators.

Road risk

The significantly higher numbers of crashes over the Christmas holidays put increased demand on blood supplies, Leigh said.

The centre also needed blood for platelet donations which were critical for the treatment of cancer patients, he said.

The product’s shelf life of five days made the need dire during holiday periods, he added.

“Cancer treatments, emergencies, and other serious medical conditions don’t stop for Christmas and there are thousands of Australians who rely on donated blood each and every day.”

Leukaemia and chemotherapy can reduce patients’ platelets to dangerously low levels, which can cause spontaneous bleeding, including in the brain.

Healthy people can donate platelets every two to four weeks, compared to three times a year for whole blood.

A new system urging foreign tourists to stay left when driving has failed to deliver any improvement along the Great Ocean Road, according to an MP. “All road-users” remained at risk as foreigners failed to heed the warnings of the Visiting Driver Safety Program’s stickers, brochures and videos, Polwarth MP Richard Riordan said.

Land gift Surf Coast Shire will give State Government land worth more than $2 million at residential prices to allow construction of an indoor stadium in Torquay’s north.

The shire said it would seek $3 million in state funding for the $13.5 million facility, earmarked for the 3176 square metre site within the boundaries of the government’s Surf Coast Secondary College.

After losing a toe and surviving prostate cancer and leukaemia this year, John Bartlett’s luck is finally turning around.

The Grovedale pensioner was one of the five winners in the fifth and final week of the Indy’s annual Talkin’ Turkey competition.

“You bloody beauty!” the stoked 73-yearold said his win was delivered on Monday.

“Are there cooking instructions on this turkey? It’s pretty big.”

John had just recovered from prostate cancer and was in remission for leukaemia when

he spoke to the Indy’s turkey correspondent.

But the cancers and losing yet another toe to diabetes earlier this year failed to dim his festive spirit.

“Now I’ve only got two toes on one foot,” he said.

“Everybody has tough years but I’m good as gold. Waking up every morning's a bonus.”

The turkey was one of several recent wins for John, said wife Anne.

“He hasn’t been terribly well. He'll be so rapt with this because he’s never won anything and now he’s had a couple of wins this month.

Geelong motorists will enjoy pre-Christmas relief from a recent 19.4 cent price jump in petrol prices, according to APCO director Peter Anderson.

He predicted cuts after Geelong's average price rose from 128.1 to 147.5 cents per litre last week, the highest level in three months.

“The prices will be cheaper between now and Christmas,” Mr Anderson said.

Prices began falling again in Geelong this week, averaging 146.8 cents on Monday.

Mr Anderson predicted further falls.

“I think prices will be cheaper on Christmas day than they are today,” he said.

Mr Anderson blamed the recent hikes on big fuel retailers.

“It’s certainly got nothing to do with Christmas. Twelve months a year our prices go up and down at retail board level.”

Major petrol companies raising prices forced independents such as APCO to do the same, he explained.

“A couple of majors have moved up their prices and we saw an opportunity to do so.

"I sympathise with the public, I really do, but you’ve got to go to survive. We’re all trying to make a living on the fuel industry here.”

Prices now moved in a four to six-week cycle rather than the weekly routine of previous decades, Mr Anderson said.

“It’s all changed now.”

Mr Anderson said average prices could be misleading given that most people filled up on fuel where it was cheapest.

“Often the amount the average driver pays is lower than the average price,” he said.

NEWS DOUBLE TAKE The boffins at Deakin University in Geelong have been producing some interesting work lately check the breakthrough on longer-life milk elsewhere in today’s Indy.

But sometimes, jeez, the average punter must wonder about the research return on their taxpayer dollars.

Double Take has mused previously on the value of Deakin’s work in areas such as the impact of climate change on parrot beak sizes.

The research into whether Vincent van Gogh was psychotic when he cut off an ear was another questionable example (Answer: duh!).

But a new frontier was broached last week when Deakin unveiled a study into the international legal status of … emojis.

Yes, those twee little symbols accompanying so many digital communications can have a “dark side”, according to Deakin.

Apparently ambiguity over what an emoji might actually convey has led to all sorts of legal trouble overseas, even jail time. Sometimes a smiley face is more than just a smiley face, it seems!

As such, Deakin’s Dr Elizabeth Kirley and Associate Professor Marilyn McMahon have urged a “legal response to digital speech that can confuse, threaten, defame, and otherwise offend its target”.

Presumably the legal risks prevented Elizabeth and Marilyn from adding the smiling poo emoji to the end of that!

The surf's up with the latest installation of 3D wall art in central Geelong.

The image really put passersby in the picture as they posed for holiday snaps with seemingly a part of the colourful scenery behind them.

City Hall recently added a fourth instalment with a lifespan to continue beyond Christmas.

Artist Scott Jensen has put the finishing touches on the giant Summer Christmas themed artwork on the Brougham Street wall of Novotel Geelong.

The artwork, featuring a giant wave with a surf board, lets the public catch a wave and is sure to be another popular addition to the Central Geelong Christmas Trail in 2017.

People are encouraged to jump in the image, take a picture and tag @lovecentralgeelong and #geelongchristmas on social media and enjoy unique Christmas photos.

The first three artworks, Christmas Snow Globe at The Carousel, Santa’s Treasure in Malop Street, and the Storybook at Geelong’s library have been “well received” in social media and local papers, according to City Hall.

The 3D Christmas Artwork is part of the Central Geelong Christmas Trail with more than 28 activities on offer throughout the festive season.

With the floating Christmas tree as the star attraction, the activities provide families with unique, fun and free activities.

The Christmas trail is an initiative of Central Geelong Marketing and City of Greater Geelong. The 3D Christmas Artwork is presented with the support of Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine, Geelong Library and Heritage Centre and Revitalising Central Geelong.

Meanwhile, research conducted elsewhere could have some practical application for a certain Geelong sports team.

The Cat Tracker study will now go national after the interesting findings gleaned from attaching video cameras to more than 4300 pet moggies in South Australia.

Of note was data showing that 40 per cent of cats which were thought to be inside at night were actually “on the prowl”, according to research leader Dr Phillip Roetman.

Long life for milk project

By Luke Voogt Leopold woodworker Neil Galloway was “staggered” to learn that two rooms full of toys were not enough for Geelong’s disadvantaged children.

He and a friend made the discovery when they visited Bethany Community Support’s Christmas toy collection a few years ago.

“I thought they had done a great job, but they told us it wouldn’t even come close,” the 72-year-old said.

“There’s a hell of a lot of needy kids in Gee-

long. That was further motivation for us to try to do our best to help.”

He and about 40 of “Santa’s elves” at the Barwon Valley Woodwrights were busily producing quality wooden toys for Bethany this year.

One member, Dallas Polley, had produced 20 toys a year for at least the last decade, Neil said.

“We have a couple of members who are prolific makers of toys. They just do it year in and year out.”

The 27-year-old club’s eclectic collection of ex-builders, cabinet makers and hobbyists crafted about 60 toys for the appeal this year.

“The toys are just one element, but it’s an important one,” Neil said.

“I’ve only been in the club myself for nine or 10 years - and they were doing it before I came - so it’s definitely been going longer than that.”

A Geelong discovery that adds five weeks to the shelf-life of milk could “absolutely change” Australia’s dairy industry, according to the man behind the technology.

Sri Balaji Ponraj’s breakthrough treated milk with microscopic plasma bubbles rather than pasteurisation, he explained.

The plasma method was “less aggressive”, so the milk lasted longer without losing nutritional value, Dr Ponraj said.

“We use a needle to send tiny gas bubbles through the milk, which can then be converted into plasma that provides an environmentally friendly, non-thermal approach to decontamination,” he said.

“Using this method, the shelf life of milk can be pushed out to six weeks minimum, which could absolutely change the landscape of the bovine dairy industry.”

The method could also have implications for the supply of human breast milk in hospital wards and nurseries, Dr Ponraj said.

He pioneered the system with Dr Jane Dai at Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials, at Waurn Ponds.

Dr Ponraj was among 850 Deakin students who recently celebrated their graduation in three ceremonies at the university’s Waterfront campus.

Graduates such as Dr Ponraj would become “part of the valuable global network of Deakin alumni that links together people, information and ideas”, said vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander.

“The greatest innovations in history always come from people who are bold enough to explore new frontiers and think differently.

“I am confident that this group of graduands will pursue their passion and put their degrees to work to make a difference in the world.”

Data mining for top grad

By Luke Voogt Maths wunderkind Cameron Chandler has used his love of data to win the dux at Christian College Geelong with an ATAR of 99.3.

“I absolutely loved extracting meaning from numbers in the statistics coursework,” he said.

Cameron developed his passion for maths at the National Youth Science Forum, which he attended in January thanks to Geelong Rotary.

There the Belmont local discovered the different careers on offer in numbers.

“I love maths but I never knew it could be job,” he said.

The avid guitarist and former Australian representative in baseball plans to study data science at the University of Melbourne.

“The ability to use the insane quantity of data that is being collected these days for the betterment of healthcare, businesses and education is an amazing power.”

Jake Nankervis’s ATAR of 96.75 left his mother speechless - and his dad in disbelief.

“She nearly started crying she was so happy,” the former Grovedale College student told the Indy.

“I called my dad at the airport and he said ‘send a photo, I don’t believe you’. So I sent him one after he landed - I made him wait.”

Jake admitted his own surprise after scoring the highest ATAR out of Geelong’s public school students.

“I wasn’t expecting anything too great,” he said. “I didn’t think it was my result - it didn’t sink in until the next day.”

He outscored twin brother Brodie (89) following some friendly competition throughout the year.

“We do a couple of the same subjects so we wanted to best each other in those,” he said.

“We’d kind of bounce ideas of each other.”

Barwon Head’s Darbi Moody also took on some brotherly competition during his VCE quest.

He scored 97.5 to become dux of St Ignatius College - like his older brother Cooper before him 2014.

“At the end of the day I just wanted to get into my course,” he said.

A jetlagged Michael Bongiorno thought he was looking at “a joke” when he saw his ATAR of 99.55.

The former St Joseph’s student had just returned from an “immersion” trip in Uganda the night before, but couldn’t sleep until 4am due to nerves.

“I looked at the score and thought nah that’s not mine,” he said.

The Geelong West local was waiting nervously this week to see if he earned an interview with Monash University to study medicine.

Geelong College’s Tom Yang was one of 36 students in Victoria to achieve a perfect score of 99.95.

“It was unbelievable,” the Point Cook local said.

Tom studied a minimum two hours a night to record the highest score at a Geelong school and earn the Chancellor’s Scholarship at the University of Melbourne.

“It’s been a tough,” he said.

But Tom said he would have to wait until studying science at the university before deciding his future.

“I’m still not quite sure what I want to do.”

Rain change ‘kills mouse’ GENUINE: Leading Senior Constable Andy Brittain presents Doctor Rudi Gasser with an award for his work for a Kokoda youth program.

Doctor goes the extra mile Police have recognised Geelong doctor Rudi Gasser for five years of going “well beyond” the call of duty for a Kokoda youth program.

Leading Senior Constable Andy Brittain praised Dr Gasser for his active and genuine interest in at-risk youth preparing to take on the Kokoda Trail.

“On our very initial program, I remember Rudi ringing my mobile very early on a Saturday morning when we were transiting through Cairns Airport on the way to Papua New Guinea.

“He was doing a welfare check to make sure everyone was OK and that we had taken our malaria tablet ... prior to our departure from Geelong.”

Each year Geelong police select 14 at-risk youths from local schools to take part in the 10-month program, which involves trekking

the gruelling Kokoda Trail.

So far the 61 youths that had completed the program had either returned to school, gained employment or gone onto further education.

Dr Gasser has been involved with the program since it began in 2013, providing health checks to determine medical fitness to undertake the strenuous trek.

Leading Sen Const Brittain presented Dr Gasser with the Geelong Kokoda Youth Program’s Blue Ribbon Community Award earlier this month.

“His sincerity as a person is very humbling and very noteworthy to Barwon Health, who can trust that he is representing the organisation to the highest standard,” he said.

“He has taken a very active and genuine interest in the at-risk young people, even being able to recall their name when spoken about.”

Climate change has probably killed off an important native mouse in its Otways “home range”, according to a researcher.

The New Holland mouse was last recorded in the Otways and Anglesea Heath in 2003, but monitoring over the past four years failed to find any, said Deakin University Associate Professor Barbara Wilson.

“This leads us to believe that the New Holland mouse is most probably extinct from this habitat, something we did not expect to find,” the Deakin University ecologist said.

Reductions in rain from climate change were a “big threat” to the mouse, she believed.

“In the Otways, we had eight populations we studied. They were small and localised, but some were high density populations, especially after high rainfall.

“Unfortunately, when rainfall declined, the species declined.”

“Potential threats” to the species included land clearing, “inappropriate” fire controls, introduced predators and human impacts such as horse-riding and off-leash dogs),” Assoc Prof Wilson said.

She called for a range of actions to restore the mouse to the Otways, with other New Holland populations still surviving at Wilson’s Promontory, Dutson Downs and Providence Ponds.

“It’s now likely that the only way we will see a return of this species to the Otways is through a reintroduction program, but that must be supported by habitat protection, predator control and appropriate fire management if it is going to be effective,” Assoc Prof Wilson said.

DISAPPEARED: The native New Holland mouse.

She considered protection of the mouse critical, with the species having “historical and environmental significance“.

“Of Australia’s 49 conilurine rodent species - the group to which the New Holland mouse belongs - eight are extinct and 35 are in decline.

“Unfortunately, there’s not much monitoring of this kind of species, the money and public concern mostly flows to the bigger iconic mammals like koalas and numbats.

“A lot of the public don’t know we have native rodents, so we want to open up people’s minds to the small but significant species we have.

“There needs to be more resources put into regular monitoring of any wildlife listed as threatened.”

Assoc Prof Wilson said the New Holland variety looked “very similar” but was unrelated to the common house mouse”, which European settlers introduced to Australia.

The native species had slightly larger ears and eyes while lacking a distinctive “mousey” odour, she said.

300 in $15m office Work is underway on a $15 million Belmont building to house 300 staff following the merger of two of Geelong’s biggest welfare agencies.

The Reynolds Road headquarters of genU Karingal St Laurence should be finished in 12 months, chief executive officer Mike McKinstry has announced.

The office for the staff of the formerly independent Karingal and St Laurence agencies would “further establish the city’s reputation as a centre of excellence for personal injury and disability”, genU said.

The “state-of-the-art building” would accommodate the agency’s disability, aged care and employment services divisions.

Builder 4Square Constructions would source 70 per cent of building materials from local suppliers, “further driving investment into the local economy”, genU said.

NOW Architecture designed the threestorey, 3100sqm building as environmentally friendly with have “minimal impact on the surrounding residential context and scale”.

The project showed genU’s commitment to investing in the Geelong region, Mr McKinstry said.

“While we have recently rebranded to genU and now operate in every state except Tasmania and the Northern Territory, the Barwon region will always be our home and we feel our new head office reflects that,” he said.

“We’re committed to helping build a stronger Geelong, alongside other organisations like WorkCover, TAC and VicRoads, and we’re now one of the top five providers of disability and lifestyle services in Australia.

“This building will also provide cost savings across our business as we vacate a number of leases and move our staff into our new home.”

“You’d hope there would be a process in place that would check that vendors were doing the right thing.”

Festival management denied with-holding any tickets, said promoter Stacey Piggott .

“We changed over our ticketing company this year so the process timeline is slightly longer than last year, which is why there’s been a delay in tickets getting to the vollies.”

Some festival vendors also offered volunteers tickets for work, Ms Piggott said.

“We strongly encourage anyone having issues with tickets being withheld for any reason to contact us at info@fallsfestival.com and we will sort it out.”

The Falls Festival program offers each volunteer a three-day ticket worth $299 for 14 hours’ work, plus free parking, basic meals and camping.

The lowest-paid trainee on a casual rate would receive $319 under the Live Performance Award for working the same hours.

The lowest-paid non-trainee would earn $347.90 at a casual rate.

The award stipulates double time for Sundays and public holidays, which includes the last day of the festival, on 31 December, and during clean-up on New Year’s Day.

Geelong Art Gallery director Jason Smith and predecessor Geoffrey Edwards are to be congratulated for their touring Archibald Prize acquisition rights and presentation.

While the continued reduction in the number of touring works has been disappointing, apart from enhancing the local arts scene, the Archibald was good trickle-down CBD business.

Interestingly, and without any cajoling, a theatre employee and a recent China-travelling co-participant both said the same thing about Geelong virtually word for word.

Together with some girlfriends they travelled from Southern Cross Station, took in the Archibald, lunched on the waterfront and found it all too easy and loved the day.

Of course there would be box-office flops and it’s easier said than done but, given autonomy, sufficient funding and an entrepreneurial spirit, one-off music and arts events at Geelong Gallery, Costa Hall, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, the National Wool Museum and the Eastern Beach amphitheatre would have potential to attract well-heeled, greyingbrigade assiduous punters from Melbourne by rail.

With the north-facing foreshore providing another magnet, walking-distance hospitality outlets would also be capable of making money from the train day-trippers.

And what’s wrong with all of that?

There is always a need for volunteers in society.

I agree that it is a productive and socially responsible use of one’s time to be a volunteer for a charity or worthy community organisation which is why I happily gave a number of years of my busy life to Barwon Health as a volunteer in various capacities.

It was a most enjoyable period in my nowlong life.

And I still have plenty of time left over to pen a letter or two to the print media.

The conceit of false prophets I thank Jukka Tuisku (Letters, 15 December) for his conspiracy theory about climate “deniers” and for tipping me off that we’re paid by the Koch brothers.

I must ask them where my cheque is.

The global-warming big money is funded by taxpayers as governments spend billions promoting the theory and subsidising green energy at the expense of the cheap electricity we used to have.

Mr Tuisku said deniers “can’t just be sceptical about anthropogenic global warming, they have to deny any truth to it at all”. Therefore, I’m not a “denier”.

Earth has warmed .8C since the Little Ice Age; a modest effect of coming out of the cold.

Is the warming anthropogenic? Not all of it, since it began before humans could be blamed.

How much, if any, is human-caused is the subject of research.

So I deny nothing. I’ll wait for the experts.

Then there’s climate change. Well, the climate has been changing for 4.5 billion years, which I’m not denying.

Is it changing now? The weather is always changing but climate is weather at a distance, so perhaps we can’t tell yet.

If it is changing are humans the cause? They haven’t been for 4.5 billion years.

Many of those “denier websites”, self-funded by independent researchers, are devoted to finding answers to questions.

And then there’s our climate expert, let him be nameless, who once told us the dams would never fill again - just before Brisbane drowned.

That’s where science-is-settled conceit takes you.

Statements such as “we are in a war for the very existence of life on our planet as we know it” needs to be called out.

The usual suspects all got a mention; California’s fires, changing polar bear habits and record ice loss were all due to climate change.

But these claims are simply not supported by latest data.

Nobody holds the UN to account. It can make all sorts of exaggerated claims and the fawning media reports every word without question.

If anyone else made a false statement about someone or made a faulty product they would be held to account. Yet year after year dubious claims are left unchallenged at UN climate conferences.

The conferences make decisions that slow the advancement of mankind. They seriously undermine the living standards and impoverish the lives of millions of people around the globe by making energy more expensive and less reliable while exporting jobs to jurisdictions that don’t take a zealot-like approach to divesting themselves of fossil fuels.

Australia should follow the lead of US President Donald Trump and withdraw from the Paris Accord.

It is apparent that, while Islam with its highly disputable doctrines, is rarely examined or criticised, Christianity has been relentlessly challenged, often ignoring the benefits of its indisputable effect as the bedrock of Western democracy.

In this attack the failings of the professing churches have been legitimately targeted.

The soft underbelly has been exposed and is seen to be in the many man-made additions to the teachings of Jesus and the doctrines outlined in the Bible.

The man-made rules fail to meet God’s requirements or society’s demand for true justice.

In its time of trial, the church must reform again.

It has been said a nation is formed by what it is prepared to give up and what it fights to keep.

Five-hundred years ago Martin Luther’s reformation cried for a faith directed by faith alone, scripture alone, grace alone. This again is the need of the present hour.

Regrettably, the trend in the modern church is the opposite. We now see that an emphasis on ‘good works’, ‘modern psychology’ and ‘personal righteousness’ is the common message proclaimed.

Society can be enlightened again but only if the church regains its light and Jesus be seen as the light of the world.

Labor on drugs Victoria’s drugs crisis is ruining lives.

New figures show that more Victorians are falling victim to the drugs scourge, with Victoria recording the highest rate of heroin use in Australia.

The Andrews Labor Government thinks a drug-injecting room in Richmond will fix Victoria’s drugs crisis but it does nothing to address problems with drug crime and access to rehabilitation. A drug-injecting room will not stop the flood of heroin coming into Victoria and will not help the many Victorians desperate get off the drug but having to wait up to a year for a rehab bed.

Because of Labor’s lack of action we are now in the grips of a drugs crisis that is ruining lives and families.

Victorians have a choice at the next election: more of the same Labor neglect or a Liberal-Nationals government focused on tackling the drug epidemic with targeted education, better access to drug treatment and bringing down the drug kingpins that prey on vulnerable people in our community.

Tranquil fair for Sinclair

By Justin Flynn Raised by Eagles is heading to Ocean Grove for the annual Tranquility Fair on Saturday 6 January, and band frontman Luke Sinclair has fond memories of the bustling coastal town.

“I look forward to coming to Ocean Grove even when it’s got nothing to do with music,” Sinclair says.

“Friends used to have a holiday house there, and we’d stay for a week or two. I have great memories of Ocean Grove. A bunch of us still go there to lay on the beach and surf.

“Those gigs where there’s families, kids and dogs running around - they’re great.”

Raised by Eagles has formed a reputation as one of Melbourne’s most sought-after independent bands.

The quartet’s 2015 album Diamonds in the Bloodstream won Best Country Album and Best Emerging Artist at The Age Music Victoria Awards.

But ask Sinclair about what made the band delve into country music and he pauses.

“They’re still calling us country for some reason,” he says.

“I really struggle with that question. I like to call it country rock ‘n roll. I can’t articulate the type of music we play because it involves so many influences from all of us. There are connotations attached to labels.

“If you get labelled as country, people who don’t like country have already decided they don’t like it and pass it by just because of the label attached to it.”

The band’s journey took them to Nashville for the prestigious Americana Music Festival and when prompted to recall the experience, Sinclair’s reaction is immediate.

Raised by Eagles will be performing at Ocean Grove's Tranquility Fair on 6 January.

“It was just an amazing place to be in,” he says.

“It was always a place that was almost mythical growing up. We were wide eyed and astounded at the level of musicianship. That will stay with me forever.”

Raised by Eagles was an interesting choice for a band name, and Sinclair recalls the day it all started.

“I wish it was a more interesting story,” he says.

“It was a nickname given to me by an eccentric buddy. He reckons I walk around with a furrowed brow like an eagle, like I’d been raised by eagles.”

After the Tranquility Fair, Sinclair plans to get back into songwriting, but says he needs “silence and an empty” to do it properly.

The band is still going strong since forming in 2013, and the members are all good mates.

“We all have issues like brothers and families do, but at the end of the day we are a very tight unit that relies on all four of us for the band to be what it is,” Sinclair says.

“When we get into a room and start playing, it all comes together.”

Cats in box seat LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club is well placed to go into the Christmas break with a win under their belt, after knocking up an impressive 312 last Saturday against Monash Tigers.

After winning the toss and batting, Mitch Reid (67) and Tom Treble (46) put on an even 100 for the first wicket before Treble was unfortunately run out just short of a well-deserved half century.

Eamonn Vines (67) and Dom McGlinchey (44) ensured that the middle order capitalised on the good start, although the last four wickets falling for just eight runs wasn’t ideal.

With four overs left remaining to finish day one, the side had the opportunity to snare a couple of late wickets, but weren’t able to and conceded 22 runs.

A disciplined bowling performance tomorrow should be enough to see the side go into Christmas on a positive note, but a lot of hard work will be needed first.

In the Geelong Cricket Association, East Belmont appears to be slightly in front in their game against top-placed North Geelong, although the Magpies scrapped hard to ensure a competitive total of 205 was posted.

David Lineen (3/36) returned to his best form early, crashing through the top order, before Chris Williams (6/58) went to work on the middle and lower orders. The star leg spinner is putting together an impressive season so far, with 21 wickets already.

For North Geelong, Braden Szponar (53) showed some fight, while coach Nathan Fitzgerald (35) helped nurse the tail enders to ensure a decent score at stumps.

The Lions top order will be the key tomorrow, if their openers Sean O’Neill and Andrew Baars can continue their good form, then a win should be on the cards, but North Geelong are too strong and proud to just roll over, and will fight all day in what should be a close game.

In division two, St Peters won an absolute thriller against a gallant Newcomb and District last week.

The Saints batted first and, while they didn’t have it all their own way, were able to post a healthy 198 after their 50 overs, with Mitchell Jepson (48) top scoring and Shane Fowles (41) doing his bit.

The Dinos looked good in their run chase, with Blake Ritchie (46) attacking the target with a positive vibe, but in the end it came down to the final over, and with three balls remaining and three runs needed, Pranav Barot

(28) was cruelly run out to see St Peters win by the barest of margins and keep their premiership hopes well and truly alive.

Tomorrow sees a round of one-day games in this division before the Christmas break.

Open invite as Bombers train for glory

By Mark Heenan Essendon Football Club will hold a four-day training camp in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in February.

The Bombers will arrive on 6 February to focus on pre-season training and team bonding.

Around 70 staff including the entire Essendon playing list, coaching staff, sports science personnel and members of the football department will spend up to four days on the Bellarine.

Essendon game performance coach Mark Neeld, who coached Ocean Grove to senior flags in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, said it would be a huge boost for the local area.

“We have had some positive feedback from the council, and we’ve been overwhelmed with the welcome from the Ocean Grove Cricket Club and the local community,” Neeld told the Voice.

In recent weeks, a few Essendon staff including Neeld, who grew up in Ocean Grove, inspected the modern Shell Road sports pavilion facility and its playing surface.

“The Ocean Grove Cricket Club could not have been more welcoming – they have been absolutely fantastic,” Neeld said.

Ocean Grove Cricket Club president Peter Hart said it was a terrific boost for the sportsfocused region.

“It is not about cricket as such versus footy, it is just about the community,” Hart said.

Neeld, a former Melbourne AFL coach who played 74 AFL games with Geelong and Richmond, said players were spoiled for choice to take part in outdoor activities which showcased the Bellarine.

He said there were numerous surfing and golf enthusiasts within the Bombers’ playing group.

“The camp itself has been designed to offer choice for the boys which effectively means there is going to be a large block of free time – there are some keen surfers in the group and there are also some very keen golfers in the group,” he said.

Options are plentiful ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Corio Bay proved worthwhile fishing for soft-plastic anglers over the past week with mixed bags on offer.

Fishing from Limburner’s Point gave anglers access to numerous garfish, which had a liking for small amounts of silverfish baited under a float.

The spoil grounds just out from the point held pinkie snapper, pike and flathead, with three or four-inch Gulp minnows working well.

Of note, anglers even managed a few King George whiting on plastics over the past few weeks, especially on worm styles.

Nathan Wright cast plastics from his kayak around the boats moored on the grammar school lagoon. He landed a number of nice-sized black bream along with something more solid that ended up being a large estuary perch, a rare catch for Corio Bay. St Leonards’ whiting captures only increased, with the Bourke Street area a safe bet on the run-in tide. Anyone wanting to beat the Christmas break crowds on the whiting should fish any area in around 4m to 6m with sand and weed patches, moving only 50m or so until finding the fish.

Squid were taken over the weed beds between St Leonards Yacht Club and the mouth of Swan Bay. Size three jigs in white colours or a King George whiting pattern did the trick.

Fishing the deeper water out from St Leonard’s resulted in gummy sharks around 6kg.

Queenscliff held larger whiting on the grass beds, but they were more temperamental.

Queenscliff Harbour was productive for silver trevally and squid around a slack tide. Soft plastics worked well on the trevally.

The Rip hosted Australian salmon, which at times erupted on the surface in feeding frenzies.

Offshore reports began to mention kingfish, with some respectable fish to 8kg taken on knife jigs or well-presented squid baits.

Trelly’s Geelong Kevin Hunter took a run off shore last week and boated a healthy bag of tiger flathead. Plenty of snapper and gummy shark have also been taken at the 30m mark.

Down west, the western estuaries fished well for bream, perch and even mulloway, while Portland had a few kingfish on the go.

Lake Purrumbete continued producing trophy brown trout. A variety of methods worked but trolling Tassie Devils at first light along the east bank was hard to beat.

Just up the road, Lake Toolirook still had rainbow trout snapping up trolled Tassie Devils as well.

The Barwon River around Queen’s Park saw redfin devouring small hardbody lures. Fishos wanting to try something different could use a Megabass Siglet, which is a surface lure that’s great for avoiding snags.

The Christmas break should present lots of options but boating a kingfish from the Rip or offshore from Barwon Heads could provide some seriously fast-paced action. Otherwise, whiting will bite all summer long off St Leornards and the Barwon River estuary will remain a great location to take kids fishing with pippies on a running sinker for a variety of species. geelongindy.com.au
